- 0:47Speaker 1: Welcome to today's edition of Reflection on the Word with
- 0:50Speaker 1: Richard K. I'm Chuck Christie, and today we are asking

- 0:56Speaker 1: us each day as Richard shares from God's work with notes, quotes,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and story along with some of his own personal experiences,
- 1:02Speaker 1: to confirm for you God's great love for us, that
- 1:05Speaker 1: his compassion for us never fails, and that He has
- 1:08Speaker 1: a great faithfulness toward us in every regard. Now, if
- 1:11Speaker 1: you miss a portion of today's broadcast or would like
- 1:13Speaker 1: to recommend it to a friend, you can hear this
- 1:16Speaker 1: program anytime online at Talknetwork Radio dot com. Well, now
- 1:21Speaker 1: here's Richard with today's reflection.
- 1:26Speaker 2: But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the
- 1:31Speaker 2: excellency of the power may be of God and not
- 1:35Speaker 2: of us. This is from Second currnth ends, chapter four
- 1:39Speaker 2: and verse seven. Another means of being able to describe
- 1:45Speaker 2: is a different version that was from the King James
- 1:48Speaker 2: version in the Holmes Christian Standard Bible. It says, now
- 1:54Speaker 2: we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this
- 1:59Speaker 2: extraordinary power may be from God and not from us.
- 2:05Speaker 2: But also in the fifth chapter Beginning with the first
- 2:10Speaker 2: verse of Second Corinthians, it says, for we know that
- 2:16Speaker 2: if our earthly house a tent, is destroyed, we have
- 2:21Speaker 2: a building from God, a house not made with hands,
- 2:26Speaker 2: eternal in the heavens. And in fact we've grown in
- 2:31Speaker 2: this one, longing to put on our house from heaven,
- 2:37Speaker 2: since when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. Indeed,
- 2:45Speaker 2: we who are in this tent grown burdened as we are,
- 2:50Speaker 2: because we do not want to be unclothed, but clothed
- 2:54Speaker 2: so that mortality may be swallowed up by life. And
- 2:59Speaker 2: the one who prepared us for this very thing is God,
- 3:05Speaker 2: who gave us the spirit as a down payment. Now
- 3:12Speaker 2: we have talked about the abiding spirit when we referred
- 3:19Speaker 2: to in a previous segment that we are one in
- 3:24Speaker 2: the spirit. That is actually the fulfillment of Jesus' own
- 3:30Speaker 2: prayer that he made in John seventeen. He said, on
- 3:35Speaker 2: that day you will know that I am in my Father,
- 3:42Speaker 2: and you are in me, and I am in you.
- 3:47Speaker 2: So all of this means that he takes up his
- 3:53Speaker 2: home in us. Now, when we read this previous ripture
- 4:00Speaker 2: in Second Corinthians, chapter four and verse seven, it compares
- 4:06Speaker 2: our earthly body to a vessel. We've talked about this
- 4:12Speaker 2: in The King James. It refers to it as an
- 4:15Speaker 2: earthen vessel, so it also refers to it in a
- 4:21Speaker 2: different form as clay jars. In other words, we are
- 4:27Speaker 2: a body that is formed by the elements of the earth,
- 4:31Speaker 2: and so this is a true description, but it is
- 4:36Speaker 2: not really us. We are only clothed in this particular
- 4:44Speaker 2: body referred to as a tent, meaning a place in
- 4:50Speaker 2: which we go inside. Well, if we look at this,
- 4:56Speaker 2: if the body is destroyed, is the spirit destroyed? Of
- 5:03Speaker 2: course not. The spirit transcends the earthly body. But there
- 5:10Speaker 2: will come a time when we will actually be clothed
- 5:16Speaker 2: with a glorified body, very much the same as the
- 5:23Speaker 2: body that Jesus had as a human, glorified after his resurrection.
- 5:33Speaker 2: But I think it's important for us to note that
- 5:37Speaker 2: this particular passage refers to the vessel earthen vessels. Remember
- 5:47Speaker 2: we've talked about being full of the spirit, we've talked
- 5:52Speaker 2: about overflowing into others. Well, here you have a more
- 6:00Speaker 2: vivid description, because let me ask you a question, if
- 6:05Speaker 2: we are compared to an earthen vessel, or, as this
- 6:11Speaker 2: version says a clay jar, what happens when the Spirit
- 6:19Speaker 2: overturns that vessel that he is flowing in, Well, obviously
- 6:28Speaker 2: his power will flow out and it will then penetrate
- 6:35Speaker 2: whoever is within its reach. And so that is the
- 6:43Speaker 2: means of being able to communicate the Gospel. Now, we've
- 6:49Speaker 2: talked about several passages in the Book of Acts where
- 6:57Speaker 2: we have seen the Gospel proclaimed and demonstrated. Each time
- 7:04Speaker 2: we have found that there has been an impact on
- 7:11Speaker 2: the individuals who are actually subjected to the infectious power
- 7:20Speaker 2: of the Holy Spirit. What does really happen? How does
- 7:28Speaker 2: he reach to the other people? What is it that
- 7:35Speaker 2: he uses in order to be transported to them? Now
- 7:42Speaker 2: you're beginning to understand he uses you and I, but
- 7:50Speaker 2: we are under his control. We are living a life
- 7:57Speaker 2: that is controlled by the Holy Spirit. You see, when
- 8:03Speaker 2: we are just inhabiting this earthly tent and the Holy
- 8:09Speaker 2: Spirit has not come in to make his home in us,
- 8:15Speaker 2: we then are subject to many of the works of
- 8:20Speaker 2: our earthly body. We're subject to what the world has
- 8:26Speaker 2: to offer, and we are more inclined to respond to
- 8:33Speaker 2: those events and those things than we would be if
- 8:39Speaker 2: we were totally controlled by the Holy Spirit. When the
- 8:44Speaker 2: Holy Spirit comes into us and then we surrender all
- 8:51Speaker 2: and he controls us, he then can move in us
- 8:57Speaker 2: and move us so that we actually are where he
- 9:04Speaker 2: wants us to be. Let me call your attention to
- 9:09Speaker 2: the Book of Acts once again. We have looked at
- 9:14Speaker 2: a passage in the Book of Acts where there had
- 9:19Speaker 2: been a great revival that had been taking place throughout Jerusalem.
- 9:27Speaker 2: And in that time we found that there was a
- 9:33Speaker 2: certain disciple who he was actually the one if you
- 9:39Speaker 2: recall that questioned Jesus. It is earthly form. He questioned
- 9:46Speaker 2: him and said, show us the Father and that will
- 9:53Speaker 2: suffice us, or it will be enough for us. And
- 9:58Speaker 2: Jesus asked the question, Philip, have I been so long
- 10:04Speaker 2: with you, but yet you do not know the Father.
- 10:11Speaker 2: If you've seen me, you've seen the Father. And Philip
- 10:18Speaker 2: didn't understand. But later Philip did understand. And it's an
- 10:26Speaker 2: amazing thing that what happened was that Philip was in
- 10:33Speaker 2: a revival. There were many many people that were coming
- 10:39Speaker 2: to know the Lord Jesus, and there were great works
- 10:43Speaker 2: that were being done through the Holy Spirit's use of Philip.
- 10:49Speaker 2: This is the same man who sometime before questioned Jesus
- 10:56Speaker 2: about the Father, and now Philip is being used mightily
- 11:02Speaker 2: to proclaim and demonstrate the life changing power of the Gospel.
- 11:09Speaker 2: But here's the interesting account. What takes place is that
- 11:16Speaker 2: Philip is actually led by the Spirit away from the
- 11:24Speaker 2: Great Revival. Now you would think that if a lot
- 11:28Speaker 2: of people were coming to know Jesus and there were
- 11:32Speaker 2: a tremendous ministry that was taking place, that would be
- 11:36Speaker 2: the place that he would stay. But the Holy Spirit
- 11:41Speaker 2: will take us where he wants us to go, as
- 11:46Speaker 2: long as we are totally surrendered to him. And so
- 11:52Speaker 2: here's the account. Beginning in the eighth chapter of Acts,
- 11:58Speaker 2: we see that here is a account where Philip is
- 12:05Speaker 2: actually told where to go, and so what he does.
- 12:11Speaker 2: He has an Angel of the Lord that speaks to him,
- 12:16Speaker 2: and he says, get up and go south to the
- 12:20Speaker 2: road that goes down from Jerusalem to the desert Gaza.
- 12:26Speaker 2: So he got up and went. There was an Ethiopian man,
- 12:31Speaker 2: a eunuch and high official of Candace, Queen of the Ethiopians,
- 12:37Speaker 2: who was in charge of her entire treasury. He had
- 12:44Speaker 2: come to worship in Jerusalem and was sitting in his
- 12:49Speaker 2: chariot on his way home, reading the Prophet Isaiah aloud.
- 12:57Speaker 2: The spirit told Philip go and join that chariot. When
- 13:04Speaker 2: Philip ran up to it, he heard him reading the
- 13:08Speaker 2: Prophet Isaiah and said, do you understand what you're reading?
- 13:14Speaker 2: The answer was how can I? He said, unless someone
- 13:19Speaker 2: guides me. So he invited Philip to come up and
- 13:24Speaker 2: sit with him. Now, the scripture passage he was reading
- 13:28Speaker 2: was this, He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
- 13:34Speaker 2: and as a lamb is silent before its shearer, so
- 13:38Speaker 2: he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation, justice
- 13:43Speaker 2: was denied him. Who will describe his generation? For his
- 13:49Speaker 2: life is taken from the earth, that is from Isaiah
- 13:54Speaker 2: the fifty third chapter and the seventh verse. The eunuch
- 14:01Speaker 2: replied to Philip, I ask you who is the prophet
- 14:06Speaker 2: saying this about himself or another person? So Philip proceeded
- 14:13Speaker 2: to tell him the good news about Jesus beginning from
- 14:19Speaker 2: that scripture. Now we know that what takes place following
- 14:26Speaker 2: this occurrence is that the Ethiopian eunuch actually receives Jesus,
- 14:34Speaker 2: and the very first thing that he asked is to
- 14:39Speaker 2: be baptized.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Richard will be right back in a moment to wrap up.

- 15:26Speaker 1: to wrap up today's message.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Now, I want us to understand. This is in the
- 15:32Speaker 2: eighth chapter of the Book of Acts, and when you
- 15:37Speaker 2: can read it for yourself, it begins with the twenty
- 15:40Speaker 2: sixth verse and it closes at the thirty third verse
- 15:49Speaker 2: for the quotation of Isaiah. But here's the wonderful thing
- 15:55Speaker 2: about it. You see, Philip could have said, well, I'm
- 16:02Speaker 2: sure that the Lord wants me to stay in Jerusalem
- 16:06Speaker 2: and take care of this great revival. And yet Philip
- 16:13Speaker 2: was not bound by what others may have thought. He
- 16:20Speaker 2: was submitted to the Holy Spirit. And because of that
- 16:25Speaker 2: the Ethiopian was saved. And how many in Ethiopia came
- 16:34Speaker 2: to know Jesus as Lord and Savior and were filled
- 16:40Speaker 2: with the Holy Spirit so they could continue the work
- 16:45Speaker 2: of ministry. We will find out more as we study
- 16:52Speaker 2: through the Book of Acts, and we find out these
- 16:57Speaker 2: are all examples of a life surrendered totally to the
- 17:03Speaker 2: Holy Spirit. Because of this, we as believers can be
- 17:10Speaker 2: used of God, under the power of the Holy Spirit,
- 17:16Speaker 2: to infect the lives of others with life changing power
- 17:24Speaker 2: in Jesus' name. And because of that we continue to
- 17:31Speaker 2: spread the Gospel of the Kingdom. And that is today's
- 17:38Speaker 2: Reflection on the Word.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Thank you, Richard. Join us again tomorrow when we continue
- 17:45Speaker 1: with the next edition of Reflections on.
