- 0:01Genesis chapter 24. Let us pray.
- 0:08Our Father who is in heaven, holy is your name.
- 0:17May your Kingdom come and your will be done on this earth, just
- 0:24as it is there in heaven. Give us this day Our Daily
- 0:29Bread. Forgive us for our sins as we
- 0:35forgive those who sin against us.
- 0:40Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
- 0:46For yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and
- 0:51ever. Jesus Christ, you reign supreme.
- 0:55You reign to the end of time. You reign Jesus Christ as the
- 1:01most high God. You are the loftiest centre of
- 1:06all the universe. You are high and lifted up.
- 1:10That we look to you and receive our salvation.
- 1:13We see the wounds. We see the crown of thorns.
- 1:17We see you as the Lamb that was slain before the foundations of
- 1:22the earth. We see you as the lion of the
- 1:25tribe of Judah, roaring mightily, coming back with all
- 1:29your splendor, with all of the heavenly hosts coming back on
- 1:33the clouds. God, we see you high and lifted
- 1:36up. We thank you for salvation.
- 1:38We thank you that our names are written in the Lamb's Book of
- 1:41Life. We thank you for the down
- 1:43payment of the Holy Ghost. We thank you for a sound mind.
- 1:47We thank you, God, for the ability to reason, to think and
- 1:52to come and to Sup and to dine and commune and Koinonia with
- 1:57you. Father God, the God of the
- 2:00universe, we come through the holiest of holy places.
- 2:04We come through covered in the blood of Jesus Christ, from the
- 2:08soles of our feet to the tops of our head, our palms, our backs,
- 2:12God our faces and our stomachs. God, our legs, Gird them up so
- 2:18that we can stand in your presence.
- 2:20I deny we love you, we love everything about you.
- 2:24We love that you were good. We love because you first loved
- 2:28us and you chose us and you cleaned us up and you made us
- 2:33whole. Help us to be holy as you are
- 2:35holy. And it's in Jesus Christ holy
- 2:38and precious and powerful name that I pray.
- 2:42Amen. Well, let's start in verse one.
- 2:48And Abraham was old and well stricken in age, and the Lord
- 2:53had blessed Abraham in all things.
- 2:56So we know that Abraham was called out of the land of the Ur
- 3:00of the Chaldees. We know that God took him and
- 3:03promised him that he would be the father of many nations, more
- 3:08innumerable than the stars in the sky or the sand on the
- 3:12seashore. And we see that he even in his
- 3:16disobedience in Egypt, even whenever he allowed Lot to take
- 3:22whichever side, we see that no matter what Abraham did, he was
- 3:27richly blessed by God. He was a friend of God.
- 3:31Verse 2 And Abraham said to his oldest servant of his house that
- 3:36ruled over all that he had put, I pray you, your hand under my
- 3:41thigh. So perhaps this was Eleazar, the
- 3:45one that was to inherit all of Abraham's wealth, had Isaac not
- 3:52showed up on the scene. And you remember when Abraham
- 3:56was arguing with God, and God said, I am your reward.
- 4:00And he said yes, but you've given me no children.
- 4:04And this Eleazar will inherit everything that I have.
- 4:07Now we see perhaps Eleazar popped back up as this lead
- 4:14servant and look at how he loved him.
- 4:17And he had him place his hand on his thigh and they would sit
- 4:20between this cut covenant and he would make him swear that he
- 4:26would do exactly what he's promising to do.
- 4:29And Abraham would have Eleazar to go and to find a wife for his
- 4:34son Isaac. Three.
- 4:38And I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the
- 4:43God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife to my son of the
- 4:47daughters of the Canaanites among whom I dwell.
- 4:51So we remember that Canaan was cursed because hams
- 4:55disobedience, hams going in and ridiculing his father's
- 5:00drunkenness and nakedness. And you see here that the entire
- 5:06land that Canaan had inhabited, Noah had pronounced a curse
- 5:13upon. And here, this is where God has
- 5:17LED Abraham into this promised land flowing with milk and
- 5:22honey. And we know that God's promises
- 5:25are faithful and true, and he knows exactly what he's doing.
- 5:28And it's not for us to approach any of Scripture from a
- 5:31moralistic feeling. We cannot go to God and shake
- 5:36our fists, call God into the courtroom and ask him what he is
- 5:39doing. Who has ever lent to God that
- 5:43God should repay mankind? It doesn't work that way.
- 5:46And so we see here that Abraham is saying, do not allow the Son
- 5:51of promise to marry into and be diluted by these people in the
- 5:59land of Canaan, which Abraham understood were it was not their
- 6:04rightful possession that they would be dispossessed of that
- 6:08land. And that the children of God,
- 6:11the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob promised to put them in
- 6:17that land. And that promise still stands
- 6:19today, friends. 4 But you shall go unto my country, and to my
- 6:29kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
- 6:32So he's telling him to go back to the land of Ur the Chaldees,
- 6:36and find his son a wife from there.
- 6:40Five. And the servants said to him,
- 6:42But what if the woman will not be willing to follow me unto
- 6:45this land? Must thy needs bring your son
- 6:48again into the land from where you came?
- 6:51So he's saying, if I go all the way there, and nobody will agree
- 6:54to come back, as your son's wife, should I take him there?
- 7:006 Abraham said to him, Beware that you do not bring my son
- 7:06there again. So Abraham understood that
- 7:10Canaan was the land of promise that God was going to give to
- 7:15Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, all of it Seven in the Lord God of
- 7:20heaven, which took me from my father's house and from my from
- 7:24the land of my kindred, which spoke unto me, and that swore
- 7:28unto me, saying unto your seed, I will give this land.
- 7:32He shall send his Angel before you, and you shall take a wife
- 7:37unto my son from there. So here Abraham is moving in the
- 7:40spirit of faith. He's telling Eleazar, listen,
- 7:43don't worry about it. God's going to go before you.
- 7:46God is going to curate this entire event.
- 7:49It's going to be a divine appointment.
- 7:52And here you can see the faith of Abraham.
- 7:56Aiden, if the woman will not be willing to follow you, then you
- 7:59shall be clear from this. My oath only bring not my son.
- 8:04There again, he's saying, listen, it doesn't matter if she
- 8:06wants to come back or not. I believe in God who can make
- 8:10all of this happen. But if it all falls apart,
- 8:13whatever you do, do not take Isaac back to the land of Ur,
- 8:17the Chaldees. 9 And the Servant put his hand under the thigh of
- 8:22Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning that matter.
- 8:27So what would have happened would have been an animals cut
- 8:31in two, the pieces laid splayed one side and the other.
- 8:36And then the two making the covenant would come in, and they
- 8:40would sit in the center of that bloody mess and grab each
- 8:44other's inner thigh, and they would look square in the face.
- 8:47And the idea behind it, friends, don't lose sight of what this is
- 8:54all about. The idea behind it is that
- 8:57whatever happened to that animal would happen to you if you do
- 9:00not hold up your end of the bargain. 10 And the servant took
- 9:0510 camels of the camels of his master, and he departed, for all
- 9:11the goods of his master were in his hand.
- 9:14And he arose and went to Mesopotamia under the city of
- 9:19Nahor. We remember that.
- 9:20Nahor was Abrahams brother. We remember that Abraham's dad
- 9:26had lost a son. We remember that all of this was
- 9:30transpiring in real, literal, geographical places.
- 9:34And what a mighty act of God that he would lead him 900 miles
- 9:39from Canaan all the way back to land of the earth, the Chaldees.
- 9:4511 And he made his camels to kneel down outside the city by a
- 9:49well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that
- 9:53women go out to draw water. So here Eleazar comes into that
- 9:58place. He's got this caravan, he's got
- 10:01many with him and lots of animal and livestock for the journey.
- 10:07And he comes and he kneels them down in the evening.
- 10:10And it would have been the time that the women came out to get
- 10:13water. 12 And he said, Oh, Lord God of my master Abraham, I pray
- 10:19you send me good speed this day and show kindness unto my master
- 10:24Abraham. Look at Elias are praying to the
- 10:26God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Yahweh 13 Behold, I stand
- 10:31here by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the
- 10:34city come out to draw water. So here Eleazar is connecting
- 10:40with Yahweh. He's praying fervently for a
- 10:43good report and that God would grant Abraham the his heart's
- 10:48desire. And God is still in the
- 10:50business, friends of marriage. He's still in the business,
- 10:53friends of procreation, and God's blessing is upon the
- 10:57family unit. 14 And let it come to pass that the damsel to whom
- 11:02I shall say, Let down your picture, I pray that I may
- 11:06drink, and she shall say drink, and I will give your camel's
- 11:10drink also. Let the same be she that you
- 11:15have appointed for your servant Isaac, and thereby shall I know
- 11:20that you have showed kindness unto my master.
- 11:22So here, this was the acid test that Eleazar would wait for the
- 11:27first woman to not only give him a drink, but also to suggest and
- 11:33to actually perform the giving of his camels.
- 11:38The water too, which would have been a very overwhelming task to
- 11:43try and give that many camels that much water so that they
- 11:49could drink and be satisfied. And so this was a test of
- 11:55character friends, not just a test of beauty.
- 11:58But let's see how God feels about it, and how He is going to
- 12:03do what He wants to do in this 2nd. 13 And it came to pass
- 12:11before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebecca came out,
- 12:15who was born to Beth you El, son of Milka, the wife of Nahor,
- 12:20Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
- 12:24So here we can see that the servant's prayer is answered. 16
- 12:28The damsel was very fair to look upon a virgin.
- 12:34Neither had any man known her, and she went down to the well
- 12:37and filled her picture and came up.
- 12:39So we can see here that God and his grace and his Providence is
- 12:44upon this entire scene. Not only does she have the work
- 12:48ethic that is going to be needed in order to carry on the
- 12:52genealogy of the Messiah and for all of Abraham's wealth that
- 12:57will be passed down to her, but she also is very beautiful to
- 13:02look upon. 17 And the servant ran to meet her and said, Let
- 13:08me, I pray you, drink a little water of your pitcher. 18 And
- 13:12she said, Drink, my Lord. And she hasted and let down her
- 13:17pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. 19 And when she had
- 13:21done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for your
- 13:24camels also until they have done drinking.
- 13:28So look at her heart. You can see that God answered
- 13:31Eleazar's prayer. 20 And she hasted and emptied her pitcher
- 13:35into the through, and ran again to the well to draw water, and
- 13:39drew for all his camels. What a mighty task she just
- 13:44performed. She has magnificent work ethic.
- 13:4721 And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit, whether
- 13:53the Lord had made his journey prosperous or not.
- 13:56So here he's locked in, He's in tune with Almighty God, and he's
- 14:01making sure that she is the one who's going to carry the seed of
- 14:05the Messiah in her womb. Friends, the genealogy that goes
- 14:10all the way back to Rebecca. And you can see here that
- 14:13Eleazar is a magnificent show of what a servant is to look like.
- 14:18He's only about His Master's business and that is our call.
- 14:21Friends, we are bond servants of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 14:25We wait on His every word, we watch His every move, and we
- 14:30only do what He asks us to do. Friends, never ever stepping out
- 14:35of His perfect and pleasing will for our lives. 22 And it came to
- 14:41pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a
- 14:44golden earring of half his Shekel weight 2 bracelets for
- 14:48her hands of 10 shekels weight of gold.
- 14:51This was a gift of preposterous amount of wealth.
- 14:58This showed that Abraham was more than capable of having this
- 15:04daughter-in-law for Isaac. 23 and said, Whose daughter are
- 15:10you? Tell me, I pray you, is there
- 15:13room in your father's house for us to lodge in?
- 15:1524 And she said to him, I'm the daughter of Beth Uel, the son of
- 15:20Milka, which she bore unto Nahor.
- 15:23So here it's a family connection, friends, this is
- 15:26Abraham's brother. This would have been Isaac's
- 15:29uncle, and this would have been his cousin.
- 15:31And back then, friends, this was not as polluted in the gene pool
- 15:36as today is, friends. And there would have been no,
- 15:40absolutely zero problem with this intermarriage.
- 15:47And this was a wonderful provision from God, that he
- 15:51would grant Abraham, someone of his own family, to marry Isaac.
- 15:5925 She said, Moreover, to him we have both straw and provender
- 16:05enough and room to lodge in. 26 And the man bowed down his head
- 16:10and worshipped the Lord. That is our rightful posture
- 16:14when God gives us the open doors.
- 16:19Friends, whenever there are things that are miraculous that
- 16:23only God can do, the very most worthy thing that you can do is
- 16:31bow down and worship a holy God. 27 And he said, Blessed be the
- 16:38Lord God of my master Abraham, who has not left destitute, my
- 16:42master of his mercy and his truth.
- 16:45I being in the way, the Lord led me to the House of my master's
- 16:49brother. So what an amazing thought is
- 16:52that God is moving this whole scene. 28 And the damsel ran and
- 16:57told them of her mother's house, these things. 29 And Rebecca had
- 17:01a brother, and his name was Laban.
- 17:06And Laban ran unto the man, unto the well.
- 17:09So we see that this Laban is the spokesperson for the family, and
- 17:15he's going to come out, and he loves to strike a deal. 30 And
- 17:21it came to pass when he saw the earrings and the bracelets upon
- 17:26his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebecca, his
- 17:29sister saying, Thus spoke the man unto me, that he came to the
- 17:34man, and behold, he stood by the camels at the well. 31 And he
- 17:38said, Come in, you blessed of the Lord.
- 17:41Wherefore why do you stand outside?
- 17:44For I have prepared the house and room for the camels.
- 17:47So here this Laban, he is going to welcome Eleazar into the
- 17:55house, but he has his eyes on him because he sees the extreme
- 18:01wealth that he is carrying. 32 And the man came into the house
- 18:05and he ungirded his camels and he gave straw and provender for
- 18:09the camels and water to wash his feet and the men's feet that
- 18:12were with him. What an amazing scene here.
- 18:15Not only is Laban going to feed the camels and house them, but
- 18:20he's also having them wash their feet. 33 And there was set meat
- 18:25before him to eat, And he said, I will not eat until I have told
- 18:29of my errand. And he said, Speak on.
- 18:32So Eleazar says, this is wonderful, thank you for the
- 18:36food, but I must tell you my business. 34 And he said, I am
- 18:41Abraham's servant. 35 And the Lord has blessed my master
- 18:46greatly, and he has become great, and he has given him
- 18:50flocks and herds, and silver and gold men, servants,
- 18:54maidservants, camels, asses. 36 And Sarah, my master's wife,
- 18:59bore a son to my master when she was old, and unto him he has
- 19:03given him all that he has. 37 My master made me swear, saying,
- 19:08You shall not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the
- 19:11Canaanites in whose land I dwell. 38 But you shall go to my
- 19:16father's house, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my
- 19:19son. 39 And I will. And I said to my master, But
- 19:23what if the woman will not follow me?
- 19:2540 And he said to me, The Lord before whom I walk will send his
- 19:30Angel to you, and prosper your way, And you shall take a wife
- 19:34from my son in the kindred of my father's house. 41 Then shall
- 19:39you be clear from this my oath? When you come to my kindred, if
- 19:44they give not you one, you shall be clear from my oath. 42 And it
- 19:49came this day unto the well, and said, O Lord, God, my master
- 19:54Abraham, if now you do prosper my way, which I go.
- 19:58So here Eleazar is praying to God, and he's saying, Please
- 20:02Lord, make my journey prosperous, be favorable unto my
- 20:07master Abraham, and give Isaac a wife. 43 Behold, I stand by the
- 20:14well of water, and it shall come to pass that when the Virgin
- 20:17comes forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray you,
- 20:22a little water of your pitcher to drink. 44 And she say to me,
- 20:26both you drink, and I will also draw for your camels.
- 20:30Let the same be the woman whom the Lord has appointed out for
- 20:34my master son. So this was the test is that
- 20:38Eleazar told God that he would know that it was her if she not
- 20:43only gave him something to drink, but also offered without
- 20:47being prodded or provoked, but offered out of the goodness of
- 20:51her heart to get water for his camels. 45 And before I had done
- 20:58speaking in my heart, behold, Rebecca came forth with her
- 21:01pitcher on her shoulder. She went down to the well, drew
- 21:04water, and I said to her, Let me drink, I pray you. 46 And she
- 21:09made haste, let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said,
- 21:12Drink, and I will give your camel's drink also.
- 21:15So I drank, and she made the camel's drink also. 47 And I
- 21:19asked her and said, Whose daughter are you?
- 21:21And she said, The daughter of Beth, you El Nahor's son, who
- 21:25milk I bore unto him, and I put the earring upon her face, and
- 21:29the bracelets upon her hands. 48 And I bowed down my head and
- 21:34worshipped the Lord, and blessed the Lord God of my master
- 21:37Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my masters
- 21:41brothers, daughter unto his son. So here we can see that Eleazar
- 21:47is jubilant. He is so incredibly joyful that
- 21:52God has made his journey to be prosperous for his master and
- 21:58for Isaac his son. 49 And now, if you will deal kindly and
- 22:06truly with my master, tell me. But if not, tell me that I may
- 22:10turn to the right hand or to the left.
- 22:12He said, let's not beat around the Bush, let's not play games.
- 22:16Just tell me now, if you are going to allow her to come back
- 22:21with me to Abraham, to Mary, Isaac. 50 Then Laban and Beth,
- 22:31you will answered and said, The thing proceeds from the Lord, we
- 22:35cannot speak to you bad or good. They said It looks as if the
- 22:39Angel of the Lord has drove you exactly right here to this exact
- 22:44place, and that we can say nothing against God.
- 22:48We do not want to fight against God. 51 Behold, Rebecca is
- 22:54before you. Take her and go.
- 22:56Let her be your master's son's wife.
- 22:58As the Lord has spoken, so their hands are tied, and God is the
- 23:02one who is steering this entire event. 52 But it came to pass
- 23:11that when Abraham's servant heard their words, he worshipped
- 23:14the Lord, bowing himself to the earth.
- 23:16He hasn't even had a bite to eat.
- 23:19He comes in, he tells them the business, they say, yes, we will
- 23:22release her. And he immediately bows down and
- 23:25gives all honor, and do worship all adoration unto Yahweh
- 23:30everlasting, who is worthy of all of our affection and
- 23:34attention. 53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver,
- 23:42jewels of gold and clothing, and gave them to Rebecca.
- 23:46He also gave them to her brother and to her mother.
- 23:49Precious things. So Abraham and his wealth is
- 23:52being displayed as he's giving them all these gifts.
- 23:58There is no lack in the father's house.
- 24:00God has plenty to go around. 54 And they did eat, and they
- 24:04drank, he and the men that were with him, and they tarried all
- 24:08night, and they rose up in the morning.
- 24:10And he said, Send me away unto my master.
- 24:13So here Eleazar is eager to get back to Abraham. 55 And her
- 24:18brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few
- 24:22days for at least. 10 And after that she shall go.
- 24:27They're saying, let's not be in a big quick hurry.
- 24:30You just now got here. This whole thing is mind
- 24:35blowing, how God is working mightily in our midst and we're
- 24:40going to lose a daughter. Let her stay here for 10 days so
- 24:43that we can say goodbye to her properly. 55 And her brother and
- 24:48her mother said, let her abide for at least 10 days. 56 And he
- 24:52said to them, Do not hinder me, seeing the Lord has prospered my
- 24:58way, Send me a way that I may go to my master.
- 25:03This is the way that the world works.
- 25:05If they cannot get you to stay in the world and to completely
- 25:11rebel against the holy and good God, then they will cause you to
- 25:15tarry and to wait, and to wait for a more adventurous,
- 25:23prosperous time, a more expedient moment to give your
- 25:28life unto God. They say, why are you in such a
- 25:31rush? But let's see the heart of
- 25:34Eleazar. 57 They said, We will call the damsel in choir at her
- 25:40mouth. So they're saying, let's hear
- 25:41from her. 58 They called Rebecca, and they said to her,
- 25:47Will you go with this man? And she said I will go look, she
- 25:52doesn't even have to call the council.
- 25:54She doesn't even have to have any kind of session to try to
- 25:58figure all the details out. She has immediate obedience and
- 26:03that is what we are called into. Friends, do not drag your feet
- 26:06when it comes to the things of the Lord.
- 26:09When the Lord speaks, we go, She says, I will go. 59 And they
- 26:15sent away Rebecca, their sister, her nurse, and Abraham's
- 26:18servant, and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebecca, and they
- 26:22said, You are our sister. Be the mother of thousands and
- 26:26millions, and let your seed possess the gate of those who
- 26:30hate them. And that is exactly what has
- 26:33transpired and happened, and that is the reality of the world
- 26:37that we live in today. 61 Rebecca arose her damsels, and
- 26:44they rode upon the camels and followed the man.
- 26:46And the servant took Rebecca and went his way. 62 And Isaac came
- 26:51from the way of the well of La Ha Roy, for he dwelt in the
- 26:55South country. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at
- 27:00evening, and he lifted up his eyes, and he saw, and behold the
- 27:04camels were coming. 64 And Rebecca lifted up her eyes, and
- 27:08when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the Cam. 65 For she had said
- 27:14to the servant, What man is this that walks in the field to meet
- 27:18us? And the servant said, It is my
- 27:21master. Therefore she took a veil, and
- 27:23she covered herself. She has reverence, friends, she
- 27:27has modesty friends. This is beautiful in the sight
- 27:30of God. 66 And the servant told Isaac All the things that he had
- 27:36done will end on. 67 And Isaac brought her into his mother
- 27:40Sarah's tent and took Rebecca, and she became his wife and he
- 27:45loved her and Isaac was comforted after his mother's
- 27:49death. Look at this scene friends.
