- 0:24Hello and welcome to Talking FACS.
- 0:26What you need to know about family food finance and fitness.
- 0:30I'm your host,
- 0:31Mindy McCulley Extension Specialist for instructional support,
- 0:35the Family and Consumer Sciences Extension at the University of Kentucky.
- 0:39We are going to talk about Pickleball and our title is Get Healthy with Pickleball.
- 0:44And this is a continuation of our discussion from a couple weeks ago and my returning guests are Hardin Stevens Extension Specialist for healthy homes,
- 0:56Katherine Jury extension specialist for family health,
- 1:01and Doctor Amy Kostelic Extension Specialist for adult development and aging.
- 1:08So,
- 1:08Amy,
- 1:09we know that intergenerational relationships are important to health.
- 1:13But what other health benefits do we find with the goal?
- 1:18It's fun to promote pickle ball in regard to health because pickleball is associated with physical mental and social health and hard and arty stress,
- 1:28the importance or the um power of the social connections that can be had with pickle ball.
- 1:34So I'll hit a little bit on some of the physical health and really,
- 1:37I think some of the physical health people don't even think about because that's hard news been thing.
- 1:43Pickle ball is fun and people get hooked on it.
- 1:45They laugh a lot.
- 1:47There's some good competition,
- 1:48but in all fairness I've been on a couple of pickle ball courts and it is not all laughter.
- 1:53I mean,
- 1:53people take this game really seriously and,
- 1:58and I,
- 1:58I think for some,
- 1:59it can be a little intimidating even though all those things that Harden said it's true.
- 2:03It's easy to learn.
- 2:04It's easy to score,
- 2:05it's fun to play.
- 2:06But,
- 2:06um,
- 2:07you know,
- 2:07some people are just competitive by nature,
- 2:09but regardless,
- 2:11you know,
- 2:11it is a fun sport.
- 2:12It is an easy sport,
- 2:13it is an accessible sport.
- 2:14And so I think when you have that combination,
- 2:17people are more likely to keep doing it.
- 2:19And so that's what we want to see with physical activity because then you're moving more and sitting less and for a lot of people,
- 2:26they're doing something that they're enjoying.
- 2:28So they don't even think about the benefits physically that are going on.
- 2:32But what is actually going on is that,
- 2:34you know,
- 2:35different researchers have looked at this and have associated pickle ball with various things like weight management,
- 2:41weight loss,
- 2:42managing diabetes,
- 2:43improved cardiovascular and cardio respiratory fitness.
- 2:48If you look at it from bone strength.
- 2:51Again,
- 2:51just moving is gonna help keep bones stronger and it can help improve muscle strength.
- 2:56A couple of studies have reported that if you play three days a week for six weeks,
- 3:01you can see improvement with blood pressure,
- 3:03cholesterol and again,
- 3:04cardio respiratory fitness.
- 3:06But I think it's also really gonna depend on the level of play that you are engaged.
- 3:12You know,
- 3:12if it's,
- 3:13if you're not,
- 3:14you know,
- 3:14increasing your heart rate and things like that,
- 3:16there,
- 3:16there'll probably be less physical benefits.
- 3:19But again,
- 3:20there's still that philosophy of move more sit less.
- 3:23And that's certainly what pickle ball is promoting.
- 3:25Another thing that people don't think about either,
- 3:27but I certainly do,
- 3:28especially with older adults and young kids too,
- 3:31actually is improvement with reflexes and balance.
- 3:34You know,
- 3:35that if we can strengthen those things and,
- 3:38and be better on our feet,
- 3:39we are,
- 3:40um,
- 3:40we're able to contribute to more independence,
- 3:43have try to combat fall risk and even improve things like eye hand coordination,
- 3:49which are going to help us in daily activities.
- 3:52But the flip side of all of that is pickle ball is a sport and there can be some dangers involved too.
- 3:58I don't know if we've got a ton of time to talk about that,
- 4:01but I just want to make sure people highlight,
- 4:03especially if you're not,
- 4:04you know,
- 4:05balanced on your feet.
- 4:06You know,
- 4:07if you're making these sudden jerky movements,
- 4:09moving forward and backwards and going after a ball and that competitive nature gets inside of you and you,
- 4:15and,
- 4:15you know,
- 4:16unexpectedly pickle ball certainly has been associated with injuries as well.
- 4:20And so it's important that you take time to warm up.
- 4:23It's important that you listen to your body and,
- 4:26you know,
- 4:26try to do what you can to prevent injury as well based on what your ability is and what your comfort level is too,
- 4:33because it's certainly not worth a broken,
- 4:35you know,
- 4:36hip or something like that.
- 4:37So,
- 4:37in regards to mental health,
- 4:40you know,
- 4:41it can be just exercise in general,
- 4:43physical activity in general,
- 4:44it's such a mood booster,
- 4:45it can be a stress reducer.
- 4:47And so I think going out there,
- 4:49it really can stimulate your mind.
- 4:51Um because it requires you,
- 4:53like I was just saying,
- 4:53you've got to move forward to get a ball or anticipate where someone's gonna hit a ball.
- 4:57And so you're constantly thinking you're constantly strategizing while you're out there on the court.
- 5:02So you've got some,
- 5:03you know,
- 5:03some memory enhancement that's going on that can certainly help work to preserve cognitive function.
- 5:09Other studies have even found that pickle ball can help reduce depression and enhance a sense of purpose.
- 5:16And that makes sense too because you're playing pickleball with somebody else.
- 5:20And so there's a sense of accountability,
- 5:22you know,
- 5:23you make a plan and you're gonna go to the courts and you're gonna meet at such and such a time and,
- 5:28and you might look forward to that.
- 5:30It may give you a reason to get out of bed in the morning because you're going to play and have made that commitment.
- 5:35So,
- 5:35certainly a lot of health benefits there too.
- 5:37And then lastly just to tag a little bit more on,
- 5:39on what Harden has already said.
- 5:41But pickleball brings people together.
- 5:43It's a social sport and that's what it's meant to be.
- 5:46It was originally Harden.
- 5:48You might have to correct me on this.
- 5:49But I think it was created by our two fathers who made up the game for their kids because they were bored during the summer up at a lake house or something like that.
- 5:57So it was supposed to be fun.
- 5:59It was supposed to be silly.
- 6:00It's supposed to be social and,
- 6:02and you know,
- 6:02the,
- 6:02when we are around people,
- 6:04we're less socially isolated.
- 6:06Um,
- 6:06we tend to laugh more and things like that.
- 6:09And so again,
- 6:10like physical activity,
- 6:12if it's fun,
- 6:12you keep coming back.
- 6:13And so if you're having fun with people,
- 6:15you're more apt to keep coming back.
- 6:17So I think that's a really important component to this game as well,
- 6:21that we certainly want to,
- 6:22to highlight that it gives us a reason to do something fun and silly and to be together.
- 6:29Well,
- 6:29and I can tell both,
- 6:31uh,
- 6:31you and Harden are avid players,
- 6:34Catherine.
- 6:34Do you play as well?
- 6:36Not nearly as frequently as Harden and Amy.
- 6:41Although recently on a family vacation where we were staying had pickleball courts and we saw how popular it was.
- 6:53People of all ages,
- 6:55my six year old has enjoyed learning to play and we enjoy playing as a family with him.
- 7:02So,
- 7:02not nearly as competitively as,
- 7:05um,
- 7:05Harden or Amy,
- 7:07but recreationally,
- 7:08it is a lot of fun.
- 7:10Well,
- 7:10so how can people get started and where do they play?
- 7:14So,
- 7:15one of the other great things about pickle ball,
- 7:19if you are like me and a beginner,
- 7:23it doesn't require very many supplies.
- 7:27So just a good pair of sneakers,
- 7:32you want good foot support a paddle and a ball and the court size,
- 7:39as Harden mentioned earlier,
- 7:42basketball courts,
- 7:43tennis courts are easily modified and so just a few supplies that are usually easily accessible at your local sporting goods store or the recreation department of most big box stores are all you need.
- 8:03Um to be able to jump in and play.
- 8:08You may be able to find a group that plays together uh local to you.
- 8:14There is a places to play link on usa pickleball dot com.
- 8:21So that is a place that you could look to see if there's a league close to your home or in your local vicinity or you could contact your local recreation center,
- 8:34your local extension office may also be aware of places to play pickle ball in your area as well.
- 8:43And I will mention um you met,
- 8:44you brought up usa pickleball dot com.
- 8:48We will provide a link to that in the show notes so that everyone can click the link to go find who's playing in their communities.
- 8:55Tell us,
- 8:56tell us more about who and where can we can play.
- 9:00Well.
- 9:00Anyone really can pick up a paddle and try it out So you can play with just one other person or you can play on doubles.
- 9:13So four people at a time,
- 9:15two on each team.
- 9:17I think it was easier for me anyway to learn the rules from someone who's played before just by playing.
- 9:27Um Just to,
- 9:28to learn as you go.
- 9:29So if you have a friend that's willing to learn with you or you find a local group that's playing,
- 9:38don't be afraid to just jump in and learn as you go and have some fun along the way.
- 9:46It does sound like fun.
- 9:48And so perhaps I need to explore this um a little bit more in depth uh in my local community.
- 9:54So I'll go to usa pickle wall dot com and put my zip code in and find out where I can play.
- 10:00And I hope that all of our listeners will join in too and let us know how it goes.
- 10:04So,
- 10:05thank you all for joining me today.
