- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is a Wednesday, It is
- 0:16the 6th of September. We are well into spring, and it
- 0:20is so good that you have sprung as well as spring.
- 0:23Welcome. So good to have your company
- 0:26today as we continue walking through this treacherous path
- 0:31through Isaiah and yesterday's reading.
- 0:33My goodness, Chapter 34 was a shocker, wasn't it?
- 0:37It is so full of doom and gloom and judgment and murder and
- 0:42slaughter. It can feel a little bit hard,
- 0:46but this is how they wrote in that time and place in the
- 0:51world. And it doesn't mean that
- 0:52literally the stars will fall from the sky and literally every
- 0:57man and every child will be murdered in cold blood.
- 1:00This is the dramatic over exaggerated style of
- 1:06communicating what complete victory over an enemy looks
- 1:10like, and it's certainly very colorful.
- 1:13And today we go to the opposite end of the spectrum.
- 1:16Today is all about restoration after the destruction of
- 1:20yesterday. And today there will be
- 1:23incredibly generous language used about the the totality of
- 1:28what God will do in restoring his people and restoring his
- 1:32creation. So this is a lot more hopeful
- 1:34and we don't mind hearing, you know, way over the top
- 1:37statements of restoration. It it seems much more pleasant
- 1:40to hear them than the other end. So we made it through yesterday.
- 1:44Now we can settle into some talk of what God does in the wake of
- 1:49things going wrong. God is a God of restoration.
- 1:53So let's enjoy this chapter together.
- 1:55It's not a long one. So we will savor it every one of
- 1:58these 10 verses. So let's read together Isaiah
- 2:02chapter 35. Even the wilderness and desert
- 2:15will be glad in those days. The wasteland will rejoice and
- 2:19blossom with spring crocuses. Yes, there will be an abundance
- 2:24of flowers and singing and joy. The deserts will become as green
- 2:29as the mountains of Lebanon, as lovely as Mount Carmel or the
- 2:33plain of Sharon. There the Lord will display his
- 2:37glory, the splendor of our God. With this news strengthen those
- 2:43who have tired hands and encourage those who have weak
- 2:46knees. Say to those the fearful hearts,
- 2:49be strong and do not fear, for your God is coming to destroy
- 2:53your enemies. He is coming to save you.
- 2:57And when He comes, he will open the eyes of the blind and unplug
- 3:02the ears of the deaf. The lame will leap like a deer,
- 3:06and those who cannot speak will sing for joy.
- 3:10Springs will gush forth in the wilderness, and streams will
- 3:13water the wasteland. The parched ground will become a
- 3:17pool, and springs of water will satisfy the thirsty land.
- 3:22Marsh grass and reeds and rushes will flourish where desert
- 3:27jackals once lived, and a great Rd. will go through that once
- 3:32deserted land. It will be named the Highway of
- 3:36holiness. Evil minded people will never
- 3:39travel on it. It will be only for those who
- 3:43walk in God's ways. Fools will never walk there.
- 3:47Lions will not lurk along its course, nor any other ferocious
- 3:52beasts. There will be no other dangers.
- 3:56Only the redeemed will walk on it.
- 3:58Those who have been ransomed by the Lord will return.
- 4:02They will enter Jerusalem singing crowned with everlasting
- 4:06joy. Sorrow and mourning will
- 4:09disappear and they will be filled with joy and gladness.
- 4:25Thank you that you are a creative God who is so good.
- 4:32You know, we often think of remaking things like a house
- 4:36renovation Lord, where we're painting over and knocking out
- 4:40and replacing this bit and that bit.
- 4:42But you are a God of creation. When you want something to be
- 4:49new, you make it new from scratch, from the inside out,
- 4:54from the very heart of the being.
- 4:56You can recreate things to be perfect.
- 5:02Thank you that you don't just apply that to the recreation in
- 5:06terms of the mountains and the fields, but you apply that to
- 5:09us. Oh Lord, we just claim your
- 5:13promise of recreation and all the broken bits in us.
- 5:17They don't need to be renovated, They don't need to be chipped
- 5:19away at. We need your creative life,
- 5:22giving energy through everything that Jesus has done for us to be
- 5:27able to recreate us brand new in your image.
- 5:32So we pray for your recreation every day, that you would
- 5:37recreate our hearts to be in you more like yours, and our spirits
- 5:41to reflect the gifts that you give us.
- 5:47Thank you for being a loving, creative and energetic God.
- 5:54We just praise you and thank you.
- 5:57And it's in the name of Jesus, through whom all of this is
- 6:00possible, that we pray. Amen.
