- 0:00Speaker 1: When we play our game, we can be a really
- 0:05Speaker 1: good team.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Welcome to Kraken This Morning, a presentation of the Kraken
- 0:09Speaker 2: Audio Network and Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM. Here's Mike Benton.
- 0:15Speaker 3: A direct answer from head coach Lane Lambert after practice
- 0:18Speaker 3: on Monday on the state of the team. Coming off
- 0:21Speaker 3: a five-game road trip and heading into a four-game homestand.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Starting tonight. Welcome to Kraken this morning on a Tuesday,
- 0:27Speaker 3: October 20th. The Kraken take on the Detroit Red Wings
- 0:31Speaker 3: in the second and final matchup. We've already gotten there,
- 0:34Speaker 3: funny enough. And face-off is coming your way at 6.40
- 0:36Speaker 3: from Climate Pledge Arena. We're on air 6 p.m. Pre-game
- 0:41Speaker 3: show served up by Frost Brewed Coors Light.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Choose chill.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Everett Fitzhugh, Al Kaniski in the booth. I'll join you
- 0:47Speaker 3: once again right back by the Coors Light landing in
- 0:49Speaker 3: Section 20. one-hour postgame show after the final horn, which
- 0:54Speaker 3: also includes Talking Kraken. I will be joined by Al
- 0:57Speaker 3: Koniski for your questions, and we'll certainly have answers. The
- 1:02Speaker 3: Kraken trying to get back on the winning track after
- 1:05Speaker 3: taking one on the chin back on Saturday in an
- 1:08Speaker 3: 8-3 loss to the Florida Panthers. So we'll hear from
- 1:11Speaker 3: Mackie Samaskevich, plus more of head coach Lane Lambert and
- 1:14Speaker 3: his reaction after the road trip and a Monday practice
- 1:18Speaker 3: where the Kraken made a switch Within their top six,
- 1:21Speaker 3: you'll hear why. Plus Sam Miskevich and his game with
- 1:25Speaker 3: new line mates. All that coming up in just a bit. Well,
- 1:29Speaker 3: the Kraken knew the end of a five-game road trip
- 1:31Speaker 3: would mean more than just having to dig deep. They
- 1:34Speaker 3: would have to do so against one of the powers
- 1:36Speaker 3: of the Eastern Conference in the Florida Panthers, who won
- 1:40Speaker 3: back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2024-2024.
- 1:44Speaker 2: And 20-25.
- 1:44Speaker 3: They also loaded up on their top line with newcomer
- 1:48Speaker 3: Brady Kachuk playing with Matthew and their centerman Sam Bennett
- 1:52Speaker 3: who wasted little time getting going in period one where
- 1:56Speaker 3: the Kraken knew they had a big challenge in a
- 1:59Speaker 3: rough and physical Panthers team.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Brady Kachuk back in over the near blue line as
- 2:04Speaker 4: he and Sam Bennett will battle for the puck. Now
- 2:06Speaker 4: Matthew Kachuk gets in. It's batted in out of midair
- 2:09Speaker 4: and they score. The captain off a tip from Shane Wright.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Katton in front, Shane Wright tips it in, and they score!
- 2:17Speaker 4: What a play, Berkeley Katton on the right side, threw
- 2:21Speaker 4: it toward the net, Shane Wright didn't stop going hard
- 2:25Speaker 4: to the goal, redirects it in, and the Florida Panthers
- 2:28Speaker 4: are now tied 1-1. Kraken have evened the game up.
- 2:31Speaker 5: We've talked a lot about this line and the offense
- 2:33Speaker 5: that they can generate, and it's Ryan Winterton down the
- 2:36Speaker 5: left side that gets that puck over to Berkeley Katton.
- 2:38Speaker 5: And then Berkley Cat with a beautiful backhand pass to
- 2:42Speaker 5: the middle of the ice that Shane Wright just redirects
- 2:45Speaker 5: on net. He finds the top shelf glove side on Markstrom.
- 2:49Speaker 5: This game's tied at one.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Heller.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Tamekula behind the goal.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Wrap around.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Try on the back side. And Carter Verhage gets the
- 2:58Speaker 4: hat trick. Last bit of the play here in the second.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Crack it.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Keep it alive.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Freddy Gaudreau on the back door.
- 3:03Speaker 6: Scores!
- 3:06Speaker 4: What a move by Freddy Gaudreau. from the right circle,
- 3:10Speaker 4: walked in toward the net, he head faked like he
- 3:13Speaker 4: was gonna dish it over to Myers, but instead slides
- 3:16Speaker 4: it five hole. The fourth line strikes again, and the
- 3:20Speaker 4: Kraken back to within four. It's a 6-2 Panther lead.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Well, it's Winterton that keeps the puck in the offensive zone,
- 3:27Speaker 5: chops it back to Adam Larson, who gets it down
- 3:29Speaker 5: to Freddy Gaudreau, and you're right, he has Myers that
- 3:32Speaker 5: he sells that pass to, gets Larson to bite on it,
- 3:35Speaker 5: and slides it just past his right pad.
- 3:37Speaker 3: 6-2, Florida.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Back to Matthew for the line now for Kulikov. Here's Balinskis,
- 3:42Speaker 4: now shot from Bennett!
- 3:44Speaker 3: Scores!
- 3:47Speaker 4: Two hat-tricks in the game for Florida. Sam Bennett gets
- 3:51Speaker 4: his third. 8-3, Panthers.
- 3:54Speaker 3: That was the story as two late first period goals
- 3:56Speaker 3: helped the Panthers eventually pull away and eventually beat the
- 3:59Speaker 3: Kraken 8-3 on not one, but two hat tricks. Carter
- 4:03Speaker 3: Verhage is coming of the natural variety and making NHL
- 4:06Speaker 3: history in the process. The Panthers becoming the first in
- 4:10Speaker 3: NHL history to author natural hat tricks in three consecutive games.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Brady Kachuk had the first two, Carter Verhage first. had
- 4:18Speaker 3: the contest against the Kraken. And while Bennett completed his
- 4:21Speaker 3: hat trick, that helped the Panthers become the first team
- 4:23Speaker 3: in over a century to get four or more hat
- 4:26Speaker 3: tricks before their 10th game of the season. Plenty to
- 4:30Speaker 3: clean up on the Kraken side from that game, but
- 4:33Speaker 3: plenty to take away from a road trip where they
- 4:36Speaker 3: got 7 of 10 points. But nonetheless, Lane Lambert shifting
- 4:39Speaker 3: the attention after practice on Monday to where the Kraken
- 4:43Speaker 3: have to look for more In their top six, offensively
- 4:46Speaker 3: versus defensively?
- 4:48Speaker 1: I think you could probably call it a little bit
- 4:50Speaker 1: of both. You know, we had some really good contributions
- 4:54Speaker 1: from them on the power play. You know, five on five,
- 4:59Speaker 1: we had great contributions from our so-called third and fourth lines.
- 5:04Speaker 1: You know, and I just think that we'll see. You know,
- 5:08Speaker 1: for me, there just wasn't, there doesn't seem to be
- 5:12Speaker 1: something clicking there. And so, you know, make a little
- 5:15Speaker 1: adjustment and see where we go.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Waiting to that point, when you make a change like that,
- 5:19Speaker 4: do you talk to the players about it or do you.
- 5:21Speaker 7: Just say we're going to try this?
- 5:22Speaker 1: Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't.
- 5:25Speaker 4: On the flip of the other two lines that aren't clicking.
- 5:28Speaker 5: How does that feel as.
- 5:29Speaker 7: A coach when you did get the chemistry right and
- 5:31Speaker 7: you're finding the.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Complementary pieces that do work together?
- 5:33Speaker 1: Well, I mean, those guys are, you know, those guys
- 5:36Speaker 1: did a real good job for us. And I'm not
- 5:38Speaker 1: saying the top lines didn't either. You know, we had
- 5:41Speaker 1: some contributions from everybody. It's just, you know, five on five.
- 5:47Speaker 1: You know, we just flipped one player on each line.
- 5:51Speaker 1: So it's not this big sweeping, oh my goodness. You know,
- 5:55Speaker 1: we'll see where we go from there. But certainly... The guys,
- 5:59Speaker 1: like I say, the Caton line, the Freddie Goudreau line,
- 6:05Speaker 1: they played real well for us and good for them.
- 6:11Speaker 1: It was a successful road trip when you look at
- 6:13Speaker 1: their record. The last game leaves you with a bad
- 6:17Speaker 1: taste in your mouth for sure, but there's a lot
- 6:21Speaker 1: of positives to it.
- 6:21Speaker 4: We have to.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Move past the last game, learn from it, And, you know,
- 6:29Speaker 1: my biggest takeaway from that last game was, you know,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I think there was probably 11 and a half minutes
- 6:36Speaker 1: left on the clock in the first period. And the
- 6:39Speaker 1: next shot Florida got on goal was the Verhege goal
- 6:42Speaker 1: with two minutes and three seconds left. So, you know,
- 6:46Speaker 1: and that came from some mistakes that we made on
- 6:50Speaker 1: cut and dry, clean situations. And they were face-offs. So,
- 6:57Speaker 1: It's just a good reminder for us that you have
- 7:01Speaker 1: to be detailed and if you're not, it can slip fast.
- 7:08Speaker 7: What's your read on what kind of changes that they're
- 7:11Speaker 7: creating and producing as.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Of right now? My read is that they're producing a
- 7:18Speaker 1: lot of opportunities. I think the three of them together
- 7:25Speaker 1: are doing a really good job. I think Shane's using
- 7:28Speaker 1: his speed. I think Berkeley is, in my mind anyways,
- 7:32Speaker 1: he's clearly in the right spot on the ice. And
- 7:35Speaker 1: that's through the middle with the puck. And, you know,
- 7:39Speaker 1: and then Kapo is working down low. He's made some
- 7:41Speaker 1: nice plays to those guys, you know. Or Shane probably
- 7:43Speaker 1: could have had two or three goals in Tampa. So,
- 7:46Speaker 1: you know, I think they're just, you know, they're confident.
- 7:50Speaker 1: They're using their speed. And, you know, they're playing really,
- 7:53Speaker 1: to be honest with you, against... any line. They played
- 7:57Speaker 1: Point's line, they played Kucherov's line, so they're gaining some
- 8:01Speaker 1: confidence that way.
- 8:02Speaker 7: I think in that sense, you mentioned at the end
- 8:04Speaker 7: of the trip that you want to keep the lines
- 8:06Speaker 7: balanced with ice time. At this point in time, how
- 8:08Speaker 7: much does.
- 8:09Speaker 4: That put them in a position to.
- 8:11Speaker 7: Get more ice time as far as the matches that
- 8:13Speaker 7: they see and more ice time that they get?
- 8:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it can be, but again, I think the balance
- 8:19Speaker 1: has been pretty good for the most part. The reason
- 8:22Speaker 1: maybe And Chandler Stevenson is at 17 minutes on average
- 8:26Speaker 1: just because of penalty killing. He plays both that and
- 8:29Speaker 1: the power play. So if you look at their five-on-five minutes,
- 8:32Speaker 1: it's pretty balanced. But as we go forward here, they
- 8:35Speaker 1: keep playing like that. They'll garner more ice time for sure.
- 8:38Speaker 6: When you have a game like that where Ruby had
- 8:40Speaker 6: played two in a row, Joey comes in, obviously Buck's
- 8:43Speaker 6: going in.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:45Speaker 6: How do you balance making a change versus protecting his
- 8:48Speaker 6: confidence versus all those different things to decide when it's
- 8:52Speaker 6: right to make a change?
- 8:53Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a great question. Stand behind the bench some
- 8:56Speaker 1: night and make that decision. Groobie had played two games.
- 9:02Speaker 1: There was no point in putting him in. The last
- 9:06Speaker 1: thing you want to do is have him come off
- 9:07Speaker 1: the bench tired, risk injury. Joey Decord is a battler.
- 9:13Speaker 1: And I had no doubt in my mind that he
- 9:16Speaker 1: was going to continue to battle through whatever it is
- 9:18Speaker 1: we were throwing at him. And, you know, he just
- 9:23Speaker 1: went about his business and battled and battled and full
- 9:27Speaker 1: respect for him. I think that there's no question that,
- 9:30Speaker 1: you know, he understands why. And, you know, and that's
- 9:36Speaker 1: part of why he's a good teammate. You have to
- 9:39Speaker 1: be selfless as a teammate. And I think Joey's selfless.
- 9:44Speaker 1: maybe a more selfish goalie would be looking over at
- 9:47Speaker 1: the bench, but he never looked at the bench once.
- 9:50Speaker 1: A real good moment for our hockey team and our culture.
- 10:03Speaker 1: I think he's playing with confidence. As we go along
- 10:09Speaker 1: here and as our young players get more and more
- 10:11Speaker 1: experience and more and more game experience and more and
- 10:15Speaker 1: more month by month experience, they get a little bit better.
- 10:19Speaker 1: You know, and are they ever going to have a
- 10:21Speaker 1: bad stretch? Probably. But certainly I think that, you know,
- 10:26Speaker 1: they're doing a pretty good job of gaining confidence, and
- 10:29Speaker 1: I think that's what he's doing. And that line is
- 10:31Speaker 1: dialed in. I think, you know, Freddie's playing great. Freddie is,
- 10:35Speaker 1: you know, his face-offs have gone way up. We don't
- 10:38Speaker 1: talk about Freddie Boudreaux a lot. He leads our team
- 10:40Speaker 1: in goals. You know, I don't know what more you
- 10:43Speaker 1: want to say about that. You know, he's playing great hockey.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And he's given us everything he's got. And it shows,
- 10:53Speaker 1: you know, he's leading that line. He's leading those young guys,
- 10:55Speaker 1: Myers and Winterton.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Lane, over this trip, were there things.
- 10:58Speaker 4: About your team game that you saw strengthen or maybe
- 11:01Speaker 4: get more baked in?
- 11:06Speaker 1: My problem on our trip, even though the record was
- 11:09Speaker 1: what it was, I thought there were some inconsistencies. And
- 11:13Speaker 1: that's one thing we talked about right from day one.
- 11:15Speaker 1: We've got to be more consistent.
- 11:17Speaker 8: So.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I think there was some really good moments about certain
- 11:22Speaker 1: areas of our game, whether it be some of the
- 11:25Speaker 1: changes we've made in our D zone or some of
- 11:27Speaker 1: the neutral zone changes we've made. I think offensively, I
- 11:32Speaker 1: really like what's happened with our offensive play and our
- 11:37Speaker 1: plays off the rush and some of the concepts that
- 11:40Speaker 1: we have there we're creating in my mind a little
- 11:44Speaker 1: bit more than we were in the past. So there's
- 11:45Speaker 1: certainly a lot of areas that I was like, okay,
- 11:48Speaker 1: This is good. And then all of a sudden, you know, wham,
- 11:53Speaker 1: where is it? So, you know, it's an everyday game.
- 11:58Speaker 1: It doesn't matter if you've won three in a row,
- 12:00Speaker 1: lost three in a row, if you're up in the
- 12:02Speaker 1: game 5-2, if you're down in the game 5-2, you've
- 12:05Speaker 1: got to play the game the same way. A really
- 12:07Speaker 1: good example of that is Florida's beating us 8-3, and,
- 12:12Speaker 1: you know, they're in the offensive zone, and they win
- 12:15Speaker 1: races off the ball to the net. and go right
- 12:18Speaker 1: to the net. Doesn't matter what the score is, the
- 12:20Speaker 1: game doesn't change. So, you know, I think it's a
- 12:23Speaker 1: good learning experience for our hockey team. Sometimes you've got
- 12:25Speaker 1: to take one in the mouth to get some, you know,
- 12:29Speaker 1: to get some understanding of what exactly it takes.
- 12:32Speaker 6: You pointed a few times on the road trip towards skating, like,
- 12:36Speaker 6: you know, we're skating or we're not skating. And what
- 12:40Speaker 6: do you think, like, why does the team stop skating?
- 12:45Speaker 1: Good question. You know, Sometimes a little bit of mental
- 12:51Speaker 1: fatigue comes in. I think when your brain isn't working right,
- 12:55Speaker 1: it transfers down into the old legs. And therefore, you know,
- 13:00Speaker 1: we're not moving our feet as much because our thought
- 13:02Speaker 1: process is a little bit slow. Does that have to
- 13:05Speaker 1: do with being on the road for 11 days? I
- 13:08Speaker 1: don't know. But, you know, I think it's more mental
- 13:12Speaker 1: than it is anything else for me.
- 13:14Speaker 3: At practice on Monday, no surprises as far as the
- 13:17Speaker 3: amount of players the Kraken rolled out with Brandon Montour
- 13:20Speaker 3: still out of action and Lane Lambert keeping his status
- 13:22Speaker 3: at day-to-day with a timetable uncertain for his return. On
- 13:27Speaker 3: top of that, the Kraken making a subtle shift in
- 13:29Speaker 3: their top six. Jordan Eberle moving to Matty Beneers' line
- 13:33Speaker 3: with Jared McCann. Mackie Samaskevich switching with him and trying
- 13:37Speaker 3: things out now with Chandler Stevenson as his center and
- 13:41Speaker 3: Bobby McMahon on the opposite wing. After practice Monday, we
- 13:44Speaker 3: cut up with Samaskevich and his thoughts heading into the
- 13:47Speaker 3: four-game homestand.
- 13:48Speaker 7: Mackie, first off, welcome back home. And I think heading
- 13:50Speaker 7: into a homestand like this, you come off the road
- 13:52Speaker 7: from getting seven points out of 10, despite what happened
- 13:55Speaker 7: on Saturday. What do you think that this team learned
- 13:57Speaker 7: more about each other heading into this homestand?
- 14:00Speaker 8: I think that we learned that we're a good team.
- 14:02Speaker 8: I mean, we were coming off That last one at home,
- 14:06Speaker 8: you know, we definitely learned a lot in that game.
- 14:08Speaker 8: And then we came into this road trip wanting to,
- 14:10Speaker 8: you know, have a good one. And we learned, you know,
- 14:14Speaker 8: we could play with these teams, and that's a good feeling.
- 14:17Speaker 8: And obviously it didn't end the way that we wanted to. But,
- 14:21Speaker 8: you know, I think even when you lose like that,
- 14:24Speaker 8: you learn, I think, way more than if you win,
- 14:26Speaker 8: you know, by that much. So I think down the
- 14:30Speaker 8: line it would be super helpful.
- 14:31Speaker 7: You've been a part of that dressing room on the
- 14:33Speaker 7: other side of course. You know what those guys are
- 14:35Speaker 7: all about. What do you think that was a big
- 14:38Speaker 7: source of a reminder as far as what it takes
- 14:40Speaker 7: to compete no matter what the score is?
- 14:42Speaker 8: Yeah, I think the biggest thing is they play with
- 14:47Speaker 8: their structure and they stick to it. I think in
- 14:50Speaker 8: that game we got down early and then maybe tried
- 14:53Speaker 8: to do too much and maybe got off script a
- 14:56Speaker 8: little bit more, but they're so good at sticking to
- 15:00Speaker 8: their structure. They know it works, and I think we
- 15:03Speaker 8: can take that for our group for sure.
- 15:05Speaker 7: It's often said the hockey world is a small world,
- 15:07Speaker 7: so what did it mean to have a little bit
- 15:08Speaker 7: of a warm reception for you, seeing that on the
- 15:10Speaker 7: video board?
- 15:11Speaker 8: Yeah, it was nice. Good feeling. Nice to see old friends,
- 15:17Speaker 8: and even the day before, just going out to dinner
- 15:20Speaker 8: with the guys you played with was nice, and um
- 15:23Speaker 8: a lot of great memories um people that are great
- 15:26Speaker 8: um definitely was a good.
- 15:27Speaker 7: Feeling small sample size but we did see an adjustment
- 15:30Speaker 7: in how the lines were rolled out recently in practice
- 15:32Speaker 7: what do you take away immediately from what you have
- 15:35Speaker 7: with bobby mcmahon chandler stevenson also playing together.
- 15:38Speaker 8: Yeah i loved it today um i thought we had
- 15:40Speaker 8: a great day um me and bobby can really shoot
- 15:43Speaker 8: the puck and chandler can really find us so i'm
- 15:46Speaker 8: excited about it um you know, I think we've gelled
- 15:49Speaker 8: really well today, so I'm excited to see how it goes.
- 15:51Speaker 7: You see Detroit already once here on this early on
- 15:55Speaker 7: in the schedule. You get them once again here in
- 15:57Speaker 7: this month, so there's some instant, maybe some familiarity right there,
- 16:00Speaker 7: but what do you take away from seeing them for
- 16:02Speaker 7: the first time that you want to get after here?
- 16:04Speaker 8: Yeah, I think, you know, I think we got off
- 16:07Speaker 8: to a slow start last time. It ended up going
- 16:09Speaker 8: our way, but I think getting off to a better
- 16:11Speaker 8: start is going to be helpful, and like you said,
- 16:14Speaker 8: you know, it's still familiar, and we know how they
- 16:18Speaker 8: play and what they're good at, but I think it's
- 16:20Speaker 8: about what we're going to impose on them.
- 16:23Speaker 7: Often it's said that good start is tied to structure,
- 16:26Speaker 7: but when it comes to playing in a place like this,
- 16:28Speaker 7: a good start means also crowd volume. How much does
- 16:31Speaker 7: that make a big impact?
- 16:32Speaker 8: It makes a big impact for sure. We felt that
- 16:34Speaker 8: the first two games at home, it definitely helped a lot.
- 16:40Speaker 8: So I think in terms of getting off to a
- 16:43Speaker 8: good start, the fans will be ready to get off
- 16:45Speaker 8: to a good start, so we've got to I'll be
- 16:47Speaker 8: ready to.
- 16:48Speaker 7: Appreciate this, Mackie.
- 16:49Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 16:49Speaker 3: So with that move, the Kraken hoping it ignites production
- 16:53Speaker 3: out of their top six as Mackie Samaskevich returns home
- 16:56Speaker 3: looking to break out of a four-game goal-scoring drought. His
- 17:00Speaker 3: last goal came against, you guessed it, the Red Wings.
- 17:03Speaker 3: That was back on October 9th when the Kraken beat
- 17:06Speaker 3: them 6-3 and the Kraken looking to run the table
