- 1:23All right, guys.
- 1:24So without further ado, let's kick this show
- 1:27off.
- 1:27Are you ready?
- 1:28I know I'm ready.
- 1:29Okay.
- 1:29So let's kick it off.
- 1:33So the master topic, how focus shapes daily
- 1:37performance.
- 1:39That's the master topic.
- 1:40It's we're on series five, we're on show
- 1:42number 21, by the way.
- 1:45Oh, who am I?
- 1:45I'm John C.
- 1:46Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 1:51podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, passionate
- 1:55lifelong learner, and now very grateful to be
- 1:58a published author.
- 2:00Yes, guys.
- 2:01I became a published author literally about, well,
- 2:07it was actually the 17th.
- 2:10So tomorrow would actually make it one month
- 2:14that I became a published author.
- 2:16All right, guys.
- 2:17So again, great to have you here and
- 2:19welcome once again to the Inspirations for Your
- 2:22Life show.
- 2:23Whether you're listening to us or whether you're
- 2:25watching us, it's great to have you either
- 2:28way.
- 2:28And tonight I'm focusing on how attention shapes
- 2:33performance in real life.
- 2:36Now, your results are directly, I'm going to
- 2:40say, influenced by where your focus goes.
- 2:44So let's begin.
- 2:45All right.
- 2:47We can start at the very top.
- 2:49I guess that's the best place to start,
- 2:50right?
- 2:51All right.
- 2:53So point number one, focus determines how clearly
- 2:56you think.
- 2:58Focus determines how clearly you think.
- 3:00When focus is stable, thinking becomes organized and
- 3:06structured and also relaxed and not something that
- 3:10takes a lot of energy.
- 3:11So I think that's an important point to
- 3:12note.
- 3:13When we're calm, when we're relaxed, we're able
- 3:16to think and be much more creative and
- 3:20use a lot less energy, right?
- 3:23Number two, guys, attention shapes the quality of
- 3:27every decision.
- 3:29The attention, right?
- 3:31The attention we put towards something or someone.
- 3:35Better focus will always lead us to more
- 3:38accurate and confident choices.
- 3:41That's a given, guys.
- 3:43But a lot of people don't do this.
- 3:46And the reason they don't do this is
- 3:47because they get stuck in the middle.
- 3:50They don't know where they should go.
- 3:52They don't know what they should do.
- 3:53And it becomes a very, very big problem.
- 4:01And so I think that's an important thing
- 4:04to definitely understand.
- 4:07And a lot of people don't get it.
- 4:10They just don't seem to get what that
- 4:14is.
- 4:15And so I think that holds people back,
- 4:19right?
- 4:21I think that holds people back.
- 4:23And for some reason, I think it harms
- 4:29people, all right?
- 4:32It harms people because they don't necessarily know
- 4:36what they're doing, all right?
- 4:41It harms them.
- 4:46And I want to tell you that this
- 4:49is something that can really affect you long
- 4:53-term.
- 4:56And so it might not seem like anything
- 4:59on the surface, but when something holds you
- 5:03back like this, that's something that can stick
- 5:12with you for a very long time, okay?
- 5:20So it can stick with you for a
- 5:22long, long time.
- 5:25I think that's an important point to note,
- 5:29guys, because people will go their entire life,
- 5:32and then they'll wonder why something isn't working
- 5:35a certain way.
- 5:37And I think that happens because, you know,
- 5:41you get stuck, all right?
- 5:43You get stuck, and then you figure, well,
- 5:45how do I get out of this stuckness?
- 5:47And the truth of the matter is you
- 5:48don't get out of it overnight, okay?
- 5:50It takes time to get out of this.
- 5:53Number three, guys, distraction increases mental effort without
- 5:58awareness.
- 5:59So we use more of our energy when
- 6:02we're distracted, okay?
- 6:03And we lose sight of what we're working
- 6:07on, and we probably start to become less
- 6:11efficient.
- 6:12You feel busy, but your output does not
- 6:15increase, and it also, well, goes down in
- 6:18quality often.
- 6:19And that can be hard when you're expelling
- 6:22so much energy.
- 6:23You're like, well, how is this even happening?
- 6:27It's because you're not keeping your eye on
- 6:30your intentions, right?
- 6:32We have to keep our core alignments with
- 6:36us all the time in everything we do.
- 6:37If we don't, then somewhere we're going to
- 6:41find out that we're not where we're supposed
- 6:43to be.
- 6:44Number four, guys, single focus improves speed and
- 6:48clarity.
- 6:49Doing one task at a time increases execution
- 6:53quality.
- 6:54One task, not five, not 10, not three,
- 6:57not 100.
- 6:58Many companies out there don't get this.
- 7:01They think that they can make an employee
- 7:02work so many hours and doing multiple things
- 7:06at one time, and then they wonder why
- 7:09the quality assurance or the customer service or
- 7:11the client service just drops down.
- 7:14I'll tell you why.
- 7:15Because you're multitasking too much.
- 7:19Multitasking reduces execution accuracy.
- 7:21The brain constantly resets between competing inputs, and
- 7:25it's like, what do I need to do?
- 7:27And it's kind of like trying to keep
- 7:28a balance, but it's really wrestling, and it's
- 7:32still using a lot of energy, right?
- 7:34At home, if you put lights on and
- 7:37you're not in the room, it still uses
- 7:38energy.
- 7:38You put TVs on, it still uses energy.
- 7:40Even if you're not watching them, it still
- 7:42uses energy.
- 7:43So the distraction, even if we're not totally
- 7:46aware of that, it still causes our energy
- 7:49to basically drop because it's being used.
- 7:54Number six, guys, energy flows wherever the attention
- 7:57goes.
- 7:58I've said this so many times.
- 7:59So wherever, basically, our attention is focused, that's
- 8:03where the energy is going to flow.
- 8:05So our attention, OK, is going where the
- 8:13energy is flowing, OK?
- 8:15And that's important to know.
- 8:17And where you focus is actually the placement
- 8:24of what determines where your effort drains.
- 8:29If you're wondering why you're not getting where
- 8:31you want to be, well, take a look
- 8:33at your distractions.
- 8:34Take a look at your inputs.
- 8:37Then you can say, oh, wait a minute.
- 8:38Now I see what's happening.
- 8:39I'm constantly getting disrupted, right?
- 8:41I'm constantly getting disrupted.
- 8:43Number seven, guys, interrupted thinking slows performance.
- 8:48Every interruption forces the mind to rebuild context.
- 8:53You know what it makes me think of?
- 8:55Maybe you have a smartphone in your car
- 8:58or a smart player, and every so often,
- 9:03the system has to re-index what's on
- 9:05your device so it can kind of be
- 9:07able to get to them faster.
- 9:09So it kind of says, you know, it
- 9:11usually says something like profiling app or profiling
- 9:14music or something like that.
- 9:16So every interruption forces the mind to rebuild
- 9:19the index and the context because otherwise it's
- 9:24just this big blur.
- 9:26It's a big blur, big blur.
- 9:28Number eight, stable focus improves task completion.
- 9:34Consistent attention leads to more finished work.
- 9:37So my big question, the multi-billionaire question,
- 9:39is why don't people focus on one thing
- 9:41at one time?
- 9:44Because they've been instructed by management, by other
- 9:46people that supposedly know better than them, that
- 9:50you're supposed to focus on multiple things.
- 9:52But I found myself that when I focus
- 9:54on multiple things, those things get off path,
- 9:57off track.
- 9:58I can have multiple things in a queue
- 10:00and working on them and switching back and
- 10:02forth, but I don't work on more than
- 10:04one thing at a time.
- 10:05So if one thing is working and it's
- 10:07taking time to finish, I can come back
- 10:09and do something else.
- 10:10But I don't work on two things at
- 10:12the same time.
- 10:13I wait for something to be done if
- 10:14there's a process.
- 10:16And that's not simultaneously work.
- 10:17Simultaneously working would be like I'm working on
- 10:20something and while I'm doing it, I'm doing
- 10:22something else.
- 10:23So I stop.
- 10:24Once this is done, then I go back
- 10:25and do something else.
- 10:26I don't keep going back and forth while
- 10:28something is processing.
- 10:30Number nine, guys, attention shifts reduce output quality.
- 10:36Frequent shifting will weaken consistency and the flow
- 10:40of that information, the flow of information.
- 10:45Number 10, clarity improves when input is reduced.
- 10:49Less information creates stronger mental organization.
- 10:53Same thing with chat GPT and all these
- 10:55different AI bots.
- 10:56Less is more.
- 10:59Less is more.
- 11:01Number 11, guys, mental noise affects decision speed.
- 11:05Too many thoughts slow down the clarity and
- 11:09your action.
- 11:11And it causes us to pause.
- 11:15Number 12, focus stability improves workflow.
- 11:21Work becomes smoother when attention does not drift.
- 11:25How do you do that?
- 11:26You complete one task, then you move on
- 11:29to the next task.
- 11:32That's how it works, guys.
- 11:35One task and then the next task.
- 11:40Number 13, task switching increases cognitive load.
- 11:45So if you're working on one thing, you're
- 11:46constantly switching from here, switching back and forth,
- 11:48that's multitasking.
- 11:50If you're doing one thing and you finish
- 11:53it, then you move on to another task.
- 11:55So maybe you have a couple of things,
- 11:57and maybe you need to do something or
- 11:59get something started so it can process, and
- 12:02then you can come back to it.
- 12:03Now you're switching tasks, but then you're finishing
- 12:05something else, and then you're coming back.
- 12:06You're not constantly coming back and forth until
- 12:09the other task is done.
- 12:10Every shift you have requires additional mental energy.
- 12:14And it's kind of like being in the
- 12:16car, right?
- 12:17If you put your air conditioner on, it's
- 12:19going to burn more gas.
- 12:22It's going to burn more gas.
- 12:24That's inevitable.
- 12:27And so when that happens, you're like, well,
- 12:31but I wasn't using that.
- 12:33Well, you were.
- 12:33If it was on, you were using it.
- 12:39And you might have a home where you
- 12:42have so many lights.
- 12:43And you're like, but I'm not using them.
- 12:44Yeah, but they're on in your house, so
- 12:46they're still drawing current, still drawing energy.
- 12:48Number 14, guys, awareness of focus improves the
- 12:53control.
- 12:56Awareness of focus improves control.
- 12:59Noticing drift allows you to correct attention faster.
- 13:04But we have to be aware of what
- 13:06drift is, how drift happens.
- 13:09Drift usually happens when we get too confused,
- 13:14when we're off our benchmark, when we keep
- 13:19hopping from one thing to another.
- 13:21Many times when you're cooking, you're multitasking.
- 13:24You're cooking multiple foods at one time.
- 13:25But that's a little bit different, because each
- 13:27food is cooking simultaneously.
- 13:29But you kind of have to move from
- 13:31one to the other to check, make sure
- 13:32they don't burn, stir, things like that.
- 13:35Number 15, guys, execution reflects attention strength.
- 13:40Now, your output always mirrors your focus quality.
- 13:44If you're not happy with the quality that's
- 13:47coming out, examine the input, OK, and the
- 13:57focus you have toward it.
- 13:59Because I'll bet you that you're probably not
- 14:02paying as deep attention as you think you
- 14:05are.
- 14:06Number 16, poor focus creates unfinished work, right?
- 14:13I don't think people mean to have unfinished
- 14:15work, but they put too many things down
- 14:18at a time.
- 14:19So I have my little sheet.
- 14:20I cross things off.
- 14:22When something gets done, I move to the
- 14:24next task.
- 14:26Sometimes I prep a task, because it might
- 14:29take 10 or 15 minutes.
- 14:31That's not simultaneously working.
- 14:33The task might be simultaneously working, but I'm
- 14:36still only working on one project.
- 14:38I'm going to start a task.
- 14:39Maybe it takes 20 minutes.
- 14:40I'm going to go do something else, and
- 14:41I'm going to come back.
- 14:42That's not simultaneously working, OK?
- 14:44If I did one task, and I kept
- 14:46flipping back, forth, back, forth, that would be
- 14:48simultaneously working.
- 14:49We don't want to do that.
- 14:51Starting becomes easier than completing tasks.
- 14:55When we start, we're at the beginning, right?
- 14:58We have a clean slate.
- 14:59When we don't have a task that's completed,
- 15:01it's like, oh my gosh, what am I
- 15:02supposed to do now, right?
- 15:03And you kind of put this big weight
- 15:05on you, and it keeps getting heavier and
- 15:06heavier, and it keeps dragging you down.
- 15:11Number 17, strong focus reduces rework.
- 15:17Clear attention reduces errors and corrections that happen
- 15:21later.
- 15:23I think a lot of people don't realize
- 15:26that when you're not focusing 100%, you're going
- 15:29to make mistakes, right?
- 15:32You're going to make mistakes.
- 15:34Could be something simple.
- 15:35Could be something big.
- 15:35But you're going to make mistakes because you're
- 15:37rushing the process.
- 15:40That happens a lot when people bake.
- 15:43One thing I learned that when I get
- 15:44in the kitchen is that I don't multitask,
- 15:48all right?
- 15:48I put all the stuff that I need
- 15:50to for my mise en place, get it
- 15:52set up, and the only multitasking I'm doing,
- 15:55turn the oven on, and then, but I'm
- 15:56still doing one thing at a time.
- 15:58I'm making the cookies.
- 16:00I'm taking the thing out of the oven,
- 16:01but I'm not doing multiple things.
- 16:03I am checking.
- 16:04So when the timer goes off, I don't
- 16:06pull it out, but I stop the other
- 16:08action, and then I go back.
- 16:10So I really have two actions I flip
- 16:12between.
- 16:13And then if the dough is all done,
- 16:15I will make another batch.
- 16:18But if the oven rings, then I stop
- 16:21everything, and I go grab what's in the
- 16:22oven because I don't want to burn what's
- 16:23in the oven.
- 16:24Number 18, guys, attention drift lowers productivity.
- 16:30Lost focus breaks momentum without warning.
- 16:35I think this is the hard one for
- 16:36a lot of people to grasp, how a
- 16:40loss in focus will get us to detach
- 16:43from quality.
- 16:45It's because things get clearer, foggy.
- 16:49They get more confusing.
- 16:51People just don't know where to start.
- 16:55I'll give you an example.
- 16:56Maybe you're counting money, OK?
- 17:00And you stay focused on that, right?
- 17:02But what about an hour later, if I
- 17:04asked you to remember what money's in there?
- 17:06Would you remember it?
- 17:06Maybe.
- 17:07Suppose I asked you to remember four or
- 17:09five tills.
- 17:09You're probably not going to remember that.
- 17:13So typically, you count.
- 17:14Sometimes people will write the numbers down like
- 17:16they might write this batch.
- 17:17They'll write the numbers so you know what
- 17:18it is.
- 17:22Number 19, guys, intentional focus improves the results.
- 17:26So directed attention proves more meaningful outcomes.
- 17:30When we direct, when we focus on one
- 17:34task at a time.
- 17:40Number 20, guys, reaction-based thinking reduces clarity.
- 17:47That's why I always tell you to be
- 17:49proactive and not reactive.
- 17:52Acting without focus creates confusion, and it creates
- 17:58a delay, OK?
- 18:02That's very important.
- 18:05If you don't have focus, you have a
- 18:07delay.
- 18:08Number 21, guys, structured focus improves the consistency.
- 18:13I said before in other shows, we need
- 18:16structure and we need consistency to have success.
- 18:19If we have structure and no consistency, we
- 18:21don't have success.
- 18:21If we have consistency and no structure, well,
- 18:24then we're just kind of doing whatever we
- 18:25want.
- 18:25We're not having a plan.
- 18:30Repeat attention patterns build reliability.
- 18:33That's why people always want to get you
- 18:35into a successful habit, into a rhythm, we
- 18:39call it.
- 18:39So this way you can move forward.
- 18:41Number 22, distraction creates hidden fatigue.
- 18:45Yeah, mental exhaustion appears without visible progress.
- 18:50And I think this frustrates a lot of
- 18:52people when they feel very tired.
- 18:56Now, there's a physical tired with the body,
- 18:58which you can get from exercise.
- 18:59But then there's also the time your body
- 19:01says, hey, I know I got to rest.
- 19:02I got to take it easy.
- 19:03And you got to listen to your body.
- 19:06Number 23, clear attention improves problem solving.
- 19:11Focus allows faster identification of solutions, of solutions.
- 19:19Number 24, guys, focused work reduces mistakes.
- 19:23Stability and attention improves accuracy and execution.
- 19:28Because when we pay attention to something, we're
- 19:34making sure it's working correctly.
- 19:35If we don't, then that can be a
- 19:39big problem.
- 19:40Something could be very minor, or it could
- 19:43be something major.
- 19:45I'll give you an example.
- 19:46I was on a bus several years ago
- 19:48going to Jackson, Wyoming because the airport, we
- 19:53flew into Boise, Idaho.
- 19:54That's where they flew us because the airport,
- 19:57basically the Jackson, Wyoming airport, was shut down.
- 20:02So we really couldn't fly into that airport.
- 20:05So we had to fly into Boise.
- 20:07And we got off the plane.
- 20:09And then literally, they gave us all this
- 20:11food and snacks.
- 20:13And then we get on a bus.
- 20:15And the bus driver, after three or four
- 20:17hours on the bus, he happened to mention
- 20:20very slightly that he made a wrong turn
- 20:22about an hour ago.
- 20:23And he has to now go back, all
- 20:25because he wasn't paying attention.
- 20:29So you might say, John, attention doesn't really
- 20:31matter.
- 20:31Their attention doesn't matter.
- 20:33But it does.
- 20:34It will cost you.
- 20:36It will be a price.
- 20:37It might not be a financial price.
- 20:40It might be an aggravation cost that you
- 20:42have to redo some work over.
- 20:44And your time is still money, guys.
- 20:46It's still money.
- 20:47Number 25, mental clarity improves execution speed.
- 20:54Mental clarity improves execution speed.
- 20:57Because when you know how to do something,
- 21:00your fingers, your body just goes into that
- 21:03memory mode.
- 21:05You don't even have to think.
- 21:06Clear thinking reduces hesitation.
- 21:09And, of course, any delays that could surface.
- 21:12Any delays that could surface.
- 21:14Number 26, guys, attention discipline improves outcomes.
- 21:20Controlled focus leads to stronger results.
- 21:27Controlling, meaning that you are regulating your behavior.
- 21:33And you're also monitoring it like a feedback
- 21:35loop.
- 21:36If something is good, you leave it where
- 21:38it is.
- 21:39If it's not, then you have to go
- 21:40back and you have to make some adjustments.
- 21:42This is how all the manufacturers work.
- 21:44When they make something and it's not right
- 21:47or it doesn't taste good or it doesn't
- 21:49come out correct, well, they will go ahead
- 21:52and stop everything.
- 21:52And then they'll make a slight adjustment and
- 21:54they'll rerun it and they'll see if everything
- 21:56is good.
- 21:57Number 27, guys, stable thinking improves workflow.
- 22:08Work becomes easier when attention is steady.
- 22:12So when our attention is steady, we're in
- 22:17congruence with what we're going toward.
- 22:22When it's not in good congruence, it's like,
- 22:25I must say, a complete chaos.
- 22:28It's like, I don't understand.
- 22:29I don't get this.
- 22:30I don't get it.
- 22:34So work becomes easier when attention is steady.
- 22:40Number 28, guys, output reflects focus, quality.
- 22:47The quality of the work matches the quality
- 22:50of the attention.
- 22:51We said this before.
- 22:52Number 29, performance improves with awareness.
- 22:58Awareness of focus creates better control over output.
- 23:02What is awareness?
- 23:03It's monitoring.
- 23:04But when we're aware, we suddenly can dial
- 23:10into things like other perceptions.
- 23:12I think that's an important piece.
- 23:16Number 30, guys, focus is the core driver
- 23:19of results.
- 23:22Of results.
- 23:23Every outcome begins with where attention is placed.
- 23:29We talked about this in the very beginning
- 23:31of the show.
- 23:33Wherever our attention goes, that's where the energy
- 23:37is going to flow.
- 23:38So we want to make sure that whatever
- 23:40we're focusing on is what we want.
- 23:43Because if we don't, we're going to be
- 23:46very unhappy, because we're going to be going
- 23:48down a road that we probably don't even
- 23:50want to be part of.
- 23:52So tonight's message is very simple.
- 23:57You do not improve performance by adding effort.
- 24:02Let me say that again.
- 24:03You do not improve performance by adding effort.
- 24:06You do not improve performance by adding effort.
- 24:26So most people think, oh, I got to
- 24:27throw in so much extra time, so much
- 24:29labor.
- 24:30But really all you're doing is you're burning
- 24:31yourself out guys.
- 24:35Control is the secret.
- 24:39It's not let your brain go a million
- 24:42different directions.
- 24:45Okay.
- 24:47Don't let it go a million different directions.
- 24:54I think that's a, I think that's a,
- 24:57I think that's a very important thing to
- 25:03know.
- 25:06And I say this to you because if
- 25:09you don't understand this one concept, you'll be,
- 25:17you'll be wondering why you're going in loops.
- 25:25You'll be going in loops over and over
- 25:26and over again.
- 25:27You'll be like, I don't know why.
- 25:31You'll be going in loops.
- 25:42And I think it's important to understand this.
- 25:53All right.
- 25:54It's absolutely important to, to, to understand this.
- 26:08I think that's an important piece that people
- 26:12just, they just don't get.
- 26:20And that piece can get people to stop.
- 26:26Okay.
- 26:28And the stop can cause people to just
- 26:31change and get people to just change where
- 26:37they are or what they're doing.
- 26:40And I feel that that's something that many
- 26:43people don't realize.
- 26:46But by shifting your attention, your awareness to
- 26:52a different point, to different outcomes, you affect
- 26:57the steps and also the energy that you
- 27:02exert.
- 27:03And that can help or let's say not
- 27:07help with other people.
- 27:10Your energy is what makes something so.
- 27:13Ladies and gentlemen, I am John C.
- 27:15Morley, serial entrepreneur and a lot more.

- 27:21I hope that you guys have a great
- 27:24rest of your evening or rest of your
- 27:26day.
- 27:27And remember, awareness and our attention are key
- 27:32for success.
- 27:34If you do that, guys, your life will
- 27:40change.
- 27:45Your life will change.
- 27:48But don't expect to be an expert on
- 27:50it overnight because you won't.
- 27:53You'll get a little more aware each time.
- 27:55Have a good one, everyone, and be well.
