- 1:03starting out, or someone deeply passionate about working with
- 1:07children, you belong here. Hey everyone, and welcome back
- 1:14to the Play Therapy Circle podcast.
- 1:17I'm your host, Kylie Ellison, and I am so glad you are here,
- 1:22you guys. You guys.
- 1:25Oh my God. When I tell you that I have had
- 1:30the most unhinged day probably to date, I'm not joking.
- 1:35And we talk about our tenants of CCPT, about being congruent and
- 1:39often having that authenticity. So I'm going to share with you
- 1:43what my day has been like because I had every intention of
- 1:48recording the podcast probably should have been yesterday.
- 1:52Let's be real, it's Thursday, it's Thursday and it's right now
- 1:55640 PMI should have recorded it early in the morning.
- 2:02Did I stay up last night and watch reality television?
- 2:05Yes, yes I did. Did I then not give myself
- 2:09enough time this morning? Also yes.
- 2:12So I have been this week, you guys, I had this whole episode.
- 2:19I was so excited. I recorded the 1st 10 minutes of
- 2:22it, you guys, based off so much conversation that I've had this
- 2:26week. And I had recorded the 1st 10
- 2:29minutes and then I got a phone call on my hotel phone and they
- 2:34were like, oh, your, your driver is hit like your, you know, like
- 2:38your service to pick you up to take you to the next venue is
- 2:41here. And I was like, Oh my God,
- 2:42they're half an hour early. So I literally had to like pause
- 2:45the podcast and then leave it because the rest of the day has
- 2:49been unhinged. And so I am just now at 640
- 2:54getting a chance to record this. I have not ordered dinner.
- 2:59Let me tell you about my day. OK, so that happened.
- 3:01So they were like half an hour early, so that was fine.
- 3:05So this week let me kind of like bounce around, but like follow
- 3:09along. So this week I am in Victoria.
- 3:12I have only been here a handful of times before, but not to any
- 3:17of the places that I've been so far this week.
- 3:20So it's been so cool to go to all of these different places in
- 3:23Victoria. And for all of my beautiful
- 3:26supervisees who were keen to catch up and were sending me
- 3:29messages, I am so sorry that I have not made it this week to
- 3:33you. It has been such a big week,
- 3:37like way bigger than I thought that it would be.
- 3:41And I have definitely, I'm definitely like on the second
- 3:45last day. Tomorrow is the last day.
- 3:46And then I fly home tomorrow night and I'm just like on the
- 3:50last kind of slide of energy left in me.
- 3:54So it's been huge, a huge week. So I started in Bendigo on
- 3:58Monday. I have been, that was a smaller
- 4:02group. I want to think so far it's
- 4:07pushing up to like 60-70 people I've connected with over the
- 4:11last three days and I've got one more training tomorrow.
- 4:14So it's been a huge cohort of people in a really short amount
- 4:18of time that I've been doing Charles and her play therapy
- 4:20training with. So it's been massive.
- 4:24But Bendigo team were beautiful. Hello to the Bendigo team.
- 4:28Hi, you guys from Monday, you were incredible.
- 4:31Ballarat team represent. You guys on Tuesday were unreal.
- 4:36You were so great. Wednesday was a beautiful
- 4:39reflective group. I loved connecting with everyone
- 4:42in Windham Vale yesterday and then today was travel day.
- 4:46I have made it to Mildura and so tomorrow I'm training in Mildura
- 4:53and then flying home so I haven't met the Mildura crew yet
- 4:57but I'm looking forward to it. I am a Brisbane girl through and
- 5:02through and it's been like 8° here, 10° and it's like 28° at
- 5:08home. So I am not OK, still not OK.
- 5:12So, so I've been doing the training which has been my, my
- 5:17absolute passion. You guys like when I get to
- 5:20share CCPT. It's why I do this podcast
- 5:22because I could talk about child centre play therapy for days.
- 5:25So I love to do it in any kind of, you know, space that I can.
- 5:29So in two weeks time I'm presenting at a conference in
- 5:33Cairns because presenting at conferences is another way to
- 5:36get child centre play therapy out there.
- 5:38So I just do all of the different things, right?
- 5:40So today was supposed to be an easy day.
- 5:43She wasn't guys. She wasn't not even close.
- 5:48So I got to Armadale because I was like, Oh my God, we all have
- 5:53dreams, right? We all have like things in our
- 5:56life that we're just like one day, one day I'll take a trip to
- 6:00Greece, you know, one day I'll, you know, learn how to speak
- 6:05Spanish, you know, like those kind of like big kind of things
- 6:08that you're like, will I do it? I don't, I'm not sure.
- 6:10Maybe I will, maybe I'll work. So the thing for me was the
- 6:14opportunity to go to High Street in Armadale.
- 6:17And I know that's not going to mean much to many people, but if
- 6:20you love kind of clothing and those kinds of things, I've
- 6:23really like become kind of really interested in like
- 6:28putting together outfits and putting together different
- 6:31pieces and like everyone has to have a hobby, right?
- 6:34So I guess this is my hobby. So I was like beyond excited.
- 6:38I was sharing on the socials all day, kind of the adventures of
- 6:42going to High Street. It was beautiful, but it didn't
- 6:47necessarily completely go to plan.
- 6:49So that was fine. And ended up finding a toy store
- 6:54because I'm a play therapist, like, you know, in a high
- 6:57fashion, kind of like, you know, very unique sort of.
- 7:01Yeah. Like there was an Arms of Eve
- 7:03store. Oh my God, you guys.
- 7:04Like there was so many stores where I was like, I actually
- 7:07can't go in here because this is just like, this is my Mecca.
- 7:09Like I'm just so like, overloaded with excitement there
- 7:13in a street like that. As a play therapist, you can bet
- 7:16I will find a toy store. So I did and bought a couple of
- 7:20presents before my kids. I promise, even though they're
- 7:23teenagers, the presents I've got I know they'll love.
- 7:25So like that was a win. That was a win in the day.
- 7:30Then I had just like a bunch of work to do.
- 7:33So I made my way to the airport and I shared on the socials as
- 7:38well. I got myself completely confused
- 7:40and thinking that I was going to a regional airport, not
- 7:43Melbourne Airport, which is obviously big.
- 7:46So like confused myself and my incredible Shaz like has helped
- 7:53me together this week and then I get on the plane and I've got
- 7:58here and I've realised that I packed too much stuff like I
- 8:03did. I just like I packed 2 jackets
- 8:06like I've I've worn one, I've not worn the other one, but it
- 8:09takes up so much room. So I then had to get an Uber to
- 8:14Kmart and buy a suitcase and then get an Uber to get back
- 8:18because I don't have a car because I'm in Mildura.
- 8:20And now I'm here. Oh my God.
- 8:24So thank you for listening to my Ted talk on how to be an
- 8:27unorganised, unhinged 43 year old ADHD person who has no idea
- 8:33what she's doing. But this is a podcast where you
- 8:36weren't necessarily asking for that information.
- 8:38You're here because you want to learn about child centre play
- 8:41therapy. So what I wanted to share with
- 8:43you guys and the the standout message and I'm going to unpack
- 8:46it a lot more in next weeks episode, but the standout
- 8:50message was definitely around. What does the play mean?
- 8:53There was so many reflections and questions and conversations
- 8:57around, but can't I just ask, I'm wondering if you're sad
- 9:02right now. I'm wondering if you want to
- 9:04play right now like these kind of I statements, statements that
- 9:10are coming from the perspective of the practitioner.
- 9:13Lots of those conversations around just really understanding
- 9:16that when we're talking about connecting with kids, success,
- 9:22I, I would argue successfully, it really requires us to unlearn
- 9:28any of those approaches where we ask questions to kids or we talk
- 9:32to kids verbally, which is really hard.
- 9:35It's a very big transition, right?
- 9:37But it's understanding that that prefrontal cortex, that part of
- 9:43the brain that requires children to connect words to their
- 9:46feelings and their experiences is still developing.
- 9:49So it's not, it's not even fully there.
- 9:52It's not fully even online. So you're asking children to
- 9:56answer things that they don't necessarily have an answer to.
- 9:59And so then we often find depending on their background,
- 10:01say high compliance, where they're going to give you
- 10:04potentially the answers that they think you want because they
- 10:06want to keep you happy, etcetera, etcetera.
- 10:08So it was really about so many of those practitioners I've
- 10:12connected with this week, giving them a different perspective to
- 10:15say, talking to adults. It's play for kids.
- 10:20So if we really want to understand and really hear
- 10:24children, we have to stop talking to kids.
- 10:27We have to let them play. And our job as the adults is to
- 10:30understand what they're playing out and to support them through
- 10:34that. Instead of asking questions,
- 10:37giving them suggestions, having games for them to play.
- 10:41Like none of that hits the mark in terms of what children need
- 10:46to communicate. So it really was some very often
- 10:50times challenging conversations around the fact that children
- 10:57are playing every day and communicating to us every day
- 11:01through play. It's just our job to be able to
- 11:04understand and interpret that. So I say all behaviour is
- 11:08communication. I've said that before and I'll
- 11:10say it again. And So what we often find when
- 11:13we're talking about kids with challenging or naughty
- 11:16behaviours is that they have used up every other tool in
- 11:19their toolkit and they've gotten to the point where they're like,
- 11:23I've got nothing else left. This is all I've got is these
- 11:27outbursts, meltdowns, expressions of frustration and
- 11:30anger because no one's listening to me.
- 11:33And so understanding that behaviour is actually them
- 11:35talking to us. So I say to parents, children
- 11:39are discussing in therapy, you know, these things or these
- 11:41issues. They may not have said a single
- 11:43word in the playroom, but they've talked through their
- 11:47play. They've done that and helped me
- 11:49understand immensely what's going on in their world not
- 11:53using a single word. So anyone that is feeling, I
- 11:57guess I don't know, I don't know what message I want to send out
- 12:01in this space today. Because it really was about
- 12:05giving practitioners another lens this week to see children's
- 12:09behaviour as being them trying to tell us a message or
- 12:13communicate to us, as opposed to them trying to be manipulative,
- 12:18trying to be naughty, trying to be disruptive.
- 12:21The other part of the conversations that we've been
- 12:24having this week and especially for folk in Victoria.
- 12:26So if you're a listener in Victoria, you guys are at the
- 12:29epicentre of what we are now seeing in the research of over
- 12:333000 studies now of what we are seeing in the research around
- 12:36what the impact of those COVID lockdowns have had on the mental
- 12:39health of children. So I think giving that
- 12:42information, the feedback that I was getting in the training was
- 12:45that they hadn't heard some of this information before and how
- 12:48grateful they were to hear it. Because I think that there is a
- 12:51strong pathologizing. I'm saying this from my
- 12:54perspective, this is just my opinion.
- 12:56I think there is definitely a high pathologizing of children's
- 12:59behaviours towards diagnosis of ADHD or autism at the moment,
- 13:04rather than looking holistically at all of the factors involved
- 13:07with their presentation, which include for those babies born
- 13:11between 2020 and 2022, the impact of COVID lockdowns.
- 13:15The neuroscience doesn't lie, you guys.
- 13:18The neuroscience MRI studies in the last two years have shown us
- 13:23that babies born during that time had smaller amygdalas,
- 13:27smaller or reduced size of hippocampus and also this white
- 13:32brain matter that they've now identified in the babies born
- 13:37during COVID. So we're not just talking about
- 13:39kids choosing to be naughty or difficult, but we are working
- 13:43with a different population of kids.
- 13:46So I feel like that has been a really rewarding part of doing
- 13:50the training this week of being able to share some of that
- 13:54information, normalise it, but also I guess address the fact
- 13:59that we as an adult population, as a parent population, are also
- 14:03heavily traumatised by everything we went through in
- 14:062020 and 2022. It has now been identified as a
- 14:10mass trauma event, yes, traumatic event.
- 14:14So this isn't just individualised to certain
- 14:16families or certain areas. So we need to as adults be
- 14:20taking care of ourselves, getting psychological support,
- 14:24connecting with our community and really normalising the
- 14:28stress and anxiety that parents are feeling right now because
- 14:31that is all of us collectively. I just spent the beginning of
- 14:35this episode talking about how freaking unhinged my day was.
- 14:39Like that is, if that's not an indicator of all of us just
- 14:43clinging on by thread, I don't know what is.
- 14:46I want to cut this short because this was just a hello.
- 14:50I promise my listeners I haven't forgotten about you.
- 14:53I am so grateful that you guys are still listening.
- 14:58This is episode 41, so 42. Next week I am travelling to
- 15:02Newcastle. I was like what am I doing next
- 15:04week? Oh my God, I'm travelling to
- 15:06Newcastle on Friday to Monday, so fingers crossed I will get
- 15:12the podcast out with that episode talking about really
- 15:15understanding what kids are communicating through play.
- 15:17Not just themes and stages of play, but how do we really
- 15:20understand what it is and why play is the answer in terms of
- 15:25really getting to the heart of their communication?
- 15:28And why it's actually our responsibility as adults to put
- 15:31our stuff aside and actually unlearn some of the things we've
- 15:34maybe been taught previously and learn how to actually hear them
- 15:39because that's that's the gift, right?
- 15:41That's that's what's important. Hey, the other thing I want to
- 15:44say which you know kind of fits with this episode because it's a
- 15:47short 1 today if. You have a.
- 15:49Question that you would like me to answer.
- 15:53We have had our very first listener email question and I
- 15:57was beyond excited. You guys like, I love this.
- 16:00I want to be able to interact with our listeners.
- 16:02So if you have a question for me, I want to do like AQ and a
- 16:06session. And there's no questions off
- 16:08limits. Like send me any question that
- 16:11you would like and I will check in with you to make sure that
- 16:15you're OK with me reading it out in that Q&A episode.
- 16:19But please, please, please email us if you've got a child, send a
- 16:23play therapy question that you would like to get an answer from
- 16:27me as somebody in this podcaster space.
- 16:30I would love to do that. So we're going to put our email
- 16:33address that you can reach us on in the notes of this episode so
- 16:37that you can reach out to us by email and ask the questions.
- 16:42We'd love to hear from you. You know, you guys, you know the

- 17:16look after yourselves and each other.
- 17:17I'm going to order my dinner, Oh my gosh, and do our final, my
- 17:21final day of training tomorrow. I am just so, so grateful.
- 17:24I've just had the best time. I've had the best week, but also
- 17:28I'm buggered so I'm going to go. Thanks so much for listening.
- 17:31Big love to all of you and I will catch you next week either
