- 0:07everybody? Welcome to another episode of
- 0:09Rockford Initiative. My name is Phil and I am your
- 0:12host today. You guys are in for a treat.
- 0:18I don't know, I can really even explain this episode or sum it
- 0:23up in a way that, like, makes any sense at all.
- 0:28And I think that's really the beauty of the next, like, 80
- 0:31minutes of content that you're about to partake in.
- 0:35I got it down from like an hour and 45 minutes to roughly 80
- 0:42minutes. Yeah.
- 0:46There's just not any more I could cut because it's so it's
- 0:49simply too good. But I get to talk to Brayden and
- 0:55Jack from you have beautiful eyes, like the funniest people
- 1:00that I have had a chance to speak to yet.
- 1:03And we talk about so much. Specifically, we talk about the
- 1:10Russian Baltic naval fleet. And I know what you're thinking.
- 1:13Like I know that that doesn't sound like something that you
- 1:16want to stick around for, but you're wrong.
- 1:18You're really going to enjoy it if you're in the Columbus area.
- 1:23Columbus, OH, make sure you check out.

- 2:33It's healthier. I guess maybe make your decision
- 2:37after you listen to the story about the Russian Baltic naval
- 2:40fleet and see how you feel. The music you heard at the top
- 2:43of this episode is our friends in jam or I sack.

- 2:57And yeah, I mean, I don't, I don't have anything else to say.
- 3:02You're really, you're going to love this, I think.
- 3:17I am here with you, have beautiful eyes with Braden and
- 3:21Jack. I'm Jack, Right?
- 3:24Braden and Jack. Yeah, I've, that's weird.
- 3:26I've never heard my name, said, said first.
- 3:29Normally it's Jack and Braden, but I mean, I'm, I, I like you.
- 3:32Are that is alphabetical and on my screen at least you are left
- 3:37to right. That's Braden and Jack, so.
- 3:40I guess I just always think of Jack as like the even though I'm
- 3:43like, even though I'm like the front man in the band, I always
- 3:46think of Jack as like the the alpha Jack.
- 3:49The the the wizard, the sorcerer.
- 3:55All right, So when people sign up for an interview on the show,
- 3:59I have a single question on the calendar that just asks what are
- 4:04some things that you want to talk about?
- 4:05Your response was the Baltic Naval Fleet.
- 4:09The Russian Baltic naval. Fleet, Yes, the Russian Baltic
- 4:12Naval fleet. OK.
- 4:13Yes, which I think for my money is the funniest thing to ever
- 4:18happen in the history of the world.
- 4:20Before before we get into this though, yeah, this is all Jack.
- 4:25This is all me. It's.
- 4:27Not me at all. It's.
- 4:28Not a banned activity to sit and talk about the Russian Baltic
- 4:33Naval Fleet. I mean, we'll talk about it, but
- 4:36it's mainly just Jack. Because they don't have a
- 4:38choice. That talks about it because I've
- 4:40done 0 research into this. Well, they come over to my house
- 4:44and I'm like, you know what I want to talk about?
- 4:46Like, shut up. And I'm like the time that Japan
- 4:50and Russia went to war with each other over a port in China, and
- 4:56they're like, that's not interesting.
- 4:57Well, I hope it's at least a little interesting.
- 5:00I sell it sell. It so you.
- 5:02Sell it to the to the to the average listener that's stumbled
- 5:05upon this episode of Rockford Initiative.
- 5:07So Russia is even now they want a deep water port that doesn't
- 5:13freeze in the winter. If you look at Russia on a map
- 5:16which I don't have a map of anything in the on me.
- 5:19Because we can't read. Because we can't read.
- 5:21I can't Google anything. They want a deep water port, so
- 5:26they rented one from China after they built a railroad across
- 5:30their country to what's called Port Arthur in China.
- 5:34It's kind of like right near where China and Korea meet and
- 5:39Japan went. No, you don't get that.
- 5:42That's no, you don't get that. When was this?
- 5:45Give me a timeline, the time frame.
- 5:48This is I think it's 2000, 2004, I think it's pre World War 1, so
- 5:54it's like 19 O. Four, you're a little off on
- 5:57your first guess. I was off by like maybe 1000
- 6:01years. Yeah, 100.
- 6:04Jesus thousand years so it's before can't.
- 6:07Read can't do math. I saw an interview with the with
- 6:12the Ramones and they're like why does Dee Dee always count the
- 6:14songs off and one of them just goes yeah he was always so good
- 6:17with numbers. He was always good with Dumbest
- 6:201234. So it's pre World War One and
- 6:25Japan responds by sinking the entire Russian naval fleet in
- 6:30the Pacific over like the course of like 2 hours.
- 6:34They just flatten them. So Russia goes, we should
- 6:40probably do something about that.
- 6:41Japan then declares war after they've said we've got in a bag
- 6:46we've sank. All the boats, we're an island,
- 6:49you know. They're an island.
- 6:53So all of Russia's naval fleet is in like Latvia, like modern
- 6:58day Lithuania, Latvia. And they have to go either 4000
- 7:02miles by land or 18,000 miles by sea to get there.
- 7:07So before they even start, they build a boat that's too big and
- 7:11it just sinks in the harbor. They just, they just start and
- 7:16they sink a boat, right? And then they're like, all
- 7:18right, you got to get all the way there.
- 7:20We have to have to fight this war.
- 7:23Is that how they really sounded? Because I don't think that's a
- 7:25very good Russian accent. There's too many accents because
- 7:29it's the Soviet Union, so I'm just going to keep.
- 7:30With my sure, sure, sure, sure. Good job for the listeners, like
- 7:35the listeners normally Jack is like really, really good at
- 7:38accents, but. For the.
- 7:41Car for the listeners the people yeah the people that don't have
- 7:44like the audio captions on right now we're gonna we'll.
- 7:47We'll keep it simple. We'll keep it simple.
- 7:49For people with the audio captions on, we'll make it seem
- 7:52as though you're you're doing the.
- 7:54Accents exactly. So Czar Nicholas the Second this
- 7:57is pre Russian Revolution sends them and they immediately have a
- 8:02ship run aground and they have another ship just crash into
- 8:06another ship and one ship loses its anchor.
- 8:10So they're off to a good start. Yeah, great start.
- 8:15Then they didn't have like sailors.
- 8:21Like Russia doesn't have like a Navy really.
- 8:24They don't have like a naval population.
- 8:25So they have all these people from like Inland Russia who they
- 8:29conscripted who can't read, fans of the pod, fans of the van,
- 8:34they can't read, they can't swim and they can't sail.
- 8:39Russia. Russia, like famously, A
- 8:41landlocked A landlocked country. Yeah, right.
- 8:45There's only one country between Finland and North Korea, and
- 8:49that's Russia. Yeah, they border.
- 8:52One very long country. So it's like pencil.
- 8:56It's like the Pennsylvania of countries.
- 8:58It's the Pennsylvania. It's like Chile, but the long
- 9:00way. It's like Argentina, but the
- 9:03long way. If you just took Chile, just
- 9:07went this this way. Yeah.
- 9:09East, West. Yeah, sure.
- 9:10Yeah. So I I want to say this guy's
- 9:14name, but I'm not going to the guy who's in charge.
- 9:16They just call him Mad Dog. Mad Dog.
- 9:19All right. And they have to supply, I think
- 9:22100 extra binoculars because every time he has a temper
- 9:26tantrum, he just throws binoculars into the ocean.
- 9:29And and this guy has a ton of temper tantrums.
- 9:34Why are there no movies about this?
- 9:35I feel like there should be movies about this.
- 9:38Because you can't make a movie this sad.
- 9:42It doesn't end happy. OK, this is that's a good
- 9:45question. Like why not cast?
- 9:47Yeah, because even the. Movie so they leave they crash
- 9:52into each other they get to Denmark when they run into their
- 9:56first Japanese ships all right I think they all they think they
- 10:04think all of these boats open fire on 2 ships coming towards
- 10:08them. They don't go identify yourself,
- 10:10they just go and just start shelling these ships, fucking
- 10:16bombarding them. The ships unharmed.
- 10:20They miss every like 44 boats. They miss these two boats.
- 10:24All they come with is a piece of paper that says Mad Dog, you've
- 10:28been promoted. And then they fuck off.
- 10:33So they just. So these are Russian ships then?
- 10:37I think those were Russia. They're like Russian mail ships
- 10:39or some or like Danish mail ships.
- 10:41I'm not really sure what those two ships were.
- 10:44They were just. Ships with the mail basically.
- 10:47And then they get to the UK. They're just outside in what's
- 10:52called Dogger Bank. You can look this up, the Dogger
- 10:56Bank incident, they see 3 or 4 ships.
- 11:00I think they see four ships. And again, they're like, these
- 11:03are Japanese, this is the Japanese Navy, and they open
- 11:07fire on them again, on the ships that they don't let identify
- 11:10themselves, they just attack. So they're just any ship they
- 11:13see. They're like Japanese.
- 11:15Yes, because they have no idea where they are in the world.
- 11:19Yeah, they're just in the water. They're in England and they're
- 11:24attacking trollers. England also a an island though,
- 11:30so you know, yes. Famously island boys.
- 11:34So so during this battle, all 44 ships are sorry.
- 11:41All the ships are like, I think they killed like two or three
- 11:43people. I think they killed, they killed
- 11:442 Brits and injure 6. Meanwhile, there are people on
- 11:49the boats in their life vests in the fetal position, just ready
- 11:54to die. These are, they're like, I can't
- 11:58swim. Other people are like, we're
- 12:00being boarded right now. So they grab swords and they're
- 12:07just attacking imaginary Japanese people on the ship.
- 12:13On the on the English fishing trawlers.
- 12:17Yeah, they're fishing trawlers. They can't.
- 12:19Trawlers, like their Nets are in the dirt, so they can't just
- 12:24like pick them up and go. Right, they're kind of.
- 12:27Stuck. They're kind of stuck.
- 12:30This is this is pivotal because this almost starts a war between
- 12:34England and Japan. Oh, sorry, not Japan.
- 12:37England and Russia. Yeah.
- 12:38They were like, you can't just attack our fishing boats.
- 12:42And they were the the Russians were like, sorry, we didn't know
- 12:46we were under. We were pretty sure you guys are
- 12:48Japanese. We thought you guys were the
- 12:50Japanese, naturally. We saw boats, we thought this,
- 12:55this becomes a running theme that they just attack ships, but
- 12:59then they don't know what they are.
- 13:01But the right the this almost starts a war with, obviously,
- 13:05England. England, yeah.
- 13:06Rule Britannia. Britannia rules the waves.
- 13:09They're like, dude, these guys are, they can't hit boats that
- 13:12are stationary. We would cook them, but the bet
- 13:17that what they do is they then close the Suez Canal.
- 13:20So they have to go the long way. They have to go all the way
- 13:24around Africa to get to Japan, all the way over there.
- 13:30Russia doesn't have African colonies, so there's nowhere to,
- 13:35like, dock, dock. There's nowhere for them to,
- 13:38like, do anything. Yeah.
- 13:41So they have to then just load the ship with coal.
- 13:46They were just like, all right, well, because we can't go the
- 13:51shorter way. We have to just load with coal.
- 13:54German ships give them tons and tons and tons of coal, which
- 13:57just causes people to die that like it's just toxic to be on
- 14:01the boat with that much coal. It's just too much coal and some
- 14:05people are dying. Yeah, people are dying, but I'll
- 14:08get back to that. Because once once they kind of
- 14:13like round Portugal and they're like starting through Morocco,
- 14:17they lose 1 of the ships, they lose, they lose the repair ship,
- 14:21they're just like, fuck. It's the most important of the
- 14:23ships. That's the most important of the
- 14:25ships, the ship that helps repair the other ships.
- 14:28So they lose them, they find them like sometime later.
- 14:33This is also the longest military thing.
- 14:37I think it's the longest military mission ever.
- 14:40Like it takes seven months to get from where they're going to
- 14:43where they got. And when you say lose them, I
- 14:47now understand that to mean like they just lost them, like they
- 14:51didn't know where they were, not like they lost them.
- 14:54They that that ship sunk. Yeah, no, they didn't think they
- 14:57were just like. Guys, where'd you go?
- 15:00Where'd you go? They woke up late, got left home
- 15:03alone. They took the wrong turn to
- 15:05Albuquerque, mind you. That dog's chucking binoculars.
- 15:10Binoculars. Binoculars.
- 15:12He's getting so mad. They fit the binoculars on the
- 15:15boat with all that coal. Yeah, they had extra binoculars,
- 15:19so. And they're also, he's leaving a
- 15:20trail of binoculars behind, right.
- 15:22So if the ship is like like. Trailing like Hansel and Gretel
- 15:26leaving the trail you would. Think you would think that the
- 15:31repair boat would have known to follow the binoculars.
- 15:34I think they did. Yeah, I think they did.
- 15:38That's how they got back. I see.
- 15:40I see. And when the repair boat got
- 15:42back, they were like, guys, we attacked 3 Japanese ships, they
- 15:47did the same thing. They were like we we attacked
- 15:50the repair boat did, the repair boat did.
- 15:53Just by themselves, they're like, oh, there's a boat, let's
- 15:55attack that. Again, these are not Japanese
- 15:58boats. One was a German boat, one was
- 16:00another British boat, and one was a Finnish like merchant ship
- 16:04or like a Swedish merchant ship. They just fucking attack them.
- 16:08I think in my notes here it says 300 shells were fired and nobody
- 16:13was hit. They're just, yeah, they're just
- 16:20unload. You know, when you just like
- 16:22spam attack and Elvin ring and you're just like, why isn't it
- 16:25killing you? You're like, oh fuck, I got to
- 16:28come back to this when I'm levelled up.
- 16:29Yeah. So they're going, they go all
- 16:33the way around Africa. And at that point people are
- 16:38dying. The morale is dog shit.
- 16:41As it would be. As it as you would imagine it
- 16:43would be. Worse.
- 16:45Worse than Odysseus's. The journey home.
- 16:49The morale is so low. They they had a funeral and when
- 16:55they were having which they had to have a million.
- 16:57Funerals probably a lot at. This point, they're having a lot
- 16:59of funerals. Do you think he was?
- 17:00Was he chucking bodies like he was chucking binoculars or do
- 17:04you think they were more? Do you think he was more?
- 17:06Respectful. I think he was a little bit more
- 17:10respectful at the corpses, but they have they have a funeral
- 17:14and then they go to like shoot blanks, except one of the ships
- 17:18doesn't shoot blanks. It just fires into another ship.
- 17:24That ship had to get. That ship got.
- 17:26Sent home actually probably the best case scenario for these
- 17:29guys at this point. That's probably, that's probably
- 17:31the best decision that they've made this whole time.
- 17:34I mean, I think the best decision is attacking imaginary
- 17:37people with swords. That to me is my that's my
- 17:41favorite detail. If you think people are getting
- 17:45on your boat and you're just, you're panicked because you
- 17:48can't swim and you're in the ocean, you're terrified.
- 17:52You think that people are getting on your boat of the
- 17:55boats that you attacked. So you attack unprovoked.
- 18:00Unprovoked. They're attacking ships all the
- 18:04way there. So so then they get to
- 18:08Madagascar again, Maraus Lowe and somebody says, you know what
- 18:12we should do? Get pets.
- 18:15We should get cool African wildlife on the ship.
- 18:20So they all get like lizards. Parrot.
- 18:24I think Mad Dog got a parrot at one point.
- 18:28I, I looked this up and I couldn't find if this was true.
- 18:32Somebody got a crocodile, OK. And somebody got a poisonous
- 18:36snake that they used to feed vodka.
- 18:39That's like, that's like in the rumor mill.
- 18:41That's that. We can't know that.
- 18:43One's that, one's not. Proof.
- 18:44I feel like that's about as Russian stereotype as you get
- 18:47buying a snake and feeding it vodka.
- 18:49It's the first thing I would do just.
- 18:52Yeah, I'm not sure. Yeah, sure.
- 18:54So yeah, they get, I think somebody got bit by one of the
- 18:57snakes and I think there was a day where everybody was looking
- 19:00for somebody's lost chameleon. They were looking for the lost
- 19:05chameleon on the board. So what happens after that?
- 19:12They're in Madagascar. Oh yeah, everybody's sick.
- 19:15And at one point Mad Dog gets sick.
- 19:17He gets like. Not Mad Dog.
- 19:19Mad Dog gets sick. Shout outs to Mad Dog.
- 19:21Big respect Mad Dog. And the second in command has a
- 19:25brain hemorrhage, so basically nobody's in charge.
- 19:28They're in Madagascar. They're just at brothels.
- 19:32Like everybody's going to brothels, no one's in charge.
- 19:36Wildlife everywhere. They have a mutiny, It kind of
- 19:39gets put down and then they take off.
- 19:45I forgot at this point they're chucking so many people
- 19:47overboard. I forgot to say that they're
- 19:49also being trailed by sharks. Well, yeah, they're yeah.
- 19:53They're in the water. Yeah, they're giving them free
- 19:57meals. Yeah, of course the charge will
- 19:59be following them. Yeah.
- 20:03And then when they're like leaving Madagascar, mad dogs
- 20:06like, dude, we need to actually learn how to be a Navy now.
- 20:11Now's the tide. They have to cross the entire
- 20:13Indian Ocean and mad dog's like, dude, we should do target
- 20:17practice. So he has a one boat dragged
- 20:21behind like a fake decoy boat and all that hits the real boat.
- 20:27Right. They sink their own boat.
- 20:28Doesn't say. There's no way this goes poorly.
- 20:32Everything that could go wrong basically goes wrong.
- 20:36You've got toxic animals. Yeah, Target practice.
- 20:40Everybody has STD's. Everybody's got STD's.
- 20:44Madagascar brothels from Madagascar brothels.
- 20:48These guys are also like, they've probably never really
- 20:51been hot. Yeah.
- 20:53Can you imagine how hot? Right.
- 20:56Yeah. This is to them if you're from
- 20:58like, you know, central Russia, where like, I don't know.
- 21:02You get like a good 50° day. Yeah, I feel like maybe like
- 21:07that's as hot as it gets. It's like 70 and all of a sudden
- 21:10you're like 110. Yeah, it's humid.
- 21:13Yeah. And you're you have a snake.
- 21:15Yeah. Like that's, that's got to be
- 21:17crazy to them. Yeah.
- 21:20So they they run out of ammunition because they're not
- 21:24hitting any targets. Of course they do.
- 21:26So they order more ammunition and what they get when they're
- 21:31there, like what comes in the packages of ammunition, is
- 21:34winter supplies. It's like fur coats and fur.
- 21:39Where did they order these from? It's actually a really good
- 21:43question. I have no.
- 21:43Idea how this would work yeah how did they yeah how did they
- 21:46set probably you know when did the when did the Dang Amazon.
- 21:51When did, oh, when did Morse code?
- 21:52Yeah, that's another thing. Thank you for reminding me that
- 21:55when they were leaving Morocco they cut an underwater cable so
- 22:02the whole country was without communication to the outside
- 22:05world for like 4 days. Oh my.
- 22:09Or at least one city in Morocco was without communication to the
- 22:12outside world for like 4 days. And.
- 22:15Because they're, they're, what do you call it?
- 22:17Their anchor? Just yeah, yeah.
- 22:19Snipped it. So how long?
- 22:20So how long are we at now? How long have they how long have
- 22:23they been? Let's, let's how how long have
- 22:26they been at sea for? Let's go on Wikipedia because I
- 22:29think this is Trafalgar I. That's the name of, that's the
- 22:34name of a wing piece. Character Trafalgar.
- 22:36Yeah, Trafalgar is the other. That's that's the other really
- 22:39important naval war. Yeah, Trafalgar D Water law.
- 22:42D Water Law. Yeah, we've talked about this,
- 22:44Jack. We've talked about how One Piece
- 22:46characters have the most insane names.
- 22:48That's. True.
- 22:52Let's see where's I don't know where it is.
- 22:55That's what I sorry, that's what I bring to the conversation as
- 22:57One Piece thing. One Piece.
- 22:59I talk about anime. I talk about anime and One Piece
- 23:02and Dungeons and Dragons and shit.
- 23:04Jack's all about all about this shit.
- 23:07The Baltic Naval Fleet. That's the only thing I'm into.
- 23:10I think at this point it's probably like 5 or 6 months that
- 23:13they've been at sea. Jesus Christ, Can you imagine?
- 23:15No. And it's not.
- 23:17It's sucks. It's fucking sucks dude.
- 23:21Where was I? These are all.
- 23:23People who have never been at sea before either, so like for
- 23:26the first month they're probably just seasick the whole time.
- 23:29Yeah. Oh, I didn't even think about
- 23:30how seasick they are. These are huge boats too.
- 23:33Yeah. You one of the boats is called
- 23:36the. I forget what the fuck it's
- 23:39called. It's it's still out there.
- 23:43They made it. Oh well, that's no spoilers.
- 23:47No spoilers. Yeah, they have like these are
- 23:52like kind of modern boats like it's it's nineteen O 5.
- 23:54They look like boats would look now sure, except one was too big
- 23:58and sink yes. So yeah, they got winter
- 24:01clothing instead of ammunition. I have no idea how they did
- 24:04communications. Yeah, and I would like to have
- 24:07been there when they were like, oh, finally some explosives and
- 24:10it was just coats and they were like we don't need this.
- 24:14We we won't need this for some time.
- 24:16Someone someone messed up. Yeah.
- 24:19So then I'm going to there's, I don't think anything happens
- 24:22like while they're going through the Indian Ocean.
- 24:25That must be a a talking relief. Yeah, right.
- 24:29So they finally get to Japan. They finally get to the to Sima
- 24:36Straight is what it's called. It's the strip of land between
- 24:40Korea and Japan, the strip of water between Korea and Japan.
- 24:42Yeah, Sushima, Sushima. And they're, they like they're
- 24:47coming in at night and the hospital boat has to have all of
- 24:51its lights on in order in like legally it has to have all of
- 24:55its lights on so that nobody attacks it and you don't attack
- 24:58the other one. Well, if I know one thing about
- 25:00this Baltic fleet, it's about attacking and not attacking the
- 25:04correct thing. You are wrong.
- 25:07They get over there and they crushed.
- 25:09No, they, they, they see one other ship and they're like,
- 25:14those are our boys. Those are our boys.
- 25:16That that thing in the water has to be another Russian ship.
- 25:20They must have forgotten that all of the Russian ships at this
- 25:23point are destroyed. So they signal, Hey, be quiet.
- 25:28OK, That ship over there, the ships behind us are Russian
- 25:32ships. You're a Russian ship.
- 25:34We're Russian ships. Chill.
- 25:37And it wasn't a Russian ship. It was a Japanese ship.
- 25:40And they just annihilate the entire fleet in the matter.
- 25:45And like this says that the battle lasted one day.
- 25:50It lasted from the 27th to the 28th of May 19 O 5.
- 25:57They just got slaughtered when they arrived there.
- 26:01So let me this is dark, but I'm going to read the list of
- 26:04casualties on the Japanese side. 117 people have died and 583 are
- 26:15injured. On the Russian side, 5000 are
- 26:19dead, 800 are injured and 6000 are captured.
- 26:24Every major ship has been captured.
- 26:27The Japanese took either sank or captured every ship and this
- 26:32basically ends the war. It was such a disaster that
- 26:37Russia. And the war really never
- 26:38started. I used a very one sided war
- 26:42until Japan actually got involved.
- 26:45Well, no Asian army or anything had ever beaten a European armed
- 26:50force. Yeah.
- 26:51Until then. That's crazy, right?
- 26:53Yeah, that's crazy. I think the Japanese also had
- 26:56British ships that. Yeah.
- 27:00I think they probably ships. That probably seems that
- 27:02probably seems accurate. I don't really know.
- 27:04I think, I think, I think they, I think they did so.
- 27:07And they were like also trained, yeah.
- 27:09And literate and knew how to swim.
- 27:13They knew. Important things.
- 27:14Yeah. So that's what happened and.
- 27:20That's a great story. Is that why?
- 27:23Is that why the Russian people revolted and killed Anastasia's
- 27:26dad? I think it kind of helped.
- 27:30Like I think it was embarrassing to lose to a smaller island.
- 27:36People like, I think this was like a big, I don't really know
- 27:40what led up to the Russian Revolution like.
- 27:44Yeah. That's so that's.
- 27:46I think starving was a big a big part of it.
- 27:49Yeah, so he's. So what we learned today at
- 27:53least, is the Russians are terrible when it comes to naval
- 27:58battles. Naval battles?
- 27:59Yes. Terrible.
- 28:01At it, but we know from history though in terms of like land
- 28:04battles. Crush it.
- 28:05Pretty good. That was like I had AI.
- 28:07Had a history teacher in high school that had like. 3 Cardinal
- 28:12rules. Yes #1 don't eat yellow snow.
- 28:17Good rule, hey? Thumbs up number #2 yeah, don't
- 28:21hold in a sneeze. Don't hold in a sneeze.
- 28:23Never hold in a sneeze and #3 don't invade Russia in the
- 28:30winter. This is this is a common
- 28:32misconception, but the Nazis and never invaded in the winter.
- 28:36I'm talking about, I'm talking about Napoleon.
- 28:38I don't think he invaded in the winter either, did he?
- 28:41I think he, I don't know exactly when, but I think it was winter
- 28:46to him. To him, Yeah, well.
- 28:48This is the thing. About like invading Russia.
- 28:51Yeah. Is they just have to stay 1
- 28:53village ahead of you. Yeah, because that's what they.
- 28:56I think they did this when Napoleon invaded Russia.
- 29:00They were just one village in front of their forces.
- 29:02Yep. They would burn everything down,
- 29:04poison the well, move on. Burn everything down, poison the
- 29:07well, move on. Yeah, burn everything down,
- 29:08poison the well. Yep.
- 29:09So there was like you were just, you're just exhausting your
- 29:13supply lines while they're just like, I'm home, baby.
- 29:19We're jealous. This is nothing to me.
- 29:21We're having a good time. I know it's cold to you, to you.
- 29:25See you that's. Another Tuesday.
- 29:28Listen, I would be having fist fights on frozen lakes if hockey
- 29:32didn't exist. This is nothing to me.
- 29:35Yeah, this is regular. Let's let's go.
- 29:40Let's go anime for a little bit. I'd love to hear.
- 29:42I'd love to hear your anime takes, Brayden.
- 29:45Yeah. For sure.
- 29:46Well, Jack just put his microphone down because I don't
- 29:48know how much he has to add to this.
- 29:50I have seen cartoons, yeah. No, I mean, I love, I love
- 29:56anime, you know? Can we?
- 29:58Just let me, let me turn it back just a second.
- 30:01I want to. I want to make sure that the
- 30:03Internet heard Jack call anime cartoons.
- 30:07Yes, yeah, that's fine. Which is that like from?
- 30:10Is that a thing? I think that's a.
- 30:11Thing I think, I think people get real salty about that.
- 30:14I don't. I don't really care.
- 30:16I mean, in my defense, the pictures do move.
- 30:18No, I get it. And I do love cartoons.
- 30:21Yeah, I think I I didn't. Know that that was I know
- 30:24there's the Subs versus dubs debate.
- 30:27Yeah, I just think like, I mean, cartoons is a very like Western,
- 30:31like a Western term, you know what I mean?
- 30:34It is. I guess it's not Western, but
- 30:37it's like a Western originally, Yeah.
- 30:39Like what's I think? The same people or the same
- 30:41caliber of people that get upset when you talk about what is and
- 30:46is not emo are the ones that are getting upset about anime being
- 30:49called cartoons. But those people fucking suck.
- 30:53Yeah. Those people who are like, real
- 30:55emo is back in the day. It was back in DC when we were
- 31:00in the 40s. Those people suck.
- 31:03Like, I think that argument is lame.
- 31:05Yeah. Let things evolve.
- 31:07Let us use the same name for different.
- 31:09Music. Yeah, 'cause you're not.
- 31:11Still speaking Proto Indo European, You're speaking modern
- 31:15English. Like things change and we call
- 31:17them the same thing. Yeah, it's totally fine.
- 31:19Well, it's crazy too, because even and like fucking, you know,
- 31:23spoilers for one piece, but like Luffy's Luffy's gear five and
- 31:28one piece, they literally he literally taps into what people
- 31:31are like calling the tune force, which is because he's able to
- 31:35change, he's able to change the things around him into rubber
- 31:39and he's able to like basically mimic that's.
- 31:42So Brazilian. Cartoons like he he is a lot.
- 31:46A lot of the stuff. A lot of the stuff he's doing in
- 31:49Gear 5 is mimicking Western cartoons.
- 31:52That's he has a very cartoony character.
- 31:54I don't know a lot about One Piece, but.
- 31:57One piece is great, I so here's. We have a song coming out about
- 32:01one piece. We do, actually.
- 32:02We do have a song about one piece coming out.
- 32:05It was my idea to do about one piece and I was like but I can't
- 32:08write. Anything.
- 32:09Yeah, that was like, oh, don't worry Jack, I got you to.
- 32:11Write all of the lyrics. Yeah, which is so crazy.
- 32:14So shout out, shout out to Will Thome.
- 32:16He one of my really, really good friends from New York, big, big,
- 32:21big, big into One Piece and has tried to get me into One Piece
- 32:25for years and years and years and years.
- 32:27And I just said no Will like it's too much.
- 32:29I guess. There's so many episodes I think
- 32:31by the like. So many I have it was like.
- 32:33Short attention when he was talking to me about this it was
- 32:35like maybe like 708 hundred episodes so back in 2023 I
- 32:41finally was like bit the bullet and I was like all right I'm
- 32:43going to watch One piece and at this point they had passed 1000
- 32:46episodes and so. Yeah, that's.
- 32:52It and so I texted Will and I was like, well, I'm going to
- 32:54start my one piece journey in October of 2023, July of 2024, I
- 33:03had fully caught up. How many months is that?
- 33:05Wow. November, December.
- 33:09January. February, March.
- 33:13April, May. Do a little, do a little math.
- 33:16OK, what was the? What was the original date?
- 33:19October 2023, the literally the 1st of October 2023 and July of
- 33:262024. I don't know the exact date when
- 33:28I actually caught up. I mean, I probably could go like
- 33:29look at my text messages. Easily sailed from the Baltic
- 33:32coast all the way to Japan. Yeah.
- 33:35Around Russia, yeah. Yeah, no problem.
- 33:37Yeah, so. That is 274 days.
- 33:41That means you were watching probably about four episodes a
- 33:45day. Yeah, I think I was I think I
- 33:47was averaging because there were there were sometimes where I was
- 33:50I got a little burnt out. And so I like so, but I think
- 33:55when I first started basic from like, I would say like episode 1
- 34:00until about around the time skip, which I, I, you can't,
- 34:07don't quote me on when the time skip happens.
- 34:09I don't know what episode that is.
- 34:11It's probably around like 4 or 500, maybe 600.
- 34:14I don't know again. Or 600.
- 34:16You have a 200 episode range. Yeah, so I think so between
- 34:21somewhere between 4 episode 400 and 600 is when the time skip
- 34:25happens. I was probably averaging around
- 34:2940. I was probably averaging around
- 34:3140 to 50 episodes a week. It's like a full time job.
- 34:35And then I, yeah, I, well, I was watching it while I was working
- 34:38one, one of my jobs. So I watched so many episodes.
- 34:42I was like, you're like working like I'm watching.
- 34:45No, I was working. So I was working at the local.
- 34:48I was working at the local YMCA at from 5:00 AM until 8:00 AM.
- 34:54So I was working, I was working, yeah, only a three hour shift,
- 34:57but it was when the Y opened and so nobody this.
- 35:02Was in Manhattan, no. No, no, this isn't.
- 35:04No, this is when I was back in Ohio.
- 35:06Because I walked past that YMCA. That's just like in Manhattan.
- 35:10I know what you're talking about, yeah.
- 35:11And the smell of chlorine comes out.
- 35:13Yeah. And it's really weird to smell.
- 35:17Yeah, in Manhattan, Yeah, You're like, whoa, I'm on 44th St.
- 35:22Yeah, so in nine months, I, I caught up to where One Piece
- 35:25was, I think at the time then it was probably around like 1020
- 35:30something, 1030 something. They had just finished, they
- 35:33just finished the Wano arc and they were getting ready to move
- 35:37over to the Egghead arc. So I had I had fully caught up
- 35:41and I'm still I'm only like like 6 episodes behind on the on the
- 35:46yeah, I'm like 6 episodes behind on the L bath arc.
- 35:49But I'm all but I'm fully caught up on the manga.
- 35:52I've I've I'm fully caught up reading where they are.
- 35:55How do they make I? Thought you couldn't read?
- 35:59Well, it's mostly you can read. Well, it's mostly.
- 36:02Mostly, you're right. Like I don't, I don't need to
- 36:05read to see what's going on in the pictures.
- 36:07Bobby Bobby posted on his Instagram story like a review of
- 36:11Dungeon Carl. Dungeon Crawl and Carl, yeah.
- 36:14And I was like, what the fuck are you doing?
- 36:15You know what? I messaged him also.
- 36:17I also, I messaged him separately and I was just like,
- 36:20hey, I'm really proud of you because I also love that book
- 36:22series. You can't let Jack see this.
- 36:25You can't let Jack know what's somebody.
- 36:28Shout out to Bobby and tell him it is some words.
- 36:30Yeah. It is.
- 36:33Yeah, shout outs for the rest of it.
- 36:34Is one of those books though, that is very popular because of
- 36:38the audio book, because of the audio book out there.
- 36:41Oh dude. So we've called them a guitar
- 36:43for boys, yeah. Court of No, I mean, yeah.
- 36:46That right bef I've saw like a TikTok video right before where
- 36:50they were talking right before I got on with you guys where they
- 36:52were talking about dungeon crawl and Carl being a guitar for
- 36:56boys. I see, I see you have the books.
- 36:57I see you have the books. I do, right?
- 36:59I could write there those covers anywhere.
- 37:01And then there's a little 3D printed Carl holding him up.
- 37:04Sick. But yeah.
- 37:08Do you consider audio books reading?
- 37:10Yeah, because I don't actually really read.
- 37:13Yeah, I, I think I, I. I listen to a book.
- 37:17Because here, because here's my thing about, here's my thing
- 37:19about audiobooks is I think if you literally were to spend the
- 37:24same amount of time reading as you would be listening to the
- 37:28audiobook, you would get the book done in the amount of time
- 37:32that it is to listen to the audiobook.
- 37:34And I'm also not an ableist. Like, I would be like, yeah, I
- 37:38don't think that the blind should not enjoy books.
- 37:40Yeah, exact seems real. No, I agree.
- 37:42So yes, I do have. Braille for that as well.
- 37:45I am but. And to be speechless.
- 37:49Phil, you got me. Phil, you got me.
- 37:53Damn. He's made a great point.
- 37:55And I have nothing to. I was trying to be inclusive.
- 37:57Yeah. And he just out it's.
- 37:59Great that you were trying to be inclusive.
- 38:01I'm sorry, I'm, I'm over here just dashing your dreams and and
- 38:06good, good guy points. Yeah.
- 38:10I will say, if we want to, if we want to take this combo back to
- 38:13anime, this is my this is my hot take.
- 38:14This is my hot take on anime. Subs or dubs?
- 38:18Hold on, let's let's let it cut evenly for the, for the, for the
- 38:23content creation and go. I think it depends on the show
- 38:31you're watching. Oh, Subs or dubs?
- 38:34Yeah, because I have never gone Subs because I don't want to be
- 38:41looking. Sure.
- 38:43I want to be looking at all of the the things that are going
- 38:46on. Yes, but some people like the
- 38:48original voice actors are so good.
- 38:50You want to enjoy that. And you're like, sure, I
- 38:53understand that. Yes.
- 38:54I don't understand that. So here's my biggest here's my
- 38:58biggest proponent of this Right. So last year, was it last year?
- 39:03I don't remember. Anyways, the Chainsaw Man movie,
- 39:05The Reza arc came out. Right, sick theme song.
- 39:09Fuck it, it's such a. Good theme.
- 39:10Really, really good movie too. Really beautifully, like really
- 39:14beautifully animated. Really, really well done.
- 39:17I went and saw it with Sub, right?
- 39:22I went and saw it with Sub and I was not impressed.
- 39:28Are you in the theaters? I was in.
- 39:29I was in the theaters. I was, I was in.
- 39:31I watched it in theaters. So you're looking at letters of
- 39:34foot tall? Yes, and everything is
- 39:37happening. Yes, yes, exactly.
- 39:38And I was not impressed. Dang.
- 39:41I liked I liked the music and I liked the voice acting, but
- 39:46everything else I was like, and then and then I was like, I need
- 39:50to give it a second shot because there was there is a lot of
- 39:53sensory overload because I was trying to read.
- 39:55I was trying to pay attention. I went back and saw it in dubs
- 40:00and I have AI had a much better time and I had a much I had much
- 40:07more appreciation for the film because I was able to see what
- 40:10was going on. Yeah, without having to divide
- 40:14my attention. Right.
- 40:15Yeah. So I think I.
- 40:18Just out of curiosity. Yeah, go ahead.
- 40:20Sorry. Out of curiosity, how did you
- 40:22watch the series? I watched it and I watched the
- 40:25series and sub. Interesting, but you didn't like
- 40:28the movie in dub in theaters? I'm sorry.
- 40:31In sub, in theaters, yes. Correct.
- 40:33Just maybe because it was in a theater and the screen is so
- 40:37fucking big. Yeah.
- 40:40So I so normally when it when it comes to anime for me, normally
- 40:43I will watch it sub. I know I will watch it sub.
- 40:47I will watch it as it, I will watch it as it comes out because
- 40:49I just like it that way. I will watch things in dub
- 40:54though. If I am going back to a series
- 40:58and I, if I, if I enjoyed the series and I now want to see
- 41:02like, OK, what now? What's the English like quote UN
- 41:04quote adaptation of this? And how are the English voice
- 41:07voice actors like presenting this?
- 41:09Then I'll go back and watch it, especially if I just want
- 41:11something on as like background noise, I'll watch it in English.
- 41:15That way I can just like listen and I kind of know what's going
- 41:18on already because I've, I've gone through the series.
- 41:20Have you ever watched a dub and been like they that's the voice
- 41:24they went with? Yeah, yeah, hundreds.
- 41:27Yeah, hundreds. Yeah, that's.
- 41:29Not what he sounded like or they sounded like before.
- 41:31Oh, yeah, hundreds sometimes. Yeah, absolutely.
- 41:34I think one of the biggest. OK, here's another hot take.
- 41:38I think one of the biggest. You think English is the best
- 41:43language? So I was so I was very I was
- 41:50very into anime as a child, right.
- 41:52You know, I kind of, you know, I grew up watching like Dragon
- 41:55Ball Z when Naruto came onto the scene, I watched Naruto.
- 42:01Yeah, exactly. And then I kind of fell off,
- 42:04right. I fell off in those like like
- 42:06teen years, like early teen years and then.
- 42:10And the show that actually got me back into anime was a little
- 42:14show called Sword Art Online. Sword Art Love Sword Art Online.
- 42:19Which most, most anime fans, I think like a lot of like anime
- 42:23enjoyers would look at me and say that's a fucking trash show.
- 42:27And here's the thing. They're not super wrong, but I
- 42:32have to. I likes it, I know.
- 42:34And that's. Great.
- 42:35I do. I really do.
- 42:36Like, Yeah. I thought, but here, and here's
- 42:38the thing, I have to give it as accolades and I think if a lot
- 42:41of like anime fans actually like sat down and thought about it
- 42:44for a second. I think Sword R Online brought a
- 42:48lot of anime fans back that had been gone for years, right?
- 42:54Does it have some problematic things in it?
- 42:57Absolutely. So do most anime.
- 42:59That's not the anime where there was nobody like in charge of the
- 43:02dub. So the dub is just fucking why?
- 43:04No, that's ghost story. Yeah, something like.
- 43:08I think you're right. I think it's Ghost Story.
- 43:10Ghost story is crazy. It was like an.
- 43:12Adult Swim. Cartoon.
- 43:13Yeah, there's a there's a clip of where they're like where
- 43:16they're like running on a track. And he was just like, they're
- 43:18like, go, go, go. And he's just like, oh, I can't
- 43:21anymore. And then he goes run like a
- 43:22black person chasing you. And he goes, Oh my terrible, by
- 43:26the way, terrible. Just want to say that.
- 43:29Absolutely terrible. But that's what they did.
- 43:31That's what they did. That's what they did.
- 43:33If you got, if somebody gave you a cartoon, yeah, it's just like
- 43:37dub it and you were like, what's it about?
- 43:39And they were like, I didn't say I'd had that.
- 43:41Information, it doesn't matter. That's basically, yeah, that's
- 43:45basically what they did. They were just like, what?
- 43:47I don't know. Yeah, that's so sick.
- 43:49But yeah, so. So Sword Art Online brought me
- 43:53back into anime and I actually watched Sword Art Online first
- 43:58in dub and then when I went to go back and watch it in sub, I
- 44:02was like, oh, I don't really like this.
- 44:05I don't, I don't know if I like this.
- 44:09And so so yeah. So I.
- 44:10Always have like a very like high pitched Japanese voice
- 44:13actor, right? Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 44:15My my Portuguese teacher said that he couldn't watch The
- 44:18Simpsons in English because hearing Homer's American voice
- 44:22was just like it was splitting the fucking hemisphere.
- 44:25Yeah. And he was like he was.
- 44:27Interesting. He was like, no, Homer's
- 44:29supposed to be for Rio, that. Really, like turns like that,
- 44:35that concept is not something that I would have ever thought
- 44:38about until you brought it up just now.
- 44:40But like, that kind of turns my whole perspective of things
- 44:43upside down. Like, yeah, there are people
- 44:45who've never watched The Simpsons in English and.
- 44:49Just the guy who does Homer Simpsons voice in Mexico is
- 44:53supposed to be elite, like, the best voice actor of all time.
- 44:57Interesting. But like, yeah, like, some shows
- 44:59get dubbed and like in other languages and then just take on
- 45:03a whole fucking new life. Yeah.
- 45:05Like, you know, the show everybody hates Chris.
- 45:07Yes. That's the most popular show in
- 45:09Brazil. That's.
- 45:10Crazy. Because somebody described it to
- 45:13me, they were like, it's kind of an A believable Brazilian story.
- 45:17They were like, this dub is incredible.
- 45:19It's just about like people with not a lot of money in a diverse
- 45:22situation just hanging out with each other.
- 45:25Yeah, in like a city. So they were like, it's not like
- 45:29rich people doing. I'm just, I'm being really mean
- 45:32to Brazilians. Yeah, we're supposed to tour
- 45:35there. We're.
- 45:35Supposed to tour there. We're supposed to play every
- 45:37single place there. Yeah.
- 45:38But he was like, it's not like unimaginable that they're just
- 45:41like, they're just dudes hanging out.
- 45:42And. And I guess it was also probably
- 45:45if you put on at the right time. That's fair.
- 45:47He. Watches it.
- 45:47Yeah, like that I guess that's the dub sub debate if you if the
- 45:52dub is fucking dog shit. Yeah, do you watch it in sub do?
- 45:55You watch it in sub yeah, but then you have to.
- 45:57I would say I for me, a lot of time it's like, how much of it
- 46:01am I going to consume? Like am I watching an an episode
- 46:04as it comes out? Then yeah, sub's fine.
- 46:06If I'm going to like watch 50 or or 60 episodes of One Piece in a
- 46:12week, I'm probably I'm probably going to go with the dub.
- 46:14Yeah, there's a like, and like I said, there are some shows where
- 46:17I'm just like, I just watch it. I watch it in dub.
- 46:20One of those shows was it's called Delicious and Dungeon.
- 46:24It's on Netflix. It's really good.
- 46:27You actually would probably enjoy that.
- 46:28So it's basically it's like a fantasy anime and they do like
- 46:32fantasy stuff. They're like in a dungeon and
- 46:34they're like dungeon crawling basically, like trying to find
- 46:37this one guy's sister that they lost on a previous adventure,
- 46:41but they have no money. And so they end up hiring this
- 46:44guy who lives in the dungeons. And that guy like teaches them
- 46:48how to cook food by killing the dungeon monsters.
- 46:51The monsters that live in the dungeon.
- 46:53Yeah, anime food is awesome. Exactly.
- 46:55Oh, it's so good. Can't watch that?
- 46:56Hungry. No.
- 46:57So, yeah, So I watched. I watched that in full dub
- 46:59because I knew the guy who voiced Senchi is is sung one who
- 47:06is a prolific YouTube and has been on the in the YouTube
- 47:10sphere for years and years and years that.
- 47:12Korean guy from LA. Yeah, sung one.
- 47:14Yeah. Oh shit, that's funny.
- 47:16Yeah, he's funny. Yeah, he's very funny.
- 47:18And so I know he's, you know, he's done a lot of other like,
- 47:21VAVA work, like over the years. Obviously he was in K Pop Demon
- 47:25Hunters. I'm pretty sure he voiced one of
- 47:26the characters in K Pop Demon Hunters.
- 47:28I can't remember which one. The only anime I've watched is
- 47:31every Studio Ghibli film. Yeah, that's I've watched all
- 47:35of. Them they are.
- 47:36They are great. Yeah, but that's like the most
- 47:38basic answer. No, not really.
- 47:41No. I would say like, I think DBZ is
- 47:43the most basic answer because I think every kid, every kid
- 47:47wanted every kid wanted to fucking go Super Saiyan.
- 47:50Naruto also I think is another one that a lot of a lot of kids
- 47:54watch Pokémon. Pokémon, yeah Pokémon, but yeah,
- 47:58Pokémon yeah Pokémon was like Pokémon Nancy at the same time.
- 48:03Yeah, since you brought up Delicious and Dungeon, how about
- 48:05my favorite anime about food? Food Wars?
- 48:07Do you ever watch that one? No, I've never watched food
- 48:10wars. Oh God.
- 48:12The whole premise of. This like show the food and
- 48:14you're just like, I know it's not real, but I would the.
- 48:18Whole premise is that the main character cooks so well that
- 48:21when he feeds his food to people it blows their clothes off.
- 48:24Yeah, they it's, yeah, they get so incredibly horny by this
- 48:31spook. Just for the food.
- 48:33Specifically for the food. Yeah.
- 48:35Have you seen what countries listen to your podcast?
- 48:38Can you do that yet? Yeah, OK.
- 48:40Because I was going to say like, I feel like that is the fucking
- 48:45funniest shit, I hope. That we get a lot of Russia and
- 48:47a lot of Brazil for this episode.
- 48:49I hope. So I hope Brazil listens in
- 48:52droves. Yeah, we were actually trying to
- 48:54go down. We want to do a tour down.
- 48:56There trying to go. We want to do, we want to do a,
- 48:58we want to do a basement tour in Brazil.
- 49:00We're not sure if. That's awesome.
- 49:02We not, we don't. I don't care if they don't.
- 49:03I don't care if they have basements.
- 49:05We're going to call it our our Brazil basement tour.
- 49:08Regardless of whether they're not they have.
- 49:10Vocete oyos Lindus, You have beautiful eyes.
- 49:13Vocete Oyos. Lindus, Jack.
- 49:16Actually. Does Jack actually does?
- 49:19Speak Jack actually does speak Portuguese.
- 49:21Relatively well, actually. I feel like you don't know that.
- 49:24You just hear me speaking occasionally with our friend
- 49:28Louise and you're like, he's probably good.
- 49:30Hey Jack, it's because I'm a dumb American that does not know
- 49:34another language, so I even if you were.
- 49:37Saying a dumb American who also. Doesn't know it doesn't matter.
- 49:40You like speak in like what I assume are full sentences and
- 49:44that is more than I can do. Just me being like, so how do
- 49:48you say bird? It's like, impressive, you know,
- 49:51like, so like, what's the word for like dog?
- 49:56Our friend was talking about how he jumped out of a plane and I
- 50:00was, oh, yeah. And I was like, I had to stop
- 50:02the conversation. I was like, did you say jumped
- 50:04out of a plane? Did you say you said jumped out
- 50:07of a plane? Right.
- 50:07He was like, yes. And they went right back.
- 50:09And I was like, and I couldn't hear anything else, right.
- 50:14He was like, so he was just talking about skydiving and I
- 50:17was like. So you guys are obviously
- 50:25touring Brazil. Is that actually booked or
- 50:28you're just looking to book it currently?
- 50:30It's not booked. That's not booked.
- 50:32It's not booked. We don't.
- 50:33We don't even know who could book that book that I don't know
- 50:35who could book. That obviously you're listeners,
- 50:38yeah, yeah. Listeners, if you're in Brazil,
- 50:40if you know anyone who is Brazilian, that would OfferUp
- 50:43their domicile. We won domicile.
- 50:47You know that, like, how Shakira played like Copacabana Beach
- 50:52like a couple months ago and it was like, to like, millions and
- 50:55millions of people. Yeah, right.
- 50:56We want to do that. Yeah.
- 50:57We want to do what? We just want to do what Shakira
- 51:00did and play for millions and millions of people and call out
- 51:02your deadbeat husband. Yeah.
- 51:04In front of millions of people. That was the most elite ship
- 51:08ever. So funny there's.
- 51:09There are some amount of single moms in this country and I'm one
- 51:13of them. That's awesome.
- 51:14There's a there is a there is a reason why we have a full song
- 51:18about Shakira. Because she's elite.
- 51:20She's the goat. So you guys have a song about
- 51:22Shakira? You have a song about One Piece?
- 51:25Yeah. Is is your song about Shakira on
- 51:26your EP that that you guys released earlier this year?
- 51:29It is. It's called the.
- 51:30It's called The Sun Goes Down. I like the idea of not promoting
- 51:35our band on a podcast. Like this is a great idea for a
- 51:38podcast? Yeah, I like it.
- 51:39You're just doing fun. I fucking hate when, like you
- 51:42listen to a a comedy podcast and it's just two comedians talk
- 51:46about doing stand up. That fucking blows.
- 51:49And it's kind of the same when like bands just talk about like,
- 51:51yeah, so like it's scales. That's the same thing.
- 51:55That's boring. You know what I mean, dude?
- 51:58So like I have like a scale and I play the low notes 1st and I
- 52:02go, I go up that. Are people talking about their
- 52:06artistic process? Yeah, the memes like what's your
- 52:09artistic process? What's How did you guys name
- 52:11your band? Well, that's easy.
- 52:15What tuning do you play in? You guys have beauty flies,
- 52:17obviously. Yeah, we play in E.
- 52:19Flat, yeah. Oh, that's because that's
- 52:22because Jack, that's what Jack likes to play in.
- 52:24That's. Because I like, I like nines in
- 52:26E flat, because I like the way that that feels.
- 52:28Yeah, I like light strings in E flat.
- 52:30And we we got our name from an over the garden wall reference.
- 52:33Yeah, because we both, we both love that show.
- 52:37My my sister went to high school with Pat McHale, the guy who did
- 52:40that show. So I think it's so good and in
- 52:43my hometown. That came up on like an episode
- 52:45I just did. We were talking about Over the
- 52:47Garden Wall and how it's like an annual tradition just.
- 52:50Every October. We're about to, Yeah, we're
- 52:52about, I think. I think Jack and I will
- 52:53probably. Eat mushrooms and watch a couple
- 52:56episodes. Yeah.
- 52:57Yeah, watch. Well, we might watch the whole
- 52:58thing. Yeah.
- 52:59Oh yeah. It's only like 9 minutes.
- 53:00It's really short. Yeah, they're like 10 minutes.
- 53:03Yeah, it's like really short. Yeah, and it's a perfect.
- 53:06Perfect watch. I'm not a I'm not a fall guy,
- 53:09though. I'm I'm summer you.
- 53:12You do love summer. Fucking love summer, Yeah.
- 53:15I love spring. Where do you guys live?
- 53:17Ohio, Columbus, OH OK. I can see that being more of a
- 53:22like I love summer kind of state, like where I'm I'm in
- 53:24North Carolina right now. It's like 110° outside and it
- 53:28and like 100% humidity. I'm like, please bring the fall,
- 53:31please bring the winter. I actually think I'm in the
- 53:34minority in Ohio. I think most people like fall.
- 53:38Yeah. I think people like they're like
- 53:40fall. Yeah, winter.
- 53:42I don't know anybody that likes winter.
- 53:45I this is a hot take, but we don't have cold enough winters.
- 53:50Are we in Ohio? Yeah, I OK, the winters are.
- 53:53Not cold enough? No, but they are yes.
- 53:55They are fucking miserable. They're miserable, yes.
- 53:59But they're not. It's not because it's cold.
- 54:01Yeah, it's because the weather. Sucks the sun goes away that
- 54:06like this the we have what's it called Wright Patterson?
- 54:10Is that the Air Force Base? Yeah, yeah.
- 54:11Wright Patt. Yeah.
- 54:12Wright Patt Air Force Base is in central Ohio.
- 54:15Because it's so cloudy here, they knew that nobody could get
- 54:21satellites overhead to look at. Yeah.
- 54:23For long enough to take in the information.
- 54:25Yeah. So that's what our winters are
- 54:27like. But we like you can't go ice
- 54:29skating. No.
- 54:31I went ice skating for a week last year.
- 54:33Because it doesn't get it doesn't get cold.
- 54:34Enough it doesn't get that cold. Yeah, it doesn't stay below
- 54:36freezing for like. Very long.
- 54:38Months. You know what I mean?
- 54:40Like we just we get all of the bad parts of winter snow cold,
- 54:45Yep, no sun, Yep, not being able to eat yellow snow, Yep, and
- 54:49then none of the good parts, which is like.
- 54:52And sometimes we get tornado, sometimes we get tornadoes in
- 54:55winter, which is crazy. And I'm so scared of.
- 54:58Tornadoes. Yeah.
- 54:59Snownadoes. Snownadoes.
- 55:03We were at a bar the other day and I was and I was trying to
- 55:06leave and as I leave all of everybody's phone just goes and
- 55:11it was like tornado warning and we were in this the bars below
- 55:16ground. Yep.
- 55:16So I was like fuck, the safest place to be is to drink another
- 55:1950 beers. I.
- 55:22Have to drink 4. 100 more, yeah. Shucks Dang, and I was down
- 55:26there for another like hour and a half just chugging Yeah
- 55:30because I couldn't legally go outside.
- 55:32Yep. Yeah, I'm so afraid of
- 55:34tornadoes. Yeah.
- 55:35It's a safety issue. You really you got to drink
- 55:38beers and stay underground when the Tornadoes.
- 55:40Come have you ever been, have you ever been on the road, like
- 55:43when a tornado warning happens? Have you ever had to do that?
- 55:46Have you ever had to do like the duck and cover?
- 55:48No. Yeah, you had to do that.
- 55:50Oh, yeah, Yeah. So like you're, you're on like a
- 55:52country Rd. There's no houses like, and
- 55:57there literally are tornadoes coming.
- 55:59You park the car, you find the nearest ditch.
- 56:02Yeah, you. Just low, yeah, you get, you get
- 56:05in the nearest ditch and you just cover your head and you
- 56:08just wait. See, I'm not from the Midwest.
- 56:11Right. I know you're from Jersey.
- 56:13So I've only had, like, a couple years of tornadoes.
- 56:16Yeah. And Midwesterners act like
- 56:18they're just a little inconvenient.
- 56:20Yeah. They're like, oh, I have to go
- 56:22downstairs. Yeah.
- 56:23Like I act like. Tornadoes like the it's like the
- 56:26one natural disaster that you like.
- 56:28It's a tornado and everybody goes outside to look right?
- 56:31Everybody goes. Everybody goes outside.
- 56:33Look, their response is this. Hey, this is Hey Jack, this is
- 56:38an audio medium. We we do it in video too.
- 56:43Publish YouTube just so that you have I think.
- 56:45They could hear me stand up so. You have a clippable moment.
- 56:51We work. We've worked with some people
- 56:54where they're like, yeah, I just like go out and look for it.
- 56:58I'm one of those people. And then if it's close I do
- 57:00whatever. Yeah, I'm one of those people.
- 57:01That's crazy. That's cool, I I like it.
- 57:04Yeah, 1 landed in Columbus like a couple weeks ago.
- 57:07Yeah, put. Put some.
- 57:09Put a tree on the House. Put a.
- 57:10Tree on his house. Yeah.
- 57:12Friend of the pod Tornadoes. My the tree that was on my
- 57:15house. Yeah, Ohio is crazy because
- 57:21here's the OK, here's another hot take about Ohio.
- 57:25I hate that people call Ohio the Midwest because there's nothing
- 57:28fucking W about it. It pisses me off.
- 57:31We are in the Eastern Time zone, for God's sakes.
- 57:35Well, there's nothing W about Ohio.
- 57:37I will die. I will die on this fucking hill.
- 57:41Phil, you might have to cut this.
- 57:42I'm not trying to catch the smoke, dude.
- 57:44I'm not trying to catch Midwest. I hate that Ohio is considered
- 57:48the Midwest. It's so dumb.
- 57:50It's stupid. But it's not East Coast like
- 57:53it's not. It's not East Coast, but it's
- 57:54not West. It's not West.
- 57:56It's not West. The Midwest is an interesting,
- 58:02it's very interesting. Midwest, because when we came
- 58:04over here we didn't think anything else was passed.
- 58:07Because like. Colorado should be the Midwest,
- 58:10probably, yeah. And it's not.
- 58:11It's called the central United States.
- 58:14It's central. How is something to the right
- 58:18central West? But that's mountain time.
- 58:22It is mountain time. Central United States like I
- 58:26have you some. Will look at the taxonomy.
- 58:28I think we're, I think we're, we're missing the mark here,
- 58:30America. Let's figure it out.
- 58:32Yeah, you're getting heated. Dude pissing me off.
- 58:35You're supposed to be talking about nerdy shit and you're
- 58:37like, I hate geography. I.
- 58:39Do. I hate, I hate, I hate, I hate
- 58:42planets. I.
- 58:43Yeah, no, planets are planets. Rule.
- 58:45Planets are sick. There's Infinity planets out
- 58:47there. Yeah, that's also where we want
- 58:52to tour because I heard that rollerblading is really big
- 58:54there. In North Korea.
- 58:55Yeah, N Koreans. So there was a guy who wrote a
- 58:57book about. You guys would be huge in North
- 59:00Korea. What'd you say?
- 59:01You guys would be huge in North Korea.
- 59:04We like basketball statutorily. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:08That's. Also, yeah, we're.
- 59:09Pretty tall. We're average height.
- 59:13I think 16 compared to North Koreans you're probably tall. 6
- 59:16even. That's pretty tall, okay.
- 59:18But yeah, there was a guy who wrote a book.
- 59:20He was Kim Jong UNS chef, OK? And he wrote a book about his
- 59:25time as Kim Jong Un chef. And he was like, Kim Jong Nam is
- 59:29not going to be the president. He's a psycho, OK?
- 59:33He was the guy who got in trouble for going to your
- 59:37Disney. Oh he he got a fake passport.
- 59:40He got the Brazilian passport and he got that.
- 59:42Yes. And they were like Kim Jong Un
- 59:44or Kim Jong. Yeah, Kim Jong Un is going to be
- 59:47the next one. Yeah, but he's pretty normal.
- 59:49He just likes basketball and rollerblading and I was like,
- 59:52there has to be video of Kim Jong Un rollerblading in North
- 59:56Korea. And I Googled it and it's like
- 59:58the number one pastime. Do you think?
- 1:00:00He do you just rollerblade around?
- 1:00:02Like if they need to get into town they on the back of a bike
- 1:00:04on rollerblades into town. Do you think he likes basketball
- 1:00:07so much because Dennis Rodman spent a lot of time over there?
- 1:00:11I think no. I think it goes the other way
- 1:00:13around. I think he likes Dennis Rodman
- 1:00:14because he was obsessed with the 90s Bulls.
- 1:00:17OK. He went to think, he went to
- 1:00:20private school in Switzerland and he just watched basketball.
- 1:00:26So my understanding, and it's a very loose understanding because
- 1:00:30it's based off of my wife watching Korean dramas about
- 1:00:35people getting stuck in North Korea and me watching as she's
- 1:00:40watching from across the room. I think they're just like stuck
- 1:00:43in the 90s there. I think like is like North Korea
- 1:00:47just kind of it's like going back in time to the 90s.
- 1:00:50Yeah, now that you say that, I lied.
- 1:00:51Like basketball, rollerblading. Yeah, like that's.
- 1:00:55Well, you've said to say you've said this.
- 1:00:57Well, maybe not the 90s, but you've said water parks.
- 1:01:00You said Finland is stuck in like the 80s.
- 1:01:02Well, I have kept you guys extra time.
- 1:01:05Anything else? We fucking love that we've been
- 1:01:07doing this even if you weren't here bro.
- 1:01:08Yeah, actually this is basically how I believe that.
- 1:01:11Nice conversation to go I've. Had to do absolutely nothing for
- 1:01:15this podcast. This has been the easiest job of
- 1:01:17my life. You're welcome.
- 1:01:19You're yeah, you are. You're welcome.
- 1:01:22I know that you feel will come across some bands where you're
- 1:01:25like, you love their music and you're like excited to talk to
- 1:01:28them. And when you ask them the first
- 1:01:30question, you're going to be like, Oh no, they're idiots.
- 1:01:36Oh no, they're non verbal morons.
- 1:01:42And. You know when I find that, when
- 1:01:44I find that that niche. Please.
- 1:01:47Oh, you will that that exists. My favorite band that's like
- 1:01:51that is Chon. You remember Chon?
- 1:01:54They were they were maybe like the best guitar players out
- 1:01:58there. OK, They their music is so fun.
- 1:02:01It's so good. And then they would do an
- 1:02:03interview and they would somebody would be like, so like,
- 1:02:06what was up with the new record? And they would outright have to
- 1:02:09be like, I'm not really good at explaining stuff.
- 1:02:13So like we had like, our songs and we like, recorded them with
- 1:02:18a guy and yeah, like, that's there.
- 1:02:23If I wonder if you would ask them about like Pokémon like how
- 1:02:28well that conversation would have gone, could have gone
- 1:02:30really well. You don't know.
- 1:02:31You never know. Good.
- 1:02:33I can't imagine them coming up with like the sentence, like,
- 1:02:35yeah, my boy, Ditto. That's my.
- 1:02:38Boy. Ditto.
- 1:02:40That is your boy. Your boy is Ditto.
- 1:02:41OK. All right, I think I'm actually.
- 1:02:43Do you know there is a Pokémon that actually like ice skates
- 1:02:46though, right? Who's that?
- 1:02:47It's Mr. Rhyme. No, it's the one that you didn't
- 1:02:50like at all. I don't like that at all.
- 1:02:52Yeah, I I feel like I'm also like Cubone.
- 1:02:54I always liked Cubone. Oh, even though he's tragic.
- 1:02:58Because you wear the. Because you there's his skull.
- 1:03:01Up his dead skull, do you? Think, yeah.
- 1:03:03Do you think that Cubone has like, the same kind of appeal
- 1:03:06as, like, Boba Fett? Like you're like that guy has a
- 1:03:09really cool mask and I want to be him just a little.
- 1:03:11I think Cubone has more appeal than Boba Fett, yeah.
- 1:03:17I I don't know. I'm just wondering like, is the
- 1:03:19appeal, is like the angle of the appeal the same?
- 1:03:22You know what I mean? And here's because here's the
- 1:03:24thing about I think, and I'm not like super tight into the Star
- 1:03:27Wars like lore or Canon. I think people hated Django
- 1:03:32Fett. I think people, I think, I think
- 1:03:35people hated Django Fett. They were just cool with Boba
- 1:03:38Fett being a bounty hunter. And then they had to introduce
- 1:03:41Django Fett as this like, dad, this tragic, this tragic ending.
- 1:03:47He just gets absolutely mauled by by Mace Windu.
- 1:03:53And then that's how Boba Fett becomes Boba Fett.
- 1:03:56Then Boba Fett puts on his skull.
- 1:03:59Yeah. Yeah, but I.
- 1:04:02Yeah, but I. Hugh Bonefication of Star Wars.
- 1:04:04Yeah, we've always said this, but again.
- 1:04:06Bonefication. *. Wars one.
- 1:04:07I think Cuban did it first, and I think Cuban did it better.
- 1:04:11Cuban did it better. Cuban did it better.
- 1:04:12Rules and like I kind of like dark back stories.
- 1:04:17Like I find myself kind of like rooting for bad guys in store in
- 1:04:21like, certain. Except for the Joker.
- 1:04:23The Joker can go fuck himself. What about Voldemort?
- 1:04:26No, Voldemort's weird. Voldemort's picking on children,
- 1:04:31you know what I mean? He's basically He also is wizard
- 1:04:34Hitler. He's wizard Hitler.
- 1:04:36I saw, I saw that movie when it came out.
- 1:04:39Just the last Harry. Potter, Wizard Hitler.
- 1:04:42No, I saw Wizard Hitler when it came out and I didn't understand
- 1:04:46what was going on at all. Yeah, I felt like a time
- 1:04:49traveling news reporter and people are crying around me and
- 1:04:53like, who are these people and why are we sad?
- 1:04:56Why is this? Why is this?
- 1:04:58Why is this bald man picking on children?
- 1:05:01Doesn't he have somewhere to be? Where's his nose?
- 1:05:05Where's his nose? Why is he hanging out with this
- 1:05:07big? Snake.
- 1:05:09Doesn't he have like a job? Are there jobs in Wizardville?
- 1:05:16Is everybody either a teacher, a student, or just back just just
- 1:05:22a mom or dad? That's what I just want to cat.
- 1:05:25I want to cap off. I want to, I want to cap off
- 1:05:28this Harry Potter, this Harry Potter conversation with fuck JK
- 1:05:31Rowling. Fuck JK Row.
- 1:05:32Yeah. Thank you.
- 1:05:33That's obvious. Fuck JK Rowling.
- 1:05:36Yeah, that is the official stance of this podcast.
- 1:05:39Hell yeah. The official stance of our band
- 1:05:42is we have tenants rights. We have 6.
- 1:05:43We have 6, we have 6 tenants that you, you have beautiful
- 1:05:46eyes. Those by #1.
- 1:05:48Hold on. I got my pen.
- 1:05:49Let me. OK.
- 1:05:49Yeah, Write it down. I'm ready.
- 1:05:51Oh, hey, we just Is that a? Thing that.
- 1:05:54Apparently I don't. Know not when we try it again.
- 1:05:57Dude, yeah, maybe just once. Oh, there it goes.
- 1:05:59There it goes. Oh, that one's backwards.
- 1:06:02All right. Number one, it's crazy. 6
- 1:06:05tenants of you have beautiful eyes #1 trans rights.
- 1:06:10Got it 2. #2 fuck ice, fuck ice. Oh, now we got balloons.
- 1:06:15Now we got balloons. It kind of undercuts our
- 1:06:16message. #3 show feet, show feet.
- 1:06:24Yeah, show feet. Yeah, show feet #4. #4 Abortion
- 1:06:29is healthcare. #5. #5 Free Palestine.
- 1:06:35And #6 the most important. One number six give dogs
- 1:06:39weapons. Give dogs feel like #3 and #6
- 1:06:43are the outliers in this, than that in that.
- 1:06:45No, I think they align pretty well.
- 1:06:47Yeah, I think they're all right. My dog ate a peanut butter belly
- 1:06:51sandwich on some weapons. Wait, what did you say?
- 1:06:55What kind of weapons are we giving dogs?
- 1:06:57Why, any weapons whatever. Whatever they can hold in their
- 1:06:59mouth. Yeah, because they don't got
- 1:07:01thumbs. They don't have humps.
- 1:07:03Nope, they don't have. They don't have 10 toes.
- 1:07:08They don't have 16. They have 16.
- 1:07:10They have 9 on their back feet, front feet and 10 on their back
- 1:07:13feet. I don't know, something like
- 1:07:15that. And they walk on their toes.
- 1:07:18Just like how horses walk on their toenails.
- 1:07:20Yeah, that's. I'm afraid they had thumbs.
- 1:07:23Do you think dogs would be the dominant species?
- 1:07:26No, because I think dogs. Are #2 I think their dogs are
- 1:07:29definitely #2. Yeah, but I think they're just
- 1:07:31still, I think they just still want and crave affection.
- 1:07:37Well, that's the the thing that separates Ant like dogs from
- 1:07:40wild animals is dogs give up and to humans to solve their
- 1:07:45problems. Yeah.
- 1:07:46Like that's been bred into them now.
- 1:07:48Yeah. So like even if they had thumbs,
- 1:07:50the second they the jar is too hard to open, they're like Dad,
- 1:07:56dad, Dad, I can't open the jar. Oh, Dad, come on.
- 1:08:01I can't open the jar. Dad, help, please.
- 1:08:04I can't. I can't open this jar.
- 1:08:06I. Just want this peanut.
- 1:08:08I can't. Open the peanut butter bag.
- 1:08:11I can't even eat the peanut butter.
- 1:08:12Come on guys. Now, well, I think my dog would
- 1:08:15have no once he got it open, then he was.
- 1:08:18He'd go to go to town. At first.
- 1:08:20Yeah, but he'd just be licking it.
- 1:08:21He'd just be licking it for over and over for hours.
- 1:08:23Yeah. As yeah.
- 1:08:25That's why, that's why I think humans.
- 1:08:26That's why dogs. My hot take is.
- 1:08:28Humans can eat peanut butter way faster than dogs.
- 1:08:31Oh, that's your hot? Did you say that's your hot
- 1:08:34take? That's my that's.
- 1:08:36My hot take. Chat.
- 1:08:39Let's see if that's real. I don't know if that's.
- 1:08:41True chat. And that's the stance you're
- 1:08:42running on for election. That's the pillar that you're
- 1:08:45running on for election. Humans can eat peanut butter
- 1:08:49faster. The dogs.
- 1:08:51I can't do anything and. They should always.
- 1:08:53Stand on business. We stand on business around
- 1:08:55here. I don't think that's I don't.
- 1:08:57I can't do anything faster than my dog without technology, you
- 1:09:01know what I mean? Like if I want to go faster than
- 1:09:03my dog, I need a bike. Yeah, Yeah, that's true.
- 1:09:06If I want to definitely cannot outrun my dogs, that's
- 1:09:10absolutely true. That's fair.
- 1:09:11Yeah, Yeah, I, yeah, I would agree with that.
- 1:09:13I. Couldn't outswim my dog.
- 1:09:16My dog can swim. That's he's like a well, here's
- 1:09:20a Russian Baltic fleetsman. Well, yeah, you have such.
- 1:09:23Well, here's The thing is you have your fat ass.
- 1:09:25I do have my family. You're you're like the you're
- 1:09:27like the one that sank. Not conducive to like water.
- 1:09:31Yeah, I think like a stone. Yeah.
- 1:09:33So that's the one sport that women are way better than men at
- 1:09:38swimming is long distance swimming.
- 1:09:40Yeah, because they're more buoyant, 100%.
- 1:09:42And it's like, I'm not, I'm still, even though I have a fat
- 1:09:45ass, I still sink like a stone. Like I have really vivid
- 1:09:50memories of my mom as a kid being like, all you do is arch
- 1:09:53your back and you float. And I remember just like so let.
- 1:09:57Me just she was like, it's you have beautiful eyes.
- 1:10:00Thinks that women are worse at sports than men.
- 1:10:06Got it. Hey, you know what?
- 1:10:12Thanks, Phil. Thanks so much for having us.
- 1:10:14Thanks so much. We really appreciate this.
- 1:10:16I have to go to a PWHL game to make up for this.
- 1:10:20I need, I need to Columbus A-Team.
- 1:10:21I need to go home and hug my doctor partner.
- 1:10:26Doctor partner because women can be doctors.
- 1:10:30And here's the thing women can read regardless of whether or
- 1:10:33not they enjoy our music. Well, no.
- 1:10:35If they like our music, then they forget, they unlearn.
- 1:10:38That's fine. I think that's fair.
- 1:10:40Right, I don't know. I can't read I.
- 1:10:42Can't read. That's somebody if you have
- 1:10:47beautiful eyes, thinks women are bad at sports.
- 1:10:52Yeah, I went to a PWHL game. You have the best.
- 1:10:57Time. Yeah, dude, I had the best.
- 1:10:59So did your mom. My mom was in was like, I don't
- 1:11:01know if this is going to be fun. This is.
- 1:11:02PWA so the W professional. OK, I was wondering what the P
- 1:11:07was. Professional.
- 1:11:08Yeah. They need to they well, I went
- 1:11:11to go see the New York Sirens, which is all just SpongeBob
- 1:11:15themed stuff. So whenever anything happens,
- 1:11:19everybody goes but my mom. Like after we were there for
- 1:11:24like 5 minutes, my mom was like, this is my personality there.
- 1:11:27Yeah, I love this. She was like, I love this so
- 1:11:29much. I this is all I want to do.
- 1:11:30Yeah, hey, shout out to the shout out to the United States
- 1:11:33women's hockey team for bringing home the only gold, right?
- 1:11:38No, the only the only hockey gold.
- 1:11:40That's not true. The Paralympics?
- 1:11:41The US. Oh yes, sorry.
- 1:11:42The US Paralympics also won. Thank you.
- 1:11:44So the only two Olympics, the only two hockey golds, because
- 1:11:51we don't, we don't have a, we don't have a, we don't have a
- 1:11:54men's team. Nobody has broken our hearts
- 1:11:55more than Quinn Hughes. Oh God, we had Quinn Hughes
- 1:11:58lyrics. We had to.
- 1:12:00We had to scram. Rewrote a whole song because of
- 1:12:03how he acted. That's so that hurts, dude.
- 1:12:07That sucks. That hurt.
- 1:12:08I mean, it didn't my feelings. It hurt for a second and then I
- 1:12:11said well fuck that guy. Fuck that guy.
- 1:12:13Fucking fuck Quinn Hughes. Yep.
- 1:12:15Fuck Quinn Hughes. Yeah, that's it.
- 1:12:20That's all I got. Yeah, that's.
- 1:12:21Phil, thanks for having. Yeah, Phil, thanks for having
- 1:12:23us. Thanks for thanks for coming on.
- 1:12:25Thanks for hanging out for an hour and a half and.
- 1:12:27How many episodes have you done so far?
- 1:12:30Oh my. Gosh, I released the fifth one
- 1:12:32today, but I've recorded four more.
- 1:12:36I think, wow, I think I've got, I think you guys.
- 1:12:38Are probably like. Yeah, dude, I saw that.
- 1:12:41He started him straight away. Oh shit.
- 1:12:44I was like, I feel like we would nerd out real, real good.
- 1:12:47Damn Phil, I was thinking you were in like your hundreds.
- 1:12:49Congratulations. No, I just started.
- 1:12:51I just started and then I'm having a blast.
- 1:12:53Yeah, absolutely. Thank you so much for having us.
- 1:12:56What was? What was the inspo?
- 1:12:58The inspo was really like, I don't know, I so.
- 1:13:04Are you familiar with the band Riley?
- 1:13:06Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so I knew, I knew Ryan
- 1:13:10from Riley was a big Dungeons and Dragon player.
- 1:13:12And I was like, OK, I think there's a lot of crossover
- 1:13:15between Dungeons and Dragons and like, emo bands.
- 1:13:19And I think this is a niche that I could tap.
- 1:13:23And then I started like trying to book guests and I couldn't
- 1:13:26really find the Dungeons and Dragons niche, but I did get
- 1:13:30people who were like, I'll come talk about wrestling or often
- 1:13:33talk about. Wrestling is massive in the
- 1:13:37Midwest. Like emo scene?
- 1:13:39Wrestling is tough though, because like once you are a
- 1:13:42wrestler, everything else you do is rest is yes.
- 1:13:46So like if I was a wrestler and we had this band, this band then
- 1:13:51becomes wrestling. Yeah.
- 1:13:52Like that whole, like everything you are once you're a wrestler
- 1:13:55is wrestling is. Yeah, it's a tough one.
- 1:13:59Phil, what's your I? You know, we didn't really get
- 1:14:01to talk a whole lot about D and DI Never played Jack has never
- 1:14:05played. I am an avid D&D player and
- 1:14:08enjoyer. What's your what's your go to?
- 1:14:11Are you normally a player? Are you Adm?
- 1:14:14I'm Adm right now. OK so I just started Dming a
- 1:14:17campaign. I think we're only like 3 or 4
- 1:14:21sessions in. My campaign is very dungeon
- 1:14:24crawler Carl based, like pulled into a like Faye dungeon and and
- 1:14:34like the arch Faye are like essentially running a dungeon
- 1:14:39crawler world in Faye run and it's been pretty fun.
- 1:14:42But I I have I've also played with the same guys.
- 1:14:48So the last character I played his name was Grug.
- 1:14:51He was a goblin obviously at some point, and he was a, he was
- 1:14:57a, a, a druid circle of spores. Yeah.
- 1:15:03Obsessed with mushrooms, his whole, his whole personality was
- 1:15:07like, I'm going to find mushrooms and I'm going to eat
- 1:15:09the mushrooms. That's how and, and at one point
- 1:15:13in the campaign, like towards the end of the campaign, no, I
- 1:15:17mean like halfway, we found a deck of many things and the way
- 1:15:21we play deck of many things is you can draw as many cards as
- 1:15:24you want whenever you want. And we play with like 150 card
- 1:15:29or it's 100 cards because you roll AD 100 and it's like 5050.
- 1:15:33Whether it's going to be a bad thing.
- 1:15:34At some point he drew a card and became like he died and became a
- 1:15:41lizard and changed class to like a monk.
- 1:15:46What was what was he was a monk cleric, I think.
- 1:15:49And and this is my my little, I don't know if you can.
- 1:15:52Hold your little mini. Thing hold your hand behind it,
- 1:15:54so focuses. It's just kind of like white.
- 1:15:56Yeah. There you go.
- 1:15:58Yeah, dude, did you 3D print? He's got his mushrooms, he's got
- 1:16:02his his cards. He had a he had a sword.
- 1:16:04He one of his other things is he like got pulled into like
- 1:16:08service of brand Oberous, which is like the halfling trickster
- 1:16:11God. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:14These days. Cool, Jack, I don't know why
- 1:16:15you're not into D and. DI don't have like I don't have
- 1:16:19moral objections to. It Yeah, yeah, he just hasn't
- 1:16:21played. Like we were, we were talking
- 1:16:22with somebody at work be hyphy. Yeah.
- 1:16:25And he was like, it took me 3 years to play.
- 1:16:28Yeah. Like we did like levels 1 to 20
- 1:16:30and it took three years. Yeah.
- 1:16:31And he just, I think he plays every week with like his
- 1:16:33buddies. Yeah, that.
- 1:16:35Me and my buddies. Yeah, the campaign that I was,
- 1:16:38the campaign that I was in, we even started, we started at like
- 1:16:41level 12 and we've been playing for four years and we're only up
- 1:16:45to like level 1317. So wow, year, like a year a
- 1:16:50level. Pretty much, yeah.
- 1:16:52It's but he was on. Oh, I'm sorry.
- 1:16:55Go ahead. No, no, no, please no.
- 1:16:56Go ahead. I.
- 1:16:57Was just gonna say we do like 3 every 3 or 4 sessions but then
- 1:17:00we just we try to play once a week but it ends up being like
- 1:17:03every other week. Sometimes we skip two or three.
- 1:17:06Just that's like the worst. That's the worst thing about it.
- 1:17:08Bands and D and DS are very similar.
- 1:17:10It's all about the schedule. It's hard to get.
- 1:17:13It's hard to get four or five people in the same room.
- 1:17:15Yeah. I don't know how ska bands do
- 1:17:17it. I I think they just show up and
- 1:17:20they just play what's in their heart.
- 1:17:21They're not. A bunch of foreign players, they
- 1:17:23don't have anything else going on.
- 1:17:24Yeah, but they're like a collective.
- 1:17:26Yeah, You know what I mean? Like whoever.
- 1:17:27Shows a collective. It's a cult more than a band if
- 1:17:30you're in a Scott band these days.
- 1:17:32Yeah, dude, I've been replaying Elvin ring you.
- 1:17:36Love Elvin. Ring, our bass player Bobby, was
- 1:17:39playing Elvin Ring for the first time and I was like, I was a
- 1:17:43little jealous. I was like dude to play it for
- 1:17:45the first. Time.
- 1:17:46I've never played. I've never played it.
- 1:17:49I've never played it but I've watched many people play it on
- 1:17:52YouTube. It's infuriating.
- 1:17:54Yeah, it. Is a very I.
- 1:17:56Did you play any souls games before elder bringers?
- 1:17:59You just dive right in I. Dove right in.
- 1:18:01I tried Sekiro after I played through the hard.
- 1:18:05I my friend was like, Sekiro's like a like a rhythm game.
- 1:18:09Like you kind of get that as like Bing, bop, boom, bam, Perry
- 1:18:11stab. Yeah, no, no, no.
- 1:18:16He was like, you're a musician. You should be good at the Bing
- 1:18:18bop, boom bop Bing bop Perry. I was like, dude, I just want to
- 1:18:22fucking blast fire through these guys.
- 1:18:24I couldn't get the mechanics down.
- 1:18:26He was like, no, you'll get, you'll get it and you'll become
- 1:18:29death. And I was like, Nope, you.
- 1:18:31Just kind of want to butt Nash. Or just like stand back and cast
- 1:18:35a spell. Can I be can I be honest?
- 1:18:37I have AI have a game for you. Let's go.
- 1:18:40It's called Kingdom Hearts. You want to you want to use
- 1:18:46magic? Do you just want to press
- 1:18:48buttons and demolish it and do really cool combos?
- 1:18:52Do you want to adventure with Donald Duck and Goofy?
- 1:18:55I didn't. No, I didn't think I did.
- 1:18:57Too bad. Like it's Kingdom Hearts, baby.
- 1:19:01I didn't. Say I've recorded probably about
- 1:19:0410 episodes now. Kingdom Hearts has come up in
- 1:19:06almost every single episode. It's.
- 1:19:08Because Kingdom Hearts is the fucking shit, dude.
- 1:19:11Kingdom Hearts, Friend of the Pop do.
- 1:19:12You not have the do you not have the brain power to understand
- 1:19:15what's going on, but you like the pretty colors.
- 1:19:18I love it's Kingdom Hearts because you don't even have you
- 1:19:21don't have to understand what's I understand what's going on in
- 1:19:23Kingdom Hearts and I and it's. Read.
- 1:19:27Yeah, I can't read. Feel like I feel like Jack if
- 1:19:30you got into Kingdom Hearts you could be Baltic naval fleet
- 1:19:34level of into the lore about the Kingdom Hearts lore yeah I.
- 1:19:42I once so this was way way way way back.
- 1:19:45This is before Kingdom Hearts 3 came out.
- 1:19:46So this would have been like 2018-2019.
- 1:19:49I had I had a friend who was getting married and she messaged
- 1:19:54me and she said hey, me and my husband want to buy Kingdom
- 1:19:56Hearts 3 because they're big Disney heads and they're like we
- 1:19:58want to play, we want to buy Kingdom Hearts 3 when it comes
- 1:20:00out. We haven't played any of the
- 1:20:02other Kingdom Hearts games which they were like Will.
- 1:20:04Be will we be lost? Which here's the thing.
- 1:20:06It was Kingdom Hearts 3, but there were eight games before
- 1:20:08it. Yeah, So.
- 1:20:12And she was like, what's going on?
- 1:20:14And I was like, I was like, Taylor, you have just asked me.
- 1:20:20The dumbest question. No, I was like, you have asked
- 1:20:22me the thing that has made me the most happiest in years.
- 1:20:26Where's your whiteboard and string?
- 1:20:27I sat down. I sat down and I typed out.
- 1:20:32I made her a dossier of everything that happens from
- 1:20:35Kingdom Hearts 1 all the way up until where we are, where we
- 1:20:38were going to be in Kingdom Hearts 3.
- 1:20:39Eight games later to three. It was 120 pages.
- 1:20:45I included pictures. I I I talked in detail about
- 1:20:49every single game that came between Kingdom Hearts 1 and
- 1:20:52Kingdom Hearts 3, and I gave it to her as a wedding present.
- 1:20:56Dude, that's I feel like you should publish this.
- 1:20:58I feel like that, yeah. No.
- 1:21:00Pretty well. Disney would kill me.
- 1:21:03I would get I. Disney would treat me like JFK.
- 1:21:09My head would be gone. That would be a war that we
- 1:21:13could not win. No, that's not a war I'm trying.
- 1:21:16To I will, I will go to war with I, I'm sorry to say this, Phil,
- 1:21:19but we had we had we on the first podcast we ever recorded,
- 1:21:23we declared war on the Carolinas.
- 1:21:26I would go to war. I yes, remember what I said
- 1:21:29about the Carolinas. No.
- 1:21:32I'm. Not from here, I just live here
- 1:21:34so. I called that we because we were
- 1:21:37trying to figure out who we were going to start beef with.
- 1:21:39And you said Miami and you're like, no.
- 1:21:41And I was like no, not listening.
- 1:21:42No, exactly. And I said we could start beef
- 1:21:44with the Carolinas. And you were like, what do you
- 1:21:46have against the Carolinas? And I said everybody in
- 1:21:48Carolina, not everybody, but most people in the Carolinas.
- 1:21:51Yeah, you went deep. I was like most people who were
- 1:21:53born and raised in the Carolinas.
- 1:21:55I know what you're doing. You spend $100,000 on your car
- 1:21:58and then you live in a fucking trailer.
- 1:22:01I think music is really missing beefs.
- 1:22:04Yes, we don't know who to start beef with.
- 1:22:07So I will go, I will go take two states.
- 1:22:09Yeah, I will go to war with the Carolinas.
- 1:22:10I will not go to war with Disney because that is a war.
- 1:22:13There's no like. Other Ohio bands that you guys
- 1:22:16could could beef with? No.
- 1:22:18I feel like they're all actually pretty.
- 1:22:19Cool. They're actually very cool.
- 1:22:21You get a chance to I, I don't know who I, I, I have to do a
- 1:22:25little bit of research. But if you get a chance to talk
- 1:22:26to like pallet knife, like pallet knife is super.
- 1:22:30Nice guys. They're on my list.
- 1:22:31They're on my list. I've got a.
- 1:22:33You can't, you can't see, but I've got a keyframe on my wall.
- 1:22:38It's one of my records. They.
- 1:22:39Actually are friends. They actually are friends of the
- 1:22:41pod. Like I win.
- 1:22:42They're cool guys, yeah. Alec is really cool.
- 1:22:44You. You.
- 1:22:45Put in a good word for me because I know those guys are
- 1:22:47nerds. I'd love to have them.
- 1:22:48They're. Really great.
- 1:22:49They're huge. Fucking nerds.
- 1:22:50Yeah, Manor. I mean that in the nicest.
- 1:22:52Yeah, they are huge nerds. Manor Gate is pretty cool.
- 1:22:55Those guys are pretty sick. They're just announced that
- 1:22:58their albums coming out. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:00New LP from them. I'm trying to think of who else
- 1:23:03is from Ohio that we know. It's cool.
- 1:23:04Like relatively well. Dimwit.
- 1:23:07There's a there's another Columbus pop punk band called
- 1:23:10Dimwit Pal Pal. They're from Cleveland, they're
- 1:23:14cool. Yep.
- 1:23:15Shout outs to Mario. Yeah, shout outs.
- 1:23:18He has no hummus vacuum. Or they're from Cleveland.
- 1:23:20I don't. Know yeah, they're like around
- 1:23:22here. My friend Zane was playing drums
- 1:23:25for them for a minute. Yeah, so they're cool.
- 1:23:27Bill Murray. Bill Murray's from Columbus.
- 1:23:31You guys could start beef with Bill Murray.
- 1:23:32No we, no he's. Cool, you know, you know, this
- 1:23:35came out today so I can I can release this.
- 1:23:38But the other day I was playing roller hockey at the rink by my
- 1:23:42house, and this guy is playing guitar and he's plugged into
- 1:23:46this like, pedal. And they were like, can we shoot
- 1:23:49over on this side? And I was like, yeah, I don't,
- 1:23:52it's a public park. I don't give a fuck.
- 1:23:53And then I saw them doing that. So I came over, I was like, what
- 1:23:56are you guys doing? And it was the guy was like, oh,
- 1:23:59I'm in a band called State Champs.
- 1:24:01This is Talon Electric. They make pedals in Columbus.
- 1:24:05Like that's what we're doing. And then I was like, oh, I'm in
- 1:24:07a Nemo band. Their heads exploded.
- 1:24:12Yeah, they were like this fucking hockey bro douche is
- 1:24:17fucking in an emo big a fucking E literally once an emo baby.
- 1:24:21I was like, yeah, we're called you have beautiful eyes.
- 1:24:23And they were like, don't hurt me.
- 1:24:28And then I like DM D them. And they were like, yeah, we're
- 1:24:30still trying to like, process what you were.
- 1:24:32Yeah, but yeah, no, John. They were in state champs.
- 1:24:38Yeah, they champs. The one the guy lives around
- 1:24:40here apparently OK or they were just like shooting promo for the
- 1:24:44video. The pedal just came out today so
- 1:24:46I'm not spoiling it, but I was like yo give me one of.
- 1:24:50Those. But yeah, Johnny.
- 1:24:52Fucking give me one or I'll fuck I'll.
- 1:24:53Beat you up? I was like kicking pucks at
- 1:24:56them. Oh yeah, Johnny, Johnny and Bill
- 1:25:00Murray, him and I, he, he used to go to the gym that I coach at
- 1:25:04right now. So we both hit, we both hit a
- 1:25:06four O 5 back spot in the same gym just like years apart, which
- 1:25:09is pretty rad. That's pretty rad.
- 1:25:11Josh Dunn of 21 Pilots lives in fucking Westerville with Debbie
- 1:25:16Debbie Ryan Debbie Ryan Hurt. His I've got a ton of great
- 1:25:20bands. It's crazy how many it has.
- 1:25:21Like how many Catholic state? Capitals make weird bands.
- 1:25:26Yeah, like Columbus has weird music.
- 1:25:28Yeah, The Devil Wears Prada is from here.
- 1:25:31There's There's Zombie EP came out 16 years ago.
- 1:25:34I've ripped that album when I was when I was in high school.
- 1:25:37Let's just, I'm trying to think of some other bands from
- 1:25:39Columbus that we could like, start a fight with that they're
- 1:25:41like they'd be. OK, with we could, we could
- 1:25:43potentially start a fight with Attack, Attack because I don't
- 1:25:47think that anymore. And also.
- 1:25:49Like now Johnny isn't a part of that band anymore.
- 1:25:52That's true. They're not a band I don't want.
- 1:25:55To start a fight with them, but they're.
- 1:25:57I saw that guy in concert. He was ripped.
- 1:25:59He's in too good shape. Yeah, trying to think KJ's going
- 1:26:06to be. First, today's really hard
- 1:26:07because. So say again I.
- 1:26:10Feel like music tastes hard because like, who are you going
- 1:26:12to beef with? Everyone's so cool, everyone's
- 1:26:14so nice. Yeah.
- 1:26:15Like, like, especially the emo scene, like we're.
- 1:26:18Going to be we're going to beef with Jared Leto.
- 1:26:20Yeah, we we have beef with Jared Leto.
- 1:26:22Yeah, fuck, we've got Jared Leto.
- 1:26:24Fuck, 30 Seconds To Mars. Yeah, fuck them.
- 1:26:28That's that's easy. Yeah.
- 1:26:29I'm trying to get creative. Like I feel like we need like
- 1:26:32enough. You can go after Ronnie Radke,
- 1:26:33everybody does, but he'll respond.
- 1:26:36Yeah, we need another like Taking Back Sunday brand new.
- 1:26:40So that's. What I'm saying like people,
- 1:26:42like people in Nemo bands are just too nice now.
- 1:26:45Yeah. You know, you don't get that.
- 1:26:46Taking Back Sunday Slash Other band that shall not be named.
- 1:26:50Yeah, fuck them. Yep.
- 1:26:52Although Taking Back Sunday is the worst live band I've ever
- 1:26:55seen. Oh.
- 1:26:57Maybe your beef is with Taking Back Sunday.
- 1:27:00Yeah, we'll have a perform live off with them.
- 1:27:05I think everybody can see that they can't hit a right note by
- 1:27:08mistake now. I'm good with that.
- 1:27:12I'm good, I'm good. Yeah.
- 1:27:13Take it back Sunday. Have a sing off with.
- 1:27:16Brayden, we hate you. I hate you.
- 1:27:18We hate. You damn those first albums are
- 1:27:21so sick though. You know you got to train till
- 1:27:26your idols become your rivals. Yes, yeah, exactly.
- 1:27:30Exactly. We're manifesting that.
- 1:27:31They're not even my arrival anymore.
- 1:27:33They're beneath me. They're beneath us.
- 1:27:34Yeah. Who?
- 1:27:36All right guys, it is past my bedtime.
- 1:27:39Yes, no, I. Really do appreciate.
- 1:27:41I think we ended this episode like half an hour ago and then
- 1:27:44just kept going on the dungeons and Dragons.
- 1:27:46Midwestern goodbye, baby. That's a Midwest goodbye.
