Transcript
- 0:02[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, folks.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the episode of Film Study.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_01]: This is Ken McEuse again, it's time for our matchup show with the defense earlier, but now we're talking offence.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_01]: Joining me is always for that is Frazier to bar, Frazier, how you doing?
- 0:13[SPEAKER_00]: It would get Ken Gullaby back going for the offensive show, had a great matchup show on the defensive side, talking about how the Ravens can get to Pinnix on some quick pressures so we can force him out of the pocket where he's not mobile anymore and get some advent throws to the defense and then also looking to see if the Ravens will come out a little more base this week as they're going against the formidable running back and be John Robinson.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, certainly, one of the things that we even have to their advantage in this is that they play against a zone scheme, Atlanta, even more extreme in that regard, it'd be John Robinson, certainly one of the most talented backs in the entire football league, and that's one of the things I think I'm eager to see is whether or not they try a gimmick defense against Drake London who gets a very high
- 1:04[SPEAKER_01]: target share percentage for the Falcons receivers.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_01]: They do also run a fair number of outlet balls to be general Robinson and use him on routes of fair amount, but it's really the drink London show on the other side of the ball and they really, really is a question that the Titans were able to successfully avoid Nate Wiggins and whether the Ravens could do something about that by having Wiggins travel with London even if that means covering it in the slot
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: All right, but let's turn our minds to the offense here.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_01]: Start us off with your first matchup issue here.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, first matchup of the night is Tyler Huntley versus a loaded box for the Falcons.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think what we saw last week with Lamar going out, we saw Tennessee take two steps, two and a half steps towards the line of scrimmage, their safety's meaning, really compressing the box
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: forcing Tyler Huntley to make the right decisions and essentially saying that they can't beat them over to top in terms of deep balls, whether it would be Tes Walker or whoever in terms of taking the top off the defense.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: So I think.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: Tyler Huntley who isn't really known for someone that's going to push the ball down field.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: He's someone that's going to hit those middle to intermediate throws really targeting mark Andrews on those quick stick routes.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: You'll get quick outs from today most likely or Bateman.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm really trying to see if
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: Declan Doyle can potentially unlock a new side of Snoop that we haven't seen in the past.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe scheme of some things for Zayf flowers to go deep.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: I really want to see if Huntley can evolve into a different kind of pastor than he has been in the past.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_01]: it's a massive ask, but the Ravens need to do it because they won't win the way they've played football in the second half.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: They had a first half where Lamar Jackson averaged, I think in 11.7 a dot in the second half, Tyler Huntley was 0.3.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: His average pass went one foot, that one yard, one foot passed the line of scrimmage.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_01]: So they can't have that be the result this week and they need to
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: Do some very different things to beat this and years and mine were so similar on this respect I'm just going to go ahead and roll it in the mind right now, but mine is deckland oil versus compressed defensive scheme It comes in a couple of different forms the first is the compression line of the line of scrimmage needs
- 3:47[SPEAKER_01]: means that the ravens need to be able to get the football outside, whether by boot or pass or run outside of that tackle box is quickly as possible.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't mean all everything has to be a wide receiver screen to the outside, but they need to have plays.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_01]: If they need to have some hot reads, if they need them, they need to have some quick passes to the outside, they need to have some runs to the outside, and they need to have some boot plays probably that will get that ball outside the pocket and create an opportunity
- 4:17[SPEAKER_01]: That's the only way they'll get it later to call off the dogs if they have any
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: tendencies not right we're in inclination to use a lot of bodies at the line of scrimmage at land as one of the few the lowest blitzing teams in national football league they were they were second I think about the 31st in blitz rate but I think that could change a lot of their past pressures are out this week's area Smith as a concussion they've lost James Pierce already until midseason probably so the guys they have left Samson Ebecom is probably their big past pressure that they have left that's not particularly good for
- 4:54[SPEAKER_01]: you know, he'd be a perfectly good number three or four guy, but it's not the guy you want to do number one.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: So there are a lot of trouble in terms of what they can bring me as a past, or so I think that they will probably want to crowd the line of scrimmage.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's natural for any defense coordinator, what the crowd the line of scrimmage against Tyler Huntley, until he proves he can beat you over the top.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: It has been the case with Tyler Huntley in the past that the balls had been schemeed out of his hand very quickly.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: Doyle needs to fight that tendency with a playbook for Tyler Huntley, Huntley that actually avoids some of these pitfalls that have occurred before.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: The 21 losing streak.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: Greg Roman could not figure it out he could not figure out a way to make Tyler Huntley somebody different from who he was and the Ravens dropped from the number one seed in the entire conference to completely out of the playoffs with that losing streak they had with Huntley down the stretch.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_01]: He hasn't been a terrible A dot player this whole year and some of what happened in the second half was them reacting to the fact that a 24-7 lead and need to get to the finish line But Doyle of all the Ravens coaches has an enormous task at hand.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: I think even more so than the defensive side and the defensive side with this hot Atlanta offense has a lot to figure out as well.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, and I really anticipate that
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: Atlanta will come out in a lot of single high if they are in too high they're probably rotate down the robber in terms of whether it's going to be cover three sky or single high robber concept with the cover one so I think we're going to see a lot of man coverage Unless they want to death with with say flowers, but other than that, I think they're probably going to try and bracket him if they do go man and then take their chances with baitmen on the outside or
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see if we can get a really good game out of the tight ends after Smith going down this week.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, one of the things about a robber is it's going to be extremely effective coming down to the box more so against a quarterback like Tyler Huntley where there are trying to play games to get guys between level two and three with such regularity and they don't really trust the deepball.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: I do think I want to see Tyler and Doyle be on the same page to try and get the ball down
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: To to Walker say it was the one player who can really burn those guys on the back again They have a couple ball hocks in that secondary in base and Watts who are very dangerous obviously in terms of giving that football away All right, we'll come back in a minute and we'll have our second matchup All right, we're back.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: Fraser.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: What's your second key matchup of the day for this game?
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, I have the Ravens running back rotation versus the Atlanta Falcons front.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: Last week, we really did anticipate Derek Henry having a big time regular game that we're used to.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: That wasn't the case.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: Titans really did shut him down in terms of him getting started before he hits the whole, tripping him up at the Lime Scrimmage, hitting a real hard when the knees, I think,
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: quarter of what's in made a good point, I think I want to pass it in the fan that during media availability after the game, he only had four questions available, and then he went right to treatment.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: So I think he was feeling real sore after the game.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: So good thing this is a Sunday night game, so a little more extra rest in terms of timing.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: But I want to see more justice,
- 8:23[SPEAKER_00]: In terms of just spelling him and not forcing Derek Henry to be this workhorse, I mean, we do have to remember he is 32 correct.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's right.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not looking at it right now, but I guess he's still he's so older running back.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: I know we think him to be this amazing great all time beast, but he still is human.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: So we need to really manage his snap count.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_00]: Get Hill in there.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why we really haven't seen Ali.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what the opposition of even getting him one or two carries is.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: just to spell, but I really want to see a rotation of running backs that forces Atlanta to be honest in how they're attacking the line of scrimmage.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: Be nice, we did see Ali, be a guy who could break out of some of the condensed formations we talked about the first half of this show was that he had since it had you last year had a big screen pass that went for, I think it went for the touchdown, right?
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: So they had a long play,
- 9:24[SPEAKER_01]: but didn't go for a touchdown to Hopkins, you know, a slant.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: And then they had a long play that was outside the box that went for a screen pass touchdown, the 24-nothing win.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: And at that point, Louie and Arumo called off the dogs and he really didn't crowd the line of scrimmage again.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_01]: They need that kind of a event.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: Wake up the Atlanta Falcons.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: You know, another thing that you didn't really talk about in this and I've got the Ravens Office of Lyon versus the Falcons front five So we're thinking similarly on both these items The Atlanta defense is is the best in the national football league in terms of stopping the run They've allowed only 47 yards per game all of their defensive interior good tacklers who know what they're doing as run defenders They're less less potent probably as pass rushers
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: But they are Geront Dexter is is also give you a little bit of juice as a past rusher, but the other guys I mean they're they're high quality run defenders and the guys who certainly can give you trouble there.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_01]: I my offensive line versus the fact that it's front five is largely in terms of what I believe will be a lot of five on four opportunities they have to block.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: They don't have super high quality edge rushers.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_01]: So this is a game where our tackles need to really set up up and be guys who can block one on one against the edge rushers.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: So we see Rhiney Stanley do some of his work.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_01]: Even the slow death work is fine, but he needs to be able to keep the hands of the past pressure off the quarterback.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_01]: We need to see Rhiney's and Garth never good game.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_01]: We need to see them get the right 211 matchups on the inside to
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: pick up the defender who's giving them more trouble.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_01]: That might be dexter, might very well be dexter, or they need to be able to pick up stunts and blisters as they come.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: So there will be a little bit of that and Atlanta may or may not really go to numbers in this game.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see how that goes.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_01]: If they go to numbers, then the answer has to not come from those offensive line that really has to come from Doyle in terms of additional scheme to get him outside the pocket.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, Ziria Smith left the game with the concussion, you guys probably know about that.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: Cameron Thomas is still around and he's had a few quarterback hits this year.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_01]: He's never really had a big year in the past.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, his eight quarterback hits he has through four games are already his career high.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_01]: So he's never had a big sack total since most sacks are also quarterback hits.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: They're very short right now on past versus in fact it's a, I think it's a position of critical weakness similar to the offensive line for the Ravens.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: to use that to their advantage and I'm hoping that comes with a with this new playbook that the Doyle has for Huntley in the game.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, if I would anticipate that Atlanta would show pressure if they don't have that many interior past pressures already.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: So I would expect that, especially if they're going to play someone like Huntley, who's always going to try and get the ball out quick
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: What are your thoughts on the Cam Jurgen trade and how that could affect things moving forward?
- 12:28[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, we'll be certainly addressing this extensively on Friday morning GM and by the time this is out, you'll have seen at least a short from me on this particular topic.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: Cam Jurgen's is not going to play.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: I don't believe this week.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_01]: I was informed on this earlier tonight but he apparently is in the concussion protocol currently.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: So, Ogoody for this trade, they're going with the same players, they did the last week with the Iwana at center, and Emery Jones will be the starting right guard again.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_01]: I would pose the question is, will Jurgen's even get the starting role if Yawana has another game like he did last week at center, and he was terrific.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he's the first A of his career, he's way at a schedule in terms of where we expected him to be through four games.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: And if Emery Jones came back and played with at least the physicality and the quality he did in the second half, he wasn't good in the first half.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_01]: F overall for the game, but most of that was just that slug of five plays he played right at the end of the first half.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: That included the sack that got LeMar heard, unfortunately.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_01]: If he could play well as well as he did in the second half where he had several highlights and pancake blocks, then I think it's say,
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's not an obvious question.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's not obvious solution that Cam Jurgen's gets put in this line up.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_01]: If you haven't heard, Cam Jurgen's play terribly this year, just absolutely, or awfully.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: And just much more I have to say about this too much for the matchup show.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't think it's a given, I don't even think it's a given that it'll start, say, the week after, the week after that.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: But I think with the concussion protocol now, I don't think he's going to play it all this week.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: It's a plan anyway.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I bring that up because I think you want it like you mentioned has had a great great state and it's unfortunate because I know they kind of want him to get back to guard, but
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: What's the issue if you found your answer at center?
- 14:18[SPEAKER_01]: Wait, well, Sir, Jurgen's could play poorly at guard this year, I believe.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: So if someone else plays center, if I recall this correctly, I have to look to make sure I'm being correct about that.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: But they part of the problem with his play has been they moved in.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: The question is really, could Emery Jones play a spot?
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: Because I think you want to play either.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think he potentially could be one of the best centers in the league, but the Raven, he's even more valuable at guard to the Ravens.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_01]: And I look at it more like his development.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_01]: We're like what we got out of Marshal Yanda at one point.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_01]: We're Moshi Yanda, I could fill in a left tackle.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry, right tackle when needed.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: And he filled in a left card when needed.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: Just that versatility will have value done in the line at some point and you know could be could be three years from now It could be six years from now that all of a sudden they need to center for another half season say and they know you want I can do it and you know that that that should be really cool To have that versatility and and you be able to pay a little bit extra For him as a guard to have that extra insurance value that you would get a center
- 15:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, definitely agree.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_00]: You want to have definitely blown past expectations after this point.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Fraser, always great talk and football.
