- 0:30Here's the upgrade. You may think generosity starts
- 0:33with your wallet, but upgraded thinking knows it starts with
- 0:35your ear tuning into the gift already sitting in front of you
- 0:39and then investing in it. Here's the story.
- 0:43A tuner spends his life listening for the note.
- 0:45That's almost right. Close but not true, and his job
- 0:49is to bring it into pitch, to take something with potential
- 0:52and make it ring the way it was built, to ring Bill Magnuson
- 0:55tunes pianos. But one day he tuned into a
- 0:59little boy. The boy is Jude Kofi.
- 1:02He's autistic, and he taught himself to play on a forgotten
- 1:05keyboard in the in the basement of his family home.
- 1:08No lessons. He had never played before in
- 1:10his life when his father Isaiah walked in and heard him and
- 1:14stopped him in his tracks. Bill later called what Jude does
- 1:17Mozart level, coming from somewhere beyond the whole world
- 1:22heard a nice news story. Bill heard something else He
- 1:25heard a gift that was close but not yet true.
- 1:29A rare talent playing on the wrong instrument in the wrong
- 1:31room with nobody bringing it into pitch.
- 1:34So he did what a tuner does. He didn't know the family.
- 1:37He took a meaningful piece of his own inheritance, though, and
- 1:40put a $15,000 grand piano at their door, plus lifetime tuning
- 1:45in lessons. No conditions, no strings
- 1:48attached. He just invested in the note he
- 1:51heard. CBS updated a segment a few days
- 1:54ago from the original story. Now, six years later, Judas 14,
- 2:00he's recorded his debut album. He tours, he's played
- 2:03internationally. Build it and create the gift.
- 2:06He takes no credit for it. He just tuned into it.
- 2:09And then he got behind him. He said, quote, I just bought a
- 2:13piano and that's all I did. All the rest of this stuff is
- 2:16God. It's not me.
- 2:17End Quote. Isaiah said for somebody to just
- 2:21love your son like that by making sure his future is
- 2:25secured, we're super thankful. I'm not doing the story justice.
- 2:29You should really find a video on it.
- 2:32But the better story to tell yourself is I need to tune into
- 2:35the gift in front of me and then invest in it.
- 2:39You can choose to tune things out or tune into them.
- 2:43You're surrounded by notes that are close but not true.
- 2:47A gift in someone near you playing quietly in the basement,
- 2:51waiting on one person with the ear to hear it and the will to
- 2:54invest. Most people walk past.
- 2:58A tuner leans in. You may be the person who's
- 3:01called to tune into the gift of someone special you've come
- 3:04across. Tell me a story of a gift you
- 3:07tuned into at from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:10Send someone a text and tell them I hear what you're capable
- 3:13of. Keep up the good work.
