Latest / Richard Randall Show / Sherriff Mikesell on Cooperation with ICE
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Let's go ahead and talk with a person who knows
- 0:03Speaker 1: about law enforcement cooperating with ICE, and that doesn't always
- 0:07Speaker 1: happen here in Colorado or in Minnesota. It looks like
- 0:11Speaker 1: we're going to see more of that, according to Tom
- 0:13Speaker 1: Holman the other day, saying that you're gonna have more
- 0:15Speaker 1: cooperation up there in Minnesota. David, I've got music going
- 0:19Speaker 1: on here. We're going to talk with Sheriff Jason Mike
- 0:23Speaker 1: Sel And it wasn't long ago. I remember you were
- 0:25Speaker 1: meeting with Jeff Crank and Sheriff Roiball talking about cooperating
- 0:30Speaker 1: with ICE. We'll talk a little bit about the legislature,
- 0:32Speaker 1: but can you talk first about you know, are there
- 0:35Speaker 1: are you thinking that there's gonna be changes among other
- 0:38Speaker 1: sheriffs who haven't collaborated in the past that might be
- 0:42Speaker 1: doing it now because people now understand they didn't have
- 0:44Speaker 1: to be out there in those neighborhoods looking for some
- 0:46Speaker 1: of these criminals. They could have just picked them up
- 0:48Speaker 1: at the jail before they were released.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Well, Richard Dints, I'm glad to be back on your
- 0:54Speaker 2: show for the first thing, but I will tell you
- 0:57Speaker 2: I think that's one of the bigger issues is picking
- 1:00Speaker 2: people up in a secure environment from jails, from prisons.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Sheriffs aren't going to get involved at this point because
- 1:07Speaker 2: really the state has still has a legislation that says
- 1:09Speaker 2: we can't get involved. But prior to all this, if
- 1:13Speaker 2: I had somebody that was a severe threat, somebody that's
- 1:16Speaker 2: assaulted a woman, or somebody that has an attempted homicide suspect,
- 1:20Speaker 2: and they're arrested, they're gone through the conviction process, they're
- 1:24Speaker 2: put in my jail, I would then transfer them to ICE.
- 1:27Speaker 2: We used to do that with the Department of Correction.
- 1:29Speaker 2: That was back when we actually had very little crime
- 1:30Speaker 2: in the state of Colorado. We were one of the
- 1:32Speaker 2: lowest crime rates in the United States. Since all these
- 1:34Speaker 2: changes have gone to effect, what's really happened is that
- 1:38Speaker 2: you've seen a massive rise in crime in Colorado. And
- 1:42Speaker 2: on the other side of it too for sheriffs. We're
- 1:45Speaker 2: watching people being pushed back into communities where ICE now
- 1:48Speaker 2: has to go after them, forcing them to work within communities,
- 1:51Speaker 2: which puts a community at resk too, because ICE is
- 1:55Speaker 2: going to have to fulfill their duty to arrest these suspects. Well,
- 1:58Speaker 2: these suspects just aren't going to go willingly. Now on
- 2:01Speaker 2: top of it, you've got all kinds of folks pushing
- 2:03Speaker 2: in to try to stop people from being arrested. Both
- 2:05Speaker 2: they don't understand and that these are criminals that they're
- 2:08Speaker 2: trying to arrest that really should be in our prison
- 2:10Speaker 2: system or in our jail system and then release straight
- 2:13Speaker 2: to ice where we wouldn't have them in communities.
- 2:15Speaker 1: You know, I look at what is going on up
- 2:17Speaker 1: to the legislature, and it just seems that gun bill
- 2:20Speaker 1: just went through, but they're talking about you know, qualified immunity, etc.
- 2:24Speaker 1: For people in law enforcement and others. Do you expect
- 2:27Speaker 1: Sheriff Michael to get any help whatsoever with a Democrat
- 2:32Speaker 1: dominated House and Senate here in Colorado and a governor
- 2:35Speaker 1: like this, or we just have to deal with it
- 2:37Speaker 1: and hope that we can win some elections going forward.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Well, I think we have to hope to win some
- 2:41Speaker 2: elections because right now you've had a multitude of years
- 2:45Speaker 2: of just failure at every level, and the problem is
- 2:47Speaker 2: the leadership trying to have them understand that we in
- 2:50Speaker 2: law enforcement need to be able to do our jobs
- 2:53Speaker 2: without the politics in play. When law enforcement officers have
- 2:57Speaker 2: gone to the state of Colorado and said, hey, the
- 2:59Speaker 2: immigrant law that you're pushing is not smart, then why
- 3:03Speaker 2: would they just go the opposite direction and do it anyways.
- 3:06Speaker 2: So there's just a contempt for law enforcement across the
- 3:08Speaker 2: state within the legislative body, and not all Democrat legislators,
- 3:13Speaker 2: but the very progressive left is what's causing these issues.
- 3:18Speaker 1: You know, I'm looking at story from the other day
- 3:20Speaker 1: Colorado legislator's advanced proposal allowing lawsuits against federal immigration agents,
- 3:25Speaker 1: which is not you, but you've collaborated with this. Actually
- 3:28Speaker 1: you're a veteran yourself as well. But when it comes
- 3:30Speaker 1: to allowing lawsuits and all the rest of this, it
- 3:33Speaker 1: seems to me that you have a chilling effect on
- 3:35Speaker 1: people in law enforcement because they don't want to have
- 3:38Speaker 1: to lose their pension, their home and all of the rest.
- 3:41Speaker 1: And yet, you know, I would not have faith in
- 3:44Speaker 1: Democrats and a lot of liberal juries on this sort
- 3:46Speaker 1: of thing. Your thoughts, Sheriff Michael.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Well, I don't because I've been through eight years of
- 3:52Speaker 2: fighting that battle, right, and that's something I think that's
- 3:56Speaker 2: hard for law enforcement swear to deal with because if
- 3:59Speaker 2: you're a sheriff, you only have eight years for most counties.
- 4:02Speaker 2: So within that whole time frame, you're under lawsuit the
- 4:05Speaker 2: whole time by the ACLU for attempting to do your duty,
- 4:08Speaker 2: and that's protect citizens. And for normal law enforcement officers,
- 4:12Speaker 2: the police officers, the deputy sheriffs, you know, they make
- 4:17Speaker 2: a little bit more of what the state wants to
- 4:19Speaker 2: hit you with of a fifty thousand dollars fine, and
- 4:21Speaker 2: that fifty thousand dollars fine goes to a fund that
- 4:25Speaker 2: is used to be the law or basically the legal
- 4:30Speaker 2: defense fund for illegal immigration suspects in the state of Colorado.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Oh stop, sheriff, you swear to God, could you just
- 4:37Speaker 1: repeat that. I'm not trying to be dramatic here, but
- 4:41Speaker 1: I want to just to understand how manipulated these people
- 4:44Speaker 1: are and what they think they can do and get
- 4:46Speaker 1: away with. Could you say that again.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah, So, in the state of Colorado, they're going to
- 4:52Speaker 2: sue a law enforcement agency or a law enforcement officer.
- 4:56Speaker 2: The fee or the fifty thousand dollars fine that can
- 4:59Speaker 2: be weighted against the law enforcement officer is then recovered
- 5:03Speaker 2: and then given back to a state fund which is
- 5:06Speaker 2: for the legal defense of illegal immigration.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Unbelievable, and if you would mention again with the average
- 5:13Speaker 1: deputy or you know law enforcement person out there, deputies, whatever,
- 5:17Speaker 1: that would be almost a big chunk of what they
- 5:20Speaker 1: would be earning in a year. Correct.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I mean, my starting wage for a jail
- 5:26Speaker 2: deputy is sixty eight thousand dollars a year. My starting
- 5:29Speaker 2: wage for a patrol officer is seventy two thousand dollars
- 5:32Speaker 2: a year. At the max rate for where law enforcement
- 5:35Speaker 2: officers are in the state of Colorado, you're talking anywhere
- 5:38Speaker 2: up to one hundred and some thousand dollars, right, So
- 5:41Speaker 2: fifty thousand dollars out of that year is pretty much
- 5:44Speaker 2: everything that they have after taxes anyways. So it's just destroying.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And then plus that, just do you have to go
- 5:52Speaker 2: through the court system and you've got to pay for
- 5:54Speaker 2: your own attorneys. At that point the cost is well
- 5:59Speaker 2: over one hundred thousand dollar for those lostters being sued
- 6:01Speaker 2: by this. Look, you just saw one sued in Mason
- 6:04Speaker 2: County by the state Attorney General, who is supposed to
- 6:07Speaker 2: be the person that protects law enforcement and sets laws
- 6:10Speaker 2: regulations for them.
- 6:12Speaker 1: I brought you on to talk about these things, but
- 6:14Speaker 1: I would be remiss and I know I would have
- 6:17Speaker 1: a lot of your supporters and a lot of people
- 6:18Speaker 1: who are undecided if I didn't talk to you about
- 6:21Speaker 1: your campaign. Can you give us an update on where
- 6:23Speaker 1: you're at with the goubnatorial race? And especially people always
- 6:27Speaker 1: ask me about you and other candidates what they can
- 6:29Speaker 1: do to find out more about you, Sheriff, and what
- 6:31Speaker 1: they can do either by way of financing, writing a check,
- 6:35Speaker 1: or helping out on a campaign as well. I think
- 6:38Speaker 1: most of you know that Sheriff Michel is running for governor.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Sheriff, well, I absolutely can't talk about that because I'm
- 6:44Speaker 2: off duty today, Richard. And here's the thing that I
- 6:47Speaker 2: will tell you. You can find me at mixelforegov dot com
- 6:51Speaker 2: and it's Michel at the number four gov dot com.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And here's the thing I will also tell you is that, really,
- 6:57Speaker 2: out of all the candidates that are running right now,
- 7:00Speaker 2: I'm the only one, if you really look at it,
- 7:02Speaker 2: that understands the business side, because I'm a business owner
- 7:05Speaker 2: and I've created businesses. And I'm also the only one
- 7:07Speaker 2: that understands the law side. And I'm not a career
- 7:10Speaker 2: politician and I'm out there trying to protect citizens every
- 7:14Speaker 2: single day. By being at the legislature and fighting for
- 7:16Speaker 2: the Second Amendment in different issues throughout Colorado. And I
- 7:20Speaker 2: understand all the needs because I'm a third generation Colorado
- 7:22Speaker 2: and but for more than that, it's the support of
- 7:25Speaker 2: the community that I'm getting across the state now that
- 7:27Speaker 2: is really making an impact and I think I'm the
- 7:29Speaker 2: only one that can win a general election in the state.
- 7:32Speaker 1: You've got it. How can people find out more by
- 7:34Speaker 1: way of a website or any appearances that you'll be
- 7:37Speaker 1: making coming up?
- 7:39Speaker 2: Yep, So I will be at the TPUSA in Mason
- 7:42Speaker 2: County to do a debate for them. I've got multiple
- 7:46Speaker 2: two events. You can find it on my schedule on
- 7:48Speaker 2: my website which is mixo fourgov, and you can find
- 7:52Speaker 2: me through all the social media platforms. And I hope
- 7:54Speaker 2: to see a whole lot of you.
- 7:55Speaker 1: You've got it. Thank you so much for taking time
- 7:57Speaker 1: out of your day and so, folks, this is the
- 7:59Speaker 1: way people, and that is I didn't ask him to
- 8:02Speaker 1: come on as a good natorial candidate, because if I
- 8:05Speaker 1: asked any good natorial candidate to come on, of course
- 8:07Speaker 1: I'd say yes. And you should understand there was nothing
- 8:11Speaker 1: talked about about us talking about that. That was a
- 8:13Speaker 1: decision I made right then he was going to talk
- 8:16Speaker 1: to us on his time off about the legislature and
- 8:19Speaker 1: about ice and about all of the rest of that.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 8:21Speaker 1: It impresses me. Overarching question today you heard from President Trump,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and David's going to go ahead and play you that
- 8:27Speaker 1: clip a couple more times over the course of the
- 8:29Speaker 1: show of him saying, you know, he thinks he's done
- 8:32Speaker 1: a good job and done enough good stuff to get
- 8:34Speaker 1: into Heaven. So is it merit based? Is there the
- 8:37Speaker 1: big scales that I used to see, Well, Richard, you
- 8:39Speaker 1: did all of these bad things, but you really did
- 8:42Speaker 1: slightly more good things over here, or is there another
- 8:45Speaker 1: component on this National Day of Prayer? All right, we're
- 8:49Speaker 1: going to be talking about BUCkies as well. And one
- 8:51Speaker 1: of the people when BUCkies was proposed up there that
- 8:54Speaker 1: I went to to talk to is the real estate expert,
- 8:57Speaker 1: and that is Barb Schlinker. Your homeshol guaranteed realty. She
- 9:02Speaker 1: knows the value of homes, whether it's going up north
- 9:06Speaker 1: Castle raw Greenland Ranch or going down south out onto
- 9:09Speaker 1: the Eastern Plains. And she knows that because she's been
- 9:11Speaker 1: doing it for twenty years here. You learn a lot
- 9:14Speaker 1: when that happens, and that experience is actually pretty rare.
- 9:17Speaker 1: A lot of people will get a real estate license,
- 9:19Speaker 1: it doesn't take all that long to do it, and
- 9:21Speaker 1: they really intend to get out there and sell a
- 9:23Speaker 1: lot of homes and stuff, but it turns out that
- 9:25Speaker 1: within seven years or so, five years or so, the
- 9:28Speaker 1: majority of them have stepped away because they were only
- 9:30Speaker 1: selling one home, two homes per year something like that.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Barb sells a home on average about once every thirty
- 9:36Speaker 1: six thirty eight hours, one hundreds per year. That's the
- 9:39Speaker 1: experience you want. And you can give her a call
- 9:42Speaker 1: at seven to one nine three oh one thirty nine hundred,
- 9:45Speaker 1: or you can visit Barbezebuyers dot com. And we were
- 9:48Speaker 1: just talking with Sheriff misl He's got a military background,
- 9:51Speaker 1: if my recollection is right lynd is what Moore's got
- 9:53Speaker 1: a military background as well. And when I talk about
- 9:56Speaker 1: Barb Slinker and how proud I am of her, she
- 9:59Speaker 1: is a Navy veteran as well. Very proud of her.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Your home soould guaranteed realty shortbreak. When we come back,
- 10:05Speaker 1: we'll be talking a little bit more about National Day
- 10:08Speaker 1: of prayer. But we will hear in the next hour
- 10:10Speaker 1: from the vice chair of the GOP, Richard Holdorp, who
- 10:13Speaker 1: steps down, and he said he just couldn't work with
- 10:15Speaker 1: Britta Horn as the second person who did that. But
- 10:17Speaker 1: we'll hear from Britta Horn and get her take on
- 10:20Speaker 1: that as well. Stay tuned seven one nine, seven to
- 10:22Speaker 1: one five zero seven four zero for phone calls or
- 10:25Speaker 1: for text
