- 0:05Faberge egg stolen from Dog and Duck.
- 0:07Welcome to Mark and Pete, where we look at a story that you just
- 0:12couldn't make up, but it's of great value I think.
- 0:15Here is Mark and Pete 2 blokes with half an opinion.
- 0:20Now here's our first thought. Egg on your face People who own
- 0:25a fabulous Faberge egg may sometimes be oddly approached,
- 0:30so ensure you don't get in a scramble when it may be pinched
- 0:34or poached. What a tricky situation this is.
- 0:39Yes, and a remarkable story of the dog and duck in London.
- 0:43Yes, an opportunistic thief who stole a handbag containing an
- 0:47emerald encrusted Faberge egg worth up to a staggering £2.2
- 0:52million has now been lost and I must ask you, Mr. Pete, what
- 0:59have you done with it? Well, I'm sorry to say I thought
- 1:02that it was a Kinder Surprise and I.
- 1:05Hit it. The it's interesting, isn't it?
- 1:08Something an an egg sort of ornamental item quite small
- 1:12could could accidentally be stolen is so valuable.
- 1:18So it's quite difficult sometimes to put the value on
- 1:20things. I mean, I've heard of fabric
- 1:21eggs, I I don't even know if I would recognise 1.
- 1:25Well, these things are exquisitely produced, of course.
- 1:29Obviously Faberge, a well known jeweler from the late mid to
- 1:35late 19th century. Yes, he was without any doubt
- 1:38that one of the most world's renowned jewelry makers, but he
- 1:42made numerous encrusted jewelry from objects like and brooches
- 1:49as well as eggs. Now the Faberge egg themselves a
- 1:52world renowned and extremely well known and crucially prized
- 1:57possessions. Now what's remarkable about this
- 1:59is the lady called Dawson put this Faberge egg in her handbag,
- 2:04decided to go to the dog and duck and place it between her
- 2:07legs, somehow completely forgot herself, and a thief by the name
- 2:13of Enzo Conticelli decided that he would actually take the
- 2:18actual bag. Now unbeknownst to him, he was
- 2:22probably thinking, well I'll just steal the money and
- 2:24possibly some of the credit cards.
- 2:27Well, he did that, but what he found also in there was the
- 2:30surprise. As you say, the Kinder Surprise
- 2:33wasn't a Kinder chocolate egg, it was an jewelling.
- 2:36Crystal, of course, when he tried to, when he tried to sell
- 2:39it on eBay, that was very difficult, right?
- 2:42Yes, I managed to get that for a good price.
- 2:45No, honestly, Now the egg is made of 18 karat yellow gold.
- 2:50So for those who are looking out for this and it took more than
- 2:53100 hours to create, it is set with 104 diamonds and contains
- 2:58an uncut emerald from Zambia. Yes, Now it's also accompanying
- 3:04the fact of many in other jewels and gold and other precious
- 3:09metals that to make it up. But I will say to your point,
- 3:13how, what on earth do you do with something like this?
- 3:16Now maybe how can you say you could break it down?
- 3:20But the irony is, is that in it's current form, hopefully it
- 3:24is worth more than the actual inherent materials.
- 3:28So if you do happen and by chance happen to come across
- 3:32this, do not break it down. It is worth more in it's current
- 3:35state. Yes.
- 3:37Now, just a point, we try to look at Christian themes that
- 3:40just, if they naturally arise from the story, there's an idea
- 3:44in Christianity of recognising something that's valuable.
- 3:48Sometimes can be difficult, but if you know what's of value,
- 3:53you'll go searching for it. And it's interesting point out
- 3:56that this Faberge egg is like the story in the Bible of the
- 4:00Pearl of Great Price in which a merchant has lost one of his
- 4:05fine pearls. And so he's gave away
- 4:07everything, sold everything, he did whatever he could to get it
- 4:10back. And I guess that's not quite the
- 4:14same, but those Faberge eggs going for a couple of Miller
- 4:17piece, you'd, you'd do quite a lot to try and get it back.
- 4:22Although sometimes, and this again goes to the Christian
- 4:26theme, we are sort of casual cavalier with the value that
- 4:31we've got. You know, the the great
- 4:33spiritual value we have from following Christianity.
- 4:35We can throw it away due to so temptation or or inattention,
- 4:41just as the lady did who went down the pub with it.
- 4:47Well, I think that for those who have actually seen the actual
- 4:52leg yourself, it, it's actually a relatively small piece.
- 4:58But the, the point here is, is that irrespective of whether
- 5:02this was stolen or not, it's now clearly on the black market
- 5:06because the, the police and the owners have not seen or had it
- 5:11returned. So I must admit that you do
- 5:15wonder then when you start to sort of think about something
- 5:18that's so exquisitely produced as a craft, is it really worth
- 5:232.2 million? Because at the end of the day,
- 5:27you know, it's, it's actual value as a, as a Faberge piece.
- 5:32You can't really sell it because it's clearly stolen.
- 5:34You could almost argue it's worthless from the point of view
- 5:37of just simply the the egg itself.
- 5:40So I agree with you also that in this particular case it's
- 5:44unusual because of course it wasn't the targeted attack, the
- 5:48target was of course the handbag and of course the thief didn't
- 5:51realise what was in it. So is this just simply that the
- 5:55the thief has suddenly decided even though he has been caught
- 5:59incidentally because he was caught on CCTV using cash and
- 6:04and ironically the cards, he is not confessing just to where the
- 6:09actual egg is. So what say you Mr. Pete to the
- 6:14thief in terms of what he should do?
- 6:17Should he now just confess and say where he's hidden the egg or
- 6:21or maybe some of his accomplices?
- 6:24What should he be doing? Here, well, well, I think
- 6:27morally speaking, so talking from a Christian ethical point
- 6:30of view, he should absolutely say where it is.
- 6:33In fact, he should give it back to its rightful owner.
- 6:36Strategically, no, he should have to hold out because he
- 6:39might be able to get a good plea deal.
- 6:41Well, my, that's true. My suggestion is this, Anybody
- 6:46who knows where the whereabouts of this Faberge egg come out of
- 6:50your shell and give it back.
