- 0:00SPEAKER_00: And so I think it's important in our lives to be aware of this.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: The Lord doesn't want us to suffer.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: He wants us to be whole.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: He didn't want this woman in the gospel to suffer.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: He wanted her to be whole.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: But it's such an interesting story because it says,
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: unlike anywhere else in the gospel,
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: that she wasn't suffering from a physical ailment.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: She was rather suffering from a spiritual malady.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: She'd been crippled by a spirit that had her all sort of bent over and twisted up.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: And it was a spiritual problem,
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: a problem of casting out that spirit more than a physical healing.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: That is interesting because that to me points to the other type of suffering,
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: the bad sort of suffering,
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: the suffering that Christ wants to set us free from,
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: and that his physical healings were an image of.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: God does occasionally physically heal people,
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: but the physical healing is a symbol of the spiritual healing,
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: which is what God wants,
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: what he primarily wills for people,
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: that we be healed spiritually from things that are holding us Act
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: that are crippling us, that are causing us suffering.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I don't know about you,
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: but I don't think there's any greater suffering in life than to have some sort
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: of painful or shameful secret from those who we are close to that we live
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: in constant fear of having revealed.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: That is often our situation,
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: I think, because whenever we sin, oftentimes our sin affects other people.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: And then we have this thing and we're always kind of looking over our shoulder.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: We're always held back by this shame and fear that that's going to come out,
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: that someone is going to learn of that.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And that is,
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: that's a debilitating suffering like this woman who's crippled,
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: bent over by a spirit.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: That's the way we're bent over and crippled in our spirit.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: We've got that sort of crippling anxiety and fear that's weighing on our heart all the time.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Oh no, what happens if they find this out?
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: What happens if someone finds this out?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: What will they do?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: What will happen?
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: What will become of me?
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: The Alleluia verse that we had today says, Your word, O Lord, is truth.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Consecrate us in the truth.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: What does it mean to be consecrated in the truth?
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: It means to live free from that sort of crippling truth.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Spirit of fear and suffering that can take over our lives.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: It's so much better to live in the truth.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: And like at the beginning,
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: we talked about that suffering,
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: physical suffering,
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: that sort of pain that we can go through that the Lord wants us to suffer
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: because it's for our healing.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: That can be good and helpful and that can be purifying for us.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And that can help us overcome this sort of spiritual suffering,
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: the suffering of being weighed down by something that's hidden,
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: by something that is there festering inside of us.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: And I think that in the Catholic Church,
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: we have this beautiful gift,
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: which is the sacrament of reconciliation,
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: confession, in which there's always a priest.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: There's a priest here in the cathedral every day of the week.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Here to listen to those things because we have these secrets,
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: these things that are weighing on our hearts,
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: these things which we're fearful that other people will find out.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Maybe we can get the courage to tell those to those whom we're hiding them from.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: If it's a good idea, sometimes it's not, right?
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Sometimes the revelation of something like infidelity, that might destroy a marriage.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: That's not necessarily something that you have to reveal.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: You have to think about that in prudence, weigh that.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: The revelation of certain sins or failings,
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: you don't have to go and shout those from the rooftop.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's not a good idea to do that, but we have to be free of those things.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: We have to get those things off of our heart.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: We can't be carrying this burden around constantly in fear that somebody's going
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: to find out that we're going to be caught.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: The priest is always there.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: He's vowed to secrecy.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: He's there in the sacrament waiting to listen to any of those things.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: If it doesn't even matter if you don't want to receive absolution, you can come into the priest.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter if you're not Catholic.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: You can come in and share those things,
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: get those things out,
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: tell those things to someone who is willing to die rather than
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: to reveal what he hears in confession,
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: because that's the promise that the priest takes.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Whatever he hears in confession goes with him to the grave.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: He has to be willing to die rather than to reveal even whether someone came into
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: the confessional or not.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: If you came and asked me, did that person go to confession?
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: I would have to say, I don't know.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: I don't know because I cannot reveal that.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: That's how sacred that sacrament is.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: That's how sacred that place is.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: It's a place where you can go lay down,
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: get those things off your chest, get rid of those things you're carrying around.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Tell someone those things to let them go.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: And the priest can give you counsel as to whether it might be helpful
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: to tell someone else in your life about that thing,
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: whatever it is,
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: that burden you're carrying,
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: that thing which weighing you down,
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: that which you're constantly afraid will be revealed.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: It's so helpful to get that out.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: If we just hold that inside of us,
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: it becomes this constant gnawing tension, fear that grows within.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And when we can get it out, lay it down, tell someone else, share the burden.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: It's so much more helpful.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: The priest is there in the confessional, in the person of Jesus Christ.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: And that is the healing that Jesus Christ wishes to bring to all of us.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: He wishes to share our burdens,
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: to help us,
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: to take those things,
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: to bear them with us, to guide us into his peace and tranquility.
