- 0:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm Sam from Architects and I'm very happy to
- 0:27Speaker 1: be here this morning and talking to you about our album,
- 0:31Speaker 1: The Sky, The Earth and All Between.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Fantastic Sam, Thanks for training us today or bitchet legged
- 0:36Speaker 2: as you are.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, I'm good, I'm good. I'll be all good.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Oh what Architects are so close to drop in your
- 0:44Speaker 2: eleven studio album, The Sky, The Earth and All Between
- 0:47Speaker 2: on February twenty eight. So hey, feeling bra You've done
- 0:49Speaker 2: a few of these, but how do you feel about
- 0:51Speaker 2: this chicker album?
- 0:53Speaker 3: Yeah? Feeling pretty good, man. I think it's an exciting
- 0:55Speaker 3: time for us.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I think, Yeah, eleven albums in, we've we've we've had
- 1:00Speaker 1: a fair share of these sort of weeks.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Leading into it.
- 1:04Speaker 1: But yeah, I feel like we came back with a
- 1:07Speaker 1: point to prove. I think if you're going to release
- 1:10Speaker 1: an album, it has to be good. But I think
- 1:13Speaker 1: if you're on your eleventh album, I think a lot
- 1:16Speaker 1: of people have kind of made their mind up about
- 1:17Speaker 1: you at.
- 1:18Speaker 3: This point, so you have to come in with you
- 1:21Speaker 3: have to come back swinging, and you have.
- 1:22Speaker 1: To really show that there was a real purpose behind
- 1:26Speaker 1: the album being released and the effort and energy that
- 1:29Speaker 1: went into it has been yeah, crazy, to be fair, like,
- 1:33Speaker 1: We've really worked so hard on it, and yeah, I'm
- 1:37Speaker 1: so proud of it. I think I think it's one
- 1:39Speaker 1: of our best albums, probably our best album. I would
- 1:42Speaker 1: actually say it's my favorite. I know everyone in the
- 1:44Speaker 1: band probably says that when they when they're releasing their record,
- 1:48Speaker 1: but yeah, I'm just so proud of it and so
- 1:50Speaker 1: proud of the effort and energy that we put into it.
- 1:53Speaker 3: And yeah, the reaction so far has been amazing.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Well, so, you know, I was released your last album,
- 1:58Speaker 2: The Classic Symptoms of a I Can Spirit, back in
- 2:00Speaker 2: twenty twenty. So what's changed with Architects and the very
- 2:04Speaker 2: between that album and this album.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Well, we don't have the same lineup.
- 2:08Speaker 1: We have a different lineup that we have the four
- 2:10Speaker 1: of us that have been around since Lost Forever. We
- 2:16Speaker 1: wrote the record and the album was produced by Jordan
- 2:19Speaker 1: Fish and me. Dan and Jordan were in the studio
- 2:21Speaker 1: together creating it, and yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 3: It's just like a kind of another section of Architects.
- 2:27Speaker 4: You know.
- 2:27Speaker 1: We we've been through been through a few variations, you know,
- 2:32Speaker 1: some by choice, some by some by just the way
- 2:36Speaker 1: of the world. And yeah, it just it just felt
- 2:40Speaker 1: it felt like a very creative time for us. I
- 2:43Speaker 1: think especially especially for me, Dan and Jordan and the
- 2:46Speaker 1: studio that the energy between us felt just felt perfect.
- 2:49Speaker 3: And yeah, I'm just so happy with the outcome.
- 2:54Speaker 2: So I can you tell us a bit more about
- 2:56Speaker 2: the album from a musical point of view and what
- 2:58Speaker 2: you're actually going for with.
- 2:59Speaker 1: It Musically, I think we've just obviously leaning a little
- 3:06Speaker 1: bit on our on our history and and touching into
- 3:10Speaker 1: stuff that we've done before. But at the same time,
- 3:12Speaker 1: you don't just want to be an architect's covers band,
- 3:16Speaker 1: because there's a lot of them out there, so we
- 3:18Speaker 1: wanted to we wanted to sort of push forward with
- 3:22Speaker 1: some of those sounds as well, you know, enter into
- 3:24Speaker 1: a sort of current architects world.
- 3:26Speaker 3: But it's I think it's always nice to.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Kind of knock down the sort of barriers of your
- 3:31Speaker 1: history and sort of go back in and sort of
- 3:34Speaker 1: learn from from things that you've done in the past
- 3:37Speaker 1: and things that kind of make you you, rather than
- 3:39Speaker 1: sort of hiding from them, because you know, it's not
- 3:42Speaker 1: it's not just your band, it's your sort of fans
- 3:45Speaker 1: band as well, and it's nice to sort of, yeah,
- 3:49Speaker 1: sort of feel that excitement towards certain parts of the
- 3:52Speaker 1: record that you know people are going to buzz off of.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Right, and today you released the singles Whiplash, Seeing Red,
- 3:59Speaker 2: and Curve. So are they a good sonic representation of
- 4:02Speaker 2: what do we expect from the whole album?
- 4:03Speaker 5: Or they just sort of scratching the surface.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Yeah, we've got black Hole out as well, and yeah,
- 4:09Speaker 3: I think so. I think it's a pretty good representation.
- 4:11Speaker 3: I think there's there's there's a few more. There's a
- 4:14Speaker 3: few more twists and turns on.
- 4:16Speaker 1: The record, Like black Hole that we just released is
- 4:21Speaker 1: probably one of the heaviest Architects songs we've ever done.
- 4:28Speaker 1: And then probably the single that we're going to do next,
- 4:32Speaker 1: which should be out soon is Yeah, it's sort of like, yeah,
- 4:38Speaker 1: probably the opposite of that. But they're sort of next
- 4:40Speaker 1: to each other on the record, so it always makes
- 4:42Speaker 1: me laugh when they're sort of playing to each other.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And Dan was actually quite an aside that Whiplash was
- 4:50Speaker 2: the beginning of a new era for Architects.
- 4:52Speaker 5: What does it mean by that.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I think it's sort of entering into this sort of
- 4:58Speaker 1: place of where we were at. I mean at the
- 5:01Speaker 1: time Whiplash was the sort of first phase of of
- 5:07Speaker 1: I guess the like proper singles of the record, like
- 5:10Speaker 1: released in the album, and that was around the time
- 5:12Speaker 1: where we sort of decided to do the videos respector
- 5:16Speaker 1: who did who did the video for Whiplash, and we
- 5:18Speaker 1: just again went in with the same mentality that we
- 5:21Speaker 1: had with the record, where it was like, you know,
- 5:22Speaker 1: you've got to go in with the best, the best people.
- 5:26Speaker 1: You know, if you want people to watch the video,
- 5:28Speaker 1: going with the best producers, you want people to like
- 5:31Speaker 1: your band, right right, with the best producer, you know,
- 5:33Speaker 1: go and do the best artwork, do and do the
- 5:36Speaker 1: best songs. It has to be, you know, everything at
- 5:39Speaker 1: this level. To stay where you are and to keep
- 5:43Speaker 1: being noticed, it has to be it has to be
- 5:45Speaker 1: the best. So yeah, it was moving into this era
- 5:49Speaker 1: of I think just trying to make Architects tap into
- 5:53Speaker 1: this sort of unfilled potential that we felt like we had.
- 5:57Speaker 2: At the album started a song Elegit It's got to
- 6:00Speaker 2: It's a nice mellotic passage that sort of gets a
- 6:03Speaker 2: bit whispery and devilish towards the end, but it's a
- 6:06Speaker 2: nice way to open the album, like why did you
- 6:08Speaker 2: chay that.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Well, yeah, elegy, I think we wanted to.
- 6:12Speaker 3: We started with it.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Obviously, it kicks in and it's pretty pretty outrageous musically,
- 6:18Speaker 1: but I kind of like the fact that the start
- 6:20Speaker 1: of it you sort of think you know where it's
- 6:22Speaker 1: going and then it clearly takes you down another path.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Again, I think that's one of the best Architects songs
- 6:30Speaker 1: we've ever written. And I think we kind of went
- 6:32Speaker 1: in with the mentality of, yeah, try and make the
- 6:36Speaker 1: best Architects album opener ever, and that was one of
- 6:41Speaker 1: the ones that we'd written quite a little bit of
- 6:43Speaker 1: the record, and then when we got to that, to
- 6:46Speaker 1: that it was like, okay, right now, we need to
- 6:48Speaker 1: get the best album opener, And that was the one,
- 6:51Speaker 1: the one song we kind of went out of our
- 6:53Speaker 1: way to.
- 6:54Speaker 3: With a statement, you know, which was like, right, let's
- 6:57Speaker 3: get this done.
- 6:58Speaker 2: The actual time of the with the sky that herd
- 7:01Speaker 2: in all Between isn't actually a song on.
- 7:03Speaker 5: The albums, so I'm guessing it's got a bit deeper meaning.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Yeah, well it's the it's.
- 7:08Speaker 1: The lyric in the elegy, so it's one of the
- 7:11Speaker 1: one of the bigger moments in that So when we
- 7:15Speaker 1: were recording that and it got and it got into
- 7:18Speaker 1: that world it felt, you know, it got to that
- 7:21Speaker 1: part in the song.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Me and Jordan straight away were pretty adamant that.
- 7:26Speaker 1: That was a special line, so we pulled that up
- 7:29Speaker 1: with Dan and yeah, from there it's sort of, yeah,
- 7:32Speaker 1: it's stuck around. I think Dan tried to come up
- 7:35Speaker 1: with a few other ideas, but it just nothing ever
- 7:38Speaker 1: sat as well as that, And I think it's, you.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Know, it's quite a broad you know, it's quite a broad.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Meaning, but I guess it kind of means everything and
- 7:47Speaker 1: nothing at the same time. I think it's it's a
- 7:50Speaker 1: classic sort of long Architects album title that we were
- 7:54Speaker 1: thinking about trying to move away from.
- 7:55Speaker 3: But yeah, in the end, it just, yeah, it's that right.
- 8:01Speaker 6: Now.
- 8:01Speaker 2: You joined Architects for their second album, Ruin, back in
- 8:04Speaker 2: two thousand and seven, Mate, So what was that period life.
- 8:08Speaker 5: For the band and where did you fit into the
- 8:09Speaker 5: whole scheme of things?
- 8:10Speaker 3: Back then?
- 8:12Speaker 1: It was pretty fucking small, But I couldn't get I
- 8:17Speaker 1: couldn't care less at that time I was, and they'd
- 8:20Speaker 1: done like a they've done a European tour. They were
- 8:26Speaker 1: talking about doing another one and they sort of like
- 8:29Speaker 1: just had like a EP out, like a seven track
- 8:32Speaker 1: record called Nightmares, and they were just touring.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Like proper tour. They were doing proper tours, and the
- 8:40Speaker 3: bands that I was in at the time, we.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Were doing like, I know, like a few UK tours
- 8:44Speaker 1: here and there, so that when the opportunity came to
- 8:49Speaker 1: try out for them and I knew some of them,
- 8:52Speaker 1: it was just a really cool moment.
- 8:54Speaker 3: We were so similar from the off.
- 8:56Speaker 1: We sort of all connected and became good friends.
- 9:02Speaker 3: And yeah, yeah time the time around them was weird.
- 9:05Speaker 3: It was a different time.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I mean there I did a tour with their singer
- 9:10Speaker 1: where I would sing.
- 9:12Speaker 3: The last song of their set, so they would do.
- 9:14Speaker 1: An encore and I would come out and sing the
- 9:16Speaker 1: last song of their set, and they were like, this
- 9:17Speaker 1: is our new singer, you know.
- 9:20Speaker 3: So that's how long ago it was. Because there wasn't.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Like, you know, we couldn't might put out like a
- 9:25Speaker 1: press release or whatever thingy or it was just like
- 9:29Speaker 1: my space, so we would just be me coming out there.
- 9:34Speaker 3: So I just sort of.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Spend the rest of the set, like the rest of
- 9:36Speaker 1: the ten songs, just motioning for them or selling merch
- 9:40Speaker 1: and then then then go up and sing with them.
- 9:44Speaker 3: So yeah, it was kind of cool.
- 9:45Speaker 1: It was a fun, fun time for me, I think, yeah,
- 9:49Speaker 1: it was a good time for all of us, and.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Thank god I tried out.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and you only had about six weeks from joining
- 10:00Speaker 2: the band to write in the album Ruined.
- 10:02Speaker 5: Mate, What was that difficult for you?
- 10:04Speaker 4: Like?
- 10:04Speaker 5: What did your dreadaline get you through?
- 10:07Speaker 3: I didn't have a fucking clue what I was doing.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I would have a fucking clude.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I've been a dramma before it, so I had no
- 10:14Speaker 1: idea about, you know, how to look after my boys,
- 10:18Speaker 1: how to use it. Really, I was just like a kid,
- 10:21Speaker 1: just sort of getting by. So yeah, there was sort
- 10:25Speaker 1: of the the bliss of not of lot, not not
- 10:29Speaker 1: really having any fear. But yeah, I mean it's it's funny,
- 10:33Speaker 1: you know, Like I listened back to it now and
- 10:35Speaker 1: I'm like, what the fuck was I doing? But you
- 10:38Speaker 1: know again again, it's it's it serves its purpose when
- 10:41Speaker 1: it was when it was there.
- 10:43Speaker 2: So I was on that subject, mate, I'm looking back
- 10:45Speaker 2: on it now, like, how would you say that you've
- 10:48Speaker 2: grown as a musician and as a performer over your
- 10:51Speaker 2: time with Architects.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I think I'm probably a bit more aware now than
- 10:57Speaker 1: I was when I was a kid, So I try
- 10:59Speaker 1: and so I'm you know, you have the innocence of
- 11:02Speaker 1: no fear. I think when you're younger, you're just like,
- 11:06Speaker 1: I'm the fucking best.
- 11:07Speaker 3: It doesn't matter.
- 11:09Speaker 1: You get a little bit, you get a little bit older,
- 11:11Speaker 1: and you're like, ah, maybe I'm not, but no, I think, yeah,
- 11:17Speaker 1: just with there's I think there's always just been a
- 11:22Speaker 1: want to try and be better and to try and succeed,
- 11:25Speaker 1: and to try and push myself as a musician, which
- 11:29Speaker 1: I think makes you learn more.
- 11:31Speaker 3: You know, you kind of you know, it's.
- 11:33Speaker 1: It's a it's a it's the privilege to sort of
- 11:36Speaker 1: be able to still be doing this, but you know,
- 11:39Speaker 1: you have to you have to continually push yourself and
- 11:43Speaker 1: learn because otherwise what's the point And otherwise you're just
- 11:46Speaker 1: going to get overtaken by other people that are more
- 11:49Speaker 1: hungry than you.
- 11:50Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Lucky that I've always had the hunger and lucky that
- 11:53Speaker 1: the guys in the band have as well. And you know,
- 11:57Speaker 1: I feel like I'm always learning new things and new
- 12:00Speaker 1: styles of music, and you know, my my eyes and
- 12:03Speaker 1: ears are always open and have a singing coach now
- 12:07Speaker 1: vocal coach, and we work together.
- 12:09Speaker 3: And you know, I think you know, even Ronaldo's got
- 12:12Speaker 3: a manager.
- 12:13Speaker 1: You know, there's there's you know, you have to constantly
- 12:15Speaker 1: keep pushing yourself and not thinking that you you know
- 12:18Speaker 1: everything you know which you think you do when you're
- 12:21Speaker 1: a kid.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Right now, before I let you go, bro, I've started
- 12:25Speaker 2: a new section in heavy called photo Bomb.
- 12:27Speaker 5: So basically before we spoke.
- 12:29Speaker 2: I've trolled through your social media and I've come up
- 12:32Speaker 2: with a couple of photos I want to ask you a
- 12:33Speaker 2: little bit more about.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Please.
- 12:35Speaker 7: I've come up with this one here, mate, like from stage,
- 12:40Speaker 7: like you look down into the moshpit and you see
- 12:42Speaker 7: something like the starting to form, like it's your first thought,
- 12:45Speaker 7: Fuck I want to be in there, or thank fuck
- 12:47Speaker 7: I'm not, because I can imagine your pits that get
- 12:49Speaker 7: pretty wild.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Yeah, they're pretty pretty crazy ones. I'm one of those
- 12:55Speaker 1: people that's like I say it from stage as well.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I'm always like you, these people are fucking crazy because
- 13:01Speaker 1: if someone was telling me to do this stuff, I'd
- 13:03Speaker 1: be like, go fuck yourself.
- 13:06Speaker 3: I'm standing here with a drink. I just want to.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Watch this band, like are you insane? But it's I'm
- 13:11Speaker 1: always so grateful for it, because you know, the energy
- 13:14Speaker 1: that's produced in those in those mosh pits just gets
- 13:18Speaker 1: us going. We're one of those bands where it's like,
- 13:20Speaker 1: if the crowd's good, we're going to be great. I
- 13:22Speaker 1: think it's just we really feed off that energy. And
- 13:25Speaker 1: I think if like the crowd is stand still, we're
- 13:27Speaker 1: not giving inst anything, We're just never going to be good.
- 13:30Speaker 3: It just it just feels embarrassing if you're just.
- 13:33Speaker 1: There just like like a kid in your in your
- 13:36Speaker 1: in your room and you're like parents have just walked
- 13:39Speaker 1: in and you singing with a hair brush. You know,
- 13:40Speaker 1: it just feels awkward and like anxiety inducing. And if
- 13:44Speaker 1: everyone's going crazy and you're like, well, I guess we're
- 13:46Speaker 1: all mental, so we'll we fit well.
- 13:51Speaker 5: So what's the funniest thing you've ever seen? Looking from
- 13:54Speaker 5: stage looking out?
- 13:56Speaker 1: I've seen some funny stuff over the years. I think
- 14:00Speaker 1: it's all, you know, the funny ones that we just
- 14:02Speaker 1: when we've done shows with slip Rot and festivals with Sliplot,
- 14:06Speaker 1: because you look out in the crowd and some of
- 14:08Speaker 1: the crowd just are so into slip Root, they just
- 14:10Speaker 1: fully dressed up like them, and they'll have like the
- 14:13Speaker 1: full original slipnot masks, so it looks like you're like
- 14:16Speaker 1: performing to slipnot going crazy, which is funny.
- 14:23Speaker 5: All right. I found one more for you, mate.
- 14:26Speaker 2: It's running and you can't quite see the face clearly,
- 14:29Speaker 2: but from what I can see, there's there's a touch
- 14:31Speaker 2: of fear there.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that was in That was in the studio. Yeah,
- 14:36Speaker 1: there was a I guess I don't even know what
- 14:39Speaker 1: you call it. It's a rope swing just over this lake.
- 14:42Speaker 1: And we were just yeah, just yeah, we we just
- 14:45Speaker 1: went on a really nice walk. It was in in
- 14:47Speaker 1: the countryside in Bath where we tracked the drums that
- 14:53Speaker 1: we tracked the drums for that that was doing cars,
- 14:56Speaker 1: and that was a Peter Gabriel studio and yeah, it
- 15:01Speaker 1: was just a really nice, really nice walk around and
- 15:04Speaker 1: then we just saw this rope swing and I just thought,
- 15:06Speaker 1: fuck it, I got a down this and uh yeah,
- 15:09Speaker 1: somehow was all right.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Two things I noticed about that, though, made is one
- 15:13Speaker 2: you got too many clothes on to be hitting the water.
- 15:15Speaker 5: And two, when you do hit the water, it does
- 15:18Speaker 5: look very fucking deep. I hope you held on.
- 15:20Speaker 3: No, Yeah, yeah, I held on for dear life.
- 15:22Speaker 8: Then Wow, yeah, said.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Clack.
- 16:03Speaker 9: Fjot you by he's the one.
- 16:06Speaker 4: Tell you fucking wa bou.
- 16:17Speaker 9: Jove, let's says send. Can't some fun hill show.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Chill and get that sound?
- 16:38Speaker 3: Did you find that?
- 16:40Speaker 9: Clas were said it by fucking job.
- 16:43Speaker 6: You got to find her the sl shouting out cross place,
- 16:47Speaker 6: trying to find that stim of the sacro Wow, find
- 16:51Speaker 6: chality that some.
- 16:55Speaker 8: Yoh fucking out half the town.
- 16:58Speaker 9: Try he's the one.
- 17:00Speaker 4: I'm fun?
- 17:02Speaker 9: Will we say time?
- 17:13Speaker 4: This guy.
- 17:16Speaker 9: Can't something show? Who comes.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Says from the county store? Surely from the answers?
- 17:43Speaker 9: What's a thous?
- 17:44Speaker 4: The lablas?
- 17:45Speaker 9: What's a wealth?
- 17:46Speaker 4: For the web?
- 17:47Speaker 9: Lisites? Sis?
- 17:48Speaker 4: What's about? What's the web? Blank? That sertainness?
- 17:50Speaker 9: What's about for a watch?
- 17:59Speaker 4: Got sell aside? What she didn't know? The fuck out?
- 18:05Speaker 6: Shot y psychoga, it's the wild done sucking around?
- 18:18Speaker 9: Wait about its.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Jump off him and.
- 18:28Speaker 9: My safe myself.
