- 0:09Speaker 1: We are live at the American Century Championship, right off
- 0:12Speaker 1: the driving range, the great Joe Thaisman and still the
- 0:14Speaker 1: most handsome man here. I don't know how many years
- 0:16Speaker 1: have you been here, You're still the most handsome thirty
- 0:18Speaker 1: six thirty six years.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Came here when I was ten. It's unbelievable. By the way,
- 0:22Speaker 2: it's nice for you to come back. I mean, I'm
- 0:24Speaker 2: in sitting here. Most people ask you to do interviews.
- 0:28Speaker 3: People must still comes up and say, hey, Joe, you
- 0:29Speaker 3: got time to come and sit with Sure, no problem
- 0:31Speaker 3: over here.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I'm just gonna go hit a few balls, he say.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Our guys are going to take a little bit of
- 0:35Speaker 3: a break come back. So I'm sitting here and we're
- 0:38Speaker 3: doing our home show. Actually it's the Joe Thaisman Show.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Is dull good. Yes, we just really wanted to let
- 0:43Speaker 2: everybody know that he's here.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Now.
- 0:44Speaker 4: So how long have you played in this tournam you
- 0:46Speaker 4: want to ask me some question?
- 0:47Speaker 2: How long have you played in this tournament?
- 0:48Speaker 4: Well, I've been coming here for about a decade.
- 0:51Speaker 1: I only played twice, and I only played in the program.
- 0:53Speaker 4: And I have to be honest.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I was upset that Trey Wingo was invited to play,
- 0:57Speaker 1: and I wasn't.
- 0:58Speaker 3: It's a little bit like Philip Rivers getting the job
- 1:00Speaker 3: as a quarterback. All those other guys are sitting on
- 1:02Speaker 3: the sidelines and what are we.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Chopping levery It's like Anderson Cooper.
- 1:06Speaker 4: I don't know if you saw this.
- 1:07Speaker 1: He was live on TV and he had realized that
- 1:09Speaker 1: George Stepanopolis was invited to the Kelsey wedding and he wasn't.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Well, hey, it's great to have you back. Well, thank you, Joe.
- 1:18Speaker 5: Joe, do not tempt Stu Gotts with this because he
- 1:20Speaker 5: will turn the show into the jo I will.
- 1:24Speaker 4: That's my dream? You kidding me, Joe?
- 1:26Speaker 1: Where else could you be other than Lake Tahoe for
- 1:28Speaker 1: this tournament? Where you're on the drive you joth Eisman's
- 1:31Speaker 1: on the driving range, You're right next to Larry David,
- 1:33Speaker 1: Sean McDonough and then Larry David and Gary Sheffield just
- 1:37Speaker 1: break out in conversation.
- 1:38Speaker 4: It's an amazing place.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Gary, Vince Coleman's he's back this year.
- 1:44Speaker 2: I said to Larry, I said, how did your round
- 1:46Speaker 2: go this morning?
- 1:47Speaker 3: Horrible? Yes, it was one word horrible? Yes, Hi, Well
- 1:55Speaker 3: nice nice to hit balls next to you. What a
- 1:58Speaker 3: terrific guy.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Amazing, What an amazing event that that could happen though, right,
- 2:02Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's.
- 2:03Speaker 3: The whole thing about the American Century Championship is you
- 2:05Speaker 3: never know who you're going to run to, You never
- 2:08Speaker 3: know who you're going to meet. We have ten new
- 2:09Speaker 3: people here at this one, and like I said, it's
- 2:13Speaker 3: my thirty sixth of the thirty seven years that I've
- 2:15Speaker 3: been fortunate enough to be able to play in this,
- 2:17Speaker 3: and I absolutely love it.
- 2:18Speaker 2: And I mean the weather has just been spectacularing.
- 2:21Speaker 3: It's going to be you know, mid late yeah, probably
- 2:24Speaker 3: high seventies for the rounds. We start a little late tomorrow,
- 2:28Speaker 3: and it's going to be so much fun. But American
- 2:31Speaker 3: Century does so many wonderful things, and you know, you
- 2:34Speaker 3: and I have talked about this. They donate forty percent
- 2:37Speaker 3: of their dividends to the Dour Institute for Research on
- 2:40Speaker 3: Cancer and Diseases. Yes, now, I can't think of another
- 2:43Speaker 3: company that donates as much of their profit, well basically
- 2:46Speaker 3: their dividends to do something in research. And that's that's
- 2:50Speaker 3: why I love being a part of it. I mean
- 2:52Speaker 3: it's yes, it's the competition. Yes, it's the chance because
- 2:55Speaker 3: we're competition, junkies and core. And when you leave like
- 2:58Speaker 3: the game of football, like I did, you you just
- 3:00Speaker 3: erg you just yearn for something else to be able
- 3:03Speaker 3: to compete in. But yet there's so much good that
- 3:06Speaker 3: comes from this. Because somebody asked me earlier, says, what
- 3:08Speaker 3: do you what do you enjoy most about being here
- 3:10Speaker 3: at the American Century Championship. I said, truthfully, it's the
- 3:14Speaker 3: opportunity to be able to be a part of something
- 3:16Speaker 3: that contributes so much to help other people. Yes, And
- 3:19Speaker 3: then of course it's the competitive part of it. I
- 3:21Speaker 3: just I can't get it out of my system. I mean,
- 3:24Speaker 3: this course has not gotten any shorter, No, but my
- 3:27Speaker 3: game has.
- 3:29Speaker 4: What's the best finish you've had here?
- 3:31Speaker 2: I think I finished fifth?
- 3:32Speaker 4: Wow.
- 3:33Speaker 3: A long time ago. That's when we were we were
- 3:35Speaker 3: stroke play. Right now, we're what's called a modified Stapleford system. Yes,
- 3:40Speaker 3: And for people that don't understand the Stapleford system, in
- 3:43Speaker 3: our tournament here you get zero points for bogies, you
- 3:47Speaker 3: get one point for a par three points.
- 3:51Speaker 2: For a birdie.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I think, five points for an eagle, and ten for
- 3:54Speaker 3: a hold in one, which Steph had a few years ago.
- 3:57Speaker 3: But the big kicker is if you get a double
- 4:00Speaker 3: bogie or worse, you lose two points. Last year on Sunday,
- 4:04Speaker 3: I had seven double bogies, which means basically I gave
- 4:08Speaker 3: up fourteen points and you just can't overcome it. But
- 4:13Speaker 3: just being able to be out here and work on
- 4:14Speaker 3: the game, and you know, my son's on the bag
- 4:16Speaker 3: for me, and it makes it so much fun, So good, Joe.
- 4:18Speaker 5: One of the first time players this year, Kyle Hamilton
- 4:21Speaker 5: from the Baltimore Ravens, as a fellow Notre Dame guy. Right,
- 4:25Speaker 5: is it kind of your responsibility to take him under
- 4:27Speaker 5: your wing this week?
- 4:27Speaker 2: N't know, I'm competing against them. I don't care.
- 4:32Speaker 3: If I have a chance to step on his toe
- 4:34Speaker 3: in the driving range, I might just do that now.
- 4:36Speaker 3: You tell them, Joe, I'm willing to help anybody do anything.
- 4:39Speaker 3: You know, it's great to have Kyle here. What a
- 4:41Speaker 3: what a spectacular career so far he's had in Baltimore,
- 4:43Speaker 3: and what an incredible career he had at the University
- 4:46Speaker 3: of Notre Dame. You know, he's one of those prototypical
- 4:48Speaker 3: safeties that everybody's looking for.
- 4:50Speaker 2: You're looking for a Kyle handle.
- 4:52Speaker 3: You go, I don't care go through every team on
- 4:54Speaker 3: the roster, every team in the national football You say,
- 4:57Speaker 3: if we could get someone like that, we'd be very lucky.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Speaking of Notre Dame, So, Mike Golick was here for
- 5:03Speaker 1: a couple of years and he's a good friend of
- 5:04Speaker 1: mine and a caddy for him, and he was so
- 5:06Speaker 1: bad at golf that they didn't invite him back. Joe, So,
- 5:08Speaker 1: I don't know if do you want to help him
- 5:09Speaker 1: out or like, what do you think? I promised i'd
- 5:11Speaker 1: ask someone, and so I'm going to ask you.
- 5:13Speaker 3: I think, from what I understand, the story was, it
- 5:15Speaker 3: has nothing to do with the invitation that was given.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Is you suggested that he go do something else, that
- 5:20Speaker 3: he could spend his time and it would be.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Worthwhile anywhere but out here on a golf course.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I was I thought you were the culprit behind all that,
- 5:28Speaker 3: to be honest.
- 5:30Speaker 4: You know me.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Well, Jeff Senior, act, how do we feel about Notre
- 5:38Speaker 1: Dame this year?
- 5:38Speaker 4: Huh?
- 5:38Speaker 2: I'm excited.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yea.
- 5:40Speaker 3: We know we got hosed last year, and so does
- 5:42Speaker 3: the NCAA and so does the Competition Committee and all
- 5:46Speaker 3: of that, and it's and unfortunately what happened to Notre
- 5:51Speaker 3: Dame last year has basically forced a rule change, and
- 5:55Speaker 3: I think it'll be better for college football than long run.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I will say this, and this is the first I
- 5:59Speaker 3: was going to tweet this out at Joe Heisman yep.
- 6:03Speaker 6: Well seven yeah, but I I decided to do it
- 6:07Speaker 6: on your show and say that I believe that college
- 6:10Speaker 6: football has reached a point where they have to get
- 6:13Speaker 6: rid of the stoppage of the of the.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Game after first outs. Wow, the games are too long. Yep,
- 6:20Speaker 3: you could pick up thirty minutes. It did it in baseball.
- 6:22Speaker 3: You got the pitch count, you got the pitch clock.
- 6:25Speaker 3: In baseball, they're doing everything they can. You know that
- 6:27Speaker 3: you cut the time back.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I want.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I would love to see the governing bodies of college
- 6:33Speaker 3: football sit down and say, you know, we don't need
- 6:36Speaker 3: to stop the clock after first downs, just keep playing
- 6:39Speaker 3: football and and that to me would be a big
- 6:42Speaker 3: boost and giving people a chance to spend three hours
- 6:45Speaker 3: instead of three hours and forty five minutes in a stance.
- 6:48Speaker 1: But I'll tell you what, Joe, if Notre Dame is
- 6:50Speaker 1: down six driving for a winning touchdown and you're not
- 6:53Speaker 1: getting those first down timeouts.
- 6:55Speaker 4: You're going to be outraged.
- 6:56Speaker 6: We're not going to be down six for that much
- 6:58Speaker 6: time to go, of course, yes, but you wouldn't be
- 7:04Speaker 6: out there. You wouldn't want that, Joe.
- 7:09Speaker 5: On Thursday, the commanders announced that they were going to
- 7:12Speaker 5: retire to the number forty four, warden by your former teammate.
- 7:15Speaker 4: John Riggins. He loves them.
- 7:17Speaker 5: Feels long overdue, right.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Yes it is.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Yeah, John should have had his jersey retired a long
- 7:23Speaker 3: time ago.
- 7:23Speaker 2: But you know what, now that it's here, it's wonderful.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I mean, John was such a special part of what
- 7:28Speaker 3: we were able to do in the early eighties with
- 7:30Speaker 3: our football team and.
- 7:31Speaker 2: His ability to be able to break tackles.
- 7:34Speaker 3: The thing was, when he came from the Jets, everybody
- 7:37Speaker 3: you know didn't know what to do with him. Joe
- 7:39Speaker 3: Gibbs was incredible when he came to crafting an offense
- 7:43Speaker 3: that took advantage of what guys did, and John was
- 7:46Speaker 3: one of them. We were built around John, no question
- 7:49Speaker 3: are the eighties football team was built around John Riggins.
- 7:52Speaker 2: He was going to be our bellcow.
- 7:54Speaker 3: As a matter of fact, Saturday night before Super Bowl seventeen,
- 7:57Speaker 3: we were sitting in a quarterback meeting and Coach said, look,
- 8:00Speaker 3: keep this game within within a score. We're gonna be
- 8:03Speaker 3: fine because we're bigger upfront and we're gonna wear him down,
- 8:07Speaker 3: and John's gonna wear him down. And that's exactly the
- 8:09Speaker 3: way the game went. Coach foresaw that, and it was
- 8:12Speaker 3: just the genius and to have John's abilities to be
- 8:14Speaker 3: able to go out and do the things that he
- 8:17Speaker 3: has done. He's a terrific receiver. Never really had to
- 8:19Speaker 3: use him because we had Joe Washington. But then on
- 8:22Speaker 3: top of all that, you have the ability to be
- 8:24Speaker 3: able to go into the middle of a defense and
- 8:28Speaker 3: be able. I watched him outrun Michael Downs against the
- 8:30Speaker 3: Dallas Cowboys.
- 8:31Speaker 2: We ran a quick hitter up the middle.
- 8:33Speaker 3: John circled the defense and went sixty plus yards for
- 8:36Speaker 3: a touchdown.
- 8:36Speaker 2: That's how fast he was.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Something that people absolutely don't appreciate as his speed. These
- 8:43Speaker 3: these fans that want Stu to do something, I can't
- 8:45Speaker 3: believe you hearhim in the background autographs stew.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Scotts at least coming here, Toots. We need you, you
- 8:52Speaker 2: know at your fans.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Dow waw wins to.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Show with us on the diving range at the American
- 9:01Speaker 1: Century Championships in Lake Tahoe. What was the first Well,
- 9:05Speaker 1: I guess the second year because you didn't show up
- 9:07Speaker 1: for the first year.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Do you remember what your first tournament was like here?
- 9:10Speaker 4: Because it wasn't this job.
- 9:11Speaker 2: It was scary. Really yeah, well interesting.
- 9:14Speaker 3: We have video of our the first tournaments, the early years,
- 9:18Speaker 3: back in the nineties and nineteen ninety.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Believe was the first one.
- 9:22Speaker 3: If you look at seventeen's a great barometer of where
- 9:25Speaker 3: we were at that time. You look at that particular
- 9:29Speaker 3: hole seventeen is on Lake Tahoe. We get about three
- 9:33Speaker 3: to four thousand people there in about two to three
- 9:36Speaker 3: hundred boats.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Now, yes, back then there was one boat. It was
- 9:42Speaker 2: probably grounded.
- 9:43Speaker 3: I don't know, but we have one boat there and
- 9:45Speaker 3: about one hundred people lining that particular hole.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Now it's just jam packed and it's ten deep. It's
- 9:53Speaker 2: an incredible experience. I believe this. I think the PGA
- 9:56Speaker 2: saw what we did here in Lake Tahoe many years ago.
- 10:00Speaker 3: And you look at the you know, Phoenix open, you
- 10:02Speaker 3: look at waste vantages, look at you look at different
- 10:05Speaker 3: holes now on the tour, and that's basically what you get.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Yes, you get you get a theater for people to.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Be able to cheer and root and yell and scream
- 10:15Speaker 3: where it used to be the quote unquote the gentleman's game.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Sh don't say anything not Now fans are.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Going Crazy's great, It's wonderat It's wonderful.
- 10:23Speaker 5: Joe, and you're thirty six years here. With all the
- 10:25Speaker 5: celebrities that have been here, has there ever been one
- 10:27Speaker 5: where were like, I can't wait to meet this person
- 10:29Speaker 5: or somebody who got you even stars.
- 10:31Speaker 2: More recently, Miles Tiller.
- 10:33Speaker 3: I'm a big fan of top Gun Maverick and I
- 10:35Speaker 3: had a chance to hit Paul's with him last year.
- 10:37Speaker 3: I've seen him earlier this year as well. I just
- 10:40Speaker 3: I think he's a terrific actor. And it's really funny
- 10:43Speaker 3: when you run into people here and you see them
- 10:45Speaker 3: and their actors in particular, you start to see different
- 10:50Speaker 3: movies and shows that they did way back when they
- 10:53Speaker 3: got started, and they don't look the same. You know,
- 10:56Speaker 3: they're just they've grown up basically in the whole thing,
- 10:59Speaker 3: and Miles is one of them. But one of the
- 11:01Speaker 3: most incredible experiences I had early on, I had a
- 11:05Speaker 3: chance to play around with Mark McGuire and Michael.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Jordan Wowow Special and you watch those two hit.
- 11:13Speaker 3: The ball, and you know, Michael's always been an incredibly
- 11:16Speaker 3: wonderful human being and a friend that I've known for many,
- 11:18Speaker 3: many years. And he's just done incredibly well with everything
- 11:22Speaker 3: that he touches. I mean, his NASCAR team is absolutely
- 11:25Speaker 3: on fire. Michael continues to be I think a driving
- 11:29Speaker 3: force as far as what they do from a leadership standpoint.
- 11:32Speaker 4: How competitive was he during that round?
- 11:34Speaker 2: He's always competitive. I mean, you know, you look up
- 11:38Speaker 2: Michael Jordan the dictionary. He says, oh competitive, Yes, extremely competitive.
- 11:43Speaker 2: See extremely extremely competitive. They're all there.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Has he invited you down to his course yet?
- 11:48Speaker 2: No?
- 11:48Speaker 4: No, But you know you could just show up there, Joe,
- 11:50Speaker 4: and he'd let you.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:51Speaker 2: No, they wouldn't let me in the gate.
- 11:52Speaker 4: I have, Joe, they let me in the gate. I
- 11:54Speaker 4: went there.
- 11:55Speaker 2: But it's just just he's, like I say, he's just
- 11:59Speaker 2: a wonderful human being, an incredible guy.
- 12:00Speaker 1: You mentioned Joe Gibbs. I'm certain your answer is going
- 12:03Speaker 1: to be yes to this. You need one coach to
- 12:06Speaker 1: win a game. You could choose from any coach in
- 12:08Speaker 1: the history of sports. Is it going to be Joe Gibbs?
- 12:10Speaker 3: It would be mine because of my experience with Joe.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Joe was so smart at adapting to things. In nineteen
- 12:18Speaker 3: eighty three, we led the league in scoring. Yeah, five
- 12:20Speaker 3: hundred and forty one points, I believe it was. And
- 12:22Speaker 3: when we used to sit in a meeting and prepare
- 12:24Speaker 3: for a game, I would listen to the game plan
- 12:27Speaker 3: and I would sit there and I would say, Okay,
- 12:30Speaker 3: we're going to win this football game. I'm sure it's
- 12:32Speaker 3: just a question how many points are we going to score?
- 12:34Speaker 3: When it came to the red zone inside the twenty,
- 12:37Speaker 3: there was nobody better. I don't think there's anybody better today.
- 12:39Speaker 3: His concepts made so much sense, the things that he
- 12:42Speaker 3: taught us, the things that he wanted to do, the
- 12:44Speaker 3: places he wanted me to look to go with the football.
- 12:47Speaker 3: I will tell you a funny story about Coach Gibbs
- 12:49Speaker 3: and I and this is after Super Bowl eighteen. So
- 12:52Speaker 3: in Super Bowl eighteen, before the end of the half,
- 12:55Speaker 3: Coach calls Rocket Screen. Now we'd played the Raiders earlier
- 12:59Speaker 3: in the year, ran rockets green with Joe Washington, and
- 13:01Speaker 3: he went ninety five yards with a touchdown. So we're
- 13:04Speaker 3: on the twelve yard line, twelve seconds to go. He
- 13:07Speaker 3: argues with me, but I'm on the mic now, so
- 13:09Speaker 3: he can't argue. So he calls Rockets green, and I'm
- 13:13Speaker 3: staying on the sidelines with him, and I said, Coach,
- 13:15Speaker 3: I just don't feel good about putting the ball in
- 13:16Speaker 3: the air with this little time. He said it worked
- 13:20Speaker 3: against him last time, and I thought to myself, you
- 13:23Speaker 3: don't think they know that.
- 13:25Speaker 2: So now I go into a huddle, I call Rocket's green.
- 13:27Speaker 3: I drop back, and all of a sudden, everybody looks
- 13:29Speaker 3: like they took Millan out of the game.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Put in Jack Squireck.
- 13:33Speaker 3: So all of a sudden, everybody drops into his zone
- 13:35Speaker 3: except Jack, anticipating we're going to run this. Jack's I
- 13:39Speaker 3: got the balls, just relieve, just coming out of my hand.
- 13:42Speaker 3: I see Jack break for the balls a touchdown, So
- 13:44Speaker 3: you know we're down now twenty one three at that time.
- 13:47Speaker 3: So I see Joe at a fundraiser. He does an
- 13:49Speaker 3: incredible things in the community with his youth for tomorrow
- 13:52Speaker 3: schools and campuses, and I said, Coach, I got a
- 13:56Speaker 3: beef to pick with you. This was like five years
- 13:57Speaker 3: after he's what's that? I said, you know that call
- 14:00Speaker 3: that you made in Super Bowl eighteen that rocket screen.
- 14:02Speaker 3: That could have been one of the worst you've ever made,
- 14:04Speaker 3: he said, Joe, let me be the case. But that
- 14:06Speaker 3: passed you through absolutely the.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Worst I've ever seen.
- 14:11Speaker 1: I noticed you had to let a lot of time
- 14:13Speaker 1: go by before you told j A lot of times
- 14:16Speaker 1: you were tempted to tell him right.
- 14:17Speaker 4: In the game.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Oh no, I'll tell you another one that happens in
- 14:20Speaker 2: that game.
- 14:21Speaker 3: So for those people that do understand football, there's different
- 14:24Speaker 3: types of defense. There's a four to three, which are
- 14:26Speaker 3: four down linemen and three linebackers, and there's a three
- 14:29Speaker 3: to four where there's three down linemen and four linebackers.
- 14:32Speaker 3: The Raiders played a three to four four linebackers. What
- 14:35Speaker 3: they used to do is they used to walk up
- 14:37Speaker 3: a linebacker to occupy your guard who had a double
- 14:40Speaker 3: response man ahead of him, man out to his right
- 14:42Speaker 3: or left. Well, Mike Davis was their safety, and we
- 14:45Speaker 3: got down around a fifteen yard line one time. And
- 14:48Speaker 3: so what they do is they're in the three to four.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Russ Grimm is my left guard. He sets, the guy
- 14:53Speaker 3: in front of him doesn't come. He turns out the
- 14:57Speaker 3: linebacker on the outside doesn't come, but Davis has lined
- 15:00Speaker 3: up outside him. And we don't count him. So Russ
- 15:03Speaker 3: turns back in. He blows me up. I'm walking to
- 15:06Speaker 3: the sidelines. My helmet's on crooked, my shoulder pads are.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Hanging out of my my shirt.
- 15:10Speaker 3: I walked up to coach, he said, coach, who's blocking
- 15:12Speaker 3: Mike Davis. He looks down at this play sheet and
- 15:16Speaker 3: he says, he's supposed to be block I said.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Look at me. Does this look like she's being blocked?
- 15:26Speaker 2: We have all those moments in the game, Joe.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Quarterbacking just came second nature to you. But there are
- 15:32Speaker 5: so many times where we're watching the NFL now and
- 15:34Speaker 5: people are questioning what quarterbacks are doing.
- 15:37Speaker 4: How hard is quarterback?
- 15:38Speaker 2: Actually, yes, it's the hardest position in all sports.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Are the most important it is. I think you can't
- 15:44Speaker 3: win without it. We saw, you know, the Chiefs challenging
- 15:47Speaker 3: for championship. After championship, all of a sudden, Patrick goes
- 15:50Speaker 3: down in there, six to eleven. The Indianapolis Colts, you lose,
- 15:53Speaker 3: you know, Jones Jones, and all of a sudden, you know,
- 15:56Speaker 3: they're like eight and one, all of a sudden they
- 15:58Speaker 3: missed the playoffs. It's a very critical position because we're
- 16:02Speaker 3: managers of the game. And when you lose the manager,
- 16:05Speaker 3: you really you lose the idea and the ability to
- 16:08Speaker 3: be able to get yourself in and out of bad situations.
- 16:11Speaker 3: And when things start to compound in a negative way,
- 16:14Speaker 3: you need somebody there to put their finger in the
- 16:15Speaker 3: dike and slow it down. And to me, it's the toughest.
- 16:18Speaker 3: I mean, you don't get any time. It's not like
- 16:20Speaker 3: pictures in baseball. I mean, you know what you do
- 16:22Speaker 3: is you pitch six innings and then you take four
- 16:25Speaker 3: days off and go play golf and enjoy yourself. And
- 16:27Speaker 3: you know, for us, I always felt like what they
- 16:29Speaker 3: ought to do with with pitchers and golfers is have
- 16:32Speaker 3: somebody line up, you know, three or four yards away
- 16:34Speaker 3: from them. Then when you deliver the pitch, just have
- 16:36Speaker 3: somebody knock the.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Crap at you and then go back and get on
- 16:40Speaker 2: the mat. And then you do that ten times. You
- 16:46Speaker 2: kit me out.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Anybody twice any You do the same thing with golfers.
- 16:50Speaker 3: They stand there in that pose and it's like, you know,
- 16:52Speaker 3: oh I hit such a beautiful shot. Well you know
- 16:54Speaker 3: I used to throw the ball. Oh I threw up.
- 16:58Speaker 2: You don't get time to think about they should have.
- 17:03Speaker 5: Ye.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Yeah, that's great. You'll have them running at you as
- 17:05Speaker 2: you're as you're looking down the fairway and what do
- 17:07Speaker 2: you see? You see are all parts of fun.

- 18:24Speaker 1: Taylor and I are big Nick fans, and so that
- 18:25Speaker 1: championship youngtulation.
- 18:27Speaker 4: Yes, thank you. It meant so much to Oz, It
- 18:28Speaker 4: met so much to that city.
- 18:30Speaker 1: And I feel like the Commanders are one of those
- 18:32Speaker 1: teams that have that same kind of meaning to the city,
- 18:35Speaker 1: to the area, and that fan base is starving for
- 18:37Speaker 1: them to get back into its right.
- 18:39Speaker 2: It has always been that way.
- 18:40Speaker 3: We got a sampling of it of a couple of
- 18:42Speaker 3: years ago when we got to the NFC Championship game.
- 18:45Speaker 3: But how do you let somebody in a basketball game
- 18:49Speaker 3: that is so important? How do you let one guy
- 18:53Speaker 3: of the ninety four points that were scoring score forty
- 18:56Speaker 3: five of them and he's a guard. Yeah, he's not
- 19:00Speaker 3: a six foot ten guy, he's not a seventeen foot person.
- 19:04Speaker 4: No, how do you?
- 19:05Speaker 3: But what an incredible performance? I mean, it was hats
- 19:08Speaker 3: off to the Knicks. They put on a great show.
- 19:10Speaker 1: And it.
- 19:10Speaker 3: You know, you sit there and you're thinking, you know,
- 19:13Speaker 3: the city of New York needs something good to happen. Yes,
- 19:17Speaker 3: and it did happen for him and the fans of
- 19:19Speaker 3: the Knicks. But you don't think that the Giants are
- 19:22Speaker 3: going to wind up in the same situation, in the
- 19:24Speaker 3: same division as the commander.
- 19:26Speaker 2: So all you Giant fans out there, just enjoy the Knicks.
- 19:29Speaker 1: But Joe, you love a guy like Brunson, right, Like
- 19:31Speaker 1: a lot of people didn't believe in him, and he
- 19:33Speaker 1: has proven a lot of people wrong.
- 19:34Speaker 4: You love those stories.
- 19:35Speaker 2: And he just didn't leave. He stayed. Yes, he stayed
- 19:38Speaker 2: because he believed what was going on.
- 19:40Speaker 3: It was I know. I remember talking to Barry Sanders
- 19:42Speaker 3: when he retired from football. He said, why, you know, Barry,
- 19:45Speaker 3: you're so close to setting the record. Why he said,
- 19:47Speaker 3: you know, I just didn't feel like they were committed
- 19:50Speaker 3: to win. And that's that's the whole thing is. You
- 19:53Speaker 3: need to put a group of people together that are
- 19:55Speaker 3: committed to win. That's the bottom line. I don't care
- 19:58Speaker 3: how good you are, how talent you are, how fast
- 20:00Speaker 3: you are, how strong you are, how tall you are, whatever,
- 20:02Speaker 3: It doesn't matter if you're committed to win. And that's
- 20:05Speaker 3: what we had in Washington. We had a group of
- 20:07Speaker 3: guys that were committed to win. I called it a
- 20:10Speaker 3: group of characters with characters. That's what we were. It was,
- 20:13Speaker 3: you know, anybody, any one guy could make the difference
- 20:16Speaker 3: in the game, and anyone one guy would have loved it.
- 20:19Speaker 4: Can you rank these three guys for me?
- 20:20Speaker 1: Because I had this conversation with Golick because I feel
- 20:23Speaker 1: like the third guy who was who was on Washington
- 20:25Speaker 1: doesn't get enough credit.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Else Reggie White, Dexter Manley. I feel like Dexter doesn't
- 20:30Speaker 4: get enough credit for how great he was.
- 20:31Speaker 3: No, you know, because Dexter played the defensive line position. Reggie, again,
- 20:39Speaker 3: it's tough to pick. LT was the most incredible force
- 20:42Speaker 3: in football at that time. As a matter of fact,
- 20:44Speaker 3: when we used to put up defenses on our boards,
- 20:47Speaker 3: we used to label guys with different letters, like V
- 20:51Speaker 3: was for defensive linemen, C was for corners, S was
- 20:54Speaker 3: for safety, B was for backers. But on our board
- 20:57Speaker 3: there was one big fifty six with a circle around it,
- 21:00Speaker 3: which meant, everybody pay attention to LT over here, will
- 21:04Speaker 3: pay attention to him. To this guy Reggie was another one,
- 21:07Speaker 3: you know by what We did a Green Bay game
- 21:09Speaker 3: and Reggie had a hole in his thigh and I said, are.
- 21:12Speaker 2: You gonna play Arena? Are you gonna play with that?
- 21:14Speaker 3: I mean it was a hole in his thigh. Yes,
- 21:16Speaker 3: he said, And this is this is the God's honest truth.
- 21:20Speaker 3: He says, God will take care of him. And he
- 21:23Speaker 3: went out and he left like two sacks and of
- 21:24Speaker 3: course ball, I mean, it's like and he just played
- 21:27Speaker 3: that game. And then Dexter was Dexter was was so quick,
- 21:31Speaker 3: he was so quick, so face. But you know, Darryl
- 21:33Speaker 3: Grant played next to him, Dave Buds played next to him.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Charles Mann was on the other side that front four.
- 21:38Speaker 3: I'd put up with any front four in the National
- 21:40Speaker 3: Football League at any point in time. And they really
- 21:43Speaker 3: were special. But people don't realize that. I was talking
- 21:46Speaker 3: to somebody earlier today. In Super Bowl seventeen that we
- 21:50Speaker 3: won against the Dolphins, David Woodley threw fourteen passes. He
- 21:55Speaker 3: completed four of them, every one of them in the
- 21:58Speaker 3: first half. I don't ever believe there's been a Super
- 22:01Speaker 3: Bowl where the one of the teams has gone oh
- 22:05Speaker 3: for whatever the number is in the second half he
- 22:09Speaker 3: went over with it.
- 22:10Speaker 1: So that's how good our defense was. Joe, We're gonna
- 22:12Speaker 1: let you go American Century champions. Well, it's your show.
- 22:16Speaker 1: You could say, as long as you want me to
- 22:17Speaker 1: book you some guests, I'm gonna go hit some ball.
- 22:21Speaker 1: I just want to give one more story because you
- 22:22Speaker 1: were there last night, just to point out how special
- 22:25Speaker 1: this weekend is and why everyone insists on coming back
- 22:28Speaker 1: every year. The standing ovation for Matthew Kuld Chuck Brady
- 22:32Speaker 1: could Chuck bringing home the goals was that amazing.
- 22:36Speaker 3: I mean, and hats off to our USA soccer team.
- 22:39Speaker 3: You know, they put such an incredible effort forward and you.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Know they just got you know, they got overwhelmed. Yeah,
- 22:45Speaker 2: I held him.
- 22:45Speaker 1: I had Matthew on earlier and he started getting emotional
- 22:48Speaker 1: talking about last night because it's not just getting the
- 22:50Speaker 1: standing ovation, it's that room giving him a standing ovation exactly.
- 22:54Speaker 3: I mean, it's it's a lot of the people in
- 22:57Speaker 3: that room have either won Emmys or Academy Awards or
- 23:00Speaker 3: World championship. So you're basically in a room of peers. Yes,
- 23:04Speaker 3: and they understand and know the price that you paid
- 23:07Speaker 3: to get where you are. And to understand the mountain
- 23:10Speaker 3: that you had to climb to be able to be
- 23:12Speaker 3: where you are. That's why we appreciate both he and
- 23:14Speaker 3: his brother. Now they're gonna play together. Yes, you know,
- 23:17Speaker 3: hockey's back.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Fantastic.
- 23:19Speaker 1: We appreciate the time as though we Sir, you've always
- 23:20Speaker 1: been great to me. We love this tournament. Go hit
- 23:23Speaker 1: some balls, Joe.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Thanks Buddy.
- 23:24Speaker 4: I want to put a flyer on you. Okay, no,
- 23:26Speaker 4: don't
