- speaker-0: Mark Workman Show. We're just excited to be back with our Well Within regular regularly scheduled program of Well Within, where we're just really trying to encourage you to you know take take control of your own health and do your own research and begin to care about your own health rather than farming out to someone else to tell you what to do. You the the the pro the information we bring here is really stuff that we've learned just by making our own mistakes and a lot of times we're reading and studying and finding out we've been doing it all wrong for a long part of our life too, you know. So anything we bring is you know disregarded if you don't feel like that's right down your lane. But just know that a lot of things that we're coming up with and reading and studying, which you both know if anyone that knows Kathy or even me, we're we're we're constantly trying to understand some of these things because we want to be better ourselves and be well within ourselves. So welcome to the show. As we get started today, we're gonna spend just to tell you what we're talking about a little bit today, we're gonna just talk about how the medical establishment and marketing has influenced kind of how we make choices in our health. And and then we're gonna talk about just the the lifestyle things to create habits and routines that help you make decisions without even thinking. So It's it's something that's really makes a lot of sense to us is that that we turn this into not a set of rules or laws we have to follow, but it just it just comes out of us naturally as a habit and as a routine that we've developed because you know, we just want to live better. But it a lot of times if we can remove the thinking from our choices and let things become habits, it it's really the truth. I I think of my brother who w was a cigarette smoker, still is, but he he not even think One second about the next cigarette. It just happens, and he's not even really thinking about making a choice. It just becomes a routine that he's just accepted in his life. And I think there's a lot of things like that for all of us that just become natural automatic things that we don't even think about. So, anyway, we're gonna talk about those and and welcome back, Kathy, and and to the well within show. Let's start with how you've been and what you've been doing. speaker-1: I've been good. And to add on to what you just said, our our brain takes a lot of energy and power. And so it wants to do things as simply as possible. So that's why we do a lot of things automatic automatically. Automaticity is what they call it. Like you just do things because your brain doesn't want to have to you fire up and use the power to do it. So it's our job to kind of evaluate some of those habits that we're doing automatically and then rethinking it. That's why the Bible says, Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. We gotta be thinking what we're thinking about because we get what we focus on. So that's speaker-0: Well, let's do our basics. Let's start off with the show and we'll start off with the problem and you work through that. And we're gonna come back to the problem in a different way today and talk about how the culture, and medical establishment, marketing of food and how it's influencing our ability to make choices. And do we really have a choice at this point because of the strength of the propaganda coming to us? It's really powerful. And if you're not literally taking a stand against it, you're probably Going right along down the line. Sure. So anyway, so let's start with the problem and we'll we'll we'll go from there. speaker-1: All right, let's talk about the problem. We got the little spinny wheel. I call it the wheel of torture or the wheel of fortune if you happen to be into the pharmaceuticals. but on there you're gonna see we have obesity, childhood obesity, we have h heart issues, stroke, neuropathy, skin issues, memory issues. PCOS, erectile dysfunction, all of those center around that middle core. And you can see that middle core is insulin resistance. And we've made insulin resistant, a lot of people go, I'm insulin resistant, like that's a bad thing. But when you understand that when your cells are overfueled and they're full and they're stuffed, they close up and they're not they're resistant, not because they're they're Deficit, there's a deficit, they're actually resistant trying to save you from you because you they don't want to blow up the cells. But the insulin's job is to get energy throughout the whole body. And when those cells become resistant because we have so much energy, it's like if you have your gas can going and you just keep flowing, it goes, it gets messy. It flows over. So it same thing happens when we're overfueling ourselves. And they're finding that we're eating 35%. More food than we did a generation ago. Yeah. So that overfueling requires insulin to put that extra energy somewhere. So a lot of times it's putting it in your liver. We're seeing a lot of people, I think it's one in four adults, have fatty liver. Children are actually being born with the fatty liver. and then if we can't, if the liver can't take it all, then it starts building your storage shed. So we're in this what we call damage mode and storage mode. And our bodies are designed to be metabolically flexible. So we can burn what we eat, but also burn what we store. But we never get to that place of eating the storage. And so the good news about all of these little things on the outside is well, if you go into the hospital, they're going to break you into body parts and they're going to give you a specialist. The specialist is trained and knows what to give you to manage your symptoms. They're never trying to heal you. That's not what they'll ever tell you. They're not going to say this is going to make it better. It's just going to make it manageable. And most of them are not even trained to understand that insulin is the root cause. So 93% of the population is metabolically unhealthy, which means we have a number of these things on the wheel. There could be could be signs, could be belly fat, skin tags, sleep apnea, high LDLs. low energy crashes, skin issues, all of those things are tied to insulin resistance. So speaker-0: Ninety three out of a hundred people are not using the food energy they eat on a daily basis properly. speaker-1: Correct. And when they do that consistently for long periods of time, these little things that are you see on the wheel start popping out. And then what we're doing is we're chasing our tail, because we're chasing the symptoms of those. We're not chasing the root. And that's what really excites me about the solution. speaker-0: Yeah. Okay, so let's talk about the solution. speaker-1: So a solution that I found, and you know what, there might be other things out there, but I've done enough research on this one, and there has been a lot of scientific studies done. It is a natural nutraceutical. So when you have natural products that are made that are designed to do medicinal things, they've put all these different natural ingredients together to make it medicinal. So it's a nutraceutical and it's actually in the physician's desk reference. So We know that it's available there, but because of the megaphone and the money and the pharmaceuticals get the those are what peop the physicians are trained in and that's what they're giving. So speaker-0: Can I anecdotally just jump in there? I I had a I was in a discussion this morning. I got an order from my oil fill business for some product to go to the rigs and stuff. And I was talking to the guy, he says, I'm sorry, I've been out for two weeks. And I said, What's going on? He goes, I ended up having stomach surgery. So, I won't mention names or anything, but he goes on to tell me about how he he's super healthy. He's like built like a rock. He's not fat, he's not not got any of that stuff. But he had acid reflux, but it wasn't showing up as that acid reflux. He never had acid, but his esophagus at the bottom had been scarred and and tissued and he was having tons of gut pain, all kinds of stuff. He he anecdotally, this is this morning, tells me it took me four different doctors to get to the answer. The first three all wanted me to take a pill For acid reflux and what and and that wasn't the issue. The fourth one he went to set basically was telling him there's something else going on here than your diet. Look at how you're you know, he watches everything he eats, it works out, he's super built. And they found out that it was, you know, something else. And he says, and I used your line. It says you can always find out about a doctor if they're a dealer or a healer. And he loved that. He literally goes, That I'll never forget that the rest of my life. Yeah. So it's pretty important to assort you know You know, I told him, I encouraged him, I said, one of the biggest things you learned in all this is you gotta get in there and take care of your own health. If you just took the first doctor's suggestion, you'd be on a pill right now and still be having problems. Yep. speaker-1: And that's their solution. And no, no sh no, I'm not pointing any fingers towards the physicians. That's what they do. That's what they're trained in. So that's why we need to take back our power and understand some things. So if every time I went to took my car to the the dealer and they just kept doing the same thing over and over, well, here's maybe a better example. So I walk into the house and there's a there's water on the floor and I get a mop and I wipe it up. Okay. I come back and there's water on the floor again. So I mop it back up. So how many times am I going to do this before I start asking the question of why is there water on the floor? So they're never healing the leak. They're just keep giving you a mop. Here's a mop. Absolutely. Here's a mop. Here's a mop. But when you can look to the root of the problem and we can address the root, then we can find the leak and fix it. And that's the exciting part about this protocol is that it's actually going to the root. So again, insulin is the number one hormone of the body. I like to think of insulin as the electrician. It's the electrician's job to all of the energy that comes in. It has to get to the cells in the body. And if it's if it's if we get it kinked, let's just say it's kind of like our computer system gets clogged, you can't get energy to all the parts of the body. So now we have a kink in the hose. So we're not getting all the energy to the brain. We have brain fog, Alzheimer's. You're not getting energy to your feet. You have neuropathy. You're not getting energy to the end of your pole. You have ED, you're not getting, you know, all of this is just basically we have a kinked energy hose. So insulin's job is to figure out what to do with it. And these cells get full and they get tight. And that's the kink in the hose. So if we can address the insulin and get that insulin balanced out, the insulin, then your the rest of your body can start healing. Now, when our energy is high, too much fuel, your pancreas has to work super hard because it's making more and more insulin. And that to me is looking at how amazing our bodies are made. We're designed to be in homeostasis. So when we're not, something's out of balance, then something else is adjusting. So when we have so much fuel, like we do all the time, your pancreas is going to automatically adjust and make more insulin. Okay. Because we're thinking, More insulin's gonna be able to clear that out and get it to different parts of the body. So we can be running on high insulin for 10 to 15 years before it actually even shows up on a blood panel because your high insulin is your norm. It becomes normal. But when your insulin is high, it's a growth hormone. It's like a flamethrower. It's it's growing things. So the inside of your blood vessels get thick. We have high blood pressure. Then your cholesterol gets off because we got all this excess sugar in the blood. So your triglycerides are high. So the whole thing just gets wonky. And when we can get that number one hormone, insulin, under control, get it balanced out. All the other little hormones, all those other things start balancing out and we got power throughout the whole house. The solution would be we've got to back off on our fuel. We are eating, they said the average person is eating eleven times a day. So every time you eat, you're spiking that blood sugar. So these little packets are the solution that I have found. And it's two teas a day and these t teas are just going to lower They they actually boost your natural GLP one. And that's kind of what drew me to it because I've been in the weight loss industry for years. And I know we're we've been set up for failure and we're desperate. And when I start seeing everybody turning to the automatic shot without thinking about the consequences, I get it. I understand it. But when I found out there's a natural solution that doesn't have all the side effects, I thought, I gotta be a part of this. And I'm watching it with my own friends and family, being able to manage their weight, getting the weight down, the inflammation out of the body, the food noise is gone. Now I can go through times where I'm not eating and my body can actually tap into the storage and start burning all that. Cause when the insulin is low, fat can go. But we actually have to train our bodies to start to be able to eat from the storage pantry. And so in that happens when you're fasting, when you stop overfueling. speaker-0: So these are included with the protocol of intermittent fasting. Talk about that. speaker-1: Yep. We like to add it to the intermittent fasting. And I know that creates anxiety for a lot of people thinking not eating. I know for me personally, I was like, I'm not giving up my breakfast. and you don't have to give it up. But as you start taking the protocol, I tell people, first week, do nothing but get in the habit of your unicity simplicity. Get your three packets because these two teas are going to keep you from being hungry. So now maybe I was be done at six o'clock at night. I go to bed, I wake up at six o'clock in the morning. That's a 12 hour fast. Okay. And now I'm really not that hungry because I'm going to wake up in the morning. I'm going to start my little tea. I'm not hungry. The food noise is gone. Now all of a sudden it's one o'clock and I'm like, I'm going to have some lunch. So it helps you do the things you know you want to do, takes away the food noise so you're not constantly craving things, levels out those blood sugar levels. This has a chlorogenic acid in it. Google it, look it up. Chlorogenic acid actually softens the cells, helps them open up. And then you can start getting energy throughout the whole body again. Another one that, as the unsung hero that we've talked about in our last podcast, was fiber. Fiber is so huge. When the food companies started processing these simple, handy foods, they took the fiber out. And they knowing if you take the fiber out, you're not gonna get full as fast. And so you're gonna overeat. So we've been programmed that automaticity to overeat. And by adding the fiber back in, we're feeding the gut biome. And what's happened over the last years of since food industries and in the 90s really started demonizing fat, when you take the fat out, you add more sugar. So now we're spiking even more. We're really a bunch of sugar addicts by design. So to be able to get that under control, this little tea is going to help you do that. And then before your largest meal, this balance is adding the fiber. To know I'm feeling fuller longer, but it's actually healing the gut. Most of us have gut issues because constipation, IBS, anxiety and depression is actually starts in the gut. We're seeing so much of that with our younger kids because they're, you know, waking up and having a coke, having the power, energy drinks, eating junk, having a bowl of cereal, it all spikes your blood sugar. So when we do that, This is going to keep your blood sugar down because fiber is what keeps your blood sugar from spiking. When they take that out, it spikes higher, creates more cra cravings. And I think we're going to talk about that in a little bit, the marketing piece of that. But this little fiber, and I actually do two a day. if you're eating high carb meals, have this before your high carb meal. If you're not eating high carb meals, have it any time a day because you're just feeding the gut. And it's not just fiber, like metamucle is one psyllium husk. Great stuff. But we need to feed all the different gut biome. And I like to use the example of your gut is like a zoo. And if I only give my zoo bananas, the monkeys are happy happy, but the lions die or the lions eat the monkeys. Yeah. so we've got to get that variety of soluble and insoluble fibers in there. speaker-0: Yeah, that that that's really good. And those are the basics. We we try to do that every show simply because it's the foundation for what we're trying to talk about in this show. But today we also want to get into a discussion about the idea of we all know that we're being propagandized like endlessly about every subject possible. And one of the biggest ones is food. The marketing that goes on around our commercials, like you can't even watch a program without three or four pharmaceutical commercials in between every brain. Plus a food, and it's all processed, it's easy to get, it's it's very convenient, it's made for you, it's it's farming out our diet to a third-party company, marketing, and and we're gonna Emma ask a question here in a little bit about what the role of food companies are, and it might be interesting to see what our response is. But the truth of it is, is all of this is related to the idea of the messages we get from birth almost. We got to go to a pediatrician, we gotta be constantly being seen by a doctor, you know. Those messages that starts early on, you know, and we're told to trust the science, which in many ways science is awesome. There's nothing wrong with trusting some of the basics in science, but we've also got to take responsibility for our own lives and step into the role of being our own best advocate. That that's absolutely the fact. And if you're not doing that and you're just trusting a third party, you don't know their motives, you don't know what's going on. And a lot of these companies marketing food to us today, Really probably don't have the right motive for you. They're really about the bottom line of did we increase a profit margin for our shareholders? Really, that really kind of comes down to for the food guys. And there's no doubt that that's the case. For most industries, they've got to do that. But at the same time, we have to awaken to the idea of being aware of what we're thinking about. Like Kathy mentioned earlier, you know, we don't even think about what we're thinking about. We're just automatically, you know, taking that bowl of chips that are Desk as we work and just all day long. Next thing you know, you ate the whole bag. You don't even know you did it. And I think there's a lot of examples like that where we're automatically just doing the easy thing when really we need to think about really what's best for us: lifestyle, exercise, sleep, nutrition, you know, being able to reset and have some quiet time, you know, whatever you need for your overall health, we have to start thinking about adding those things back in a really Much more intentional way, and and realizing that in that intention we're going to create routines, and those routines are gonna create habits. And what is a habit? A habit is an automatic response in every situation with the same behavior. I believe people have habits of being rude. I think people have habits of being initially negative. I think people have habits of humor to cover for maybe insecurities. There's all kinds of habits we form in our lives, we don't even know we're doing. Them, but a lot of times they're protections or or ways that help us get through life and through the day. And what happens with our food is I think we're doing the same thing. We create habits, an automatic response in every situation to eat ice cream when I'm stressed. You know, you don't even realize you're doing it, that you get a scoop or two or half a gallon, whatever you're doing. And a lot of times those are habits, and so we have to rethink and and think about what we're forming as habits, and I believe we can. Retrain ourselves. I believe it in all my heart, even at my age, 50, 60, whatever, I can retrain myself in certain areas that are detrimental to me to improve my life. I did I have no doubt that that is the case. So it's the same thing here. When we're getting constant messaging all the time on what is healthy, it can get very confusing. So you need to dig in and and actually begin to learn on your own. Kathy, as here's one of my first questions to you: How has food marketing shaped the idea of what is called healthy. speaker-1: Well, I think the marketing, you know, they use those words healthy. And the more when you look at a label, the more they're trying to convince you it's healthy, you better flip it over and see what's in it. Because the food companies are also owned by the pharmaceutical companies and then they have people on the legislation. So they're legislating and they have usually like they're trying to get rid of grains or they're trying to get rid of, you know, some kind of byproduct. So they add it and then we eat it and we're marketed to that. Because they know that automaticity, your brain wants to do things as simple as possible. So if we have you thinking this is healthy granola bar, then we're thinking, right on and let's have some more. Right. speaker-0: And then so when you think about the increased availability of processed foods and comfort foods, convenience foods, you know, what has been the outcome of that in the last 30, 40 years because of the processing where where we used to grow things and have vegetables and you know, we went to the local meat shop back when I grew up, we would go to Dumas Meats and get our meat and you know, all that's changed where even we don't even know what meat we're getting in the store anymore. Exactly. speaker-1: Chicken breast the other day that was bigger than my own breast. I was like, my gosh, that must be some auto shape, some weird shaped chicken. speaker-0: You know they're injecting with water and everything to make bigger and all that kind of stuff. So they're processing everything, even the stuff that we maybe consider kind of naturally grown, there's being there's things being done. So in the when you think of the rise of convenience or comfort or processed foods, what has been the outcome in our culture for health? It's obvious it's the easy one to answer, but it's really been poor. speaker-1: Well, that's that's the that's the advantage that we have that our parents didn't have. My parents believed all of the all of the health things. They believed that food pyramid, they were eating the grains, they cut out the fats. And when we believed those things, now we've watched our loved ones be treated to death with because they they were living out the s the symptoms. So Even if you don't have a science background and all that, you can just look like 93% of the population is metabolically unhealthy. As a country, we spend trillions of dollars on health care. We're not getting healthier. We're getting sicker and sicker. So we need to stop and ask questions. And that's really where this came for me as I was in this weight loss industry, you know, focusing on the weight, less food, less you. and then when you open up the hood and understand how the body works, and yes, it's It's complicated and it feels like it's a lot, but you can break it down to a junior high level so we can at least understand what's going on, which empowers us. I like to say, if you can name the game, then you could have a choice with whether you want to play it. But what happens with automaticity is we're playing a game. We don't even know we're playing the game, but marketers do. The marketing company knows exactly what to do to hit that pleasure point, mixing fat and sweet, just the right amount that's going to keep you coming back. Over and over and over. speaker-0: And I think it's even more than the taste of food or that or or the you know that you th you think about a certain food you might crave. It's also in the advertising, they're playing to our emotional side. absolutely. They're playing to our convenience side. Comfort. And and actually they play to family values. Like it'll give you more time with your family. This is easier. We'll we'll do the hard work for you. You can just put this on the table and call it a night. You know, you know, you know, KFC used to always market You get this bucket of chicken with the biscuits and this and that and all that. You can have it in four minutes and set out and have this amazing meal for your family, no work for you. And we're gonna sit around the table and just have a good old time, right? Right. So they're marketing family values, emotional. You've done some reading on emotional triggers, right? On eating. Is that right? Yeah. The way to say it. Yeah. But they're using every tool in the toolbox to transform the way you see food and health, right? speaker-1: Yeah. And until you see that we are the product, they're they're marketing to us, we are their product, because we're the w they're making money on us over consuming. They're making money on us being unhealthy. They're making money on us. And you know, you can call me a conspiracy theorist or whatever, but when you stop to look at your own life, like we are a compilation of our own habits. And Like I mentioned earlier, our brain wants to do things as simply as possible. So if I have a bad day at work and I'm like driving by Wendy's and I'm like, yeah, I'm gonna get me one of those little frosties. I take that first scoop, that sugar goes boom, right to my brain. I have a dopamine. My brain goes, yeah, I'm gonna put this in the little Rolodex. So next time she's stressed, this is what's coming to mind. And so we're actually being and then All we need is a thought and we roll on it. If you're not taking every thought captive and evaluating that thought and go, well, no, that's not really what I want today. Like I said, we're we're in this game that we don't even know we're in. So until you can name the game, then you don't have a choice to whether you want to play it. So that's why thinking is so important to like, wait a minute, this isn't working out for me. I need to change that. speaker-0: Yeah, some some people might listen to the show and think we're being super negative towards food companies and marketing. And in and in some ways we are b but i in other ways we're not because I have a question here. What is the responsibility for corporate food companies have of for public health? What would be I know my answer, what would be your answer? Yeah. speaker-1: There's zero responsibility. Zero. speaker-0: I mean we can't blame them for our choices. They're setting a table before us, right? Right. And we have the ability to not choose that table that they're setting before us. What what responsibility do they have? As a corporate organization, literally in the law, they have a they have a responsibility to their shareholders and to produce a profit. So they're gonna put a product out there that produces the highest profit. And it happens to be the convenience processed comfort foods that produce the most income. So how are they going to market, right? It's so and we cannot blame them one bit. That's exactly what they should be doing. And what is our responsibility? It's our responsibility. You know, and and in this show, we want to encourage that that you take responsibility for your own life and stop farming it out to someone else. speaker-1: Well, and it can feel overwhelming. I know when we started o waking up to some of this stuff and we go down and we look at our pantry of all the processed stuff that was down there, it's like, my gosh, what do you eat? And I've had people ask me that, what do you eat? And I would have to tell you it's gotten a lot simpler. But you know, you're eating whole foods. You're eating chicken, beef, pork, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, more vegetables than fruits. So, you know, yogurts, cheeses, healthy fats, nuts, all of those things, it it it simplifies it really. But it is a gradual, I would encourage you, don't get overwhelmed. You know, I've read books and it's just like they go so extreme. and that's where it like where I'm eating today, if you'd have told me probably even five years ago how I'd be eating, it would have felt overwhelming to me. But when you take little steps in the right direction. Your brain does want to help you get better too. And as you start feeling better and making those connections, it's easy it gets easier. speaker-0: And that's a good segue to to our kind of our final subject for the show, but and and I wanna add to that in the idea is that we've treated our health care and the way we take care of ourselves as a reaction. my foot hurts. I'm gonna go to the doctor. I am having stomach pain. I must go whatever. Instead of we're doing reaction healthcare rather than preventative. We're not thinking about the day-to-day small choices. You may just mention it, the small choices that we can make each and every day to that transform our lives. It's not as this massive change that we need to think about. But I think we've turned into I'm gonna eat the typical American diet, and when something goes bad, I'm gonna react. To it and go get it fixed. Right. It's like you get a flat tire, I'm gonna go get my tire fixed. Right. But really, if you're doing preventative care, you wouldn't get a flat, most likely. You know, you were had kept your tires up or whatever, you know, whatever the maintenance is. So I think we've turned you know a lot of our choices and our health care into reactions rather than thinking about on a daily basis the small choices we can make, the food choices we make, get just get the proper sleep, you know, the things we've already mentioned. So we got to move from that way of thinking, being a reaction. person to healthcare to a preventative, right? speaker-1: Well, and we do it with our houses, we do it with our cars, we do it with those things. You'd get the roof put on, you get the siding, you know, you take care of your car. But when it comes to us, there's some mentality there that we don't want to invest in us. And this is the house and the car, the transportation that I have for the rest of my life, 247. and and we've again been programmed to think that if you're taking care of you, you're being selfish, you know. 'Cause we're so programmed to take care of everybody else, take care of everybody else, make everybody else happy, but not recognizing, you know, w our own health is is very important. And when you take care of that, then somebody else doesn't have to take care of you. And that to me is speaker-0: Yeah, and anecdotally, you you were mentioning this morning an a a a a person that will buy the the sweet teas for lunch 'cause they just love but this is too expensive for them at five dollars a day. Right. And I guarantee ya those that brand of tea that that you mentioned, if they're buying two or three of those a day, it was about eight bucks. speaker-1: Into the gas station the other day to buy an extra bottle of water. And I was really honestly quite shocked at the rows and rows and rows and rows and rows of drink options. And I would say very few, if any of them, were under three dollars and sixty-nine cents. You know, the power drinks, they're even more than that. So when you can get these little packets for a buck 74 and keep from having to buy those, they're also saving you money. We say this is cost neutral. Because if you're not having breakfast, you're not having all the other snacks, we've gotten rid of the extra drinks we're having, we're actually saving money and feeling good. Got great energy, sleeping good, not hearing the food noise. We're able to make the good choices that we want to make. Our guts are working properly, our brains are working properly. That's priceless. speaker-0: Well, y you mentioned we've mentioned a couple of times already that about the small choices you have to make, you know, just just small changes, a lot of times we don't it's not this big drastic, you know, you know thing we gotta do to get through this process to change our thinking and create a routine. But what would be some of the simple swaps, you know, w you know, water for soda or you know, whatever that's a simple swap, right? Right. what would be some of your suggestions for simple swaps that We don't even think about we've been learning a lot about like some of our we made Alfredo out of like cottage cheese, eggs and olive oil or something. Whatever you did. And then you made you've made some casseroles lately that were had some alternative swaps in and they were amazing. Yeah. Were they not? speaker-1: So if you love pasta, spaghetti squash is great. And Mark used to go, I don't want no squash. And now it's like, this is one of my favorite meals. So there is a mind switch too. You gotta be ready to make some changes. And I know some people that sneak it in on their families, which is which is great. I make my own spaghetti sauce. I'll just put my leftover tomatoes in the freezer, extra peppers, any other vegetables I have, and then I'll take a day where I'll boil it up, put some chicken stock in there. some of the different spices and things I have in my garden or in my cupboard, use the hand emulser and I've got, you know, my own tomato sauce. So added all the extra vegetables in there that so there's ways to hide it. Some of the other easy swaps, I think, for us was bread. We swapped for the low or no carb tortillas. I mean, a tortilla is 25 carbs. So if I get the ones that have 20 carbs and 18 fiber, I'm only getting two net carbs. So understanding how carbs and sugar are the same thing and how they impact our blood sugar. What I'm really running into is a lot of people think they're not eating any sugar. I'm having oatmeal for breakfast. Well, oatmeal and the grains all convert to sugar. So they're still spiking your blood sugar. Then we add some cranberries because fruit's good for us, right? Well, they they're concentrated because they've taken the you know, they've taken the the fluid out and it's concentrated sugar. So it's spiking our blood sugar. Then we have a glass of orange juice. So now we just ate 10 oranges without any of the fiber in them. And without the fiber, that blood sugar just spikes. And we think we're not eating sugar. So understanding where that's at, we've been programmed to look at calories when we really need to be able be looking at the the contents of your your macros, your fats, your carbs, and your proteins. speaker-0: It always shocks you and I when we're we're when we we'll have and you you're the one who pushes it and has conversations with anybody within earshot about this. You never quit, which is good. But at the same time, it's so interesting when people when you're to I can hear you talking or I'm there with you and the somebody'll say, So are are blueberry pancakes okay? After you've just given them the entire spiel about carbs, sugar, processed foods, they literally so blueberry pancakes are okay? Or how about if I have you know you're just like speaker-1: No, we have it's there's a there's a total disconnect that we really need to start, yeah, thinking about again and understanding. And I think again, some of that's the marketing that's been marketed to us, you know, the hundred calorie snacks. But you flip it over and it's 30 grams of carbs, which means you're gonna need another one of those little snacks in about an hour, two hours, you're gonna have a crash because your blood sugar is gonna go up. And when it comes down, we have this energy crash. So that's what's got us eating. I told you at the beginning of the show. eleven times a day, whether it's just a handful of snacks here, a handful of snacks there, our food environment matters, what's available to us matters, and because we'll just do it mindlessly because of that automaticity. speaker-0: Yeah. You know, and we're talking about creating a lifestyle here. Hab you know, and and I've mentioned about habits already. A habit starts with a thought, then it goes to then that thought will eventually become a belief, and that belief will begin to form our behaviors physically, come out be manifest in our bodies because I have a thought, it comes in action. And then over time and through routine it'll become a habit, an automatic choice in every situation to choose the right meal. Right. You don't even think speaker-1: The sugars out of your system, you don't have the cravings, but it truly is an addiction. It's no different than alcohol. We can all point at the alcoholic and like, why would he do that? Yeah. but when we're destroying our own bodies with the food we're eating, if you've if you've gained over fifty pounds, you are in an addictive, destructive mode. You're destroying your body, you know you're destroying it, and you keep doing it. That's an act that's an addiction. speaker-0: Right. So we have the situation where I I share with you all the time that we need to always be encouraging people on this show with well within to move to a situation through routines and making the right choice, thinking, make a belief, form a habit, you know, and when the habit is automatically I'm gonna choose the apple. Automatically I'm gonna transfer my life from this old lifestyle to the new one for my health. And if it's done out of habit and out of natural lifestyle changes that have occurred with us, we stop thinking. About it. Right. And I think what happens in the healthcare, especially influencers or whatever you see, because I'm bombarded because I'm interested in this subject with you know on my feed. You probably speaker-1: I am too. speaker-0: it's just never ending, right? Right. And I think they throw, well, it's point this and point two four of this and get this many of that, and this all the science, boom, boom, boom, boom. And I think we what we've done is we've taken the conversation into the science mode, trust the science, and and we're We're not really getting to the lifestyle change maybe never, right? You know, because I now I'm following a set of rules. I only have this much carbs, I only have this much protein, I have you know all the science. And I really believe we need to do it backwards. Start having people think about the lifestyle and and teach them some things, no doubt teach them some science. Yeah. But if you can get them, move it to where it's a habit and routines are huge for me. Like I do not like I you know this. Like, Thursday night, we're going out. And I'll be a little perturbed because that's messing up my game, my routine, because I like being on a routine. And it's not even about who I'm going to dinner with or anything. It's just it's messing up my routine. Right. You know? Yeah. speaker-1: You'd asked about some swaps, you know, and it it does get overwhelming. But even with our grandkids, we make protein pancakes. So, like you mentioned with the cottage cheese, the egg, there are a lot of really great resources out there. you know, for the ketogenic diet, carnivore, whatever you want to choose, for your own body. It's more about getting good nutrition in. And that's gonna come through whole foods that God made. And But finding what you like and making the swaps. Like I said, the spaghetti, spaghetti squash. We don't have bread in our house anymore. We'll have BLT sandwich on a taco shell, and it's amazing. We'll have make pizza with that low-carb taco shell. so there are lots of little swaps, and just start reading your labels and understanding how to see what's in there. And we always like to encourage lead with protein and fiber. Have your carbohydrate at the end of your meal if you want to, because that fiber that you had is going to keep that blood sugar from spiking. You'll feel fuller longer. You'll be satisfied and you won't have the cravings and the crashes. speaker-0: Yeah, and and another subject we can talk about is the idea of creating sustainable changes rather than quick fixes, where I have written down here consistency is more important than perfection. Yeah. So you know and people can beat themselves up and we've heard it, like the shame of I cheated, right? Whatever. And and I'm certainly not letting that off the hook in the sense of, you know, if someone's cheating all the time, then they're not really trying. Right. But at the same time I think we we consistency over perfection is really important to have in your brain because you realize you didn't get here overnight. Right. You got here over three or four decades. speaker-1: Well, and even in the weight loss industry, nobody ever lost weight as fast as they wanted to. And I would say, Okay, if I could have this magic wand and wave it over you and you lost your weight, you're gonna come right back because you didn't change any of your mindsets because it's the mindsets and how we're thinking that create the patterns that you're talking about. the other thing is, you're gonna be so mad at me. And I'm like You know, and I hear people say, I want to make my doctor happy. my doctor's not happy with me. I'm like, well, your doctor doesn't live in your body. that thinking that we're gonna manipulate something to make somebody else happy when we really have to t touch in with how am I feeling about, like you said, your lifestyle. So, you know, I'll bring it back to Did you get some activity this week? Yeah, I got my exercise in. I don't understand one of the scales and go, did you get your water in? Yeah, I got my water in. How about your sleep? Yeah, it did really good on there. Well, then it'll come. Because your body will respond to that. But we're focus so focused on the scale and the numbers a lot of times that we don't realize, I don't have a CPAP machine anymore. That's a that's huge. I can get my pants on. They don't hurt anymore. That's that's big. That's your body making changes. And so just being able to back up and look at some other, you know, other things. speaker-0: Well, I can definitely beat myself up a little bit on you know, and I just to be truthful and vulnerable is that I've I've I've lost I lost like si sixty, seventy pounds and I've gained about fifteen of that back and it's been frustrating because I've been very routine and you know this, you've you follow what I'm doing. And so I'm a little confused in what I'm doing wrong, right? Right. So I I'm always evaluating w when I'm eating, how I'm eating, that kind of thing. Yeah. And and and and I still say to this, because I think it's the emphasis of today's show is is I need to make my healthy choices my default choices. It's where I go. It's the lat it's my default. It's the automatic thing that I do. And when if I'm there, I'm probably in a really good spot. Yeah. You know what I mean? And so I I it helps me to remove the guilt or shame of, golly, I'm what am I gain weight? I understand. You know, I've I've done really well here or there. But when I realize that I am making the right choices, right and and those have become my default. I'm not I'm I'm just not out there living this other lifestyle. it then I'm fine. speaker-1: Yeah, I think too often, again, it's part of the programming. We get programming looking for the problem instead of focusing on, I got this great lifestyle. I feel good. I don't have inflammation. I'm getting to the gym consistently. I'm getting my water. Yes, I've got this weight. I'm not sure why it's not going, but trusting that even in these, this is really helping. You know, we've done we did forty years of damage not knowing it. So it's not gonna undo overnight. But in the last decade for us, as we've learned and grown or shrunk or however you want to do it, it's a process. And that's where I think too instantly we want to take that microwave pill, instantaneous thing. And it's not. It's then being able to shift your mind to I like how I'm living. I'm focusing on health. I'm not focusing on the fear of being sick or whatever. I'm doing the things I need to do to the best of my ability to feel great and Enjoy my life. So speaker-0: So so as we can c conclude the show, what would be maybe some of your key takeaways from the idea of marketing and a medical establishment propagandizing us? Yep. And really changing our thinking and really influencing our choices, I think. and then relate that to our idea of creating a lifestyle of the default choice for me and my food and everything is going to be a healthy choice. Right. What's the balance there? I guess. What's a key takeaway from speaker-1: I guess the key takeaway is I think I hear people go, I did really bad. I was bad. I, you know, we've we've made things good or bad. And that's where I I love this protocol because it helps you do what you want to do. I had one of my friends say, Kathy, you know me, I don't want to give anything up. I said, just get consistent with the protocol. And she's like, my goodness, it helped me want to. I want to do better. And then when you see the results and feeling the results, when you can connect those dots, I want more of that. I you know, so good health snowballs and bad health snowballs. So, if you need a tool to help you get out of it, do you need these packets? No. But let me tell you, they've been super helpful. They're a great nutraceutical and supplement that's helping me do what I want to do. I feel good. I wanna probably be on them for life. just because I know they're feeling, I always say it's like a Fertilizer for the root system. It's fixing things before they're broke. And that's what I wanna do. I wanna invest in my maintenance. I don't wanna be, you know, you invest in your wellness or you invest in your illness. Either way, you're gonna spend your time and money taking care of you. speaker-0: That's a great way to say what we were talking about earlier, rather than being reacting to your a health concern work on preventing it ever happening. Right. Right. Yeah. That'd be a key takeaway. Yeah, probably. There you go. So anyway, thanks for coming to the show today. We're just we just love this and and the good great discussion to get Kathy really good. enjoyed the heck out of this and enjoyed doing this. I hope it encouraged you. I hope it helps you think about some things in your own life, bring maybe you know get you to do some research and thinking about your own health and being your own best advocate. Again, thanks for coming to the show. We're just always grateful. And please like and subscribe It helps the show. and we just enjoy doing these. We'll see you next Thursday.
