- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Welcome to week seven of the Section 4 football season.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: In this episode, Roger Neal will cover the Class B contest between Norwich and Windsor.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: I will cover the non-divisional game between Waverly and Owego.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: All right, Tim.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Hey, this weekend we're getting down there, the final couple of weeks of the regular season, pointing to the playoffs.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Every game has playoff implications, not just to qualify for the playoffs, but to jockey for seeding.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: And hopefully, at least in some cases, for home field advantage.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: One of those games coming up, Norwich at the Windsor Black Knights this weekend.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: It should be a very evenly matched game.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Let's take a look at what they look like coming into play this weekend.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: First of all, last week Norwich crushed Shenago Valley 49 to 6, and Windsor pulled out a 12-7 win against Owigo.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: In the Windsor win, they scored both TDs in the first half and then held on with some fine defense in the second half of play.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: But for Norwich, they rolled early.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: They got a big lead, and they were able to go on and knock off C V 49-6.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: So C V continues to look for its first win of the season.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: What about Windsor?
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Well, coming in 6-1 overall, 2-1 in Class B and Division III.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: And they've scored overall 203 points, averaging 29 a game.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: They've given up 98 for 14 a game.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: So they really offensively, averaging anyhow, have doubled up the points put on the board versus the ones that they have given up on the board.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: For Windsor in the game last week, Mason McCombs was a standout.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: 28 carries, which is a big workload at any level, 157 yards and one touchdown.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: So he was a big key in that win for Windsor against Owego.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Now both these teams are tied for second place in Class B behind the Maine Endwell Spartans who just keep on rolling overall 6-0 and atop the pack in Class B at 3-0.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Now, what about Norwich?
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Well, two and one in Division III play, three and four overall.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: They are averaging 35 points a game, but they've also given up almost 23 points a game.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: So they score more, but they give up more on defense as well.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Last weekend, they were up 34 zip over Shenango Valley, ending up winning at 49 to 6.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Purple Tornado, 240 yards rushing in that game.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: So they, if they pound the ball on the ground, are very difficult to stop.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Last weekend, Stephen Dowdall, a key five of eight passing, 85 yards, and a couple of touchdowns, but he also ran for 136 yards in seven carries.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: So they've got a potent offense, certainly one that if they have ground control, can be very difficult to stop.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: And uh that is going to be a tough test both ways.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Again, tied for second place in Class B.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Now, looking ahead, you can't look ahead, I know that, but hey, jockeying for standings, Norwich home against Maine and well next weekend, the regular season finale, while Windsor will travel to Johnson City next weekend.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: So obviously, this game is key.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: The Windsor Black Knights are at home against Norwich, and it should be one of the best games of the weekend, certainly around Class B competition, Tim.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Thank you for covering that, Roger.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Appreciate it.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Take care.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: You too.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Now our second game of the week.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: I want to begin with what is most important.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: This will be the pink out game.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: That's P-I-N-K out, pink out game in support of breast cancer awareness.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: A great cause that unfortunately has affected so many of us, including myself.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: I am a survivor of this disgusting two-syllable, six-letter C-word disease.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Contribute when and where you can.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: God bless.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Now the game.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: This should be a good old-fashioned Tioga County clash between Waverly and Owego.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Kickoff is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: at Owego's Christy J.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: Valvo Stadium.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: I'll begin with a little Captain Obvious and say Owego will have their hands full when they face the test from the West, the Waverly Wolverines, led by longtime head coach Jason Miller.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: Waverly is defending Section 4 Class C champions and currently ranked number 5 in New York State.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: They are 4-0 in the division and 6-1 overall.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Last week they beat a good Susquehanna Valley team 42-12, and they're on a five-game winning streak.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Waverly outscores their opponents by an average of 25 points per game, and Waverly possesses one of the best passing games in Section 4 and probably the state.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Their quick striking aerial attack is led by Waverly's fifth-year senior quarterback, Joey Tomaso.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: He's been playing so long, I believe we should be calling him Mr.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Tomaso.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: He can throw the whole route tree from the wide receiver bubble screen to the go route and every route in between.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: He can throw the fastball, long ball, and touch pass when needed.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: What makes Waverly tough to defend is Tommaso's ability to run the ball.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: When I was a defensive coordinator, these types of quarterbacks used to give me flu-like symptoms.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: His running ability will force a Uigo to play a lot of zone coverage so that they don't get run off by the receivers.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Waverly has a stable of receivers.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: Two 6'4 wide receivers, Jake Van Houten and who I call the X Factor, Xavier Watson.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: They are physical receivers with exceptional catch radius.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: They actually convert the 50-50 balls into 70-30 balls or 80-20 balls in their favor.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: They are complemented by slot receiver Jay Pfeiffer, who has been one of Joey's primary targets for three seasons.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: Jay has the outstanding ability in what I call both yak statistics.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Yaks meaning yards after catch and yards after contact.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Slot receiver Colson Keithly was switched to tailback last week due to injuries to other backs and gained 68 yards on seven carries and had one touchdown.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Last week, Mr.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Tommaso was 13 of 15 for 123 yards and four TDs in the first half.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: I'm sure Coach General Patton is well aware and has made plans to deal with this since they dug themselves a first half hole in the last two games.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Waverly can run the ball too.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Last week they accumulated 212 yards on 30 carries, and this was all with their two top ball carriers, Peyton Fravel and Ethan Perry, out.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: The Owego Riverhawks, and I'm still not used to that.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: I always want to say Owego Indians, but the Owego Riverhawks, led by first year head coach General Patton Taylor, came into this game peaking at the right time.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Owego is 2-2 in the division and 3-3 overall.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Last week they lost to Windsor 12-7, and Oego is averaging 21 points per game and allowing 24 points per game.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: They're currently tied with three teams for second place in a division.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Last week on a rainy night in Owego, they spotted a powerful Windsor team, two first half TDs, and then held Windsor scoreless the remainder of the game.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Not easy.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Ouego was in a position to win the game, actually.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Ouigo tried to fake punt late that ultimately worked in their favor, and they also had a successful onside kick right after making the score 12-7, but they weren't able to take advantage of the opportunity.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: That game probably determined the number two seed in the Class B playoffs.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Considering the Owego team fields almost all juniors, their roster, totaling 35 student athletes, is comprised of eight seniors, 24 juniors, and three sophomores.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Most of Owigo's starting 22 will be back next season.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: I look for improvements next season from them.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: Ouigo has been improving over the last few weeks, especially the play of their linemen.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: They are beginning to peak at the right time.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: And Owigo's quarterback Caleb Cole, along with his linemen and his backfield mates, Brendan Schofield, Joe Palladino, and Conland Taylor.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: They need to run the ball, keep the clock moving, and play keep away from the powerful Waverly offense.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Easier said than done.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: This should be a very interesting game.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Some student athletes to watch, and of course, this is an addition to the linemen for each team.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: Here are a few student athletes who will impact the outcome of this game.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: For Waverly quarterback Joey Mr.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Tomaso, slot receiver Jay Pfeiffer, wide receiver Jake Van Houten, wide receiver Colson Keithly, and the X Factor again, wide receiver Xavier Watson, and running back Carter George.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: For Owigo, quarterback Caleb Cole, tailback Brendan Schofield, running back Joe Paladino, fullback Conlin Taylor, wide receiver Adam Arball, and Jack Bushbaum.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: Now on to the Ask Coach Smith segment.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: Jim asks, I was watching a high school game recently, and a receiver wearing 99 caught a touchdown pass.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: I thought 99 was an ineligible receiver number.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Thank you for your question, Jim.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: To be an eligible receiver, the student athlete needs to meet two criteria.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: They must be lined up in an eligible receiver position and be wearing an eligible receiver number.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: The eligible receiver positions are the two players on each end of the line of scrimmage and the four players in the backfield.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: They must also be wearing the numbers 0 through 49 or 80 through 99.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Now I know that seems strange to have receiver numbers in the 90s, but by definition of the rule, 99 is an eligible receiver number.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: I encourage all of you to submit your questions and recommendations.
