- 0:43The Doctor Who commentary podcast where I Joe Ford and
- 0:48Brandon Jones. Hello.
- 0:51Hello. Dear listeners and Simon heart.
- 0:54Hello. Hello, are the only three gay
- 0:57Doctor Who fans in the whole universe.
- 1:00I have not slept together. How you doing?
- 1:03Gentlemen, well look, the height difference was just
- 1:10insurmountable. Well, it was really, I mean we
- 1:15we fucked everyone else but Off at store to get some emails in
- 1:22about this one. Joe Brenton, your conquests in
- 1:26England are notorious now, right?
- 1:28And still spoken to in hollowed Whispers Look for completely,
- 1:33unrelated reasons. I just have to recommend Phantom
- 1:35film's Events. Well, Joe knows all about that,
- 1:44why? We're here again to talk about
- 1:46Terminus episode 4, or I'm blaming Fraser.
- 1:54I shouldn't be here at all. I have no one to blame but
- 1:59myself. Yeah, we yeah you went for this
- 2:03one related. No, gentlemen, we're all three
- 2:07of us are heading to a very big bang back to the first event.
- 2:16Hey, why don't one of many Big Bangs in Doctor Who or you ready
- 2:21sir to take the plunge? Yes indeed.
- 2:26What does he bring it every time you come on, this thing a go
- 2:28gets very flowy you know bad influence.
- 2:35I'm a Libra. What can I say in five?
- 2:39Four, three, two, one. Let's bang.
- 2:44Oh sorry, let's go. Okay.
- 2:50So once again, I'd like to remind The Listener to look out
- 2:53for the star coming out of Peter Davison.
- 2:55Stop left highlight I've seen it now.
- 2:58Yeah, I just saw it as well. We'll never be able to unsee it.
- 3:03Now is the problem. Yes.
- 3:06Some is said something still with us.
- 3:08Asking was that deliberate? Yeah, he's still around.
- 3:12We could sort. We can find out.
- 3:16So, you know, that get towed it story.
- 3:17Hey, Doc must have his number, I'll ask him, you know that big
- 3:21finished or you were talking about Brendan.
- 3:23Hmm. It was that pitch famous?
- 3:26Yeah 21. Yeah.
- 3:30Okay. And I think it may have even
- 3:34been in front of your slot in an early in early Incarnation
- 3:40because I seem to recall reading somewhere.
- 3:42That part of the reason that bid made rights front, EOS is Um,
- 3:46that's a word wanted someone he didn't have to do much work
- 3:50with. You know, because, you know,
- 3:52he's massaging between dilemma and The Awakening by new
- 3:58writers. And so, you know, he wanted some
- 4:02old hands that he wouldn't have to, he wouldn't have to monitor
- 4:06so hard. She know I love your choice of
- 4:08words, but the for various toward massaging, anybody fills
- 4:12me with Terror. Well, you have to remember.
- 4:15That would be the fault of producer John nathan-turner, but
- 4:18of course, Did you see that thing?
- 4:25Very busy scene. There wasn't a loss was going on
- 4:28and none of it was very it was like Richard.
- 4:29Martin was directing it for a second, it's not quite that bad.
- 4:35Yeah, but predominantly Garbutt. Oh no, never have another go, it
- 4:42is bellboys brother. Yes, yeah, even even when
- 4:47watching great showing the Galaxy in 1989, my mum came in
- 4:51and she said, oh, that's the brother of The guy who was in
- 4:54Terminus, you remember? No.
- 4:57I don't remember. Yeah, it probably is.
- 5:06Yes. He's got a lovely hairy chest
- 5:11and only one of them was shortlisted for the role of the
- 5:14doctor, by the way alarm. Sure it will.
- 5:20You please make that point so controlling the go on.
- 5:22Sorry. I was just going to say don't
- 5:25dominate guard was a bafta award winner for best newcomer in the
- 5:2870s as a child actor. Yes, I comfy repetitively.
- 5:34Oh good for him. Like I don't think he's bad in
- 5:37this but I think I think just his characters of it regardless.
- 5:40Yes. Yeah I do wonder and I'm going
- 5:44to say a lot of a lot of these actors have been in 80s who you
- 5:48know, they go on to the the woman who played Preston in
- 5:51Warriors that are deep. She went on to write a series of
- 5:54self-help books to help. I will say in terms of tower
- 6:11award, as Preston pennant Roberts comes in for a lot of
- 6:14criticism. And rightfully so, you know,
- 6:17leading to our friend, Peter Peter, Griffiths term pennant,
- 6:21Robert scientist, but one of the great decisions, he makes is
- 6:28gender flipping characters to have more women in Doctor Who
- 6:32and the two notable times, he does it with Marnie in the sun,
- 6:34makers, and Preston. In in worries of the deep, it's
- 6:39a great success. And he gets great actresses into
- 6:42play those parts. Like, Preston is probably my
- 6:46favorite character, in in Warriors of the deep for the way
- 6:49they pay her up with turlough. I'm going to say something a bit
- 6:53controversial. Here, possibly a bit.
- 6:55Controversial, go on. I think if you take Carrie and
- 7:00all the air out of this story and put Tegan and turlough in
- 7:04their place, you would have a stronger script that would work.
- 7:09Well, they would give them signs.
- 7:10Who exactly you? You have kind of wandering
- 7:15around with Peter and you have turlough, trying to rescue
- 7:19Nyssa. Despite the fact, he, he thinks
- 7:22he doesn't really care. But You've got that conversation
- 7:27with turlough earlier and Teagan talking about.
- 7:29Could you kill someone? He's going to have his moral
- 7:31qualms? This could be his moral qualms.
- 7:34Yeah, you know, and like all these Rescue of NASA is really
- 7:39effectual because it is that they do in Amy's who specially
- 7:46Davis's time, where you've got a lot of Companions and then they
- 7:52added tons of mostly or interesting guest characters.
- 7:57So then their companions don't get a lot to do our finger.
- 8:00It happens a bit in Jody whiskers time as well and I love
- 8:02Jodie Whittaker time. I'm not being too critical, but
- 8:06like you look at the enormous guest cast of, I do practice
- 8:09itís. When you've got all those
- 8:12regulars, look at the enormous guest cast are all in the Tardis
- 8:15in The Awakening. When you've got, you know, all
- 8:18of those regulars as our choice. Yeah.
- 8:22And going back to this point, if you then gender flips, It's a
- 8:25couple of the veneer as well and cast slowly Benjamin.
- 8:31Well, you could still past Lisa Goddard as one of them and yep,
- 8:37and dominant God as well. You know, there is no reason why
- 8:40not. And yeah, you could make this a
- 8:43really interesting. It's JN T.
- 8:46It be like Mollie sugden or something like that.
- 8:58They are both really good. Yeah, their roles in something
- 9:05like this. I think she would actually go.
- 9:07Hey, this is something really interesting.
- 9:09You know, have her as a Iraq. You know, you don't want to put
- 9:12her in a fight, sir, but rather is Iraq and she's running the
- 9:17thing. Yeah, just the Bittersweet Taste
- 9:22of life. As ball be hilarious, the
- 9:36readings are off. And I was saying only the other
- 9:41day that you can't have these reading.
- 9:43It's all these young veneer coming over here and get on
- 9:46Photo excited and happy about this Rimmel.
- 9:49I mean really. Oh boy, what's going on here?
- 9:52Look at all this floodlight in. Well yes, this is this, this
- 9:57scene in Particular was harm highlighted by the actor and
- 10:02comedian Robert Webb in his autobiography.
- 10:05As one of the seminal moments of his teenage years, I'll bet it
- 10:09was. And also, by my best friend.
- 10:12Gareth who also has said that Nissa in this story, had a
- 10:16particularly profound effect on him as a teenage boy.
- 10:22I mean that's that is the usual 80s lighting that we get.
- 10:26There is yes that's lovely. Yes yes.
- 10:32You know, something they said stew will is use use the
- 10:35negative space like the Blackness behind the screens.
- 10:38Now, this was, this was something I had a problem with
- 10:41yesterday. It's like, they're like, we'll
- 10:43get the goddamn, he's really strong and it's like, they
- 10:46literally seen the gum for all of 10 seconds.
- 10:49How could I know? Yes.
- 10:51Yeah, he's demonstrating known strength.
- 10:53Is he picks up? He picks up Peter Benson.
- 10:56Who's Tai Chi? Oh yeah.
- 11:00The black Guardian was in this. Oh well it's a popped up on the
- 11:06screen. And for some reason he docks out
- 11:14turlough, he's like you haven't done the job yet.
- 11:15Go back and do the job. But also, I'm Gonna Knock you
- 11:17unconscious. Now it's like what?
- 11:19But yeah, it keeps him out of the action for a bit longer.
- 11:23Hmm. It's the other reason that scene
- 11:26with with necessary, no 90 in the in in the floodlit chamber
- 11:32is a bit. Disappointing is in the script
- 11:37she sits up and is there is kind of clinical and Guys.
- 11:42Okay, observation the lesions are gone, I feel blah, blah,
- 11:46blah. My temperature seems to be down
- 11:48to, which would foreshadow that she's thinking about, you know,
- 11:51how to do this treatment. And it was cut out in favor of
- 11:54just kind of looking around. And it's like, you know, in
- 11:59episode 1 she's doing things and halfway through episode 2.
- 12:02She stops doing things she's been pushed around for a week
- 12:05and a half. It's a shame to lose that and
- 12:09she said herself, she she thinks there's Is a brilliant idea at
- 12:13the heart of this story in the documentary.
- 12:14She says, she would love to see this made now because you
- 12:17imagine this with like the Mandalorian I'll check or
- 12:20something like that, you know? It would be spectacular.
- 12:26And you know the corporate the corporate commentary of this is
- 12:29not a million miles away from Something Like Oxygen.
- 12:31Mmm. Yeah, true in, you know, in the
- 12:34new series because you've got, you've got something here, which
- 12:38could save this guy's life, and it's under lock and key.
- 12:42Mmm. Do we ever find anything out
- 12:44about the company? Not really.
- 12:49No. And that was I think J&T asked
- 12:52for that to be paid back in in favor of the the plot basically,
- 13:00the plot about the characters as they are here.
- 13:02Now, let's not talk about the cut and I think you lose
- 13:04something with that. You lose a lot of
- 13:06world-building. Oh, this is hilarious.
- 13:10Where she she knocked over over then, climbs on top of him.
- 13:14I'll bet Robert. Wade, woke up like there's a
- 13:16child watching this. I just hate the way the gun
- 13:22moves. If I do think it's a weirdly.
- 13:27Like, it does have a bit of expression the face.
- 13:29Am I mad? Because the bit in a, when he
- 13:32pulls the lever and then looks really proud.
- 13:36I'm like, I can see the pride in his face, you know.
- 13:40Yeah it you know it's a bit it's a bit of bathos but also it's a
- 13:43bit of levity, this story. He I'm Ashley, I'm sorry, Janet
- 13:49just wandering around looking for Mark when when this are
- 13:53comes along and says goodbye suddenly, there's an injection
- 13:56of emotion and I don't think there's an emotional story, I
- 14:00father. Hmm.
- 14:03Yeah. And I think part of that is, you
- 14:05know, Nyssa and Tegan have the most emotive relationship of
- 14:10this crew. And they're separated for the
- 14:13entire story. Hmm, which is a great shame.
- 14:17Now correct me if I'm wrong but geographically isn't the bridge
- 14:22inside the restricted Zone but they're starting to walk away
- 14:26from the restricted Zone yet. You know, they're rushing at
- 14:30this point. I just walk in any direction.
- 14:32We've got to shoot this thing. I have to wonder if Dominic
- 14:40Garden is sort of sitting there going, okay?
- 14:43Do not show any do not show anything in my eyes at this
- 14:47moment. I've been cold because it can
- 14:49show or don't do a long shot so you can see my crotch.
- 14:55Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:59On numb, on the whole comparison to leprosy the way Nyssa.
- 15:04Describe secure here is more in line with Gallagher's, original
- 15:07idea where Terminus was sort of a space Shrine and nobody knew
- 15:11where it came from bun. People thought it could be
- 15:15engines cured cancer because this is basically had radiation
- 15:20therapy here. Yeah.
- 15:24It's it's kind. It's kind of an odd mishmash so,
- 15:29and it's almost like the leper comparison wasn't needed in the
- 15:32first episode, know what was happening to the people before
- 15:36this. Then other are they being
- 15:37treated or still being treated and been shipped back.
- 15:41But there's a yes very hits a Miss process.
- 15:45I'm guessing Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is as you know, it's
- 15:50hitting miss. It works for some people and not
- 15:53others because no one's actually observing what works and what
- 15:56doesn't It's just like will flood you with radiation if it
- 16:00works. You go home.
- 16:01If it doesn't, you know, you'll die here.
- 16:04Yeah. Child will not calm, Scott,
- 16:07filthy fingernails. I actually think those gloves
- 16:09look really good. Yeah, Klaus it is again.
- 16:16This is like a year so near to this working just turn the
- 16:21lights down completely just have him as a silhouette.
- 16:27But it's almost like it's not something I can't we designed
- 16:30this thing you're going to see it, you know.
- 16:33Mmm Yeah. If you look at like I think it's
- 16:37the the second story of sapphire and steel the railway station.
- 16:41There's some brilliant shadow effects in that which are really
- 16:44Sinister and they could have done something similar here, but
- 16:48I wonder if it's the hand of J and T similarly, with the
- 16:52Candyman and later on, it's like, no, no, no.
- 16:55We need a Monster. Yeah.
- 16:57That's entirely possible. Well, he's done it Mary with
- 17:04saved here. Yeah, you're right.
- 17:10There's some expressiveness to that mask.
- 17:12Despite the fact, it can barely, but it's just actually shoots
- 17:16it. So, are you saying marry rich?
- 17:20Mary Ridge also directs rescue is that right Sy?
- 17:24That's right. Yeah.
- 17:26Yeah. Because you know, there's a
- 17:29monster in that which despite not being originally made for
- 17:33the program, let's say is super effective because it's kept in
- 17:38its kept in Shadow. Mmm.
- 17:42You see a sea devil? It is.
- 17:45It is a sea devil. Yeah, here we go.
- 17:50Here's the moment. A lot worried looks really.
- 17:53Yeah. Oh, I didn't.
- 17:59Yes, dr. Ann Curry, like they do like
- 18:02pairing off the doctor with his slightly older women and they
- 18:06I'm thinking of naris, use or the liver birds that probably
- 18:09James. This is probably the weakest All
- 18:12right. Mmm, Yeah.
- 18:16And yes, yes. Like I was like slightly older
- 18:20compared to the Companions and it makes you wonder if perhaps
- 18:27Repairing Davis and off with say, a woman closer to his own
- 18:31age. Might have been better all
- 18:33along. But I wouldn't exactly have
- 18:36wanted to lose in this sorority girl.
- 18:38You know, I would have Brendan us who, what if there is, who
- 18:42chose to go in the Tardis. At the end of Kinder, I would
- 18:45have worked a tree. Oh my goodness.
- 18:49Wouldn't it just? It is funny how big finish of
- 18:52gone? Oh yeah.
- 18:53We want to have Narrows users to regular but we don't want to
- 18:56bring back. Todd laughing.
- 19:04Yeah. And look Margaret.
- 19:06Hopkins is brilliant and I think, you know, she's a really
- 19:08great character but it's like Davison's right there and we've
- 19:12all been saying over 40 years. Sweden is suddenly all that
- 19:17agency that she hasn't had in this story.
- 19:20She is got in Spades in this scene.
- 19:23I'm going to do this. Are you interested?
- 19:26Yeah. And you know, these people have
- 19:28been manhandling a manner calling her at exposing it to
- 19:31radiation. And her first reaction is to say
- 19:34that the, what if I can help you?
- 19:36Yeah. Yes.
- 19:38Very satisfying and spying into a kind of unsatisfying story.
- 19:44Yeah, and it is a through line with Nyssa that.
- 19:50There's not a vindictive bone in her body.
- 19:54You know, even in say, ARCA Arc of infinity when she's like,
- 19:58grabbing a weapon and holding it on the time Lords.
- 20:01It's for the purpose of saving the doctor and when they're
- 20:05later working together, there's no animosity.
- 20:07It's, you know, it's about getting the job done.
- 20:10Hmm. And say with the seraphin who
- 20:16sort of submitter to psychic attack, she's then like okay how
- 20:18do I help? So it's not at all, like, is
- 20:23completely in Carousel. This I just don't think this is
- 20:27where we want to leave our of this dreary.
- 20:30So Medical Way Station, in the middle of nowhere.
- 20:34What the middle of the universe? Yeah, true.
- 20:38True that as you know don't be sad.
- 20:41She has like 100 of her adventures with big finish old
- 20:45Anissa. Yes, yes.
- 20:49So they are still continuing, but there's sort of a run of I
- 20:54think it's 15 story actually yet though they're not making any
- 20:59more with old in this. That's right because they do
- 21:01this run of 15 stories with her coming back as old in this and
- 21:04it's actually a really good Arc and it's a good run for, isn't
- 21:08it? Hmm and yes Sarah.
- 21:14Something is a bit like Peter Davison in that the part is
- 21:17sometimes under written but she's always acting.
- 21:20She's always on. Yeah, and she and I think
- 21:23there's actor of the of the regulars at this point as well.
- 21:27Certainly, the most experienced of them all Other than Davison
- 21:32obviously. Yeah, I'd agree with you there.
- 21:36I think her only her only Achilles heel and it's quite
- 21:40understandable is when she has to scream but she doesn't
- 21:45believe that NASA would be screaming at this moment.
- 21:50And it's been a lot of that this story where is he knock of
- 21:52infinity. When she sees the oh God she
- 21:54lets out a brilliant script. Yeah.
- 21:56I better write one so that you would scream.
- 21:59Mmm. Yeah.
- 22:00Whereas here and it's take Dad's, it's very obviously I'm
- 22:04screaming because I've been told to scream.
- 22:07Bye. Let's just get it over with so
- 22:16much for your just this Yeah. And she's, she's very
- 22:27naturalistic and subtle, and he put that against Janet Fielding
- 22:33or Matthew Waterhouse who are not naturalistic or subtle
- 22:37certainly to begin with. And so, she gets a bit lost
- 22:39because the attention is not on her.
- 22:42Hmm. Yeah.
- 22:47And and, you know, this is a lovely moment where Iraq who I
- 22:52suppose is as close as this story gets to a Villain.
- 22:56Like the story, doesn't really have a villain in the way that
- 22:58worry is gated. But even here, he's not killed
- 23:04off. He's just It's implied.
- 23:09He's going to be persuaded to be more collaborative.
- 23:15Which is probably a baby that may be sure and things that's
- 23:18really quite a realistic Hindi but you're making here is a
- 23:22point there because you're right, there's no real villain
- 23:25there's not really sort of monsters and it's a bit of a
- 23:28dull aching so it's not really got any of those things.
- 23:31We usually hang a doctor who Story on.
- 23:36Yeah. And here Nyssa gets one last
- 23:39moment of being The Peacemaker between the ashes.
- 23:45She has, and I just noticed a little bit that she, I just
- 23:49noticed. Yeah, I just noticed a little
- 23:51bit there when when Lisa sees Tegan.
- 23:55She there's a look on her face of ol shit.
- 23:57Now, I have to tell her I'm leaving.
- 23:59Yeah. And I like that it sort of done
- 24:04in the background there and it's just physical acting and
- 24:06Tegan's, like not, not having it.
- 24:08Mmm, I'm going to speak to the doctor.
- 24:10He'll talk you out of it. Hmm.
- 24:13Well then answer me this question then, why if they can
- 24:17do these things I think this scene is very naturalistic and
- 24:21very emotional and I think turlough when he leaves it's
- 24:24exactly the same. Why doesn't this happen all the
- 24:27time in age? Who are they?
- 24:29Just not interested in these in these sort of relationships
- 24:33until these sort of big moments here?
- 24:36I think that's it. I think that's the thing that
- 24:39you get your big moment when you leave, or when you join and
- 24:43that's it. Otherwise, it's business, as
- 24:44usual. It's an action-adventure, we're
- 24:47not concerned with, with people's emotions in the way.
- 24:51Other shows are what this is Doctor Who this isn't what
- 24:53doctor who does. There's no.
- 24:55Tank in the Tardis is no touching.
- 24:57There's no none of this. I'm amazed they got away with
- 25:01the kiss to be honest. Yeah.
- 25:04Well Sarah Sutton and Peter Davison insisted on the case and
- 25:08it was Sara. Something's idea.
- 25:11And, you know, for from Sara something's point of view.
- 25:14It's like Nyssa has lost her father and her entire culture.
- 25:19The doctor has been her father figure, she's not just going to
- 25:23shake his hand like its Cricket match.
- 25:26Yeah, she there's going to be something there.
- 25:30Yeah, I agree with you Simon. I think the problem is the
- 25:35doctor production office has always gone, you know, kids can
- 25:38understand the science. And it's important that we don't
- 25:41talk down to them, which is commendable, but it seems like
- 25:43they kind of go. The kids will either be
- 25:46interested in the science, all they'll be interested in
- 25:48Emotion. You can't have both and the Shag
- 25:52your belly, it's not until yeah? Arguably.
- 25:54It's not until Andrew. Aunt Mel and I think also
- 25:57previously Barry Letts and Terrance dicks understood that
- 26:00no you have to have that emotional core as well because
- 26:03you know, Joe Grant has it and I think then Ace has it.
- 26:10But not so much in between, and of course, the new series gets
- 26:12it, but yeah, it's a great shame that no one seems to have gone.
- 26:17As you say Joe, it's like we could have this kind of thing
- 26:21every so often. Mmm, we can have the companions
- 26:24talking about how they feel. And yeah, it's something that
- 26:29Steven Gallagher does even that earlier same with turlough
- 26:32talking about, you know, whether he could kill someone.
- 26:35That's an emotional, Crocs Point Romano talking about she and the
- 26:39doctor going her separate ways before she even knows about the
- 26:43ferals, like she's just thinking about leaving and her saying
- 26:47that to adric and Advocates, panicked reaction again.
- 26:50Because this is his family. Yeah.
- 26:53And like, they can't do it because we just had one in more.
- 26:57An undead where we've got that little touching scene at the end
- 27:00where Tegan says, thank you, you were going to give up everything
- 27:04for us, and this is what it means to me, and it's
- 27:08understated, and it's beautiful. Yes, I think I think what it
- 27:14comes down to is when you treat the characters like a family,
- 27:18those scenes naturally occur. Yes.
- 27:24Because you know, you get those moments with like Heartland
- 27:28Carol Ann Ford or Hartnell and Maureen O'Brien.
- 27:31You get them with Jamie in Victoria and they're sort of
- 27:35slightly sibling thing and the whole unit family.
- 27:40Hmm, you know, you you get that and I think it's something
- 27:45something Nathan says, is when Doctor Who drops down to only
- 27:50having one companion and not having any other recurring
- 27:53characters, That's something you lose.
- 27:57You lose that emotional connection because you need it
- 28:00between the Companions and the doctor but you need it between
- 28:03companions as well. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:06And everyone he had a relationship with each other.
- 28:09Not just the doctor Hmm. And so something I said about
- 28:14the whydah Ciara is that, I think part of the reason Yaz is
- 28:17underdeveloped for so long is Graham and Ryan have an inbuilt
- 28:21family connection. As soon as they go and you bring
- 28:27in Dan and so yes, his character becomes teaching Dan, what it
- 28:31being a companion is her character really, really
- 28:35blossoms. And, you know, I think that men
- 28:39have guilt is a fantastic at the.
- 28:41She's a bit like Sarah something actually she's a fantastic
- 28:44naturalistic actor and when you give her stuff to do, you get
- 28:48scenes like the last 10 minutes of terminus there.
- 28:52The bit where Diane said to her in evil of the Daleks, you know,
- 28:56you really like her, don't you? I sat up and I was like, what is
- 29:00happening here? I'm not used to seeing what Yaz
- 29:03with this much. Emotional resonance.
- 29:06No, I was like, come on too little too late.
- 29:12Yeah, yeah, exactly. Exactly.
- 29:15Well, boys Terminus and did while we were having out.
- 29:19Fabulous should about Aris often and we are now going to have to
- 29:24do the usual round. Robin of three things each?
- 29:29Wow. Oh my goodness.
- 29:31That we would recommend about Terminus to the, to the greater
- 29:35public. I believe we should start with
- 29:39Brendan then soy and then I'll go low.
- 29:41Last will go one at a time. Three pieces.
- 29:44Off you go. Right?
- 29:48Three things. I recommend and Sarah Sutton's
- 29:50performance. Glow sticks, glow sticks are
- 29:59always fun. And and you know what, despite
- 30:06the fact that they have no influence on the plot, the
- 30:07character work between Tegan and turlough is really good.
- 30:11Mmm. Okay, sigh.
- 30:14Okay. I will choose Peter Benson as
- 30:16bore, giving a fun performance in a story full of varied, our
- 30:21performances. I am going to go for scenes that
- 30:28are shot on film because they're far more atmospheric than the
- 30:32scenes that That are set in the studio and for my final one, I'm
- 30:38going to go for the early Tardis scenes, which I think are really
- 30:41nicely done, and create a good dynamic between all the
- 30:45characters and that actually quite exciting as well.
- 30:50Because again let me remark have yeah I'm gonna say the entirety
- 30:56of episode one which I think sort of stand-alone is yet very
- 31:01special. I do love those scenes where
- 31:02they're exploring the the leadership we effectively
- 31:06directed great soundscape in that shoe.
- 31:10Really interesting Sounds playing through.
- 31:13I'm going to say the script which I think has a lot of
- 31:18promise and sort of Big Ideas in it and like it.
- 31:23Why he says he's got a very good script.
- 31:25I think this is the few occasions in this sort of mid
- 31:2780s where there's a good dramatic script does Sabotage by
- 31:33a less dramatic production and my last thing is to little
- 31:38insane, this is leaving soon. No not specifically no then this
- 31:44is leaving. See which I think this is
- 31:46something that 80s who gets really right.
- 31:50It writes out his companions really, really well and in
- 31:53different ways. I like Ramana getting her very
- 31:56quick. She's already made a decision
- 31:58and if we'd have had a long sort of Maudlin scene between her and
- 32:02top, that would have just felt wrong.
- 32:03I think that's beautifully done. I think Patrick's leaving see,
- 32:08it's incredible. Uh-huh, this is very emotional.
- 32:11Annal Tegan's is quick and to the point like Tegan Perry's is
- 32:18Unforgettable. Mel's is under nicely written.
- 32:23Very nicely done. Yeah.
- 32:24As long as I know this is leaving, say it and it's just a
- 32:27real strength of 82 that they do manage to see out their
- 32:31companions in a really effective.
- 32:33Why Look up, boys. We did it.
- 32:36We did think I'm crazy. This has been quite a for an
- 32:43entire four episodes. We did Brendan.
- 32:48Yes. I, our next venture is going to
- 32:52be to jump away from Doctor Who and talk about one of the most
- 32:58fabulous TV shows ever to be graced of our squeeze.
- 33:02We're doing hamster extra on. The Avengers.
- 33:07Oh, magnificent, Al butter. Yeah, that's a perfect fit.
- 33:13What on? Wait to see which ones you
- 33:14choose? What have you chosen your five?
- 33:18Yes, hold on. I think I think I got a list
- 33:22here. I have a list of everything
- 33:23else. I was, uh, I was just on my
- 33:26phone there. Well, well, Joe was talking
- 33:28about companion about it because I just wanted to check and yes,
- 33:30John nathan-turner did work on invasion of time and Armageddon
- 33:35Factor. So I wonder if his companion so
- 33:37good because he saw what happens when you don't plan for now.
- 33:45Let me see if I've got my list of Avengers, It will be
- 33:48covering. I do believe that John
- 33:51nathan-turner whispered into Philip Minds here Perry has to
- 33:55Die. The we can just believe that God
- 34:00you had a sense of occasion. Now, here we are for The
- 34:06Avengers. Joe did agree to stretch the
- 34:09format a little bit. So we're actually going six, but
- 34:12that's because what it's like I'm doing signal as well.
- 34:18We're going to have a hot snow which is the okay.
- 34:20So the Avengers, but only the only the First Act exists.
- 34:23Uh-huh. And then there's like a
- 34:25five-minute reconstruction of the back of the episode.
- 34:29We're also going to be doing mr. Teddy bear.
- 34:31Yeah, which was the first episode, The Great British
- 34:35public saw of Honor Blackman man with two Shadows which is one of
- 34:40my personal favorites. The Cyber notes which is a
- 34:46famous Diana Rigg episode. And popular reason which using
- 34:49that is whenever there's any Revival of the Avengers Like
- 34:52Comics or whatever, it's always the bloody cyber naught because
- 34:55they were the only that were the only returning adversary.
- 35:02Then we're doing the winged Avenger, mmm, which is a color
- 35:07episode. And one of the Avengers, most
- 35:09famous parodies and Vitara King. We're rounding it off with all
- 35:13done with mirrors. Oh perfect, she's yes, why
- 35:18Widely regarded as the best episode.
- 35:20Hmm, yeah, so we can store online, commentary of, didn't we
- 35:24all those years ago with Linda false indeed, Robert chidester.
- 35:29Yes, yes, I actually have right here.
- 35:32Sigh. Nobody lives it.
- 35:37Right. Every time I use, don't worry,
- 35:39I'm gonna break it. Yes, my no.
- 35:41No, went to few years ago, the handle just just win.
- 35:45Oh wow. Yeah.
- 35:48But mine survive the trip back to Australia and near-daily you
- 35:52call through. Yeah, I will be very sad when it
- 35:57breaks. Uh-huh.
- 35:59Well, I'll be very sad but I was commentaries are over.
- 36:01That sounds really enticing. Hmm.
- 36:04You know what? I think.
- 36:04I've only seen one of those episodes, so I'll be watching
- 36:07those. Pretty much knew who actually
- 36:10got some treats ahead. I like how I and I cannot wait
- 36:13to be in the hands of an expert as well, because I think it's
- 36:16faceting show The Avengers. So to sort of um pick it with
- 36:20you. It's going to be wonderful and
- 36:23side where we heading next. Uh-oh, we've got half of The
- 36:27Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to finish.
- 36:29It's off, we do and we are next solo.
- 36:34Hamster is going to be the Day of the Doctor.
- 36:39Oh yes. Yes.
- 36:41I've just thrown at you and our next Double axe.
- 36:44Hamster is going to be the planet of the spiders.
- 36:48Oh wow, nice. Well boys, I've got to go to bed
- 36:55because it's almost 11:00 and I'm up in six hours.
- 36:58So I'm going to round this This off by saying you're both
- 37:01fucking gorgeous and thank you very much.
- 37:07Thank you very much for letting me hijack.
- 37:08This one Make sure the center of the universe.
- 37:16Let's take it. A straight to the center of the
- 37:18universe gentlemen. It has been a pleasure as
- 37:21always, thank you.
