Transcript
- 0:00All right, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon
- 0:02getting on Monday underway on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:05Trent Condon and Kendall are for the next couple of hours talking
- 0:09sports with you. Thanks for starting here with
- 0:11us. A busy program.
- 0:13Here's what's coming up on our guest list here today in about
- 0:1625 minutes. Our friend Scott Doctorman from
- 0:18the Athletic, he will join us. He won't be here next week.
- 0:21Big 10 meetings in LA, so Doc will be covering those in a
- 0:25couple of weeks. We'll have plenty to recap with
- 0:27him. We've got a lot to do today with
- 0:29Doc as the one of his babies that he's been working on the
- 0:34last couple of weeks published finally the survey amongst Big
- 0:3710 fans. We'll talk about that with Doc.
- 0:39Sounds as though Notre Dame and USC seemingly trying to jump
- 0:43start those talks again to bring that series back.
- 0:46But a lot of conversation on college football and on the Big
- 0:4910 with Scott Dockerman coming up at 12:25.
- 0:52Joe O'Donnell Game 4 tonight ABS up to one in their series.
- 0:57Joe will join us at 12:45 to preview game #4 stand alone NHL
- 1:02game tonight, 7:00 puck drop there.
- 1:05Our number 2 Matt Snyder and his spot talks MLB baseball with us.
- 1:10You know what, if you're going to have replay, just get the
- 1:12damn thing right. Did you see the Cubs game
- 1:14yesterday at all? I did not know Mother's Day.
- 1:16Oh yeah, you're a little busy. I get it.
- 1:18I get it. You know later.
- 1:21But Matt Snyder will talk MLB, baseball, I look forward to that
- 1:25segment each and every week. And then Bill Seals on Iowa
- 1:28State recruiting moves, etcetera, with with football,
- 1:32with basketball. Bill Seals coming up at 1:30.
- 1:34Trent will make some picks at about 1:50 or so.
- 1:37Circa sports sponsor those. By the way, if you have, if
- 1:40you've been listening, you can your chance to win a trip
- 1:44experience circa the Miller and Condon way.
- 1:48And that will be going out there, part of our 25th
- 1:51anniversary of cakes and no silver anniversary.
- 1:53Go to cakesandno.com for more details.
- 1:55But somebody going to win a hell of a package, five others are
- 1:58going to win. Really a nice trip, but the
- 2:00grand prize is is really, really good.
- 2:02We're going to be out there second week in August, right?
- 2:05The week of the fair that starts on Friday.
- 2:08We'll be there to begin that. Week, yes, we'll be there going
- 2:11out there Sunday evening. There's a evening flight that
- 2:14goes out a direct to from a legion going out on the 9th and
- 2:17we'll be back on Wednesday, August 12th.
- 2:20And we talked about the little workaround.
- 2:22Look, if you win the contest, that's great, but they have the
- 2:25all in package right now and you can schedule.
- 2:28So get your trip set up, go out there when we're going to be out
- 2:31there. If you win, you can cancel, You
- 2:32can move your Vegas trip maybe to another time or use that
- 2:35flight to go somewhere else. Get everything set up
- 2:37beforehand. And then if you win, hey, you're
- 2:40working even better. You're going to have a great
- 2:41opportunity out at Circa. Going to be so much fun.
- 2:44Looking over the package is unbelievable.
- 2:46It really is it really? Is it's $400.00 two nights and
- 2:50you get $100 beverage credit and $100 food credit.
- 2:54Keep going. Day bed and it's I think there's
- 2:57something else in there too. Well, no resort fees.
- 2:59And no resort fees? Absolutely no.
- 3:01Taxes, resort fees, That's a pretty good deal.
- 3:03Yes. Absolutely, because they will
- 3:05kill you at most of the properties, not kill you, but
- 3:07they're it adds up very quickly to say the very least.
- 3:11All right, fun weekend, fun weekend in sports.
- 3:13I do want to just real quick, I don't want to harp on it because
- 3:16every team gets bad calls, but when you go to replay, you'd
- 3:19expect it to be done properly, right?
- 3:21And what I'm referring to, Degron, was unbelievable
- 3:24yesterday. Tyon was just not made, not just
- 3:26as good, but he pitched really well.
- 3:28But Jacob Degron looked like, you know, the best pitcher in
- 3:31baseball. Again, it's a tight game.
- 3:33It's 00. There's a play at the plate.
- 3:37They gave the the home plate umpire ruled the baserunner
- 3:39safe. 1 Nothing. Ranger Council Gosium put the
- 3:42headphones on. Need to take a look at this one.
- 3:45The replay clearly shows the tag being administered at home
- 3:50plate. Everybody saw it.
- 3:52That was watching the game. Rangers fans saw it.
- 3:54Cubs fans saw it. Baseball saw it.
- 3:57The group that was monitoring in New York, they didn't see it.
- 4:00It's not a different way. Is there other?
- 4:02Way to see it. There's no other way to see it.
- 4:04There's nothing. Nothing.
- 4:05He's out. There is no way that you could
- 4:07say well Nope because of this. You can see one shot that makes
- 4:12it look close. You go to the you go to the
- 4:14play, the shot from kind of where the the dugout, he's
- 4:17clearly out. But if you're going to use
- 4:21replay, use it properly, get it right, and if it would have been
- 4:24the Rangers that got screwed out of it in the same way, just get
- 4:26it right anyways. I'm watching the player right
- 4:29now, OK? I see it in real time.
- 4:31All right. See.
- 4:32OK, maybe he slid underneath it. All right, here's Council.
- 4:35He's the ear signal. There it is.
- 4:38Slides. He is safe.
- 4:41Yeah. Keep going.
- 4:44Safe. Which which one are you looking?
- 4:46At I'm watching the replay from over top.
- 4:48Now he's up by a mile. You're the only one that's got
- 4:51him safe so far. Well, not you.
- 4:52You and the guys in New York. Oh yeah, now he's out.
- 4:54Yeah, now he's. Out.
- 4:55I've seen the slow download, yeah, he's out a little bit more
- 4:57behind the play. He's up by a foot.
- 4:59The over top it looks like he's safe, absolutely, but they show
- 5:03they do have other angles. Though you would think, and
- 5:05maybe they got busy at the time, but regardless, it's one game.
- 5:08It's 1 of $1.62. It was a hell of a baseball game
- 5:11yesterday. Let's talk about the NBA because
- 5:13that's the story that's kind of reverberating here today.
- 5:17I don't know how you can make a case for women, Yana, that he
- 5:20got screwed. I mean, I really don't.
- 5:22That's as egregious, as egregious as you know what?
- 5:25Your height is an advantage in the game.
- 5:27Don't use that as a disadvantage.
- 5:28I had no other choice. I'm a tall person.
- 5:31You got him right in the chops. Nas Reed, I mean, he got him.
- 5:34Trent, there's going to be no further discipline.
- 5:37He's going to play tomorrow night.
- 5:38I think that's a great, I think it's a great move.
- 5:40Are you surprised by that though?
- 5:41Kind of, yes, But you know what? It kind of goes back on if this
- 5:44would have been late in the game.
- 5:46OK, maybe it was early, it was early in the game, but should
- 5:50that matter? Well.
- 5:51I don't think it should if it is something that is.
- 5:55There's a guy who's room for the Timberwolves.
- 5:56I'm on your side. That is deemed necessary to
- 6:00eject him. It doesn't matter if it's in the
- 6:01first quarter or the fourth quarter, ejectable and then you
- 6:04go back and look at it. I'm glad that they made the
- 6:06decision quickly. You did not want something that
- 6:09was going to linger throughout all today and into tomorrow.
- 6:12And will he won't. Yeah, He had to make the
- 6:14decision quickly, but there's prior precedent and we've seen
- 6:17this in. Playoffs there have been.
- 6:18Where guys throw elbows very similar.
- 6:21Run our test. Now run.
- 6:23Our test had. You can background.
- 6:25A few extra. Layers.
- 6:26Yeah, he's got a rap sheet. Yes, when Benyana, this is
- 6:29strike one. Yes.
- 6:30He's never been ejected before in a game.
- 6:32This is not something that happens often with him, but it's
- 6:37pretty egregious. Yeah.
- 6:38And and I think they're now setting precedent another way.
- 6:41Is this star treatment? Yes, I I don't think there's any
- 6:45doubt if this was even anybody. Stefan Castle.
- 6:50Yeah, he's Castle, right? I I think that he's probably not
- 6:54in there and the T wolves needed wouldn't be not out of.
- 6:57There, they had to win the basketball game.
- 6:59You're not winning. No, you're not.
- 7:01They had to win it last night and when he went out, the
- 7:05pathway cleared a little bit. But look, give the Spurs credit.
- 7:07They fought tooth and nail in that game.
- 7:09They did. That was a good basketball game.
- 7:11Now, I don't think the T Wolves are going to ultimately prevail
- 7:14in this series. The point spread was 9 1/2 prior
- 7:19to the announcement. Did you do you let me look and
- 7:22see if it did it move it all knowing that he is going to play
- 7:26or was that already baked in? So I saw it at 10 1/2 last
- 7:30night. It's 10 1/2.
- 7:31Yeah, the only It's 10 at the Super book.
- 7:33It's 10 1/2 everywhere. So it was 10 1/2 the.
- 7:36Opening. So it was already baked in that
- 7:38he's probably not going to miss any time.
- 7:40Yeah. Because that thing dwindles to
- 7:42what, 7 1/2 if he's not in there?
- 7:43Yeah, I would think. Probably in that range.
- 7:46I do wonder if there was a few people that were jumping on
- 7:48board maybe when you saw the 9 1/2 number not knowing at that
- 7:52time if there was going to happen.
- 7:53Let's just grab this 10 1/2 just in case he's out of there and
- 7:56have that in your back pocket going into it still with one
- 7:59banana if they're different team and them at home, but.
- 8:02The ability to go take the ball to the basket, yes.
- 8:05I mean, he's not standing in your way.
- 8:07The toughness though, this T Wolves team, they're just,
- 8:10they're junkyard dogs. I like them.
- 8:11This is a tough, tough group. That physicality and then the
- 8:14fourth quarter for me, when he put the team on his back,
- 8:16unbelievable until the final minute again, they can't get the
- 8:20ball in, I know, and then they have to Chuck it all the way the
- 8:22other end of the floor. The craziest part about that, I
- 8:25don't think was the deflection off of Desumu's leg and bounced
- 8:30right back up into him so he could catch the ball.
- 8:33How they allowed the Spurs to allow that pass to get there.
- 8:36What are you doing defensively? I I understand you think they're
- 8:40going to try to throw it towards the half court line.
- 8:42They have to get it over half court because it was going to be
- 8:44an 8 second violation still to make that pass a that's a scary
- 8:48pass by McDaniels. That's full marks.
- 8:51You're going into the corner there and if that thing is
- 8:53turned over, they get it on the plus side of the court and it
- 8:56just it was falling apart very quickly there.
- 8:58But even before that and assume we're just getting absolutely
- 9:00mugged. What did he finish?
- 9:02Maybe I sound like a a fan a little bit.
- 9:04Get him to the free throw line though.
- 9:05And that's why he kept taking the inbound is because he's the
- 9:08best free throw. Shooter 3 for three yesterday.
- 9:10Didn't shoot enough of them, but he made everyone they made of
- 9:12the shot rather. That was kind of a crazy thing
- 9:14too, is seeing they put up the numbers, the graphic, just how
- 9:17few free throws he takes. I think for a guy that handles
- 9:21the ball because yeah, and he. Takes it to the.
- 9:23He takes it to the basket. He's not a Spotify.
- 9:25No, he's not a guy. This isn't.
- 9:27He can, but Devin Ballwinkle for the Hawkeyes that never had a 2
- 9:31pointer for a full season, That's not what we're talking
- 9:33about here. It's wild.
- 9:34Yeah, this guy puts his head down and actually gets in there.
- 9:36Just that was the thing that because what like 38 to 41 or
- 9:39something like that is what? Big number I.
- 9:41Was like, that's it. That's all he's taken here
- 9:44recently. But when he takes him, he makes.
- 9:45Him. Yes, he does.
- 9:46And they got the right guy. They got the victory back to
- 9:49Game 5. Can the team will still win it?
- 9:51I just don't have that feeling. I don't.
- 9:53Think, I don't think it goes seven games.
- 9:55I think they lose the next two. The next two I do.
- 9:57They're a different team. When Weymignon is such a weapon,
- 10:00Such a weapon, how about the Knicks?
- 10:01By the way, oh boy. Are they going to give whoever
- 10:04comes out of the West? And I still think it's OK CI do
- 10:08because of Holmgren. Oh.
- 10:09Yeah, I mean, it's all of them. It is will they give.
- 10:13If it is Nick's Thunder, will there be any drama?
- 10:17We did forget that and I don't think anybody thought that was
- 10:20going no. No, no, no.
- 10:22Outside of Halliburton fans or Pacer fans, there was a very
- 10:26small percentage of people that actually believed that that was
- 10:28going to happen. The Knicks are just cruising.
- 10:30I mean, look back in their two losses.
- 10:32They're one point affairs against the Hawks.
- 10:34That's it. They're bludgeoning teams.
- 10:36So they beat Detroit or Cleveland?
- 10:38I think so. I do too.
- 10:40I think Detroit maybe gives them more problems and Detroit
- 10:42obviously have homecourt advantage that go along with
- 10:45them, but they are just absolutely murdering people and
- 10:48the domination, you know, we're waiting for that gentleman's
- 10:50affair, one of these two games in Philly.
- 10:53No, no shot. Just no shot at all.
- 10:55And what did they hit the first quarter?
- 10:56Were they 9 of 11 from three in the first quarter?
- 10:58I don't. Know I don't remember.
- 11:00It was something ridiculous like that.
- 11:02It's game over at that point. I mean, you look up and all of a
- 11:04sudden it's a 20 point game after the first quarter.
- 11:06There's no slowing down for this Knicks team.
- 11:08I hope so. So do you give the Lakers a
- 11:10chance tonight, then back back to that theory about winning
- 11:12one? No, I think they're going to get
- 11:14clubbed. I think it's over.
- 11:16I think they see the writing on the wall on top of it.
- 11:18This is the. Only reason that and let me pour
- 11:21that. Yeah, yeah, let me pour that,
- 11:22OK. The only reason I think the
- 11:25Lakers will win and I'm and I'm, you know, I'm, I'm going on down
- 11:29the road here. Is LeBron really going to play
- 11:32the final game in his career on prime if this is truly.
- 11:36It for him. Right.
- 11:38You're going to end up on a streaming service, not on NBC or
- 11:43not on ESPN. You're going to go out on a.com.
- 11:49I don't know. We that that would be the only
- 11:52reason that I'd be at least tempted to take OKC tonight.
- 11:57Tempted to take OKC because I don't think Lebron's going to
- 12:01lose on prime. So you, you mean take the
- 12:03Lakers, take the Lakers. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:05Take the Lakers, because it's not going to end.
- 12:07It's just not going to end. I hope so.
- 12:09I like watching LeBron. He's.
- 12:11How old now? 41 and his birthday.
- 12:14I think he's a Christmas baby. Or maybe I'm thinking I I don't
- 12:18know who I'm thinking of. Possibly.
- 12:20But but he'll be 42 obviously next year.
- 12:23That's what happens, you know, 4142.
- 12:25A good call. December 30th, Thursday.
- 12:28I thought he was. And no, I take the Lakers.
- 12:32Taking the. Lakers and I I'm not the points.
- 12:34What's what's what's the money line price?
- 12:37Oh, you're going to get a good one, right?
- 12:38Yeah, I'll take a peek. Here.
- 12:39All right, let's get Thunder Joe in here.
- 12:41All right, here's your hat back. Thank you.
- 12:44Hello, Joe, How are you? Can you zip it buddy?
- 12:49You're not buying this for a second, huh, Thunder Joe?
- 12:52No, no, because the only way the Lakers will ever win this a game
- 12:55in this series is they've got to figure out a way to not get
- 12:58their asses blown out in the third.
- 13:00And they have no answer for guys like McCain, Caruso and Wallace.
- 13:06You can double you can you can double Shay all the time you
- 13:09want, but it opens up them guys. And you talk about Chet Hogan.
- 13:13Keep in mind this Thunder team is doing this without Jalen
- 13:16Williams. Yeah, no, they're, they're good.
- 13:19They're gifted to, you know what?
- 13:20I love watching. I'm getting into SGA more now.
- 13:26The histrionics, the filing, etcetera.
- 13:29He's such a good player and I think his reputation maybe
- 13:32prevents people from kind of embracing the way he plays the
- 13:36game. He's just, he's so.
- 13:37Gifted and he will sign every autograph.
- 13:41I like him leaves leaves the stadium because he would be he
- 13:44would growing up in Canada, he would try to go to games in
- 13:46Toronto to watch Kobe and he always made it a point to always
- 13:50Shay's always made it a point to play every Rd. game possible
- 13:53because he goes there might be kids there to see me.
- 13:55He went to see Kobe play and Kobe actually stopped that game
- 13:58that he would see Kobe clay. So he's vowed to never do it.
- 14:01But real quick. I want to weigh in on it Wendy
- 14:02real fast what Wendy did. Now I'm not saying the T wolves
- 14:05will win, but I'm going to give you hope, Trent.
- 14:07Wendy put the Spurs in a must win because I you keep you want
- 14:14you had a chance to go up at home 3 to 1.
- 14:17Now it's 22 T Wolves are not playing with house money.
- 14:20Yeah, yeah. Fairpoint Joe, thanks for the
- 14:24call, man. Appreciate it.
- 14:25Good luck to your team. Next game.
- 14:26I want to see the Lakers win a game.
- 14:28Let's let's get the gentleman one, Yes, I mean give them 1A
- 14:31gentleman. Sweep and what is the what is
- 14:32the money line price did you find?
- 14:34It I did so you can get right now you can get it on DraftKings
- 14:38A + 390. You can get it at Caesar's plus
- 14:414:30. You can get it at bed GM plus
- 14:44450. Keep going, you.
- 14:45Can get it at Circa plus 470. Where are you shopping for your
- 14:48prices? You know, trying to think it'll
- 14:50be circa, yes, absolutely. Like I don't know but I'm just
- 14:53trying to. You're willing to send to
- 14:55existence. Yes.
- 14:58I I did watch a more a little more hockey than I this weekend.
- 15:02Well, watch pretty much all of the Wild and the land.
- 15:04Yep, on Saturday night, got back for my brother's birthday party
- 15:07and my parents are. You're watching hockey, huh?
- 15:11We're flipping back and forth between that and the Lakers.
- 15:13But yeah, the Wild looked like a different team.
- 15:17They did. They did.
- 15:18Yep, give them credit. It was so surprising after
- 15:21seeing those first two games and you mentioned the speed
- 15:23component, kind of that's what I was watching for Minnesota.
- 15:27It wasn't just that they looked to be the faster team.
- 15:30Well, Quinn Hughes was unbelievable.
- 15:32Colorado couldn't do anything. No, there were from the second,
- 15:35third period on. How many real opportunities did
- 15:39they have? And when they were there, the
- 15:42Wall of Saint Paul. How does that happen?
- 15:44Is it a confidence that you got to must be here?
- 15:46It must be and and he said he said so in his post game that
- 15:51that he knew he had to be better.
- 15:52His confidence was good. I'm paraphrasing, but and he
- 15:55needs it again tonight. Look, they you got to get you've
- 15:59got to get out of town with this series Tutu to have any chance.
- 16:04And I still think Colorado, I hate to admit it because I I
- 16:08picked the Wild. I think Colorado's the better
- 16:11hockey team. I do.
- 16:12I'll tell you one team that's really caught my attention in
- 16:14this playoff run, the Montreal Canadiens, man, they are
- 16:18unbelievable. And I'm so glad that some of the
- 16:20national media is starting. McAfee just did a big, big piece
- 16:23on it is an experience like none other seeing a hockey game up
- 16:28there. It's an absolute religion and
- 16:31they do it so well and they're so passionate.
- 16:35I don't. I don't have 1 ticket on them.
- 16:37You don't. I don't have a single nickel on
- 16:38them. So that's a scary.
- 16:40Win, yeah. If they win, I'm out.
- 16:42If Anaheim wins, I'm out. Anyways, we'll see where it
- 16:46goes, but I still think it's the ABS.
- 16:48But a big, big spot tonight. Joe O'Donnell coming up at 12:45
- 16:51to pre game preview rather game #4 Scott Dockerman coming up on
- 16:56the other side will get inside his survey at the The Athletic.
- 17:01We will do that. How about baseball from over the
- 17:03weekend? Speaking to The Athletic in
- 17:05baseball. Did you see her Twins guy?
- 17:06I did Aaron Gleeman who used to have on from time to time and
- 17:11and finally he told me he just doesn't like doing.
- 17:12Radio. Is that what it is?
- 17:13Yeah, he'll go into K fan and actually like, do them in
- 17:16person, but it's just he's a different guy.
- 17:18Yeah, I always enjoyed his writing.
- 17:21I listen to his podcast every week with him and the geek and
- 17:25Gleeman and the geek is the name of it.
- 17:26So that's my. And it's all on the twins.
- 17:28Yes, yeah, they just talk about the twins.
- 17:30But he is a guy that just wants to write about the twins.
- 17:34And the athletics said we don't want to need anybody anymore.
- 17:37Well, they still have Dan Hayes, and instead of having two guys,
- 17:41they wanted him to become a Wild.
- 17:43Have two guys. Right.
- 17:44And wonder how much longer that's going to be.
- 17:46Well, it is the state of hockey, not the state of baseball.
- 17:48That's right. I do wonder with The Athletic
- 17:52because Scott Doctorman, who's going to join us, went from the
- 17:54Hawkeye guy to a Big 10 and FL draft and everything else that
- 17:58he does. So there's a lot more is the
- 18:01athletic. I don't want to say they're in
- 18:03trouble. I don't think that's well.
- 18:04They're blocked by the New York Times, so I think they should be
- 18:06OK. I don't know that though.
- 18:08Right, Yeah, the finances, New York Times and they might look
- 18:10at it as lost leader, I don't know.
- 18:12But well, don't. Now I don't read the Times.
- 18:17I wish it was Rides with My Door like every newspaper.
- 18:19I would read it, but it doesn't. None of them do.
- 18:23But now that isn't the sports section.
- 18:25All the athletic at the at the I.
- 18:28Believe they still do have. Writers.
- 18:29Do they? Yes, that New York Times still
- 18:31has sports. Writers.
- 18:32I believe so. They just taught you some of the
- 18:34features or something. Is that part of it?
- 18:35Yes, because every time I log into The Athletic, I get a
- 18:38commercial for New York Times, right?
- 18:39Yeah. Because that's who owns now The
- 18:42Athletic. But what made The Athletic great
- 18:44for me is I could find articles on the Bears, the Hawkeyes and
- 18:49when that and the twins and when that starts to dwindle.
- 18:51Going further, how difficult is it to breathe about the Winnipeg
- 18:54Jets, right, Yeah, and I get that.
- 18:55And you get that, right? But what if that goes away?
- 18:59Yeah. And you start to go away from
- 19:02the team aspect that I think for a lot of us athletic subscribers
- 19:06got us in there. In the 1st place because that's
- 19:08how they started. Yes, absolutely.
- 19:10And that's that's the excitement behind it.
- 19:12And though I'm not a Cubs fan, I read a ton of Cubs articles and
- 19:15and the different teams that we follow a little bit more, not a
- 19:19little more broadly than we do kind of the the nuts and bolts
- 19:23of Iowa and Iowa State stuff. You had that opportunity and
- 19:26with that possibly going away, I don't know, it just different
- 19:30than what I certainly was hoping the Athletic was going to
- 19:33continue to be. All right, Speaking of the
- 19:34Athletic, Scott Dockerman joins us.
- 19:36He's next. It's 1225.
- 19:38Before we go to break. It's 1220.
- 19:40Doc will join us at 12:25. Our keywords continue on.

- 20:08O'Donnell still to come this hour, it's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 20:11Network. All right, 1225.
- 20:17Miller and Condon welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 20:21Scott Dockerman momentarily Joe O'Donnell voice to the Minnesota
- 20:24Wild in about 20 minutes. Let's get our buddy Scott
- 20:29Dockerman in here from the Athletic.
- 20:31Want to recap the survey that Big 10 fans responded to Little
- 20:35other news. But Doc, I just good to talk to
- 20:37you. Thank you as always for doing
- 20:38this for our audience. Next week, I know you're going
- 20:41to be out in LA. Big 10 meetings are will be
- 20:44going underway. Just kind of looking ahead, Doc,
- 20:47do you anticipate these? Will there be anything?
- 20:50I don't want to say earth shattering come of it, but what
- 20:52do you think might be what are the bigger stories, if any, to
- 20:56come out of these meetings next week?
- 20:59I think when it comes to the Big 10, it's going to be, you know
- 21:02what, what are they thinking about the expanded playoffs and,
- 21:08and not just Tony Petiti and, and the staff, but also the
- 21:13football coaches and 80s, you know, what's kind of their
- 21:15charge? What are they, what are they
- 21:18pointing towards? I think that's right now kind of
- 21:20at the forefront. I mean, we're a week away.
- 21:23The ACC meetings are going on now later in the month.
- 21:26You've got the the Big 12 and the, and the FCC.
- 21:30And so my guess is playoff is, is #1 as far as the topic goes.
- 21:35But, you know, sometimes things like this, you go in with
- 21:39thinking one thing. And, you know, I'll never forget
- 21:42when I was into Kansas City in 2010 that, you know, in the
- 21:46middle of the meetings was when the PAC 16 almost came about.
- 21:50And that changed the whole dynamic of late spring meetings.
- 21:54So I, I don't anticipate that happening this year, but I do
- 21:58think, you know, you got to be guarded for something you don't
- 22:02really expect. You have been busy at the
- 22:05Athletic curating and going through.
- 22:07How many responses did you get for your article asking fans of
- 22:11Big 10 schools a bunch of different questions?
- 22:13How many responses in this article you've been working
- 22:15through? There's about 3600 and they're
- 22:20from every school and and then there were some that weren't a
- 22:24fan of a school in the Big 10 also had comments.
- 22:28So it was it was interesting that that was the main reason
- 22:31why I split it up into two stories.
- 22:33One kind of a big 10 fans. I, I suppose that, you know,
- 22:38that they, their thoughts on the league and then two was their
- 22:41thoughts on their individual schools.
- 22:43And we had poles and, and, and also, you know, they shared
- 22:48their thoughts. And I thought it was, you know,
- 22:50one of the better responses I've received as far as these kind of
- 22:54polls, because I think everybody was pretty honest in the way
- 22:57they felt about not only the league but but their teams.
- 23:01And they're fairly self aware, which you never get on social.
- 23:04Media isn't that the truth? You know, a couple of things,
- 23:07Doc, that that I was surprised at a, the fact that the College
- 23:12Football Playoff, the number that the majority want by clear
- 23:15majority was 16 coming in second was 12.
- 23:19But the 24 teams just did not move the needle.
- 23:22And then they on the the other one that kind of surprised me
- 23:24was the big 10 championship game.
- 23:28It doesn't sound like that is a is something that the fans are
- 23:32really into. And I was surprised by both of
- 23:34those Doc. Yeah, I was a little, I was more
- 23:38so, you know, the the championship game, it's
- 23:42interesting with the Big 10 because of the major
- 23:45conferences, it's it's still the newest.
- 23:48It only came about in 2011 and and all those years between East
- 23:53and West that just never really never really caught on because
- 23:57the the West was always the junior partner and and there
- 24:00were some good games. You know, we have, we've seen
- 24:03some really good games over the last three or four or five
- 24:05years. It was really, you know, there's
- 24:07really discrepancy between among the teams.
- 24:11So I think, you know, it didn't quite catch on as much.
- 24:14And so, yeah, I was a little surprised that, you know, 8,
- 24:17more than 80% seem to be OK with eliminating the, the, the
- 24:21championship game. I mean, half of them were in
- 24:23case if everybody else did, they'd be fine with it.
- 24:25And then 31% were just like, sure, get rid of it.
- 24:29And then, you know, the playoffs.
- 24:31And then this to me is more of a kind of a problem that Tony
- 24:35Petiti has, which is conveying his voice and and being able to
- 24:39speak out because I think if he was to come out and he's going
- 24:43to talk next week, allegedly. So we'll, we'll keep our eyes on
- 24:46that. But but for him to, you know, if
- 24:51he was able to sell it publicly, I think people would embrace it
- 24:55more. But right now they're left with
- 24:58that's too many. We went from 4:00 to 12:00.
- 25:00We're going to probably go to 16.
- 25:02But man, 24 just sounds like too many.
- 25:04If he was able to come out and explain what that meant, I think
- 25:08he'd be, you know, the, there would be more people, not
- 25:10everybody, but more people would be OK with it.
- 25:13But until he does that and allows everybody else to kind of
- 25:16do it too, I think that's, you know, right now, that's why
- 25:19you're seeing such a low percentage of people buying into
- 25:22the 2014 playoff. One thing that jumped out and
- 25:25hearing and talking with you throughout the years is the
- 25:28question, how confident are you in Big 10 leadership, which I
- 25:32think was a little bit more positive than I thought it was
- 25:34going to be. I've been in lockstep with a lot
- 25:37of the things that you have said in the past, Doc, about Tony
- 25:39Batiti, not really at the forefront of things.
- 25:42He is not APR guy. He certainly not like Greg
- 25:44Sankey and the way that he is very visible with the SEC.
- 25:47Your thoughts on the response that you got in just your
- 25:50thoughts overall and Petiti and what he has done as a
- 25:52commissioner of the Big 10? Yeah, you're seeing kind of a,
- 25:56you know it 2. Two things do not add up here. 1
- 26:00is the fans seem to be behind the Big 10 leadership and I
- 26:04think that's more to their schools or the league's overall
- 26:09success on the field or in the court or whatever, which is why
- 26:14that people on a scale of 1 to 5, five being the best that you
- 26:18know who you had, you know more almost 80% had anywhere from A3
- 26:24to A5. And and I think again, that most
- 26:27people like their athletic directors on campus.
- 26:31I think that was pretty evident and I think they like the
- 26:34direction that the Big 10 is going in a competitive sense.
- 26:37However, when it came to Tony Petiti, I went through obviously
- 26:42every comment and it was, it took me a long time, but there
- 26:46were 69 comments that mentioned either Petiti or the
- 26:50commissioner. Only two were positive and five
- 26:54were what I consider neutral. The rest were pretty negative
- 26:58and they're universal from a lot of different spots.
- 27:01I mean, Michigan and Ohio State were the most pointed.
- 27:05Michigan State and Iowa were also there.
- 27:08And, you know, there were a couple of there were some areas
- 27:12where he has to make up some ground and of course, the
- 27:16playoff is one of them. He has to explain his position
- 27:19and do it in a better fashion than he has the outside
- 27:22investment slash private equity. People are just not comfortable
- 27:26with that. And he's got to make sure to,
- 27:28you know, mention why this is important for the league.
- 27:33And and then, you know, you also the the other thing that really
- 27:37came about was the Michigan people hate him for how he, you
- 27:40know, his suspension of Jim Harbaugh during the season when
- 27:43they won the national title and everybody else hates him because
- 27:46of Michigan. So he's doing some right.
- 27:51Yeah, so everybody hates them because of Michigan one way or
- 27:54the other. That's why that's kind of funny.
- 27:56Yeah, they make a good talk show host gives it one bad fan base
- 28:00hates you and the others feel the same way.
- 28:01You're doing the right thing. A couple of things that stuck
- 28:03out to me, Doc, when you mentioned that other article
- 28:06more team centric. There's a few teams, the teams,
- 28:09a few teams where fans have absolutely no hope that their
- 28:12team is ever going to get through the the one team,
- 28:15though, that jumped out that seemingly if this isn't a wake
- 28:19up call for our friends in Madison, I don't know what it is
- 28:22because Wisconsin to me was always like, you know, one of
- 28:25that very next tier, right? They might be a cut below, but
- 28:29this is a really good program. And, you know, every now and
- 28:33then they're going to pop up, put a good team out on the field
- 28:35and they can't contend. Well, their fan base doesn't
- 28:38think so, Doc. And if you've lost the fan
- 28:39bases, you know, 2, they I think not two in the survey was, you
- 28:43know, 1/5 was yeah, it's going to happen.
- 28:45We're going to win a championship in five years.
- 28:47One obviously no shot. But the Wisconsin fans who's
- 28:51generally piled on, we have no hope.
- 28:54That should be a wake up call for the administration in my
- 28:56opinion. They've got some issues in
- 28:59Madison and it starts at the very, very top because they need
- 29:03what, a president for the overseas, the entire system.
- 29:06They need a chancellor on campus, they need an athletic
- 29:09director and you've got a coach that, you know, had the the vote
- 29:15of confidence at the end of last year by the old athletic
- 29:18director who the only reason why, I mean, if if he was a
- 29:21different AD, he probably would have fired him.
- 29:24And, and so you've got all those issues that kind of compounded
- 29:27there at Madison. They've, they've got a long way
- 29:31to go. And, and the way and, and among
- 29:34the comments, you know, and I only listed 3 per team, which
- 29:38really, well, you know, meant there was a lot on the cutting
- 29:40room floor. I mean, they were all pretty
- 29:42universal that and it wasn't just like straight up negative,
- 29:46like we suck. You know, it was, I mean, very
- 29:49nuanced. And there was and I, I think
- 29:52right now that they are, you know, there were a few that
- 29:55still remain with Luke fickle, but by and large, they're,
- 29:59they're just, they can't believe how fast they fall in.
- 30:03For me to think about 5 or 6 years ago that this was still
- 30:06considered one of the better programs in the country to now
- 30:09being, you know, among the the worst teams in the Big 10 and
- 30:13without much hope, that's quite a drop.
- 30:17Yeah, quite damning. Yes, absolutely.
- 30:19In a program we're just not used to.
- 30:21Well, to go back to the 80s and they were awful back then before
- 30:23Barry Alvarez got there. One comment that you had there
- 30:26on the local front with Iowa and Tim, I thought said it well, for
- 30:30a lot of people, I hear this all the time.
- 30:32I'm sure you do as well. Doc Ference is a blessing and a
- 30:35curse. You love the sustainability year
- 30:37after year. You know you're going to be
- 30:38competent, but looking for that next level.
- 30:40Now, we've heard about next levels going back to Steve
- 30:42Alford and they went to the next level.
- 30:44It was just a level down from where they were previously.
- 30:47He didn't mean it that. Way.
- 30:48I don't think so at all. That was not what he was
- 30:50shooting for. That's not what shooting for
- 30:52either. When you go through the Iowa
- 30:54responses, is that a sentiment that you heard a lot of?
- 30:58Happy about the consistency but still wanting more.
- 31:02There Iowa had mostly happiness, I think more so than I can
- 31:08remember. And we know that we've seen this
- 31:11over and over and over again. But I think the majority, almost
- 31:14all of the fans, probably at least 75% of them were happy
- 31:19with where Iowa is as a program because it's since NIL has been
- 31:24infused into the program and and college football, it's navigated
- 31:30it very well. It's had some success.
- 31:32It's it's one and a minimum of eight games every year, you
- 31:35know, if not 9 or 10. And since the NIL took place in
- 31:392021 and, you know, like the way Ference has been able to conduct
- 31:44business, you know, I think there is that sentiment, though,
- 31:47that it is somewhat of a double edged sword.
- 31:49But by and large, I think Iowa fans were, I would say, feel
- 31:55better about the program than they generally have.
- 31:57And and that's that's saying something now.
- 32:00You know, some people put them down for that, you know, that,
- 32:03you know, hey, you're satisfied with mediocrity or what have
- 32:06you. I don't, I don't, I would can
- 32:07consider Iowa mediocre by any stretch.
- 32:09I mean mediocre to me is in that, you know, you never have
- 32:13more than eight wins a year. You know, when Iowa has gotten,
- 32:17you know, a couple of division titles and last year they were
- 32:19very, very close to being really good or having a good record.
- 32:22They were a good team. So by and large, I think the
- 32:25Iowa fans felt were much happier than say, Nebraska, Wisconsin
- 32:32and you know, and and begin this that most people were very self
- 32:36aware in this poll and Iowa fans were right there that they seem
- 32:41to be, you know, pretty not complacent, but but excited for
- 32:44what happens in Iowa City. Scott Dockerman from the
- 32:48Athletic doc Great stuff. I'll get you out of here on
- 32:50this. I just saw the University of
- 32:52Iowa. The basketball Twitter account
- 32:53just made it official. Ben McCollum has been extended
- 32:55now. No surprise they've been working
- 32:57on it for a while. Just your thoughts talk on
- 33:00McCollum and his meteoric rise as far, you know, coming from
- 33:03Drake. And we're not sure it's Drake
- 33:05how they going to the popularity that he's attained when I guess
- 33:09you take a team to the lead 8 comes with it, right?
- 33:11But just Ben McCollum and how he's seen amongst Hawkeye fans,
- 33:15if he were to do that poll, guessing pretty, pretty positive
- 33:17and they'd be pretty happy in that poll as well.
- 33:21You should be. I mean, you know, this is a
- 33:23program that had kind of languished even in the regular
- 33:27season for the last handful of years under Fran McCaffrey.
- 33:30I mean, they maybe they got to the tournament a few years ago,
- 33:33but they weren't going to do anything in it.
- 33:34And they didn't. And he was able to to get Iowa
- 33:38winning games in March, which is really the only thing that
- 33:41matters when it comes to college basketball.
- 33:43And he did it. And he did it in a way that I
- 33:46think is probably better served for the University of Iowa.
- 33:49I mean, Fran's offenses were very interesting to watch.
- 33:52They were fun, but they were never going to win anything of
- 33:55note because they couldn't well enough.
- 33:57Well that that's the flip. And and you've seen that good
- 34:01enough offense and you've seen very, very good defense, which
- 34:04and I think the better more players he get that fit his
- 34:07system. I think you see that.
- 34:08But but I think it it speaks to an investment that Iowa wants to
- 34:12make in its basketball program and sports in general, And it's
- 34:15going to which is they've got a lot of riding on it.
- 34:18They don't want to lose him. They want to keep him and and to
- 34:21do that is to be at the forefront of it.
- 34:24You know, he had a great season. You don't want another team to
- 34:27to look at him. You don't want him to even kind
- 34:29of a wandering eye. So they did that preemptively.
- 34:34And I think it was a smart move in this case.
- 34:36And you know, Ben McCollum, I, I dare say he knows the state much
- 34:41better than his predecessor did and all of his time there.
- 34:44And I, I think there's some good days ahead for Iowa basketball.
- 34:47What that means, I don't know. But I think he's going to get
- 34:49Guy on a lot of important games over his tenure.
- 34:53Have fun in Lai know he'd be working, but we'll continue to
- 34:56follow what you're doing out there and look forward to your
- 34:58recapping, etcetera of the meetings next week in Los
- 35:01Angeles. Doc, thanks for jumping on.
- 35:03We sure appreciate it. We'll talk to you in a couple of
- 35:05weeks if your schedule allows. Thank you, Scott Dockerman.
- 35:08Thanks for having me, appreciate you.
- 35:09Good to talk to you, Scott Dockerman from The Athletic.
- 35:11What do you anticipate? I think it's playoff.
- 35:13I think I think Doc's. Right.
- 35:14Yeah, and figuring out what they want to do, they Petiti has been
- 35:19pretty steadfast in the automatic bids.
- 35:21Do the coaches want that? That's something that you're
- 35:23going to have to change. Are you going to have to change
- 35:25the way that the calendar looks and go back to what it was prior
- 35:29to 25 years ago? Rivalry week is the week before
- 35:32Thanksgiving. Then you have the weekend for
- 35:36your matchups. It was that way for a long time,
- 35:39no? I know, is that less football?
- 35:41Nope. OK, that works then.
- 35:43More, better football. OK, Yeah, I could see that
- 35:47because, yeah, the final week would be pretty fun.
- 35:50We'll talk hockey next on the other side.
- 35:51Well, it's usually pretty fun, but it might take up another
- 35:54notch. Joe O'Donnell, voice of the
- 35:56Minnesota Wild, joins us next. Matt Snyder talks baseball to
- 35:59kick off our number two Bill Seals on Iowa State, Miller and
- 36:02Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 36:04Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 36:07Final segment, the first hour of our program.
- 36:09Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com, Major League Baseball writer
- 36:13kicks off our number two Bill Seals on Iowa State.
- 36:16To north we go. Let's head to the well, Saint
- 36:19Paul, the Wild and the AV7-O clock puck drop tonight.
- 36:23Joe O'Donnell, the radio voice of those Minnesota Wild, he
- 36:27joins us. Joe 21 series on certainly had a
- 36:30different feeling. I'm guessing walking out of
- 36:33there fans may be a little nervous going into the game, but
- 36:37they were in full throat very early and and off the Wild went
- 36:40to a convincing win and it's 21 now in the series.
- 36:44Much different field today, Kenny.
- 36:46I can tell you that the Wild got to their game.
- 36:50They did so rather quickly in game three on Saturday night and
- 36:54it was much needed. I don't think they but they were
- 36:58pretty honest about not playing their style very much in games
- 37:01one and two in Denver and we saw the results.
- 37:05You let Colorado have open ice and try to trade scoring chances
- 37:09with them. It can be a long night.
- 37:10So the Wild bended well in game three.
- 37:13I thought they pressure it all up and down the ice.
- 37:15I really thought everybody up and down the lineup had a good
- 37:18game. They got some strong goal
- 37:19setting, some timely goals on the power play.
- 37:21And yeah, to your point, it was a rather complete win in the
- 37:24first loss for the Avalanche and the playoffs now six and one
- 37:29won't be easy tonight, but that's sort of the blueprint for
- 37:31the Wild, and that's why they had such success in the opening
- 37:33ground against Ellis Stars with that same brand of hockey.
- 37:36Wellstead, obviously better, but it was the defense for me that
- 37:40definitely changed and there just weren't a whole lot of
- 37:42opportunities I thought for Colorado overall.
- 37:44So when you go back to the goaltender after what happened
- 37:46to game one, the benching in Game 2, is it a mindset?
- 37:50Is it something they found? Maybe?
- 37:52I don't know. Technically wise, I know nothing
- 37:54about this sports. You got to help me out here.
- 37:56How can Walstad look like that in game one and then this in
- 37:59game 3? Yeah, it's the guys in front of
- 38:02them. I think I saw that Colorado had
- 38:0514 rush chances in game one against the Wild alone, and
- 38:10that's like one of those, you know, I think it was Sport
- 38:13Logic, one of the analytical sites in the entire series
- 38:16against Dallas, the Wild rollout 25 right, So six games against
- 38:21the stars, 25 rush chances against where the team has
- 38:24possession over the blue line with numbers and you know, good
- 38:27speed. Like I'm pretty sure that's how
- 38:29they, you know, derive a rush chance and there were 14 that
- 38:33they gave up in the first game against the avalanche.
- 38:34You can't survive playing the ABS that way.
- 38:37Everybody knows that. It just took Minnesota a bit to
- 38:39get into this series and to get to that defensive game.
- 38:43We saw it in Game 3 and it just starts with their puck pressure
- 38:46up ice. Trent, like if the Wilder in on
- 38:48the four check making the Avalan defends, spending time in the
- 38:52offensive building. Colorado doesn't have the
- 38:54ability to exit cleanly, get speed, hit those checkup plays,
- 38:57those cut UPS when they cross over the blue line and find the
- 39:00trailer. And then all of a sudden your
- 39:01defense is scrambling and there's rebounds and that's the
- 39:04game Colorado wants to play. They didn't get to it in game
- 39:07three. Gives a wild credit.
- 39:08They were physical. They skated well and Ball said
- 39:11does what he does well, which is find shots through traffic and
- 39:14settle things down. I want to bring up Vladimir
- 39:17Tarasenko because I'm not saying I thought he was.
- 39:20He's clearly on the downside of his career, but he's certainly
- 39:23been much better in these playoffs.
- 39:24I think Tarasenko has been maybe one of the unheralded members of
- 39:28this kind of unsung members of this playoff run for Minnesota.
- 39:32How about that? Yeah, I, I look, I knew he was
- 39:36going to score at least one big goal in this playoffs, no matter
- 39:39how long the Wild played with the first round or kept on
- 39:42going. That's just his MO.
- 39:44He's always done it. I think now he's like 51 career
- 39:47Stanley Cup Playoff goals. He's been there, he's done that.
- 39:51This is the fourth time he's playing against the Avalanche in
- 39:53a playoff series. It just kind of shows you how
- 39:56long he's been around, how many deep runs he's been a part of.
- 39:59He's not going to while you with his speed at this point his
- 40:01career, he's not going to be a play driver as sort of that
- 40:04flashy term that a lot of folks use now about guys that kind of
- 40:07carry a line. But he's a shooter.
- 40:10He's good defensively. John Heinz is always lauded that
- 40:13about the veteran Terasenko. This year, even when he wasn't
- 40:16scoring offensively, he's like, you don't have to worry about
- 40:18him from defensive. Side, he's not cheating the game
- 40:20looking for offense so brings a lot of experience.
- 40:23He brings a calming presence. I feel like to that wild locker
- 40:26room and and in clutch moments, he tends to deliver.
- 40:31So we jump into the other side Speaking of goalies from
- 40:34Walstead, and there's a change in game three.
- 40:38I think people will remember he gave up six in the first game.
- 40:41Do you think that there's going to be a change after pulling
- 40:43Wedgewood and they they go the other route here for Colorado in
- 40:46Game 4? Yeah, I think Jared Bednar just
- 40:50chatted with the local media. The Wild had their morning skate
- 40:53at the practice rink at 10:30. The ABS went on at 11:30 at the
- 40:57game rink, Grand Casino Arena. So I was kind of checking, but
- 41:01their scribes had to say on Twitter.
- 41:04And the last time I saw it looked like Blackwood was in
- 41:07what they call the starter's crease, like the net that
- 41:10typically the starting goalie would would warm up in in the
- 41:13morning skate. So if that's the case, and yes,
- 41:16it looks like Black would be getting his first start of the
- 41:19playoffs. Look, the ABS used both guys
- 41:21throughout the year. They won the Jennings Trophy for
- 41:24the fewest goals allowed in the NHL.
- 41:26And that's an award split between whoever plays for you,
- 41:29which would be Scott Wedgewood and McKenzie Blackwood for
- 41:32Colorado. So they're very comfortable with
- 41:34whoever they put in there. I found it interesting that
- 41:37after Game 2 or game three rather, Jared Bednar said he he
- 41:41thought Wedgewood really was competing in that, but maybe
- 41:43like a little bit too much like he was out of position at times.
- 41:47He was over committing. He was sort of swimming back
- 41:49there. He lost his goal stick on the
- 41:51four on three power play gold end up in the corner again,
- 41:54Jared Bednar sort of eluded. He thought maybe his goalie was
- 41:57maybe a little too ramped up. I'm paraphrasing, but like just
- 42:00a little out of position because of how aggressive he was and how
- 42:03how much he was competing back there.
- 42:06So we'll see if Blackwood, you know, gives them a little bit of
- 42:08change of pace. The Wild did score 6 game, one
- 42:11against Wedgewood. To your point, Trent, they got,
- 42:14you know, 3 past them, you know, the other night.
- 42:17So we'll see. I mean, Blackwood had a good
- 42:20year. So to Wedgewood again.
- 42:21That's why they gave up the fewest goals in the league.
- 42:23Last thing, seemed like Quinn Hughes had a little bit more ice
- 42:25to deal with on Saturday night. Yeah, look, when when Caprice
- 42:30off and Hughes are carrying the play for the Wild, there's good
- 42:34steam as anyone in the league, like when they work the way they
- 42:37did the other night collectively up and down the line up with the
- 42:39power plays going. This is why this team had up,
- 42:42you know, 104 regular season points.
- 42:44Hughes is so dynamic. He can back off the defense when
- 42:47he's shooting the puck, always feel he's a much bigger threat
- 42:50than when he's always trying to dish it.
- 42:52Like he can get shots through. And I'd love to see him shoot
- 42:55the puck more here tonight in Game 4.
- 42:57But a bolding Caprice and Hughes and Faber on their game, you
- 43:00know it's going to be a star driven series.
- 43:03And the Wild like their depth bottom 6.
- 43:05Trent and Kenny just to like to win those battles too.
- 43:08So if their stars are going and cancel out the F stars and you
- 43:11get your bottom 6 going as well. I just think Minnesota really
- 43:14liked your chance. This could be a tough one.
- 43:16They've gotten the Avalanche collective attention.
- 43:18I can guarantee you that. This one tonight should be fun.
- 43:22No, no question about it. Joe Donnell, voice of the
- 43:24Minnesota Wild, joining US radio duties tonight.
- 43:27Joe Donnell, thanks, fan. Appreciate it as always.
- 43:29We'll talk to you as this thing goes on.
- 43:31Appreciate it, Joe. Thank you all.
- 43:33Right. See you guys.
- 43:33Yep, good to talk to you Joe O'Donnell, the radio voice of
- 43:36the Minnesota Wild. Game 4 tonight should be a good
- 43:39one. Hopefully it is 22 going back to
- 43:42Denver for game five. I'm in.
- 43:44Can we get some good ones? I mean, Anaheim Vegas has been
- 43:48close. It has, yeah, Yeah.
- 43:49Carolina's already moved out there.
- 43:52Ticket punched. I was shocked by.
- 43:54This I I saw this little nugget today.
- 43:57You're the last team that a last time a team in the NHL playoffs
- 44:00has won their first eight games. Well, if Carolina just did, but
- 44:04prior to that, I have no idea you.
- 44:07Have to go back to 1985. Really.
- 44:10The 85 Oilers. In fact, there are only 5 teams,
- 44:14including this year's Carolina team, that have ever won their
- 44:17first eight games in the playoffs. 85 Oilers, the 69
- 44:20Blues, the 60 Canadians and the 52 Red Wings. 69 Blues again,
- 44:25then got swept in the Stanley Cup Final by the Boston Bruins
- 44:29and Bobby Orr flew through the air.
- 44:31That one. Indeed, in Saint Louis, Oh,
- 44:35absolutely. Hour 2 coming up next, Matt
- 44:37Snyder, CBSSports.com covers MLB.
- 44:40That's where we'll start. Bill Seals on Iowa State, Miller
- 44:44and Condon on Des Moines Sports Station One O 6.3 KXNO.
