- 0:05Speaker 1: Good morning.
- 0:07Speaker 1: If you've got your Bible, open it up to Mark
- 0:09Speaker 1: chapter 4. You know, it's a great thing to open
- 0:12Speaker 1: our Bible in the morning and say to God, OK, God,
- 0:18Speaker 1: I'm listening, because God likes to speak to us through
- 0:21Speaker 1: the Bible. It's not that when you open your Bible,
- 0:24Speaker 1: a voice starts booming out of it. No, but God's
- 0:28Speaker 1: spirit in your heart.
- 0:31Speaker 1: He will point out things that are just for you
- 0:35Speaker 1: in the passage you read in the Bible, and God
- 0:38Speaker 1: will speak to you about your life, and He'll speak
- 0:41Speaker 1: to you about Himself and His promises to you, His
- 0:45Speaker 1: encouragement to you, His love for you, His grace that
- 0:49Speaker 1: is there for you. He'll get your perspective right that
- 0:52Speaker 1: life is not about you, it's about Him.
- 0:54Speaker 1: And that as you build your life around him, he
- 0:58Speaker 1: will then focus his attention on you as well in
- 1:02Speaker 1: a great way. So don't forget to make it your
- 1:07Speaker 1: practise each day to open your Bible and listen to God.
- 1:13Speaker 1: We want to talk this week on the theme of
- 1:15Speaker 1: trusting God.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I want to read a passage out of Mark chapter
- 1:20Speaker 1: 4 in the Bible, starting in verse 35.
- 1:24Speaker 1: It says, and on that day when evening had come.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Jesus said to them,
- 1:30Speaker 1: Let us go over to the other side.
- 1:33Speaker 1: And leaving the multitude, they took him along with them
- 1:37Speaker 1: just as he was in the boat.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And other boats were with him.
- 1:43Speaker 1: And there arose a fierce gale of wind.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And the waves were breaking over the boat so much
- 1:51Speaker 1: that the boat was already filling up.
- 1:54Speaker 1: You can just imagine it. The water's coming over the edge.
- 1:58Speaker 1: They can't bail it out fast enough. Others are trying
- 2:00Speaker 1: to row, trying to get to the other side.
- 2:04Speaker 1: It says in verse 38, and he himself, Jesus was
- 2:09Speaker 1: in the stern, the back.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Asleep on the cushion.
- 2:17Speaker 1: And they awoke him and said to him, Teacher, do
- 2:20Speaker 1: you not care that we are perishing? We're dying.
- 2:26Speaker 1: And being aroused, he rebuked the wind and said to
- 2:32Speaker 1: the sea, hush.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Be still
- 2:37Speaker 1: And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.
- 2:45Speaker 1: And he said to them, Why are you so timid?
- 2:49Speaker 1: How is it that you have no faith?
- 2:53Speaker 1: And they became very much afraid and said to one another,
- 2:56Speaker 1: Who then is this that even the wind and the
- 2:59Speaker 1: sea obey him.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Well, it's a fascinating story, isn't it? Fantastic.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And there's so many contrasts in this passage, aren't there?
- 3:12Speaker 1: There's the storm and then this unbelievable calm. The wind
- 3:18Speaker 1: died down. It became perfectly calm.
- 3:23Speaker 1: There's also the contrast between the disciples' response and Jesus'
- 3:28Speaker 1: response to that storm. Now, both Jesus and the disciples
- 3:33Speaker 1: are in the same situation, right? They're both in this
- 3:36Speaker 1: desperate storm, this fierce gale of wind, the waves breaking
- 3:40Speaker 1: over the boat, the boat starting to fill up, the
- 3:43Speaker 1: disciples totally panicked, and Jesus resting peacefully in the back
- 3:50Speaker 1: of the boat.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Well, what was it that made the disciples and Jesus
- 3:56Speaker 1: respond so differently?
- 3:59Speaker 1: The answer comes in Jesus's question to them.
- 4:03Speaker 1: After he has calmed the storm.
- 4:06Speaker 1: He said to them, Why are you so timid?
- 4:10Speaker 1: How is it that you have no faith?
- 4:17Speaker 1: Do you know that when you face the most awful
- 4:21Speaker 1: situations in your life, the most awful personal storms of life.
- 4:29Speaker 1: How you are able to respond in those situations depends
- 4:35Speaker 1: on how you have built your faith in God.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Do you know how to build your faith, to increase
- 4:42Speaker 1: your faith?
- 4:43Speaker 1: It's to get to know God better because the more
- 4:47Speaker 1: you know of what God is really like and who
- 4:50Speaker 1: He really is.
- 4:51Speaker 1: The more you will be at peace when you encounter
- 4:55Speaker 1: the storms of life knowing that he is in control.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Get to know God better today. Spend some time with Him.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I'm John North
