Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle talk. Today we are in Psalm 116, Psalm
- 0:19116, and I love this Psalm. I preached a message on this.
- 0:25It was actually the, I want to say the second to the last
- 0:29sermon that I preached at my church in Washington.
- 0:34And so I linked that in the show notes and I was really
- 0:37encouraged just through listening to that message.
- 0:41Again, such a rich portion of Scripture.
- 0:45And so I hope that it's an encouragement to you even as we
- 0:48walk through it today. So this is one of the halal
- 0:53Psalms. This is one of the psalms that
- 0:55would be sung during the Passover season.
- 0:58So many people would sing them as they were on their way to
- 1:01Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. You would also have this as the
- 1:07time and the psalms that were sung during Jesus's last week
- 1:12here on earth before his crucifixion.
- 1:15And so it bears some special importance to us even as
- 1:20Christians. And so we can remember both
- 1:22Exodus, we can remember times of worship, regular worship for the
- 1:27children of Israel and Jesus's habits and what he did and what
- 1:32he was thinking about and even singing during his last week
- 1:37before his crucifixion. So let's read through Psalm 116.
- 1:41I'm going to read all the way through it.
- 1:43I'm going to highlight a couple of things and then I'll actually
- 1:45encourage you to go listen to that sermon.
- 1:49I've linked it in the show notes and I believe it'll be an
- 1:52encouragement to you and hopefully and kind of that
- 1:54sermon format, if you're like, man, I just really want some
- 1:58more of this song. You can find it there, but let's
- 2:00read through together. I love Yahweh because He has
- 2:05heard my appeal for mercy because He's turned His ear to
- 2:08me. I'll call out to Him as long as
- 2:11I live. The ropes of death were wrapped
- 2:14around me and the torments of the grave overcame me.
- 2:17I encountered trouble and sorrow.
- 2:19Then I called on the name of Yahweh.
- 2:22Yahweh save me. Yahweh is gracious and
- 2:26righteous. Our God is compassionate.
- 2:30Yahweh guards the inexperienced. I was hopeless and He saved me.
- 2:36Return to your rest my soul, for Yahweh has been good to you, for
- 2:40you. Yahweh rescued me from death, my
- 2:43eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.
- 2:46I will walk before Yahweh in the land of the living.
- 2:49I believed even when I said I am severely oppressed.
- 2:53In my alarm I said everyone is a liar.
- 2:57How can I repay Yahweh for all the good He has done for me?
- 3:02I will take the cup of salvation and call on the name of Yahweh.
- 3:06I will fulfill my vows to Yahweh in the presence of all His
- 3:10people. The death of His faithful ones
- 3:13is valuable in Yahweh's sight. Yahweh, I am indeed your
- 3:18servant. I am your servant, the son of
- 3:21Your female Servant. You have loosened my bonds.
- 3:24I will offer you a Thanksgiving sacrifice and call on the name
- 3:28of Yahweh. I will fulfill my vows to Yahweh
- 3:31in the presence of all His people in the courts of Yahweh's
- 3:35house within you, Jerusalem. Hallelujah.
- 3:40I love, love, love, love this portion of scripture.
- 3:44I'm going to walk through and and note a couple of things I
- 3:47was also reading through today. Charles Spurgeon was a pastor in
- 3:52London at the Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle in the, like,
- 3:58late 1800s. And he wrote, he wrote a lot of
- 4:02things. He has been nicknamed the Prince
- 4:05of Preachers, but one of his writings was called The Treasury
- 4:09of David. And so there were a couple of
- 4:10quotes even as I was reading through his book on Psalms 111
- 4:16through 119 that I'll highlight for us today.
- 4:20And then I encourage you to listen to the sermon as well if
- 4:23you have some extra time this morning.
- 4:25So verses one and two, it starts off with the declaration of love
- 4:30for God. And all of God's people should
- 4:32say that they love the Lord. But let's not just say that we
- 4:37love him, though certainly let's start there.
- 4:39At the very least, let's tell other people that we love our
- 4:42God, that we love Jesus, and then let us have that love
- 4:47motivate us into action towards both God and others.
- 4:52That we would treat others the way that God would have us to.
- 4:55That we would be those images of God that we would show everyone
- 5:00around us what God is like through how we live our lives.
- 5:04So he says, I love Yahweh because he has heard my appeal
- 5:08from mercy. Right here at the very
- 5:10beginning, it starts off saying God is merciful to us.
- 5:15I'm glad that God doesn't give us all of the punishment that we
- 5:19deserve and instead He has poured out all of the
- 5:22condemnation that we've justly earned.
- 5:25He poured it out. He poured it all out on Christ
- 5:29on the cross. And when we call on Him for
- 5:32mercy, He will answer every time.
- 5:34There's never a person that will ask for forgiveness from the
- 5:37Lord that He will not freely grant it forever.
- 5:41What a truth verse #2 Because he has turned his ear to me, I will
- 5:45call out to him as long as I live.
- 5:48He says because God listened when I prayed to him, when I
- 5:51asked for mercy, when I asked for help, because he's heard me,
- 5:55I'm going to keep on calling out to Him as long as I live.
- 6:00Here's one of the quotes from Spurgeon.
- 6:03He says we would not think a beggar who informed us that
- 6:07because we'd granted his request, he would never stop
- 6:10begging from us. And yet doubtless it is
- 6:13acceptable to God that his petitioners should form the
- 6:18resolution to continue in prayer.
- 6:20This shows the greatness of his goodness and the abundance of
- 6:24his patients there. We wouldn't find it endearing if
- 6:28we, you know, gave some money or we gave some food to a person
- 6:33experiencing homelessness. And so then they told us, oh,
- 6:36man, I'm going to keep begging from you for all the rest of my
- 6:39life. We'd go, well, no, I, I don't
- 6:42want you to do that. But that is what God invites us
- 6:45to. He loves it and he loves it
- 6:47because he can answer us. He can answer our requests over
- 6:51and over and over again. And when we ask for mercy, it
- 6:55thrills the heart of God to exercise His goodness and His
- 6:59grace and His forgiveness towards us.
- 7:02And so we can. We should never feel as though,
- 7:05well, I've come to God one too many times asking for
- 7:07forgiveness. No, my friend, come back to the
- 7:10Well of Mercy over and over again and find that it will
- 7:15never run dry. Verse #3 As this person is
- 7:20recounting how God heard him, he he talks about the trouble that
- 7:24he was in. He says the ropes of death were
- 7:26wrapped around me and the torments of the grave overcame
- 7:30me. Many translations here will have
- 7:32the torments of Sheol. That's the Hebrew word for the
- 7:37grave. Sometimes it's translated in
- 7:40older translations like the King James as Hell.
- 7:44I believe it's the new living translation translates it as the
- 7:49grave, which is kind of more all-encompassing.
- 7:51That's OK. If you believe in God and yet
- 7:55you die, you're you're still going to the grave, but you're
- 7:59not necessarily going to the place of eternal separation from
- 8:03God, which we would know of as hell or the lake of fire.
- 8:07And so I appreciate that the new living translation there
- 8:11translates it as grave. If you're here with me reading
- 8:16from the Christian Standard Bible, it says she'll.
- 8:19But I'll often just instead of transliterating it from Hebrew
- 8:24into English and just saying, OK, well, I'm not going to
- 8:27translate it. I'm just going to transliterate
- 8:28it. I much prefer let's just put in
- 8:31a translation and grave works very well.
- 8:34So here, this person, they're about to die.
- 8:37If this is David that's writing this, this is something that he
- 8:40would go through over and over and over again in his life.
- 8:43Whether it was the Philistines attacking him, whether it was
- 8:46Saul trying to get him, whether it was some other group, You
- 8:50know, even at times in his life, other Israelites, his son
- 8:55Absalom, There are so many times when it looked like the grave
- 8:59was going to take David. And it says he encountered
- 9:02trouble and sorrow, but he called on the name of Yahweh.
- 9:05Yahweh, save me. And in our moments of trouble, I
- 9:08think right now I've got friends that are fighting cancer even at
- 9:13this moment. I have friends that have fought
- 9:15cancer in the past. And God has seen fit to at this
- 9:20particular time, say no. I'm going to have you here for a
- 9:23little bit longer. And I'm thankful that even
- 9:25though the grave is not ultimate, that if God doesn't
- 9:31save me from dying, God is still good and I have all of eternity
- 9:38that I will spend with my God. And so the grave isn't even
- 9:42something that's necessarily the most important thing, but we can
- 9:46ask for God to save us from the grave.
- 9:48And he has done that. I know my friends Roger and
- 9:50Kathy often listen to the podcast and Rogers told me
- 9:53stories about how he almost got hit by, I can't remember right
- 9:58now if it was a bus or a truck, but he was about to get hit and
- 10:02the Lord saved him from physical death in that moment.
- 10:06And he had called to God like God save me and the Lord was
- 10:11right there for him. And I think that's so true very
- 10:15often in our physical lives. But man, this is even more true
- 10:19when we look at our spiritual lives that Satan and hell and
- 10:24sin and the grave they were dragging us down and we were on
- 10:28our way to hell. But for every person that is
- 10:31called on the name of the Lord to save them.
- 10:34He has been good and faithful to save them.
- 10:37I I love the words of Jesus. I, I mention them often here and
- 10:40I'm not going to apologize for that.
- 10:42From John 6 says everyone that the Father has given to me will
- 10:46come to me and those that come to me I will.
- 10:49And no wise cast out. When you come to Jesus, when you
- 10:53call on him, you can know emphatically that he will
- 10:57forgive you and save you. Verse #5 through verse #11 then
- 11:03there's this response of God, because you saved me, here's
- 11:07going to be what I say about you and here's what I'm going to
- 11:10recognize about the world around me says Yahweh, You are gracious
- 11:15and righteous here. This graciousness, I'm looking
- 11:20up the words here. This is to be merciful.
- 11:22It's, it's the kind, it's to be kind.
- 11:24It is someone who is compassionate.
- 11:28It's goodwill resulting in a beneficial act.
- 11:32And so here God, he is happy to do good to you, but he's not
- 11:37just gracious, he's also righteous.
- 11:39He's just, He does what is right by even by us, by his creation,
- 11:46He does what is right. And there are many times in our
- 11:49life now where we will not see that fully.
- 11:52When we get to heaven, we will see that in its complete
- 11:56fulfilled nature, we'll see God. Oh, I thought you weren't being
- 12:00fair when you did this, but you were actually protecting me from
- 12:04this taking place. God, I didn't realize in that
- 12:08moment, yeah, I had been walking away from you.
- 12:10I'd had this thing or this person or this situation or this
- 12:14job as an idol in my life that I was worshipping more than you.
- 12:18And so God, you taking that away out of my life, you were
- 12:23actually good and righteous and just in what you did there.
- 12:27He says also our God is compassionate.
- 12:30That is, he actually cares about you.
- 12:32And I think of Jesus when he looked out on the crowds, those
- 12:37people that were flocking to him, and he realized that they
- 12:42were like sheep that did not have a shepherd.
- 12:44And it says he looked out with compassion on them.
- 12:47And I'm thankful that we have a God like that.
- 12:50He genuinely cares about you. And then the response from his
- 12:55people should be that we are compassionate as well, that we
- 12:58never look at anyone and we go, Oh well, you just deserve
- 13:01whatever you got in life. And if you're going through hard
- 13:04times, well, stinks to be you. No, May we have the compassion
- 13:08and the mercy and the grace that our Heavenly Father has modeled
- 13:13for US. Verse number six.
- 13:14He always guards the inexperienced.
- 13:16I was helpless and He saved me. That God will help you even if
- 13:20you don't know what you should be doing.
- 13:22He is constantly there for you. Then the psalmist reflects
- 13:27inward. He says return your rest of my
- 13:29soul, for Yahweh has been good to you.
- 13:33The constant call of our heart ought to be God.
- 13:36Would you help me return to rest to Sabbath within my soul?
- 13:41I'm pretty sure that's Oh no. Oh, it's Manoa.
- 13:44It's the word resting place. Manoah is in the book of Judges.
- 13:49If I remember correctly, that's Samson's dad's name.
- 13:53It's a resting place. It's a place of safety.
- 13:56I apologize. I'm pulling this up even as I'm
- 13:59going through. It's where one can rest and
- 14:01recuperate from activity with the focus on the rest itself.
- 14:06It's home. It's an abode as a place where
- 14:09one lives and where one finds rest.
- 14:12It's a place where you see you cease movement.
- 14:15You're in a stationary state as a figurative extension of being
- 14:18in a place as your home, he says.
- 14:21You can set up a safe place at home.
- 14:25The opposite of this would be, especially during this time
- 14:28period, you'd have nomads and they would be those that would
- 14:31pick up camp and they'd go from place to place to place.
- 14:34And you would do that based on if there was grass available for
- 14:37your flocks to eat, different things like that.
- 14:40But here what the psalmist is saying is you can have a safe,
- 14:45settled place where you have everything you need in your God.
- 14:50He says for you, Yahweh rescued me from death, my eyes from
- 14:53tears and my feet from stumbling.
- 14:56That is, he experienced salvation from death.
- 14:58He experienced joy that his eyes stopped their crying and his
- 15:03feet didn't stumble, that he was walking in a right way.
- 15:06That is salvation. Joy and holiness were given to
- 15:09the psalmist here and here, Spurgeon writes, Salvation, joy
- 15:13and holiness must go together and they are all provided for us
- 15:17in the covenant of grace. Death is vanquished, tears are
- 15:21dried and fears are banished when the Lord is near.
- 15:25And I love that quote there says I'll walk before Yahweh in the
- 15:28land of the living. I believed even when I said I'm
- 15:31severely oppressed in my alarm I said everyone is a liar.
- 15:37Here though we we recognize no person tells the truth 100% of
- 15:43the time. And so in that instance, the
- 15:45psalmist here is right, everyone is a liar.
- 15:48Hear what he was saying was I can't trust any person.
- 15:51Everyone is suspect under my estimation.
- 15:56And here's Spurgeon writes, Under great affliction, our
- 15:58temptation will be to form hasty judgments of our fellow humans.
- 16:03And knowing this to be the case, we are carefully to watch our
- 16:06spirit and to keep the door of our lips.
- 16:09That is, we will tend to be distrusting and unkind with our
- 16:15words towards other people when we're going through great
- 16:18hardship here. That's what the psalmist says
- 16:20that he was doing. He says, in my alarm, I said
- 16:22this. This was not something that he's
- 16:25saying. You guys should think about
- 16:27other people in this way and reconciliation with God.
- 16:31The rescue of God and his love and care should remind us of the
- 16:35fact that other people are not inherently the enemy.
- 16:41There might be some people that are enemies, but God has given
- 16:45us other people so that we would have family relationships and
- 16:50friendships and and close covenant membership with one
- 16:54another within the local church that were connected through the
- 16:57Holy Spirit. And a trusting attitude towards
- 17:00other believers is a good and a right thing.
- 17:04Verses 12 through 16 there he says, OK, So what now can I do
- 17:08for God? How can I repay Yahweh for all
- 17:11the good he's done for me? And he gives a couple of things
- 17:13that I can do for God because of how good he's been.
- 17:18He says, I'll take the cup of salvation and call on the name
- 17:21of the Lord. Even as this would have been
- 17:25sung during Passover time, you can think about the cup that
- 17:29they would drink. Even now as Christians, when we
- 17:32observe the Lord's Supper, we take this cup of salvation and I
- 17:36mentioned it in my sermon, but I'm going to say it again
- 17:38because I love it so much. As we think about Jesus, He was
- 17:42the one that drank the cup of suffering from the hand of God.
- 17:46Think about the Garden of Gethsemane that he would have
- 17:48been at shortly after singing this song, where he said, My
- 17:52God, if it be thy will, let this cup pass from me.
- 17:59Nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done.
- 18:02And because Jesus took the cup of suffering, we can take the
- 18:06cup of salvation. Verse #14 Not only does he take
- 18:10the cup of salvation, but he says, I'll fulfill my vows to
- 18:12Yahweh in the presence of all His peoples.
- 18:16He says, God, what I told you I was going to do, I'm actually
- 18:19going to do it for you today. What have you told God that
- 18:22you're going to do? Are you going to be in His word?
- 18:24Are you going to pray? Are you going to do kind actions
- 18:28to others? Are you going to say good things
- 18:31to other people to build them up?
- 18:33Are you, you know, going to give to the Lord?
- 18:36Are you going to share your faith with other people?
- 18:39Whatever you have told God that you're going to do, do it.
- 18:43And if you've told God you are my Lord, like Jesus is my Savior
- 18:47and my Lord, then whatever he has commanded you to do in his
- 18:52word, then you should be faithful to fulfill that vow to
- 18:55the Lord that he is actually the one that calls the shots in your
- 18:58life. Verse 15, the death of his
- 19:00faithful ones is valuable. And you always say, and I can't
- 19:07read this verse without thinking of the death of Christ, the most
- 19:11valuable death that there could ever be, the only truly faithful
- 19:15one. And because of the valuable
- 19:17death of Christ, we experience full and total forever permanent
- 19:23forgiveness and reconciliation to God.
- 19:27So verse 16, he says, Lord, I am indeed your servant.
- 19:31I am your servant, the son of your female servant.
- 19:33He says, God, whatever you tell me to do, that's what I'm doing.
- 19:37I answer to you. And then I love the end of verse
- 19:4016. He says you have loosened my
- 19:42bonds, that even though I work for God, I'm his servant, I'm
- 19:45his slave. It is still a voluntary love and
- 19:49following. And it's because of the great
- 19:51affection that I have for my Lord that I obey him.
- 19:55It is not because I am chained. It's not because I'm being
- 19:59whipped. I follow my God because of the
- 20:02love that I have for Him. Verse 17, I will offer you a
- 20:06Thanksgiving sacrifice and call on the name of the Lord.
- 20:11I'll fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all His
- 20:14people in the courts of the Lord's house within you,
- 20:17Jerusalem. Hallelujah.
- 20:20Here we are called to sacrifice to God, thanking Him for
- 20:23everything that He has done. We've got Thanksgiving coming up
- 20:26here very shortly at the time that I'm recording this.
- 20:29And I think what a joy to live in Thanksgiving, to recognize
- 20:34God, you have given me so much. You've saved me from death.
- 20:37You have put me back into a path of joy.
- 20:42You have given me purpose and mission.
- 20:45You have enlisted me into your service.
- 20:47And so, God, how in the world can I not say thank you?
- 20:51How can I not look at the cross and say thank you?
- 20:54How can I not look at the empty tomb with its promise that I too
- 20:58will rise, and my loved ones who have died in Christ, they will
- 21:02rise? And the fact that death is not
- 21:04the end and the fact that heaven is where I'm headed?
- 21:07How can I not say thank you to my God when I think about my
- 21:13family, when I think about my church, when I think about my
- 21:17work, when I think about my health or the good gifts that
- 21:21God has given me? How can I not say thank you?
- 21:24And so here the psalmist ends by saying, listen, I'm telling
- 21:29everyone, I'm offering this sacrifice in the temple in front
- 21:32of everyone in the courts of the Lord's house.
- 21:35I'm going to fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all
- 21:38of his people. Let your private faith result in
- 21:43public action. That's what God calls us to.
- 21:46And so I, I am just so encouraged through these verses
- 21:52and I hope that you've been today as well.
- 21:54Thank you for tuning in. Looking forward to Psalm 117.
- 21:58It's just a two verse Psalm next week.
- 22:03And so that might be a very, very short episode or it could
- 22:06be a long episode, who knows? It's me and then we'll have
- 22:09Psalm 118 and then we will be back to our weekday schedule of
- 22:15Tabernacle talk as we walk through Psalm 119 and then all
- 22:18the way through to the end of Book 5 of Psalms, which will
- 22:23complete that, which is crazy to me.
- 22:26I think we'll probably end up completing it the first quarter
- 22:31of 2026 and so over, you know, 202425 and then the first half
- 22:37of 26, being able to complete all of Psalms and then all the
- 22:41other books that we've been through.
- 22:43I'm just so looking forward to it.
- 22:44It is such a privilege and a joy to be able to walk through
- 22:47Scripture with you. And thank you for tuning in.
- 22:49Have a wonderful day.
