- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, hello everyone. I am Tommy Larin, along with Rich Edson,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Taylor Riggs, and Jason Chafitz. Welcome to the Big weekend Show.
- 0:07Speaker 1: The big story tonight is the foxing Colernis. President Trump
- 0:12Speaker 1: is reportedly holding off on a major escalation against Iran
- 0:15Speaker 1: axios reports at the top US military commander in the
- 0:18Speaker 1: Middle East, Admiral Brad Cooper, advised stopping the bombing campaign
- 0:22Speaker 1: in the Strait of Hormuz, arguing it has reached the
- 0:24Speaker 1: limit of its effectiveness. Meanwhile, multiple reports indicate that Trump's
- 0:28Speaker 1: advisors raised concerns over US air defense munitions and patriot
- 0:32Speaker 1: interceptors being diminished in the Middle East. The administration is downplaying.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Those reports and shouldn't surprise you. The New York Times
- 0:41Speaker 2: is off base. As the President said, we are locked
- 0:44Speaker 2: and loaded. Even more assets are going into theater. But
- 0:48Speaker 2: he's giving talk some space. He's giving it a little
- 0:51Speaker 2: bit of room. We've had both Immon and Iran and
- 0:54Speaker 2: a number of our other negotiators engaged at every level,
- 0:58Speaker 2: from the most senior levels all the way down to
- 1:00Speaker 2: the technical level over the past few weeks and particularly
- 1:03Speaker 2: in the past few days.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Meanwhile, Auran back toothy rebels launched a massive strike on
- 1:08Speaker 1: Saudi oil facilities with dozens of ballistic missiles and drones.
- 1:12Speaker 1: This escalation opens a new front in the conflict ahead
- 1:15Speaker 1: of Israeli Prime Minister of Benjamin Netnyahu's meeting with President
- 1:18Speaker 1: Trump this Tuesday.
- 1:21Speaker 3: This regime is either toppled or it's sufficiently weakened that
- 1:25Speaker 3: it knows it has to end its nuclear program and
- 1:27Speaker 3: has to change its course. That's really what President Trump
- 1:30Speaker 3: is trying to achieve. It's a good thing to have
- 1:33Speaker 3: the opportunity to sit with our good friend President Trump
- 1:36Speaker 3: and to hear what he has in mind, because I
- 1:38Speaker 3: think in many ways it's his decision.
- 1:43Speaker 1: At the same time, the commander in chief has signed
- 1:45Speaker 1: a massive civilian nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia, giving American
- 1:49Speaker 1: companies priority to build reactors in the country. Jason, I
- 1:54Speaker 1: want to start there. I think that that's a new
- 1:57Speaker 1: twist and turn to all of this. So I want
- 1:59Speaker 1: to get your initial reaction to this news and what
- 2:03Speaker 1: that entails, and if you think that that's a good idea.
- 2:06Speaker 4: I trust the President in this. There's some three dimensional
- 2:09Speaker 4: chess going on here, because when you really start in
- 2:12Speaker 4: the earlier part of the story. If you start looking
- 2:14Speaker 4: at the Huthis, which is a subset or a faction
- 2:17Speaker 4: within Yemen. Yemen in Saudi Arabia have been going at
- 2:20Speaker 4: it for like two decades. I mean when I was
- 2:23Speaker 4: in Congress, I went and visited some of the targeting
- 2:26Speaker 4: sites and how they would do this. That has ties
- 2:29Speaker 4: into Iran. So you can't look at any one of
- 2:31Speaker 4: these elements in its own isolation, because the tentacles of
- 2:35Speaker 4: terrorism that the Iranians have built over the course of
- 2:39Speaker 4: time all tie into this. Now, I think the knee
- 2:42Speaker 4: jerk reaction is say, oh, let's not let anybody have
- 2:45Speaker 4: nuclear development, but in a controlled setting, in a controlled
- 2:49Speaker 4: way where US companies are helping to lead the charge
- 2:51Speaker 4: and we have a say in it for energy production.
- 2:55Speaker 4: That seems to make a lot of sense because we
- 2:57Speaker 4: need to have that relationship with the Saudis. They are
- 3:00Speaker 4: a good partner in this. It's been nefarious in the background,
- 3:03Speaker 4: you know, over the course of time. But I think
- 3:06Speaker 4: the strength and the relationship between the Crown prints and
- 3:09Speaker 4: the President of the United States right now bodes well
- 3:11Speaker 4: for us.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I love your perspective on that. When I
- 3:14Speaker 1: heard it. I was a little taken aback rich when
- 3:16Speaker 1: we started this conflict, we're you know a few months
- 3:19Speaker 1: and now it was about Ron not having a nuclear weapon.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And then quickly the Strait of Horn moves became a
- 3:25Speaker 1: part of this narrative. And then there was some Israel
- 3:27Speaker 1: Lebanon discussions there and then now the Saudi Arabia, this
- 3:31Speaker 1: potential endeavor or this deal, which isn't really potential anymore,
- 3:34Speaker 1: it's right at our doorstep. It's been evolving a lot.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Does this mean that we're in for more than we
- 3:40Speaker 1: bargained for? Or as Jason said, ass always been a
- 3:43Speaker 1: part of it.
- 3:44Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:44Speaker 5: And as Jason noted, there are so many different parties
- 3:47Speaker 5: in this region. They are all interconnected, they all play
- 3:50Speaker 5: off each other. And also, not to mention, remember when
- 3:53Speaker 5: the Civilian nuclear deal too, and trying to draw closer
- 3:55Speaker 5: to Saudi Arabia. There's the question of okay, well China
- 3:59Speaker 5: fill vacuum if the United States leaves the regions. So
- 4:02Speaker 5: that is on the horizon as well, in a question
- 4:05Speaker 5: for US policymakers. But yes, you have all of these
- 4:08Speaker 5: different interconnected groups, the Houthis and Yemens who are backed
- 4:11Speaker 5: by the Iranian regime now have entered the fray in
- 4:16Speaker 5: the back and forth. And at first, Yeah, the President
- 4:18Speaker 5: had a long list of issues that the United States
- 4:21Speaker 5: wanted to tackle in this conflict. It's a very old list.
- 4:26Speaker 5: It's get rid of the regime. It's stop the ballistic
- 4:29Speaker 5: missile program, It's stop the regional proxies, including supporting the
- 4:34Speaker 5: Houthis all across the region. Until this conflict, the Iranians
- 4:41Speaker 5: had not shut down the Straight of hor moves, and
- 4:43Speaker 5: so that got added to the list. And so now
- 4:45Speaker 5: the focus really is back to nuclear which has always
- 4:48Speaker 5: really been the primary driver above all those other issues,
- 4:52Speaker 5: and now reopening the Straight of Horror moves. And it's
- 4:54Speaker 5: just it seems to be quite cyclical at this moment.
- 4:57Speaker 1: A lot of things involved, so it feels like this
- 5:00Speaker 1: is ever changing, as these things are in the Middle East.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Try to figure it out. I don't think it's going
- 5:04Speaker 1: to work, Taylor. We're going to get into the economics
- 5:06Speaker 1: of all of this shortly, but I want to go
- 5:08Speaker 1: to kind of where we started in this segment, talking
- 5:10Speaker 1: about some of the reports that have been dismissed or
- 5:13Speaker 1: downplayed by the administration about you know, perhaps we have
- 5:18Speaker 1: limited our ability to respond at the moment. We need
- 5:20Speaker 1: to rearm, we need to do something about our munitions supply,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and of course the administration saying that that's not the case.
- 5:27Speaker 1: But what do you make of that? Do you think
- 5:29Speaker 1: that the American people are going to be concerned?
- 5:31Speaker 4: No?
- 5:31Speaker 6: I think it means that if whenever we talk about
- 5:34Speaker 6: sort of this massive attack that maybe will or will
- 5:36Speaker 6: not come, or will come later. I think we are
- 5:38Speaker 6: trying to give diplomacy ten more chances. I continually hear
- 5:43Speaker 6: from Larry Kudlow, who is on the program frequently, this
- 5:46Speaker 6: is this is a president that honestly like hates dropping bombs.
- 5:50Speaker 6: He wants peace through strength, and he's trying to give
- 5:53Speaker 6: this a chance for as long as possible. He wants
- 5:55Speaker 6: to be able to go to the American people and
- 5:56Speaker 6: say we tried, we tried everything we could not to
- 6:00Speaker 6: drop bombs on them, but they're crazy and they're terrorists,
- 6:03Speaker 6: and so this is all that we had left.
- 6:06Speaker 1: When we think about.
- 6:07Speaker 6: The Middle East and that nuclear deal in Saudi Arabia.
- 6:11Speaker 1: I am also not.
- 6:12Speaker 6: Totally opposed to it because I think it helps put
- 6:15Speaker 6: the region on notice. I think Iran has been shooting
- 6:20Speaker 6: at its neighbors, and who would have thought ten twenty
- 6:22Speaker 6: years ago Iran would be shooting drone attacks at Saudi Qatar, Dubai,
- 6:28Speaker 6: you name it. And so I think this helps in
- 6:30Speaker 6: that region. You're either with Iran in China or you're
- 6:32Speaker 6: with the US, and this starts to pull all of
- 6:35Speaker 6: those Gulf nations towards the US to further isolate Iran.
- 6:40Speaker 6: Iran now pretty much only has China and Russia, maybe Cuba,
- 6:44Speaker 6: but we're also trying to pull Cuban Venezuela our way.
- 6:47Speaker 6: And so I think when we think about we don't
- 6:49Speaker 6: want nuclear proliferation in the Middle East, but we also
- 6:53Speaker 6: want to start to really isolate Iran. And I think
- 6:55Speaker 6: this also puts Iran on notice, like your neighbors are
- 6:58Speaker 6: not your friends, they are coming towards the West. Why
- 7:02Speaker 6: because when you have peace, you have massive prosperity. And
- 7:05Speaker 6: I think Saudi Arabia and Dubais, with those other countries,
- 7:07Speaker 6: they want prosperity and you get that by going through peace.
- 7:12Speaker 1: So I think you also.
- 7:13Speaker 6: Mentioned Bebe's Median on Tuesday, China's using Ping is going
- 7:18Speaker 6: to be coming here in September, and so I think
- 7:21Speaker 6: this also trying to figure out about with our relationships
- 7:25Speaker 6: with China right now, what does this mean for that
- 7:27Speaker 6: meeting in September. I notably, something we'll talk about.
- 7:30Speaker 1: The enemy of my enemy is my friend. We're gonna
- 7:34Speaker 1: turn to this as we discuss this further, because latest
- 7:38Speaker 1: data shows American oil refineries are running at near full capacity,
- 7:42Speaker 1: hitting over ninety six percent. The war with Iran is
- 7:44Speaker 1: putting America's energy dominance to the test, for sure, but
- 7:47Speaker 1: it's currently holding. As the US ship exports more gasoline, diesel,
- 7:51Speaker 1: and jet fuel. Americans are paying for it, though, because
- 7:54Speaker 1: the national average of gas prices is now topping four
- 7:58Speaker 1: dollars a gallon. Jason, we didn't get a chance to
- 8:01Speaker 1: talk to you about the good old gas prices yesterday,
- 8:04Speaker 1: so I want you to weigh in. You know, we
- 8:05Speaker 1: had a discussion at this table about not downplaying the
- 8:08Speaker 1: concerns of everyday Americans who paying more for gas is
- 8:12Speaker 1: a make or break thing for them. You know, in
- 8:14Speaker 1: their monthly budget, they can't afford a whole lot extra
- 8:18Speaker 1: and right now they're trying to be patient, but they're
- 8:19Speaker 1: getting a little concerned that these gas prices are going
- 8:22Speaker 1: to be elevated for quite some time. What's your take.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Well, President Trump has shown that he can drive down
- 8:26Speaker 4: the price of gas to about two dollars a gallon.
- 8:29Speaker 4: It was below two dollars a gallon and you taugh
- 8:31Speaker 4: at one point. Now Aroan has set that back. I
- 8:33Speaker 4: don't think that was the president's goal to enter into
- 8:36Speaker 4: this conflict, but I think he saw the necessity to
- 8:39Speaker 4: protect the United States of America. I'm okay paying a
- 8:42Speaker 4: little bit more for gasoline understanding that we have a bigger,
- 8:45Speaker 4: broader security mission at play. I think the message from
- 8:49Speaker 4: the administration needs to be one of yes, energy independents,
- 8:53Speaker 4: but that truly's got to mean energy independence. Thank goodness
- 8:57Speaker 4: what the Energy Secretary, President Trump and certainly Lee Zeldon
- 9:00Speaker 4: at the APA have done. Otherwise, gas would be like
- 9:03Speaker 4: six seven dollars a gallon, and it'd probably be nine
- 9:05Speaker 4: or ten dollars in California, so not everywhere in the
- 9:08Speaker 4: country is the same. Gavin Newsom is purposely driving up
- 9:11Speaker 4: the cost of gasoline in California, so it's got to
- 9:16Speaker 4: get better. I think it'll hurt Republicans in the midterms,
- 9:19Speaker 4: but the goal is a safe, secure the United States
- 9:23Speaker 4: of America that is energy independent and self sufficient, and
- 9:26Speaker 4: I still think we're on that trajectory. We have to
- 9:28Speaker 4: fill up the strategic petroleum reserves. By the way, it
- 9:31Speaker 4: still bothers me that Biden drained knows that was terribly irresponsible.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Should we have a natural disaster something more horrific than that.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Yeah, we discussed that yesterday. I'm sure we're discuss it more.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I'm going to go to the end of the table
- 9:42Speaker 1: and talk to Taylor about that. Yeah, I want you
- 9:45Speaker 1: to piggyback off of that.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:47Speaker 1: I talked about this yesterday, but in Layman's terms, to
- 9:50Speaker 1: the everyday American that are watching this and now they're
- 9:53Speaker 1: seeing some Saudi deals potentially, but they're also saying, okay,
- 9:57Speaker 1: well what about the strait of her moves? Now we
- 9:59Speaker 1: got the who thies were worried about a second front
- 10:01Speaker 1: of this war? Are we going to go over five
- 10:03Speaker 1: dollars a gallon? What are the holidays going to look
- 10:05Speaker 1: like for us? You know what? Do you tell them
- 10:07Speaker 1: to ease their fears? Or I guess maybe not.
- 10:10Speaker 6: Yeah. So we are the world's exporter of crude. That
- 10:14Speaker 6: is the good news. But the bad news is it
- 10:16Speaker 6: is priced globally, so pretty much traders who are setting
- 10:20Speaker 6: the price of oil are looking at supply and they're
- 10:22Speaker 6: looking at demand, and right now there's a lot more
- 10:25Speaker 6: demand than there is supply. So even though we are
- 10:28Speaker 6: exporting and producing a lot more, they're looking at global supply,
- 10:33Speaker 6: not US supply. So when people come to me and
- 10:35Speaker 6: they say, but we are producing a lot of oil,
- 10:37Speaker 6: so why are our prices going up, it's just priced
- 10:41Speaker 6: on a global market. Unfortunately, that's just the way it is,
- 10:44Speaker 6: so that's why prices are moving. I think the point
- 10:48Speaker 6: to California, one extra dollar per gallon goes to taxes alone.
- 10:54Speaker 1: There are regulation.
- 10:55Speaker 6: Taxes, stayed in, local taxes, green energy taxes, so that's
- 10:58Speaker 6: why they're getting it's to four five six dollars when
- 11:01Speaker 6: the rest of the nation is on average at four
- 11:04Speaker 6: add a dollar in California because they like to tax you.
- 11:07Speaker 6: They also don't refine in California because of the anti
- 11:10Speaker 6: business climate. They push refineries out of the state, so
- 11:13Speaker 6: they import their crude from wait for it, Iraq and
- 11:18Speaker 6: the Bahamas because they don't want to import or refine
- 11:22Speaker 6: their own, and so they're importing dirty oil from a
- 11:25Speaker 6: rock to do so.
- 11:26Speaker 1: I think the hard part is well, and then.
- 11:27Speaker 6: I'll wrap this up not get too nitty gritty. There
- 11:30Speaker 6: is the light sweet crude and then there's the heavy sour,
- 11:34Speaker 6: and refineries are meant to process either one. And so
- 11:38Speaker 6: even though we produce light sweet, a lot of the
- 11:42Speaker 6: refineries are meant to refine heavy sour imports from the
- 11:45Speaker 6: Middle East or from Canada. So it's just more complicated
- 11:50Speaker 6: than where energy independent and therefore we can set our
- 11:53Speaker 6: own prices.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Right, Rich, How does this play? And I know you're
- 11:56Speaker 1: going to Michigan sand sure, am. I don't know if
- 11:59Speaker 1: they're necessarily focused on the conflict in Iran or gas prices,
- 12:03Speaker 1: so they have some other things on their agenda item,
- 12:05Speaker 1: but I think that the people in Michigan are going
- 12:07Speaker 1: to be paying attention to this. How is it going
- 12:09Speaker 1: to change primaries, change midterms? Yeah?
- 12:11Speaker 5: I mean, you know, just covering politics over the past
- 12:14Speaker 5: well past twenty years basically, but the really ongoing since
- 12:19Speaker 5: the twenty twenty four election, it's been the cost of living.
- 12:21Speaker 5: The cost of living has impacted that election. It's a
- 12:26Speaker 5: large part of why President Trump got another go at
- 12:29Speaker 5: the White House and now he's in charge and prices
- 12:33Speaker 5: have continued to go up because we're not only talking
- 12:34Speaker 5: about filling up your car, we're talking about filling up
- 12:38Speaker 5: your semitruck with diesel. That takes all the products that
- 12:42Speaker 5: you buy from the shelf, which makes it more expensive
- 12:44Speaker 5: to transport them, which makes it more expensive for all
- 12:47Speaker 5: of us to buy that stuff. So it's showing up
- 12:50Speaker 5: an inflation across the economy. And you know, if first off,
- 12:54Speaker 5: it's a difficult election environment that you have Republicans and
- 12:57Speaker 5: control of the House, the Senate, and the White House,
- 13:00Speaker 5: that's a tough environment for any midterm election. You're fully
- 13:03Speaker 5: in control, and you sure there are plenty of voters
- 13:06Speaker 5: out there who will say this attack was for the
- 13:09Speaker 5: greater good In the end, I'm okay paying a couple
- 13:12Speaker 5: of dollars more gallon maybe for the short term, but
- 13:16Speaker 5: if they feel like that's turning into the long term,
- 13:18Speaker 5: or they're just looking at their grocery bill or looking
- 13:20Speaker 5: at their fuel bill, that's not a good mix to
- 13:23Speaker 5: be going into the mid terms.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Now.
- 13:24Speaker 5: Democrats have their own problems, certainly, but that foundation for
- 13:28Speaker 5: Republicans is a challenge.
- 13:29Speaker 1: I think that's how this administration is going to be judged.
- 13:31Speaker 1: And I think they can get back on track. Jet
- 13:34Speaker 1: fuel is also going up to If you've been booking
- 13:36Speaker 1: airline tickets lately, you know that they've been passing that
- 13:39Speaker 1: right on along.
- 13:40Speaker 5: Planes don't fly on magic.
- 13:41Speaker 1: So yeah, Well, the Democrats had hoped for a while
- 13:44Speaker 1: that they could power them in some weird way, but alas.
