- Lucas: Ciao Luna! Ready for another episode of Learn Italian with Fexingo? Luna: Ciao Lucas! Yes! I loved our months recap last time. What are we learning today? Lucas: Today we're tackling something super useful: telling time in Italian. Think about how often you say what time it is. Luna: Oh, tons! Like 'What time is the meeting?' or 'It's almost lunchtime.' Okay, I'm ready! Lucas: Great! So the first phrase you need is 'Che ora è?' That means 'What time is it?' Let me say it slowly: Che ora è? Luna: Che ora è? Lucas: Perfect! Che ora è? Try it again. Luna: Che ora è? Lucas: Yeah! Now, to answer, we say 'È l'una' for one o'clock, because 'una' is feminine for one. Listen: È l'una. Luna: È l'una. Lucas: Exactly. For all other hours, we use 'Sono le' plus the number. For example, 'Sono le due' — it's two o'clock. Luna: Sono le due. Lucas: Yes! So two o'clock is 'Sono le due'. Let's practice a few. Sono le tre? Luna: That would be three o'clock. Lucas: Right. Now for half past, we say 'e mezza'. For example, 'Sono le tre e mezza' — it's half past three. Luna: Sono le tre e mezza. Lucas: Perfect! And for quarter past, 'e un quarto'. 'Sono le quattro e un quarto' — quarter past four. Luna: Sono le quattro e un quarto. That's a mouthful! Lucas: You'll get it! Now for quarter to, we say 'meno un quarto' or 'meno dieci' for ten to. For example, 'Sono le cinque meno dieci' — it's ten to five. Luna: Sono le cinque meno dieci. Lucas: Excellent! Let's do a quick recap. Che ora è? Luna: È l'una? Lucas: If it's one o'clock, yes. But let's say it's two o'clock. How would you say that? Luna: Sono le due. Lucas: Perfect! Now let's imagine a scene. You're at a café in Rome. The barista asks, 'Che ora è?' You look at your phone and it's half past three. What do you say? Luna: Umm... Sono le tre e mezza? Lucas: Yes! That's exactly right. 'Sono le tre e mezza.' Good job! Luna: Oh, that feels good. Can we practice one more? What if it's quarter past four? Lucas: Sure. 'Sono le quattro e un quarto.' Go ahead. Luna: Sono le quattro e un quarto. Lucas: Perfect! And ten to five? Luna: Sono le cinque meno dieci. Lucas: You did it! Let's wrap up with a full practice. Repeat after me: Che ora è? Luna: Che ora è? Lucas: È l'una. Luna: È l'una. Lucas: Sono le due. Luna: Sono le due. Lucas: Sono le tre e mezza. Luna: Sono le tre e mezza. Lucas: Sono le quattro e un quarto. Luna: Sono le quattro e un quarto. Lucas: Sono le cinque meno dieci. Luna: Sono le cinque meno dieci. Lucas: Fantastic! You now know how to tell time in Italian. Practice by looking at your watch and saying the time in Italian. Luna: I will! Grazie, Lucas. This was so helpful. And thanks to Fexingo for making learning fun. Lucas: Absolutely. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Italian with Fexingo. Ciao! Luna: Ciao!
