- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Dan from a Sound Affliction.
- 0:02Speaker 2: New album debut album, Behind the Walls, is coming out
- 0:06Speaker 2: Friday thirteenth on ext Music.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Looking forward to.
- 0:09Speaker 3: It, fantastic brother, Thanks for joining us today. Yeah, so
- 0:12Speaker 3: Sound of Fiction to release your debut album, Behind the
- 0:15Speaker 3: Walls today on that air, Brother, So, how are you
- 0:17Speaker 3: feeling about it?
- 0:19Speaker 2: Look, we're really excited. It's been a long time coming.
- 0:24Speaker 2: We were, you know, we're happy with with the final
- 0:27Speaker 2: products and things. There's some really good stuff on there,
- 0:29Speaker 2: and yeah, hopefully everyone enjoys it. That's the main thing
- 0:33Speaker 2: is getting it out. It's always exciting to get some
- 0:35Speaker 2: new stuff out there.
- 0:36Speaker 3: It is, and you're obviously not superstitious at all bringing
- 0:38Speaker 3: it out on Friday Thurday.
- 0:40Speaker 2: No, I think, well we'll manage all right on that one.
- 0:43Speaker 2: You know though it could be good luck, who knows.
- 0:47Speaker 3: So can you dive into the album a bit deeper
- 0:49Speaker 3: for us from a musical perspective and tell us what
- 0:51Speaker 3: you were going for?
- 0:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the whole concept of the band has
- 0:56Speaker 2: always been, yeah, like modern heavy rock with some sort
- 1:04Speaker 2: of lighter parts and then this sort of emotional lyrics.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I guess you'd call it not necessarily singing all the time,
- 1:12Speaker 2: but you know, some heavy vocals and some light vocals,
- 1:14Speaker 2: but trying to tap into those sort of emotional things
- 1:18Speaker 2: deals with a lot of, right if sort of modern
- 1:23Speaker 2: I guess, issues we're facing society, whether it be the
- 1:27Speaker 2: depression and sobriety and addiction, and there's lots of things
- 1:30Speaker 2: like that. There's some deep, deep parts in the lyrics
- 1:33Speaker 2: that Matt's written, So yeah, sort of threw it all
- 1:38Speaker 2: into the pot and this is what.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Came out to you.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Guys have released the singles Leave the Light On, Sober,
- 1:44Speaker 3: Getting Me, and today you're releasing Fly. So are they
- 1:47Speaker 3: good sunny representation of the album overall or they just
- 1:50Speaker 3: discratching the surface?
- 1:55Speaker 4: I think all I think all the songs kind of
- 1:58Speaker 4: they overly lyrically, they all relate together and really delve
- 2:07Speaker 4: into depressions, dealing living with depression, living with addiction, and
- 2:22Speaker 4: how to get past addiction and try and still find yourself.
- 2:28Speaker 4: And yeah, on some level they're all anti establishment, but yeah,
- 2:37Speaker 4: I guess, And and the title is it's kind of
- 2:39Speaker 4: fitting because it's behind the walls. It's sort of like
- 2:43Speaker 4: really a matter of reflecting on all these things and
- 2:50Speaker 4: and living through them.
- 2:51Speaker 3: So So with those subject matters, would you say, I
- 2:55Speaker 3: rolled it's an album of hope or an album of despair?
- 2:59Speaker 1: Well, it's probably got a bit of both, I reckon.
- 3:02Speaker 4: I think that's got a lot of despair in there.
- 3:07Speaker 4: But also, you know, like songs like Fly, it talks
- 3:11Speaker 4: about just yea depression can be like quicksand you're stuck
- 3:15Speaker 4: in it, yeah, and and you've it's up to the
- 3:20Speaker 4: strength in your within yourself to to push through and
- 3:24Speaker 4: rise above it.
- 3:27Speaker 1: So I guess there's there's there's elements of both.
- 3:29Speaker 4: There's elements of despair and and hope and perseverance.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Is I guess the message.
- 3:40Speaker 3: And I want to go a little bit deeper down
- 3:42Speaker 3: there through though, bro, because I say lyrically, the songs
- 3:45Speaker 3: all tackle real life issues such as depression and anxiety,
- 3:48Speaker 3: ad digtion and mental health.
- 3:49Speaker 5: But they're all really heavy subjects.
- 3:51Speaker 3: So when you play those songs live like, did you
- 3:53Speaker 3: feel that that weight or that heaviness when you plan
- 3:56Speaker 3: them live like?
- 3:57Speaker 5: Does it make it a bit right?
- 3:59Speaker 4: For it's for me, it's a matter of reflection. So
- 4:03Speaker 4: singing about it, it's a way of getting it off
- 4:06Speaker 4: your chest and releasing it, you know, getting it out.
- 4:12Speaker 4: So I guess we're not going to be on the
- 4:15Speaker 4: next pop charts or anything like that.
- 4:19Speaker 1: But yeah, it's for me.
- 4:22Speaker 4: It's about getting getting it off my chest and letting
- 4:25Speaker 4: it out. And definitely when I wrote the songs, that's
- 4:29Speaker 4: that's what I was doing.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Yeah, how about for you guys, right, like you guys
- 4:34Speaker 3: have to feel the way, like not just the vocals
- 4:37Speaker 3: the out of the front, but the band itself.
- 4:39Speaker 5: You'd have to sort of like sat it up to
- 4:40Speaker 5: way heavy on you sometimes.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Yeah, look, it definitely does it.
- 4:48Speaker 2: We're all kind of I've been open about the songs
- 4:52Speaker 2: as we've written them, so we all know the backgrounds
- 4:55Speaker 2: and where they sort of come from, which is a
- 4:57Speaker 2: real place. And yeah, because those songs do have quite
- 5:01Speaker 2: a lot of light and shade, you can really you know,
- 5:04Speaker 2: when you're playing in live you can you can feel
- 5:07Speaker 2: it definitely, and when it's all going full steam ahead
- 5:12Speaker 2: and everyone's going, well, it sounds good.
- 5:15Speaker 5: That's what you need exactly.
- 5:18Speaker 3: We mentioned earlier this is your debut album, guys, so
- 5:21Speaker 3: as a band approaching your first slab of music, like
- 5:24Speaker 3: what sorts of things you discussed, like, yeah, work towards
- 5:27Speaker 3: things he put out all your all your songs, you
- 5:30Speaker 3: say the best one.
- 5:31Speaker 5: So what's the sort of thought process?
- 5:33Speaker 1: Oh, good question.
- 5:35Speaker 2: This one's been a labor of love and hate. I
- 5:38Speaker 2: think in some ways it's take us a bit of
- 5:42Speaker 2: time to pull together.
- 5:44Speaker 1: We started with these songs, came.
- 5:46Speaker 2: About quite quickly actually when we wrote them, and we
- 5:49Speaker 2: kind of almost had the brilliant print for the album
- 5:51Speaker 2: quite quickly, but it just take took us a long
- 5:53Speaker 2: time to get to where we needed to with it.
- 5:57Speaker 1: So I think.
- 6:03Speaker 2: As far as the singles go, we thought that we
- 6:06Speaker 2: put out the songs that we thought initially we liked best,
- 6:09Speaker 2: and we started to get some feedback from other people
- 6:11Speaker 2: and took some advice from them on and they said, yeah,
- 6:14Speaker 2: that's a really good song for that.
- 6:16Speaker 1: And this is the thing.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Everyward's listens to things slightly differently, so it's good to
- 6:20Speaker 2: get some outside opinions sometimes go yeah, well that's actually
- 6:24Speaker 2: a fair point. And that's worked really well for us,
- 6:27Speaker 2: And certainly Tim's helped us ad ex music there to
- 6:30Speaker 2: sort of home what he thinks works better than other things.
- 6:37Speaker 2: And like I said, this is a debut album. It's
- 6:39Speaker 2: eleven there's ten songs plus one cover, which you'll appear
- 6:42Speaker 2: on the hard copy release only at this stage, but
- 6:47Speaker 2: they formed part of a set of probably about twenty
- 6:50Speaker 2: plus songs that we've written and hopefully, you know, we'll
- 6:52Speaker 2: push into that next album in the future.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Yeah. Nice. So it's sort of along those lines, and
- 6:57Speaker 5: I guess better than.
- 6:58Speaker 3: That, what sorts of things you learn about the band
- 7:01Speaker 3: and about yourselves in this whole process so far?
- 7:07Speaker 1: Patience.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Patience is a virtue, that's the statement.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I think. So, you know, we wanted to there's there's.
- 7:22Speaker 4: There's been times when Dan's wanted to rip our heads
- 7:24Speaker 4: off and vice versa, and we've just taken a calm
- 7:28Speaker 4: foot approach to things and just going well, listen, we're
- 7:32Speaker 4: all humans here, we're all we're all Batlan on one
- 7:37Speaker 4: one plane or another, and if we can get together,
- 7:40Speaker 4: when we get together and make great music, well so
- 7:42Speaker 4: be it.
- 7:44Speaker 1: That's it. Yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 5: Well, now you mentioned a cover that you've got on
- 7:48Speaker 5: the hard copy, which wasn't in my notes. Guys, so
- 7:52Speaker 5: you got on there.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Well you're in for a surprise, Chris, fill me in. Well,
- 7:59Speaker 4: we did a cover of Tears for Fears Everybody Wants
- 8:02Speaker 4: to Rule the World, and I believe it may be
- 8:07Speaker 4: released as a forty forty first anniversary on the date
- 8:14Speaker 4: of it forty first first anniversary like that. Yeah, some
- 8:19Speaker 4: time commemorative song.
- 8:22Speaker 5: Yeah cool. Did you toughen it up at all? Or
- 8:24Speaker 5: did you? Did you keep it?
- 8:26Speaker 1: Put it this way?
- 8:27Speaker 5: There's no.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it's definitely a sound of yeah. Yeah it's yeah,
- 8:36Speaker 1: it didn't do too much to it, but yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 5: I'll only be available on the hard copy of You Guys.
- 8:41Speaker 5: So people, if you're Tears for Fears fan, get on
- 8:44Speaker 5: there and prove it now.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Yeah, that's.
- 8:48Speaker 5: Speak about songs on the album.
- 8:50Speaker 3: I notices one on there called Frozen too, Like is
- 8:52Speaker 3: that a clever marketing point to get the kiddies involved?
- 8:56Speaker 4: No, no, no.
- 9:00Speaker 1: It's a bit. Yeah.
- 9:01Speaker 2: We could take it on board and get your dresses
- 9:03Speaker 2: anywhere else the next.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Time you play. I don't know how I would have
- 9:10Speaker 1: to be maybe the Snowman.
- 9:15Speaker 4: Yeah, Frozen is actually very deep song as well. I
- 9:22Speaker 4: quite liked it. It was one of my favorites when
- 9:26Speaker 4: I was writing it. Very emotive and it's about how
- 9:36Speaker 4: can you find that part of yourself when it's frozen,
- 9:38Speaker 4: like when it's I guess I had the idea of like,
- 9:42Speaker 4: you know, being trapped in ice. You know, like you
- 9:46Speaker 4: can't get to that, you can't get to that secret
- 9:48Speaker 4: part of yourself very well. So yeah, that's that's sort
- 9:56Speaker 4: of like a little bit of a metaphor there.
- 9:58Speaker 5: But cool.
- 10:04Speaker 3: And of course when bands released an album, it's not
- 10:08Speaker 3: just the album and that's the end of it.
- 10:10Speaker 5: You've got to hit the road and you've got to
- 10:11Speaker 5: play it live with people. So what do you guys
- 10:13Speaker 5: got coming up?
- 10:16Speaker 4: Yeah, Dan, you want to tackle that?
- 10:20Speaker 2: First gig off the ranks, I think is is the
- 10:24Speaker 2: bris Vegas rocks at while it's when she is the
- 10:31Speaker 2: twenty first of March, I think that's the first one.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Then we've got some other things popping up in the
- 10:37Speaker 2: future with the ex Music birthday bash that Tim's pun on.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I think that's the first of me in Brisbane, and
- 10:47Speaker 2: I believe we're on the Norwhere festival as well later
- 10:50Speaker 2: in the year.
- 10:52Speaker 3: That's it's the best place for people to keep up
- 10:56Speaker 3: to date with you and to get a copy of
- 10:57Speaker 3: your album.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Then that's based on Facebook is the key place.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Yeah, you can also go to x Music big Cartel
- 11:10Speaker 4: page and all our merchers listed there. Everything from T
- 11:15Speaker 4: shirt single release shirt, so there's probably going to be
- 11:19Speaker 4: an album release shirt, and the album can be purchased there,
- 11:25Speaker 4: both digitally and a physical hard copy as well. Fantastic
- 11:32Speaker 4: Come to our shows and we'll sell you a CD
- 11:35Speaker 4: and put a few signatures.
- 11:36Speaker 1: On it.
- 11:38Speaker 5: Straight thanks for your time.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Behind the Walls is out today Friday, February thirty. I
- 11:44Speaker 3: have had the pleasure of having listened to your guys
- 11:45Speaker 3: and it's a fantastic effort. With all the doom and gloom,
- 11:49Speaker 3: there is an uplifting experience, so well done.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Thanks very much, Christ, Thanks for you support.
