- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn French with Fexingo. Luna, how are your hands feeling today? Luna: They're good! But after last episode, I keep looking at my fingers and trying to name them in French. Lucas: That's exactly what we're going to do today. We're diving deeper into the hand, specifically the fingers. Luna: Oh, I love that. I already know la main and les doigts, but what about each finger? Lucas: Exactly. So the thumb in French is le pouce. Repeat after me: le pouce. Luna: Le pouce. The thumb. Le pouce. Lucas: Perfect. Next, the index finger is l'index. L'index. Luna: L'index. That's easy, like the word index. Lucas: Right. Now the middle finger is le majeur. Le majeur. Luna: Le majeur. Sounds like major. The major finger. Lucas: Exactly. Then the ring finger is l'annulaire. L'annulaire. Luna: L'annulaire. That's a mouthful. L'annulaire. Lucas: You got it. And the pinky finger is l'auriculaire. L'auriculaire. Luna: L'auriculaire. Wow, that's even longer. L'auriculaire. Lucas: Let's say them all together: le pouce, l'index, le majeur, l'annulaire, l'auriculaire. Luna: Le pouce, l'index, le majeur, l'annulaire, l'auriculaire. Lucas: Great. Now let's use them in a sentence. If you hurt your finger, you say: Je me suis blessé au doigt. I hurt my finger. Luna: Je me suis blessé au doigt. What if I hurt my thumb? Lucas: Then it's: Je me suis blessé au pouce. Try it. Luna: Je me suis blessé au pouce. Lucas: And if it's the index finger: Je me suis blessé à l'index. Luna: Je me suis blessé à l'index. So for masculine fingers it's 'au', for feminine or vowel-start it's 'à l'. Lucas: Exactly. Le pouce, le majeur are masculine, so 'au'. L'index, l'annulaire, l'auriculaire start with a vowel, so 'à l'. Luna: That makes sense. Let me practice: Je me suis blessé au majeur. Je me suis blessé à l'annulaire. Je me suis blessé à l'auriculaire. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's do a quick scene. Imagine you're cooking and you cut your finger. What do you say? Luna: Je me suis blessé au doigt! Maybe more specific: Je me suis blessé à l'index. Lucas: There you go. Let's practice all the fingers again. Repeat after me: le pouce. Luna: Le pouce. Lucas: L'index. Luna: L'index. Lucas: Le majeur. Luna: Le majeur. Lucas: L'annulaire. Luna: L'annulaire. Lucas: L'auriculaire. Luna: L'auriculaire. Lucas: Let's do one more round: le pouce, l'index, le majeur, l'annulaire, l'auriculaire. Luna: Le pouce, l'index, le majeur, l'annulaire, l'auriculaire. I think I've got it. Lucas: You do. Practice pointing to each finger as you say it. That'll help. Luna: Good tip. Thanks for this lesson. Lucas: Merci d'avoir écouté. See you next time for more French with Fexingo.
