- 0:00Speaker 1: Anthony Rizzo, David Ross, Matt Caesar, Chris Coughlin, Albert Almora.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Take one.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome back to another episode of The Lovable Reunion Podcast.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Today we have three very special guests, Matt Caesar, Chris
- 0:22Speaker 1: Coglin and Albert Almira, three huge parts of our team,
- 0:28Speaker 1: more on their role side, more not on the everyday side.
- 0:31Speaker 1: So it's going to be fun to be able to
- 0:32Speaker 1: pick their brains and see their vision of what twenty
- 0:35Speaker 1: sixteen look like and relive the memories Fellas.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
- 0:40Speaker 3: More relatable to my role than's everyday role. We're gonna
- 0:44Speaker 3: talk about. We're going to talk about what it's like
- 0:48Speaker 3: to grind and not make a lot of money and yeah,
- 0:51Speaker 3: and try to be a part of the team.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I think season starts with you. You were here. When
- 0:56Speaker 2: did you get drafted? Ten? Yeah?
- 0:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean Seas and I were workout partners every spring,
- 1:04Speaker 1: what like five thirty six am.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Sees would push me every day in the gym. He's
- 1:10Speaker 2: in peak shape.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Still on my grind, You're still on like a animal.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean I think it was it was
- 1:16Speaker 1: you pushing me as well. I mean you came up
- 1:18Speaker 1: and I remember it was a twenty fourteen you came over?
- 1:21Speaker 2: When did you come over? Twelve? Twenty twelve? Yeah, dominated
- 1:24Speaker 2: triple A.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I remember dead lifting the house with you,
- 1:29Speaker 1: doing pull ups and stuff with Buttery.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I mean it was just you know, it's it's it's
- 1:33Speaker 1: so it's so relatable now because you're always looking for
- 1:35Speaker 1: a workout partner.
- 1:37Speaker 2: And I think that's what makes people better.
- 1:38Speaker 1: That's what made our team better is because everybody was
- 1:41Speaker 1: was there trying to get better.
- 1:42Speaker 2: They knew their role and they just wanted to be
- 1:44Speaker 2: the best of the role.
- 1:45Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:45Speaker 2: One of the things that.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Lester said to me at one time was like, you know,
- 1:50Speaker 1: it doesn't matter if you're number one guy on the
- 1:52Speaker 1: roster or number twenty five got in the roster. Everybody's
- 1:55Speaker 1: family here. And I think that that is a real
- 1:58Speaker 1: testament to why we won. White teams do win. Yeah,
- 2:01Speaker 1: That's what we've been talking about a lot, is every
- 2:04Speaker 1: single piece of the puzzle is a reason we want.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Without every single person, there's no way we win. And
- 2:12Speaker 1: I mean each one of you probably got I think
- 2:14Speaker 1: you may have gotten the most of bats that year.
- 2:16Speaker 1: In sixteen two hundred ish yeah, CC, you got traded
- 2:19Speaker 1: over at the deadline. AL you have you're a rookie.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Yeah, but you were missing.
- 2:25Speaker 4: They brought you back. No, that is that was awesome. Stinks,
- 2:28Speaker 4: and then it was awesome. I was so depressed, but
- 2:32Speaker 4: then I was so happy when I came back.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Alwhen you're a rookie, you're dracked in the first round,
- 2:38Speaker 1: young out of high school and you get called up
- 2:40Speaker 1: to this team. What do you think because you're coming
- 2:42Speaker 1: into the big boys, right, we're steamrolling everyone.
- 2:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it all so coming into the show,
- 2:50Speaker 5: you you have this perception of like, hey, you're a
- 2:54Speaker 5: young guy, like stay quiet, stay of yourself, like don't
- 2:57Speaker 5: do anything now, just play baseball and go home.
- 2:59Speaker 3: And uh.
- 3:00Speaker 5: I actually shared this story with ROSSI yes show that
- 3:03Speaker 5: one of the full first moments that impacted me in
- 3:05Speaker 5: the league was first day, first game.
- 3:09Speaker 4: He sat right next to me in my locker and
- 3:10Speaker 4: he's like.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Hey, I don't care if you're a rookie, I don't
- 3:12Speaker 5: care if you have ten years in the show, Like
- 3:14Speaker 5: you're here to help us win.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Be yourself and act like.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Yourself and and just don't don't play with any pressure.
- 3:20Speaker 6: And that took so much off of me and just
- 3:22Speaker 6: let me be me.
- 3:23Speaker 5: And I'm quiet to to it's on its own, but
- 3:26Speaker 5: it let it just let me just go out there
- 3:27Speaker 5: and not be afraid to make mistakes. And it really
- 3:30Speaker 5: impacted my career.
- 3:31Speaker 3: He said, that means a lot. That's cool.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Damn, look at you.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I got a thrice choked up earlier telling me his feelings.
- 3:40Speaker 1: When I got called up in San Diego, I had
- 3:42Speaker 1: some veterans that were the complete opposite of that. And
- 3:46Speaker 1: I stunk in Sande at my time in Santing, it
- 3:48Speaker 1: was stunk, and I said to myself, I'll never be
- 3:51Speaker 1: like that as a veteran.
- 3:52Speaker 2: You had some good stories of veterans.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Too, say say, say I can't my coffee.
- 3:59Speaker 7: You already everybody knows who that is, who's that?
- 4:03Speaker 2: Well? You know so here and ROSSI said.
- 4:07Speaker 1: When I get called up to Chicago, Brian Depster does
- 4:10Speaker 1: the same exact thing to me. He goes, hey, man,
- 4:13Speaker 1: we stink like we're on our way to losing one
- 4:15Speaker 1: hundred games. And he's like, but you're gonna help us win,
- 4:17Speaker 1: and you be you and don't change a thing like
- 4:20Speaker 1: exactly what you said verbatim, And that helped me so
- 4:24Speaker 1: hearing that from you as well.
- 4:26Speaker 3: And over the journey of my career too, like coming
- 4:28Speaker 3: up and the oldest guy in the room, right, certain
- 4:31Speaker 3: guys were hard on you. Certain guys are your friend.
- 4:34Speaker 3: But the more I was in the league, you learn
- 4:36Speaker 3: like we need everybody to win, Like, so I want
- 4:38Speaker 3: the I want the guy that's the most insecurity to
- 4:41Speaker 3: feel the most comfortable so he can have his skill
- 4:43Speaker 3: set and help us win ball games. And you're a
- 4:46Speaker 3: better I was a better player. I was more comfortable
- 4:49Speaker 3: as we all are, right, and you you turn into
- 4:51Speaker 3: a kid again. So having that pressure of like you know,
- 4:54Speaker 3: trying to perform for your teammates are stuff outside of
- 4:57Speaker 3: just caring, you realize unhelp anybody. So that was that
- 5:02Speaker 3: was a lot learned because of how you know, you
- 5:04Speaker 3: get treated early on from some other guys and you're
- 5:06Speaker 3: like he still looking back, like I hated that motherfucker.
- 5:09Speaker 8: You know, there's some guys that we hated a lot
- 5:12Speaker 8: different too, Like the game changed so much, But I
- 5:16Speaker 8: do think on the teams I played on, it was
- 5:19Speaker 8: for sure really cool.
- 5:21Speaker 7: I thought we did such a good job welcoming but
- 5:24Speaker 7: still ribbing and never but not like hey, Cec, I'm
- 5:28Speaker 7: gonna freezer suit and cut your suit up and you're
- 5:30Speaker 7: not gonna get your clothes shaving cream your shoes and like,
- 5:34Speaker 7: hey me get in the back and dress like a
- 5:37Speaker 7: check can go serve everybody stuff and you're like, bro,
- 5:40Speaker 7: we're like ribbing somebody on the mic, and that's like ribbon.
- 5:43Speaker 4: But it was really good. I thought it was such
- 5:46Speaker 4: a good.
- 5:47Speaker 7: Uh cadence and balance at the same time where the
- 5:51Speaker 7: younger guys could come and feel comfortable.
- 5:54Speaker 4: That's so important, so important because you're so insecure when
- 5:56Speaker 4: you get up there.
- 5:57Speaker 7: Like you said, it really well, and I think think
- 6:00Speaker 7: all of our guys that were older made people feel
- 6:02Speaker 7: comfortable and the young guys balled out.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Well, I don't know how to secure you were You're
- 6:05Speaker 2: in the rek of the year.
- 6:06Speaker 4: So well I was in the beginning. Sure, I sucked
- 6:09Speaker 4: in the.
- 6:10Speaker 3: First We should have been an asshole to you.
- 6:13Speaker 4: There plenty of that from you, an so you were good.
- 6:16Speaker 1: So Ceci, you were here in fourteen when we got
- 6:18Speaker 1: into that scuffle with the Reds. We were talking about it,
- 6:20Speaker 1: just like how that through your vantage point?
- 6:24Speaker 2: What was that all about?
- 6:27Speaker 7: Well, listen, we sucked, okay, and I've been on some
- 6:31Speaker 7: sucky teams and I was like, I'm so tired of sucking.
- 6:35Speaker 7: And it was tough. You know, there's an evolution for me.
- 6:38Speaker 7: I wasn't a dude. It's my first year over here,
- 6:41Speaker 7: you know. But then once I was playing every day,
- 6:45Speaker 7: you know, my personality injected in and we just lacked leadership.
- 6:50Speaker 7: You know, you were there, but you were young, you
- 6:52Speaker 7: were still developing. You were the dude on our team.
- 6:55Speaker 7: We had a couple other guys, but we didn't have
- 6:57Speaker 7: that like veteran no forrid. And what I know about
- 7:01Speaker 7: sucky teams is they lack leadership. They don't have a
- 7:05Speaker 7: tone setter personality to be able to say this is bs.
- 7:09Speaker 7: We'll not putting up with this. Y'all need to toe
- 7:11Speaker 7: the line and stop acting like cupcakes and so man.
- 7:16Speaker 4: When we were getting drummed, I hated.
- 7:17Speaker 7: I hated the Cardinals, and I hated they would just
- 7:20Speaker 7: come up and want to hang out and come give
- 7:21Speaker 7: you a hug and whatever, and then kick your teethail that.
- 7:24Speaker 7: I'm like, I'm so tired. I don't even want to
- 7:26Speaker 7: see those guys. I don't eve want to see them
- 7:28Speaker 7: in our locker room. I don't even want to go
- 7:29Speaker 7: shake their hand. And then it was finally with the
- 7:32Speaker 7: Reds when he threw at sure.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Well it was over his head twice.
- 7:37Speaker 7: Yeah, and I still remember we were so pissed and then.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Like I just lost it and you're lost on a level.
- 7:45Speaker 7: But and then when I got out to left field
- 7:47Speaker 7: and we were like gloves were off, I was. I
- 7:50Speaker 7: still get jacked up telling the story. It was a
- 7:52Speaker 7: moment for me that it was like a tone setter
- 7:56Speaker 7: that I'll never forget because it was like, we're not
- 7:59Speaker 7: going to keep sucking. I felt that after that, we're
- 8:02Speaker 7: not going to get punked around anymore. And then fifteen
- 8:04Speaker 7: we go get some dudes, and then then the story
- 8:07Speaker 7: and the narrative starts changing, and that's just a big
- 8:10Speaker 7: moment for me, you know, from fourteen to fifteen, and
- 8:13Speaker 7: then obviously fifteen sixteen.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Was there a time in fifteen that you guys remember
- 8:18Speaker 3: It's like, oh, we're good. And I know you didn't
- 8:22Speaker 3: get up till sixteen, but like fifteen you remember that, Yeah,
- 8:27Speaker 3: which when we started.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Rolling, I did.
- 8:29Speaker 7: I just maybe because I hated the Cardinals so much
- 8:33Speaker 7: that it was like and it was a respect for
- 8:35Speaker 7: him you know, it was like they were big, they
- 8:37Speaker 7: were a big boy in and they were they earned
- 8:39Speaker 7: it right, Like I mean, you mad respect. I mean,
- 8:42Speaker 7: I'm friends with dudes on that team. I mean I
- 8:43Speaker 7: didn't want to see them because I was like, I
- 8:46Speaker 7: remember when you said, hey, bro Se, see we wear blue,
- 8:48Speaker 7: we don't wear red route here.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Do you remember that?
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yeah? Oh yeah?
- 8:51Speaker 4: And I was like, all right, we're moving the train.
- 8:54Speaker 4: We're moving.
- 8:55Speaker 7: People are starting to notice little things about winning that
- 8:58Speaker 7: nobody ever noticed. Fourteen and I think when we beat
- 9:02Speaker 7: the Cardinals a couple of times, it was no biggie
- 9:04Speaker 7: to them because it was a regular season, but in
- 9:07Speaker 7: my mind, they can't beat us and I and then
- 9:10Speaker 7: we play them in the division.
- 9:11Speaker 3: It was like, I can't wait to play the Remember
- 9:12Speaker 3: I remember Joe Sam taking you got to take the
- 9:14Speaker 3: ball back, you know what I mean, You go on
- 9:16Speaker 3: the playground, get go, get the ball back when you
- 9:18Speaker 3: want to play. He was reverencing Saint Louis. And to
- 9:21Speaker 3: your point, Riz told a story about you know, the
- 9:24Speaker 3: Cardinals coaches and guys coming into the weight room, Huggy
- 9:27Speaker 3: and all friends, and then we started kicking their butt
- 9:29Speaker 3: second half fifteen and all of a sudden, they're not
- 9:32Speaker 3: showing up.
- 9:32Speaker 4: That's right.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Nobody says hello, yeah, okay, yeah, it is so good attention.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yeah, it sees you were I mean yeah, I mean, dude,
- 9:42Speaker 1: when I think of clubs Cardinals, I just I think
- 9:45Speaker 1: about you screaming the locker.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Room like clubs.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, I mean dude. Fifteen it was was
- 9:52Speaker 1: it death like from being there, from from like the
- 9:56Speaker 1: Jim Hendry's perspective, Yeah, to get because Jim had you
- 9:59Speaker 1: draft you right correct.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:01Speaker 1: So it was like a complete, you know, three sixty change,
- 10:05Speaker 1: and the culture just changed, and I think it really
- 10:07Speaker 1: started with you, and then for fifteen. I remember, like,
- 10:11Speaker 1: you know, Areata just fucking dominated Dominator and and it
- 10:16Speaker 1: was like we're winning every game. Yeah, and it just
- 10:19Speaker 1: every game, like you know, he's gonna go and he's
- 10:21Speaker 1: going nine innings and he's throwing a two hitter and
- 10:24Speaker 1: we're it didn't matter. And I feel like just people
- 10:27Speaker 1: started to like buy into we're winning every game. And
- 10:30Speaker 1: like I remember ROSSI we be coming in because my
- 10:32Speaker 1: locker was right there. If we lost, it was like
- 10:35Speaker 1: fuck it, we're gonna win tomorrow. And there was never
- 10:37Speaker 1: a point in my career fourteen, fifteen and sixteen, when
- 10:41Speaker 1: I when I thought we're gonna lose a game, I.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Thought that was the important the good teams out be
- 10:46Speaker 3: in on and we had that in Chicago, and I
- 10:49Speaker 3: took that into managing. Was like, we slept fine because
- 10:53Speaker 3: we didn't mean ourselves right. We may had it, we
- 10:55Speaker 3: make out, we didn't get the big hit, or we
- 10:57Speaker 3: may got out pitched one one day, but it was like, oh,
- 10:59Speaker 3: we'll be back tomorrow because we've got Lester the areata. Yeah, Pammel,
- 11:04Speaker 3: you know the boys are coming back. And I thought
- 11:07Speaker 3: that was such a good thing that I learned later
- 11:09Speaker 3: in my career too. It's like, yeah, and Joe we
- 11:11Speaker 3: were talking yesterday about his twenty minutes. You know, lose hard,
- 11:14Speaker 3: win win hard, and then move on, right, And the
- 11:17Speaker 3: good teams I've been on, it's just like, yeah, we did.
- 11:20Speaker 3: As long as we don't beat ourselves, we'll be back
- 11:22Speaker 3: the next day doing it doing the same well.
- 11:23Speaker 1: And I think it starts from the top. You as
- 11:25Speaker 1: a leader, you know, Lesser Lackey, you you guys. Not
- 11:29Speaker 1: beating the team up because we fucking lost. Yeah, helps
- 11:32Speaker 1: everybody be like, so what we'll get on tomorrow, you know,
- 11:35Speaker 1: and that's that's why you win.
- 11:37Speaker 3: You forget as a veteran, how much impact, Like looking
- 11:40Speaker 3: back when all you guys tell these stories, bro that
- 11:42Speaker 3: I used to say that when I address the team
- 11:44Speaker 3: every spring trains. Like the one thing I remember from
- 11:47Speaker 3: retiring was we would go and I would see guys
- 11:51Speaker 3: around and they would never talk about the big hit
- 11:53Speaker 3: or the big pitch. Right, we'll talk about those today.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Were talking about how yeah, yeah, how is he good?
- 11:59Speaker 3: This he affected my career this way. He bought me
- 12:02Speaker 3: a suit, he took me to dinner, He told me
- 12:04Speaker 3: how to be a big leaguer. Like, that's the stories
- 12:06Speaker 3: people tell. And I would tell my team like, that's
- 12:08Speaker 3: what your responsibility is really going to be as veterans,
- 12:11Speaker 3: because everybody's watching and you can impact somebody and let
- 12:14Speaker 3: them ember all the career.
- 12:15Speaker 1: When I got when I got traded to New York.
- 12:18Speaker 1: You know here, I'm I was here for so long
- 12:20Speaker 1: and I was and if there was a problem with
- 12:23Speaker 1: anything on or off the field, I was the one
- 12:25Speaker 1: who went to either the front office or VJ whoever
- 12:28Speaker 1: had to be the bad guy, right, So I get
- 12:30Speaker 1: traded over to New York and my first day, we're
- 12:33Speaker 1: stretching on the line of Brett Gardner is just ripping
- 12:37Speaker 1: someone on the Yankee staff for like the music wasn't
- 12:40Speaker 1: loud enough of BP or something, and I just sat back.
- 12:43Speaker 1: He was like my first home game in the York
- 12:45Speaker 1: and I was so relieved in him to.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Just launching that. What are you talking?
- 12:49Speaker 1: I loved it, but I loved seeing someone else do it,
- 12:54Speaker 1: and I was I loved being back behind the scenes
- 12:57Speaker 1: in that role and just seeing it. It was so relieving me,
- 13:00Speaker 1: like seeing a veteran like that take control.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Of other people. Well, the accountability was what we had
- 13:06Speaker 3: in that team.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Right, Well yeah, and it starts, it starts from the top,
- 13:09Speaker 1: goes down to the bottom.
- 13:09Speaker 2: For sure.
- 13:10Speaker 7: It started with jo Want to tell you this one
- 13:11Speaker 7: story you're talking about fifteen You just made me think
- 13:13Speaker 7: about darn Cardinals again. But my one of my favorite
- 13:16Speaker 7: stories with you. There's several of them. But you remember,
- 13:20Speaker 7: you know what I'm talking about When we had to
- 13:22Speaker 7: go to that event what who.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Oh, yeah it was it was a Jason Motts event.
- 13:27Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yeh, list it's great. He's a great story.
- 13:31Speaker 7: So you know, the Bears just you know, he's in
- 13:34Speaker 7: there and they put that like pad on you.
- 13:36Speaker 4: You know that because like and lay.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Well, John Lackey fucking drilled me the night before, on purpose,
- 13:43Speaker 1: on purpose, and we retaliated, right. I think Joe said
- 13:46Speaker 1: we were gonna help twice something great. It's great because
- 13:49Speaker 1: he wish Lacky was here right now in the room. Well,
- 13:52Speaker 1: the thing is, I don't have a single hit off
- 13:55Speaker 1: John Lackey. He dominates me. But at the time we
- 13:59Speaker 1: were still figuring out that I couldn't hit him, and
- 14:01Speaker 1: his pitch coin was high, and he.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Freaking drilled me right into the sweet spot and I
- 14:06Speaker 2: was hurting.
- 14:07Speaker 7: So when you get drilled right there, you can't like
- 14:09Speaker 7: extend your arm allway because there's too much swallowing.
- 14:11Speaker 4: So he's got his pink pad on, you.
- 14:12Speaker 7: Know, and and uh we're like, I'm like, rin is
- 14:16Speaker 7: he goes, bro, he's taking it off. He can't swell you,
- 14:18Speaker 7: And I'm like, bro, what are you doing? We got
- 14:20Speaker 7: to play tomorrow.
- 14:21Speaker 4: It's like, I can't let Lacky know that he did
- 14:23Speaker 4: he drilled. Screw that guy. I knew I loved the bear.
- 14:30Speaker 7: This guy's ripping the pink pad off just for an event.
- 14:34Speaker 7: So he doesn't show any weakness where we were in
- 14:36Speaker 7: the like TAXI show no weakness.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Think Jason Mott did a cornhole event, I believe, and
- 14:42Speaker 1: that was still earlier in fifteen where they were still
- 14:45Speaker 1: kicking our ass.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't he want to go.
- 14:47Speaker 3: We didn't want to go.
- 14:47Speaker 4: We're like, where are we going?
- 14:48Speaker 3: And it was mid Jason Mott came from there.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Yeah, it was really you know, he was kind of
- 14:52Speaker 4: the bridge. But it was like, why are we doing this?
- 14:54Speaker 7: And we're doing it for a good cause, but we
- 14:56Speaker 7: were like, we gotta do this with the Cardinals.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Let's fast forward to sixteen. I want to think about
- 15:02Speaker 3: that team and the first thing that comes in the memories,
- 15:04Speaker 3: the stories you tell your friends about that sixteen team,
- 15:08Speaker 3: what are they start with?
- 15:09Speaker 4: You olt just a family. It's just being so close knit.
- 15:12Speaker 5: You guys playing freaking Mario Kart like and during the
- 15:15Speaker 5: World Series. I always tell the sort of you guys
- 15:17Speaker 5: big lead the was it Vince Vaughan or Vince Remember
- 15:21Speaker 5: when he showed us to the He showed up to
- 15:23Speaker 5: the club, he say what's up, guys, and everybody's just
- 15:25Speaker 5: locked in. I was a young guys just looking I'm
- 15:27Speaker 5: like holy shit. And then Riz got up after the
- 15:29Speaker 5: gates like they us they had a Vince and so
- 15:32Speaker 5: it was things like that, just how close knit we were,
- 15:35Speaker 5: and uh, I would really cared for one another, care
- 15:37Speaker 5: for each other's families like that was huge, man, Like
- 15:40Speaker 5: being a.
- 15:41Speaker 6: First year guy, just gotten married, having a kid, and then.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Your dad was going through some stuff.
- 15:45Speaker 5: Yeah, got cancer at that time, and yeah, just seeing
- 15:49Speaker 5: how much everybody cared and was really in it for
- 15:52Speaker 5: the right reasons. And there was you know, being on
- 15:54Speaker 5: different other organizations and seeing how guys go about their
- 15:57Speaker 5: business where they they're pros, right, they just go into it,
- 16:00Speaker 5: but they work and they go home. The cubs there
- 16:03Speaker 5: were guys were staying after the games. We were even
- 16:06Speaker 5: with losses, We'll have a little light music playing, like
- 16:09Speaker 5: knowing that the next day we're gonna come on and
- 16:11Speaker 5: beat everybody's ass. Like it was things like that that
- 16:13Speaker 5: really sat with me and and I wish I would
- 16:15Speaker 5: have got to really experience winning a year or two
- 16:18Speaker 5: after lou feeling losing, what it is like to lose,
- 16:21Speaker 5: getting into it and winning our first year. So I
- 16:24Speaker 5: was like, we're gonna winever, We're gonna come in seventeen.
- 16:26Speaker 5: We're gonna beat the shit on everybody, and then we lose,
- 16:29Speaker 5: and we see how that feels, and like, how how
- 16:32Speaker 5: you know we're not gonna see each other?
- 16:33Speaker 4: A lot of guys are going.
- 16:34Speaker 5: Different paths, Like so I wish I would have got
- 16:36Speaker 5: to experience that a little later in my career. But nonetheless,
- 16:39Speaker 5: like what a great experience, what a great deal about you?
- 16:43Speaker 2: I mean, the same thing, man.
- 16:44Speaker 1: That's I literally tell everybody all the time that we
- 16:46Speaker 1: were family. Like we didn't just show up to the ballpark.
- 16:49Speaker 1: We did stuff outside the ballpark, like with the families too.
- 16:52Speaker 1: It wasn't just like you know, the boys going out.
- 16:55Speaker 1: It was hey, bring your family, bring your kids, you know.
- 16:58Speaker 1: And I just think that's that's what separate It's the
- 17:00Speaker 1: good teams from the bad teams. Is like, yet, it
- 17:03Speaker 1: is your job, it's work, but I mean you can
- 17:05Speaker 1: you can be a family outside of it too.
- 17:07Speaker 3: It's like Cogs you got, you got kind of the chef.
- 17:11Speaker 3: We're all excited, the Dexas bag and Cogs out of
- 17:14Speaker 3: the door, right like I mean to start and then
- 17:17Speaker 3: you come back to somewhere you had been for.
- 17:20Speaker 7: A while and get to get on the run was,
- 17:24Speaker 7: Like I said, there were so many emotions for that.
- 17:26Speaker 7: I don't know if you guys probably remember, So, yeah,
- 17:29Speaker 7: there was such a unique time because I had just
- 17:32Speaker 7: gone with THEO on like all walk to like and
- 17:36Speaker 7: he's like trying to feel me out, and I'm thinking,
- 17:38Speaker 7: what I've.
- 17:39Speaker 3: Never what are we going on a walk?
- 17:40Speaker 7: I'm like stretching at six in the morning, and he's like, hey,
- 17:42Speaker 7: can I talk to you? He's like, we'll get it
- 17:44Speaker 7: after you work out, and I'm like.
- 17:46Speaker 4: No, I'm pretty sure. Let's just go. Let's go right,
- 17:49Speaker 4: I've been around the loss, Like, what are you doing there?
- 17:51Speaker 4: Leave me with that dude six in the morning. I'm
- 17:55Speaker 4: not starting by morning. This is in sixteen.
- 17:57Speaker 7: This is spring training, Like we're about to start spring training.
- 18:00Speaker 7: The first day we get decks, so he pulls me.
- 18:03Speaker 7: This is two days.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Before I was early at camp.
- 18:05Speaker 7: I kind of wanted to always be ready, and so
- 18:08Speaker 7: we go for this walk and we have the talk.
- 18:09Speaker 4: I won't go through all the details of that.
- 18:11Speaker 7: One, you know, but I'm like, yeah, man, I'm whatever
- 18:14Speaker 7: I got to do, you know. And I hadn't really
- 18:16Speaker 7: given my heart to another organization because I got cut
- 18:20Speaker 7: in Miami, my art when I gave so much when
- 18:23Speaker 7: I had all those surgeries, and so I swore I
- 18:26Speaker 7: was never going to do that again.
- 18:27Speaker 4: I was always just going to look out for my
- 18:29Speaker 4: career and play for the boys and my family.
- 18:32Speaker 7: And I was like, yeah, I'm cool if I need
- 18:34Speaker 7: to be the fourth outfielder. Well, sure enough, the next
- 18:37Speaker 7: day they pulled me off stretch, you know. And I'll
- 18:41Speaker 7: remember this, y'all were all and I was excited.
- 18:43Speaker 4: For Dex too.
- 18:44Speaker 7: But so I had texted Decks two days before or
- 18:48Speaker 7: one day before. I'm like, hey, man, hang in there,
- 18:50Speaker 7: because he had gotten the arbitration.
- 18:52Speaker 4: And sure enough we get Decks, right. Dex is kind
- 18:54Speaker 4: of like being a little bit like vague with me.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Yeah, same that time.
- 18:58Speaker 7: Bro, And I'm like, what's the d So they pulled
- 19:01Speaker 7: me off stretch and they call me in.
- 19:03Speaker 4: I'm like, what the heck? I get traded.
- 19:05Speaker 7: I'm I'm like, really, I don't want to say devastated,
- 19:08Speaker 7: but I'm like really hurt and bummed because I'm like,
- 19:11Speaker 7: I'm never gonna win a world series. That's that was
- 19:13Speaker 7: what I said my first direction. I'm like, what are
- 19:16Speaker 7: you kidding me? I just told you I would play.
- 19:17Speaker 7: I would go to the fourth outfield like, well, you'll
- 19:19Speaker 7: find out. So when he when when they pulled me in,
- 19:24Speaker 7: I was just like, oh my gosh. And then we
- 19:26Speaker 7: walk out of the meeting. I'm like, oh, wait, who
- 19:29Speaker 7: did you trade me?
- 19:30Speaker 2: Athletics.
- 19:31Speaker 4: I'm like, I'm everyone's gonna hate me the cards in
- 19:34Speaker 4: the athletics. I'm like, the athletics, are you kidding me?
- 19:37Speaker 3: They suck.
- 19:38Speaker 4: He's like, we think you'll get more playing time. See
- 19:41Speaker 4: you later, you know.
- 19:42Speaker 7: And I walk out and here comes Dex. And I
- 19:45Speaker 7: hadn't put it together. I'd just gotten fired, right, and
- 19:49Speaker 7: and I'm.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Like, Dex, what's up? What are you doing here?
- 19:52Speaker 7: And he looks at me and I'm like, oh, that's
- 19:55Speaker 7: the news RS to find out.
- 19:58Speaker 4: And I'm like, I'm like, he's like kind of not.
- 20:00Speaker 7: He can't look me in the eye right because he
- 20:02Speaker 7: already knew what was happening. I'm like, hey, man, you
- 20:04Speaker 7: didn't do anything. It's all good. I'm happy for you
- 20:07Speaker 7: and your family. I get to my locker. They had
- 20:10Speaker 7: already cleaned up.
- 20:10Speaker 4: My whole locker. Decks is already in my locker.
- 20:12Speaker 7: I look at I look at Danny I'm like, Danny,
- 20:16Speaker 7: who's in my locker?
- 20:17Speaker 4: He goes, oh, Dex. I'm like, Danny, I haven't even
- 20:19Speaker 4: gotten fired. Two minutes. I got nothing in a while.
- 20:22Speaker 4: He goes, well, your boxes are over there. I'm like,
- 20:24Speaker 4: my box, can I get dressed? I'm still in this thing.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Wow, I talk about ten years later.
- 20:30Speaker 7: It is and I walk back out and now I
- 20:33Speaker 7: walk out of the locker and here comes Dex and
- 20:35Speaker 7: THEO walking together.
- 20:36Speaker 4: I'm like, the guy just fired me.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Everyone's all.
- 20:41Speaker 3: I was like.
- 20:42Speaker 4: The news is everywhere, so im I shower. I'm by myself, shower.
- 20:45Speaker 7: And I get out and it's all in the news.
- 20:48Speaker 7: Everyone's excited, and I'm happy for every one of you
- 20:51Speaker 7: guys and the whole team.
- 20:53Speaker 4: And I'm like, wow, this is so sobering, Like I
- 20:56Speaker 4: was there and now I'm not.
- 20:58Speaker 7: Now I'm getting a taxi with my boxes, and I
- 21:00Speaker 7: got to call my wife, who just got fired, and
- 21:02Speaker 7: we're moving Oakland.
- 21:04Speaker 2: We just went from first place way baseball. Well, that's
- 21:09Speaker 2: a good it's tough.
- 21:10Speaker 1: That's a good kind of tail baseball in general, because
- 21:15Speaker 1: someone's getting called up, someone's losing their job all times,
- 21:19Speaker 1: and as a professional, you have to balance that because
- 21:21Speaker 1: as excited as we were for decks, we're also losing
- 21:25Speaker 1: a brother that his whole family's about to get rocked, right,
- 21:28Speaker 1: Like that's what people.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Don't understand getting traded.
- 21:31Speaker 1: You get rocked quick, you know, getting sent down, Like
- 21:34Speaker 1: you're part of the team, especially the pitchers. Right, you've
- 21:37Speaker 1: guys been up and down a few times, right, you
- 21:40Speaker 1: weren't eyes up and down as.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Much I went.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I went down twice.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Yeah, fifteen, I was up and down nine times. So
- 21:47Speaker 1: it's like, yeah, they did somebody. You can't even do
- 21:49Speaker 1: that anymore because of it's wow. Yeah, so it's like
- 21:52Speaker 1: every every two three weeks, I was up and down.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:55Speaker 1: So like you're excited for someone to get called up
- 21:57Speaker 1: and then you see someone getting sent out. So it's
- 21:59Speaker 1: like these emotions are crazy. But speaking of that, you
- 22:03Speaker 1: guys were with us for the most part. You got
- 22:06Speaker 1: called up, but you were with us all year in sixteen, right, yeah,
- 22:08Speaker 1: I think you got sent down once. And speaking of
- 22:12Speaker 1: roles and being happy for guys at the deadline or
- 22:16Speaker 1: during July, we get you back, CCEE and you guys,
- 22:20Speaker 1: that's going to cut from your playing time, right, We're
- 22:22Speaker 1: getting another outfielder. It's like, how do you handle that?
- 22:25Speaker 1: Because you weren't already playing every day. You were getting
- 22:28Speaker 1: decent at bats, but you weren't every day guys. And
- 22:31Speaker 1: then we bring in another guy, You're like, what the fuck, Like,
- 22:35Speaker 1: how do you handle that? Because it's not easy, right,
- 22:38Speaker 1: it can't be easy. Yeah, personally, well, I mean it's not,
- 22:41Speaker 1: of course, you know. It's like, yeah, so it's like,
- 22:44Speaker 1: you know, you got to control what you can control.
- 22:46Speaker 1: And I think one of the things that I always
- 22:47Speaker 1: kind of hung my hat on was just working hard
- 22:50Speaker 1: and trying to do things right.
- 22:53Speaker 2: I stayed in my lane.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I didn't really you know, fuck around or do anything
- 22:57Speaker 1: out of the ordinary, like got my workouts in, got
- 22:59Speaker 1: my train in, took BP, shagged hard.
- 23:03Speaker 4: You know.
- 23:03Speaker 1: When I played, got the opportunity, I just tried to
- 23:06Speaker 1: ball out.
- 23:06Speaker 2: So control what you can control. You're fucking the man
- 23:09Speaker 2: on the ski.
- 23:12Speaker 1: It's just, you know, you got to be positive because
- 23:14Speaker 1: you want to be you want to you still want
- 23:15Speaker 1: to win, and you don't want to be a cancer
- 23:17Speaker 1: in the organization because one, Noy'll Bey likes you, and yeah, two.
- 23:21Speaker 2: You just don't want to bring the team down.
- 23:22Speaker 3: I think That's one of the hardest things to do though,
- 23:24Speaker 3: as a young guy, especially when you have expectations or
- 23:28Speaker 3: high round guys. You want to come in and you
- 23:29Speaker 3: really want to play, and also it's not it may
- 23:31Speaker 3: not be your time yet, you know, and being patient
- 23:34Speaker 3: in that and continue to work hard and not well.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Yeah, the competitive edge.
- 23:38Speaker 1: I mean, I still always think that I'm because I
- 23:41Speaker 1: put in the work that you always think that you're
- 23:43Speaker 1: better than people because you're like, man, I should be playing.
- 23:46Speaker 2: I'm the bad teams.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and the bad teams you have the guys that
- 23:50Speaker 1: are bitter.
- 23:51Speaker 2: That's every day exactly as.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Anymore, right, And I played with a lot of guys
- 23:55Speaker 1: like that, and there's no disrespect to them. But then
- 23:57Speaker 1: when you get on the good teams, you know, you
- 23:59Speaker 1: weren't young like making young service time, but you bring
- 24:02Speaker 1: the big leads at fourteen up and down fourteen, fifteen sixteen,
- 24:06Speaker 1: So now you were younger, Yeah, did you know any better?
- 24:09Speaker 2: Like what was your emotion?
- 24:11Speaker 5: I was so you know, oblivious to it all. I
- 24:14Speaker 5: was just happy to be and try to help whenever
- 24:16Speaker 5: I get the chance, Like I.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Knew that your stage one with Joe, Yeah, but.
- 24:22Speaker 6: But it really I knew that sixteen there was something
- 24:26Speaker 6: specially gohing.
- 24:26Speaker 5: I remember I got called up when I think when
- 24:28Speaker 5: solaire So I heard his hamstring in June, and I
- 24:33Speaker 5: knew I was going to be there for a time
- 24:35Speaker 5: or living a time, and I just wanted to, you know,
- 24:37Speaker 5: take the most of it and do my best and
- 24:39Speaker 5: be prepared. But I knew what was going on. We
- 24:43Speaker 5: were like twenty games up in the in the division
- 24:45Speaker 5: at that time. I just wanted to help and not
- 24:47Speaker 5: you know, mess anything up. But I knew that I
- 24:51Speaker 5: was going to be a role player that year. I
- 24:54Speaker 5: wasn't even though as an athlete, like you know, see says,
- 24:57Speaker 5: we know we could play, We know he could be
- 24:59Speaker 5: in there every day. But I was just taking it
- 25:01Speaker 5: all in and just helping as much as I could.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Yeah, what give us some of your guys's favorite things
- 25:09Speaker 1: that popped your mind when you talk about like plane rides,
- 25:14Speaker 1: bus rides, behind the scenes.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Do you remember when we were driving and the girl
- 25:18Speaker 2: had a cast on?
- 25:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I tell that story. Nobody knows that I was.
- 25:26Speaker 3: From dinner.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Oh my gosh.
- 25:29Speaker 3: I jammed into a many a taxi minivan and it
- 25:32Speaker 3: was like eight of us in there big.
- 25:33Speaker 1: I mean we were in Colorado. I think we went
- 25:35Speaker 1: to Elways. I think, yeah, that's right, that's right, that's right.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I guess I'll tell this story. So this we were like, yeah,
- 25:41Speaker 1: in a car and there was a girl next to us.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I don't know if she had a cast on, and
- 25:45Speaker 1: her hand was like this, and Russy gives her like.
- 25:51Speaker 3: You were next. I rolled down the cab window and
- 25:54Speaker 3: she had a cat you know, she had a whole
- 25:55Speaker 3: wrist cast so it's like you know how it goes
- 25:57Speaker 3: over here, and she had it on the edge and
- 25:59Speaker 3: was holding the steerwheel like this. So I rolled down
- 26:02Speaker 3: the window and I get her attention and she like
- 26:04Speaker 3: looks and I'm like.
- 26:07Speaker 7: Due.
- 26:07Speaker 3: It was like we made him funny.
- 26:09Speaker 2: It was the most random thing ever.
- 26:11Speaker 1: I believe you remember so good. I mean, dude, it's
- 26:15Speaker 1: just puts into perspective. Everybody's just normal people, right like
- 26:19Speaker 1: you know, and people don't look at it like that.
- 26:21Speaker 3: But that's a good one.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:25Speaker 1: I think there was one war was I always tell
- 26:27Speaker 1: the story about the gump when Yeah, so you know,
- 26:33Speaker 1: we were slaping everybody's high five high five after after
- 26:37Speaker 1: when yeah, and you know, I was a bench player,
- 26:40Speaker 1: so I'm always at the end.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Rossie wasn't catching.
- 26:42Speaker 3: That day and we stand next to each other a lot.
- 26:44Speaker 1: On the bench and he's like, hey, watch this. He
- 26:49Speaker 1: spits has gone out.
- 26:50Speaker 3: He throws it.
- 26:51Speaker 1: He throws it to the fan fans like.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Like, dude, He's like, they love me here, they love
- 26:57Speaker 2: me here. It was incredible. It was incredible that.
- 27:05Speaker 7: Where you're like right next catch it in their mouth
- 27:09Speaker 7: or like.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Feed the animals. There's so many things that go on
- 27:15Speaker 1: behind the scenes. My god, just no one knows, even
- 27:19Speaker 1: the camera memory.
- 27:21Speaker 3: That's great.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Real gum took it out of his mouth and lost it.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I don't know if the guy threw it in his
- 27:26Speaker 1: mouth or not, but he caught it and he was
- 27:29Speaker 1: like it was yeah. I'm like, this is this is
- 27:30Speaker 1: the greatest thing I've ever seen.
- 27:32Speaker 2: He's He's got a piece of gum out of David
- 27:34Speaker 2: Ross's mouth. He's like he's posting about it.
- 27:38Speaker 6: I like the plane, love the playing rides, especially as
- 27:40Speaker 6: a young guy.
- 27:41Speaker 5: We had the beer, carrying the beer, and then the
- 27:43Speaker 5: back of the plane was you less Lack and all
- 27:46Speaker 5: those guys, and I, you know, I was sitting on
- 27:48Speaker 5: the front. I would sitting behind you. It was KB
- 27:50Speaker 5: you and then me and then uh I whenever I
- 27:53Speaker 5: hear lesser you know, our beer, and I would just
- 27:55Speaker 5: want to go back there and just want to be
- 27:56Speaker 5: in the back of the guys. And there's a lot
- 27:58Speaker 5: of experience back there, you know what, even as a
- 28:00Speaker 5: young guy, wanted to see how how they acted, How
- 28:03Speaker 5: was the show? How how is it being in the show,
- 28:04Speaker 5: And uh yeah, those those are the memories that you
- 28:07Speaker 5: take with and just the plane rides of bus rides,
- 28:10Speaker 5: the picking on, like you know, the mic stuff, the.
- 28:12Speaker 3: Mic stuff fun, yeah, good good good mic guys like
- 28:15Speaker 3: always always key, always key freaking.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Was like John.
- 28:23Speaker 3: In Boston. Yeah, our teams would get on there and
- 28:25Speaker 3: it's Latin act like fellows fellows.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Bus rides whenever we're traveling and.
- 28:31Speaker 3: When we land in the city.
- 28:32Speaker 1: We land in the city, sometimes on the way, but
- 28:36Speaker 1: there's always a mic guy on the bus. So John
- 28:38Speaker 1: Lester was our guy and and John had to get
- 28:40Speaker 1: some liquid courage to really get going. He was going.
- 28:44Speaker 1: It was it was must watch entertainment. There was a
- 28:47Speaker 1: light show and we had Miguel Montero and like doing
- 28:50Speaker 1: running his car the whole the whole cast of Carrot.
- 28:54Speaker 1: No one was safe, nobody and uh but John on
- 28:58Speaker 1: the mic wasn't.
- 29:00Speaker 4: Talking about that.
- 29:00Speaker 3: How like you as your career progresses, it's nice to
- 29:04Speaker 3: be a veteran when you start to get creep back
- 29:06Speaker 3: on a team and get the back of the plane
- 29:07Speaker 3: like that is. It's a real status thing, right that
- 29:09Speaker 3: nobody ever talks about. But you get to pick your
- 29:11Speaker 3: own seat unless I mean you said it front. I
- 29:13Speaker 3: was in the Huh you couldn't go little deep, little.
- 29:19Speaker 4: There's a couple of reminders.
- 29:20Speaker 7: You threw some breadcrumbs, Little deep, little Joe would come back.
- 29:23Speaker 3: I'm like, little deep mad, you're a little deep.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Let's get Let's get to the World Series. Yes, I
- 29:31Speaker 1: mean we rolled through the playoffs. We have this amazing team.
- 29:37Speaker 1: We get to the World Series. Really three different scenarios here,
- 29:43Speaker 1: all in one. You got left off the roster and
- 29:46Speaker 1: you were chapped, and I remember and I was chapped
- 29:49Speaker 1: for you because you were such a big part of
- 29:51Speaker 1: our of our culture, of our team, right, and you're
- 29:54Speaker 1: on the bench the entire time fucking being like the
- 29:56Speaker 1: best person there is.
- 29:58Speaker 2: That's why everyone loves you.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Didn't change a bit.
- 30:00Speaker 2: That's that's that's that's you know what am I gonna do?
- 30:04Speaker 2: Right exactly? Am I going to be a fucking asshole?
- 30:06Speaker 3: No?
- 30:07Speaker 2: No, I want my team to win exactly.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Like even though I wasn't on the roster, you know,
- 30:13Speaker 1: I still you were every bit on that roster.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Yeah, Like I want to say.
- 30:16Speaker 4: Something real quick, because you really were.
- 30:18Speaker 7: Like I'm gonna get sentimental, but it is really cool
- 30:21Speaker 7: to see. Uh, it's so rare, you know, like for
- 30:26Speaker 7: yours because you like change your swing that year you
- 30:29Speaker 7: were hitting some pumps. You were a different dude offensively,
- 30:33Speaker 7: and to see you do that and then it is
- 30:35Speaker 7: so hard. I can't imagine. I wasn't in that shoe,
- 30:40Speaker 7: but I mine was different. But like you were a
- 30:43Speaker 7: pro pro dude and that you deserve mad respect for that.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the.
- 30:48Speaker 7: Genuineness that it shows your heart and your character.
- 30:50Speaker 1: That's that South Jersey and the well you know real
- 30:53Speaker 1: like here's here's like a stat I'm not a stat guy,
- 30:55Speaker 1: but I you know, led the league and.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Bets.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Yes at the All Star break, bro, you were like
- 31:02Speaker 1: our best and like you and Mastella, so I don't know, yeah.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Yeah, control right, Like am I bitter?
- 31:12Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 31:12Speaker 2: Obviously want to play, but you know, I wanted to play.
- 31:15Speaker 3: But I think too, what's cool about this room, in
- 31:17Speaker 3: this group is like everybody recognize that, and the fact
- 31:20Speaker 3: that that if I look back and people ask about you,
- 31:23Speaker 3: this is you right here. Every day you're just saying
- 31:25Speaker 3: right now, I follow you on Instagram. Every morning you're grinding,
- 31:30Speaker 3: and yeah.
- 31:32Speaker 1: I just I think it's it's really you know, like
- 31:35Speaker 1: I just want to be consistent and I don't want
- 31:40Speaker 1: my career, my life to go down, right, Like my
- 31:42Speaker 1: first thirty three years of my life was a fucking
- 31:45Speaker 1: really special time. So you know, as I'm growing older, fans,
- 31:49Speaker 1: your kids, friends, like I want them to see like wow,
- 31:55Speaker 1: that that dude is fucking still doing it right. And
- 31:58Speaker 1: I want to do that because I I don't want
- 32:00Speaker 1: the kid down the street that wants my autograph when
- 32:02Speaker 1: I'm forty five years old and we're doing the twenty
- 32:04Speaker 1: year anniversary and I look like a fat slob, like, Wow,
- 32:07Speaker 1: that dude was a really good athlete. You know, I
- 32:09Speaker 1: want to be able to like show and lead by example,
- 32:13Speaker 1: right like what I tried to do on the field,
- 32:15Speaker 1: Like I want to do that forever.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Yeah you well you always have you always.
- 32:19Speaker 3: I was working out a little extra hard just for
- 32:21Speaker 3: this reunion because I'm like, I don't I don't want
- 32:24Speaker 3: the boy to be like.
- 32:28Speaker 1: You, Like you're you're you're at the peak performance, you're
- 32:33Speaker 1: the highest level.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Why like not be be at that or close? Sure
- 32:38Speaker 2: you know you can?
- 32:39Speaker 1: Oh you you're on the roster, right, And then CC
- 32:45Speaker 1: started game one, started Game one, which is again in baseball,
- 32:49Speaker 1: you're fucking pump bro.
- 32:50Speaker 2: You're starting game one of the world's Chicago Cubs, but you're.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Also starting for our yeah, our guy, right Jay, Hey,
- 32:58Speaker 1: who was the right fielder. It was that was a
- 33:01Speaker 1: very I remember when Joe pulled that trigger and started
- 33:04Speaker 1: game one. It was like whoa right, And it was
- 33:07Speaker 1: like you're excited, You're happy. There's also like, oh ship,
- 33:11Speaker 1: Jay is not playing. Jay's played, Like Jay just signed,
- 33:15Speaker 1: he's one of our guys.
- 33:16Speaker 7: It was it was hard because they were texting me.
- 33:19Speaker 7: I'll give you an inside. It was Davy, you know,
- 33:22Speaker 7: and he's texting me. He's like, hey, you're going to
- 33:25Speaker 7: start game one. This is before you know how we
- 33:26Speaker 7: send the lineup. Yeah, And I'm thinking, like you know,
- 33:30Speaker 7: like what I mean, I'm like my role was like
- 33:34Speaker 7: to pinch hit and like the picture come in and
- 33:36Speaker 7: then I walk off, or like I will walk That
- 33:39Speaker 7: was kind of like my role.
- 33:40Speaker 4: Right, I'm not clowning it. I mean that's just really
- 33:43Speaker 4: what I was there to do.
- 33:44Speaker 7: I understood that matter, so so I'm like okay, and
- 33:48Speaker 7: again the dog in me is like, oh, I can't
- 33:51Speaker 7: wait right, Like I'm like, yeah, I'm gonna shock the world.
- 33:55Speaker 4: Then this clown started. What happened to Jays? He like lost?
- 34:00Speaker 4: And then I felt for Jay hey, because everyone did.
- 34:03Speaker 4: He was that was a tough year.
- 34:04Speaker 7: Do you want to talk about another guy with character
- 34:06Speaker 7: that posted under tremendous pressure and wait didn't have the year?
- 34:11Speaker 7: Mad respect for that character that he just towed the line.
- 34:15Speaker 7: And then I was like, where am I playing? He's
- 34:18Speaker 7: like left field and I'm like okay, cool. Five minutes later, Hey,
- 34:22Speaker 7: what do you think about playing right field? I'm like,
- 34:24Speaker 7: are you kidding? I haven't played. I hadn't started. I
- 34:26Speaker 7: don't know how many days it's been, what is it
- 34:28Speaker 7: like thirty days between like well, I don't even know.
- 34:31Speaker 4: It's probably been two months since I started a game.
- 34:34Speaker 7: And I was like, uh, yeah, wherever you want to
- 34:36Speaker 7: play me right. He's like, well, Zoe wants to play
- 34:39Speaker 7: it stay and left. I'm like, yeah, I'll go play right.
- 34:40Speaker 7: I don't know the last time I played right field.
- 34:42Speaker 7: I was like, whatever, dude, I'm ready to roll. And
- 34:45Speaker 7: I got nervous.
- 34:46Speaker 4: Yeah. I just kept saying.
- 34:50Speaker 7: Doc used to tell us all the time when you
- 34:53Speaker 7: get scared, it's the same emotion as being excited, but
- 34:58Speaker 7: they manifest too total different ways. And so when you
- 35:02Speaker 7: feel that butterfly antsy feeling, just tell yourself how jacked
- 35:06Speaker 7: up and excited you are. And I started doing that
- 35:09Speaker 7: in fifteen, and like it changed my career, Like wow,
- 35:12Speaker 7: I couldn't swing at the first pitch of a ball
- 35:14Speaker 7: game when I would delete off because I was afraid
- 35:15Speaker 7: to get out.
- 35:16Speaker 4: For seven years, I couldn't do it. Go look, it's
- 35:19Speaker 4: just pumped.
- 35:19Speaker 7: Strike wad and I had to go say that story.
- 35:22Speaker 7: And then I hit one and I'm like, oh my gosh,
- 35:24Speaker 7: this thing works. So that's why I just kept telling
- 35:26Speaker 7: myself every three seconds, I'm excited, I'm excited into.
- 35:30Speaker 4: Me, Please hit it.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Meanwhile, it's like twenty degrees in Cleveland. The wind whirling
- 35:40Speaker 1: fans are crazy. We we go down three to one, right,
- 35:47Speaker 1: and everyone. This is why I we love doing this
- 35:50Speaker 1: is because people want to talk about sixteen like KB
- 35:55Speaker 1: won the MVP. Lester's just finished second, the cy Young. Right,
- 35:59Speaker 1: we have a lot of big names, but without the
- 36:02Speaker 1: role of seriously, you three in particular, so there as well.
- 36:07Speaker 1: I put myself in that boat. Yeah you're in that
- 36:09Speaker 1: boat too. Yeah, I was once a week and you
- 36:12Speaker 1: know what, you were a role player who taught.
- 36:14Speaker 3: A lot of I don't know, I just mean like
- 36:17Speaker 3: I can relate to that and how hard it is
- 36:18Speaker 3: to pinch hit to not play for a month, and
- 36:22Speaker 3: you know I hadn't I had four days off and
- 36:25Speaker 3: if Lester sucked and came out in the third, no,
- 36:28Speaker 3: I get your man out of there.
- 36:29Speaker 2: But we had we had Tommy Lstell on the team.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Tommy quit at some point home they sent they sent
- 36:35Speaker 1: Tommy down, which was bullshit, right. We were pissed that
- 36:39Speaker 1: they sent Tommy down because it was for it was
- 36:41Speaker 1: like a paper move and they needed a spot and
- 36:43Speaker 1: Tommy Lestell had an option and Tommy was like fuck that,
- 36:46Speaker 1: like I'm your It was it was you two that
- 36:49Speaker 1: were like yeah, right he was. Tommy was the left
- 36:51Speaker 1: off the bench and we they banged off the bench.
- 36:53Speaker 1: They were our guys. So when they sent Tommy down,
- 36:56Speaker 1: Tommy was like, fuck this, I'm going home, and like
- 36:59Speaker 1: Tommy went home. I remember, I was so mad that
- 37:02Speaker 1: they sent him down, and I was so mad at
- 37:05Speaker 1: Tommy for like quitting on us.
- 37:07Speaker 2: But in the end, he didn't quit on us. He
- 37:09Speaker 2: was just he was so upset.
- 37:11Speaker 5: I was in triple A when that happened, and I
- 37:13Speaker 5: remember texting Tommy, Hey, you know, it's not that bad
- 37:16Speaker 5: down here, you know, coming out grind, you know.
- 37:19Speaker 7: So I'd come back. I'd gotten what I had. I
- 37:23Speaker 7: had no bleak in New York. I shouldn't have kept swinging,
- 37:27Speaker 7: and I was an idiot. But anyhow, so I come back.
- 37:30Speaker 7: You guys have been hitting off the bench, and uh,
- 37:34Speaker 7: I don't know what's gonna happen.
- 37:35Speaker 4: I'm just taking doing So I come. I come back.
- 37:40Speaker 7: So great for you, Roussille, You'll get a good laugh
- 37:43Speaker 7: out of this. So I come back, and then I
- 37:46Speaker 7: see the news and it's the same thing.
- 37:48Speaker 4: Right.
- 37:48Speaker 7: I've been on the other side of that coin like
- 37:50Speaker 7: so many times, and I know people, all of us
- 37:54Speaker 7: are so tight.
- 37:55Speaker 4: It's like we got.
- 37:56Speaker 7: I mean, we were the best in the world because
- 37:58Speaker 7: we had so much talent, right, And it was like, man,
- 38:00Speaker 7: you only got twenty five spots. There's only so many roles.
- 38:02Speaker 7: So he gets sent down and I felt the same way.
- 38:05Speaker 4: I felt bad. I texted him.
- 38:07Speaker 7: But then I was like, the quitting thing, really really,
- 38:09Speaker 7: I've never seen that, and that really bothered me. So
- 38:12Speaker 7: but I was in a really tough situation because I
- 38:14Speaker 7: was the cause of it. So we're playing the Mariners
- 38:17Speaker 7: the first game and Joe hits me lead off and
- 38:21Speaker 7: do you remember we had a.
- 38:24Speaker 4: Scouting Do you remember this?
- 38:25Speaker 7: So we finished the scouting thing and you come over
- 38:28Speaker 7: and we're walking out of the room.
- 38:29Speaker 4: I hadn't been there.
- 38:30Speaker 7: Twenty minutes and he pulls the ROSSI right, he cocks,
- 38:33Speaker 7: come here.
- 38:34Speaker 4: He goes, if you screw this up? Mother, right, mother,
- 38:37Speaker 4: you screw this up? We just sent a really good guy.
- 38:39Speaker 4: Do you better get your stuff together? And I went
- 38:42Speaker 4: in the face, I'm dead serious. I come back. It
- 38:45Speaker 4: ain't many times I wanted to go toe to toe
- 38:47Speaker 4: roll and I was like, are you really coming at
- 38:49Speaker 4: me like that right now? And so we played the game.
- 38:52Speaker 7: I go I think it was two for four of
- 38:54Speaker 7: the walk, I hit a two run single.
- 38:56Speaker 4: We win the game, and you're like, great game. I'm like, bro,
- 38:59Speaker 4: freaking don't talk for like I.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Had when I got traded.
- 39:03Speaker 1: When I got traded here Andrew Cashner I got who
- 39:05Speaker 1: I got traded for was throwing like throwing one hundred
- 39:08Speaker 1: in San Diego, and Jeff Baker goes, hey, Riz, you
- 39:11Speaker 1: better fucking pan out because cash is over there in
- 39:13Speaker 1: San Diego throwing a huntress. And to this day, remember
- 39:16Speaker 1: remember but Tommy ended up addressing the team when he
- 39:19Speaker 1: came back and was just like he like through his
- 39:21Speaker 1: own personal thing. And Tommy's one of the my favorite
- 39:25Speaker 1: teammates I ever had.
- 39:26Speaker 3: It was a big deal. We had team meeting. It
- 39:27Speaker 3: was it was. It was like a lot of turmoil.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Remember that that was within the season, within the greatest
- 39:32Speaker 1: season of like the history of this organization. Right, so
- 39:36Speaker 1: we we go down three to one, Right, where where
- 39:39Speaker 1: do you guys feel like we have we can win this?
- 39:43Speaker 2: Like, where is your guys motivation?
- 39:44Speaker 1: Because not being the everyday guy, are you guys just
- 39:48Speaker 1: like fuck?
- 39:48Speaker 2: Like do you feel helpful for me?
- 39:51Speaker 7: When we went down three to one, I said to you,
- 39:55Speaker 7: I was like, man, these movers have been asking me
- 39:57Speaker 7: when to come pick my stuff up, and I.
- 40:00Speaker 4: Know when to send him because we're winning this thing.
- 40:02Speaker 3: Do you remember when I yeah, I thought we were
- 40:04Speaker 3: going neighbors.
- 40:05Speaker 7: Wanting to come grab myself because we're going seven boys
- 40:08Speaker 7: and winning.
- 40:09Speaker 2: So we're down three to one.
- 40:11Speaker 1: We win game five, we go into game we roll
- 40:13Speaker 1: in game six, we go into game seven. Let's get
- 40:17Speaker 1: right to the rain delay. Where where are you guys
- 40:20Speaker 1: at raj hits.
- 40:21Speaker 2: This home run? Right?
- 40:22Speaker 1: All these emotions where I know where I was at
- 40:25Speaker 1: on first base? Where are you guys at on Game seven?
- 40:28Speaker 1: After Rajer hits the home run? What's going through your minds?
- 40:32Speaker 1: I mean, I like when they took Kendrick Sala, I
- 40:35Speaker 1: was like, what the fuck's going on? Like that's that
- 40:38Speaker 1: was like my west where my head was at, and
- 40:40Speaker 1: you know that's where I was.
- 40:42Speaker 3: He led the league in era that year.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, and he like, don't And there was
- 40:47Speaker 1: like there's like statistics that go through you know, third
- 40:50Speaker 1: time three one right, yeaheah one.
- 40:52Speaker 3: Until I got in and fucked it up.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Yeah, So yeah, that that was kind of where my
- 40:55Speaker 1: head was at. And then we get to the rain delay,
- 40:57Speaker 1: and and uh yeah, I mean I think Jay was
- 41:01Speaker 1: just speak his mind what everybody thought.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Yeah, wanted to win for the boys. It's do you
- 41:05Speaker 2: guys have everythink a curse or any of that pressure.
- 41:08Speaker 4: As soon as Roger Davis hit it, yeah, oh yeah.
- 41:11Speaker 4: So this is what it's like to be a Cups fan, like.
- 41:16Speaker 6: Wheting with two year old guy.
- 41:18Speaker 5: I was like, we're up through seven, seven to three
- 41:20Speaker 5: at the time, whatever, and then he hits a homer
- 41:22Speaker 5: and I as loud as the stadium was the dugout.
- 41:26Speaker 6: If you could hear a pencil drop, we were.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Ghost and that dug out.
- 41:30Speaker 5: I heard Rob just yelling a fuck, you know, and
- 41:34Speaker 5: I'm just like, no way, like, no way, We're about
- 41:36Speaker 5: to lose around and then yeah, the rain delay and
- 41:39Speaker 5: I'm walking in right before.
- 41:43Speaker 4: You know, Jay calls all the guys into the weight room.
- 41:46Speaker 5: Davy pulls me aside, and he's like, hey, when we
- 41:48Speaker 5: picked this back up, Shoreber's Shoreber gets a Shober hits
- 41:51Speaker 5: a double. His initial, you know, plan was like, he
- 41:55Speaker 5: hits a double, you're gonna pinch it. If it's a
- 41:57Speaker 5: base hit, he's gonna stay out there. So like all right,
- 42:00Speaker 5: I'm I'm walking into the weight room as Jays like
- 42:03Speaker 5: all right, and then Davy wants to walk in and
- 42:05Speaker 5: he's like, no, no, no, remember I remember that?
- 42:07Speaker 6: Yeahs the boys And I was like, oh ship, And
- 42:10Speaker 6: then seemed.
- 42:14Speaker 3: And I got him from the bench. Mary he was
- 42:16Speaker 3: only I went and got him from the bench. But
- 42:19Speaker 3: I got to the bench and he's sobbing on the
- 42:21Speaker 3: bench his head and like, you know, he never showed
- 42:24Speaker 3: that kind of emotion and this giant of a man.
- 42:26Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, I'm chill singing about it. I'm like, bro,
- 42:29Speaker 3: come here, but we're not even we're not even sniffing
- 42:31Speaker 3: this game, and you're not on our team, you know, right.
- 42:33Speaker 7: Yeah, I felt like it was the greatest thing because
- 42:37Speaker 7: when we when he did it and I said something,
- 42:39Speaker 7: I say something of the Jay Hey, I randomly saw
- 42:42Speaker 7: him at Jackson Hole and said the same thing like
- 42:44Speaker 7: years ago. It was like, uh, bro, it was just
- 42:48Speaker 7: so well timed and authentic and Jay Hay with everything
- 42:52Speaker 7: that Jay Hay had going on, just him, but the
- 42:55Speaker 7: layer of the team of course, but like it was
- 42:58Speaker 7: so authentic again and genuine that it was like and
- 43:01Speaker 7: I get shivers every time sometimes I get choked up
- 43:03Speaker 7: because like when you see Chappie and you're like, do
- 43:06Speaker 7: this guy, it's the man who was everything.
- 43:10Speaker 4: I mean, he's got no more bullets left. The guy
- 43:12Speaker 4: hits three stummers, hits a round ball, round bat off
- 43:15Speaker 4: a round pole, three and fifty.
- 43:17Speaker 7: It's like and then we went out there and thumped
- 43:19Speaker 7: them and it was like amazing. But I did have
- 43:24Speaker 7: the emotion when he hit it off the thing. I
- 43:26Speaker 7: vividly remember Lebron James jumping up and yeah yeah, and
- 43:32Speaker 7: I'm like, I freaking hate the cabs, right, And I'm
- 43:36Speaker 7: like and the next thing I thought is my jaw
- 43:38Speaker 7: was like this as he was running around, and I
- 43:41Speaker 7: remember the cameras. I'm like, if they catch a glimpse
- 43:44Speaker 7: of my jaw. I literally was thinking this, this is
- 43:46Speaker 7: going to be on the front page or something. I
- 43:48Speaker 7: look like an idiot. And then I was like, then
- 43:52Speaker 7: the rain.
- 43:52Speaker 3: Delay happened, and then it kind of reset, we need
- 43:54Speaker 3: to get a list of teams. You actually like organization? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 43:59Speaker 3: you got.
- 44:00Speaker 2: But bro, the biggest, the biggest, the biggest.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Play in the World series in my opinion, other than
- 44:05Speaker 1: Chappie getting through the ninth on the offensive side as
- 44:09Speaker 1: you you.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Got to walk us through. I've thought about this so
- 44:15Speaker 3: many times.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Make the picture.
- 44:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean Schwarves gets on and you pinch run
- 44:21Speaker 3: for Swarves.
- 44:22Speaker 2: So tenth inning, tenth inning, Game seven of the World Series.
- 44:26Speaker 5: I'm in the you know, I see Sharves on leadoff rocket.
- 44:29Speaker 4: No, it wasn't a double. So I'm like, oh, I'm not.
- 44:32Speaker 3: I'm not.
- 44:33Speaker 4: I'm not there yet. But I'm like, I'm like peeking over.
- 44:37Speaker 3: You're changed his mind.
- 44:38Speaker 4: You're like, right away, we got it over. The manager
- 44:43Speaker 4: does change.
- 44:45Speaker 2: That's like that's a different like story too. Now you're
- 44:48Speaker 2: you're like, oh, show.
- 44:49Speaker 5: But I'm like that see him on first and I'm
- 44:51Speaker 5: peeking over at Joe and he's talking to Davy and
- 44:53Speaker 5: you could like I could read his lips and he said,
- 44:55Speaker 5: I'll moral And then as soon as he said that,
- 44:57Speaker 5: Davy turns around, looks at me. We lock and he's like, go.
- 45:01Speaker 5: I was like, oh, Ship, you know what I mean.
- 45:03Speaker 5: Game seven and Tygers we're an extras. Like I remember
- 45:06Speaker 5: being the most nervous I've ever been on a baseball
- 45:09Speaker 5: field on those four steps getting out to the field,
- 45:13Speaker 5: I was like, oh shit.
- 45:14Speaker 6: I don't even want I didn't want a trip.
- 45:15Speaker 4: I just wanted to get the first.
- 45:16Speaker 5: The moment I got the first and I looked around
- 45:20Speaker 5: and I saw like the stadium packed to the gills.
- 45:23Speaker 5: That's a big stadium that holds a lot of people.
- 45:25Speaker 5: And Nap was on first and uh hiders there. I
- 45:31Speaker 5: don't remember, honestly, I know. I think he was like,
- 45:34Speaker 5: just don't get picked off. I think what was going
- 45:36Speaker 5: through my mind as well. But I remember making a
- 45:38Speaker 5: comment to that it's like this just pretty cool, huh,
- 45:42Speaker 5: you know, like trying to calm myself down here, like
- 45:44Speaker 5: through through you know, through little comments here.
- 45:46Speaker 9: And he didn't say anything. He was a kind of
- 45:48Speaker 9: a mute over there to he didn't say anything. And
- 45:50Speaker 9: when he didn't say anything, was locked. It's it's so yeah.
- 45:55Speaker 9: And Seaw was pitching.
- 45:56Speaker 5: He picked over a couple of times and came he
- 46:00Speaker 5: was hitting it, and I, you know, I knew I wasn't
- 46:02Speaker 5: gonna steal.
- 46:03Speaker 4: I looked over the second base and it looked one
- 46:04Speaker 4: hundred feet away.
- 46:05Speaker 5: It looked so far, and so when he hit that
- 46:09Speaker 5: flat ball, obviously no outs. We're taught to tag, but
- 46:14Speaker 5: in that moment, I was more reading Davis as the
- 46:17Speaker 5: way he was coasting to the ball, and as an outfielder, like,
- 46:22Speaker 5: I know when that's happening, it's either a homer, like
- 46:24Speaker 5: he's either it's either going to be over his head
- 46:26Speaker 5: or for a homer, or he's going to make the
- 46:28Speaker 5: play he wasn't full.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Of if that's if that's an hour earlier, or it's
- 46:35Speaker 1: over those bushes, it's a home. Yeah, rushed up because
- 46:38Speaker 1: the wind turned around and started blowing in from there.
- 46:40Speaker 6: So it was it was when I knew it was
- 46:43Speaker 6: either going to be a home or cot.
- 46:44Speaker 5: I was like, I got to get back because if
- 46:45Speaker 5: it's caught, I got to be on second. And if
- 46:47Speaker 5: it's a homer, like, he's going to break and we're
- 46:49Speaker 5: going to jog together and it's going to be sick.
- 46:51Speaker 4: So yeah, I just went back.
- 46:53Speaker 1: To be able to do that at twenty two years
- 46:55Speaker 1: old as a rookie is like insane. And what people
- 47:00Speaker 1: don't understand at home is that's not how we're taught
- 47:02Speaker 1: to play. You're taught to go halfway three quarters and
- 47:06Speaker 1: then you go tag up with no outs at first base,
- 47:09Speaker 1: but your instincts taken over, got you the second and
- 47:13Speaker 1: then the rest is history.
- 47:15Speaker 3: Well, and that's why I think it's so important, every
- 47:17Speaker 3: little detail we talk about that when you the biggest
- 47:21Speaker 3: games of your life, and the fact of you learn
- 47:24Speaker 3: that a long time ago in player development and why
- 47:28Speaker 3: why coaches are important and why you know, learning throughout
- 47:31Speaker 3: and growing and seeing certain moments and you go and
- 47:34Speaker 3: you do that, and like I wasn't even thinking about
- 47:36Speaker 3: I was thinking about the homer. I wasn't even thinking
- 47:38Speaker 3: about that. And you tag up and go, and then
- 47:41Speaker 3: they walk Riz and then Zoe and I.
- 47:44Speaker 5: So I tag up and I get the second and
- 47:47Speaker 5: obviously I felt so long to get there, and then
- 47:50Speaker 5: I slide and Lindor just like kept trying to like
- 47:53Speaker 5: tag me and tag me, just like you know, he
- 47:56Speaker 5: wanted me to like to step off in that excitement,
- 47:59Speaker 5: and I've made sure all I gotta have.
- 48:02Speaker 4: But I knew what was going to happen.
- 48:03Speaker 5: They were going to walk you to fase and Zoe
- 48:07Speaker 5: was the hottest hitter in that whole series, you know,
- 48:10Speaker 5: and uh, and I know a little bit of you know,
- 48:13Speaker 5: play Withooden Door a little bit in high school with
- 48:15Speaker 5: one of those USA teams, and I look back at him,
- 48:17Speaker 5: I go this is a bad decision because you know,
- 48:20Speaker 5: to walk him into fase. Oh and uh and he
- 48:22Speaker 5: was also very quiet, didn't say anything to me, and
- 48:25Speaker 5: uh yeah the rest.
- 48:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that's I mean, that's well, that's the little that's
- 48:30Speaker 1: where we talked about.
- 48:30Speaker 2: And it's been the theme of everyone.
- 48:33Speaker 4: Were you thinking when you when that happened? Right when
- 48:36Speaker 4: he finish his tagging, you're walking up. You want to
- 48:39Speaker 4: be the man you want to around.
- 48:41Speaker 1: I'm starting going through my whole fucking data data mind.
- 48:44Speaker 4: Well give it. I want to hear it.
- 48:46Speaker 1: I'm like, all right, or are they going to pitch
- 48:48Speaker 1: to me? If he does pitch me, he's gonna be
- 48:49Speaker 1: aggressive with me. Am I swinging early? I know he
- 48:52Speaker 1: throws the cutter and he likes to do it. Do
- 48:56Speaker 1: I swing early? The situation is there's one out maybe,
- 49:00Speaker 1: So I'm running all these numbers through my head as
- 49:02Speaker 1: I'm taking that little walk to the dugout, and I'm like,
- 49:05Speaker 1: they're probably gonna walk me, but I can't show that
- 49:08Speaker 1: they're gonna walk me. And I get up there, I'm like,
- 49:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna fucking take my bat and drive this run.
- 49:13Speaker 1: And the next thing you know, I see the four oh,
- 49:17Speaker 1: the intentional walk. I'm like, fuck right, Game seven of
- 49:20Speaker 1: the World Series, which you dream of, I selfishly wanted
- 49:24Speaker 1: that moment.
- 49:25Speaker 3: Yeah, when you were locked in and you had a
- 49:26Speaker 3: home run the night before, Like, yeah, you were, you
- 49:28Speaker 3: were swinging a good Yeah.
- 49:29Speaker 1: Well we didn't even get into this, which we need
- 49:32Speaker 1: to pivot. Game four three or four of the NLCS,
- 49:38Speaker 1: I was. I was stunk in the DS. I was
- 49:41Speaker 1: irrelevant the first three games of the DS. I also
- 49:45Speaker 1: or CS. I also stunk. I was irrelevant to our team.
- 49:48Speaker 1: I was just playing defense, and I switched over to
- 49:52Speaker 1: the Matt Caesar bat.
- 49:53Speaker 3: Remember that?
- 49:54Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 49:55Speaker 2: That literally like I got hot with that. It was
- 49:59Speaker 2: a thirty three and a hal half three and a
- 50:01Speaker 2: half thirty one. Well, I think I think you did
- 50:03Speaker 2: that like during the season.
- 50:04Speaker 1: I've done it well because with so I would choke
- 50:06Speaker 1: up with two strikes, So instead of choking when I
- 50:09Speaker 1: my swing got long, I would go to your bat
- 50:11Speaker 1: because it was shorter, so I would keep me tighter.
- 50:15Speaker 1: But I switched to your bat, and I took off
- 50:18Speaker 1: in the playoffs, and I wrote that the whole way.
- 50:20Speaker 1: I remember Ken Rosenthal asked me in the World Series, Hey,
- 50:23Speaker 1: I noticed it was in a different bat, and I
- 50:25Speaker 1: told him the story, but I was like, Ken, please
- 50:28Speaker 1: do not break this because like I don't want them
- 50:32Speaker 1: to know I'm using something shorter, because I don't want
- 50:35Speaker 1: them to adjust. They're they're scanning, and like that's what
- 50:39Speaker 1: I believe. I like, I literally believe I didn't use
- 50:42Speaker 1: your bat with your name on it.
- 50:43Speaker 2: If it had my name on it, I did it.
- 50:45Speaker 2: I did it. I think the World Series, I was.
- 50:47Speaker 1: Like, you know, just the fact that you change something up,
- 50:50Speaker 1: you know, it helps put something in your brain.
- 50:54Speaker 3: It's funny how mental.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it really is. But throw that bat was.
- 50:58Speaker 3: Like, and then you went off.
- 51:00Speaker 1: I went a went off, hid homer in the I
- 51:03Speaker 1: hit a homer with it in the CS. I rolled
- 51:05Speaker 1: in the World Series. But if I don't switch to
- 51:07Speaker 1: the Mats season model Marucci bat, you say you still
- 51:11Speaker 1: have it on your back maybe one seventeen, have it
- 51:14Speaker 1: under my bed in case I got was it was? It?
- 51:18Speaker 1: Was it for that Christmas? You signed me one? Yeah,
- 51:21Speaker 1: your dad had sign me a bat for Christmas.
- 51:23Speaker 2: I still have a house. Yeah.
- 51:25Speaker 1: I mean, dude, there's there's a lot of like coincidence
- 51:28Speaker 1: is with that too, because that was the which is
- 51:32Speaker 1: this is just crazy. The same day that my second
- 51:35Speaker 1: sixty came out was the day you switched to the
- 51:38Speaker 1: bat no ship. Yeah, and so you did that that
- 51:40Speaker 1: recoup of the recap of the bow Marrow donation, they
- 51:44Speaker 1: almost kind of like did it around twenty sixteen season
- 51:47Speaker 1: and then they released it that day and then you
- 51:50Speaker 1: changed your bat and off, So like that's I just
- 51:54Speaker 1: really don't think that there's things like full circle. Yeah, yeah,
- 51:57Speaker 1: wild you know, because you battle survived cancer. I donated
- 52:01Speaker 1: bone barrow to help somebody survive cancer. On that day
- 52:06Speaker 1: that it was released, you changed your bat.
- 52:08Speaker 2: Damn. I didn't know that.
- 52:09Speaker 1: And so it's like I don't know, Well, it's the
- 52:12Speaker 1: power too of like zeus, Yeah, our friendship was thinking
- 52:16Speaker 1: about it, our friendship working out. Like if if we
- 52:19Speaker 1: didn't work out together, if we weren't comfortable and we
- 52:22Speaker 1: didn't build that relationship, I'm not touching your bat ever,
- 52:24Speaker 1: you know what I mean. It's like all these things
- 52:27Speaker 1: have to come together for us to win, and then
- 52:30Speaker 1: we do.
- 52:31Speaker 3: And what are you guys thinking? How you score that run?
- 52:35Speaker 3: We win? We got a little hairy, but they got
- 52:38Speaker 3: one back. We gets that big hit to give us
- 52:39Speaker 3: the second one, right.
- 52:41Speaker 2: He'll let you know.
- 52:44Speaker 4: I don't think I agree.
- 52:46Speaker 2: Even that grand slam and uh.
- 52:49Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that was one of my favorite moments in
- 52:51Speaker 3: the season. That grand slam he hit was epic with
- 52:54Speaker 3: all the chess match with Joe and Dabs and bringing
- 52:56Speaker 3: Blanton and Switch again. And it wasn't one were two,
- 53:01Speaker 3: he was O two.
- 53:02Speaker 4: I was hitting and I was wanting the same spot.
- 53:05Speaker 4: I'm like, oh my gosh, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm
- 53:06Speaker 4: gonna get my glory. This is great.
- 53:09Speaker 3: I love your mental talk to yourself, this is me,
- 53:15Speaker 3: You're good.
- 53:15Speaker 7: And then hitstagram sound like that's such a better situation.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Yeah, No, dude, Maggy came up so big for us,
- 53:23Speaker 1: and I feel like he does well.
- 53:25Speaker 3: And I'm from a catcher standpoint, and I can't wait
- 53:27Speaker 3: to talk to Meggie because just all the catching side
- 53:29Speaker 3: of it. But the fun thing for me is like
- 53:33Speaker 3: when I came out of the game, I got I walked,
- 53:35Speaker 3: got pitched in four, and then he came in the
- 53:37Speaker 3: game and got chappy through that ninth and he spun
- 53:40Speaker 3: it a lot, right, he spawned, He spawned my gun
- 53:42Speaker 3: like he was in there and locked in and it
- 53:45Speaker 3: just shows like, like we we used on our twenty
- 53:48Speaker 3: five men roster. I think we used like twenty four
- 53:50Speaker 3: to twenty three against from from a position player standpoint.
- 53:55Speaker 3: So but yeah, I go back to to Miggy getting
- 54:02Speaker 3: those outs from a catcher standpoint. I was like, Oh,
- 54:04Speaker 3: he's a perfect fit right now, even though you don't
- 54:06Speaker 3: want to come out of the game, You're like, oh,
- 54:08Speaker 3: this worked out perfectly because how he called his game
- 54:11Speaker 3: so much differently than I did. He was champion.
- 54:13Speaker 1: There's been so many teams throughout our careers right where
- 54:16Speaker 1: it was a great team, special team. A lot of
- 54:19Speaker 1: memories you make and go down the roster of guys
- 54:21Speaker 1: we've all played with, right, Oh, this guy was a
- 54:23Speaker 1: great dude. I missed this guy. But winning in sixteen
- 54:29Speaker 1: forever links us and no matter where we are in life,
- 54:32Speaker 1: no matter up, down, high, low, whatever, We're always going
- 54:36Speaker 1: to be linked because we won. And that's the coolest
- 54:38Speaker 1: part about winning a championship that I don't think you
- 54:42Speaker 1: realize until you win. Like all the guys I played
- 54:44Speaker 1: with before this, I love to death, right, But the
- 54:47Speaker 1: bond and friendship I have with my teammates from twenty
- 54:52Speaker 1: sixteen is everything.
- 54:53Speaker 3: Family.
- 54:53Speaker 1: I really appreciate you guys coming on and joining the pod,
- 54:58Speaker 1: and I can't wait for this release.
- 55:00Speaker 3: We'll party a little bit tonight. Yeah yeah man, thanks boys.
- 55:03Speaker 2: It's a rap.
- 55:05Speaker 4: All right. That was nice.
- 55:07Speaker 3: That was awesome story. I got you like
