- 0:00Hello. I pet a baby cow this weekend. But stuff
- 0:05still happened. So what's up? Okay, state folk,
- 0:09which way are we going? Before I get to the general
- 0:11state side stuff, I want to talk about a poll
- 0:13that's currently circulating, showing that Republicans
- 0:15are souring on the direction of the country.
- 0:18APNORC had a poll, and that poll showed that
- 0:20Republican sentiment about if this country's
- 0:23going in the right direction dropped dramatically
- 0:26this month. Like from 70 % to like 49%, like
- 0:29a huge drop in sentiment. So what caused this?
- 0:32Are they turning on Trump? Probably not, but
- 0:34I want to talk about this for a little bit because
- 0:36it's interesting. There's fractures, but it's
- 0:39not an about face. It's fair to assume, since
- 0:41this drop happened pretty recently, that it was
- 0:43in part impacted by the Charlie Kirk assassination.
- 0:46There are a lot of people who are white conservatives
- 0:49that don't pay much attention to the news, who
- 0:51saw that the news is showing that someone who
- 0:53looks a lot like them just got shot in the neck.
- 0:55A person who looks a lot like them and says a
- 0:57lot of the things that they say... got shot in
- 0:59the neck. Now, a lot of people get shot in a
- 1:01lot of places all the time in this country, but
- 1:03rarely is it a white conservative talking head
- 1:05getting shot on video in HD. So there's that
- 1:08aspect of it, but there's also the massive crackdown
- 1:11on free speech that's been coming from the White
- 1:12House ever since the assassination. An obvious
- 1:15example of this is the Jimmy Kimmel situation
- 1:17where he got pulled off air for a very tepid
- 1:19statement. I want to be clear that I don't care
- 1:21about Jimmy Kimmel. I don't at all. But his statement
- 1:25was that the MAGA world is working overtime to
- 1:28paint the shooter of Charlie Kirk as some leftist
- 1:31extremist. That was the statement. That was the
- 1:33thing that got him taken off air. They're claiming
- 1:35that that was like hate speech or something.
- 1:37It is now that I will point out that a recent
- 1:39report came out showing that the Fed has made
- 1:41no link between the shooter and any leftist group
- 1:45whatsoever. So he, that was just the truth. But
- 1:48it doesn't matter. He got pulled anyway. And
- 1:50of course, immediately Democrats were like, ah,
- 1:53Makimel. But Republicans were not uniform in
- 1:56their response. There was plenty that are cheering
- 1:58on the move and like, yeah, that the White House
- 2:00should absolutely go after people that I don't
- 2:02like personally. But others actually seem to
- 2:05remember that Free speech and not having a government
- 2:09chilling speech is actually part of their platform.
- 2:11And they were like, I don't know how to handle
- 2:14this one. The White House is now trying to crack
- 2:16down on the left talking about rooting out left
- 2:19wing terrorism, which isn't a thing in this country.
- 2:22So now this is just my opinion. But with everything
- 2:24that's going on with the vitriol, with the response
- 2:26from the White House, with the assassination,
- 2:28with the heightened tensions, I think even Republicans
- 2:31are like, what the fuck is happening here? In
- 2:34interviews with Republican voters about this
- 2:35subject matter, they talked about a variety of
- 2:37things, mostly stuff like the economy, and how
- 2:40they can't get a job. Or how they feel like there's
- 2:41a lot of violent rhetoric going on, and just
- 2:44anger, and we're at each other's throats. Which
- 2:46is... I mean... The president's fault, to a degree?
- 2:51Like, obviously it's not just him, but the guy
- 2:54spends every single day railing against people
- 2:56while fucking up the economy. I think they're,
- 2:59um... I think they're a little annoyed by that.
- 3:01So yeah, we've got like an administration that's
- 3:02trying to crack down on free speech that's using
- 3:04the death of some dude as a reason to go after
- 3:08people. The economy is bad, the job market is
- 3:10bad, public health is bad, public mental health
- 3:12is inaccessible. Birth rates are low, public
- 3:15safety is low, crime is on the rise. There's
- 3:17only so long that culture war quote -unquote
- 3:19victories can keep people satisfied. Those don't
- 3:22feed the hungry. The Trump administration has
- 3:25already shown that they're willing to fire officials
- 3:26who put out a report that makes the government
- 3:28look kind of bad. And now they're getting rid
- 3:30of the annual report on hunger, citing that it's
- 3:33too overly politicized. This report being a key
- 3:36way that we can analyze what hunger and poverty
- 3:39looks like in the country. But we're just gonna
- 3:41get rid of it. Legislating against trans people
- 3:43doesn't give health care to your elderly parents
- 3:46when they need it. Funding ICE more than most
- 3:48militaries doesn't make it so that corporations
- 3:50pay reasonable salaries. And multiple crypto
- 3:53schemes from the literal President of the United
- 3:55States of America doesn't ease housing market
- 3:58problems. At the end of the day, I want to remind
- 4:00you of this. There's a lot of people out there
- 4:02that want the same thing as you do. They want
- 4:04safety, security, and a future. Unfortunately,
- 4:07a lot of people don't have the time or space
- 4:10or tools to learn how to effectively bring about
- 4:13that change. And so their dissatisfaction and
- 4:16lack of direction make them perfect prey for
- 4:18those who want to profit off of sewing division.
- 4:21There are absolutely bad actors out there, but
- 4:24those bad actors are dwarfed by people who just
- 4:26want to not be hungry tomorrow. And unfortunately,
- 4:29when people want to not be hungry tomorrow, they're
- 4:30willing to believe a lot of things that make
- 4:33them feel like they might not be hungry tomorrow.
- 4:35And so it's everyone's job to help make sure
- 4:37that we all know how we actually get fed. Which
- 4:40is to say eat the rich. Moving on. Stateside.
- 4:44Still. The TikTok sale is happening. Kind of.
- 4:47But it's not. But it's not a sale, but it is
- 4:49a sale. And it's... Not gonna do anything. A
- 4:52deal has reportedly been met about the acquisition
- 4:54of TikTok by U .S. agencies because national
- 4:58security, apparently. Oracle, Silver Lake, and
- 5:00A16Z, which are three giant tech investment firms,
- 5:04are going to have an 80 % stake in the U .S.
- 5:06operations of TikTok. Oracle is gonna be controlling
- 5:08user data, and they're gonna lease... The algorithm
- 5:12from China? Whatever the fuck that means? It
- 5:14was apparently the algorithm, that was the problem.
- 5:16You know, China was able to influence our national
- 5:18discussion or whatever, it's like a national
- 5:20security thing, and that is still just gonna
- 5:22come from China? I guess? We really don't have
- 5:25a lot of information, so we don't actually know,
- 5:27but that's what the current reporting says. But
- 5:28it does look like a new US -specific app will
- 5:31roll out, and people on TikTok will need to move
- 5:33over to that if you're in the US. I don't have
- 5:37high hopes for this. Oracle is owned by Larry
- 5:39Ellison, and Larry Ellison is a massive Trump
- 5:42supporter and one of the richest people on the
- 5:44planet. He's basically Elon Musk, but you haven't
- 5:46seen him as much. Now, notably, this guy's son
- 5:49is now the CEO of CBS and Paramount. That makes
- 5:53the Ellison family, which is one of the richest
- 5:55families in the world, also one of the most influential
- 5:59families in media. They're working to put Barry
- 6:01Weiss, who is a massive quote -unquote anti -woke
- 6:05conservative journalist, as the editor -in -chief
- 6:07of CBS News. Now's a great time to subscribe
- 6:10to my newsletter if you don't do that already.
- 6:12We're waiting for the details, we don't exactly
- 6:13know how this is gonna work, but as a reminder,
- 6:16don't ever put all of your eggs in one corporate
- 6:19basket when it comes to media. This is why I
- 6:21am everywhere. This is why I have so many profiles,
- 6:25including places that I personally self -host,
- 6:28to have no worries about losing everything if
- 6:31a company goes shitty. So diversify. Thumbs up.
- 6:36Let's talk about Mississippi, where two different
- 6:38men were found hanging from two different trees
- 6:40on the same day, hours apart from each other.
- 6:43Mississippi has a long and very unfortunate history
- 6:45of lynchings. Even in modern day, there have
- 6:47been at least eight of them since 2000. And that's
- 6:50a severe undercount. But recently, two different
- 6:53men were found hanging from trees, both in Mississippi,
- 6:56within like three hours of each other. The first
- 6:58was Trey Reed, a black 21 -year -old student
- 7:01of Delta State University who was found hanging
- 7:03from a tree. Initial reports were that he had
- 7:06broken limbs in addition to being found dead
- 7:08on the tree. Those reports were proven untrue.
- 7:11He did not actually have broken limbs. At least
- 7:13that's the data that we have now. But that doesn't
- 7:15change the fact that virtually immediately authorities
- 7:18said No foul play. This was a suicide. Before
- 7:21we knew anything else, they were already saying
- 7:23they didn't suspect foul play, which is what
- 7:26they do every time this happens. A few hours
- 7:28later, Corey Zoukades was found hanging from
- 7:30a tree. He was a white homeless man who we don't
- 7:33really know much more about. That investigation
- 7:35is also still ongoing. In Reed's case, the coroner
- 7:38has already declared it a suicide, but the family
- 7:40is rejecting that. A foundation by former NFL
- 7:43player Colin Kaepernick is going to be paying
- 7:45for a private secondary autopsy on read. This
- 7:48is obviously horrible. Like, we don't know what
- 7:50happened. We're not going to get good info. There's
- 7:52not an interest in getting that good info. But
- 7:55it's very difficult to ignore that, right when
- 7:57we have this escalated sense of political violence,
- 8:01two people are found hanging from trees, one
- 8:03black and one homeless, two groups that are often
- 8:06targeted by conservatives. Quite literally, a
- 8:09conservative commentator on Fox News suggested
- 8:12that we should involuntarily euthanize homeless
- 8:15people. He still has a job, by the way. Last
- 8:17thing for stateside, let's talk about them H1B
- 8:19visas. H1B visas are used by companies to bring
- 8:22in foreign talent to fill in positions that otherwise
- 8:25are difficult to staff. Or at least, that's what
- 8:28they're supposed to be. In reality, H -1B visas
- 8:31are used a lot by the tech industry to hire on
- 8:34foreign workers to pay them significantly less
- 8:37than they would have to pay an American worker.
- 8:38They might just be paying them the lowest possible
- 8:41legal wage they can do to still use the visa,
- 8:43or they hire them at a position that's way lower
- 8:45than they're actually qualified for. They also
- 8:48then have an employee who's essentially beholden
- 8:50to them. They own that visa, and if the employee
- 8:53fucks around, they could just cancel the visa.
- 8:55So giant corporations love it, and especially
- 8:57big tech companies. They will get thousands and
- 9:00thousands of these per year. So what happened?
- 9:03Because it is still whack. Pretty much out of
- 9:05nowhere, Trump signed a proclamation that adds
- 9:07a $100 ,000 fee to H -1B visa applications. There
- 9:12was already a fee, but it was essentially trivial.
- 9:14Now, it's a hundred grand! When this came out,
- 9:17there was not a lot of information. People were
- 9:18poring over it, and immigration lawyers were
- 9:20like, I don't know what to make of this, but
- 9:21it sure seems like people need to be on U .S.
- 9:24soil by midnight tonight or face a hundred thousand
- 9:27dollar reentry fee. Now, since then, the White
- 9:30House has clarified that that's not the case.
- 9:32These are only for net new visa applications.
- 9:35But that seems like the kind of thing that you
- 9:37should include in the original statement. know
- 9:39like maybe maybe work through stuff just a little
- 9:43bit longer and like think about it 70 % of H1B
- 9:47visas are awarded to Indian nationals and India
- 9:50has made a statement basically saying like this
- 9:53sucks India's higher education system focuses
- 9:55a lot on international job placement so this
- 9:58is like a primary pipeline for that And while
- 10:00I also believe that H1B visas should be significantly
- 10:04overhauled, slapping a hundred thousand dollar
- 10:06price tag on them doesn't do a whole lot, especially
- 10:09when we don't really have a mechanism to even
- 10:11collect that money. And also, also, it seems
- 10:14like they put in a stipulation where they can
- 10:16just waive the fee if they feel like it, because
- 10:18of course they did. But ultimately, I don't think
- 10:21this is going to bring jobs back. Like, they're
- 10:24just going to offshore the jobs. H1B visas are
- 10:27offshoring with less steps. Without that, they're
- 10:31just gonna offshore. It won't be until companies
- 10:33face actual penalties for pulling bullshit and
- 10:36screwing over American workers that they're gonna
- 10:38do something. But we'll never actually do that
- 10:40because any time we pass legislation that's gonna
- 10:43actually hold companies accountable, everyone's
- 10:46like, oh, but they're gonna move now. If we pass
- 10:48legislation, the companies who treat us like
- 10:51shit will leave. Darn. Oh no. Elsewhere. Let's
- 10:57talk about a treaty of the seas. 60 different
- 11:00countries have signed on to a historic Treaty
- 11:02of the Seas, potentially saving them from catastrophic
- 11:05damage. Essentially, it's a treaty that says
- 11:07there's a bunch of international water that we
- 11:09really should protect if we want to keep having
- 11:11a planet in the future, so let's protect that.
- 11:14The treaty establishes zones that need to be
- 11:16protected from things like underwater mining
- 11:18and fishing and so on and so forth, and it's
- 11:20the first of its kind. A healthy ocean is really
- 11:23important for not destroying the planet from
- 11:25climate change, like the ocean sucks up a lot
- 11:27of CO2. and also produces a lot of oxygen, and
- 11:30is important. And while this is not some sort
- 11:33of, like, binding, massive piece of legislation
- 11:35that's gonna really do a whole lot, it's at least
- 11:38a step in the right direction. It's gonna be
- 11:39on individual countries to actually enforce it
- 11:42and police the areas and such, but maybe they
- 11:45will? I can be optimistic. Notably, a few key
- 11:48players haven't fully agreed to it yet, the US,
- 11:51China, Russia, and Japan being those key holdouts.
- 11:54The US and China have, like, Sort of signed on
- 11:57Russia and Japan have kind of like looked at
- 12:00it, but hey save the plankton What's next oh
- 12:07dear Bridget McCrone the first lady of France
- 12:09and wife of Emmanuel McCrone. This is weird.
- 12:13She's gonna Submit scientific evidence to a court
- 12:16of law to prove that she's a woman This is where
- 12:19we are. Because apparently these are the only
- 12:21people that drive the news now. Candice Owens,
- 12:24a right -wing podcaster from the US, has been
- 12:26staunchly asserting that Bridget McCrone was
- 12:29born a male. This has been a thing the right's
- 12:31been doing a lot of just like taking pictures
- 12:33of women and being like, they're trans. Because
- 12:37reasons. I genuinely don't know like why they
- 12:41do this. I can't think of a worse use of anyone's
- 12:44time. But where we are now is that the wife of
- 12:46a foreign national leader is going to submit
- 12:49evidence to a court of law to prove that she's
- 12:52a woman because of a podcaster, and because of
- 12:56transphobia, and because why is this happening?
- 12:59Anyway, fun fact, I was born a man. Sue me for
- 13:02something. Let's talk about urine and China.
- 13:04Two drunk teenagers from China decided to pee
- 13:07in some hot pot. Big ol' trough of broth. Urine.
- 13:12Anyway, they also recorded it and posted it on
- 13:14the internet. Which brings me great joy. It makes
- 13:16me so happy to know that teenagers do dumb bullshit
- 13:20regardless of country of origin. So they got
- 13:22caught and it kind of sucks for everyone involved.
- 13:26The restaurant in Shanghai where they peed in
- 13:28the hot pot had to make good by basically everyone
- 13:31who ate there for like a week. They gave them
- 13:33all refunds and paid out extra for like Damages
- 13:37they had to replace all their stuff and now they
- 13:40have a shitty reputation for being the piss pot
- 13:42place Now the teens were charged but also their
- 13:44parents are being held liable for like failure
- 13:47to properly Guardian their children so that means
- 13:49the parents are gonna be held liable for the
- 13:51for the hot pot piss as well Anyway, silly teenagers.
- 13:54Don't be in hot pot. That's fucking Gross. Anyway,
- 13:58other note on China, as much as teenagers peeing
- 14:00in a hot pot is a pretty big fucking deal, it's
- 14:03also worth noting that China is eclipsing the
- 14:06rest of the world with their green energy rollout.
- 14:08In one fiscal quarter, China added more renewable
- 14:12energy than the entire energy grid of Turkey.
- 14:15That's a lot of capacity. Meanwhile, in places
- 14:18like the US, we are cutting back on wind energy
- 14:22because Our leader doesn't like how windmills
- 14:25look, even though they're not even windmills.
- 14:27So anyway, maybe we should all just be pissing
- 14:30in the hot pot. Let's pop over to Israel, where
- 14:33Netanyahu is being a little too defensive. So
- 14:36I talked earlier about Charlie Kirk getting popped,
- 14:38and for whatever reason, Netanyahu has found
- 14:40it to be imperative that he makes it clear that
- 14:42Israel didn't do it. After the shooting, there
- 14:44was conspiracy theories circulating about Israel
- 14:46having a role in the death of Charlie Kirk, and
- 14:49not litigating that here? But it was so rampant
- 14:53that Netanyahu has made statements about it.
- 14:56Multiple of them. Multiple times. This guy has
- 14:59said Israel had nothing to do with Charlie Kirk's
- 15:01death. And then he went as far as to say that
- 15:04this conspiracy theory is being funded by Qatar,
- 15:06the place that they just recently bombed, despite
- 15:08being a US ally. Critics have noted that Netanyahu
- 15:11was strangely loud about Charlie Kirk's death
- 15:14right when it happened. Like, before we had a
- 15:16lot of information, he was already posting about
- 15:18it. And then he goes on to be like, we didn't
- 15:20do it! But what's far more important than literally
- 15:23anything involving Charlie Kirk ever is that
- 15:25Israel recently killed 31 journalists in Yemen.
- 15:29On September 10th, they made multiple airstrikes
- 15:31against multiple newsrooms in Yemen, killing
- 15:3431 journalists who were working on finalizing
- 15:37that week's newspaper. This is the second deadliest
- 15:39attack on journalists ever recorded by the Center
- 15:41for Protecting Journalists, and it's completely
- 15:44unacceptable. Israel is going for records with
- 15:47regards to killing journalists at this point,
- 15:49and it's fucked up. But at least we know that
- 15:52they didn't kill Charlie Kirk, according to Netanyahu.
- 15:55Hey, do you like what I do? And do you also want
- 15:58to help me keep doing it? If yes, thank you.
- 16:02You can head to isupport .dev to find links to
- 16:04a whole bunch of different ways to support me.
- 16:05And as always, just sharing my content helps
- 16:08a ton. So thank you for being here. Thank you
- 16:10for sharing it. Let's move on. Technology! NVIDIA
- 16:14bought a bunch of Intel stock. Intel has not
- 16:16been doing particularly great financially recently,
- 16:18and recently the government invested about $10
- 16:20billion in purchasing Intel stock, and now Nvidia
- 16:23is buying about $5 billion of stock. In doing
- 16:26so, they're announcing a partnership where Nvidia
- 16:28and Intel will like cross create chips to cross
- 16:32integrate their technologies into both data centers
- 16:35and personal computers. What this really means
- 16:37is that it seems like the U .S. is trying to
- 16:38position itself to better hold their ground on
- 16:41the semiconductor market. China just recently
- 16:43banned the of AI chips from Nvidia. That's not
- 16:46necessarily a one -to -one reason why this is
- 16:48happening, but other countries are catching up,
- 16:51and we are falling behind. And it also doesn't
- 16:53really help that, like, we don't have a ton of
- 16:55manufacturing here, and a lot of our market value
- 16:58from a company like Nvidia comes from speculation
- 17:01that AI is gonna matter in the future. Which
- 17:04it probably will, but is it gonna matter this
- 17:06much? Like, these kinds of moves are being discussed
- 17:09as national security. The continued success of
- 17:13Nvidia and Intel are a matter of national security,
- 17:16which seems like a bad place to be colors. I
- 17:22see them. Most of them. You know Jackson Pollock,
- 17:24the guy who does like the paint splatter paints?
- 17:26You know, the guy that makes the art that has
- 17:28everyone give the most tepid take ever of modern
- 17:32art isn't really art. That guy. So he has a really
- 17:35famous painting in the MoMA that they wanted
- 17:37to figure out. what he used as a pigment for
- 17:40a specific blue in the painting. Jackson Pollock
- 17:43did a lot of his work by just flicking paint
- 17:45at the canvas, and so a lot of the colors on
- 17:48his works are just single pigments. Knowing what
- 17:51pigments, like what specific pigments were used
- 17:53to create what colors, helps with things like,
- 17:55one, just art history, but two, preventing counterfeits.
- 17:59Historians thought for a while this was manganese
- 18:01blue that he used, and they were right, that
- 18:04is what it is, but how they figured that out
- 18:06is rad. They took a sample from the painting,
- 18:09again, like lots of globs, so they took like
- 18:10a tiny little little scraping of the blue and
- 18:13they put it under a microscope, or they put it
- 18:16under a science object. They hit it with a bunch
- 18:18of lasers and then measured the vibrations in
- 18:20the molecules to create a unique signature for
- 18:23the pigment. They could then go and test that
- 18:25signature against other pigments and Wouldn't
- 18:28you know it? They were right. It was, it was
- 18:30that blue. Fun fact, it's the same blue pigment
- 18:32that was used in pool floors. So if you were
- 18:35a person in the US between like the 70s and 90s,
- 18:38the concrete in a public pool, that blue, it's
- 18:42that same pigment in that neat gaming. One of
- 18:44my favorite series is Horizon. Zero intellectual
- 18:48property. Chinese tech juggernaut Tencent is
- 18:50producing a game called Light of Motoram. Mo
- 18:55-Mo -Materam. Motoram. I'm not looking it up.
- 18:57I don't care. In the promotional materials, it
- 18:59appears to be a game where you play as a sort
- 19:01of tribal hunter in a world inhabited by robot
- 19:04animals, and you play as a character who's like
- 19:07a redhead with a bow. This is completely different
- 19:09from the Horizon series, where you're a tribal
- 19:12hunter in a world filled with mechanical animals,
- 19:15and you're a redhead with a bow. So Sony, who
- 19:17makes the Horizon franchise, is pretty upset,
- 19:20especially because the marketing materials look
- 19:22identical, but Tencent has responded by saying
- 19:24no. They're trying to get a copyright on something
- 19:28that's far too specific. A world in which people
- 19:32are tribal hunters using bows to hunt down specifically
- 19:35mechanical animals that looks very specifically
- 19:37this one way. Now I will say the two do look
- 19:39very very similar, but digging in a bit it does
- 19:43seem like Tencent's game is pretty different
- 19:46from the Horizon series. Visually, looks very,
- 19:48very similar, and the promotional art looks incredibly
- 19:51similar, but keep in mind that stuff like this
- 19:53can be done on purpose to create these kinds
- 19:56of situations to get attention. Lightning Round.
- 19:59After a decade -long search, researchers found
- 20:02a 140 -year -old ship that was lost to a storm
- 20:04in Lake Michigan. And another boat, which might
- 20:07be found in 140 years, was sunk by orcas. A man
- 20:10died while riding a roller coaster at Universal
- 20:12Epic Universe. That's really sad. I also did
- 20:15not know that Universal Epic Universe was...
- 20:18a park? That name is very bad. A man in the UK
- 20:21who was using Snapchat to prey on more than 40
- 20:24children has been caught and jailed. A judge
- 20:26dismissed the terrorism charges against the alleged
- 20:29shooter of the United Healthcare CEO Luigi Mangione.
- 20:32Those were the big, big charges that we kind
- 20:35of knew when they were originally levied against
- 20:37him that that was not going to work. Like, that
- 20:40was the state way overreaching. And finally for
- 20:44today, California has made it illegal for law
- 20:46enforcement officers to wear masks while performing
- 20:49their duties in a direct blow against the Department
- 20:52of Homeland Security and ICE. These federal agents
- 20:55have been wearing masks while going around detaining
- 20:58people, which isn't good at all. Hopefully more
- 21:01states follow through with this and hopefully
- 21:03actually enforce it. Thank you so much for listening
- 21:05to today's episode of Stuff Keeps Happening.
- 21:07Head to skh .news for sources, bonus content,
