Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Camilla Belich: Labour Justice Spokesperson on consent laws
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: National's plan changed to sex consent laws. Getting very political
- 0:04Speaker 1: this morning. If re elected, they've said they would change
- 0:06Speaker 1: the law. It must be an active yes beforehand, not
- 0:09Speaker 1: just the absence of a no.
- 0:12Speaker 2: There are tens of thousands of people every year according
- 0:15Speaker 2: to the surveys, who are victim of sexual violence in
- 0:18Speaker 2: some way or form, and so this change is not
- 0:21Speaker 2: going to dramatically change that overnight, but it is sending
- 0:24Speaker 2: a clear signal.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Right joining us is Carmel about its Labor Justice spokesperson,
- 0:28Speaker 1: come a good morning, Good morning. What's the problem here?
- 0:33Speaker 3: Well, first of all, that is a policy that the
- 0:36Speaker 3: Labor Party agrees with and it's something that we've been
- 0:38Speaker 3: working on on a bipartisan basis to try and get
- 0:41Speaker 3: introduced to the House before this election.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Great, so what's the problem They don't want to do
- 0:47Speaker 1: it before the election.
- 0:49Speaker 3: They Yeah, they don't want to. So that's a real
- 0:51Speaker 3: shame actually, and we're really disappointed about that because you know,
- 0:54Speaker 3: not everything can be in our political system can be
- 0:57Speaker 3: put forward in a bipartisan manner. But this been something
- 1:00Speaker 3: that one of our committees of Parliament had been working on.
- 1:04Speaker 3: We'd had some work on drafting a bill together and
- 1:08Speaker 3: we'd had a briefing from the Hell and Clark Foundation
- 1:11Speaker 3: on some research that they've done onto this, and we'd
- 1:12Speaker 3: decided to move forward. And then unfortunately at our last meeting,
- 1:16Speaker 3: the National Party said that they were walking away from
- 1:19Speaker 3: it and they were going to do what they've done today,
- 1:21Speaker 3: which is release their own policy and campaign on it
- 1:24Speaker 3: for the election, rather than introducing it to Parliament and
- 1:27Speaker 3: making the change.
- 1:27Speaker 1: The justice that he receives the Justice Select committees under
- 1:30Speaker 1: the pump at the moment. I mean, is there realistically
- 1:33Speaker 1: room that started the election to do what it is
- 1:35Speaker 1: you're saying they should do.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Well. Look, I'm sit on the Justice Committee, so I'm
- 1:39Speaker 3: well aware of the amount of work that we have.
- 1:42Speaker 3: But the issue that the choice that the National Party
- 1:45Speaker 3: is making is they could make a choice to join
- 1:47Speaker 3: with other parties and get this issue on the order
- 1:50Speaker 3: paper and that means that it gets on the order
- 1:53Speaker 3: paper on the next member's day, it can have its
- 1:56Speaker 3: first reading and then it will be there until after
- 2:00Speaker 3: the election. No matter who is it means it happens.
- 2:04Speaker 1: It's a symbolic means it means it.
- 2:06Speaker 3: No, it means it happens. The National Party at the
- 2:08Speaker 3: moment is saying this, this will only happen if you
- 2:11Speaker 3: vote for us, and you know obviously and everything gets negotiated.
- 2:17Speaker 3: So this is the way of guaranteeing it it will.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Happen if we vote for you, though too, wouldn't that
- 2:22Speaker 1: I mean, well.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah, what if it's something that there's a lot of
- 2:25Speaker 3: agreement on. But you know, I don't know about you,
- 2:27Speaker 3: but for me, I always think a bird in the
- 2:30Speaker 3: hand are when something you can guarantee will happen is
- 2:33Speaker 3: actually when priorities come up is much better and much
- 2:37Speaker 3: more suited than looking at you know what may happen
- 2:40Speaker 3: after the election.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Do you know what hope is therefore, bipartisanship in this country.
- 2:44Speaker 1: If when you do agree on something, you can't agree
- 2:47Speaker 1: to do it.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Well, I think it's a real lost opportunity. I think
- 2:51Speaker 3: it's a shame. And you know it's not too late.
- 2:53Speaker 3: The National Party can come back and they can support
- 2:55Speaker 3: this bill and we can make it happen.
- 2:57Speaker 1: All right, Hey, good to have you on the show
- 2:58Speaker 1: this morning. Come about labor just the spokesperson For more.
