- 0:12Speaker 1: this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Our thoughts and prayers obviously to Ford Escape owners because
- 0:20Speaker 2: they are the most unreliable cars, according to a list
- 0:23Speaker 2: put out by Consumer New Zealand. Brian wall As, a
- 0:25Speaker 2: product test journalist at Consumer who wrote this list and
- 0:28Speaker 2: is with us. Hi Brian, Hi, there, what's the problem
- 0:31Speaker 2: with the fold Escape? Why they break down so often?
- 0:34Speaker 1: Oh?
- 0:35Speaker 3: Ah, that would be down to engine, transmission and electrical
- 0:39Speaker 3: issues from what we've found in our survey. Yeah, okay,
- 0:42Speaker 3: so transmission repairs.
- 0:44Speaker 2: What does that mean Brian.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Well, it means that the cars were off road for
- 0:50Speaker 3: probably an extended period of time because the engine wasn't working,
- 0:53Speaker 3: or the gearbox has failed, or there's an electrical problem.
- 0:56Speaker 2: And does this would because I mean, this kind of
- 0:58Speaker 2: stuff happens to cars eventually, right, they get old and
- 1:01Speaker 2: I'm assuming the transmission breaks down at some point. Is
- 1:03Speaker 2: this happening when the cars are still relatively new and
- 1:06Speaker 2: you wouldn't expect it?
- 1:08Speaker 3: Well, the survey looks at a range of vehicles over
- 1:11Speaker 3: you know, ten to fifteen years, so it's difficult to
- 1:14Speaker 3: say that a new car is going to be less
- 1:17Speaker 3: reliable than an old or vice versa, but generally refining
- 1:21Speaker 3: with the ford escapes, they're going to end up with
- 1:23Speaker 3: major issues eventually, which are going to cost a lot
- 1:26Speaker 3: of money to repair.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Vw T one. What's the problem there.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Let me just check my results here. We've I think
- 1:34Speaker 3: we found like half of Tiguan owners experienced a fault
- 1:37Speaker 3: during their ownership and a quarter experienced a major fault.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I mean that's a fault, like we say, where the
- 1:43Speaker 3: vehicle's got to be off road. And part of the
- 1:46Speaker 3: issue with the European car is generally that the parts
- 1:49Speaker 3: are more expensive, So you know, it's people aren't as
- 1:52Speaker 3: satisfied with their vehicles because it's not a much more
- 1:55Speaker 3: expensive car to repair.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Have you put out a list of the most reliable cabs?
- 2:01Speaker 3: We do have a list of reliable as well.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Yes, what's the top of that list then, Brian.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Well, the top of some Toyotas. We've got the CHR
- 2:08Speaker 3: and have four So the vehicles we see a lot
- 2:10Speaker 3: of on the roads and people are very very happy
- 2:12Speaker 3: with them, and they seem to be very reliable. So yeah,
- 2:16Speaker 3: go for a Toyota.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Okay, can I like I know that this is I'm
- 2:19Speaker 2: going to sound snobby and bearing in mind I know
- 2:22Speaker 2: nothing about cars. It's all esthetic for me. So have
- 2:24Speaker 2: you got anything on your list of most reliable cars
- 2:27Speaker 2: that's actually quite cool?
- 2:29Speaker 3: Oh? I think that's beauty is in the eye of
- 2:32Speaker 3: the holder, isn't it really? I mean, because we can
- 2:34Speaker 3: take the.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Red four off the list of cool cars though, can't we?
- 2:37Speaker 3: Rite Yeah, I'd probably agree with you on that. I
- 2:39Speaker 3: don't even like the look of the CHR. Do you
- 2:41Speaker 3: like the Corolla? Because the Corolla is up there? You know,
- 2:43Speaker 3: it's good looking little car, But can you do any
- 2:47Speaker 3: better if you want to go for an EV We've
- 2:52Speaker 3: got the MG fours up there at the moment. We're
- 2:54Speaker 3: having quite high reliabilities. It's quite a stylish looking vehicle
- 2:58Speaker 3: and relatively cheap compared to a lot of other evs
- 3:01Speaker 3: at the moment. But it's early days with evs as
- 3:04Speaker 3: to whether they're going to remain reliable in the long term,
- 3:07Speaker 3: because you know, quite a lot of the manufacturers haven't
- 3:09Speaker 3: actually been on the market for that many years.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Good point that you make, Brian. It's wonderful to talk
- 3:13Speaker 2: to you. Thank you for that MG four Brian Wall
