Speaker 1: Chapter eleven, fines print of man's foot on the sand.
• 0:11
Speaker 1: It would have made a stoic smile to have seen
• 0:14
Speaker 1: me and my little family sit down to dinner. There
• 0:18
Speaker 1: was my Majesty, the Prince and Lord of the whole island.
• 0:23
Speaker 1: I had the lives of all my subjects at my
• 0:26
Speaker 1: absolute command. I could hang, draw, give liberty, and take
• 0:31
Speaker 1: it away, and no rebels among all my subjects. Then
• 0:37
Speaker 1: to see how like a king I dined too, all alone,
• 0:42
Speaker 1: attended by my servants. Paul, as if he had been
• 0:47
Speaker 1: my favorite, was the only person permitted to talk to me.
• 0:51
Speaker 1: My dog, who was now grown old and crazy and
• 0:55
Speaker 1: had found no species to multiply his kind upon, sat
• 0:59
Speaker 1: allways at my right hand, and two cats, one on
• 1:05
Speaker 1: one side of the table and one on the other,
• 1:08
Speaker 1: expecting now and then a bit from my hand as
• 1:10
Speaker 1: a mark of special favor. But these were not the
• 1:15
Speaker 1: two cats which I brought on shore at first, for
• 1:18
Speaker 1: they were both of them dead, and had been interred
• 1:22
Speaker 1: near my habitation by my own hand. But one of
• 1:25
Speaker 1: them having multiplied by I know not what kind of creature.
• 1:29
Speaker 1: There were two which I had preserved tame, and whereas
• 1:34
Speaker 1: the rest ran wild in the woods, and became indeed
• 1:36
Speaker 1: troublesome to me at last, for they would often come
• 1:40
Speaker 1: into my house and plunder me too, till at last
• 1:45
Speaker 1: I was obliged to shoot them, and did kill a
• 1:49
Speaker 1: great many. At length they left me with this attendance,
• 1:54
Speaker 1: and in this plentiful manner I lived. Neither could I
• 1:58
Speaker 1: be said to want anything but society, and of that
• 2:02
Speaker 1: some time after this I was likely to have too much.
• 2:08
Speaker 1: I was something impatient, as I have observed, to have
• 2:12
Speaker 1: the use of my boat, though very loath to run
• 2:16
Speaker 1: any more hazards. And therefore sometimes I sat contriving ways
• 2:20
Speaker 1: to get her about the island, and at other times
• 2:24
Speaker 1: I sat myself down, contented enough without her. But I
• 2:29
Speaker 1: had a strange uneasiness in my mind to go down
• 2:32
Speaker 1: to the point of the island. Where As I have
• 2:35
Speaker 1: said in my last ramble, I went up the hill
• 2:38
Speaker 1: to see how the shore lay and how the current set,
• 2:41
Speaker 1: that I might see what I had to do. This
• 2:44
Speaker 1: inclination increased upon me every day, and at length I
• 2:48
Speaker 1: resolved to travel thither by land, following the edge of
• 2:53
Speaker 1: the shore. I did so, But had anyone in England
• 2:57
Speaker 1: met such a man as I was it might either
• 3:00
Speaker 1: have frightened him or raised a great deal of laughter.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: And as I frequently stood still to look at myself,
• 3:08
Speaker 1: I could not but smile at the notion of my
• 3:10
Speaker 1: traveling through Yorkshire with such an ecuipage, and in such
• 3:15
Speaker 1: a dress. Be pleased to take a sketch of my
• 3:20
Speaker 1: figure as follows. I had a great, high, shapeless cap
• 3:25
Speaker 1: made of a goat skin, with a flap hanging down behind,
• 3:29
Speaker 1: as well to keep the sun from me as to
• 3:32
Speaker 1: shoot the rain off from running into my neck, nothing
• 3:36
Speaker 1: being hurtful in these climates, as the rain might be
• 3:39
Speaker 1: upon the flesh under the clothes. I had a short
• 3:44
Speaker 1: jacket of goat skin, the skirts coming down to about
• 3:48
Speaker 1: the middle of the thighs, and a pair of open
• 3:50
Speaker 1: knee breeches of the same. The breeches were made of
• 3:55
Speaker 1: the skin of an old he goat, whose hair hung
• 3:58
Speaker 1: down such a length on either side like pantaloons, it
• 4:02
Speaker 1: reached to the middle of my legs. Stockings and shoes
• 4:06
Speaker 1: I had none, but had made me a pair of
• 4:09
Speaker 1: somethings I scarce know what to call them, like buskins,
• 4:13
Speaker 1: to flap over my legs and lace on either side
• 4:16
Speaker 1: like spatter dashes, but of a most barber shape, as
• 4:21
Speaker 1: indeed were all the rest of my clothes. I had
• 4:24
Speaker 1: on a broad belt of goat skin dried, which I
• 4:28
Speaker 1: knew how to draw, together with two thongs of the
• 4:32
Speaker 1: same instead of buckles, and in a kind of a frog.
• 4:36
Speaker 1: On either side of this, instead of a sword and dagger,
• 4:40
Speaker 1: hung a little saw in a hatchet, one on one
• 4:43
Speaker 1: side and one on the other. I had another belt,
• 4:47
Speaker 1: not so broad, and fastened it in the same manner,
• 4:51
Speaker 1: which hung over my shoulder, and at the end of it,
• 4:54
Speaker 1: under my left arm, hung two pouches, both made of
• 4:58
Speaker 1: goat's skin, two in one of which hung my powder,
• 5:02
Speaker 1: and in the other my shot. At my back I
• 5:06
Speaker 1: carried my basket, and on my shoulder my gun, and
• 5:11
Speaker 1: over my head a great clumsy, ugly goat skin umbrella,
• 5:16
Speaker 1: but which after all was the most necessary thing I
• 5:19
Speaker 1: had about me next to my gun. As for my face,
• 5:24
Speaker 1: the color of it was really not so mulatto like
• 5:28
Speaker 1: as one might expect from a man not at all
• 5:31
Speaker 1: careful of it, and living within nine or ten degrees
• 5:35
Speaker 1: of the equinox. My beard I had once suffered to
• 5:39
Speaker 1: grow till it was about a quarter of a yard long,
• 5:42
Speaker 1: But as I had both scissors and razors sufficient, I
• 5:46
Speaker 1: had cut it pretty short except what grew on my
• 5:50
Speaker 1: upper lip, which I had trimmed into a large pair
• 5:54
Speaker 1: of Mahometan whiskers, such as I had seen worn by
• 5:59
Speaker 1: some Turks at Sali. For the Moors did not wear
• 6:03
Speaker 1: such though the Turks did. Of these mustachios or whiskers.
• 6:07
Speaker 1: I will not say they were long enough to hang
• 6:10
Speaker 1: my hat upon them, but they were of a length
• 6:13
Speaker 1: and shape monstrous enough, and such as in England would
• 6:17
Speaker 1: have passed for frightful. But all this is by the bye,
• 6:24
Speaker 1: for as to my figure, I had so few to
• 6:28
Speaker 1: observe me that it was of no manner of consequence.
• 6:31
Speaker 1: So I say no more of that. In this kind
• 6:35
Speaker 1: of dress, I went my new journey, and was out
• 6:38
Speaker 1: five or six days. I traveled first along the seashore,
• 6:42
Speaker 1: directly to the place where I first brought my boat
• 6:44
Speaker 1: to an anchor to get upon the rocks. And having
• 6:48
Speaker 1: no boat now to take care of, I went over
• 6:51
Speaker 1: the land a nearer way of the same height that
• 6:54
Speaker 1: I was upon before. When looking forward to the points
• 6:59
Speaker 1: of the rocks which which lay out, and which I
• 7:02
Speaker 1: was obliged to double with my boat. As is said above,
• 7:06
Speaker 1: I was surprised to see the sea all smooth and quiet,
• 7:11
Speaker 1: no rippling, no motion, no current anymore than in other places.
• 7:18
Speaker 1: I was at a strange loss to understand this, and
• 7:21
Speaker 1: resolved to spend some time in the observing of it,
• 7:25
Speaker 1: to see if nothing from the sets of the tide
• 7:27
Speaker 1: had occasioned it. But I was presently convinced how it was.
• 7:33
Speaker 1: That is that the tide of ebbsetting from the west
• 7:37
Speaker 1: and joining with the current of waters from some great
• 7:41
Speaker 1: river on the shore, must be the occasion for this current,
• 7:46
Speaker 1: and that according as the wind blew more forcibly from
• 7:49
Speaker 1: the west or from the north, this current came nearer
• 7:54
Speaker 1: or went farther from the shore. For waiting thereabouts till
• 7:58
Speaker 1: evening I went up to the rock again, and then
• 8:01
Speaker 1: the tide of Ebb being made, I plainly saw the
• 8:04
Speaker 1: current again as before, only that it ran farther off,
• 8:09
Speaker 1: being near half a league from the shore, whereas in
• 8:13
Speaker 1: my case it set close upon the shore and hurried
• 8:16
Speaker 1: me and my canoe along with it, which at another
• 8:19
Speaker 1: time it would not have done. This observation convinced me
• 8:24
Speaker 1: that I had nothing to do but to observe the
• 8:27
Speaker 1: ebbing and the flowing of the tide, and I might
• 8:29
Speaker 1: very easily bring my boat about the island again. But
• 8:33
Speaker 1: when I began to think of putting it in practice,
• 8:37
Speaker 1: I had such a terror upon my spirits at the
• 8:40
Speaker 1: remembrance of the danger I had been in, that I
• 8:42
Speaker 1: could not think of it again with any patience. But
• 8:45
Speaker 1: on the contrary, I took up another resolution, which was
• 8:49
Speaker 1: more safe, though more laborious, And this was that I
• 8:53
Speaker 1: would build, or rather make me another periagua or canoe,
• 8:58
Speaker 1: and so have won for one side of the island
• 9:02
Speaker 1: and one for the other. You are to understand that
• 9:06
Speaker 1: now I had, as I may call it, two plantations
• 9:10
Speaker 1: in the island. One my little fortification or tent, with
• 9:14
Speaker 1: the wall about it under the rock, with the cave
• 9:18
Speaker 1: behind me, which by this time I had enlarged into
• 9:21
Speaker 1: several apartments or caves, one within another. One of these,
• 9:26
Speaker 1: which was the driest and largest, and had a door
• 9:30
Speaker 1: out beyond my wall or fortification, that is to say,
• 9:33
Speaker 1: beyond where my wall joined to the rock, was all
• 9:37
Speaker 1: filled up with the large earthen pots of which I
• 9:40
Speaker 1: have given an account, and with fourteen or fifteen great baskets,
• 9:46
Speaker 1: which would hold five or six bushels each. Where I
• 9:49
Speaker 1: laid up my stores of provisions, especially my corn, some
• 9:53
Speaker 1: in the ear cut off short from the straw, and
• 9:56
Speaker 1: the other rubbed out with my hand. As for my wall,
• 10:02
Speaker 1: made as before with long steaks or piles, these piles
• 10:06
Speaker 1: grew all like trees, and were by this time grown
• 10:09
Speaker 1: so big and spread so very much, that there was
• 10:12
Speaker 1: not the least appearance to any one's view of any
• 10:16
Speaker 1: habitation behind them near this dwelling of mine. But a
• 10:21
Speaker 1: little farther within the land, and upon lower ground, lay
• 10:25
Speaker 1: my two pieces of corn land, which I kept duly
• 10:29
Speaker 1: cultivated and sowed, and which duly yielded me their harvest
• 10:34
Speaker 1: in its season. And whenever I had occasion for more corn,
• 10:38
Speaker 1: I had more land adjoining as fit as that. Besides this,
• 10:43
Speaker 1: I now had my country seat, and I had now
• 10:47
Speaker 1: a tolerable plantation there also. For first, I had my
• 10:51
Speaker 1: little bower, as I called it, which I kept in repair,
• 10:56
Speaker 1: that is to say, I kept the hedge which encircled
• 10:58
Speaker 1: it constantly fitted up to its usual height, the latter
• 11:04
Speaker 1: always standing on the inside. I kept the trees, which
• 11:09
Speaker 1: at first were no more than steaks, but were now
• 11:13
Speaker 1: grown very firm and tall, always cut so that they
• 11:18
Speaker 1: might spread and grow thick and wild, and make the
• 11:21
Speaker 1: more agreeable shade, which they did effectually to my mind.
• 11:27
Speaker 1: In the middle of this, I had my tent, always standing,
• 11:30
Speaker 1: being a piece of a sail, spread over poles, set
• 11:33
Speaker 1: up for that purpose, and which never wanted any repair
• 11:38
Speaker 1: or renewing. And under this I made me a squab
• 11:42
Speaker 1: or couch, with the skins of the creatures I had killed,
• 11:46
Speaker 1: and with other soft things, and a blanket laid on them,
• 11:49
Speaker 1: such as belonged to our sea bedding, which I had
• 11:52
Speaker 1: saved in a great watchcoat to cover me. And here,
• 11:58
Speaker 1: whenever I had occasion to be absent from my chief seat,
• 12:01
Speaker 1: I took up my country habitation. Adjoining to this, I
• 12:06
Speaker 1: had my enclosures for my cattle, that is to say,
• 12:09
Speaker 1: my goats, and I had taken an inconceivable deal of
• 12:13
Speaker 1: pains to fence and enclose this ground. I was so
• 12:18
Speaker 1: anxious to see it kept entire lest the goats should
• 12:21
Speaker 1: break through, that I never left off till with infinite labor,
• 12:26
Speaker 1: I had stuck the outside of the hedge so full
• 12:29
Speaker 1: of small steaks, and so nearer one to another, that
• 12:33
Speaker 1: it was rather a pale than a hedge, and there
• 12:36
Speaker 1: was scarce room to put a hand through between them, which, afterwards,
• 12:42
Speaker 1: when these stakes grew, as they all did in the
• 12:45
Speaker 1: next rainy season, made the enclosure strong like a wall,
• 12:49
Speaker 1: indeed stronger than any wall. This will testify for me
• 12:54
Speaker 1: that I was not idle, and that I spared no
• 12:57
Speaker 1: pains to bring to pass whatever appeared necessary for my
• 13:01
Speaker 1: comfortable support. For I considered the keeping up a breed
• 13:06
Speaker 1: of tame creatures. Thus at my end would be a
• 13:09
Speaker 1: living magazine of flesh, milk, butter, and cheese for me
• 13:13
Speaker 1: as long as I lived in the place, if it
• 13:16
Speaker 1: were to be forty years, And that keeping them in
• 13:19
Speaker 1: my reach depended entirely upon my perfecting my enclosures to
• 13:24
Speaker 1: such a degree that I might be sure of keeping
• 13:27
Speaker 1: them together, which by this method indeed I so effectually
• 13:32
Speaker 1: secured that when these little steaks began to grow, I
• 13:36
Speaker 1: had planted them so very thick that I was forced
• 13:39
Speaker 1: to pull some of them up again. In this place,
• 13:43
Speaker 1: also I had my grapes growing, which I principally depended
• 13:47
Speaker 1: on for my winter store of raisins, and which I
• 13:50
Speaker 1: never failed to preserve very carefully as the best and
• 13:54
Speaker 1: most agreeable dainty of my whole diet. And indeed they
• 13:58
Speaker 1: were not only agreeable, but medicinal, wholesome, nourishing and refreshing
• 14:03
Speaker 1: to the last degree. As this was about halfway between
• 14:08
Speaker 1: my other habitation and the place where I had laid
• 14:11
Speaker 1: up my boat, I generally stayed and lay here in
• 14:14
Speaker 1: my way thither, for I used frequently to visit my boat,
• 14:20
Speaker 1: and I kept all things about or belonging to her,
• 14:23
Speaker 1: in very good order. Sometimes I went out in her
• 14:27
Speaker 1: to divert myself, but no more hazardous voyages would I
• 14:30
Speaker 1: go scarcely, ever, above a stone's cast or two from
• 14:34
Speaker 1: the shore. I was so apprehensive of being hurried out
• 14:38
Speaker 1: of my knowledge again by the currents, or winds, or
• 14:41
Speaker 1: any other accident. But now I come to a new
• 14:45
Speaker 1: scene of my life. It happened one day about noon,
• 14:50
Speaker 1: going towards my boat, I was exceedingly surprised with the
• 14:55
Speaker 1: print of a man's naked foot on the shore, which
• 14:59
Speaker 1: was very plain to be seen in the sand. I
• 15:03
Speaker 1: stood like one thunderstruck, or as if I had seen
• 15:08
Speaker 1: an apparition. I listened, I looked round me, but I
• 15:14
Speaker 1: could hear nothing nor see anything. I went up to
• 15:18
Speaker 1: a rising ground to look farther. I went up the
• 15:21
Speaker 1: shore and down the shore, but it was all one.
• 15:25
Speaker 1: I could see no other impression but that one. I
• 15:31
Speaker 1: went to it again to see if there were any more,
• 15:35
Speaker 1: and to observe if it might not be my fancy.
• 15:38
Speaker 1: But there was no room for that, for there was
• 15:42
Speaker 1: exactly the print of a foot toes heel, in every
• 15:47
Speaker 1: part of a foot. How it came thither I knew not,
• 15:53
Speaker 1: nor could I in the least imagine. But after innumerable
• 15:57
Speaker 1: fluttering thoughts, like a man perfectly confus used and out
• 16:00
Speaker 1: of myself, I came home to my fortification, not feeling,
• 16:05
Speaker 1: as we say the ground. I went on, but terrified
• 16:10
Speaker 1: to the last degree, looking behind me at every two
• 16:14
Speaker 1: or three steps, mistaking every bush and tree, and fancying
• 16:20
Speaker 1: every stump at a distance to be a man. Nor
• 16:24
Speaker 1: is it possible to describe how many various shapes my
• 16:28
Speaker 1: affrighted imagination represented things to me, how many wild ideas
• 16:33
Speaker 1: were found every moment in my fancy, and what strange,
• 16:37
Speaker 1: unaccountable whimsies came into my thoughts. By the way, when
• 16:42
Speaker 1: I came to my castle, for so I think I
• 16:45
Speaker 1: called it. Ever after this I fled into it like
• 16:49
Speaker 1: one pursued. Whether I went over by the latter as
• 16:53
Speaker 1: first contrived, or went in at the hole in the
• 16:56
Speaker 1: rock which I had called a door, I cannot remember no,
• 17:01
Speaker 1: nor could I remember the next morning, for never frightened
• 17:06
Speaker 1: hair fled to cover or fox to earth with more
• 17:10
Speaker 1: terror of mind than I to this retreat. I slept
• 17:16
Speaker 1: none that night. The farther I was from the occasion
• 17:21
Speaker 1: of my fright the greater my apprehensions were, which is
• 17:25
Speaker 1: something contrary to the nature of such things, and especially
• 17:29
Speaker 1: to the usual practice of all creatures in fear. But
• 17:33
Speaker 1: I was so embarrassed with my own frightful ideas of
• 17:38
Speaker 1: the thing that I formed nothing but dismal imaginations to myself,
• 17:43
Speaker 1: even though I was now a great way off. Sometimes
• 17:47
Speaker 1: I fancied it must be the devil, and reason joined
• 17:51
Speaker 1: in with me in this supposition, For how could any
• 17:54
Speaker 1: other thing in human shape come into the place? Where
• 17:59
Speaker 1: was the vessel that brought them? What marks were there
• 18:03
Speaker 1: of any other footstep? And how was it possible a
• 18:07
Speaker 1: man should come there? But then to think that Satan
• 18:11
Speaker 1: should take human shape upon him in such a place
• 18:15
Speaker 1: where there could be no manner of occasion for it,
• 18:18
Speaker 1: but to leave the print of his foot behind him,
• 18:21
Speaker 1: And that even for no purpose, too, for he could
• 18:25
Speaker 1: not be sure I should see it. This was an amusement.
• 18:29
Speaker 1: The other way, I considered that the devil might have
• 18:33
Speaker 1: found out abundance of other ways to have terrified me
• 18:37
Speaker 1: than this of this single print of a foot, that
• 18:41
Speaker 1: as I lived quite on the other side of the island,
• 18:44
Speaker 1: he would never have been so simple as to leave
• 18:46
Speaker 1: a mark in a place where it was ten thousand
• 18:49
Speaker 1: to one whether I should ever see it or not,
• 18:53
Speaker 1: and in the sand, too, which the first surge of
• 18:56
Speaker 1: the sea upon a high wind would have defaced entirely.
• 19:00
Speaker 1: All this seemed inconsistent with the thing itself, and with
• 19:05
Speaker 1: all the notions that we usually entertain of the subtlety
• 19:09
Speaker 1: of the devil. Abundance of such things as these assisted
• 19:14
Speaker 1: to argue me out of all apprehensions of its being
• 19:17
Speaker 1: the devil. And I presently concluded then that it must
• 19:21
Speaker 1: be some more dangerous creature, that is, that it must
• 19:25
Speaker 1: be some of the savages of the mainland opposite, who
• 19:28
Speaker 1: had wandered out to sea in their canoes, and either
• 19:32
Speaker 1: driven by the currents or by contrary winds, had made
• 19:35
Speaker 1: the island and had been on shore, but were now
• 19:39
Speaker 1: gone away to see, being as loath perhaps to have
• 19:43
Speaker 1: stayed in this desolate island as I would have been
• 19:46
Speaker 1: to have had them. While these reflections were rolling in
• 19:51
Speaker 1: my mind, I was very thankful in my thoughts that
• 19:54
Speaker 1: I was so happy as not to be thereabouts at
• 19:57
Speaker 1: that time, or that they did not see my boat,
• 20:01
Speaker 1: by which they would have concluded that some inhabitants had
• 20:05
Speaker 1: been in the place and perhaps have searched farther from me.
• 20:10
Speaker 1: Then terrible thoughts racked my imagination about their having found
• 20:14
Speaker 1: out my boat, and that there were people here, and
• 20:18
Speaker 1: that if so, I should certainly have them come again
• 20:22
Speaker 1: in greater numbers and devour me. That if it should
• 20:26
Speaker 1: happen that they should not find me, yet, they would
• 20:30
Speaker 1: find my enclosure, destroy all my corn, and carry away
• 20:33
Speaker 1: all my flock of tame goats, and I should perish
• 20:37
Speaker 1: at last for mere want. Thus my fear banished all
• 20:43
Speaker 1: my religious hope, all that former confidence in God which
• 20:47
Speaker 1: was founded upon such wonderful experience as I had had
• 20:51
Speaker 1: of His goodness, As if he that had fed me
• 20:54
Speaker 1: by miracle, hitherto could not preserve by his power the
• 20:59
Speaker 1: provision which he had made for me by his goodness.
• 21:03
Speaker 1: I reproached myself, with my laziness, that would not sow
• 21:07
Speaker 1: any more corn one year than would just serve me
• 21:10
Speaker 1: till the next season, as if no accident could intervene
• 21:14
Speaker 1: to prevent my enjoying the crop that was upon the ground.
• 21:18
Speaker 1: And this I thought so just a reproof that I
• 21:21
Speaker 1: resolved for the future to have two or three years
• 21:25
Speaker 1: corn beforehand, so that whatever might come I might not
• 21:29
Speaker 1: perish for want of bread. A strange, a checker work
• 21:34
Speaker 1: of providence is the life of a man. And by
• 21:37
Speaker 1: what secret different springs are the affections hurried about as
• 21:43
Speaker 1: different circumstances present. Today we love what tomorrow we hate.
• 21:49
Speaker 1: Today we seek what tomorrow we shun. Today we desire
• 21:54
Speaker 1: what tomorrow we fear, nay even tremble at the apprehensions
• 21:59
Speaker 1: of This was exemplified in me at this time in
• 22:04
Speaker 1: the most lively manner imaginable, for I, whose only affliction
• 22:09
Speaker 1: was that I seemed banished from human society, that I
• 22:12
Speaker 1: was alone circumscribed by the boundless ocean, cut off from mankind,
• 22:18
Speaker 1: and condemned to what I call silent life, that I
• 22:23
Speaker 1: was as one whom Heaven thought not worthy to be
• 22:26
Speaker 1: numbered among the living, or to appear among the rest
• 22:30
Speaker 1: of his creatures. That to have seen one of my
• 22:34
Speaker 1: own species would have seemed to me a raising me
• 22:39
Speaker 1: from death to life, and the greatest blessing that Heaven itself,
• 22:43
Speaker 1: next to the supreme blessing of salvation could bestow. I
• 22:48
Speaker 1: say that I should now tremble at the very apprehensions
• 22:52
Speaker 1: of seeing a man, and was ready to sink into
• 22:56
Speaker 1: the ground at but the shadow or silent appearance of
• 22:59
Speaker 1: a man having at his foot in the island. Such
• 23:04
Speaker 1: is the uneven state of human life, and it afforded
• 23:09
Speaker 1: me a great many curious speculations. Afterwards, when I had
• 23:13
Speaker 1: a little recovered my first surprise, I considered that this
• 23:18
Speaker 1: was the station of life. The infinitely wise and good
• 23:21
Speaker 1: providence of God had determined for me. That, as I
• 23:26
Speaker 1: could not foresee what the ends of divine wisdom might
• 23:30
Speaker 1: be in all this, so I was not to dispute
• 23:33
Speaker 1: his sovereignty, who, as I was his creature, had an
• 23:39
Speaker 1: undoubted right by creation to govern and dispose of me
• 23:43
Speaker 1: absolutely as he thought fit, and who, as I was
• 23:48
Speaker 1: a creature that had offended him, had likewise a judicial
• 23:52
Speaker 1: right to condemn me to what punishment he thought fit,
• 23:56
Speaker 1: and that it was my part to bear his indignation
• 24:02
Speaker 1: because I had sinned against him. I then reflected that
• 24:07
Speaker 1: as God, who was not only righteous but omnipotent, had
• 24:11
Speaker 1: thought fit thus to punish and afflict me, so he
• 24:16
Speaker 1: was able to deliver me, that if he did not
• 24:20
Speaker 1: think fit to do so, it was my unquestioned duty
• 24:24
Speaker 1: to resign myself absolutely and entirely to his will. And
• 24:29
Speaker 1: on the other hand, it was my duty also to
• 24:32
Speaker 1: hope in him, pray to him, and quietly to attend
• 24:37
Speaker 1: to the dictates and directions of his daily providence. These
• 24:42
Speaker 1: thoughts took up many hours of mine days, nay, I
• 24:47
Speaker 1: may say weeks and months. And one particular effect of
• 24:51
Speaker 1: my cogitations on this occasion I cannot omit. One morning, early,
• 24:57
Speaker 1: lying in my bed and filled with thoughts about my
• 25:00
Speaker 1: danger from the appearances of savages. I found it discomposed
• 25:06
Speaker 1: me very much, upon which these words of scripture came
• 25:10
Speaker 1: into my thoughts. Call upon me in the day of trouble,
• 25:15
Speaker 1: and I will deliver Thee, and thou shalt glorify me.
• 25:21
Speaker 1: Upon this, rising cheerfully out of my bed, my heart
• 25:25
Speaker 1: was not only comforted, but I was guided and encouraged
• 25:28
Speaker 1: to pray earnestly to God for deliverance. When I had
• 25:33
Speaker 1: done praying, I took up my Bible, and, opening it
• 25:37
Speaker 1: to read, the first words that presented to me were,
• 25:42
Speaker 1: wait on the Lord, and be of good cheer, and
• 25:46
Speaker 1: He shall strengthen thy heart. Wait, I say, on the Lord.
• 25:52
Speaker 1: It is impossible to express the comfort this gave me.
• 25:56
Speaker 1: In answer, I thankfully laid down the book and was
• 26:00
Speaker 1: no more said, at least on that occasion. In the
• 26:05
Speaker 1: middle of these cogitations, apprehensions, and reflections, it came into
• 26:10
Speaker 1: my thoughts one day that all this might be a
• 26:15
Speaker 1: mere chimera of my own, and that this foot might
• 26:19
Speaker 1: be the print of my own foot when I came
• 26:22
Speaker 1: on shore from my boat. This cheered me up a
• 26:25
Speaker 1: little too, and I began to persuade myself it was
• 26:29
Speaker 1: all a delusion, that it was nothing else but my
• 26:32
Speaker 1: own foot, and why might I not come that way
• 26:35
Speaker 1: from the boat as well? As I was going that
• 26:38
Speaker 1: way to the boat. Again. I considered also that I
• 26:43
Speaker 1: could by no means tell for certain where I had
• 26:46
Speaker 1: trod and where I had not, and that if at
• 26:51
Speaker 1: last this was the only print of my own foot,
• 26:55
Speaker 1: I had played the part of those fools who tried
• 26:59
Speaker 1: to make stories of specters and apparitions, and then are
• 27:03
Speaker 1: frightened at them more than anybody. Now I began to
• 27:08
Speaker 1: take courage and to peep abroad again, for I had
• 27:11
Speaker 1: not stirred out of my castle for three days and nights,
• 27:15
Speaker 1: so that I began to starve for provisions, for I
• 27:19
Speaker 1: had little or nothing with indoors, but some barley cakes
• 27:22
Speaker 1: and water. Then I knew that my goats wanted to
• 27:26
Speaker 1: be milked too, which usually was my evening diversion, and
• 27:30
Speaker 1: the poor creatures were in great pain and inconvenience for
• 27:33
Speaker 1: want of it, and indeed it almost spoiled some of them,
• 27:37
Speaker 1: and almost dried up their milk. Encouraging myself. Therefore, with
• 27:41
Speaker 1: the belief that this was nothing but the print of
• 27:44
Speaker 1: one of my own feet, and that I might be
• 27:47
Speaker 1: truly said to start at my own shadow, I began
• 27:51
Speaker 1: to go abroad again and went to my country house
• 27:54
Speaker 1: to milk my flock. But to see with what fear
• 27:57
Speaker 1: I went forward how often I looked behind me, how
• 28:01
Speaker 1: I was ready every now and then to lay down
• 28:03
Speaker 1: my basket and run for my life. It would have
• 28:06
Speaker 1: made anyone have thought I was haunted with an evil conscience,
• 28:10
Speaker 1: or that I had been lately most terribly frightened, And
• 28:15
Speaker 1: so indeed I had. However, I went down thus two
• 28:20
Speaker 1: or three days, and having seen nothing, I began to
• 28:23
Speaker 1: be a little bolder, and to think there was really
• 28:27
Speaker 1: nothing in it but my own imagination. But I could
• 28:31
Speaker 1: not persuade myself fully of this till I should go
• 28:35
Speaker 1: down to the shore again and see this print of
• 28:37
Speaker 1: a foot, and measure it by my own and see
• 28:40
Speaker 1: if there was any similitude or fitness, that I might
• 28:44
Speaker 1: be assured that it was my own foot. But when
• 28:48
Speaker 1: I came to the place first, it appeared evidently to
• 28:51
Speaker 1: me that when I laid up my boat, I could
• 28:54
Speaker 1: not possibly be on shore anywhere thereabouts. Secondly, when I
• 29:00
Speaker 1: came to measure the mark with my own foot, I
• 29:04
Speaker 1: found my foot not so large by a great deal.
• 29:07
Speaker 1: Both these things filled my head with new imaginations, and
• 29:11
Speaker 1: gave me the vapors again to the highest degree, so
• 29:15
Speaker 1: that I shook with cold like one in an ague,
• 29:18
Speaker 1: and I went home again, filled with the belief that
• 29:21
Speaker 1: some man or men had been on shore there, or
• 29:25
Speaker 1: in short, that the island was inhabited, and I might
• 29:29
Speaker 1: be surprised before I was aware. And what course to
• 29:32
Speaker 1: take for my security I knew, not, oh, what ridiculous
• 29:39
Speaker 1: resolutions men take when possessed with fear. It deprives them
• 29:44
Speaker 1: of the use of those means which reason offers for
• 29:47
Speaker 1: their relief. The first thing I proposed to myself was
• 29:51
Speaker 1: to throw down my enclosures and turn all my tame
• 29:55
Speaker 1: cattle wild into the woods, lest the enemy should find them,
• 29:59
Speaker 1: and then frequent the island in prospect of the same
• 30:03
Speaker 1: or the like booty. Then the simple thing of digging
• 30:08
Speaker 1: up my two cornfields, lest they should find such a
• 30:12
Speaker 1: grain there, and still be prompted to frequent the island.
• 30:17
Speaker 1: Then to demolish my bower and tent, that they might
• 30:20
Speaker 1: not see any vestiges of habitation, and be prompted to
• 30:24
Speaker 1: look farther in order to find out the person's inhabiting.
• 30:31
Speaker 1: These were the subject of the first night's cogitations. After
• 30:34
Speaker 1: I was home again, while the apprehensions which had so
• 30:37
Speaker 1: overrun my mind were fresh upon me, and my head
• 30:41
Speaker 1: was full of vapors. Thus fear of danger is ten
• 30:45
Speaker 1: thousand times more terrifying than danger itself when apparent to
• 30:50
Speaker 1: the eyes. And we find the burden of anxiety greater
• 30:54
Speaker 1: by much than the evil which we are anxious about.
• 30:59
Speaker 1: And what was worse than all this, I had not
• 31:02
Speaker 1: that relief in this trouble that from the resignation I
• 31:06
Speaker 1: used to practice I hoped to have. I looked. I
• 31:09
Speaker 1: thought like Saul, who complained not only that the Philistines
• 31:14
Speaker 1: were upon him, but that God had forsaken him. For
• 31:18
Speaker 1: I did not now take due ways to compose my
• 31:22
Speaker 1: mind by crying to God in my distress and resting
• 31:26
Speaker 1: upon his providence as I had done before for my
• 31:29
Speaker 1: defense and deliverance, which if I had done, I had
• 31:34
Speaker 1: at least been more cheerfully supported under this new surprise,
• 31:39
Speaker 1: and perhaps carried through it with more resolution. This confusion
• 31:46
Speaker 1: of my thoughts kept me awake all night. But in
• 31:49
Speaker 1: the morning I fell asleep, and, having by the amusement
• 31:52
Speaker 1: of my mind, been as it were, tired and my
• 31:56
Speaker 1: spirits exhausted, I slept very soundly and waked much better
• 32:01
Speaker 1: composed than I had ever been before. And now I
• 32:06
Speaker 1: began to think sedately, and upon debate with myself, I
• 32:12
Speaker 1: concluded that this island, which was so exceedingly pleasant, fruitful,
• 32:17
Speaker 1: and no farther from the mainland than as I had seen,
• 32:21
Speaker 1: was not so entirely abandoned, as I might imagine. That
• 32:25
Speaker 1: although there were no stated inhabitants who lived on the
• 32:29
Speaker 1: spot yet, that there might sometimes come boats off from
• 32:34
Speaker 1: the shore, who, either with design or perhaps never, but
• 32:38
Speaker 1: when they were driven by cross winds, might come to
• 32:41
Speaker 1: this place. That I had lived there fifteen years now
• 32:46
Speaker 1: and not met with the least shadow or figure of
• 32:49
Speaker 1: any people yet, and that if at any time they
• 32:53
Speaker 1: should be driven here, it was probable they went away
• 32:56
Speaker 1: again as soon as ever they could, seeing that they
• 33:01
Speaker 1: had never thought fit to fix here upon any occasion.
• 33:06
Speaker 1: That the most I could suggest any danger from was
• 33:10
Speaker 1: from any casual accidental landing of straggling people from the
• 33:14
Speaker 1: main who, as it was likely, if they were driven hither,
• 33:20
Speaker 1: were here against their wills. So they made no stay here,
• 33:25
Speaker 1: but went off again with all possible speed, seldom staying
• 33:29
Speaker 1: one night on shore lest they should not have the
• 33:32
Speaker 1: help of the tides and daylight back again. And that
• 33:35
Speaker 1: therefore I had nothing to do but to consider of
• 33:39
Speaker 1: some safe retreat in case I should see any savages
• 33:43
Speaker 1: land upon the spot. Now I began sorely to repent
• 33:48
Speaker 1: that I had dug my cave so large as to
• 33:50
Speaker 1: bring a door through again, which door, as I said,
• 33:53
Speaker 1: came out beyond where my fortification joined to the rock.
• 33:58
Speaker 1: Upon maturely considering them, therefore, I resolved to draw me
• 34:02
Speaker 1: a second fortification, in the manner of a semicircle, at
• 34:06
Speaker 1: a distance from my wall, just where I had planted
• 34:10
Speaker 1: a double row of trees about twelve years before, of
• 34:13
Speaker 1: which I made mentioned. These trees, having been planted so
• 34:17
Speaker 1: thick before, they wanted but few piles to be driven
• 34:21
Speaker 1: between them, that they might be thicker and stronger, and
• 34:24
Speaker 1: my wall would be soon finished. So that I now
• 34:28
Speaker 1: had a double wall, and my outer wall was thickened
• 34:32
Speaker 1: with pieces of timber, old cables and everything I could
• 34:35
Speaker 1: think of to make it strong, having in its seven
• 34:39
Speaker 1: little holes about as big as I might put my
• 34:42
Speaker 1: arm out at In the inside of this I thickened
• 34:46
Speaker 1: my wall to about ten feet thick, with continually bringing
• 34:51
Speaker 1: earth out of my cave and laying it at the
• 34:54
Speaker 1: foot of the wall, and walking upon it, and through
• 34:57
Speaker 1: the seven holes I contrived to plant the muskets, of
• 35:01
Speaker 1: which I took notice that I had got seven on
• 35:03
Speaker 1: shore out of the ship. These I planted like my cannon,
• 35:08
Speaker 1: and I fitted them into frames that held them like
• 35:11
Speaker 1: a carriage, so that I could fire all the seven
• 35:14
Speaker 1: guns in two minutes time. This wall I was many
• 35:19
Speaker 1: a weary month in finishing, and yet never thought myself
• 35:23
Speaker 1: safe till it was done. When this was done, I
• 35:28
Speaker 1: stuck all the ground without my wall, for a great
• 35:31
Speaker 1: length everyway as full with steaks or sticks of the
• 35:34
Speaker 1: ossier like wood which I had found so apt to grow,
• 35:38
Speaker 1: as they could well stand, insomuch that I believe I
• 35:43
Speaker 1: might set in near twenty thousand of them, leaving a
• 35:47
Speaker 1: pretty large space between them and my wall, that I
• 35:50
Speaker 1: might have room to see my enemy, and they might
• 35:54
Speaker 1: have no shelter from the young trees if they attempted
• 35:57
Speaker 1: to approach my outer wall. Thus, in two years time
• 36:02
Speaker 1: I had a thick grove, and in five or six
• 36:05
Speaker 1: years time I had a wood before my dwelling, growing
• 36:09
Speaker 1: so monstrously thick and strong that it was indeed perfectly impassable,
• 36:14
Speaker 1: and no men of what kindsoever could ever imagine that
• 36:19
Speaker 1: there was anything beyond it, much less a habitation. As
• 36:24
Speaker 1: for the way which I proposed to myself to go
• 36:27
Speaker 1: in and out, for I left no avenue, it was
• 36:31
Speaker 1: by setting two ladders, one to a part of the
• 36:34
Speaker 1: rock which was low, and then broke in, and left
• 36:39
Speaker 1: room to place another ladder upon that, so that when
• 36:42
Speaker 1: the two ladders were taken down, no man living could
• 36:46
Speaker 1: come down to me without doing himself mischief. And if
• 36:50
Speaker 1: they had come down, they were still on the outside
• 36:54
Speaker 1: of my outer wall. Thus I took all the measures
• 37:00
Speaker 1: human prudence could suggest for my own preservation, and it
• 37:04
Speaker 1: will be seen at length that they were not altogether
• 37:08
Speaker 1: without just reason, though I foresaw nothing at that time
• 37:14
Speaker 1: more than my mere fear suggested to me. End of
• 37:22
  Speaker 1: Chapter eleven.
