Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So game patch ban, we're one year on, six hundred
- 0:03Speaker 1: and forty three items seized, eight hundred and fifty six charges,
- 0:05Speaker 1: one hundred and eighty eight convictions, thirty eight thousand fewer
- 0:08Speaker 1: victims of serious violent crime. Dennis o'reiley's lifetime Black Power
- 0:12Speaker 1: member and community advocate, with me this morning, Dennis, Good morning.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Good morning, sir.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Has it been a success.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Well, I think a reduction in the number of victims
- 0:22Speaker 2: is a good thing. Firearms up the street is a
- 0:24Speaker 2: good thing. And not too sure about the seige of clothing.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You can get stuff on Temu if you want. It's
- 0:31Speaker 2: behavior that counts. But no, this ban has been the
- 0:35Speaker 2: patch ban has been well implemented. Paradoxically, it's by the
- 0:39Speaker 2: very same leadership team that's been vilified very much. You know,
- 0:44Speaker 2: mister Basham was the guy that stared that, and I
- 0:48Speaker 2: suppose it's under the direction of mister Costa and Tania Kurra.
- 0:53Speaker 2: So it must seem like a I know, it's the
- 0:55Speaker 2: fagship policy for the government, and it must seem a
- 0:58Speaker 2: bit like a bit of a turd sam which but yes,
- 1:02Speaker 2: it has worked.
- 1:03Speaker 1: You take the sandwich and just leave the turd on
- 1:05Speaker 1: the side. How about the what's on the ground, like
- 1:09Speaker 1: gang members, what is their life like without a patch on?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Does it do they Does it change dynamics?
- 1:16Speaker 2: Well, in the main, I think most people are quite
- 1:20Speaker 2: happy about it, not annoying the public and not annoying
- 1:24Speaker 2: each other as much. Now there's a bit of betwixt
- 1:28Speaker 2: and between, and I was really hoping that we'd be
- 1:31Speaker 2: able to put a lot more effort into Remember this
- 1:36Speaker 2: is not only the sort of anniversary of the Patch band,
- 1:40Speaker 2: it's also the anniversary of the apology by the government
- 1:45Speaker 2: for abuse and state care. And when we talk about
- 1:49Speaker 2: gangs in New Zealand, we sort of think about Rory
- 1:53Speaker 2: and Hemy lurking down at them all. But we've got
- 1:57Speaker 2: real gangs now, we've got cartels bringing in mesymphetamine and
- 2:01Speaker 2: unprecedented quantities into the country. Yes, and we need to.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Sort of telling about what are What have you been
- 2:09Speaker 1: telling the members that you speak to about the Mexicans.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Well, not just the Mexicans. Well, I'm saying that they
- 2:19Speaker 2: will recruit the sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters
- 2:24Speaker 2: of the current gang Faro. They'll promise them the world
- 2:29Speaker 2: through North American hyper materialism, but the only way they'll
- 2:34Speaker 2: get to enjoy it is from six feet.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Under Dennis o'reiley, former Black Power Member, in fact, lifetime
- 2:40Speaker 1: Black Power Member, community advocate.
