- 0:00Happy Saturday y'all, welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:03This is friendly. I hope that everyone headed into
- 0:07the weekend yesterday feeling refreshed, or at least you are
- 0:10getting some time to slow down and reset.
- 0:13But today we are going to be continuing in First
- 0:16Thessalonians. We're actually finishing out the
- 0:18last chapter, but I am going to break it up into two different
- 0:23episodes because we actually get a pretty long list of really
- 0:29practical instructions for how believers should live.
- 0:33But I really don't want us to fly through it and miss how
- 0:37helpful it can actually be. The big theme behind all these
- 0:41instructions that Paul gives us is this question, how do we live
- 0:47as we inch closer to Jesus's return?
- 0:50Paul just finished in the passage above talking about the
- 0:54day of the Lord and staying spiritually awake and alert.
- 0:57So naturally that next question becomes, OK, So what does this
- 1:02actually look like in daily life?
- 1:04True application. So let me go ahead and read.
- 1:08We're going to be in chapter 5, verses 12 through 15 today.
- 1:14Dear brothers and sisters, make sure that you show your deep
- 1:18appreciation for those who cherish you and diligently work
- 1:22as ministers among you, for they are your leaders who care for
- 1:27you, teach you, and stand before the Lord on your behalf.
- 1:32They value you with great love because of their service to you.
- 1:36Let peace reign among yourselves.
- 1:39We appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, to instruct those
- 1:43who are not in their place of battle.
- 1:46Be skilled at gently encouraging those who feel themselves
- 1:50inadequate. Be faithful to stand your
- 1:53ground, help the weak to stand again.
- 1:56Be quick to demonstrate patience with everyone, resist revenge
- 2:02and make sure that no one pays back evil and place of evil.
- 2:06But always pursue doing what is beautiful to one another and to
- 2:11all the unbelievers. OK, so there's several
- 2:15instructions packed in here, but today I want to focus on two big
- 2:19themes that Paul highlights. First of all, Paul begins by
- 2:24encouraging believers to acknowledge and to appreciate
- 2:27those who labor among them spiritually.
- 2:30And yes, that absolutely includes pastors, elders, church
- 2:35leaders. I think that that is primarily
- 2:37what Paul is referencing. But I do want to consider it's
- 2:42not limited to them. I want us to think about the
- 2:45people that God has placed in our lives who have helped shape
- 2:49our faith. If you're a believer, maybe it
- 2:52is a Bible study leader. It could be a mentor or a parent
- 2:56who raised you in the faith. It could even be a friend who
- 2:59prays with you or a sibling who encourages you in your walk with
- 3:02Jesus. Because under the new covenant,
- 3:06believers are actually called a royal priesthood.
- 3:09We see this in first Peter 29 that says we are a chosen
- 3:13people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.
- 3:16So God uses ordinary believers to minister to one another all
- 3:21the time. And Paul reminds us to not
- 3:24overlook that because it can be easy to walk into church,
- 3:30consume a good message, leave, and repeat the same thing the
- 3:33next week. I believe that Paul is really
- 3:36underlining, don't forget the people who are pouring into you
- 3:40spiritually because encouragement is so powerful.
- 3:44Proverbs 1821 says death and life are in the power of the
- 3:49tongue. And I think that First
- 3:52Thessalonians, that is the biggest theme throughout the
- 3:55entire letter that Paul writes, how important encouragement is
- 3:59because our words literally have the ability to build people up
- 4:03or to tear them down. And for people who are
- 4:06dedicating time, energy, and sometimes a lot of unseen
- 4:11sacrifice to serve the church, encouragement matters more than
- 4:15we probably realize. Sometimes the most meaningful
- 4:18thing you could do is simply tell someone, Hey, God really
- 4:22used what you spoke to. Minister to my heart or thank
- 4:26you for pouring into me. Here's what the Lord has been
- 4:29teaching me lately. It doesn't have to be some long
- 4:32essay or written out speech, but when you do that, you're
- 4:36actually showing them the fruit of their labor.
- 4:40And Paul also connects this with living and peaceful harmony with
- 4:43one another because when the body of Christ is united in love
- 4:48and respect for each other, it is such a powerful testimony.
- 4:53The truth is many of us probably would not be where we are today
- 4:56spiritually without the faithfulness of those people who
- 5:00invested their time and energy again and again.
- 5:04So one reflection question could be, who are the people that have
- 5:08helped shape my faith and how can I encourage them today or
- 5:12this week? Now Paul shifts to another
- 5:17responsibility that believers have.
- 5:19He says to warn those who are idle, to encourage the
- 5:23discouraged, help the weak and be patient with everyone.
- 5:27That's the NIV translation. And the picture here is also
- 5:31powerful. Paul is basically describing
- 5:33people who are spiritually vulnerable, some people who are
- 5:37not walking with the Lord, people who are discouraged or
- 5:40weak. And whether they realize it or
- 5:43not, they're not standing in their place of battle
- 5:46spiritually, meaning that they're vulnerable.
- 5:50And that's where believers have to step in.
- 5:53But in order to help others, we have to stay rooted ourselves.
- 5:58So that means continually pursuing Jesus by staying
- 6:02grounded in God's Word through prayer, both personal prayer and
- 6:07group prayer, and accountability through Christian community.
- 6:11Because when we're spiritually grounded, we're able to notice
- 6:14the needs all around us. Paul gives us some examples.
- 6:19If someone is living in continuous sin, Scripture says
- 6:23that we lovingly call them back to truth.
- 6:26Galatians 61 tells us that those who live by the Spirit should
- 6:30restore people gently. Proverbs 27 five says better is
- 6:35an open rebuke than hidden love. Truth spoken with grace actually
- 6:42brings freedom. And if someone is discouraged or
- 6:46faint hearted, we build them up. We uplift them.
- 6:50Sometimes people just need someone to remind them of what
- 6:54their strengths are, their true calling, and who God says they
- 6:57are in His word. If someone is weak, we get to
- 7:02help them. Paul talks about this idea of
- 7:05sharing burdens. Galatians 62 carry each other's
- 7:08burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
- 7:13Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is just pray for
- 7:18them and over them, interceding for someone standing in the gap
- 7:23for them, just as Jesus does for us as our high priest.
- 7:28One of my favorite things that some of my friends and I do is
- 7:32we will check in and send each other prayer requests, literally
- 7:35just texting, and we will send each other a voice memo, praying
- 7:39over each other over that specific request.
- 7:44There is so much significance in that and with technology these
- 7:49days, we have such easy access to doing that immediately.
- 7:53We don't have to be with them in the physical realm.
- 7:56We can literally be with them in spirit and speak into them
- 8:00through a voice memo or through a phone call.
- 8:04And then Paul ends with something that might be the
- 8:06hardest instruction of them all. Be patient with everyone.
- 8:12Patience is one of those traits that makes us look the most like
- 8:16Jesus, I believe, because it is so contrary to our natural flesh
- 8:22and our tendencies. But when people see patience,
- 8:26when they see our compassion and our forgiveness in action, they
- 8:31see something different. They see something that points
- 8:35beyond us, beyond our human capabilities.
- 8:39It points to Jesus. Jesus taught in his ministry to
- 8:45turn the other cheek, to love your enemies, to pray for those
- 8:49who persecute you, as seen in Matthew 5.
- 8:53And Paul also reminds believers to look to the interests of
- 8:57others in Philippians 2, four. Now, all of this can sound hard,
- 9:02and honestly it is. But it's not meant to be easy.
- 9:08Because when believers live in a way that's radically different
- 9:12from the world, people start noticing.
- 9:15And that difference, that factor, it points them to God.
- 9:20I actually had a conversation with someone recently who said
- 9:23the biggest reason that she did not want to be a Christian was
- 9:29because of her experiences and encounters with people who claim
- 9:33to be Christ followers. She said some of the most
- 9:36self-centered and rude people that she had met were ones that
- 9:39said they were Christians. And that really hurt me, that
- 9:44conversation. It stuck with me because
- 9:48although we cannot control how everyone acts or who they claim
- 9:53to follow and what they believe, Scripture does say that a tree
- 9:57is known by its fruit in Matthew 7.
- 10:00So I just want to say if we are truly anchored in Jesus, if
- 10:06we're connected to him as the vine like he talks about in John
- 10:0915, then his life should produce good fruit in US.
- 10:15Fruit of Lovejoy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
- 10:21faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
- 10:25No, it's not going to look perfect, but these should always
- 10:29be increasing as we follow Him every day.
- 10:32So a final reflection question for us today could be, does the
- 10:37way I live draw people toward Jesus or does it push them away
- 10:42from Him? My challenge for all of us is
- 10:47let's be people whose lives make others curious about the
- 10:51goodness of God as seen in our lives.
- 10:54As we are transformed daily and daily sanctified to become more
- 10:59like Jesus, let it be transparent that there is
- 11:01something different about us and about our hearts that can only
- 11:06be found in him. So let's go ahead and close in
- 11:09prayer. Lord, thank you for the
- 11:15knowledge and wisdom in your word.
- 11:18Thank you for the people that you have blessed us with in our
- 11:21lives, who have helped guide us in our faith.
- 11:25I pray that you would help us to be more intentional about
- 11:28encouraging them, showing gratitude for the ways that they
- 11:31have poured into us. God, would you give us
- 11:35sensitivity to the needs of people around us more and more?
- 11:40May we recognize when someone is struggling, when someone is
- 11:44discouraged or weak, and would you give us the courage and
- 11:47compassion to respond to them in love?
- 11:51May we speak truth with grace. Help us to carry one another's
- 11:56burdens, to truly be patient with everyone even when it is so
- 12:01hard. And most of all, would you help
- 12:04our lives reflect the fruit of your Spirit so that others see
- 12:08something different in US that truly points them to you?
- 12:13We pray this in your name, Jesus.
- 12:16Amen. OK y'all.
- 12:18Well, that is what I have today. I'm praying that the Lord speaks
- 12:22to your heart and that He would give you just tangible
- 12:26opportunities this weekend, today to encourage someone and
- 12:30show them the love of Christ. Have a great rest of your
- 12:34Saturday and I'll see y'all in the next episode.
