Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Still Sad About The "Earnhardt" Documentary? My Thoughts On Dad's Born in The 1950's | Coffee With Kenny
Transcript
- 0:00Happy Friday, everybody. Well, all right, today we are
- 0:06going to talk about the dads. Your father that was born in the
- 0:111950s, that is close to 70 or over 70 years old right now.
- 0:21So my daughter Brandy has been watching this Earnhardt
- 0:26documentary, and I've been watching Brandy go through all
- 0:31these emotions, and my middle daughter Brandy has lit my phone
- 0:36up. She has been emotionally
- 0:39scarred. I'm telling you, man, I'm
- 0:43serious. I am not lying.
- 0:45I mean, it's like, Dad, if I could give Dale, Junior and
- 0:51Kelly a hug right now. Oh my God, I, I would they're
- 0:55they've been so hurt and and dad, they're Oh my God, I feel
- 1:00so bad. And did you Dad, this is Brandy
- 1:04saying this to me. Dad, did you know that Dale
- 1:07Junior ran 154 late model stock races and Dale Senior neighbor
- 1:14never came to one of his races? Dad, I about cried when Kelly
- 1:21came to take care of Dale Junior.
- 1:24So today's Coffee with Kenny is about dads that were born in the
- 1:311950s. So I I like studying people.
- 1:40I am into psychology. I always have been one of my
- 1:46heroes. The great Dick Trickle was the
- 1:48great philosopher. Trickle has taught me so many
- 1:54sayings that that's basically what helped me get through life.
- 2:01The great Dick Trickle, my brother Rusty Wallace, Kenny
- 2:07Schrader, they taught me some good things too.
- 2:12But I want to tell you what I've learned about the dads that were
- 2:18born in the 50s. So this could be like like I was
- 2:23born August 23rd, 1963, but I want to go by the signs first.
- 2:29Like I'm a Virgo, but I'm barely a Virgo.
- 2:34I'm August 23rd, August 22nd. Just one day before is I believe
- 2:42a Leo, my brother. But I really think it has to do
- 2:48with the year you were born. So let me start out by saying
- 2:52this and you can respond right here.
- 2:55OK? Your father is going to be a
- 3:01chip off the old block. So let's take Brother Rusty,
- 3:05let's take Dale Senior, let's take Kenny Schrader.
- 3:12Those three, what do they have in common?
- 3:18Well, their dads were racers and they were exposed to fathers
- 3:23that their parents went through the depression.
- 3:28So let's take let's just take my dad.
- 3:33Let let me go like this. But I'm pretty sure my situation
- 3:38is going to be like Dale senior situation.
- 3:43I'm kind of right in the middle there.
- 3:45I'm I'm lost in translation, translation.
- 3:51There is this story one time that me and Bobby Labonte were
- 3:56the forgotten NASCAR drivers. Of course nobody's going to
- 3:59forget about Bobby Labonte because he's a champion.
- 4:02He did a lot. But there was an article one
- 4:04time out there about that 1963, the year Kennedy was killed.
- 4:12But when I think of this Dale senior, this Earnhardt
- 4:17documentary, I think, OK, why was he like that?
- 4:21Why was Dale Senior hard? Why was he tough?
- 4:25Why was he rough around the edges?
- 4:29Rusty Wallace is pretty much identical.
- 4:32Kenny Schrader pretty much identical.
- 4:37So what do they have in common? Well, I witnessed the first hand
- 4:44so I'm exactly right and I know what they have in common.
- 4:49So my brother Rusty saw first hand that my dad Russ got up at
- 4:564:00 in the morning and delivered the post dispatch,
- 5:02then went to work at King Dodge down on Kings Highway.
- 5:08Then my dad had these payment books stacked in his office,
- 5:12like 4 or five payment books. Hey, dad, what's all them
- 5:16payment books? Herman, if you want anything
- 5:21life, you're going to have to borrow money or else you're not
- 5:23going to get anywhere. I love my father very much.
- 5:28My dad, the great Russ Wallace, the boy boy, old boy.
- 5:33Was he rough around the edges? I don't know if my dad ever told
- 5:36me he loved me. I know that.
- 5:39My brother Rusty, for Rusty Wallace to say he loves me,
- 5:44that's like going to the dentist.
- 5:47I don't think Rusty's ever told me he's loved me.
- 5:50Now Mike has. I love Kenny Schrader to death,
- 5:55but his dad, Bill, he was a bad ass.
- 5:59But I'm going to talk about what I know for a fact.
- 6:04Your father, even though he didn't go through the
- 6:06Depression, his dad, he watched his dad.
- 6:13So it's a line of progression. I'm around.
- 6:18I'm around Kyle Petty all the time.
- 6:21And Kyle and myself, we're tight and I tell Kyle Petty.
- 6:25I say, Kyle, I'm afraid of the king.
- 6:28I'm afraid of Richard Petty. Kyle looks at me in the face and
- 6:32goes, me too, man. So the reason Dale Senior, most
- 6:40likely the reason the way he was is because Ralph probably had
- 6:45Dale Senior and said, OK boy, you're lucky I had you.
- 6:51And that's where it ends with dads back in those days.
- 6:56Now talk about 180° difference. Kenny here, little Kenny, born
- 7:03in 1963. My Mama Judy, she raised me.
- 7:08Now, she was rough around the edges too.
- 7:10And mom's watching this and Mama smile because, you know, I'm
- 7:15right. We just had this talk.
- 7:19My Mama grew up in the city of Baltimore and she was on defense
- 7:24all the time. And still to this day, my mom
- 7:27Judy is on defense. What that means is you're never
- 7:34going to get her and she's always got her guard up and
- 7:38she's coming after you whether you're like it or not.
- 7:41And she's coming after you whether she thinks she's doing
- 7:43it or not, but she's coming after you at all times.
- 7:46So to understand your mom and dad, you got to know what they
- 7:49went through. I know what my dad went through.
- 7:53My dad was a bad ass, but boys, he rough around the edges.
- 7:58I think all of us want our mom and dads to love us, right?
- 8:01We just want unconditional love. Don't want none of that bull
- 8:05where they're going to tell you what to do and what you did
- 8:08wrong. You just want your mom and dad
- 8:10to go look, I love you, you know, like me right now.
- 8:14I'm a soft dad now. I had to.
- 8:18I discipline my kids when they need a discipline.
- 8:21I whipped Brooke's ass one night and I felt awful and I still
- 8:26feel bad about it. If she's watching the shoot, she
- 8:29remembers it. All my girls do.
- 8:32They got an ass whipping when they deserved it.
- 8:34But I didn't beat my kids. But one thing they got, they got
- 8:39reassurance that I love them. Brooke, Brandy, Brittany, come
- 8:43here. Look me in the face.
- 8:45I love you. Dad loves you.
- 8:47Now get the outside. You're driving me nuts.
- 8:52That's the way. That's the way I do it.
- 8:55So the earn our documentary. I'm sure Ralph raised Dale
- 9:01Senior the way Ralph was raised, and then eventually it Peters
- 9:07out. So don't you know that Dale
- 9:10Junior and Amy are going to raise those two little girls
- 9:15with kid gloves? Just gold.
- 9:18I listen to Bless Your Heart. It's a wonderful show by Amy and
- 9:23Dale Junior and they tell a story about those two girls and
- 9:28it's it's a great show, but you can just tell how much they love
- 9:31them. To my friend Dale Junior and
- 9:34Amy, I'm not sure if you're going to watch this.
- 9:37Dale Junior tells me this. Kenny Wallace, I don't miss
- 9:40anything you put out. And I think that's why Dale
- 9:44Junior called me. And I think that's why we're
- 9:46partners in crime right now. Kenny Conversation lives over on
- 9:52Dale Junior's Dirty MO Medium. Herman Schrader lives on Dale
- 9:57Junior's Dirty MO Media. I text Dale Junior all the time.
- 10:02I said, buddy, I love you. Thank you for that, Kenny.
- 10:06I text Dale Junior, my daughter's really affected by
- 10:09this. Keep it coming.
- 10:10I want to know everything. So what I want everybody to know
- 10:15out there is Dale Junior and Amy are going to raise those kids
- 10:24the way their daddy did not raise them.
- 10:27And the same with me. The same with me.
- 10:31Now, my Mama loves me and she raised me and I love my dad, but
- 10:37my dad was rough around the edges.
- 10:40And I know he loved me, but he was rough around the edges,
- 10:45Brother Rusty, he's rough around the edges.
- 10:49Schrader. I would never tell anybody how
- 10:53to raise their kids, but I can tell you when they're rough
- 10:55around the edges and I can tell you when they're a lover.
- 10:59So no matter what way you were raised, there's a reason.
- 11:04And it wasn't right. It wasn't right, but you were
- 11:08raised the way you were raised for a reason.
- 11:11And I can tell you, my dad grew up in the city of Saint Louis,
- 11:16and he watched his dad sell vacuum cleaners door to door.
- 11:20Sometimes you get on the wrong side of the track.
- 11:23My brother Rusty cannot tell me he loves me.
- 11:26Why the is that? What is the deal there?
- 11:32My daughter Brooke. I say I love you.
- 11:34Brooke. She goes.
- 11:34Me too. That's why I tease.
- 11:38That's why I call my daughter Brooke the alpha female.
- 11:42I say, Brooke, why don't you tell me you love me back?
- 11:46Because you make too big of a deal out of it.
- 11:48Dad. Brooke, do you tell?
- 11:51Do you tell Charlotte and Mealy you love them?
- 11:57It's so important to like look your kids right in the eyeballs
- 12:01and say I love you. You're everything to me.
- 12:06That's all it takes. And it just calms everything
- 12:08down a little bit. So I'm sure that the reason Dale
- 12:15Senior raised while he wasn't even around at times, right?
- 12:24But it's a tough road and I can tell you this.
- 12:28Do not let your childhood define the man you become.
- 12:34I think the reason I'm awesome is because my Mama Judy saved
- 12:39the day. My mom gave me so much love.
- 12:43It was unreal. She was a bad ass.
- 12:47I love my dad, but I was afraid of my dad.
- 12:52I'm a child of the 60s. All it took was my Mama to say
- 12:57wait till your father comes home.
- 13:00I'm scared to death. Schrader, Rusty Dale senior born
- 13:06in the 50s. Their dads remember their dads
- 13:12because they were born and learned about the Depression.
- 13:16They're on defense. Holy, I got kids.
- 13:19How am I going to raise them? It ain't easy, everybody.
- 13:25So when you see Dale Junior and you see Amy, tell him you love
- 13:29him. Have a great day everybody.
