- 0:02Me drinking beer with friends. No one can stop busting the
- 0:08brewery on the ground. Bob Chester and Bobby racing us
- 0:17laughs in a open beer. Do you?
- 0:20Say sinners laughs. Hey, Speaking of West Coast
- 0:35Ipas, one of the most famous ones, at least for us and maybe
- 0:39not for you guys so much if you get it a lot, but plenty of the
- 0:41elder. How do you guys feel about
- 0:43plenty? It is like kind of the ultimate
- 0:44West Coast IPA, at least in a lot of people's minds.
- 0:47How do you guys feel about it? I have never had one.
- 0:49Really. Actually it's true, but it's
- 0:52also a lie. So I I have a plenty of the
- 0:56elder and the fridge that I haven't opened yet.
- 0:58OK. But I have had what was the
- 1:02planning for president? I had that last year.
- 1:05I enjoyed it. Yeah.
- 1:06I I thought it was a good beer. But I know that that planning
- 1:09the elder, planning the younger is kind of, you know, the the
- 1:13the end all be all quote UN quote of of those West Coast IP
- 1:16as and I haven't had either one of those yet.
- 1:18And I know they just in March, they just had the planning the
- 1:21younger release. So yeah, go ahead, Joe.
- 1:24No, no, no. So I, I had never had one.
- 1:27And then my daughter and son-in-law got stationed in
- 1:30Fairfield, CA. He's in the Air Force and he was
- 1:33at the Air Force Base. So wife and I went up and stayed
- 1:36with them and the granddaughters and we went up to Santa Rosa and
- 1:40I went to the, the, the Russian River Pub because that was like,
- 1:44I, I wanted to try a plant of the elder.
- 1:46That's like, I keep hearing about this thing.
- 1:48People keep raving about it. So I went up there.
- 1:50I had one and probably not going to be a popular opinion to what
- 1:55I'm about to say. It was a good West Coast IPAI.
- 1:59Don't see what all the hype was about because two days later I
- 2:04had a Stone IPA. Way better West Coast
- 2:08representation of what it should be.
- 2:10I'm not in any way bashing Russian River.
- 2:12I would never do that. I had their blind pig that was
- 2:16amazing. I got like a flight of beer. 17
- 2:18different ones they bought to me and loved every one of them.
- 2:21I just I don't understand the hype of Plan of the Elder.
- 2:24It's a great West Coast IPA but there's better ones out there
- 2:28and that might not be a popular opinion among beer people.
- 2:30But that's just that's just me. I don't understand the hype.
- 2:33And you are a West Coast IPA guy, so you've had several of
- 2:37them. So you get that, you know, you
- 2:38understand. And you know what?
- 2:39Maybe what it should be, I can almost equate it to you guys,
- 2:42bourbon guys at all. Yeah.
- 2:44Yeah. So you know, Blanton's, right.
- 2:46Blanton's. Yeah, that's the one everybody
- 2:48chases, right? I had Steve chasing me Kentucky
- 2:50one time, like just looking for plans as kind of as I was
- 2:55getting into bourbon. And Blanton's is that same
- 2:58thing. It's the marketing again.
- 3:00It's not, it's a great bourbon. It's it's fantastic.
- 3:03But but you chase it, right? You chase it, you chase it and
- 3:06you get it like, OK, OK, it's good.
- 3:08I had it, you know, but there are so many things out there
- 3:10that could be better and at a better price point too.
- 3:12At the same time, it's that same thing.
- 3:14It's like we're, we're, we're seeking this Holy Grail kind of
- 3:17thing, or the one that they tell us is the Holy Grail.
- 3:20Yeah, and and you know, now that we mentioned that it I really
- 3:23wonder where all that starts. You know how big names come
- 3:27about and the, and, and they're so, so known.
- 3:29Like you guys, the planning Russian River group that have
- 3:33like a stronghold hold over the, the West Coast IPA.
- 3:36And then you go to the East Coast and obviously you have
- 3:39like the, the tree house cult that's up there with hazy Ipas
- 3:43and, and all that stuff. And don't get me wrong, like all
- 3:45that stuff's good, but is it better than than things you can
- 3:49get elsewhere? You know, I don't know, whatever
- 3:52it is that the branding and everything, they've just hit
- 3:55and. Availability is the other thing.
- 3:58If you can't get it everywhere, that's the one everybody wants
- 4:01again. Yep.
- 4:02Lands, right. It's allocated when it comes
- 4:04out, and they'll be righteous to get it because everybody must
- 4:06have it. Yeah.
- 4:07You know, I think Russian River distributes to seven states,
- 4:10maybe Colorado being one, and there's a few maybe in the
- 4:12Northeast, so they can get it. But if you can get it every day,
- 4:15look, I can go get plenty anytime I want.
- 4:17Yeah. Not as big of a deal, you know,
- 4:19And I think that I think that's a big point with Stone.
- 4:21Like I think Stone makes great beer, some of the best beer in
- 4:24the country. And I completely understand, you
- 4:27know, why, why Joe loves everything that they put out
- 4:30because it's great stuff. But at the same time, you know,
- 4:33have they kind of shot themselves in the foot a little
- 4:35bit, you know, being available on such a wide scale?
- 4:38Because I do. I do think that that's kind of
- 4:41part of it is that it becomes so readily available everywhere
- 4:44that. Yeah, you know it.
- 4:46It kind of turns that crowd away.
- 4:48Yeah, the masses lose a little bit of interest.
- 4:50Three Floyds was that way in this area probably most
- 4:53recently. Yeah, like I'd go to Kentucky
- 4:55and could get zombie dust and and everybody's chasing zombie
- 4:58dust, right. And you go through tap room or
- 5:00something and they give you like a 10 or a 12 ounce pour of it
- 5:03like something small. And then they finally got it
- 5:05here in in in Tennessee and like, I love it and I get it
- 5:08places, but I could get it anytime I want to now, so.
- 5:11It's not Yeah, yeah, you know, the the hunt is over.
- 5:14You you want. I want.
- 5:16And I. Think I think the next one.
- 5:19Yeah, I think the, the, the biggest example of that, at
- 5:22least for me, is the hype around treehouse.
- 5:25You know, and, and I've had, you know, people send me treehouse
- 5:28beers and and they've been good. Is it like the end all be all?
- 5:32No, it's, it's good beer. But I think that Treehouse, like
- 5:37Russian River, they built this kind of, you can't get it
- 5:41anywhere but here thing with it. Yeah.
- 5:44And it becomes this white whale of if you want it, you got to
- 5:48come to us because we're not going to send it to you.
- 5:51Right. And I think that's what helps
- 5:53kind of feed the the mystique about it.
- 5:55But like Nick, I love seeing lines for breweries.
- 5:59I think that's a great thing to come back.
- 6:01And like you guys said, you know, plenty of the younger,
- 6:04they just had the thing sold out down the street.
- 6:07And you talked about 3 Floyds, I don't know if they still do it
- 6:11or not, but they have like Dark Lord days, like 3 days of where
- 6:14they would do Dark Lord. And I used to see pictures of
- 6:16that. People lined up for like a mile
- 6:19to get like 4 bottles of that thing.
- 6:21Yeah, that's good for the industry.
- 6:23But the hype comes from if you want it, you got to come to us
- 6:27and get it. Whereas with me with Stone, they
- 6:31send it out into the world and go here's our beer.
- 6:34So there's, there's a flip side to, yeah, you got to come to us.
- 6:39But hey, you like our beer? It's available in all 50 states.
- 6:42You can get it whenever you want.
- 6:44So hey. Joe, can I, can I just say this
- 6:46about, can I just say this about Stone?
- 6:48You were talking on one of your podcast episodes about Stone so
- 6:51much. I got so excited.
- 6:53I want to run through a wall to go get it.
- 6:55I mean, I was like, I was like, this guy is hyping up to and I
- 6:59went on, I went on on tapped and I looked and I I checked in a
- 7:03Stone IPA at about why it was like 2021.
- 7:06So and and it's so funny. I've seen their beer.
- 7:10I think, Scott, they sell Stone here in Nashville, don't they?
- 7:12I think so, yeah. I was going to say it's like one
- 7:14of the things though, it's like so much beer, you know, so many
- 7:17styles. And now, because of you, Joe,
- 7:20and of course you too, Nick, I'm gonna have to go out and yeah,
- 7:24yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm gonna have to.
- 7:27Yeah, I gotta go. I gotta go now because I listen
- 7:31to your podcast about nothing. I have to go out and I have to
- 7:36get me a Stone IPA. Well, if you can't get them, let
- 7:40us know because me and Joe both have access to it so.
- 7:43There you go. We we got you idiot back either
- 7:46way. It does go back to those things.
- 7:48If I could, you know, you look in on a shelf, right and say,
- 7:50oh, I've seen Arrogant Bastard or stuff whatever 1000 times.
- 7:53I'm just looking past it for something else kind of thing.
- 7:55But it's always there. Like if it's if it's there, you
- 7:57just kind of sometimes you just look past it.
- 7:59I'm guilty of it because when I go to a liquor store, some of my
- 8:02favorite beers might be on the shelf, but I'm looking for
- 8:03something new. That's just the way I drink
- 8:05beer. That's why I love to drink beer.
- 8:07Yep, Yep. And I and I should, I should
- 8:09have more staples in my life. It's, you know, go TOS and
- 8:12stuff. But every time I go to the
- 8:13liquor store, I want something new.
- 8:15That's that's my goal. Yeah, I, I think I'm the same
- 8:18way, way as you are, Scott, because, you know, we get so
- 8:23much craft beer at this point that you always want something
- 8:26different. You know, there's a couple beers
- 8:28that I can drink all the time and I'll get a four pack of it
- 8:30every now and then. But if I want to go out and
- 8:33spend 20 bucks on a four pack of beer, you know, I don't want to
- 8:35get the same thing over and over and over again.
- 8:38So, and, and also like, how do you broaden your horizons if you
- 8:41don't try new things? So anytime I'm the same way as
- 8:45you, you know, anytime that I see something posted or, you
- 8:48know, I'll make a weekly trip to the store and just walk up and
- 8:51down the aisles a few times just to see if something catches my
- 8:54eye that's different. And and for that reason, because
- 8:56it's always want to try, there's new things, especially once your
- 8:59palette is evolved enough to to appreciate them more.
- 9:03That's a great point. You could get a four pack of
- 9:05singles like that's how I get, and you could have four
- 9:07different styles in that thing and like, hey, maybe, yeah, I
- 9:10like Berliner. I know what a Berliner is.
- 9:12But you get throw one in there like shit, you know, you having
- 9:14maybe a newfound appreciation or something, just trying something
- 9:17new all the time. Yeah, and there.
- 9:19And there's nothing wrong with that.
- 9:20And, and there's also nothing wrong.
- 9:21We talked about it earlier with coming across a beer that you
- 9:24don't like. That's part of the learning
- 9:26process too. Like like you were saying Scott
- 9:28is, you know, it's not that and I think Joe was saying it too.
- 9:31It's not that you don't like beer, you just don't like that
- 9:33kind and you're not going to know that until you try it.
- 9:36But at at the same time, you know, going back to the untapped
- 9:39conversation, one of my biggest pet peeves are there's people
- 9:42that just bash a beer on untapped because they don't like
- 9:44it. And, and it, it drives me
- 9:47absolutely nuts because for, for example, I don't like Heath of
- 9:51Izins. I just I that clove banana
- 9:53Ester. I can't, it's too much for me.
- 9:55But if I try 1 and I don't like it, the first thing that I do
- 9:59isn't going to be to open untapped, give it like a .5
- 10:02rating and be like, this beer fucking sucks.
- 10:04You know, it's just not, it's not my style.
- 10:07I appreciate the, the style and it, it has its place among beer
- 10:11lovers. It's just not for me.
- 10:13But just because it's not for me doesn't mean I'm going to go out
- 10:15and bash it to the world either. Nick, I was just listening to
- 10:19your episode 9 this morning with you guys.
- 10:22And when you were talking about that on the Untapped app, and it
- 10:25was funny because I think one of the exact quotes you said was
- 10:29you go into a brewery and you see these people, they're on
- 10:31their phones and it kind of you kind of get on their, it kind of
- 10:33gets on your nerves because you're like, you know that
- 10:36they're looking and they're trying to figure out, do they
- 10:38want this beer based on the universal ratings?
- 10:41See, I'm just the opposite. I go in, I don't look at
- 10:45necessarily the universal ratings because I don't care
- 10:48what the universal ratings are. I go in and I'm looking on my
- 10:51untapped app to see if I've had this beer before and if I
- 10:54haven't, there's a good chance I'm going to get it.
- 10:56Now I may look to see like if you've rated it or if Joe or you
- 11:01know, Scott, if you guys have rated it in to see what maybe
- 11:04you're looking at looking at it, you know, but I want to get it.
- 11:08And if I don't like it, I don't. I mean, even before we started
- 11:14this podcast and we were talking to brewery owners, I wouldn't
- 11:18very rarely would I ever rate a beer under 3.25.
- 11:22And if, and if I, I've got to the point now that if I don't
- 11:25like a beer, if I'm rating it like a 3.5 O, that's, that's as
- 11:30low as I'm probably going to go, because it may not be, it may
- 11:33not be my style of beer, but I don't, I don't want to crap on
- 11:37on the beer industry as a whole, you know, just because, I mean,
- 11:41I don't like, you know, I like IP as I don't like grapefruit.
- 11:45If it's like a a total grapefruit IPA.
- 11:47I'm, I've never liked grapefruit in my life.
- 11:49So if I try 1 and I don't like it, well, it's kind of stupid to
- 11:54get on there and go, Oh, this thing is A1 because I don't like
- 11:56grapefruit IPA. Well, that's kind of ignorant.
- 11:59So I, I wrote, I wrote down a note for this episode and I and
- 12:04I said maybe we need to come up with an app called the Common
- 12:09Sense Beer Rating app. What do you guys think?
- 12:14How would you how would you vet those people that get on that
- 12:17app or just. You know, like common.
- 12:20Sense I don't know. I think, I think that I talked
- 12:23about it last week with, with Nick and, and, and Dave that,
- 12:27you know, my problem with untapped is like, I'll use an
- 12:30example. I am not a fan of sours.
- 12:33I don't like them. I will never like them.
- 12:35I'm like the green eggs and ham. I don't care if you put them on
- 12:37a train, eat them in the rain on a boat.
- 12:39I, I don't care. But I had a mango sour one that
- 12:42I got in a beer trade and it was put like mango sour Margarita.
- 12:45It was everything that it was supposed to be.
- 12:49It tasted like a mango sour Margarita.
- 12:52I think I put it on untapped as A5 'cause it was everything that
- 12:56it was supposed to be. The last thing I was going to do
- 12:59was going to go in there and give it a one 'cause I don't
- 13:01freaking like, no, it's exactly what the brewery intended it to
- 13:04be and they nailed it. I literally at one point forgot
- 13:07I was drinking a beer and thought I was drinking a
- 13:09Margarita 'cause it was. I don't like, I don't like
- 13:13sours. I'm not big into porters and
- 13:15stouts but I drink them and if it's good I'll give it a 5
- 13:19because it's exactly what the brewery intended.
- 13:21That's my problem with Untapped. It's allowed people to go on
- 13:26this app and bash a brewery all because they don't like the
- 13:31beer. But the beer is everything that
- 13:34beer is supposed to be. Yeah.
- 13:36So I don't be personally. I have all but abandoned,
- 13:39untapped. I haven't posted.
- 13:42I just don't do it anymore. All my stuff's on Instagram
- 13:45because I just got tired of seeing people going on and doing
- 13:48like ones and twos. And then you read it and then
- 13:51you go out and and I find the bee here and I drink and I'm
- 13:54like, this is everything the label says it's supposed to be.
- 13:57Why are you giving it a 2.5? Because you don't like?
- 14:00It yeah, you have those dopes out there and you just can't you
- 14:04can't do anything about them, you know, and you know, and and
- 14:07it's funny when we started this podcast, I never thought about
- 14:10it from that viewpoint. I never thought about it from
- 14:13the and I and I was, I don't never bash anybody.
- 14:15I mean, shit on some Bud Light or something, but they don't
- 14:18care. But I would never bash anybody
- 14:21like that. But but I never understood that
- 14:23point or never realized that point until we started talking
- 14:26to Brewers and we started bringing up untapped and we're
- 14:28like, oh shit, there's a whole nother side of this.
- 14:30You know, Sierra Nevada might not care.
- 14:32New Belgium might not care. The guy down the street cares.
- 14:36Yeah, right. You know, your local guy cares.
- 14:38You know, I mean, that's, that's, that's getting people,
- 14:41whether that, you know, people come or go to the brewery or
- 14:43not. Well, that's the thing that
- 14:45people, people go on this app and they look and, and like Nick
- 14:49said, you walk into a brewery and everybody is on their phone.
- 14:53Put your phone down, get a flight, talk to the person in
- 14:55front of you. Drink beer.
- 14:58Right. Just put put your phone down and
- 15:00drink the freaking beer. Yeah, right.
- 15:03I mean, now I'm guilty of it. You guys have seen it.
- 15:06I will take a picture of it because it's a beautiful thing
- 15:08in a glass. Gorgeous, right.
- 15:11But put your phones down, drink the beer, talk to the people
- 15:14across from you. Yeah.
- 15:15Go up and talk to the Brewer. We want to talk about the beer.
- 15:18We want to talk about it all day long to the point where you'll
- 15:21get tired of talking to us. We want to talk about our beer.
- 15:25I, I will go back and get you samples out of the tank if you
- 15:28want to let you try it. Yep.
- 15:31Yeah, Keith and Cooper have talked about that when you just
- 15:32start talking to him, like, yeah, I got something back here.
- 15:36Yeah. Put your phone away and go talk
- 15:39to someone. Yeah, Yeah.
- 15:40Joe, you're in, you're in the business.
- 15:41You're on that side of the of the of the bar, right?
- 15:44Yes, we want to be. We want to talk to you.
- 15:46Yeah, to me, I love talking to you about the beer we have on
- 15:49tap. I will give you endless samples.
- 15:51I don't care. Take pictures, whatever, but
- 15:54don't talk to me while you're looking at your phone.
- 15:57I'm going to walk away. Yeah.
- 15:59Oh, I get that completely a lot of times when I walk.
- 16:01And Scott and I talk about this all the time.
- 16:03We were actually when we had the foamy heads on last week from
- 16:07here in Nashville talking about we go into breweries and stuff
- 16:10and maybe we're going to take some, you know, pictures from
- 16:13Instagram or whatever. I'm like, yeah, when I get into
- 16:15a brewery, I've got to take pictures right away when I walk
- 16:18in because otherwise I'm consumed with the conversation.
- 16:22I'm consumed with. I'm consumed by the beer.
- 16:24When I walk in, I probably pull up my untapped app to look at
- 16:28the board to see, have I had this beer before?
- 16:31And then after that, the phone, the phone basically is going
- 16:34away. I mean, sometimes I wait till
- 16:35the next day before I even rate my beer because, yeah, you get,
- 16:39you know, you're there to have a good time.
- 16:40And as you said, Joe, you know, you want to sit there and talk
- 16:43to, you know, other people and talk to good guys like Nick over
- 16:47here who is drinking, is drinking beer constantly.
- 16:52We mean you mean walrus Nick if you saw social media.
- 16:55Tonight. Yeah, my post today.
- 16:59Cuckoo Kajoub there's. Something I wanted to, something
- 17:02I wanted to ask both of you guys.
- 17:03And this is funny. Yeah.
- 17:05Something I wanted to ask both of you guys.
- 17:07Joe, this seems an obvious question for you, so I'll ask
- 17:09Nick first is, you know, we know because, you know, people come
- 17:14into Nashville and they ask us, like, what breweries should you
- 17:16go to? You know, what are the best
- 17:18breweries, Nick, where you are, where you live in West Virginia?
- 17:22So if I'm going to come there or anybody that's listening to this
- 17:26podcast or going to listen to your podcast and they're saying
- 17:30I want to go to West Virginia into the area where Nick is.
- 17:33What are some of the breweries that you like to go to that you
- 17:36can recommend for people? So that's a tough question to
- 17:40answer. I, I can give you some breweries
- 17:41that I enjoy and some that I've physically been to, but
- 17:45breweries are kind of few and far between and West Virginia.
- 17:47So some of the beers that I like are from four or five hours
- 17:51away, just because everything is kind of on the outskirts of the
- 17:53state because we're, we're in between so many different
- 17:55places. But the one closest to me that
- 17:57I, that I really enjoy is a place called high ground
- 18:00brewing. It's in, in the Terra Alta WV,
- 18:03which is middle of nowhere, but they make some, some phenomenal
- 18:07beer. It's literally one of those
- 18:08places that you drive across the set of train tracks and there's
- 18:11like a little barn style building back there and has a
- 18:15big like American traditional eagle painted on the side of it
- 18:20just like a, like a tattoo. And you walk in and you know it.
- 18:24It's just a, a concrete floor, a wooden bar, but some of the best
- 18:28beer that I've had in the state. It's all veteran and that's
- 18:30where the high ground name comes from.
- 18:32And they make a little bit of everything from Ipas to pilsners
- 18:36to loggers and stouts. And it, it, it's probably one of
- 18:40my favorite places to go in person.
- 18:42And then another one would be Big Timber is in Elkins, WV.
- 18:45That's probably the, the biggest brewery in the state in terms of
- 18:49the beer that they put out and their, their distribution and
- 18:52everything. You know, they're a West
- 18:53Virginia staple and you kind of see them a little bit of
- 18:55everywhere that you go. And then in terms of places that
- 18:58I haven't been, but I would like to as a place called Parkersburg
- 19:01Brewing, which is on the western side of the state, like right on
- 19:04the Ohio border, they're turning out some phenomenal beers and
- 19:08they're great people. I've talked to their head Brewer
- 19:11several times at beer festivals and stuff like that.
- 19:13And he's just what Joe was explaining.
- 19:15He's one of those that he just loves to talk about his beer as
- 19:18soon as you walk up, tells you character profiles, ingredients,
- 19:23all that kind of stuff that 95% of the people that are at those
- 19:26festivals have no idea what he's saying.
- 19:29But he loves it so much and he just wants you to enjoy his
- 19:32beer. He wants to explain it to you.
- 19:34And I think for me personally, that goes a long way in getting
- 19:37you interested in a place's beer because they have that passion
- 19:41that they wanna talk to you about it.
- 19:42And everywhere that I've been that he's been at, he has that
- 19:46same amount of enthusiasm. And it just makes you wanna try
- 19:48the beer. And then you try the beer and
- 19:50it's phenomenal. It's everything he says it is.
- 19:52If I could piggyback on that with your geography, Nick,
- 19:55you're close to many other states too, right?
- 19:57You got Maryland right there. You said you're close.
- 19:59So what are the better states to get beer to take home from based
- 20:03on your proximity? Most of my beer the the beer
- 20:06store that I go to is in Virginia, that that's where I
- 20:08get the the biggest variety of it.
- 20:10Maryland gets a decent amount and there's there's a a beer
- 20:15store about an hour and a half away from me that has a solid
- 20:19selection. I don't get to it nearly as
- 20:20often as I do in Virginia, but you know, either Maryland or
- 20:24Virginia is probably the easier of the two.
- 20:26Pennsylvania has some stricter alcohol laws, so you have to go
- 20:29to like an ABC store most of the time to get something like that.
- 20:32And I don't go to Pennsylvania a whole whole lot.
- 20:35So Virginia and Maryland are the easier ones.
- 20:38West Virginia you can get some stuff, but most of it is if it's
- 20:41not West Virginia beer locally, it's your typical, I don't want
- 20:45to say domestic, your typical commercial craft beer.
- 20:48So you're occasional your Sierra Nevadas, your Sam Adams, your
- 20:51Blue moons, that you know, that kind of stuff.
- 20:54And then Joe, how about you? Because I, you know, I obviously
- 20:56Hawaii's different, but I, I kind of wondered when, you know,
- 21:01when I was thinking about, you know, the craft beer experience
- 21:04in Hawaii. I know a lot of people,
- 21:07obviously when they're coming to Hawaii to visit, there's maybe
- 21:10not thinking necessarily about craft beer because they got
- 21:12other things on their mind. But do you find a lot of people
- 21:15that are coming there too, they want to try that craft beer
- 21:18experience, or is it more locals that that are into it?
- 21:22Well, I can tell you what real quick I want to give a shout out
- 21:24to another brewery in West Virginia that I'm a big fan of
- 21:27and Nick made me a fan of them, Greenbrier Valley Brewing
- 21:30Company. Nick sent me a Devil Ants IPA
- 21:33and a malt and Black IPA, two of the best beers I've ever had.
- 21:36Greenbrier Valley Brewing is another one in West Virginia
- 21:39that I highly recommend. I wish they would have been
- 21:41there when I still lived there. But I'm sorry, Greenbrier, I
- 21:45love you. I got you, brother.
- 21:50Don't worry about it. So you know, people come to
- 21:54Hawaii, they're going to get inundated with Kona Brewing and
- 21:56Maui brewing. There's nothing wrong with that.
- 21:59Those beers are absolutely fantastic.
- 22:01And that's what you know. Kona's got the great marketing
- 22:05with the two brothers talking about big wave and longboard and
- 22:08all that. And if you've ever had a Maui
- 22:11Big Swell IPA, I've never had a bad one.
- 22:14It's a fantastic West Coast IPA. You know, Bikini Blonde is made
- 22:18with like, you know, local Hawaiian cane sugar.
- 22:21But you know, the craft beer craze in Hawaii, it's been slow.
- 22:26Usually we're six months behind the mainland when it comes to
- 22:29stuff, but we've had such an influx of people opening
- 22:34breweries here and I, and I would expect you guys would
- 22:37think the best beer here is who I work for, the best brewery in
- 22:40Hawaii, and I can't talk enough good things about them.
- 22:42Hanukkah or brewing. Nick got some beer from them.
- 22:45Those guys over there brew some of the best beer on the island.
- 22:49They keep their tap list rotation fresh.
- 22:52They have like 4-5 six core beers.
- 22:55They release a new beer like every other Friday, their West
- 22:58Coast IPA, slap their sours. It's a fantastic brewery and you
- 23:03can't get it anywhere but here on the island.
- 23:05They don't ship to the mainland. Beer Works is another one.
- 23:09They close their initial location, they're reopening
- 23:12somebody else, somewhere else with a bigger capacity.
- 23:15Honolulu Beer Works, their Hop Island IPA, their Coco Vicin,
- 23:19their El Guapo with cilantro Lima Agave is absolutely
- 23:22amazing. Inu Allendale's, you know, Local
- 23:26high Brewing, there's so many other little breweries that are
- 23:28opening that people are starting to realize now that there's more
- 23:32out there than Kona and Maui just because those two are in
- 23:35all the stores. And again, in no way would I
- 23:38ever say anything bad about either of those.
- 23:40I love their beer. It's absolutely amazing.
- 23:43I know the owners, I know the reps the beer is amazing.
- 23:46But craft beer here in Hawaii, it's grown to the point where
- 23:50not only do we have local beer, but then we have local bottle
- 23:54shop named Village Beer. We got one downtown and one out
- 23:56here in Kapolei where they bring in everything from the mainland.
- 24:00Like now we can get Weld Works and Gigantic and Great Northern
- 24:04and, and Great Notion and all these other ones we could never
- 24:06get before. And I don't know how Tim and his
- 24:09crew does it. He brings in stuff that nobody
- 24:11else can bring in. And they're starting to be this
- 24:14movement now. And you can see it in the beer
- 24:17festivals. Couple years ago, the beer
- 24:19festivals were mildly attended, not crowded.
- 24:23Now, by the end of the festival, you can't even move around on
- 24:27the fairground anymore. It is packed.
- 24:30So it's got some momentum now. And when people come down here
- 24:33to the island, the first thing I get asked when they come out to
- 24:36where I work, this beer is good. What other places do you
- 24:39recommend? Yeah, Yeah.
- 24:41I don't say Kona and Maui Brewing.
- 24:43I say Hanukkah, Enu beer work. Go down and try these breweries
- 24:47downtown. That's local beer.
- 24:49You can't get their beer anywhere else and and that's
- 24:51what I tell people. And I, and I love that because
- 24:55we've talked about this many times and if you can get an area
- 24:58that's got multiple breweries in it, they don't have to be
- 25:00walking distance, but if you can hit a little area, you know you
- 25:03can hit 3 or 4. That's a day, man.
- 25:05And it's to go out to 1 is a little difficult.
- 25:07Sometimes I go out there or spend all day, but if I can hit
- 25:103 or 4, now we're on a little adventure.
- 25:13Yeah. They're my favorite trips, and
- 25:16you just line them up and you're like boom, boom, boom, boom,
- 25:19yeah. Yeah, when you go out of town,
- 25:20it's like, OK, this one's proximity, this one and this
- 25:23one's proximity. So we can do this and now we can
- 25:24go. Got to get some food I guess
- 25:26apparently, and then we can stop drinking for a minute and then
- 25:29we go back to drinking again. Love the one, love the ones that
- 25:34are walking distance. If you can walk to them, you
- 25:37know. Unless you have to stumble, then
- 25:39you know. I mean, yeah, as long as you can
- 25:42stumble safely, it's fine. Yeah, exactly.
- 25:44That's. Right.
- 25:45With the with the time difference between you guys
- 25:48obviously again West Virginia, East Coast, Hawaii was that
- 25:51Pacific Time? No, that's not even Pacific
- 25:53Time, is it? Hawaii has its own time zone.
- 25:56We are all on our own out here. OK, that's awesome.
- 25:59How do you guys record and how do you guys schedule things with
- 26:03with those hours with those differences in the time zones?
- 26:07Very carefully. So our recording schedule
- 26:09usually goes based off of Joe's work schedule because it's, it's
- 26:13obviously it's easier for Joe to record on days that he is off
- 26:16because regardless, it's usually the evenings whenever I'm home
- 26:19from work that we're able to record because of that time
- 26:21difference. So for him it, it's easier to
- 26:23record whenever he doesn't have to go into work.
- 26:25So for example, there's a six hour difference between Joe and
- 26:28myself. So a lot of times we will record
- 26:31at 6:00 PM Eastern Time on a Wednesday, whereas it's
- 26:35lunchtime for Joe. So you know, it can definitely
- 26:39get complicated if we ever have to venture outside of that.
- 26:42And we we've had to what once, Joe, that we've had to go off
- 26:45course. We had to go outside of that one
- 26:48time. We got to do it again next week.
- 26:50Our interview you we having like it's 9:00 my time and you got to
- 26:53get off work or to get home. But yeah, it's one of those
- 26:56things where, you know, it, unfortunately it works around my
- 27:00schedule because I've gone from one schedule one week to
- 27:04another. And Nick's really good about
- 27:05adapting to that. It's just the way it's got to be
- 27:07working in the industry. It's kind of like schedule comes
- 27:11out every week. It's like I roll the dice or my
- 27:12days off going to be the same. But Nick is real good.
- 27:15But I do most of the scheduling and I'm well aware of our time
- 27:19differences. And so I always try to get
- 27:22people to record noon my time because I don't, on days I go
- 27:26into work, I don't go in till 3:30.
- 27:28So we can still record before I go into work.
- 27:31And that's 6:00 next time. He's already home, he's already
- 27:35relaxed, got changed out, showered, whatever.
- 27:37You know, we can do it that way. Sometimes, like next week, it's
- 27:429:00 AM my time and Nick's got to leave early to come home
- 27:45because that's the only time we can get this person in.
- 27:48But these are the only two times we've ever had to kind of go
- 27:50outside of the box of our normal recording schedule.
- 27:53OK. Yeah, yeah, a lot of that's
- 27:56depending on the guests too. You know, if we have someone
- 27:58that's, you know, East Coast time, it's not really a big
- 28:01deal. If we have someone that's,
- 28:02that's Joe's time, it's definitely not a big deal.
- 28:04But when we start to run into those like mountain western time
- 28:07zones to where they're like smack dab in the middle of both
- 28:11of us to where it's evening for me, it's lunch for Joe and they
- 28:14still have like 2 hours left in their work day.
- 28:17You know, that, that, that's when it gets a little dicey.
- 28:19But we, you know, we, Joe and I get along just fine.
- 28:22You know, and, and it's something like, like we said
- 28:25earlier, you know, we don't want this to seem like a job either.
- 28:28So we don't stress about it. And then when we can fit people
- 28:30in, we fit them in. And when we can't, we can't.
- 28:32And what, you know, we move into another week or we, we move our
- 28:36schedules around or whatever we got to do.
- 28:38But and I'm sure we'll come across more hurdles as we go,
- 28:41but but so far everything's been fairly simple to arrange despite
- 28:44the the six hour difference. That's great.
- 28:47We haven't had to make those kind of accommodations.
- 28:49We've done. The earliest we've done is we've
- 28:50done like 3:00 PM Somebody had to do a different time zone,
- 28:53like 3:00 PM But Steve's done about 3 and I just leave early
- 28:57and we'll just do it at 3:00. Yeah.
- 28:59So we'll just do it. You wanna do it at 3:00?
- 29:01We'll do it at three, Yeah. Yeah, yeah, that's your bad.
- 29:04Yeah. But mostly, mostly, it's about
- 29:06this run, this time for us. And really, time, you know, time
- 29:09is just a number for us because there's also times on the
- 29:11weekends to where me and Joe get the bright idea that we're going
- 29:14to drink when he gets off work. So Joe's getting home at 2:00 AM
- 29:18Hawaii time and it's 7-8 o'clock over here and I'm pounding beer
- 29:23and I'm half, I'm half lit by 10:30.
- 29:26And over there, he's just ready to go to bed, so.
- 29:31He pounds them and goes to sleep.
- 29:32You pound them. Have to figure out the day,
- 29:34right? Right, you guys gotta join us
- 29:36for one of those. That's a great time.
- 29:37Got to do it. Can I have a little interjection
- 29:39here from our podcast? Yes.
- 29:42All right, Joe, Steve and Scott, can I tell you a fun fact?
- 29:46Yes, please. Yes.
- 29:48All. Right, we're getting Steve.
- 29:50We're being, we're being invaded.
- 29:52You are. You're being invaded about from
- 29:54the beer podcast about nothing. Did you guys know that at one
- 29:58point a French pig was executed for killing a child?
- 30:01What did the child do to deserve it?
- 30:03So that's a fair question. A pig from the Middle Ages was
- 30:07once tied to a crime involving a murder.
- 30:10The pig was said to have come in contact with a child's face
- 30:12which caused complications due to the injuries which led to the
- 30:15untimely death of a three month old child.
- 30:18The pig was eventually sent to jail and eventually publicly
- 30:21executed. Wow, the hotel.
- 30:23The whole town had had a great breakfast.
- 30:28I miss that in History class. I just put, I just put a fast
- 30:33one on Joe because usually that's his thing.
- 30:37OK, wait, wait, wait, wait. Back up.
- 30:41Did you say the pig got arrested?
- 30:44Yes, the pig was arrested and sent to jail and then publicly
- 30:48executed. I never thought the French had
- 30:50his sense of humor. I.
- 30:51Love it, selling it. So why do we not learn about
- 30:56that in history class growing up?
- 30:58Right, that's why our podcast exists.
- 31:01I know. He put him in jail.
- 31:06That that's when I had a hard time wrapping my head around.
- 31:10They rested the pig. And put it, just take him out
- 31:13and just slaughter him to be done with it.
- 31:15Yeah. Have bacon the next morning.
- 31:18Put him in jail. Did they put him on trial too?
- 31:20What was there like a hearing? I don't know.
- 31:22And also I'm assuming this was like medieval times so that they
- 31:25put him like a guillotine. You know, like, what kind of
- 31:28public execution are we? Did they hang him?
- 31:30Hope. That.
- 31:31They were all the town people invited to watch.
- 31:34I don't know, did they make bacon afterwards?
- 31:36You got to make bacon afterwards.
- 31:37I mean, don't waste anything on a pig.
- 31:38Right. I mean, it is, it doesn't make
- 31:41sense, but I don't know. I hope, I hope, I hope he didn't
- 31:44die in vain. The Townie.
- 31:51Oh, and we have regressed. Yeah, well.
- 31:54Well done, Sir. We've been well done, been
- 31:57invaded, Steve. We've been invaded.
- 32:01We had to bring, we had to bring part of it over.
- 32:04I like the random fun facts so. Far that's pretty good.
- 32:10Hey, by the way, I don't know if it was ever part of the podcast,
- 32:14but you guys did a drunk dance party and was that just for
- 32:16Instagram or what? But it was that part of the
- 32:18podcast. That that was that was part of
- 32:21those two AM, 7:00 AM drinking days.
- 32:24So it was like 10:00 AM here, 5:00 AM Joe's time, and we were
- 32:28just drunk and wild at that point.
- 32:31Could we bring it back? I got home like 2:00 in the
- 32:36morning. Been a long day and I was like 5
- 32:39Wookie Jack Rye Ipas in by that time and Nick's like you want to
- 32:43do is I'm like, yeah, that's how that came about.
- 32:45We have another one that he hasn't posted yet.
- 32:47We've done two of them. We're going to need to see that
- 32:49I like. It Yeah, there's a second one
- 32:51out there. I forgot about it and I I came
- 32:54across on your social media and I was like, oh, the drunk dance
- 32:57party. Maybe that don't you guys think
- 33:01since I'm doing a a summer tour, that Scott that needs to do a
- 33:06summer tour, maybe like a dance party, maybe the the Scott
- 33:10summer tour dance party. What do you guys think?
- 33:13I think we need to, yeah, yeah. I like it.
- 33:15I mean, I did Celters Insiders last year.
- 33:18I actually paid for Celters Insiders last year for the
- 33:21podcast. This year I'm doing West Coast
- 33:23Ipas. Scott got to step up for the
- 33:26podcast, buddy. Do I go to strip club to strip
- 33:29club is that? To be older?
- 33:30No. Whatever you want to do, maybe
- 33:32we'll auction you off. What?
- 33:33Kind of dancing are we talking about?
- 33:36I don't know, maybe, maybe Nick and Joe, since they're they're
- 33:39the dance number guys, maybe they could create a dance for
- 33:41you or something. I mean, I can dance right now.
- 33:44This isn't live, right? Like we're not recording.
- 33:46No, not at. All just three guys 4.
- 33:49Guys hanging out. Joe, you told me not to put on
- 33:51pants. This is embarrassing.
- 33:57Or just just another happy hour. It's a.
- 33:59Random happy hour. Yeah.
- 34:00That's what we should do. We should take one of our happy
- 34:02hours and do a whole drunk dance party with like all eight of us
- 34:05all. Right.
- 34:06If there's if there's seven other people doing, I might, I
- 34:08might move a little bit. I mean, it's, it's like 20
- 34:11seconds. That's fine.
- 34:11You don't even have just close your eyes and deal with me.
- 34:15Like, I don't know what I'm doing.
- 34:16I I just grabbed my drink and I put my head down and I'll do
- 34:19something like this. Yeah.
- 34:20You get a little music going, yeah.
- 34:22That's yeah, it's fine, surely. They're not looking at me,
- 34:24they're looking at the other seven people.
- 34:26That's right. I need to get, I need to get you
- 34:29guys like a little AI song that you can throw into your podcast
- 34:33somewhere. I do like your songs.
- 34:35I was. Listening to the words earlier
- 34:37today, I have. I have so many of them.
- 34:39Yeah, he does. Like it?
- 34:41I just went down a rabbit hole one day for like 6 hours and.
- 34:45It was a. It was a great time.
- 34:47Yeah, I cast, I listen to it. It rings in my head for like
- 34:50hours. It is about nothing.
- 34:53Yeah. Did his job.
- 34:56Hey, so you guys talked about earlier, you guys have never
- 34:58met. Oh, by the way, let me ask this
- 34:59question real quick before I get to that.
- 35:01Joe, how tall are you? Because I meant to ask that
- 35:04earlier and it's relevant, kind of.
- 35:06I am 6 foot 8 1/2. Pretty tall you you wouldn't be
- 35:10able to tell it from from this sitting down, but it still blows
- 35:14my mind. Hey Scott, how tall am I?
- 35:16I've 85656 by 55555. OK, all right.
- 35:23I actually have met you, so I don't remember.
- 35:25I was gonna say, you've seen me in person.
- 35:27We were drunk 80% of the time. Yes, you're a good hugging
- 35:32height. I hugged that on you quite a
- 35:33bit. Yeah, and but then my face is
- 35:36just in your belly button. Little dancing going on.
- 35:42I don't know see when when you're wondering about what to
- 35:44edit. Just kind of.
- 35:45Write stop recording at this point.
- 35:49Why, I thought, are we, are we not going that deep?
- 35:52I don't care. That's why you leave it up
- 35:53there. Just.
- 35:54Throw away. I don't know you can you know
- 35:56I'm not having anything other than me.
- 36:00We. We might offend some other beer
- 36:03Instagramers. Yeah, we don't want to do that.
- 36:06We don't want to offend the. We don't want to offend the beer
- 36:09drinkers of the world. But.
- 36:12You guys haven't met in person, but you guys are going to meet
- 36:15in San Diego here what in May, right?
- 36:17What are the some of the things you guys are going to do?
- 36:20We're going to meet over Memorial Day weekend, like the
- 36:22Thursday to Monday, and it'd be the first time that Nick and I
- 36:24have ever met in person. But you know, doing the happy
- 36:27hours and doing the podcast, him and Ashley become part of our
- 36:30family, like what we call here in Hawaii, Ohana.
- 36:33They're definitely ohana. So it's not like when I meet
- 36:35Nick, it's going to be awkward or whatever.
- 36:37I've already know everything about him, about Ashley, about
- 36:40the dogs and all that. But we have 345 days of nothing
- 36:44but breweries and shenanigans planned.
- 36:46And, and, and, and I asked Nick, I said, Are you sure that Ashley
- 36:51is ready for this? Because, you know, my wife knows
- 36:53we're going to San Diego. But I mean, is she really ready
- 36:56for what him and I are going to do when we're there?
- 36:59Because we're we're staying somewhere, said Nick.
- 37:02How many breweries are within walking distance to where we're
- 37:05staying? Like 25.
- 37:07Nice. You have it all mapped out kind
- 37:09of where you're going or is it just going to be like a day to?
- 37:11Day So so I sat down to do that a couple weekends ago and I
- 37:14brought up the map, stared at it for about 20 minutes and I
- 37:17closed my laptop because it it was just overwhelming.
- 37:21And then like just trying to, because my, my plan was, you
- 37:24know, where our, where our Airbnb is at, You know, there,
- 37:28there's so many breweries S there's so many N there's so
- 37:30many to the West. So I'm going to be like, OK, if
- 37:33we, if we go, if we just go straight N, you know, we got X
- 37:37minutes from the house to here. And then we got X minutes from
- 37:39this brewery to this brewery. And there's just so much there
- 37:43that I'm just like, Oh my God, I, I don't have the mental
- 37:45capacity to do this. But before we get there, like,
- 37:48yes, I would like to map it out, but you know, there's enough
- 37:51options too that if we eventually just walk One
- 37:54Direction, we're going to run into something somewhere.
- 37:57Yeah, or or find if somebody's got like a key place they want
- 38:00to go to. Hey, let's we got to make make
- 38:02sure we hit these spots and we can just fill in the rest kind
- 38:04of thing too. Right, yeah, we, we have, you
- 38:07know, a handful of places that are that are must stops.
- 38:09So, you know, I'm sure it'll come down as as well to all
- 38:13right, what is around that area to where we can go here, here,
- 38:17here, here. And then we've had a couple
- 38:19suggestions from some other enthusiasts too that have said,
- 38:23OK, you got you got to hit here, you got to hit here, you got to
- 38:26hit here. So that's helped too.
- 38:28So, you know, between Thursday afternoon and and Sunday night
- 38:33before you fly out on Monday, we're we're going to, we're
- 38:35going to make our mark on San Diego.
- 38:37Yeah. Yeah, no doubt you're.
- 38:39Coming for you, San Diego. Yeah.
- 38:40They're coming for you. Be ready.
- 38:42Do they have White Castles out that way or they just over here
- 38:45stop it? They have Sonic which is just as
- 38:48bad. Hey Steve, can you mute him?
- 38:55That would bring it out that that we get it out that we're
- 38:57going to add it out. Back in kind of like like
- 39:00downtown San Diego, but we are going to venture up north a
- 39:03little bit like we're going to put obviously we're going to
- 39:05make the pilgrimage to Stone, obviously.
- 39:08Yeah, Black Plague Brewing, there's Belching Beaver there.
- 39:11Those are three most things we have to do.
- 39:13But when Nick and I first started talking about this, we
- 39:16originally going to go somewhere else and decided on San Diego.
- 39:18And when he sent me the address of where we're staying, I went
- 39:21and punched it up and I'm like, we don't even need to drive
- 39:25anywhere, like at all. And I don't know if that's a
- 39:28good thing or a bad thing, to be honest with.
- 39:31You. And I mean that that was kind of
- 39:33like whenever I was trying to find a place to stay, like
- 39:35obviously I wanted to be near breweries, but I don't think I
- 39:39knew San Diego was a, a big area for beer.
- 39:42I didn't know it was that big. And whenever it came down to it
- 39:46and I started looking up Airbnbs and stuff like that.
- 39:49And then I brought up some sites about San Diego breweries.
- 39:53There's so many that they have like neighborhoods for
- 39:56breweries. Nice to, to where like, OK, you,
- 39:59you know, you got. So we're staying near 30th St.
- 40:02and 30th St. has 2025 breweries within 10 blocks.
- 40:07You know something like that, which is wild to me.
- 40:09Yeah, that's ideal. Right.
- 40:11So that's where we're actually staying at.
- 40:13But then there's like a coastal section that has another 15 to
- 40:1720 and then the northern section has like 20 to 30.
- 40:21You know, they're a little more spread out, but they're still
- 40:24all up there. And I'm like, this is impossible
- 40:26to pick like a perfect spot. So 30th Street, where we're
- 40:30going, it seems to be there's some, there's a bunch of
- 40:32breweries, but there's also a lot of tap rooms to where places
- 40:36that are not just San Diego, but California just have a bunch of
- 40:39tap rooms that you can go in at least still have their beer, so.
- 40:42Yeah, you might not make it to the brewery, but you could have
- 40:45their beer all under one roof. And how many days are you doing
- 40:48this for Nick? We're doing it Thursday to,
- 40:52we're flying in Thursday, flying out Monday, so basically
- 40:55Thursday afternoon to Sunday evening we have.
- 40:57Free so there will be no sleeping or any of those
- 40:59breweries open in like you know 4 it doesn't matter you know
- 41:02just think of your back and there's not going to be any
- 41:04sleep going on you're. Just going to be it doesn't
- 41:06matter. It's just going to be be beer, a
- 41:07couple naps here and there with some coffee in the morning and
- 41:10then and back to the beer. Have you checked?
- 41:12Out the breweries that have brunch, that's always.
- 41:15Important. It is definitely on our list.
- 41:18So I've got a, I've got kind of a random question for you, but
- 41:21we get a lot of when the seasons change, beer when the seasons
- 41:24change, and I'm going to pick on Sam Adams for a minute, but some
- 41:28rail is already out in March, right?
- 41:31Oktoberfest comes out in freaking August or whatever is
- 41:33it? Do you see that over there too?
- 41:36And I asked that because it's is it more delayed over there where
- 41:39you actually maybe get some of that seasonal stuff when the
- 41:41season actually is? Although you don't have many
- 41:43seasons over there either, do you?
- 41:45No, you know, over here it's pretty much 83° and sunny every
- 41:48day, somewhere every day. But but you know, like I said
- 41:52earlier, we're we're a couple months behind the main 1.
- 41:56So when you say that, you know, you get Sierra Nevada
- 41:59celebration like August or September down here, we don't
- 42:02get it until November. So it's we get it kind of at the
- 42:06time we're supposed to get. It when you're supposed.
- 42:08To know how they have it. But the local breweries here,
- 42:12you know, during the summer, they're starting to do sours
- 42:14now. They do the German Bach beers, a
- 42:17Hellesbach, a vice beer or Crystal Vice.
- 42:19They do those at the appropriate times.
- 42:21Nobody's jumped on the Oktoberfest train yet.
- 42:24I don't know why. I'm going to try to work on
- 42:26that. Yeah.
- 42:27Talk to my language brother. Yeah, absolutely.
- 42:30And Can you imagine an Oktoberfest on the beach?
- 42:33It would be insane. But no.
- 42:34So down here, those beers come out exactly when they're
- 42:39supposed to, like like Sam Adams Summer Ale.
- 42:41It won't even be on the shelves here until Memorial Day weekend.
- 42:45That's. Perfect.
- 42:46It's it's exactly how it should be.
- 42:48And that that's loud to me because I just had two summer
- 42:51ales like 2 weeks ago. Yeah, I haven't had any.
- 42:56Yeah, but I'm overdue. You know, I'm that guy that as
- 42:59soon as Sam Adams Oktoberfest comes out, I'm that guy the
- 43:02first day at the store ready to get it.
- 43:05And I don't care if it's the end of August, I'm getting it.
- 43:08You're coming home with the whole case of it.
- 43:10Yeah, yeah, just about. Yeah, but then you can get
- 43:13Winter Logger in October. Exactly.
- 43:16No thanks. So would you really wanted this?
- 43:18Not there. And I love summer ale.
- 43:20I like the Oktoberfest too. But summer?
- 43:21I love to see it, but fucking Zoom comes around in July.
- 43:24It's gone. Yeah.
- 43:26Like I'm drinking a summer ale and it's 25° outside.
- 43:29Yeah, yeah. Like, I don't.
- 43:30I don't. I don't.
- 43:31Get it? So I'm sorry, you said so.
- 43:34You said October, you don't get Oktoberfest there at all.
- 43:37No, we do. But it comes out like the end of
- 43:40August 1st, part of September. OK Yeah.
- 43:44All of our Sam Adams seasonals here, they come out within a
- 43:47week or two before the season. I mean, it's said to be summer
- 43:51here all the time. So it's kind of ridiculous, to
- 43:53be honest with you. But you know, it's it's it's 83°
- 43:57in June. It's 83° on Christmas Day.
- 43:59It doesn't change. But we still like to bring in
- 44:02the seasonal beers. But they hit exactly when
- 44:05they're supposed to. Like, it won't be a summer ale
- 44:08on the shelf before Memorial Day weekend, and you won't see it
- 44:11after August. It'll be gone.
- 44:13And then by that time, they'll be caring it out for the
- 44:15Oktoberfest. That'll be gone the middle of
- 44:17October. And then the winter fest kicks
- 44:19in and then around Thanksgiving they they put the Sam Adams
- 44:23Christmas pack with like the old Fezzywig L in it.
- 44:26That's what comes out. And then by January, that's
- 44:29gone. Yeah, we've laughed about that
- 44:31on on on our podcast as far as like when I know this year, when
- 44:37Sam Adams, Oktoberfest, when I saw it at a store here and I
- 44:40think it was like the end of August.
- 44:42And then I go in and I'm like, there's pumpkin, their pumpkin
- 44:46beer right next to it. And I'm like, no, come on now.
- 44:49No, that's. No, I know.
- 44:53And they always say it's, you know, they're fighting for shelf
- 44:56space and all that. I mean, just fight for it during
- 44:58the season that it actually is. What difference does it make?
- 45:03Like if your beer's good enough, it'll survive, right?
- 45:05Yes, Yeah. I get geography, like the
- 45:09Northeast is probably different than where we live.
- 45:10It's obviously different where, you know, where Joe lives out
- 45:13there in Hawaii. So seasons are different little
- 45:15bit, you know, gets hot here earlier.
- 45:16So, you know, in May it might be 90° and that might fit.
- 45:20But also in July, I still need that and it's gone.
- 45:24Yeah. I'm self admittedly I'm a little
- 45:26biased because I'm a big Oktoberfest guy and it could go
- 45:29on all year for me. However, I also understand that,
- 45:33you know, it shouldn't go on all year, even if it is for me.
- 45:38You'll change your mind once you develop your love for West Coast
- 45:41Ipas. There you go.
- 45:43There you go. Thank you, Sir.
- 45:46Thank you, Sir. Report back.
- 45:48I'm going on tour. Soon everybody TuneIn for ticket
- 45:52sales. No, no, Steve, I've got a little
- 45:54fact for you and you probably saw it on my stuff.
- 45:56And and Joe, if you've looked at Steve's background and his wall
- 46:00behind him, he's a Reds fan. Joe is a lifelong Reds fan, too.
- 46:04Steve, did you know that? I think you had told me that at
- 46:07some point. Well, I think I put.
- 46:09You probably read my note. We haven't talked about the Red.
- 46:13Joe Scott and I are going through the Reds up in in
- 46:16Cincinnati in May. Oh that, that's something I miss
- 46:19cuz, you know, growing up in West Virginia, we didn't have
- 46:21professional sports of any kind. We had family live in Cleveland.
- 46:25They were Cleveland Indians fan, but my dad was a lifelong Reds
- 46:28fan. Yeah.
- 46:29And we used to go up to Cincinnati for all the home
- 46:31games from when I was little, 5678 years old.
- 46:35Yep. Until he passed away when I was
- 46:369. And then I still stayed a Reds
- 46:38fan. I remember seeing Johnny Bench
- 46:41play, you know, and just the the Reds teams from yesteryear,
- 46:46which were really good. But I'm a lifelong Reds fan,
- 46:49Will never like any other baseball team, die hard Reds.
- 46:52I was born and raised, will never like anybody else.
- 46:55Well, you know Scott and I do every year and we've done this
- 46:59for probably 7 or 8 years. The back story on this, I'll
- 47:02give you it. So every year in May, my family
- 47:06and I, we get together and we do a Big Reds outing.
- 47:09The biggest reason for it is because my my older brother Mike
- 47:13passed away about 11 years ago. He and I were Big Reds fans.
- 47:17We used to go to games all the time and he had diabetes, passed
- 47:21away of a heart attack. After he died, my cousins and I
- 47:24got together and said, you know what, we need to have something
- 47:28every year in his honor. So we have a Reds outing every
- 47:31year in his honor, and we're doing it in May.
- 47:34Scott comes up for it. He never met my brother, but he
- 47:37comes up for it. He's been coming up for like 7
- 47:40or 8 years now and when he when he started coming, you know, we
- 47:45got in the crap beer together. We started going to breweries
- 47:48together and we've added days on top of not only do we do a
- 47:53couple of Reds games and the big outing for my brother, we also
- 47:57do a whole big thing of breweries every year.
- 47:59So it's a whole lot of fun. That sounds like fun.
- 48:02It's grown. Yeah, Pete Rose should be in the
- 48:06Hall of Fame. Yes, he should.
- 48:08Agreed. Agreed.
- 48:10That's awesome. Yeah, yeah, I'm honored to.
- 48:13Steve invites me every year and we get to go.
- 48:14But in this kind of how our whole thing started, we would
- 48:17leave breweries and be like, Hey, we should start a website,
- 48:20which we have, But and then it evolved to let's let's start
- 48:23some social media, let's do a podcast because of same thing as
- 48:26you guys, we're experiencing all these beers and we're drinking
- 48:29all these beers. We need to.
- 48:30We need another outlet. Yeah, I think, I think the
- 48:33first, I think the first time that we did like the Reds and
- 48:37brewery outing up there, it was maybe like 3 days because
- 48:41Cincinnati has a great brewery scene.
- 48:44And so we went up there and it was maybe like go up on a
- 48:46Friday, come back on a Sunday or Monday.
- 48:49And then after about two years, I said, you know what, we need
- 48:52to add like another day. So we keep adding days.
- 48:55And this year we've added how many more days, Scott?
- 48:58Is it 7-8? And in two additional cities.
- 49:03Yeah. Now, like this year, we're going
- 49:04to Snoopinati, we're going to Columbus, and we're also going
- 49:07to Cleveland. Let me know when you guys go,
- 49:09maybe actually can I and I can come meet you guys one time.
- 49:12Yeah, yeah, definitely. Especially cause Cleveland is
- 49:15probably closest to you right of those cities.
- 49:18Yeah, Cleveland probably, if I had to guess, 4 hours maybe.
- 49:22Okay, I know Columbus is 4 hours.
- 49:24I'm not sure how much further Cleveland is or how much
- 49:26shorter, but but yeah. But yeah, going back to that,
- 49:28Joe, I'm a diehard Reds fan, as you can see, and Finn went all
- 49:32my life. I've probably have been to.
- 49:35I don't know if I had to count how many baseball games, Reds
- 49:37games I've been to in my life, it's probably been about 200.
- 49:40Yeah, no, that, that's the same way I remember getting in the,
- 49:42you know, big old Buick Skylark with Finns on the back with my
- 49:45dad when I was 6 and driving to Cincinnati and watching the
- 49:49games and staying overnight and coming back.
- 49:50And then when I was stationed in Miami, they come down there and
- 49:53play the Marlins military, get free tickets, go see the Reds
- 49:56play the Marlins. Sometimes they win, sometime
- 49:58they didn't. It's just one of those teams
- 50:00that I just kind of latched onto through my dad and I'm just a
- 50:03die hard Reds fan. I, I, I love the Cincinnati Reds
- 50:06and you know, we've had up and down years and, but it's just
- 50:10the whole it, it doesn't matter. It's the whole experience of
- 50:13being a Red fan. And if you've ever been to the
- 50:15stadium or ever seen him play, it's just that whole it's like,
- 50:19wow, I get to see my team play finally, you know?
- 50:21Yeah. Yeah, well, if you both of you
- 50:24guys, if you guys ever decide you're going to go, let me know.
- 50:27I'd I'd love to join you up there because it's a fun time.
- 50:30Nick, are you a baseball guy at all?
- 50:31I love baseball. It's my favorite.
- 50:33You're you an Orioles fan? Do I remember?
- 50:35Yeah, yeah, yeah. AL East baby, right here, you
- 50:39and I. It's it's been tough living for
- 50:41Orioles fans last. 30 years, you guys.
- 50:43You. Yeah, but you guys?
- 50:44Have a good team. We're getting.
- 50:45We're getting there. We're getting there.
- 50:46Yeah, you guys, I'll drop being a Red fan.
- 50:48Come on. Tell me about it.
- 50:51Yeah. Hey, Speaking of which, if you
- 50:54guys ever get tired of of Ellie De la Cruz over there, send them
- 50:57our way. Yeah, I'm thinking about, I
- 51:00think in 2029 when he becomes a free agent, he's probably
- 51:02heading to the Dodgers, probably.
- 51:05Yeah, I agree. They, they have no, no limit on
- 51:08their payroll right now. So.
- 51:10Exactly, Yeah. When you defer 650 million, you
- 51:14can do that. Yeah, it's going to catch him
- 51:16eventually. He could end up in the Bronx,
- 51:18Steve. You never know.
- 51:20You never know. I think Baltimore is better.
- 51:25Hey, by the way, are they still talking about kind of moving the
- 51:28the Orioles out of Baltimore? No, I wouldn't think.
- 51:31So whenever so they sold the team before last season and
- 51:37whenever they did that they signed like a 20 year contract
- 51:40with the stadium. OK, I hate that.
- 51:41Like a storied franchise like that, you can't move those
- 51:44teams, man, because they've won a World Series.
- 51:46If they would have moved, they would have came to you guys.
- 51:49I know. So you could have, you could
- 51:52have got something there. I know maybe because that's the
- 51:55AL East, right? We could see the Yankees play,
- 51:57which is why you go to ball games and then.
- 51:59That's why that's why tickets are double when they're in town.
- 52:04We might be able to. Maybe we can get the Rays now
- 52:06since they backed out of their stadium thing down there in
- 52:08Tampa. There you go.
- 52:09Because they got destroyed, right?
- 52:11Like they're they're. Destroyed.
- 52:13Yeah. And then they had committed to
- 52:14the city about building a new stadium form, and then they've
- 52:17backed out of the deal about building the stadium.
- 52:19So about being the Rays don't want to be in that stadium.
- 52:22So I don't know what they're looking at.
- 52:23Maybe Nashville. We'll see.
- 52:25I mean, we love trying to get every NBA.
- 52:27They're trying to get into the NBA and.
- 52:29Look, you can you can take this NFL team out of here.
- 52:32If you want to put a baseball team in.
- 52:33I'm happy with that. Yeah, there's not much to sell
- 52:37there right now, naturally. Hey, by the way, let's build a
- 52:41brand new stadium at the same time.
- 52:43Dude, I don't fucking get it. Like we're we're like the lowest
- 52:47of lows and we're going to, we're going to buy a multi
- 52:49$1,000,000 stadium. Yep, I don't get it.
- 52:52Hey you want to buy some PP called PSL's for a shitty
- 52:57product? Yes.
- 52:58All all it is just get the Super Bowl here and against the.
- 53:02Lake, you can do that. Correct.
- 53:03That's what happens everywhere, right?
- 53:05Like they, they bring the Super Bowl in, they bring the draft in
- 53:08and all that, all that stuff. It just brings in revenue.
- 53:11I've got a few stats I want to run by you guys.
- 53:13All right, let me run these stats by.
- 53:15These are podcast stats, all right?
- 53:18Do you know that there are 4.19 million podcasts registered
- 53:21around the world? Wow, somebody came ready.
- 53:25Yeah, apparently anybody can do it though 'cause we all are.
- 53:28So alright, how about this? South Korea has the most podcast
- 53:35listeners in the world. Wow, get out of here.
- 53:39Yep, that's kind of surprising. Okay.
- 53:41Yep. Spain, Ireland and Sweden and
- 53:43the US. Yep.
- 53:43So we're gonna have to have some Korean guests on or we're gonna
- 53:45start speaking Koreans to try to get our listenership up.
- 53:49That'll be the summer tour for you, Scott.
- 53:51You can learn. Okay, I could do that.
- 53:54But now I'm kind of offended because I don't think South
- 53:57Korea's on our listener list. On my creators app it's.
- 54:00Not. We do have Russia on ours
- 54:01though. We picked up Russia.
- 54:02We got Russia. Yeah, we got Russia.
- 54:04You got Russia too you. Got Russia?
- 54:06Yep. I got two more, OK, podcast
- 54:09revenue market was expected to reach $4 billion globally in
- 54:132024. So like advertising and
- 54:15podcasting guys, we we got to get a piece of that somehow we
- 54:18got any warehouse like we do 4 billion. 4 billion.
- 54:22Do we do we need to merge? Is that?
- 54:24Is that what we got to do? We have to do that.
- 54:26You bring your advertisers, we'll bring ours.
- 54:29Does that mean since there's four of us, we're going to be
- 54:30doing a four hour podcast to? Break it up.
- 54:34Don't have? His he will.
- 54:35Have his Yep. Yeah, we'll have our own hour.
- 54:37Yeah, that's. What it is?
- 54:38Yeah, we'll. Be the We'll Be the Hop in
- 54:40Underground podcast. Hop in.
- 54:44We're drinking an underground podcast.
- 54:45Yeah, yeah. All right.
- 54:47One more and this is actually kind of cool.
- 54:49Only 1% of podcasts make it past 20 episodes, so you guys will
- 54:53certainly be there. And you guys have surpassed
- 54:56that. Well done.
- 54:57Thank you. We love 2 parters.
- 54:59Yeah. Anyway, something else I want to
- 55:02say as we close this thing out, man, you guys are doing more
- 55:05than just a podcast. And I think you guys realize
- 55:08that you've probably been told thank you by people in the, in
- 55:11the business or in the, in the industry as far as promoting
- 55:14breweries and craft beer as a whole.
- 55:17So you're doing more than just getting on the on the mics and
- 55:20talking about, you're promoting the industry.
- 55:22And I think I think it's a positive thing.
- 55:24And I think you'll hear a lot of thank you's from people you talk
- 55:27to for doing that. Well, yeah, we, we appreciate
- 55:30that and, and really we don't do, you know, none of us do it
- 55:33for that, right? We do it just to right to, to do
- 55:36it as a passion project essentially.
- 55:37But any kind, any type of awareness or recognition that we
- 55:41can bring along the way is, is just, you know, icing on the
- 55:44cake because we're, we're none of us are here for, for fame or
- 55:47money or, or anything like that. You know, we're just here to to
- 55:51talk about something that we love and we embrace and we all
- 55:54have a common interest in and hope, hope that it hits
- 55:56somewhere. Yeah, So what it is too is to to
- 55:59bring awareness to home brewing. We want to get people home
- 56:02brewing, you know, talked about the very beginning.
- 56:05Countertop systems are out there.
- 56:07You don't have to invest in a bunch of 3, four, $500 and $900
- 56:12glycol system or whatever. Just get into it.
- 56:14It's a, it's a great hobby. It's a great thing to be
- 56:18passionate about. You know, the best thing about
- 56:20it is the community that we have.
- 56:21It's the beer industry, the IG beer community.
- 56:24I say it all the time, the IG beer community rocks.
- 56:27We are, you know, I think Nick said it last week, we talked
- 56:30about with Dave that people go on there to make it appear like
- 56:33they're happy or their lives are the perfect thing.
- 56:35We get on there because we're the people that we say we are.
- 56:39Like I, I got home at 2:00 in the morning last night and
- 56:41almost crushed a 19.299 percent, 90 minute.
- 56:46That's who I am. Yeah, that's the only reason I
- 56:48did it. But get people into home
- 56:51brewing, get them passionate about beer.
- 56:53And I'm going to throw this out there.
- 56:54Hey Stone, if you want to sponsor Nick and I, please feel
- 56:57free to do it. Yes, please.
- 56:59Yes, yes, Stone. Do it, I'm bored.
- 57:04We found. Our dare.
- 57:06You union. On the ground floor of these.
- 57:08Guys. Because we, we really do love
- 57:11the podcast. Honestly, listen to every
- 57:13episode. You guys are doing a great
- 57:14thing. You're being yourselves.
- 57:16You got a passion for it. Look, and I said this many
- 57:19times, we're consumers. I think we're all beer consumers
- 57:22first. So that's kind of where our
- 57:24expertise comes from. But we just love it.
- 57:27We're going to we're going to continue to drink beer that we
- 57:28had these or not. Yeah, there you go.
- 57:30All right, Joe and Nick from the Hoppin Drinking podcast.
- 57:35We're a drinking podcast. Guys, thanks for being on.
- 57:39We appreciate you so much and I know we will see you guys soon.
- 57:43Absolutely. Thank you so much.
- 57:44We love you guys. Appreciate you guys too.
- 57:46Love you guys too. Cheers.
- 57:48Cheers. From the Brewery Underground
- 57:49podcast. Cheers, cheers, cheers, because
- 57:51it's never too. Much to handle.
- 57:56We're never too strong to go. Come on everybody, let's step.
- 58:06Drop, drop, drop. The.
