- 0:12How Life, friends it is shown here it is the 22nd of March and
- 0:17lo and behold, that is a Friday. That's right.
- 0:20If you hadn't realised it yet, Brent, congratulations.
- 0:24You have made it to the end of another week.
- 0:26Here we stand. Hi.
- 0:28Hope it's been a good week for you and maybe even a better
- 0:33weekend ahead. We have got a wedding in the
- 0:36family and that is very exciting for the extended Connery crew.
- 0:41How wonderful. But today is the day that we get
- 0:45to read Assam together. And today we read Assam.
- 0:49Well, it's one of those classic praying vengeance down upon your
- 0:54enemies kind of sounds. But the thing to note here is
- 0:57that this is the king, right? This is David riding this song.
- 1:02This song, yes. It is not a tirade of curses
- 1:06upon his enemies. This is a song that he sings to
- 1:09a sovereign God, asking God to bring justice, when every other
- 1:16king at that time would just have marched out to bring that
- 1:20justice himself. David praised that God, God the
- 1:24ultimate judge, be the one to bring justice and restoration.
- 1:29So what a fantastic model for us.
- 1:31And of course Jesus takes it further and says we should pray
- 1:34blessings on our enemies. But this is at the time an
- 1:39enormous step forward. So let's read it together, shall
- 1:43we? Let's read this sign, which is
- 1:45for the choir. Director Assam of David Psalm
- 1:49109 Oh God, whom I praise, don't
- 2:04stand silent and aloof while the wicked slander me and tell lies
- 2:09about me. They surround me with hateful
- 2:12words and fight against me for no reason.
- 2:16I love them, but they try to destroy me with accusations,
- 2:20even as I'm praying for them. They repay evil for good and
- 2:25hatred for my love. They say get an evil person to
- 2:29turn against him. Send an accuser to bring him to
- 2:33trial. When his case comes up for
- 2:35judgement, let him be pronounced guilty.
- 2:38Count his prayers as sins. Let his years be few.
- 2:43Let someone else take his position.
- 2:45May his children become fatherless and his wife a widow.
- 2:50May his children wander as beggars and be driven from their
- 2:53ruined homes. My creditors seize his entire
- 2:58estate, and strangers take all he has earned.
- 3:02Let no one be kind to him. Let no one pity his fatherless
- 3:07children. May all his offspring die.
- 3:11May his family name be blotted out in the next generation.
- 3:16May the Lord never forget the sins of his fathers.
- 3:21May his mother's sins never be erased from the record.
- 3:24May the Lord always remember these sins, and may his name
- 3:28disappear from human memory. For he refuses all kindness to
- 3:33others, He persecutes the poor and needy, and he hounded the
- 3:37broken hearted to death. He loved to curse others.
- 3:42Now you curse him. He never blessed others.
- 3:46Now don't you bless him? Cursing is as natural to him as
- 3:50his clothing, or the water he drinks, or the rich food he
- 3:54eats. Now may his curses return and
- 3:57cling to him like clothing. May they be tied around him like
- 4:01a belt. May those curses become the
- 4:06Lord's punishment for my accusers who speak evil of me,
- 4:12but deal well with me. Our sovereign Lord.
- 4:15For the sake of your own reputation, rescue me because
- 4:20you are so faithful and good. For I am poor and needy and my
- 4:25heart is full of pain. I'm fading like a shadow of a
- 4:30dusk. I am brushed off like a locust,
- 4:33My knees are weak from fasting, and I am skin and bones.
- 4:39I am a joke to people everywhere.
- 4:42When they see me, they shake their heads and scorn.
- 4:46Help me, oh Lord. My God, save me because of your
- 4:50unfailing love. Let them see that this is your
- 4:54doing, that you yourself have done it, Lord.
- 4:58Then let them curse me if they like.
- 5:01But you will bless me. When they attack me.
- 5:05They will be disgraced, but I, your servant, will go right on
- 5:11rejoicing. May my accusers be clothed in
- 5:15disgrace. May their humiliation cover them
- 5:18like a cloak, but I will give repeated thanks to the Lord
- 5:24praising Him to everyone, for he stands beside the needy, ready
- 5:30to save them from those who condemn them.
- 5:42Our Lord, that we would have the heart of the Psalmist.
- 5:47That when our enemies, when those who just want to do us
- 5:52harm are so vocal in their criticism of us.
- 5:57Ah, let us come to you and praise you and seek your
- 6:03judgement and just be content to rest in the protection of your
- 6:09grace. It's just so easy to want to
- 6:15take up our own arms against our oppressors.
- 6:19But here you show us a better way.
- 6:22Respond in faith. Faith in your goodness.
- 6:25To us, when you're justice in the world, Thank you for being a
- 6:31God who is bigger than any challenge we face and bigger
- 6:34than any bully we might encounter.
- 6:39And if we find that our hearts have been tempted to be the ones
- 6:44holding the power over others, Lord, convict us so that we can
- 6:49place down that power and instead take up your humility
- 6:54and love. You are a good God and we love
- 7:00you and we want to be more like you, so we pray all these things
- 7:06in the transforming name of Jesus.
- 7:10Ah man.
