- 0:00I know that God has brought me here for a time such as this.
- 0:04Sometimes circumstances we wouldn't choose take us to where
- 0:08God needs us to be. It's one of those little signs
- 0:11that God is working behind the scenes.
- 0:14God is not explicitly present, but he's unmistakably present.
- 0:18And I think that's how God often works in our lives as well,
- 0:21quietly behind the scenes. Even if all the odds are stacked
- 0:26against you, you still play an important role in bringing about
- 0:30God's purposes for Jews. The book of Esther is a favorite
- 0:39book in the Hebrew Bible. Each year there's a special
- 0:42Jewish festival called Purim. In some cities are fun parades
- 0:46on the streets, in synagogue. The entire book of Esther is
- 0:49read out loud. Not once, but twice.
- 0:52I remember attending Purim at a synagogue in Jerusalem when we
- 0:55lived there. It was so fun.
- 0:56People dressed up in costumes. Everyone cheered for the heroes.
- 0:59They booed for the villains. But the Book of Esther is more
- 1:02than a fun holiday story. It has the power to change our
- 1:06lives. So let's dive into it.
- 1:08If we look at a big picture of the Old Testament overview, the
- 1:11book of Esther takes place during the Persian period after
- 1:15the Babylonian exile. So remember, after Babylon
- 1:18destroyed Jerusalem, the Jewish people experienced decades of
- 1:22captivity. Eventually Persia defeats
- 1:25Babylon and their leader Cyrus gave the Jews permission to
- 1:29return to Jerusalem. And we read about this return
- 1:31back in the books of Ezra in Nehemiah, which described the
- 1:35rebuilding of the temple, the rebuilding of the walls around
- 1:37Jerusalem. Here's an approximate timeline
- 1:40of what's happening in the Persian period.
- 1:42And Esther fits about in the middle of this historical
- 1:46period. But their story is a different
- 1:48part of the story. Ezra and Nehemiah are exiles who
- 1:51return to Jerusalem. But scholars estimate that many
- 1:55of the Jews did not return to Jerusalem.
- 1:58They stayed where they were. Esther is one of these Jews who
- 2:02scattered throughout the Persian Empire.
- 2:05These Jews are often referred to as Diaspora Jews from the word
- 2:08dispersion describing the Jews who lived outside of the land of
- 2:12Israel. So in Esther chapter one verse
- 2:14one we read now it came to pass in the days of Ahazuaris.
- 2:19Now Hazuaris is the name of the Persian king in Hebrew.
- 2:23Other translations will use the Greek name of the king.
- 2:26For example, we read in the New International Version.
- 2:29This is what happened during the time of Xerxes, the Xerxes who
- 2:32ruled over 127 provinces. It's talking about the same
- 2:36person, just using a different form of the name.
- 2:39So today I'll be using Xerxes, mostly because it's easier to
- 2:42pronounce than a Hasueris. Now, I should say at the outset
- 2:46that scholars debate whether the king in Esther is Xerxes,
- 2:49another Persian king, or simply a literary figure.
- 2:53But as we see in the book of Esther, Xerxes is an individual
- 2:56who likes to party. In the 1st chapter, he has a
- 2:58party that lasts 180 days. What would you do after a party
- 3:03that lasts that long? You'd have an after party, of
- 3:06course, and that's what Xerxes does.
- 3:08We read. By the King's command, each
- 3:10guest was allowed to drink with no restrictions, for the king
- 3:13instructed all the wine stewards to serve each man what he
- 3:17wished. While Xerxes is having his
- 3:19party, Vashti is having her own party with some of the women.
- 3:23At one point Xerxes gets drunk and he asks Vashti to come out
- 3:26and show herself to all of his friends so they can admire her
- 3:29beauty. Vashti refuses and Xerxes gets
- 3:32mad, so he asks his advisers what he should do.
- 3:36They said Queen Vashti has done wrong not only against the king,
- 3:39but also against all the nobles and the people of all the
- 3:42provinces of King Xerxes. This very day, the Persian and
- 3:46Median women of the nobility who have heard about the Queen's
- 3:49conduct will respond to all the King's nobles in the same way.
- 3:53There will be no end of disrespect and discord.
- 3:57Now when I read this, I don't know whether to laugh or to cry.
- 3:59I'll probably cry because Xerxes will throw away his whole
- 4:03marriage because his ego is so small.
- 4:05He can't handle Vashti saying no to him.
- 4:07Sebastian is kicked out of being queen.
- 4:09Time passes and now Xerxes is lonely again.
- 4:13The King's advisory Others have a suggestion.
- 4:15They say let a search be made for beautiful young virgins for
- 4:19the king. Let the king appoint
- 4:20commissioners in every province of his realm to bring all these
- 4:24beautiful young women into the harem at the citadel of Sousa.
- 4:28Let beauty treatments be given to them.
- 4:30Then let the young woman who pleases the king be queen
- 4:34instead of Ashti. So this is when we are
- 4:36introduced to Mordecai and his cousin Esther.
- 4:40Mordecai adopted Esther when her parents died and raised her as
- 4:44his own daughter. The scriptures describe Esther
- 4:47like this. Esther had a lovely figure and
- 4:49was beautiful. Now, for some reason, when I was
- 4:52growing up, the idea that I had in my mind was that Mordecai
- 4:55told Esther to go try out for this beauty pageant.
- 4:59We might say, but that's actually not what the scriptures
- 5:02teach. Look carefully, we read When the
- 5:05King's order and edict had been proclaimed, many young women
- 5:09were brought to the citadel of Susa.
- 5:11Esther also was taken to the King's palace.
- 5:15Note that there's no mention of Mordecai suggesting that Esther
- 5:18sign up, and the Hebrew word that's used for brought or taken
- 5:22here has the connotation of being seized.
- 5:25This could imply that the King's officers essentially rounded up
- 5:28beautiful young women by decree. It might not have been an event
- 5:32that you could RSVP know to. So think about the implications
- 5:37this has for Esther. As a young woman, she's brought
- 5:41into a place she didn't choose. It's a reminder sometimes
- 5:46circumstances we wouldn't choose take us to where God needs us to
- 5:51be. Mordecai was deeply concerned
- 5:54for Esther. We read Esther had not revealed
- 5:56her nationality and family background because Mordecai had
- 5:59forbidden her to do so. Every day he walked back and
- 6:01forth near the courtyard of the harem to find out how Esther was
- 6:05and what was happening to her. The result of the competition
- 6:08was that the king was attracted to Esther more than to any of
- 6:11the other women and she won his favor and approval, so he set a
- 6:15royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Ashti.
- 6:20Now about this time 2 of Xerxes officials had a plot to
- 6:23assassinate him. We read Mordecai found out about
- 6:26the plot and told Queen Esther, who in turn reported it to the
- 6:30king, giving credit to Mordecai. And when the report was
- 6:33investigated and found to be true, the two officials were
- 6:36impaled on poles. All this was recorded in the
- 6:39Book of the Annals in the presence of the king.
- 6:43Now in chapter 3, we're introduced to the villain of the
- 6:45story, Haman. He is a descendant of Agag.
- 6:49Now we might have to pull our memories back a little bit, but
- 6:51if you remember back in First Samuel Chapter 7, Agag was the
- 6:56king of the Amalekites, one of Saul's chief enemies.
- 6:59We're also told that Mordecai is from the tribe of Benjamin, the
- 7:04same tribe that Saul was from. So can you feel the narrative
- 7:09tension brewing? Saul was supposed to kill Agag,
- 7:12but he didn't, and now Agag's descendant Haman is causing
- 7:16trouble for the Jews. Haman had recently been given a
- 7:19position of prominence by King Xerxes.
- 7:22We read all the royal officials at the King's gate knelt down
- 7:25and paid honor to Haman, for the king had commanded this
- 7:28concerning him, but Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him
- 7:31honor. When Heyman saw that Mordecai
- 7:34would not kneel down or pay him honor, he was enraged.
- 7:36Yet having learned who Mordecai's people were, he
- 7:39scorned the idea of killing only Mordecai.
- 7:41Instead, Heyman looked for a way to destroy all Mordecai's
- 7:45people, the Jews throughout the whole Kingdom of Xerxes.
- 7:48It's crazy, right? One man insults you, and you
- 7:51decide to kill his entire people.
- 7:53So Heyman cast a lot to determine which month he would
- 7:57slay the Jews. We read in the 12th year of King
- 7:59Xerxes, in the first month, the month of Nissan the poor, that
- 8:04is, the lot with cast in the presence of Haman to select a
- 8:09day and month. And the lot fell on the 12th
- 8:13month. So notice that by chance, on the
- 8:16first month, the lot falls on the 12th month.
- 8:19This gives Mordecai and Esther time to act.
- 8:21If the lot had fallen on the second month, there would have
- 8:24been no time. It's one of those little signs
- 8:27that God is working behind the scenes.
- 8:30So Haman says to the king, There's a certain people
- 8:33dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your
- 8:36Kingdom who keep themselves separate.
- 8:37Their customs are different from those of all other people, and
- 8:41they do not obey the King's laws.
- 8:43It is not in the King's best interest to tolerate them.
- 8:47If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy
- 8:51them. So the king agrees and signs a
- 8:53royal decree. The text is specific that
- 8:56dispatches were sent by couriers to all the King's provinces with
- 9:00in order to destroy, kill, and annihilate all the Jews, young
- 9:04and old, women and children, on a single day, the 13th day of
- 9:09the 12th month. When Mordecai learned of all
- 9:12that have been done, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and
- 9:15ashes, and went out into the city, wailing loudly and
- 9:18bitterly. In every province to which the
- 9:21edict and order of the king came, there was great mourning
- 9:23among the Jews, with fasting, weeping, and wailing.
- 9:27When Esther learned about Mordecai, she was in great
- 9:29distress. She sent clothes for him to put
- 9:31on instead of his sackcloth, but he would not accept them.
- 9:34Then Esther summoned Hatak, one of the King's eunuchs assigned
- 9:38to attend her, and ordered him to find out what was troubling
- 9:42Mordecai and why. So Mordecai explains the whole
- 9:46situation to Hatak and told him to tell Esther to beg the king
- 9:50to have mercy on the Jews. Esther responded to Mordecai,
- 9:53saying all the King's officials and the people of the royal
- 9:56provinces know that for any man or woman who approaches the king
- 10:00in the inner court without being summoned, the king has but one
- 10:03law that they be put to death unless the king extends the gold
- 10:08scepter to them and spares their lives.
- 10:11But 30 days have passed since I was called to go to the king.
- 10:15This was the original version of don't call me, I'll call you
- 10:19right so you can understand Esther's concern.
- 10:22Mordecai's response to Esther is powerful.
- 10:26He says do not think that because you are in the King's
- 10:29house, you alone of all the Jews will escape.
- 10:31For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for
- 10:35the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's
- 10:38family will perish. Note how Mordecai has complete
- 10:41faith that the Jews will be delivered.
- 10:43He doesn't say, Esther, you're our only hope.
- 10:46Instead, he expresses his confidence that one way or
- 10:49another, deliverance will come. And that is an important message
- 10:53for each of us. Deliverance may or may not come
- 10:56today and may or may not come in this life, but through Jesus
- 11:00Christ, ultimate deliverance will come.
- 11:03And then Mordecai utters what might be the most famous words
- 11:06in the book of Esther. He says, Who knoweth whether
- 11:09thou art come to the Kingdom for a time such as this.
- 11:14Remember, Esther was brought to the palace.
- 11:17She was an orphan. She was a descendant of those
- 11:20who'd been in exile. She was a foreigner in her
- 11:23society. She was the weakest of the week.
- 11:25And I wonder if Esther's just been doing her best one day at a
- 11:28time. And now Mordecai comes to her
- 11:30and says, you've been called to the Kingdom for a time such as
- 11:32this. And Esther says, I didn't ask to
- 11:35be here at this time. I love what President Thomas S
- 11:38Monson taught. There have always been
- 11:40challenges in the world. Many of those which you face are
- 11:43unique to this time, but you are some of our Heavenly Father's
- 11:46strongest children, and He has saved you to come to the earth
- 11:50for such a time as this. With His help, you will have the
- 11:55courage to face whatever comes. Esther shows us that God uses
- 12:00different people in different ways, and in this moment God is
- 12:04using the girl who never planned on being there in the first
- 12:08place. Just think about that.
- 12:10God is using the person who never planned on being there.
- 12:15You could be right now or in the future, the person with a
- 12:17calling you had never planned on or a challenge that you never
- 12:21wanted. You might say, I didn't ask for
- 12:23any of this. Maybe Esther felt the same way,
- 12:27and maybe Mordecai response, God has brought you here for a
- 12:30reason. I hope that sometime today each
- 12:33one of us will look in the mirror and say to ourselves, I
- 12:36know that God has brought me here.
- 12:38For a time such as this. Consider these questions.
- 12:42Reflecting back on your life, can you see a time where God put
- 12:46you right where you were needed so that you could bless others
- 12:49bringing it to the present? Where in your life right now do
- 12:53you feel like you've been brought into a situation you
- 12:55didn't choose, but that this could be your time such as this?
- 13:00We don't have to have a Kingdom changing experiences in order to
- 13:03answer these questions. I think of my oldest son, Levi.
- 13:06He was called to serve in the Georgia Atlanta N Mission and he
- 13:10spent most of his mission serving in metro Atlanta.
- 13:14But there was a time when he was called to a small rural town and
- 13:18one day he was knocking doors in this small rural town and a
- 13:21woman let him and his companion enter the house.
- 13:24And then who should come into the room but his 9th grade
- 13:28wrestling coach from Orem, UT. Somehow this 9th grade wrestling
- 13:33coach from Orem, UT was in this small town in rural Georgia, and
- 13:38he and his wife, who were members of the church, were
- 13:40having maybe a time in their lives when they needed to have
- 13:43some strengthening of their faith.
- 13:45And who better to come into their lives at that moment than
- 13:48a 9th grade wrestling student who knew but what my son was
- 13:52called to the Kingdom for a time such as that.
- 13:56I want to open it up if any of you have a story that you'd like
- 13:59to share from your life that connects with either of these
- 14:02two questions. We moved here to Utah about two
- 14:05years ago and I got here. I thought, oh, I cannot do this.
- 14:09And I was about to tell my husband to pull the house off
- 14:12the market while I was out here. And I went to church and someone
- 14:16giving the talk had reported that they went to a area
- 14:19conference and what they heard was that the Lord was bringing
- 14:24people here for a reason. And the Spirit testified to me
- 14:28that we needed to come here for a reason.
- 14:30I'm not sure what that reason is still, but we have been very
- 14:33blessed to be here and hopefully I can fit in here just fine.
- 14:37Thank you. So when we are studying in Utah
- 14:41and suddenly we got we need to go back to India to renew our
- 14:45visa. That time our family very
- 14:47disappointed during the middle of the masters.
- 14:49Why I need to go back to India for visa work?
- 14:52But God plan is wonderful in our lives.
- 14:54When we went back and we started to teach in institute class and
- 14:57also as a call, through callings we show the light of Christ in
- 15:01our Saints and through teachings of our testimony, our family
- 15:05members are baptized. So it's a great blessing for us
- 15:09to go back to India. Wow.
- 15:11So God brought you to India just for the right time.
- 15:13Yes, thank you. I was exiting the temple the
- 15:17other day and I stopped at the desk for just a moment and spoke
- 15:21with a friend and then turned to leave.
- 15:23And as I turned to leave a sister came real close to me.
- 15:27So I put my arm out just automatically and kind of hugged
- 15:30her and we exited the door together.
- 15:32And then she turned to me and she said, I feel drawn to you.
- 15:36You just gave me the hug that I've been longing for from my
- 15:40mother. And I held her in my arm for a
- 15:42minute and didn't understand completely what was happening,
- 15:46but knew there was a sacred event happening in that moment.
- 15:50And then we exited and she just didn't want to let go.
- 15:54And neither did I really touched me.
- 15:57It's so beautiful and it's a reminder that the time such as
- 16:00this doesn't have to be saving an entire nation.
- 16:03It could be reaching out to one person.
- 16:06Thank you for those stories. So God has a work for each of us
- 16:10to do, and he had to work for Esther as well.
- 16:13In response to Mordecai, Esther said go gather together all the
- 16:18Jews who are in the city and fast for me.
- 16:20Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day.
- 16:23I and my attendants will fast as you do.
- 16:26When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is
- 16:29against the law, and then note her powerful phrase she said.
- 16:34And if I perish, I perish. Esther's words point to a
- 16:38powerful principle of surrender. Surrender is when you completely
- 16:43set aside your will and exclusively focus on gods.
- 16:47It's when you honestly believe. I am not the author of my story.
- 16:51I'm the servant of the author. Put differently, we might see
- 16:55that surrender is when you let God prevail in your life.
- 16:59Esther's If I Perish, I Perish is a powerful example of
- 17:03surrender, and it reminds me of an account we looked at earlier
- 17:07with Joshua. You remember the story?
- 17:09After crossing the Jordan, the Israelites advanced toward
- 17:11Jericho, and as Joshua approached the city, Joshua
- 17:15looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn
- 17:18sword. Joshua asked.
- 17:19Are you for us or for our enemies?
- 17:22And the response was unexpected. Neither.
- 17:24But as commander of the army of the Lord, I have now come.
- 17:27We then read. Joshua fell face down to the
- 17:30ground in reverence. Something really powerful is
- 17:33happening here, right? Joshua opens up with a question.
- 17:36Are you on my side in heaven? Answers wrong question.
- 17:40This isn't about God signing up for Joshua's campaign.
- 17:43It's about Joshua signing up for God's.
- 17:46That's why Joshua falls face down to the ground in reverence.
- 17:50In this moment, Joshua pivots from I'm in charge to I'm your
- 17:54servant. We might say Joshua changes from
- 17:56God be for me to God, I'm for you.
- 18:00That's surrender. When we come to God in prayer,
- 18:02do we go with a list of all the things that we need from him?
- 18:06That's God be for me. Or do we we completely submit to
- 18:10our Father in heaven. You see, Esther and Joshua, they
- 18:12faced different situations, but ultimately it's the same
- 18:16question. Is God here for me or am I here
- 18:20for God? I think the concept of surrender
- 18:22is so powerful and I want to share 2 modern examples.
- 18:26First, let's look at a story told from President Oakes who
- 18:28was writing about his great great grandmother Hannah.
- 18:31He said in 1877, Hannah and her husband Orange were happily
- 18:37established in Mount Pleasant, UT, where Orange was serving as
- 18:40a Bishop and where their industry had earned them what
- 18:43Hannah later described as the finest home in Mount Pleasant.
- 18:47Then Brigham Young called for leaders to go E over the
- 18:49mountains to colonize what is now Emory County, at that time
- 18:53barren and unpromising. Obediently, Orange and a
- 18:56pioneering party set forth over the mountain in October 1877.
- 19:01Two years later, Orange moved Hannah and their seven children,
- 19:05then ages 1 to 16, constructing their own Wagon Rd.
- 19:09As they struggled up the deep Canyon.
- 19:12Now we read about this and we can just glide past that.
- 19:14Another great story of pioneers. But seriously, stop and think
- 19:17about Hannah. She's a real person, a young
- 19:20mother with seven children ages 1 to 16.
- 19:24Can you imagine her life bushwhacking through a
- 19:28wilderness, sleeping on a dirt floor in A1 Room House when she
- 19:32used to have the best home in the town?
- 19:35Continuing with President Oakes, he says many years later, toward
- 19:39the end of her long life, Hannah wrote, The first time I ever
- 19:44swore was when we landed here. I said damn, a man that would
- 19:51fetch a woman to such a God forsaken country.
- 19:56Don't get mad at me, I'm just quoting.
- 19:59Now know what President Oakes says next.
- 20:02Some may wonder why I find those words so faith promoting.
- 20:06They speak to me of a great great grandmother who did not
- 20:10deny her very mortal emotions but nevertheless went forward in
- 20:15obedience to do what she was called to do.
- 20:19That's surrender. And think of the impact.
- 20:23Hannah's surrender directly changed the life of President
- 20:26Oates, which means her surrender has changed your life.
- 20:31When we surrender, even in small ways, there are huge ripple
- 20:35effects, both for us and for later generations.
- 20:39This next story comes from Jonathan Rumi, the actor who
- 20:41plays Jesus in The Chosen at a university graduation.
- 20:46He shared the story, which takes place before the Chosen ever
- 20:50began. Jonathan says May 12th, 2018 was
- 20:53a Saturday. On that day, God remade me a
- 20:56completely new creature in Christ.
- 20:59Here's how I had 20 bucks in my pocket -80 in my checking
- 21:03account, drowning in thousands of dollars of debt, enough food
- 21:06to last one day, zero opportunities, and not a single
- 21:10Chick-fil-A coupon. I dropped to my knees and I
- 21:13poured myself out to the Lord and surrendered everything to
- 21:17Him, saying I can't do this without you.
- 21:19So whatever you will for me, I will accept it.
- 21:22Even if it means quitting acting, leaving the arts,
- 21:25Whatever it is, I I surrender. And for the first time, I
- 21:29actually meant it. The weight lifted off me
- 21:32immediately. It wasn't on me anymore.
- 21:34I didn't have to worry about it. My circumstances were no
- 21:38different. I was still broke, but my
- 21:40disposition and my heart for Christ completely changed.
- 21:44I entrusted everything to Him. So I went and spent that last 20
- 21:48bucks on a killer brunch and I simply waited.
- 21:52I came home a couple of hours later.
- 21:54I opened my mailbox just out of habit, and there sat in front of
- 21:57my face, 4 mysterious checks. I went into my apartment,
- 22:02dumbfounded, set up my phone and recorded myself opening them so
- 22:06I'd have proof later that it wasn't imagining this.
- 22:10Now it's powerful. You can see the actual footage
- 22:13of this event from May 12th, 2018.
- 22:16Let's take a look. 50 bucks as I thought.
- 22:19Thank you. Thank you.
- 22:28God, $200. Another 50 bucks.
- 22:41It's $800. I love seeing this miracle
- 22:46unfold in real time. Continuing, Jonathan says.
- 22:50I started my day -80 bucks. By the end of opening those
- 22:54checks, I had 1100. It may as well have been
- 22:57$1,000,000 at that point. God is listening, you just have
- 23:01to completely trust him and surrender unconditionally.
- 23:04It's the hardest thing that I've ever done but the greatest thing
- 23:07that has ever happened to me and will be the most life changing
- 23:10thing to ever happen to you if you allow it.
- 23:13I found that surrender leads to salvation in every way possible.
- 23:18Yourself. Reliance won't cure you, your
- 23:20willpower won't save you, but in your complete surrender to God,
- 23:24you will always succeed because Jesus was, is, and ever shall be
- 23:30enough. Now sometimes surrender is a big
- 23:33thing, like Jonathan's experience deciding in that
- 23:36moment to be willing to do whatever it is God has asked you
- 23:40to do, or Hannah's moment of being willing to move to the
- 23:43wilderness. But sometimes surrender can come
- 23:45in small ways. Maybe when we choose to act on a
- 23:48prompting from the Holy Ghost, even though it might not make
- 23:51sense to us, we surrender to God in big ways and in small.
- 23:55So again, consider your life thinking about the past 12
- 23:58months. Where have new scene surrender
- 24:01and how might God be inviting you to surrender right now?
- 24:05Right now, I have a wonderful opportunity to serve with the
- 24:11Church, and it is something that I'm very interested to do and
- 24:15engage in to further genealogy, not only for myself but for
- 24:20others. However, I have a great job and
- 24:23a very profitable role and I'm realizing that I cannot engage
- 24:28with both and and I am going to have to surrender one for the
- 24:32other. And the question is, which one
- 24:36do I surrender? Thank you.
- 24:38So how are you going to know which one you surrender?
- 24:41I think I already know. My heart is already telling me
- 24:44where I should go. I think it's a question of me
- 24:48just accepting that this is the direction the Lord wants me to
- 24:53follow, and since I want to be a true disciple of Christ, then
- 24:58there is only one option. Really there isn't 2?
- 25:02Thank you. It's a reminder of Esther's
- 25:05words, right? If I perish, I perish.
- 25:10There is such great power and surrender.
- 25:13Now, as you're reading through the book of Esther, you might
- 25:16have noticed something unusual. There's no specific mention of
- 25:19God. There's no prayers that are
- 25:21spoken. There's no prophets performing
- 25:23miracles. God is not explicitly present,
- 25:26but he's unmistakably present. And I think that's how God often
- 25:30works in our lives as well, quietly behind the scenes.
- 25:34Now, what a lot of people don't know is that there are additions
- 25:37to the book of Esther in the Apocrypha.
- 25:40Now, these texts aren't part of our canonized scripture, but
- 25:42they provide some interesting details, including suggesting
- 25:45what Mordecai and Esther said during this time when they were
- 25:49praying. As Esther prepares to go into
- 25:52the king, these apocryphal editions record Mordecai as
- 25:56praying. You know, O Lord, that it was
- 25:58not an insolence or pride or for any love of glory that I refuse
- 26:03to bow down to this proud Haman, for I would have been willing to
- 26:05kiss the soles of his feet to save Israel.
- 26:08But I did this so that, and I might not set human glory above
- 26:12the glory of God, and I will not bow down to anyone but you who
- 26:17are my Lord. Think about Mordecai's example.
- 26:20We probably won't be asked to bow down to Haman, but we might
- 26:23be tempted to prioritize human praise over God's glory.
- 26:29What a prayer for us to consider.
- 26:31I love Mordecai's devotion. Now Esther's prayer in the
- 26:35Apocrypha is also powerful. She says, Oh my Lord, you alone
- 26:40are our king. Help me who am alone and have no
- 26:44helper but you. Give me courage.
- 26:46Oh king of the gods and master of all dominion, put eloquent
- 26:50speech in my mouth. Oh God, save us from the hands
- 26:54of evil doers and save me from my fear.
- 26:58I love that phrase. Save me from my fear.
- 27:00That's a prayer I can pray. Now, these prayers aren't
- 27:03scripture, but Joseph Smith did say that we can benefit from the
- 27:06apocrypha. I love learning about these
- 27:09prayers. So let's go with Esther to the
- 27:12inner court. After three days of fasting,
- 27:14she's standing, waiting to see the king.
- 27:17Can you feel her faith in this moment?
- 27:19You know how the story's going to end, but she doesn't.
- 27:22So slow down. Stand next to the entrance with
- 27:25Esther. Can you feel her heart pounding?
- 27:28There's no sign. There's no Angel.
- 27:30The king still hasn't called for her.
- 27:32Esther doesn't know what will happen next, but she moves
- 27:36forward with faith. She approaches the king with no
- 27:39guarantees, and then the king reaches out his golden scepter.
- 27:43It's a miracle. The king asks Esther what she
- 27:46wants, and she says, well, the only thing I want is for you and
- 27:48Haman to come over and have a banquet with me.
- 27:51So if the king likes the idea of that, and at the banquet, the
- 27:54king again asks Esther, what can I do for you?
- 27:56And Esther says, well, just come back tomorrow for another
- 27:59banquet. Heyman leaves the palace in high
- 28:01spirits. He feels like his status is
- 28:03getting higher and higher. The Queens invited him to two
- 28:06banquets. This is incredible.
- 28:08But as he's leaving, he sees Mordecai sitting at the King's
- 28:11gate, still refusing to bow. Once again, Haman is filled with
- 28:16rage. He goes home, both to his wife
- 28:19and his friends about dining with the queen, but he confesses
- 28:21that none of it means anything to him as long as Mordecai is
- 28:25still alive. And so his wife and friends come
- 28:27up with an idea. Have a pulse it up, reaching to
- 28:31a height of 75 feet, and ask the king in the morning to have
- 28:34Mordecai impaled on it. Then go with the king to the
- 28:38banquet and enjoy yourself. Heyman loves the idea and he has
- 28:42the pole erected. Now, the very night before
- 28:45Mordecai is supposed to be executed, something happens.
- 28:48It's a pivot for the whole story of Esther we read that night.
- 28:53The king could not sleep, so we ordered the book of the
- 28:56Chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read
- 28:59to him. It was found recorded there that
- 29:00Mordecai had exposed 2 of the King's officers who guarded the
- 29:04doorway, who had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes.
- 29:07What honor and recognition has Mordecai received for this?
- 29:11The king asked the attendance answer.
- 29:14Nothing has been done for him now.
- 29:16First, this is a reminder to write in your journal.
- 29:20The entire history of the world could shift based on what you
- 29:23record. This shows us also that God's
- 29:25divine design is alive and well. We saw it with Joseph in Egypt.
- 29:29We saw it with Ruth. Through these little
- 29:32coincidences, it just so happens that the night before Haman was
- 29:35going to request Mordecai's death, the king couldn't sleep.
- 29:39And it just so happens that the book that was brought before
- 29:41them was the one that told about Mordecai.
- 29:44And it just so happens that right as the king was pondering
- 29:46this, Haman comes to ask permission to have Mordecai
- 29:50impaled on a pole when Haman entered.
- 29:52But before Haman could make his request, the king asked Haman
- 29:56what should be done for the man the king delights to honor.
- 29:59Now Haman thought to himself, who is there that the king would
- 30:01rather honor than me? So he answered the king for the
- 30:04man the king delights to honor. Have them bring a royal robe the
- 30:07king has worn and a horse the king is ridden, one with a royal
- 30:11Crest placed on his head. Then let the robe and horse be
- 30:15entrusted to one of the King's most noble Princess.
- 30:18Let them put the robe on the man the king delights to honor, and
- 30:21lead him on the horse through the city streets, proclaiming
- 30:24before him this is what is done for the man the king delights to
- 30:27honor. You can just see Heyman, giddy
- 30:29with excitement, being honored in this way.
- 30:32The king loves Heyman's suggestion and says go at once,
- 30:36get the rope in the horse, and do just as you have suggested
- 30:39for Mordecai, the Jew who sits at the King's gate.
- 30:42Do not neglect anything you have recommended.
- 30:46Can you imagine Heyman's face at this moment?
- 30:50Well, Heyman is shocked, but he has no choice but to obey.
- 30:54So he parades Mordecai through the city and then goes home,
- 30:57completely crushed. But now it's time to go to
- 31:00Esther's second banquet. And it's at this second banquet
- 31:03that Esther makes her request. She says, if I have found favor
- 31:07with you, your Majesty, and if it pleases you, grant me my
- 31:10life, this is my petition, and spare my people, this is my
- 31:14request, for I and my people have been sold to be destroyed,
- 31:18killed and annihilated. King Xerxes asked Esther, who is
- 31:22he? Where is he, the man who is
- 31:23dared to do such a thing? Esther said.
- 31:26An adversary and an enemy, this vile Haman.
- 31:30The king got up in a rage and went out into the palace garden.
- 31:33But Haman, realizing that the king had already decided his
- 31:36fate, stayed behind to beg Queen Esther for his life.
- 31:40Just as the king returned from the palace garden to the banquet
- 31:42hall, Haman was falling on the couch where Esther was
- 31:45reclaiming. The king exclaimed.
- 31:47Will he even molest the queen while she is with me in the
- 31:50house? Just then one of the servants
- 31:53told the king a pole reaching to a height of 75 feet stands by
- 31:56Haman's house. He had it set up for Mordecai,
- 31:59who spoke up to help the king. And so, on the King's orders,
- 32:02they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai.
- 32:07So now Haman's gone. But the decree to annihilate the
- 32:10Jews is still in effect. It couldn't be revoked according
- 32:14to Persian law. So Xerxes gives Haman's estate
- 32:17to Esther and his signet ring to Mordecai.
- 32:20Since Xerxes can't cancel the first decree, he authorizes
- 32:24Mordecai to issue a second one on the day that had been
- 32:27appointed. Now the Jews are authorized to
- 32:30protect themselves, and to commemorate this reversal of
- 32:33fortune, Mordecai and Esther established a new festival.
- 32:37We read These days were called Purim from the word poor,
- 32:42referring to the law that Haman had cast.
- 32:45It's ironic Haman cast lots the poor to determine the lucky date
- 32:51to destroy the Jews, but God uses this very timeline to
- 32:54destroy Haman instead. We then read and these days of
- 32:58Purim should never fail to be celebrated by the Jews.
- 33:03Now, this suggests that Jesus Christ himself celebrated Purim.
- 33:08Some of you might be yourself. This sounds like a great
- 33:09holiday, and if it was good enough for the Savior, it's good
- 33:11enough for me. I wish I could learn more about
- 33:13how to celebrate Purim. Wish granted.
- 33:15On the course website I have all the details of how you can
- 33:18celebrate Purim in a modern setting.
- 33:20But before we conclude, I want to highlight two big picture
- 33:24messages that we might easily miss.
- 33:27First is Saul's reversal. If you remember from the book of
- 33:30Samuel, King Saul was a descendant of Benjamin, and at
- 33:34one point Samuel told Saul to kill Agag and destroy all the
- 33:38animals of the Amalekites. But Saul failed.
- 33:42He spared King Agag and he kept some of the plunder for himself.
- 33:47Because of this disobedience, Samuel told Saul, the the Lord
- 33:51has torn the Kingdom of Israel from you today.
- 33:54But in the book of Esther that failure is reversed.
- 33:58Like Saul, Mordecai was also a descendant of Benjamin.
- 34:01Haman is a descendant of Agag. Where Saul failed to kill Agag,
- 34:07Mordecai presides over the downfall of Haman and all of his
- 34:10descendants. Where Saul, contrary to Samuel's
- 34:14command, kept some of the plunder.
- 34:17The book of Esther repeatedly points out that the Jews did not
- 34:21keep any of the plunder from their enemies in the time of
- 34:24Mordecai and Esther. Saul had great power and failed.
- 34:28Mordecai had no power and succeeded.
- 34:31So remember, even if all the odds are stacked against you,
- 34:35you still play an important role in bringing about God's
- 34:38purposes. Now a second big picture message
- 34:41we see is Esther as a type of Christ.
- 34:45Do you remember what Paul wrote about the Savior?
- 34:48He said Jesus emptied himself, taking the form of a slave,
- 34:52assuming human likeness and being found in appearance as a
- 34:56human. He humbled himself and became
- 34:58obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
- 35:03This passage gives us a lens for reading the book of Esther.
- 35:07Esther risk losing her high place of standing.
- 35:11She was willing to lower herself to bless the people.
- 35:16Think about it. Esther steps into danger she did
- 35:19not create to rescue those who could not help themselves.
- 35:24Esther points us to Jesus Christ that there's a difference.
- 35:27Esther risked her life. Jesus gave his life.
- 35:32Esther says if I perish, I perish, but Jesus knows he will
- 35:37perish. He says for this cause came I
- 35:40into the world. Esther's surrender points to the
- 35:43greatest surrender, Christ's. And we see this surrender in
- 35:47Gethsemane when he said, Father, if thou be willing, remove this
- 35:51cup from me, nevertheless not my will, but thine be done.
- 35:56This is the ultimate surrender. And when our lives are centered
- 36:00on Christ, when our hopes, our ambitions, our sense of worth
- 36:04are all rooted in his love, that's when we find the strength
- 36:08to surrender as well. Not because surrender is easy,
- 36:12but because we know we are surrendering to a king who first
- 36:16surrendered himself for us.
