- 0:01Do you actually have to be on cocaine to be on this park
- 0:03there? It's.
- 0:21A great day. What's up everybody?
- 0:34You're listening to yet another edition of Cocaine Willie, the
- 0:37official, a state representative on the college huddle.
- 0:40I'm your commissioner, Bob Trollsby.
- 0:42And as always, I'm joined by my Co host, the good chef Andre
- 0:45Napier. Fireball Matt will be joining us
- 0:48mid pod at some point, so look out for him if you're, if you're
- 0:52a Matt Marchasini fan, if you're here for Fireball Matt, nobody
- 0:55else. Hate to break it to you, he's
- 0:56not here yet, but he will be here at some point.
- 0:59Chef, how are you feeling without Matt here?
- 1:05You know, a little more comfortable, little more
- 1:08comfortable. There's a little bit more room
- 1:09here. Our heads are a lot bigger on
- 1:12the screen, which I love the the zoom in aspect of it, but I, I
- 1:17miss my boy Matt. You know, he, he's going to have
- 1:19a lot of insight and not that you don't, but you know, just
- 1:23bouncing it off of his shiny big head makes everything a little
- 1:28easier on the pod. I mean, I really don't.
- 1:31That's why I'm the host and not the not a contributor here.
- 1:35So I just, I throw it to y'all and let y'all cook and you're
- 1:38the good chef. So that's that's what you're
- 1:40best at. Before we dive into the episode,
- 1:43we do want to give a quick shout out to our first sponsor, Auntie
- 1:47Maze Parlor. You know him, You love them.

- 2:11since 74 is out. Like, yeah, that's right.
- 2:14That's right. Yeah.
- 2:16This. And.
- 2:17And those of you who are listening have already checked
- 2:18out by now, so that's OK. That's super cool.
- 2:21Yeah. Auntie Maze.

- 2:31Trivia, smackdown, pie in cocktails with therapy.
- 2:34If you're listening to this, you're too late.
- 2:36It happened tonight, January 13th.
- 2:39But don't be, don't be too forlorn.
- 2:42They are coming back to Auntie Maze Tuesday, January 27th.
- 2:46So two weeks from tonight, we've got the second iteration of Pine
- 2:50Cocktails for the month of January happening at the Parlor.
- 2:53We've also got Pride in the Parlor 3rd Anniversary Party
- 2:55that's happening Thursday, January 22nd.
- 2:58I'm going backwards. We're reading off next week's
- 3:00events. It doesn't matter.
- 3:02Auntie Maze Trivia Smackdown is happening Wednesday, January
- 3:0614th as well. And just to take a quick peek
- 3:09here, what's the cocktail tale of the week this week?
- 3:11Any guesses chef? Oh, we're going to, I'm, I'm
- 3:15going to assume we're thinking Valentine's Day theme.
- 3:21I would say maybe like, I don't even know.
- 3:27What do you eat on Valentine's Day?
- 3:30Maybe a chocolate covered strawberry cocktail?
- 3:33You do realize Valentine's Day is a month from now, right?
- 3:38That doesn't matter. You sell.
- 3:41You got to, you got to, you got to sell into this.
- 3:44I mean, maybe maybe it's a Martin Luther King Day style
- 3:47drink. Maybe it's like a a shot in
- 3:50Memphis kind of drink or something.
- 3:52Oh my God, let the record show the white guy on the pod did not
- 3:58say that. So it's a Martin Luther King.
- 4:01That's my. Guy, yes, shout out and also
- 4:04know the title of this. Probably not appropriate for
- 4:06that. The Cocktail of the Week This
- 4:08week is Blood and Sand is a $10 cocktail featuring monkey
- 4:15shoulders, Scotch, sweet vermouth, cherry morlaco and
- 4:19orange juice. That sounds delightful.
- 4:23I'm not going to lie, that sounds delightful.
- 4:25It's a lot better than what my cocktail was.
- 4:29Yeah, yeah, we won't be making any of those.
- 4:32That's for that's for sure. Yeah, check out Auntie Maze.
- 4:37They've got all sorts of stuff going on.
- 4:38They've got their cocktail the week.
- 4:39Go get a blood and sand. Hopefully you're not bleeding in
- 4:43the sand while you're drinking it.
- 4:44I will probably be bleeding in the sand while I'm drinking
- 4:46cocktails next week in Hawaii. Hey, I'm bored.
- 4:50Yeah, I will not be here next week.
- 4:51There will be no pod, at least from me next week.
- 4:54So I don't know if. There's going to be why I don't
- 4:56get an invite. I don't get any of that.
- 4:58What the hell is going? On Hey, my my wife is good at
- 5:03her job. That means we get to go to
- 5:04Hawaii and get a break from the kiddo.
- 5:07So I'm very much aware of that. Still love my child.
- 5:10Don't let it. Don't let don't let it get
- 5:12twisted. Everybody needs a break with
- 5:17that coach Klein's staff. We talked largely last week
- 5:20about the staff taking shape. We had most of the additions
- 5:24pretty much finalized. But then we get a news bomb, a
- 5:27news drop from Pete Thammel at ESPN on Saturday morning with
- 5:32the addition of Sean Gleason, current quarterbacks coach at
- 5:36Missouri, former offensive coordinator at Rutgers, Oklahoma
- 5:42State and Princeton getting added to the fold here.
- 5:47I don't know much about the guy, to be honest.
- 5:49I do know that Missouri's quarterback room was kind of
- 5:51garbage this year. How much of that was injuries?
- 5:54How much of that is prima donnas?
- 5:55How much of that is NIL in the transfer portal and how much of
- 5:58that is showing Gleason remains to be determined.
- 6:01But what's your reaction to the higher and and how do you think
- 6:06this fills out client staff just when you look at his staff
- 6:11holistically? Well, I, I think it was a little
- 6:14out of nowhere. I don't think that was on a lot
- 6:17of people's boards for, you know, somebody to coordinate the
- 6:21offense. It's it's a like, like we
- 6:24discussed last time, it's a title that doesn't go with a
- 6:29position group. So that's a, that's a very
- 6:31interesting way of doing it. I don't know how many offenses
- 6:35do that, I mean, or how many programs run it like that.
- 6:39But when your main, your head coach is probably going to be
- 6:42the main play caller, He's probably Shawn Gleeson will
- 6:45probably be in that more of administrative style, you know,
- 6:49overseeing every position, making sure practice runs
- 6:52smooth. Just to make sure Colin, as a
- 6:56first time head coach, you know, can you can grow into that
- 7:00position. It's going to take a little bit
- 7:01off Colin's shoulders in terms of how practice needs to be run.
- 7:05Can he spend time with the defense?
- 7:07All of those things, things that you learn as you go on how to
- 7:12balance being a head coach. So Sean Gleeson comes in there.
- 7:16He's had some really good offenses.
- 7:18I think schematically he's done some good things, even not so
- 7:23much at Rutgers. Rutgers was a bad deal.
- 7:25But you know, you come out of the that Rutgers fiasco, he goes
- 7:30back home after leaving Oklahoma State with was a really good
- 7:34offense for Oklahoma State. Spencer Sanders was there.
- 7:38I I mean, Chuba Hubbard, there was a lot of things going on
- 7:40with that Oklahoma State offense that I really liked.
- 7:42Rutgers, he goes back home, he's from New Jersey and COVID
- 7:47season. What can you take from that?
- 7:50I don't know, 2021, not great. 2022, I think he was still
- 7:55there. He gets fired six games in,
- 7:58averaging 12 points per game. But that Rutgers team was dog
- 8:02water. I mean, real bad, real bad.
- 8:05Just talent on the roster, just bad.
- 8:08They came a long way, you know, getting like a guy like Kyle
- 8:11Manungai to come out of that program.
- 8:15Well, yeah, Shawn Gleeson, his Princeton offense and he's he
- 8:19was such a young coach that coming up through the ranks.
- 8:23Maybe it it hit him a little too fast, but you never know.
- 8:26I mean, it takes some time. He's a becomes an analyst at a
- 8:31couple programs, bounces around, finds his way to being the
- 8:34quarterbacks coach at Missouri. I mean, I like broke both Pubula
- 8:40and who was the who's The Who was the quarterback before that?
- 8:45I think what was his name? Oh geez, the guy that we played
- 8:50a couple. Of times yeah yeah yeah I mean
- 8:52he wasn't terrible but they honestly what I got from his
- 8:58tenure at Missouri is that he was Brady Cook.
- 9:02He was a hell of a recruiter at Missouri in terms of bringing a
- 9:05quarterback talent all those things.
- 9:08So if as long as this Sean Gleeson role isn't expanded to
- 9:13the point where he's running the offense and Colin is taking a
- 9:17step back I think it'll be fine and then you can kind of play
- 9:21with it and and it helps a young quarterbacks coach that we have
- 9:25on the roster and in Ellsworth giving him somebody else to be
- 9:30in Avery's ear to help him guide him through being what a a
- 9:33quarterbacks coach needs you know to do.
- 9:36So it's going to be very interesting to see what his role
- 9:39is. I'm sure does he go out like
- 9:43similar to how Matt Wells and all every offensive coordinator
- 9:47at Kansas State has gone in front of the media and you know
- 9:50spoke what the game plan is going to be.
- 9:53It's going to be interesting to see if he's the one doing that.
- 9:56Obviously Collins going to have his own his own head coach press
- 10:00conference every week and Deshaun Gleeson kind of just
- 10:05like, like we were saying, you know, just organize everything.
- 10:10He coordinates the offense. That's what his job is.
- 10:13He coordinates it. He gets it where he's got to go
- 10:15and Colin calls the place. I mean, think about it similar
- 10:19to how the Chiefs operate with Andy Reid being the play caller,
- 10:21Matt Nagy or Eric the enemy prior to that being that, you
- 10:25know, more of that executive presence and and kind of
- 10:29agreeing with or disagreeing with the play caller.
- 10:31Hopefully being the eyes in the sky and being able to see some
- 10:34things up in the booth that maybe client isn't able to see
- 10:37from from his spot on the feet. And, and I'm hoping that he's a
- 10:41guy who can see the game. And in a in a way, like if he's
- 10:45up there with Lepak in the booth, We've all seen what what
- 10:48Lepak can do when he's teamed up with Klein kind of barking out
- 10:52what he's seen from from the defense schematically.
- 10:55I'm hoping that this can just be complimentary to that and and
- 10:58that he can, you know, approach the offense knowing that he's
- 11:02not being the the play caller. He can approach the offense from
- 11:05kind of more of that CEO mentality and and give Colin the
- 11:09ability to call the plays. Because I think if he's calling
- 11:11plays, I would feel probably a little bit differently about
- 11:14this higher just given that he had those responsibilities
- 11:17stripped of him when he was at Rutgers.
- 11:19It sounds like he and Gundy kind of mutually parted ways after
- 11:23that 2019 season. So, I mean, Gundy is his own
- 11:27guy. He's he's going to do his own
- 11:29thing. I'm not going to fault him for
- 11:31that. But yeah, it's just interesting.
- 11:33I it's definitely not the higher I expected.
- 11:35Not that I necessarily expected anybody, but I feel like all
- 11:39signs were pointing toward that. Wide receivers coach Mahaffey
- 11:42from from Green Bay, from the Packers organization.
- 11:45But yeah, it's just kind of a strange hire.
- 11:48But again, it's a guy who's been around football for a long time.
- 11:52You can spin it as positively or as negatively as you want to
- 11:54either way. But I think you can't need to
- 11:56see how things are going to play out.
- 11:58I think ultimately it means that Colin Klein is probably going to
- 12:01be the offensive play caller is what I'm looking into with this
- 12:05with this hire. Yeah.
- 12:06And I mean that's that's kind of what we all wanted.
- 12:09I mean, when Colin came on, we want his ability to coordinate
- 12:13offenses, run, bring his schemes, bring back what we had
- 12:18that magical run in 2022 and even 2023.
- 12:21The offense was really, really good.
- 12:22So, yeah, more of Colin Klein being in charge, you know, his
- 12:28hands on the wheel and then let everybody follow and help him
- 12:33guide the way. You know, he's the motor to this
- 12:35boat, motor boating. He's the motor to this boat, but
- 12:40you've got to have rudders and somebody on the steering wheel
- 12:43and you've got to be able to let him, you know, push you through
- 12:47the water. So I'm I'm I'm, I'm really
- 12:49excited for, you know, this staff finally coming together.
- 12:53They all seem like outside of the linebackers coach, they all
- 12:58seem like grinders on the recruiting trail as well.
- 13:02So that's something just we just have not had since, I don't
- 13:08know, Snyder 1.0. I I can't think of a staff that
- 13:11hasn't been an older staff. This is a younger staff, a a
- 13:15relatively younger staff that is willing to grind out on the
- 13:20recruiting trail. So it's it's just something
- 13:22refreshing that we haven't had at K state.
- 13:24Even under climbing. It was the same staff that we've
- 13:28had for a long time and they got some things done and some of the
- 13:30guys were carrying more of the load.
- 13:33I think this staff in particular on the recruiting trail is going
- 13:37to be, you know, everybody's in there, everybody's got their
- 13:41hand in the pot. They're trying to get the best
- 13:43talent available. And when you have better talent,
- 13:46it's somewhat easier to coach. So let's let's make it easier on
- 13:50the boys. What would you grade the the
- 13:54staff make up it overall like if if you had to put a letter grade
- 13:57on the entirety of the staff as it's assembled today, and let's
- 14:01not even consider analysts because I think some of them are
- 14:04official, some of them aren't. Not all of them are listed on
- 14:06the K state website. Even some of the guys have
- 14:09updated their BIOS or or maybe not, but but holistically, you
- 14:13look at the staff letter grade. What would you what would you
- 14:15slap on it for first year staff under Coach Klein?
- 14:18Well, I think Buddy Wyatt deserves a lot of credit for
- 14:23what he did for the defensive end room.
- 14:25Mind you, a lot of them left in the transfer portal and all
- 14:28that. And all that to be said, I think
- 14:31retaining him what was solid and he was AB coach for our staff at
- 14:36the time. I think he could still still
- 14:38remain that he's we're controlling the whole defensive
- 14:40line. So I think he feels like he just
- 14:42got a promotion basically. I think that's AB higher.
- 14:47So that is that remains the same.
- 14:51Look, Pat, going back to tight ends, I think that is an upgrade
- 14:55over what Luke Wells and and anything associated with the
- 14:58Wells name is going to be an upgrade.
- 15:01So Luke Wells, I mean, Brian Lepak, that goes back to, you
- 15:07know, a solid B plus he he had really solid tight ends.
- 15:12And so I'm going to, I'm keep that with what he had done
- 15:16previously. I can only imagine that he would
- 15:18keep that status quo. You know, Ward, absolute monster
- 15:26at wide receivers coach. I'm glad we got him.
- 15:28I mean, Patterson at running backs coach, I think Brian
- 15:34Anderson was a stud at running backs go to he was a monster at
- 15:39coaching up running backs, whether that was with less
- 15:42talent OR whatever, finding diamonds in a rough.
- 15:45Patterson seems like more of that guy that's going to be or
- 15:49is it Patterson or is it Peterson, Corey Patterson, Corey
- 15:52Patterson, He he seems more of the recruiting guy that like the
- 15:56head recruiting guy at Saint Louis, like he is in their boots
- 16:00on the ground. He's going to get the talent in
- 16:02there whether no matter what position, he's just infiltrated
- 16:05Saint Louis and that is his stomping grabs that he's going
- 16:07to get as much talent out of there as he possibly can.
- 16:10So we just we haven't had a lot of those guys in on the staff.
- 16:15So I'm going to give that you know, like AB so far I'm I'm
- 16:21looking at because you just don't know what's available as
- 16:24well. So a guy like for instance,
- 16:27Schmidt at, you know, offensive line.
- 16:32How can you judge that? I mean, I there's you know,
- 16:36they've never met each other. They don't know each other until
- 16:39he got hired onto the staff. They just didn't know each
- 16:41other. He was, he was recommended by
- 16:44Connor Riley. So that's if if Connor Riley's
- 16:48giving you an endorsement, I'm going to say my guy.
- 16:53There he is. I'm going to give, I'm going to
- 16:58give him the benefit of the doubt and I'm going to say
- 16:59that's AB minus C plus because you know, the offensive line is
- 17:03one of those things for our tenure under climbing where we
- 17:09had really good offensive lines or we've had offensive lines
- 17:12that have not done so well. And I think, you know, a lot of
- 17:16that is coaching. So if Schmidt can bring that up
- 17:19to where Connor Riley had it, I mean, that's a slam dunk hire.
- 17:23But as of right now, I have to see it to believe it that he can
- 17:27do that. So I'm going to give that like
- 17:29ACI mean just overall. And then the defensive backs,
- 17:32I'll just, I'll just cut it at that because I think both, is it
- 17:36both or who is it at linebacker? Toast, Toast.
- 17:41Toast not both, not Mason both shout out to my boy Mason both
- 17:47Toast. I can't give that a passing.
- 17:50I just I don't know what what he brings to the table.
- 17:55I mean, he's had a couple guys in his, you know, coaching
- 18:01resume that have made the league, you know, Yvonne Miller
- 18:05kind of those guys. But outside of that, he's not
- 18:09really he's been an Air Force. He hasn't really moved around.
- 18:12He hasn't really upgraded his resume in a long time.
- 18:16So I'm going to, I can't I got to give that like Adi mean
- 18:19that's just super underwhelming. It is a very underwhelming hire,
- 18:24but the defensive backs as a whole, I think we've upgraded in
- 18:29terms of age, in terms of recruiting prowess and just the
- 18:34attention to detail on the the DBS from this staff, I think
- 18:40we've gone above and beyond. I'm going to give that one an A.
- 18:44I'm going to give that one an A now that might be a little out
- 18:47there, but I'm going to give that one an AI think the
- 18:49defensive backs are getting the attention that they finally
- 18:52deserve. Because our mind you, Clanderman
- 18:55was really good at coaching up safeties.
- 18:59Our DBS have been kind of asked for a little bit like, you know,
- 19:02just in terms of schematically, we, we were giving up a lot of
- 19:07big plays and a lot of that was because of the DBS and how they
- 19:12were ran. So no offense to our boy Van
- 19:16Malone. As quirky as he was, he didn't
- 19:21hit the recruiting trail as hard as, you know, most people
- 19:23thought that he was going to when he first was hired and, and
- 19:27how he progressed through climbing staff.
- 19:29But man, oh man, I think the, the, the DB room is getting the
- 19:35attention that they deserve. So I'm going to give that an A,
- 19:37I'm going to give the the staff as a whole BB.
- 19:41Minus. All right.
- 19:43Matt, can you guess what the question?
- 19:46Was what am I creating the staff hires?
- 19:49You are so holistically staff as a whole, what, what would your
- 19:53letter grade be on the staff now that it's fully assembled?
- 19:55And then any thoughts that you have on Sean Gleason, because
- 19:58we've just been, we've been riffing on this for 20 minutes
- 20:01now. You said AB minus, man, I, I
- 20:08would go a little bit higher than that.
- 20:09I would say maybe AB plus, you know, I, I think one of the key
- 20:15things for me at least right now, because obviously we can't
- 20:18see what the products going to look like on the field until
- 20:20September. But just looking at how this
- 20:26staff is, is recruiting thus far, I think that's a really key
- 20:30piece for, for why I might be a little bit higher.
- 20:33I like how active this staff is, or at least from the outside,
- 20:38like from an outsider's perspective that they look more
- 20:42active. I mean, and I, I think it's
- 20:45showing, I don't necessarily look at it as like it's because
- 20:49we have some younger staff. I mean, I do think that helps.
- 20:53I, I, I think in this kind of era where you have a little bit
- 20:59of a newness because you don't know what to expect with the
- 21:01program, but you have kind of a staff that's a little bit
- 21:04younger, maybe a little bit more of a drive to try and connect
- 21:08with some of these transfers. And, you know, I'll be very
- 21:12interested to see, I think with a whole year of high school
- 21:14recruiting, how things, things will go with that.
- 21:17But I, I'll just kind of make a couple points, you know, with,
- 21:21with maybe a couple individuals. But I think the Jordan Peterson
- 21:26hire is going to really pay some dividends very early.
- 21:30And we could be in a situation a year from now where he's, he's a
- 21:34head coach somewhere. I really believe that.
- 21:37I think he has, I like his experience that he's had thus
- 21:41far. I think he brings this like
- 21:44youthful energy to the, the, the program.
- 21:48But I, I think from a defensive perspective, you have a really
- 21:51good opportunity to, to take some of these high profile
- 21:54transfers and, and make something happen quickly.
- 21:58And so I would not be surprised. I mean, if he has a, you know,
- 22:02if we have a good season and you have a defense that is, say,
- 22:05ranked in the top 30 that he's, he's not here next year, which
- 22:10would be, you know, very kind of funny and shocking in a way.
- 22:14But specifically with Sean Gleeson, I mean, I, I think
- 22:20there may be a little bit of an underwhelmingness to this
- 22:22because of he wasn't necessarily a name that's been floated
- 22:26about. I was definitely a little bit
- 22:30more excited if we had gotten a guy from the Packers who, you
- 22:34know, just to get somebody from the NFL who's been in a kind of
- 22:39in a successful group with an offense or the Vanderbilt guy.
- 22:44But Sean Gleason does have some good experience.
- 22:47You look at at his track record, you know, the his time at
- 22:52Oklahoma State, you know, and Rutgers, I, you know, there's a
- 22:56little bit of a struggle there. But I think from a Missouri
- 22:59perspective, I think if you look at recent history, you know, as
- 23:03a quarterback coach at Missouri this year, I think he took a guy
- 23:06and Beau Parabula, who, you know, just as a a watcher of
- 23:10college football, seeing his limited time at Penn State did
- 23:14not look great. And I think he really kind of
- 23:18developed Beau Parabula to be, you know, Missouri was very good
- 23:22with him this year. And I think that's something,
- 23:25you know, very recent that you can look at as, you know,
- 23:27developing a quarterback and trying to find his strengths and
- 23:31what works with an offense and, and making that happen.
- 23:34So it's again, it's going to be also, you know, it's going to be
- 23:39hard to tell, you know, until we get to September.
- 23:41But I think the other thing with him too, is I have to bet Colin
- 23:44Klein is going to be the one that's going to be calling the
- 23:46plays and you're not going to get a lot of offensive
- 23:49coordinators that are in that role right now that want to come
- 23:55to a new first year head coach that's going to call place.
- 23:59I mean, how are you going to leave your mark?
- 24:01It's going to be a lot tougher for for a guy, you know, to do
- 24:04that. So I can understand, you know,
- 24:08potentially having a look at a kind of a quarterbacks coach or
- 24:10something like that. But I think with a guy with
- 24:12experience, being an offensive coordinator is going to be
- 24:14really helpful. So I'm going to give the staff
- 24:17overall B plus. I like, I like a good majority
- 24:21of the hires and, and I think it kind of fits what Colin Klein's
- 24:25trying to build in the program of finding guys in specific
- 24:30recruiting areas that are big into recruiting that, you know,
- 24:34have these connections that are going to really help us out in
- 24:38the high school game as well as in the transfer portal.
- 24:40So. Just a great breakdown, great
- 24:43analysis by both of you. Thank you.
- 24:45Thank you, guys. Thank you so much.
- 24:47That's great. Before we get to talking about
- 24:51some of the portal editions, there's plenty, plenty to talk
- 24:54about there. We're going to give a shout out
- 24:55to our second sponsor, Heartland Beef Connection.
- 24:59Once again, if you weren't here last week, if you weren't
- 25:01listening to those two episodes, Heartland Beef Connection is our
- 25:05new sponsor. We're thrilled that that they
- 25:08are, that we have them on board now.
- 25:10We are not talking about grocery, three store beef.
- 25:13Heartland Beef Connection connects Kansas and Midwest
- 25:16families directly with local ranchers.
- 25:19So there's no more middleman and no industrial processing, no
- 25:22mass produced beef. I mean, we've all driven past
- 25:25those, those feed yards in Goodland and Great Bend, all
- 25:30that good stuff. So it smells like money they say
- 25:33and then that's what they're in it for.
- 25:35But you know this this this non industrial processed beef.
- 25:40A lot of these ranchers are located in Kansas and of course
- 25:42plenty of them are case Staters as well.
- 25:45So they share those same values and work ethic that we know and
- 25:49love from the K State football, basketball, athletics programs
- 25:54and it matters a lot to us as well.
- 25:56Our friend Paul started Heartland Beef Connection to
- 25:59help support Midwest ranchers by matching them directly with
- 26:02families looking to buy a quarter, half or whole beef
- 26:05shares. You know where your beef comes
- 26:07from, how it was raised and who raised it.
- 26:10And here's the part the people don't expect.
- 26:13Not only does the beef taste better, it's actually cheaper
- 26:15per pound and grocery store beef when you buy it direct.
- 26:18It's better quality, more transparency, and you're not
- 26:21paying for the middleman. I go to Costco frequently, I go
- 26:25to the grocery store frequently and I don't know if you guys
- 26:27have noticed, but the cost of beef kind of crazy right now.
- 26:31So if you're looking to save a couple of bucks, I bought a
- 26:34brisket. The last time I bought a brisket
- 26:36was probably $80.00 for USDA prime brisket and those same
- 26:41briskets are going for about 150 or 160 bucks.
- 26:43It's more than doubled in about the last 8 to 9 months.
- 26:47So definitely going with a quarter beef or half beef is or
- 26:52whole beef, whichever, whichever, 1 how many miles you
- 26:55have to feed is going to be indicative of that.
- 26:56But you're going to be able to get more bang for your buck by
- 26:59doing it that way. The best part is because you are
- 27:02listening to Cocaine Willie, you can get $25 off of your
- 27:06Heartland Beef Connection match fee when you mention the podcast
- 27:09or use code CW25. That is code CW25 S Check out
- 27:17Heartland beef connection at heartlandbeef.net.
- 27:21Real beef, real ranchers, better beef for your money.
- 27:25Jeff and Matt, what is your favorite beef dish that you've
- 27:28prepared recently? I mean, it's got to be
- 27:34Stroganoff. You would stroke beef
- 27:40stroganoff. Classic wow.
- 27:43Absolute classic. I might even make it.
- 27:46What's your What's your secret? Short rib, braise, short rib in
- 27:54the short stroganoff. We don't ground beef here.
- 27:57I mean, we do ground beef here. Love heartland, love beef
- 28:01connection. You get plenty of that with your
- 28:03Heartland beef connection when you get a quarter, half or full
- 28:07cow. But I love me a short rib.
- 28:11You braise me a short rib, take that meat.
- 28:15Nice, tender, throwing in a stroganoff.
- 28:17A creamy stroganoff. Mushrooms included thyme, Basil.
- 28:21Not not basil, thyme, Rosemary. Essential herbs I just, I just
- 28:28have to point out here though, they're quarter half her whole
- 28:30beef shares, not cow because it could be a steer that you're
- 28:34getting as well. Excuse me, Excuse me a beast.
- 28:39We can't, we can't, we can't upset the people who are
- 28:41listening to this. Might have been tag majors.
- 28:45I'm talking, I'm talking out of school.
- 28:47It is a beef. It is a beef.
- 28:49It is a beef. I made a Mississippi pot roast.
- 28:53That's good. I also made a pot roast last
- 28:57week, but not a Mississippi. Is that with peppercinis?
- 29:01Yeah, and AJU and Ranch seasoning, really good with
- 29:08mashed taters or mashed cauliflower.
- 29:11I did that too because, you know, it just sits in the
- 29:15fridge. It's it's soap and it's juices.
- 29:18I was really hoping that, you know, I could get me a Heartland
- 29:22beef and, you know, I was trying.
- 29:23I only had lamb was on sale, you know, whatever.
- 29:28Yeah, I made lamb with some kidney beans and rice, jerk
- 29:32style. It was really good in the
- 29:34pressure cooker. I wish I had some beef though.
- 29:37Wish I had some beef, it would have been better.
- 29:40Yeah, I. Made the.
- 29:42I made the All American Pot Roast from the Food Lab cookbook
- 29:47written by J Kenji Lopez. Kenji Alt.
- 29:50Love, love the food Lab love the all American pot roast.
- 29:53Great recipe. If you haven't had it, try it.
- 29:57All right, portal season still in full swing.
- 30:01Portal window I believe is still open until this Friday, the
- 30:0416th, if I'm not mistaken. So still an opportunity for
- 30:08additional players to enter. We did see not a case stater,
- 30:11but one of the biggest names to enter the portal so far, Seton.
- 30:14Jordan Seton from Colorado gets in kind of last second here last
- 30:19night. But around the same time that
- 30:21Jordan Seton announced his commit or his not commitment,
- 30:25but intention to enter the portal, we received a commitment
- 30:28from Wendell Gregory, Oklahoma State edge rusher.
- 30:32When we had our our friend the CDA tour, Calvin Glenn Alexander
- 30:36from the Oklahoma State podcast on the college huddle, he was
- 30:41very excited about Wendell Gregory.
- 30:43He was very much stating, I think he said verbatim, this is
- 30:46a guy that we would be very thankful if he if he came back
- 30:49to Oklahoma State next year. Not the case.
- 30:52He's going to be a cat. He was one of the most highly
- 30:54sought after edge rushers in the portal did visits to Texas Tech
- 30:59Texas. I think Alabama was involved at
- 31:03at the very beginning when he entered the portal, you had USC,
- 31:06Miami, Texas A&M, all of these heavy hitters with a lot of cash
- 31:11real really willing to throw their weight around and their
- 31:14dollars around were were after Wendell Gregory.
- 31:17So he comes in, he raises, I think as far as portals, portal
- 31:22members in for K State is now ranked 21st overall in beyond 3
- 31:28industry rankings for portal, portal, portal in, not portal
- 31:32out. So we're not looking at the
- 31:33aggregate right now. We're looking at portal in.
- 31:37But that's because he's coming on the heels of some other
- 31:40additions that I think I want to talk about.
- 31:43Certainly a guy in Tanner Morley of Colorado State, just up the
- 31:46road for me in Fort Collins. He was a great addition.
- 31:49He's the guy that has billboards around the Fort Collins area.
- 31:53If you were aware of that, he's so he was a big NIL guy for
- 31:56Colorado State. Josh Manning is another guy
- 31:59that's committed since we last talked last week and he's a
- 32:03obviously we we know the pedigree.
- 32:05He was a four-star wide receiver out of Lee's Summit, Missouri.
- 32:09Good friends with Avery Johnson. He originally commits to
- 32:12Missouri. He's got one year of eligibility
- 32:14left and is going to be taking that show on the road to
- 32:16Manhattan for his final year. Jason Prevard, the guy that got
- 32:21the interception to seal the deal for Virginia against
- 32:23Florida State in that I was on an airplane watching that game
- 32:28and people were freaking out on the airplane watching that that
- 32:31game. He seems like a stud.
- 32:34I'm not going to go through all of these names, but those are
- 32:36some of the names I'm most excited about out of the portal
- 32:40based on some since the last time we chatted.
- 32:43We obviously talked about positions of need and where you
- 32:46would kind of stack rank, where you would prioritize certain
- 32:49guys. What are your, you know,
- 32:51reactions to the portal hall so far since we last spoke?
- 32:55So just thinking about the guys that have been added since last
- 32:58Tuesday, what, what do you think about some of these guys?
- 33:00Any diamonds in the rough? Any guys you're more excited
- 33:03about? Not as excited about?
- 33:04Just let's get into it. I think for, for me, the first
- 33:12entry that I can think of that is essential to what this staff
- 33:17needs to do. And, and I think it's the
- 33:19defensive front with that needed to be addressed.
- 33:21We, me, Matt, and you, Bob, we all, we all thought the
- 33:25defensive line needed to be touched to, to get this team
- 33:29going in the right direction. And a guy like Kamani Burns, I
- 33:35mean Ohio kid, Gahanna Lincoln, absolute stud in high school and
- 33:41he he played a a really strong pivotal role for Cincinnati in
- 33:45that back half of their season and they had a successful season
- 33:49at Cincinnati. So I think a guy like him is a
- 33:54guy that can be versatile on the defensive line, similar to what
- 33:58Sheedy did where he's a defensive end, but he's got that
- 34:01frame where he could be a pass rusher on the inside.
- 34:05So I like I like Burns a lot. Another guy that is just jumping
- 34:13off the screen for me is a Jacoby.
- 34:15Is it Oliphant? Yeah, I I love all of that.
- 34:20I mean, talk about a guy off the bus.
- 34:22You know, I'm a big aesthetic physique guy.
- 34:26There's nothing more appealing to me than a monster that used
- 34:32to play DB in high school and grows into a frame where he just
- 34:37can't keep weight off. And it's incredible weight.
- 34:40He looks like a bodybuilder. He's going to play that hybrid
- 34:44linebacker safety kind of role in a defense where he can get
- 34:50down into the box. He can even pass rush, which is
- 34:53incredible. He's humongous.
- 34:55He's awesome. First off, the bus kind of guy.
- 34:57Those are two guys that are screaming at me on defense.
- 35:00And then on offense, well, he was already committed.
- 35:04I think last time we talked, I think it was Ronnie Fields.
- 35:07But that guy, I mean, it's just it's electric.
- 35:10And and they did sign a new running back which came from
- 35:14Oregon and he played it just this past this past weekend with
- 35:19Jay Harris and that's Jay Harris.
- 35:22Jay Harris, he average, he averaged the least amount of
- 35:27yards per carry for Oregon. It wasn't great.
- 35:31He was more there like, you know, I need a yard here kind of
- 35:34guy. And he got in there very
- 35:36sparingly. They were at a stable at Oregon
- 35:40where he could not really even see the field.
- 35:42But his all American season at D2 and then what he did in the
- 35:47bowl game versus that, the, you know, the playoff game versus
- 35:51Indiana, Indiana's just they're they're out of control.
- 35:55They're so good on defense. But even as a pass catcher for a
- 35:58guy his size, I thought he was excellent.
- 36:02And I think a guy coming in to be that third running back or
- 36:06just, you know, get more carries, even though it's not
- 36:09the number one guy, I think if he could play that role, he's
- 36:13excellent. He's excellent for an for an
- 36:15offense. Well, and if he's your, if he's
- 36:19your Antonio Martin replacement, I feel like that's a clear
- 36:22upgrade because Antonio Martin, no shade to the guy.
- 36:25He didn't look like he belonged on a Division One Power 4
- 36:29football field. Don't say that to Utah, though.
- 36:33Don't say that to Utah. OK, good for that.
- 36:36He's cooking. He got.
- 36:39He he cooked Utah, kind of. He had a nice long run.
- 36:44It sounds like they got to pick them up because they're losing
- 36:46everybody to Michigan I. Thought you were saying Utah.
- 36:48Utah picked them up out of the portal.
- 36:51Yeah, that's what I thought you said.
- 36:54I'll mention just a couple other guys and but I think my overall
- 36:57theme with with this Portal class is, is potential.
- 37:02A lot of young guys, young talent.
- 37:07You have guys who are coming up from the group of five that have
- 37:12the ability to prove themselves in a power for conference.
- 37:16You have some power for guys who you know are young with just a
- 37:22lot of potential and growth into their particular positions.
- 37:28And then you have guys who are young that really like showed
- 37:31out and, and Gregory is one of those guys.
- 37:33I mean, he was a game changer and in a lot of the times he was
- 37:38out there, I think especially when you're retooling A
- 37:41defensive line, it's extremely important to get a dude, a guy
- 37:47that you can build a defensive line around.
- 37:51And admittingly, I think if you look at, you know, who K State
- 37:55kept from the 2025 team and then with some of these guys that
- 37:59they brought in from, as you said, Cincinnati and Coastal
- 38:02Carolina, these have the potential to be good players.
- 38:06But you need somebody who's going to be really kind of the
- 38:09king on that line. And to pick him up from Oklahoma
- 38:13State is is absolutely huge because it does give you maybe
- 38:18even a little bit more flexibility in how you navigate
- 38:22maybe the rest of the portal and also how you're projecting this
- 38:25defensive line to look for next year.
- 38:28I'll also just mention, I think I talked about him last week,
- 38:30but I love the pickup of Makai Mason, Louisiana Tech
- 38:34linebacker. He was all Conference USA second
- 38:40team or even maybe first team this past year.
- 38:44I think he's a really good player.
- 38:45You look at some of his film and he's going to get probably in
- 38:50the weight room a little bit more, but he's a guy that I
- 38:53think is going to be kind of an instant replacement at the
- 38:57linebacker position. And depending on how this
- 39:00defense is run, you know, we don't know necessarily how many
- 39:03linebackers they're going to put out there at a time.
- 39:06You know, we don't know much necessarily about how the
- 39:08defense alignment's going to look.
- 39:09But I've been really impressed with specifically his film.
- 39:12I think he's going to be a really good player for us,
- 39:14especially as this defense kind of develops in the spring into
- 39:17the fall. I've I've wanted you know, I
- 39:22don't want us to go harbor on it too long, but you know, how many
- 39:27starters did we acquire in the portal?
- 39:32I mean, you've got to think that we're replacing three offensive
- 39:36lineman at that graduated or you know, whatever or left the
- 39:42program. We're losing running backs.
- 39:46Well, one running back, wide receivers were losing 1 tight
- 39:51ends. We didn't lose too much, not we
- 39:53left some depth piece, but starters they're intact.
- 39:57Defensively, the whole D lines gone.
- 40:00So we did, we replace all the starters there.
- 40:03I would hope we did. I mean, I don't know what we're
- 40:05bringing up from the the depths. Jordan Allen, maybe somebody
- 40:08that can step in and become a starter.
- 40:11Linebackers all gone, right, as far as I know.
- 40:17And then defensively, we lost everybody except for the 2
- 40:22starting corners that might potentially be the starters.
- 40:25So how many of these guys are starters?
- 40:29Well, you, I mean, we have a couple linebackers that are
- 40:32still with us. Rex Fan.
- 40:35Why? I would not, but I wouldn't
- 40:36consider him starter level. I still think from what we saw
- 40:42last year, unless there's an immediate jump or serious
- 40:46development that you know, just comes out of nowhere, I don't
- 40:50think he is a power for starting linebacker.
- 40:53No offense to him. I think he is an incredible
- 40:55depth piece, somebody that can come in and give you 20, 20
- 40:58snaps a game and an excellent special team, excellent special
- 41:02team. Or you got to have guys like
- 41:03that, that is excellent on special teams.
- 41:05But I think for me, I don't think if you're not for from the
- 41:11portal for this defense, if we're not replacing 7 starters
- 41:18from the portal, I think we've failed.
- 41:22I think we have to find no just on on defense.
- 41:25I think on defense we have to find seven.
- 41:28I think offensive line wise now offensive line is a little
- 41:31different because you you kind of build those guys up through
- 41:34the system and whatever. And there might be some guys
- 41:37that are hidden down in there that that can get it, get it and
- 41:40go. But I think Bob's boy, I don't
- 41:44he's coming off an injury. So maybe he he got earned, he
- 41:48got injured earlier in the season.
- 41:51So maybe he'll be a full go kind of guy that can plug and play.
- 41:55He's a monster of a human. What is what was his name?
- 41:59Yeah, yeah, he's a he was a monster at Colorado State, but
- 42:04he's coming off an injury. You know, that that can be
- 42:09questionable. We saw that with Gunner
- 42:11Maldonado, who we knew had all the town in the world.
- 42:14But it just takes time. And then you bring George
- 42:17Fitzpatrick back. So the offensive line I think is
- 42:20kind of taken care of. But I think defensively really
- 42:23is where we have to hit on all a lot of these guys.
- 42:26I think we have to find 7 starters on that out of this
- 42:29portal class. We have to have seven of them
- 42:31because defensive line Wendell Gregory obviously is going to be
- 42:35a starter. We know he's got the talent.
- 42:38We he's going to be doing his thing, but Jordan Allen is
- 42:41really the only defensive line guy that we're bringing back.
- 42:45So three of them or two of them or however we're doing the
- 42:49rotation have to come from this portal class.
- 42:52But Mason is kind of come in and replace Romaine.
- 42:56I think Oliphant will come in and replace what's his name
- 43:02that's meant Pernell. I mean it.
- 43:04And then it's just the safety room.
- 43:06Who do you trust Wesley Fair to be a starter?
- 43:08Do you trust Logan Bartley to be a starter?
- 43:13I don't know if these guys are ready.
- 43:15That's why you got to hit on these guys in the portal, and I
- 43:17think you have to have seven. And then offensively, you got to
- 43:20have probably two or three, 3 or 4, two or three, 3 or 4
- 43:24somewhere around. 77's a lot, 7's a lot, I mean.
- 43:29Look at what we're, look at what we're losing and what we brought
- 43:33back. I don't know if we have starter
- 43:36level returning. I think Jordan Allen will be a
- 43:40starter. I think your cornerbacks are
- 43:46good. I think Logan Bartley will be a
- 43:49starter. Really, I think he'll, I and I,
- 43:53I primarily look at it from a, a recent historical K State
- 44:00perspective. When you play guys as a true
- 44:02freshman, they always fail. And that's not that they fail,
- 44:07but in a more impressive way that a true freshman was out
- 44:10there just making dumb mistakes. And you see, like you, you see
- 44:16it from Jacob Parrish. I mean, you saw like we've had
- 44:21this Austin Romain even as a true freshman, like he got shit
- 44:27on, but as a sophomore I thought he was very good.
- 44:33And I see that kind of step up for Logan Bartley as a sophomore
- 44:37to be starting. So I the, the tough part where
- 44:42you say like 7 people, I don't know if there's seven quality
- 44:48defensive starters in this portal class yet.
- 44:53And, and that's why I more trend towards, OK, who are the guys
- 44:58that, you know, we do have here on the defense that we've been
- 45:02in the program that have shown some life, like have shown the
- 45:08potential for development. And so I would, I would say kind
- 45:11of those two, but I mean, in, in general, like it's this is how
- 45:16the portal was going to be this year for us.
- 45:18When you go through a coaching change and I think people, you
- 45:24know, as you saw these big names coming through, people were
- 45:27disappointed. But I at the end of the day,
- 45:30like I was not surprised when you see these big names, you
- 45:33have schools that feel like they're seeing blood in the
- 45:37water, right? They are seeing a big overhaul
- 45:40at K State. This is our opportunity to kind
- 45:43of knock them down. Let's get their talent into our
- 45:47program etcetera. But the nice part I feel like is
- 45:51we're seeing a really good rebound from that.
- 45:54And you know, it's not necessarily the quantity like we
- 45:59we saw a quantity of guys, seven guys in one day, etcetera.
- 46:03That's not necessarily going to be the case anymore.
- 46:06Now you're going to see OK, 1-2, you know, maybe at the most that
- 46:11are going to sign a day. And at this point, it should be
- 46:14an expectation of what kind of quality guys are potentially
- 46:18going to be entering the portal that we we need to be keeping an
- 46:20eye on. And what kind of guys that we've
- 46:22been on for the past eight days, nine however long the portal has
- 46:26been open that we can do one last hard sell and get get some
- 46:30quality guys here that could start.
- 46:32And the reason why I said that, and it's not like not to poo poo
- 46:36on the guys that are on the roster that they can't make, you
- 46:40know, jumps because, you know, you got ace Newsome, you got
- 46:43guys like that that can, you know, with a healthy season that
- 46:46he didn't finally have a a season ending loss where he's
- 46:50not in the training room and he actually gets a spring and a
- 46:53summer to actually grow as a linebacker.
- 46:56But it's more they didn't crack it last year.
- 47:00OK, that's fine. And the numbers because we have
- 47:04to keep it at one O 5. I only see us adding maybe like
- 47:086 or 7 more guys like we have to hit on if if that's if your
- 47:14logic and what you're saying is true.
- 47:17The guys that we're bringing in these next few transfer portal
- 47:20guys, they have to be absolute killers.
- 47:23They have to because like you said, if those guys that are on
- 47:26this list already aren't starters, they're they're going
- 47:29to have to be if they don't hit the next few guys.
- 47:31So I, I think it's interesting, I think this class is
- 47:36underrated. I think it's very underrated.
- 47:39I think there's some guys that fit molds that are really big,
- 47:42really strong and you know, it just takes development.
- 47:46So it'll be interesting to see. But I, I think if, if what
- 47:49you're saying is true, we have to hit on these next few guys.
- 47:55What do you think the likelihood is that any of the guys that
- 47:57have entered return come back to K state because they didn't find
- 48:02suitors elsewhere or whatever? If they haven't found suitors
- 48:06yet, then they weren't any good. I agree, I'm just I'm just
- 48:10asking what do you think that could be 0?
- 48:15Yeah, it's there. I don't know.
- 48:16I just, yeah, at this point I think it's definitely 0.
- 48:19And I mean. I don't even know who he wants
- 48:23back out of like, you know, the guys that have already signed,
- 48:27like I would love Clay Moss to come back.
- 48:29I would love for Chidi to come back.
- 48:31I'd love Toby to come back. But they those guys are already
- 48:34signed, I think. They they are it's, it's more
- 48:38like the names like a JB Price hasn't been found.
- 48:42He he hasn't, he hasn't landed anywhere.
- 48:44So Braden Lofton has entered, but he hasn't.
- 48:47Has he committed to UCLA? So he visited UCLAI, saw he.
- 48:51I saw he committed. I thought he's.
- 48:53I thought I saw he. Committed, I mean, I think I
- 48:55think a good majority of the guys that have put their name in
- 48:58the portal have found suitors. And I think as, as Chef said,
- 49:02like, like it's if if you're in a situation where you entered
- 49:10the portal and you aren't getting suitors, then I think if
- 49:16you're trying to rebuild this program that shows you a little
- 49:20bit of something like it just shows you that.
- 49:23And but and unfortunately, I mean, if you think of how K
- 49:27State's historical successes come, it comes from guys who
- 49:30probably are in a situation where they don't have a lot of
- 49:34offers, they don't have a lot of suitors and they come and build
- 49:37themselves for four years and get to a point where they're
- 49:40starting as a senior and making big plays and doing this and
- 49:42that. That's just not how it is
- 49:44anymore. Like the development aspect of
- 49:47being a college football player just doesn't seem like it's it's
- 49:51at that point anymore where you can really take risks on on walk
- 49:57ONS or not even walk ONS. But you know, guys from 8A or
- 50:01you know, eight man football in Kansas that it it just doesn't
- 50:04seem like there are as many of those opportunities, which is
- 50:07very sad. But that's to be competitive in
- 50:092026. Like that's how it's got to be.
- 50:13And the, and the thing about it is it's, it goes both ways.
- 50:16If if you know the players want to play, it's a highly
- 50:21competitive market with it's over saturated with players.
- 50:25So I mean technically K state could throw anybody they want a
- 50:30bone that has zero offers that has gotten no interest and they
- 50:33can bring them in if they wanted to.
- 50:35But here's the thing, there's there was like 3000 players that
- 50:42entered the portal, like 1100 of them have signed.
- 50:46That's not good. I mean, there's there's players
- 50:49just disappearing off the map that are going to be, you know,
- 50:52pushing carts at Walmart. If it's the problem is it's both
- 50:56ways. The coaches push players out
- 50:58because they want better players and they need competitive depth
- 51:03throughout their roster because of the one O 5 rule and players
- 51:09with agents with all this stuff with representative that people
- 51:11talk and say, hey, you could do better.
- 51:13You could actually be playing and that's not the case.
- 51:16You need your brother. I'm talking to the recruit
- 51:19that's thinking that they can enter the portal and that is
- 51:21going to get playing time. I take my gum out.
- 51:25You need three years to grow up, brother.
- 51:28You need it. You need three years in the
- 51:30weight room. You're not ready.
- 51:32And it and that's that's a that's a guy that has never
- 51:35played collegiate football. I know this.
- 51:38I was never ready. When you're not ready yet, when
- 51:41as soon as you're ready, your time will come.
- 51:43Look at what Indiana's doing. These are guys that were not the
- 51:47highly touted guys out of high school.
- 51:50They weren't the highly touted guys out of the transfer portal
- 51:53either, But they're old guys. They're guys that have, you
- 51:57know, built their bodies up. They're 24 year old, 23 year old
- 52:00guys. They're men.
- 52:02But if you're a 19 year old JB Price, yeah, you're not getting
- 52:08the reps and he might have been pushed out.
- 52:09We we don't know. But if if for instance, that he
- 52:12was voluntarily left K State's program, you're not ready,
- 52:17brother. You're you're ready to run be
- 52:21running back at Elon. You're not ready at P4 level and
- 52:25so if he would stick around at the program and, you know, lift
- 52:29weights and learn from other guys, maybe his time would come.
- 52:33But kids don't want to do that these days.
- 52:35Or coaches are not giving them the opportunity either, which is
- 52:39also really gross and kind of sucks, but that's the nature of
- 52:43it. When you go to the one O 5,
- 52:45these coaches ain't got time to be spending the guy for the 5th
- 52:49running back on the depth chart. They got to get somebody that
- 52:52can tote the rock when the time comes, so it sucks all the way
- 52:57around. That development is gone.
- 52:59But man, the transfer portal is fun.
- 53:05It's fun, but it's also anxiety inducing all at the same time.
- 53:09So quick shout out to to on three KSO, the guys over there.
- 53:13This is not behind a pay wall, but I'm going to plug their
- 53:16transfer tracker that they have just to show kind of a plus
- 53:19minus that Mason both put together of which positions
- 53:23we've gained or lost guys and we're still down one at QB,
- 53:28running back, linebacker and safety.
- 53:31We are in the positive on kicker and punter, long snapper,
- 53:37corner, defensive tackle and we are even on offensive line and
- 53:42wide receiver. I mean off.
- 53:49We can. We can feel the team.
- 53:51Let's do. It we could feel the team, I, I
- 53:53would feel I, I would feel more positive if we hit on one more
- 54:00offensive line or the offensive lineman that definitely is
- 54:04starter level, which is going to be hard to find in the portal
- 54:09because they they go quick and then one more defensive end
- 54:14because I think we could do have a lot of depth pieces on there.
- 54:17I think Gregory is a difference maker.
- 54:20I think Burns is a difference maker.
- 54:22Maybe Hicks. He's an older guy, right?
- 54:25Or did he only do one year at Gardner Webb?
- 54:27Not entirely sure. Maybe he's not an older guy.
- 54:29Maybe he's not ready. Mason impact guy.
- 54:34Who? How do you pronounce his name?
- 54:36It's Jason, the guy from Jason Prevard.
- 54:40I'm going to. Learn Jason Prevard.
- 54:43Prevard, Prevard. He is Jason Prevard.
- 54:46No, he will be our best. He will be he will be the best
- 54:49defensive player we have and that is a he is a he is he is a
- 54:55clone of Julius Brent's frame. I feel like maybe he's a inch,
- 55:00inch shorter, but he plays safety like it.
- 55:04It is going to be fun to watch him just like roam the field and
- 55:09to make plays. It's going to be interesting.
- 55:11He locks down and man he is fun on that deep, that deep back
- 55:15half or the deep 3rd to make plays because I feel like that's
- 55:19where he got all his interceptions except for the one
- 55:21where he swatted it out of Florida State dudes hand, which
- 55:25was insane play as well. So it's going to be it's going
- 55:28to be fun to have him. There's some difference makers
- 55:30on this team, but we do need to hit some more.
- 55:35What do you think of the Georgia edition, the Adrian Maddox kid
- 55:38that I think it was a South Alabama prior to that or Alabama
- 55:41State. Alabama State I think is what it
- 55:43was. Well, it was Alabama State, then
- 55:45UAD. Then Georgia.
- 55:47Yeah, OK, OK, OK. Yeah, depth.
- 55:50I think that's a depth guy. I think he'll he'll play more.
- 55:54I think from what you know, the stories gathered up, he did.
- 55:59He was one of those guys that got, you know, kind of
- 56:02bamboozled by the two portal windows where you come in early
- 56:06and then they bring somebody in the second window and you're
- 56:09like, but I was here, I thought I was getting the spot.
- 56:12So he probably wasn't good enough to play at Georgia, but
- 56:16you know, maybe he's good enough to crack the 2 deep at K State.
- 56:21I like that. I think he I think he's fun.
- 56:23He's a fun interview too. So maybe get him on the way.
- 56:27I mean, I think he's a good, I think there's a good risk reward
- 56:31on that one potentially. I mean, you know, at the end of
- 56:34the day, Georgia saw something in this this guy and he didn't
- 56:40get a lot of playing time there. But I think some of that
- 56:43evaluation is really good, you know, to kind of gauge, you
- 56:47know, who they believe has talent to play for them.
- 56:51He had some good numbers at Alabama State and at UAB.
- 56:55So I think he's he's a guy that you potentially cash in a
- 57:01lottery ticket on. If you can get some significant
- 57:04play from him, then hey, your evaluation was really good of
- 57:09this kid. I hate saying kid of this guy,
- 57:15but I, I, I mean, I, I don't know, I look at, I look at, you
- 57:19know, for schools that are looking at some of these
- 57:21transfers who have had, you know, these guys that have
- 57:23transferred. Like, I have to trust a little
- 57:26bit of the town evaluation there too.
- 57:28So it'll be interesting to see how much time he gets.
- 57:32Yeah, I, I equate it similar to like a Jay Sean Ross or Jaden
- 57:36Rowe pick up last, last portal cycle of it's a guy you're
- 57:38taking a flyer on. He was evaluated well by high
- 57:42caliber programs. You just kind of have to hope
- 57:44that that what they saw in him can come to fruition and that he
- 57:47doesn't get caught for trafficking marijuana in
- 57:50southeast Kansas. Somewhere so that's.
- 57:52Yeah, he's a, he's a bit older. Maybe he's got his head on his
- 57:55shoulders a little bit more than you know.
- 57:57Shout out to our our boy Jay Sean pushing that weight.
- 58:01Can't believe it's not legal. Is weed not legal in Kansas?
- 58:05No, no it's not. No shit sports.
- 58:09Betting. Sports betting is legal in
- 58:11Kansas, Illegal in Missouri. Well, I guess it's legal now as
- 58:14of December 1st or something. But marijuana legal, Legal in
- 58:18Missouri, Illegal in Kansas. What an idiot.
- 58:22Also, chef, you make you make the the reference of, yeah, if
- 58:25you can't make the 105, you're going to be pushing, pushing
- 58:27carts at Walmart. Well, hopefully a guy like
- 58:30Wendell Gregory when he's pushing carts at Walmart will
- 58:32actually pay for pay for his goods instead of getting caught
- 58:35for for robbery of $200 worth of merchandise from Walmart.
- 58:40Is that what happened last year? Wendell.
- 58:42Gregory in August, that did happen in August in Stillwater.
- 58:46So hey, Wendell, if you're listening to this, don't you
- 58:51don't need to steal. You don't need to steal stuff
- 58:53from Walmart, man. You got, you got, you got paid.
- 58:58That's not great. I I would have hoped that he got
- 59:01paid at Oklahoma State, but it's just kids.
- 59:05He's dumb. I don't know.
- 59:07Sometimes it's just fun to steal though.
- 59:10It is funny because you've got I've got tech guys and Oklahoma
- 59:13State guys in my mentions talking about, oh, good luck,
- 59:16have fun with this guy. He's his agent of Prima Donna
- 59:18and he got caught for robbery. And I'm like, dude, he stole
- 59:21$200 worth of who knows what from Walmart.
- 59:24Come on. Like, we can give it a pass.
- 59:26It's not that it was out here. Hopefully it won't stealing
- 59:29credit. Cards.
- 59:30Hopefully it wasn't beef because he could just go to Heartland
- 59:33Beef connection, get hooked up, get you 1/2 of beef and you will
- 59:37never have to steal from Walmart and their unquality beef again.
- 59:44I can't. I can't think of a better way to
- 59:46end the pod. I mean, there's nothing to talk
- 59:48about with basketball. They still suck.
- 59:50We could just rehash the same shit we've talked about for the
- 59:54last five weeks now at this point.
- 59:57So yeah, we're we're not going to talk about hoops.
- 59:58There's nothing positive to talk about there.
- 1:00:00They're still terrible. But with that, I think that's
- 1:00:03that's going to do it for our episode today.
- 1:00:08I just wanted to quickly point out the bowl season standings.
- 1:00:13Do you want to update that real quick?
- 1:00:15Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. So I am 6253 and 1.
- 1:00:23You are 60, 3:52 and 1:00. OK, Yeah, I just wanted.
- 1:00:29To just point that out. Who?
- 1:00:32Who were you taking on Monday? What's the line?
- 1:00:36What's the spread? What we got?
- 1:00:37Let's see here. Let's see.
- 1:00:40I believe the line is. I mean, I'm.
- 1:00:45Going to go with Indiana. Indiana 8 1/2.
- 1:00:51Indiana 8 1/2 So you're taking Indiana 8?
- 1:00:54And 1/2. OK, I'm also, I'm also taking
- 1:00:57Indiana 8 1/2 to preserve my victory, so I just wanted for
- 1:01:00everybody to make sure I was coaxing Bob into picking first
- 1:01:04so I could also pick the same thing and.
- 1:01:06OK, well, I'm, I'm going to take no, no Miami then.
- 1:01:09What a lowlife, what a lowlife, what a lowlife.
- 1:01:12You know what I think I'm going to now.
- 1:01:14I was just thinking about it for a second.
- 1:01:15I think I'm going to take Miami. Darn.
- 1:01:20It's funny because Bob never typed it in and you literally.
- 1:01:26Just typed it in by the way. Matt, you're.
- 1:01:29On the record as saying in -8 1/2, let's have some fun with
- 1:01:35it. Let's have some fun with it.
- 1:01:37No, I, I'd. Rather win.
- 1:01:41Yeah, I'd rather actually so. You're taking Miami.
- 1:01:49Well, I'm going to type it in myself on Monday afternoon,
- 1:01:53actually Monday right before kick, I'm going to type it in
- 1:01:56myself, so. I don't trust you.
- 1:01:59OK, OK, I will. I'll see you there.
- 1:02:03You guys are sick. You guys are sick.
- 1:02:05Oh. My God.
- 1:02:08I mean as as the loser over there.
- 1:02:13You see? Are you talking to me?
- 1:02:18Is the loser. I would I would have sweat bowl
- 1:02:21season if I actually had time 2. Steph is the.
- 1:02:28Losers over there. Here's an L4.
