- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, Welcome to Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell
- 0:13on Inside the Birds. I'm Jeff Mosher alongside Adam Kaplan
- 0:17and of course the guy we named the show after,
- 0:20Greg Cosell, is going to go inside the tape with
- 0:23us in this very episode of the Eagles and their
- 0:26win in Kansas City. It was a tight one there
- 0:30at the end, but the Eagles pull it out.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Greg.
- 0:32Speaker 1: There's a lot to go through, both offensively and defensively.
- 0:36Those who know this show now know that we do
- 0:38it in two parts. So I figured, with the way
- 0:40the Eagles won, Greg, and some of the observations that
- 0:44I know that you made on the tape on the defense,
- 0:46let's start with the defense. It's more exciting. There was
- 0:49some energy, energetic, a lot of youthful guys making plays
- 0:53in this win for the Eagles. What stood out to
- 0:56you defensively about not only the personal the game plan
- 1:01by Vic Fangio.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the key thing that became noticeable pretty quickly,
- 1:05guys was you know they played this team. I mean
- 1:07it seemed like they played them a long time ago,
- 1:10but in terms of you know the fact that they
- 1:12played them just you know, three games ago, so which
- 1:15you know, again it was back in February, but you know,
- 1:20three games ago the Eagles, and I guess I wasn't surprised.
- 1:26It's vic Fango, It's not its first rodeo. They had
- 1:28a totally different game plan for this game than they
- 1:32did in the Super Bowl. Totally different. You wouldn't have
- 1:35thought it was the same coordinator. This game featured pressure.
- 1:40They had pressure concepts with significant snaps of five man rushes.
- 1:45They played far more man coverage. Cover one was a
- 1:48strong foundation. You I don't I didn't check back, but
- 1:53you could probably count on one hand the number of
- 1:54snaps they played Cover one in the in the Super Bowl.
- 1:58So this was a totally different game plan. And you know,
- 2:03for someone like me who loves watching tape, I I
- 2:06loved it and the play that got me excited, and
- 2:08I called all the guys in from the matchup show
- 2:10and said, hey, look at this was the mccuba smith,
- 2:13the Zadarius Smith, the what sack you know that was
- 2:17which Mahomes did not recognize at all with mccuba. You know,
- 2:21to me, that was just very representative of what we
- 2:24saw in the game.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I believe Andrew mccooba was quoted after the game saying
- 2:29that he did not have an entire sack his college career.
- 2:33Speaker 2: So right, he's a really good football player, by the way.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Greg, I want to stay on him.
- 2:39Speaker 4: And you were Look, you told us when Eagles made
- 2:41the trade for Gardon Johnson to twenty twenty two. I
- 2:43mean you you, I mean you're a big fan. Gardon
- 2:47Johnson backed up with his play two separate occasions with Eagles. Right,
- 2:51so they replaced Macoba, he replaces mccooba rather uh in it. Look,
- 2:57I don't we don't need to compare players. But and
- 3:00Syrianni's talked about it, and Fanzo has talked about it.
- 3:03He has a notes for the football. And I know
- 3:05it's kind of a cliche, but what did you really
- 3:08like about mccuba go really back from Clemson back.
- 3:10Speaker 2: To Clemson in Yeah, No, I watched mccouver for a
- 3:12couple of years, and I didn't watch his freshman tape
- 3:15at Clemson, but he really burst onto the college scene
- 3:17as many might recall. You know, rarely do I use
- 3:21the word instincts because I think you have to define
- 3:23what that means. It's an easy word to throw out
- 3:26but what we've I know, we've talked about this before.
- 3:30Macooba just sees things fast, and in some ways, he's
- 3:34like a quarterback that sees things some guys do some
- 3:37guys don't. You know, that's hard to teach, and I
- 3:40think he just sees it fast and because of that,
- 3:44he's constantly playing with a quick trigger. I mean, you
- 3:47see that he made a great play in the run
- 3:49game also combining a tackle with Zadarius Smith if you
- 3:52recall that play. Yes, but he just sees things fast
- 3:56and therefore he reacts and he has a great under
- 4:00standing innate because obviously guys get coached all through, you know,
- 4:04their careers when they start playing, but at some point
- 4:07you just have to see it and react the right way.
- 4:10And he just reacts the right way. And you know,
- 4:13the biggest issue with him will be staying healthy because
- 4:16he gained some weight, but you can see by his
- 4:18body frame he's just not a big man. You know,
- 4:21He's never going to be two hundred and twenty pounds and
- 4:23look like a big man, you know, but he's a
- 4:25really good football player.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Greg sticking on that secondary look, I mean, the Eagles
- 4:31played forty according to your notes. Forty five snaps of
- 4:35the fifty seven snaps were either nickel or dimes, So
- 4:38that's heavily nickel and dyme. But the Chiefs played a
- 4:41lot of twelve personnel, even some thirteen. So how often
- 4:45do you see teams counter twelve personnel with that much nickel?
- 4:49Speaker 2: It depends on the opponent. No one's really worried about
- 4:51the Chiefs run game. I mean, I'm just being honest. Yeah,
- 4:55that's been a problem for the Chiefs over these last
- 4:57couple of years when they haven't had same kind of
- 5:00offense they had, you know, three, four, five years ago,
- 5:03is they don't really have a stabilizing run game. You
- 5:07know a lot of teams, if they're struggling offensively, they
- 5:10hand the ball off, they get back on track, they
- 5:12get back into hey it's second and three. You know
- 5:16that kind of offense where then your playbook opens up
- 5:19and you can kind of and you know what a
- 5:20run game does, I mean, it wears down a defense.
- 5:23You know, it's the manhood element of football.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I think people in Philadelphia kind of know what
- 5:27that's like when you're exactly great your running back. Yeah.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Yeah, So they don't really have that. So I'm sure
- 5:34that in the game planning, you know, vic Fango and
- 5:37staff were not thinking, oh my god, we're just going
- 5:39to really get hurt by the run game if we
- 5:40play nickel and they're not, they're not going to get
- 5:43hurt by it. And plus Degene is a very physical player.
- 5:46We've seen Macouba play downhill with tenacity because he plays,
- 5:50he plays in the nickel. He did not play again
- 5:53in the base. They stayed with that sort of coverage
- 5:57delineation where if it was true, Basse was outside and
- 6:01Sydney Brown was the safety, and if it was nickel,
- 6:04Dejane came inside into the slot and Macouba played safety.
- 6:08So that's seemingly what they're going to do. Whether that
- 6:11changes over the course, you know, it's two games. You
- 6:13don't know, that could theoretically change, but it's probably smart
- 6:18because you know, you don't want to wear Macouba out.
- 6:20I mean again, the body type is such that you
- 6:22you know, maybe it's better to do this. Well, we'll
- 6:24just see how it goes. But I mean, Bond and
- 6:27Campbell literally play every snap. And you know, if I
- 6:32you know, you know me, I'm not sarcastic, and I
- 6:33don't mean this in a sarcastic way, but it's it's
- 6:36not likely that Nikobe Dean's getting his job back, and
- 6:42he's just a superior I mean even place he doesn't
- 6:45make you just see the twitch with which he moves,
- 6:48I mean, and you lose sight of the fact that
- 6:50he's six three to forty plus. They're starting to They
- 6:54used him more in this game rushing the quarterback than
- 6:56they did week one, and he can do that. You know.
- 6:59Now Dean can do that too. That's what he was
- 7:01very good out at Georgia. But there's a big difference
- 7:03just in size and twitch.
- 7:05Speaker 4: Sure, Greg one more thing on the secondary because people
- 7:09want to know Doroty Jackson was it better this time
- 7:12around for him?
- 7:13Speaker 2: They didn't really go after him. I mean, they don't
- 7:15have that kind of passing. I'm being honest.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 2: The one thing that was evident though is Mitchell was
- 7:19the field corner and Jackson was the boundary corner every snap.
- 7:22So Mitchell did not play side, you know, one side
- 7:26as he did all of last year. You know where
- 7:28he was the right corner and Slay was the left corner.
- 7:31This year, Mitchell is the field corner and Jackson is
- 7:35the boundary corner.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Why do they do that? Greg? Is that because you
- 7:39take your lesser corner and give them the sideline help
- 7:42and you give your better corner of the field.
- 7:44Speaker 2: You know, it's a great question. I bet there's different
- 7:46philosophies about that. You know, very often teams like to
- 7:53put their best corner to the boundary.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I mean that's what I thought. Yeah, I've had that.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Converge station at the combine with both defensive coaches and
- 8:01wide receiver coaches. So you know, I'm just being honest.
- 8:06I don't have a brilliant answer for that, Jeff, because
- 8:08I don't know what vic Fango's philosophy is, you know,
- 8:12and again it could have been just this game too.
- 8:16There's not one receiver on the Chiefs that you feel
- 8:19like we better stop that guy or we're in trouble, exactly.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Right, So it'll be it'll be really fascinating.
- 8:26Speaker 2: We don't get any example. I already watched the Rams
- 8:28defense against the Titans offense, yep, and Jerius Sneed matched
- 8:32up the whole game to DeVante Adams, right, And the
- 8:35reason he did that not is because Nicu is a
- 8:38movement guy. So you don't know where he's going to
- 8:40line up, whereas Adams is not a movement guy in
- 8:43their offense, so sneed matched up to Nkua, I mean
- 8:46to Adams on almost every snap. Now, will the Eagles
- 8:50feel like, hey, we want Mitchell on Adams? You know,
- 8:53we don't know going forward. It could have been just
- 8:56this game.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Right, That's I was just about to say that we'll
- 8:59find Uh, it'll be a fascinating look at what they
- 9:01do in Week three against the Rams compared to what
- 9:05they did in Week one and then Week two, which
- 9:07were different. Why don't we talk about the front of
- 9:10the defensive front? Will start on the inside. Jalen Carter
- 9:14played his first game, and overall, what jumped out at
- 9:17you from Carter Jomo Jordan Davis, who I thought it
- 9:21was interesting? Jordan Davis was I believe the first interior
- 9:24pass rusher in the four man front on the first
- 9:27third down that the Chiefs faced.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought I thought Davis had another strong game.
- 9:32Really some strong snaps in the run game, not as
- 9:35many as a pass rusher, but you know, it was
- 9:38certainly there. It wasn't as if, you know, he looked bad.
- 9:41You know, he just didn't necessarily get close to the quarterback.
- 9:44That doesn't mean he played poorly. But I thought again,
- 9:47he was a factor in the run game. You know,
- 9:49he obviously played you know, a few less snaps percentage wise,
- 9:52just because Carter was back and they have a rotation.
- 9:55But I thought he played really well. You know, I'm
- 9:59trying to think who else, you know, stood out. I
- 10:01thought that Ajomo played significantly better this week. He had
- 10:05some strong two or three individual plays that I remember
- 10:08where he had strong power inside rushes, you know, when
- 10:13Carter's just caught her. Because he dictates how teams play,
- 10:16you know. And by the way, the thing, the point
- 10:18that I wanted to make on that Mcuba, which you
- 10:21know obviously you saw my notes on that Mcuba Saint
- 10:25Zadarius Smith sack, and this was absolutely intentional. They aligned
- 10:29Carter at defensive right tackle, where he rarely plays. Okay,
- 10:33he played five snaps in this game, but that's even
- 10:36a lot for him. He normally doesn't play there, maybe
- 10:38one or two snaps a game. And they did that
- 10:41intentionally because that was opposite where mccouba was coming from,
- 10:45and they knew that the center Humphrey would slide to Carter,
- 10:49which he's pretty much been doing all game up to
- 10:52that point, so he would not be in a position
- 10:54to react to mccuba, who then shot through the gap.
- 10:58You know, so this is done intentionally. None of this
- 11:01is done on a whim. It's not random bus. But
- 11:04Carter's just caught her. I mean, he's a very tough guy.
- 11:07The stats don't really mean a lot with Carter. You know,
- 11:09he's not going to have seventy tackles. You know, maybe
- 11:12one year he'll get fifteen or sixteen sacks if it
- 11:15just works out that way. But he's just a dominant force.
- 11:19Speaker 4: And he draws so many double teams that Yeah, Greg,
- 11:22God asked you about the z Man so Darius Smith
- 11:25Jefferano strongly he'd play, but there was no watch. He
- 11:28noticed him, Greg, he played more than josh Usha. Give
- 11:32us an idea of what the tape look like to you?
- 11:33Speaker 2: For Smith, Yeah, I thought I thought he played well.
- 11:36I mean, you noticed him. He played well in the
- 11:37run game. You know, he's a big guy. I mean
- 11:40people might not, you know, obviously in Philly, I'm sure
- 11:43a lot of people once they saw they signed him
- 11:45probably said, oh, let's take a look at a Darius
- 11:47Smith and go back to YouTube and watch him. But
- 11:49he's a big guy, long arms, athletic. He can playoff contact.
- 11:54He did that a number of times in the run game.
- 11:56He understands how to set the edge, you know, he
- 11:58understands how to play. And he's always been a solid
- 12:01pass rusher. And throughout his career, by the way, and
- 12:04we'll see what happens with the Eagles. It didn't happen
- 12:07in this game, but throughout his career he's moved inside
- 12:10a lot as well. So he's played on the outside,
- 12:12he's played on the inside. You know, he's moved all around.
- 12:16You know. Don't forget this was his first game. He
- 12:18was only probably at what three practices, so I'm sure
- 12:21they weren't giving him a whole bunch, you know, but
- 12:23he can he can move around, Yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Greg, real quick.
- 12:27Speaker 4: I remember we talked on the pregame show that theyll
- 12:31if he plays, which we thought he played, But how
- 12:32much he plays with depend on what kind of shape
- 12:34he's in.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Well, clearly was a good shape.
- 12:36Speaker 2: He looks in shape, just you know a lot. Yeah.
- 12:40So you know, the other interesting thing, they had some
- 12:43interesting you know, alignments on the defensive front because they
- 12:47wanted a spy Mahomes at times. So there were a
- 12:49couple of times there Hunt and Smith lined up on
- 12:51the same side and they used Hunt as a spy.
- 12:54You know, you're always adding things to play to your opponent.
- 12:58You know, you have your staples, and some team you
- 13:00can play your staples, you know, and your staples are
- 13:03good enough, you know, because you're good. But other teams
- 13:05you have to do specific things that you game plan
- 13:08in that week of practice because of the nature of
- 13:11your opponent.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Did you notice the spying happening later in like second
- 13:15half after Mahones had beat them or was that.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I did, I did, so that was an
- 13:20adjustment absolutely, Yeah, he had those scrambles. You know what
- 13:23did I tell you guys last week too? I said,
- 13:25it seems like the Chiefs offense has become a home
- 13:27scrambles That showed up in this game pretty quickly.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And I feel like Vick, even though he
- 13:34made the adjustment, would probably trade some of those scrambles.
- 13:37I mean, he's happy to have them as opposed to
- 13:40trying to do something differently and getting beat over the
- 13:43top right right, a bigger play.
- 13:45Speaker 2: You know, and sometimes great players make great plays and
- 13:48you know, you just you move on to the next play.
- 13:49I mean, you know, that's that's the way it kind
- 13:52of works.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, he threw We talked about the Matthew
- 13:55stat he threw a no look pass. I didn't realize
- 13:57it until I was watching.
- 13:58Speaker 2: It on tape.
- 13:59Speaker 1: He did one of those like looking that way and
- 14:01fired it. I think it was the kelsey while he
- 14:03was getting rushed and I'm it's just one of those
- 14:05unbelievable but hes yeah, and then they're gonna see it's
- 14:10just like that. They'll see see it more on Sunday
- 14:12with Stafford. The linebackers, Greg, the stack linebackers, as we
- 14:17move away from the edge of the line, they were
- 14:20very They had a big role against the Cowboys because
- 14:24there were a couple of plays in coverage that came
- 14:26up really big in that game. It feels like this
- 14:29game plan or responsibilities were a little bit different based
- 14:33on how Kansas City maneuver.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Question. So you didn't see Bond make as many tackles,
- 14:38you know, but that doesn't mean guys play poorly. And
- 14:41see that's where and I'm just being honest, that's where
- 14:44It's hard for me to answer because you know, as
- 14:46far as we know, Bond could have done exactly what
- 14:50he was asked to do, and that doesn't just because
- 14:53he doesn't have twelve tackles doesn't mean he didn't play
- 14:55a good game. You know, we don't. That's the stuff.
- 14:58You'd have to be in their meetings to know that. Uh.
- 15:01But certainly bonn or Campbell didn't get beaten anyway where
- 15:03he went, Oh my god, look what just happened?
- 15:06Speaker 1: Right?
- 15:06Speaker 2: But you know, they just didn't make a ton of tackles.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Right, but they were they almost were asked to play
- 15:11more on the line, both of them at the times,
- 15:13than they were against the.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Candy Campbell on the line, you know, bonn Uh. It'll
- 15:18be interesting to see how that plays out going forward,
- 15:20because mostly we've seen Bond going back to last year
- 15:23be you know, move onto the line. Now Campbell is
- 15:25the guy who's they're putting on the line of scrimmage.
- 15:28Both can do it right. Great.
- 15:31Speaker 4: One thing, I'm just gonna have this one guy I
- 15:33thought played better and I'm interested to see what you
- 15:35thought because I thought Jaelex Hunt was very quiet Week one.
- 15:38Speaker 3: What do you think of him?
- 15:38Speaker 2: This week. Well, it's funny. I think I made a
- 15:41note that on the second play of the game, he
- 15:43showed some knock back power in the run game right
- 15:46away versus left tackle Simmons. I'm sure they've worked on
- 15:48that with him because that's not you know, he didn't
- 15:50grow up doing that. Adam, as you know, wasn't. He
- 15:53wasn't that kind of player. He was a career. Yeah,
- 15:57I mean that's that second play of the game was
- 16:00run play. I mean, he just knocked back Simmons. You
- 16:02could see him Simmons head snap right back. So you know,
- 16:07I think as you've talked about, which I think is
- 16:09one hundred percent true, and you've made the point at him,
- 16:11he's not quite ready to be a pass rusher where
- 16:13you just line him up and go get the quarterback.
- 16:16I'm sure that's one reason that brought to Darius Smith
- 16:18in That's one reason Uch is going to still get
- 16:20snaps in Pact. I would think that Hunt will be
- 16:25able to do that. It's just going to take a
- 16:27little more time. It's a process. It's an evolution over time.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Sure. So last thing before we get to the breakdown
- 16:33some of the clips you've talked about some of these already,
- 16:35so it's good. We're always I like when we're on
- 16:36the same page, Greg, when you sort of isolate some
- 16:39plays and I've already because people don't know, we don't.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Like, no, we don't really plan this. We just kind
- 16:44of talked ball.
- 16:45Speaker 1: I try to. I sit at my computer with my
- 16:48own you know, NFL protein, and I'm like, what do
- 16:50I think Greg really wants to highlight? And good enough,
- 16:53we got some, so that's good. But I do want
- 16:56to ask you this because we talked in the pregame
- 16:58show about the fact that the Chiefs have tried to
- 17:02address their left side of the line issues. I mean,
- 17:04the kid in the first round. You saw his athleticism
- 17:07when he chased chased down mccoopa to make the tackle.
- 17:09Josh Simmons uh and Sue Ama at left guard he's starting.
- 17:14He's he's clearly a better athlete and stronger than the kid,
- 17:16the guy that were playing there right Kingsley. By the way,
- 17:28he's not actually impersonating a left guard. He actually is one,
- 17:32right now, Sue.
- 17:32Speaker 2: My Well, my guess is Chiefs fans might have thought
- 17:36in the Super Bowl he was impersonating on left guard.
- 17:38Probably you know, I hate kind of came out, you know,
- 17:43for this, people.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Of Greg said, Greg doesn't have a sense to hear me.
- 17:46You just saw it breaking.
- 17:48Speaker 1: But I still felt that Mahomes, even though there was
- 17:52there were good pressures, I felt Mahomes played as if
- 17:54he didn't trust his protection. I felt that there were
- 17:57some throws that were wide or high at the ankles
- 18:00that he normally might make in other years. But he
- 18:03just looked like his own clock was a little bit spetter.
- 18:06Speaker 2: And I think he could probably say that going back
- 18:08the last couple of years. Yew. I'm not a quarterback.
- 18:12I've never been in that situation. I've never taken shots
- 18:15or gotten hit on the blind side. So I'm not
- 18:17going to sit here and say that's good or bad,
- 18:18because you know, I couldn't speak to that. I think though,
- 18:23that coaches would probably say that at some point we
- 18:28got to work through that because otherwise you don't have
- 18:30a pass game, or which they really haven't had, you know,
- 18:33a consistent one. You know, Mahomes is always capable of
- 18:37making special plays. I mean, look what happened in this game.
- 18:40All of a sudden, after a game in which their
- 18:42pass game really gained no yards either. He hits Thornton,
- 18:45you know, Thornton for the long touchdown, although he missed
- 18:48him earlier in the drive, which you never see Mahomes
- 18:50miss like that when Thornton was wide open, which I
- 18:54thought was a mistake by the coverage. We don't need
- 18:56to get into what I thought, because I could be right,
- 18:58could be wrong, but you know, and I thought Mahomes.
- 19:03Mahomes has missed some throws, more than we've seen over
- 19:05the last year or so. But again, I'm not going
- 19:08to sit here, you know, because I've never been back there,
- 19:11you know, having to worry about that. Hey, I only
- 19:13have three seconds where I'm going to get the crap
- 19:15beat out of me. So I'm not going to say
- 19:16that Mahomes is right or wrong. But they've got to
- 19:19figure that out because otherwise they're not going to have
- 19:21a consistent pass game.
- 19:23Speaker 5: Hey, you know that one guy in the group chat
- 19:25who hit a five leg parlay week one and he
- 19:28wouldn't shut up about it for the rest of the season.
- 19:31Sounds like Kaplin, right, Yeah, yeah, it could be him.
- 19:33It could be you, and we would all want to
- 19:37be you. My bookie makes it stupid easy to get
- 19:41in on the action, whether it's college ball, NFL Super
- 19:45Contest and Survivor pools. All the spreads, player props and
- 19:49in game lines that you could want, all under one roof.
- 19:54Speaker 1: What more could you want than that?
- 19:56Speaker 6: If you're new to my bookie, use our code the
- 20:01Birds th G B I r DS the Birds use
- 20:06the code, and any bet you choose up to five hundred.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Dollars is fully covered.
- 20:12Speaker 5: Make your play and if it doesn't hit, you get
- 20:14it right back when you opt in using your bet
- 20:17back bonus token. There is no better time to jump
- 20:21in right now. No better place to play football is back.
- 20:26Let's make some money with my bookie.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Absolutely all right, and it may not kill Andy Reid
- 20:31every once in a while. As we start to look
- 20:33at the all twenty two here, maybe it wouldn't kill
- 20:35him to, I don't know, leave his running back in
- 20:38for past pro every once in a while. So this
- 20:40is the place.
- 20:41Speaker 2: See, this was the one where they shifted into a
- 20:44bear front, so they'd eat up the two guards and
- 20:47the center and there'd be nobody to block Zach Bond
- 20:50hitting the a gap. You can see it. This is
- 20:55exactly what is in this the play yeah, this is the.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Play, yep, Greg land a baarfront please.
- 21:00Speaker 2: So bare front means that you're taking your two uh well,
- 21:04your most interior defensive tackle, and you basically line him
- 21:08up either right over the center or just shading the center,
- 21:12and then you take your two the two tackles I
- 21:15guess should call them outside of him, and they pretty
- 21:17much are lined up over the two guards. So the
- 21:22guards in the center have to block those three guys. Right. So, now,
- 21:26if your back is going to free release and you
- 21:29shoot a guy into the a gap from the second level,
- 21:32there's no one to block him because the center and
- 21:34the two guards at him are eaten up by the
- 21:37three defensive linemen. I remember they shifted to this, and
- 21:40as soon as they shifted to this, Jeff I said
- 21:43to myself, the bond's coming. I've just seen it too
- 21:45many times.
- 21:48Speaker 1: And there's so there's there's the five guys on the
- 21:50line now with I think it was Campbell that came
- 21:52up to the line, like you said, right right.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Right, So so in a sense, also, Adam, you have
- 21:56what they call you know, it's five. It's it's five protection.
- 22:00That's what every team calls it. Five zero pass protection
- 22:03where your five offensive linemen are responsible for the five
- 22:08innocentse defensive lineman. Let's count Campbell in this front is
- 22:11a defensive lineman on the edge. So if the back releases,
- 22:15which he did, there's no one to block Zach Bond right.
- 22:18Speaker 1: And part of this is the knowledge Vic has that
- 22:21most people who study inur Reid is that this running pack,
- 22:23because Andy Reid wants five outlets, is not going to
- 22:26stay in to protect. So that's going to allow him
- 22:29to send more rushers than they have.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Blocker or this is the classic case. Guys, you know
- 22:36you hear all. We've all heard for years and years
- 22:39and years. Fans have heard it. When you hear people
- 22:41say they attack the protection and broke down the protection.
- 22:44There's a great example of that. They can't. They can't
- 22:47block Zack Baond in this in this protection with the
- 22:49back that's the checko free releasing, you can't block Zach Bond.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Right because the offense, the tight end doesn't stay in either.
- 22:56So it really gives you five on right, five five
- 23:00on five, but you got three guys blocking two on
- 23:03the left side because of the protection scheme.
- 23:05Speaker 2: And sometimes teams do this kind of stuff and they'll
- 23:07drop out defense, you know, the edge guys, but you
- 23:11can't change your protection in the middle of the plate.
- 23:13Speaker 1: So it still works, right, And just so we get
- 23:16a little different viewpoint on it here.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Yeah, see they see the shift. You see Campbell kind
- 23:24of call the shift right, you see. Yep. As soon
- 23:29as I saw that, I said, Bond's coming.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Right, and look, you got three guys blocking two.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Trey Smith kind of recognized it late. You know, it's
- 23:38not his that's Bond's not his responsibility. He just, you know,
- 23:41try to at least give him a shove, but he couldn't.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Right and honestly, and so when you get a quick
- 23:47slant that's open, that should be pitch and catch, and
- 23:51it becomes an incompletion And I believe that was third down,
- 23:53was it not? I was second and eleven, Second and.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Eleven, okay, yeah, but I mean that should be you
- 23:59know that that's pitching catch. But but because of the pressure,
- 24:02it was incomplete.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Greg One thing I thought watching it is that Fangio
- 24:08knew without Racie rights, but without Worthy, you're taking away
- 24:11to his top four pass targets. There's a certain way
- 24:14you can play when you know certain guys will not
- 24:16be there. I know Rice is not a speedster, but
- 24:18he's a top possession receiver they have.
- 24:20Speaker 2: He has a great feel for space.
- 24:23Speaker 3: And then you've got Worthy, who I know.
- 24:25Speaker 4: I know how much they thought he and we'll see
- 24:27what happens because he could come back the next couple
- 24:29of weeks. But they thought he had a really good
- 24:30off season. Who could absolutely fly. He had Taekwon Thorne,
- 24:35who could run. You know he could run, no doubt.
- 24:37He could run too, obviously, but he's not the strongest
- 24:40guy in the world. He didn't do anything with New England.
- 24:43That's why they cut him, so that he I think
- 24:45that you have an you have an agent, Kelsey. To
- 24:47be honest, I felt like Vic felt he could do
- 24:50some things he hadn't. He didn't have to worry about
- 24:51a lot of great pass targets.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I just go like like the Super Bowl.
- 24:56I think Vic felt that there were certain areas he
- 24:58could exploit, and he exploited it. I mean, that's it's
- 25:01as simple as that. I mean when I say it's
- 25:03as simple as that, that's the starting point. I don't
- 25:05mean it's simple. Anybody can do it, but I mean
- 25:07I think that's the starting point and you work from there.
- 25:10Speaker 1: All right. So that was one example of what we
- 25:12call a free rusher. And here's another. The fair the
- 25:15play you referenced the Andrew the blitz. This is the
- 25:18sack and the blitz by mccooba in the sack.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and I believe this was dying. This was not Nickel.
- 25:24I believe this was dying because Sidney Brown, I believe
- 25:26is playing on the back end. They're in two shells
- 25:30because mccooba is is in an overhanging position to the
- 25:33trip side the passing strength. And see this is where
- 25:36Jalen Carter is lined up at right defensive tackle as
- 25:40opposed to the left where he normally lines up right.
- 25:43So what you're going to get here is you're going
- 25:45to get mccuba blitzing. And because the center Humphrey Creed
- 25:50Humphrey is a very good center. See before you run it, Jeff,
- 25:53let's just walk through it. Or actually we'll go to
- 25:55the end zone.
- 25:55Speaker 1: You have to say the other angle will be good,
- 25:57So we'll give him this the show free rusher.
- 26:01Speaker 2: And Brady during the telecast was actually surprised that Mahomes
- 26:05did not see this and recognize it. So I'm not
- 26:07saying anything that you know. So obviously you know what
- 26:11you're going to see here is there's Carter to the
- 26:14to the right at that defensive right tackle. So now
- 26:17the way the protection is mapped out, you're going to
- 26:19have the five defensive linemen are going to be responsible
- 26:24for the four down and probably bond here because we're
- 26:28at Campbell's not in the box on this right. So
- 26:32that's what's going to happen. So what you have is
- 26:34the right guards responsible for Jordan Davis, the right tackles
- 26:37responsible for Nolan Smith, and with Humphrey sliding to our
- 26:43right the left of the of the offense to help
- 26:46with Carter, that means there's no one unless the back
- 26:50is going to get involved across the formation. There's no
- 26:53one to block Macouba right. And you see, I'm just
- 26:57telling you what Brady said. He's a lot smarter than
- 26:59I am when to come to about play. He said
- 27:02that that you know, Patrick's got to got to recognize this.
- 27:05Speaker 1: I mean, mccooba does kind of tip the hand. I mean,
- 27:08you see him come in.
- 27:09Speaker 2: But he's trying not to. He's trying to show that
- 27:11he's involved. In coverage too.
- 27:13Speaker 3: True, but you've got to be aware of him.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Maybe it should have tipped him off. And this might
- 27:17be extra cerebral that Jill and Carter is lined up
- 27:21over left guard instead of right guard right, because that's
- 27:24where the double team, as you mentioned, is going to go.
- 27:27They're automatically The other interesting.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Thing here and I don't know if I'm getting into
- 27:31you know again, I don't know what Tom Brady would say,
- 27:34but they're in dye, which is they don't play very
- 27:36often at all. So why is mccooba there and not
- 27:39on the back.
- 27:39Speaker 1: End right right? And there you go, so you're not
- 27:43there for his health.
- 27:44Speaker 2: He's not there on that piece of grass.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Right, So you got one on ones Greg, as you
- 27:49set up all on the outside here and on the
- 27:51inside here where it's Jordan Davis and not Carter the double.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I actually think Jordan Davis almost screws up. I think
- 27:57Jordan Davis should have gone a little more inside on
- 28:01his instead of look at how much of christ Smith.
- 28:05I think he should have attacked half a man to
- 28:07the inside. But that's just me. He almost Crewcuba skipped
- 28:12over his foot.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, unless unless the Macoba was supposed to go
- 28:17with out the middle of the gap. Right. I actually
- 28:20thought he was when I watched it, and just he
- 28:22just took his own path. But either way he gets
- 28:25there and once again you got two guys blocking one
- 28:28and one guy free to the quarterback. Right, great stuff?
- 28:32All right? Hey, fall is planting season. Did you know

- 30:02you have referenced today. Now, this is the big stop
- 30:05that mccouba makes on third and one.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Oh, this was phenomenal because he's matched up against a
- 30:11wide receiver here. Okay, they're playing cover one here, and
- 30:15because it's trips, you know they have him because Kelsey
- 30:19I think is split up top is he not? Or
- 30:21down below?
- 30:22Speaker 1: No, Kelsey's here right slot. Yeah, he's in the right slot.
- 30:26I think mccooba, like you said, is over the passing
- 30:28strength side.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Yeah, mccooba's to the passing strength side. So he's matched
- 30:31up on Hollywood Brown and they're playing cover one, so
- 30:33he's got to play brand. By the way, Micooba does
- 30:35have slot experience, so this is not as if he's
- 30:37never done this before, right, And you know the way
- 30:41they run these routes, it's it's, you know, it's got
- 30:43a little bit of a mesh el I mean, so
- 30:44he's got to go over the top because he can't
- 30:46really go underneath because he just run into Bond.
- 30:49Speaker 1: He's kind of in.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Position to be a lark spy defender, you know, because
- 30:54this was third down and mcooba does a phenomenal job
- 30:59of you know, here's where some speed comes into play,
- 31:02and he does a phenomenal tackling job because now this
- 31:05becomes fourth down. This was just a really good play.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Do you know what this player reminded me of a
- 31:10little bit.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Greg Don't tell me Cooper de gene against Cincinnati a
- 31:13few years ago.
- 31:14Speaker 1: One hundred is what I thought on fourth and one.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Yah tapped into my head.
- 31:21Speaker 4: Remember on that play it was it was Rogers and Cooba.
- 31:28Speaker 3: They had some gene Gene I'm sorry, but I know
- 31:33there was some pre snap.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, they had it about it.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, there to go and then yeah, right.
- 31:40Speaker 4: You see mccooba hit his right thigh. Maybe that was
- 31:43a signal or something. I don't know.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, but this Yeah, Now, as soon as
- 31:46you said they reminded me of I thought of that play.
- 31:48It bobbed right into my head. But that was a
- 31:50great play by mccooba.
- 31:52Speaker 3: I gotta tell you, they are really well coached. I
- 31:53know the players give them credit that they're doing great,
- 31:56but they're.
- 31:56Speaker 2: You know what's funny. The more tape i'm watching now,
- 32:00not just to the Eagles, you know, of all teams,
- 32:02I am such becoming even more and more believe in coaching.
- 32:06And I always was, but I just feel like it's
- 32:09so so critical for you know, there's a lot of
- 32:13good players in the NFL. There's a lot of good players,
- 32:15I mean, you know, and particularly you know, being at
- 32:19the Titans training camp this year for three days and
- 32:22just I mean, these guys, there are athletes that they're
- 32:24just on. These guys are unbelievable, the size, the movement,
- 32:28there's so many good athletes. So much of this is coaching.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Right, You've got a great combination there of coaching the
- 32:34right call and then an athlete like Macouba who can
- 32:36come over and make that play. All right, you mentioned
- 32:39Moro Ajomo. We'll take one last look here on defense.
- 32:42That looks like an overloaded alignment there.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm just trying, oh the sack to start. Yeah.
- 32:48I didn't write the detail on this. It started the
- 32:51last drive drive, so I think it's first down.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's right. It was first down, and that's
- 32:56that was critical because this was voted.
- 33:00Speaker 2: They have three defensive linemen to one side of the
- 33:02offensive center. It's a loaded front.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Right, and then you see Nolan Smith sort of wide here,
- 33:08but the way they rush there, he goes pushing them back. Yeah,
- 33:15I mean that was just a very powerful power rush.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Rush. So let me ask you this. You're the chiefs, right,
- 33:22you see it's overloaded. So when you're the left guard
- 33:25Suamayataya and the left tackle Simmons and even Humphrey here,
- 33:29what is the thought process you got to expect? Usually
- 33:31some kind of twist or a stunt.
- 33:33Speaker 2: You would think you they didn't here, but you almost
- 33:35always get a stunt concept from a loaded front. They
- 33:39did not. Now, very often what teams do, which the
- 33:42Eagles did not do here because this was fourth quarter,
- 33:45was it not?
- 33:45Speaker 1: It was I think opening drive.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, So very often what teams do is they
- 33:50walk up a linebacker on the ball across from the
- 33:54guard opposite the load so that means that guard can't
- 33:58help with the loaded side of the front because there's
- 34:01a guy right in front of him who theoretically could
- 34:03come right. He didn't do that here, so he goes
- 34:06to the load side. Yep, yeah, which he should because
- 34:09there's no one in front of him, and you know,
- 34:11and therefore you go one on one with your left
- 34:13tackle and Nolan Smith, which is fine.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Right, You're right. A lot of times, even if you're
- 34:17not gonna sit, you'll walk this linebacker here and then
- 34:20drop him at the last second so that the left
- 34:22guard is still the left guard is still rolling.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Acknowledge him. You know, you try to occupy the left
- 34:28guard so that he can't get involved, because you know
- 34:30what a lot of teams do. The Niners are great
- 34:33with this with Bosa is what are called long stunts.
- 34:36So they have Bosa being on the outside of the
- 34:40load side, looping all the way around into the a
- 34:43gap and you make sure you eat up that left guard,
- 34:47the guard opposite the load, so he can't slide inside
- 34:50right right.
- 34:52Speaker 1: So Ojomo goes head onhead with him and really just
- 34:54drives him back. Use those long arms. We talked about
- 34:57his long arms and his power, and I actually I
- 35:00think Nolan Smith plays a big he does actor and
- 35:02has played because he makes Mahomes have to walk.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Up into it to step up, and he.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Doesn't rush too wide, which we talked about last week.
- 35:11Speaker 2: With the look at him bend a little here, This.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Is good, great bend. Look at that bend.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Yeah, look at it. It's like a picture you know
- 35:17when they you know, get it's like Tom Stever. I
- 35:21know I'm going back one hundred years.
- 35:24Speaker 1: But think about it. If he doesn't bend like he
- 35:26has to come up up north instead of east west,
- 35:29then Mahomes probably has an alleyway to run as right gets.
- 35:33Speaker 2: To have an alleyway right there anyway, and you know,
- 35:36and but Jomo just shoved Sue and Mattea right back
- 35:39and closed down the alley.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Sports are all about competition. Every snap, every possession,

- 36:44That's code birds for a risk free first stake. That
- 36:48was good, good, good, really well really absolutely I thought
- 36:53that that was good. Those clips showed sort of not
- 36:55just the individual talent of a Joe Moore and mccuba
- 36:58or Nolan Soon, but how VIC is using these guys
- 37:01and their athleticism to cause confusion for the opponents and just.
- 37:04Speaker 2: A totally different game plan approach was just you know,
- 37:07I mean, cook Fick's been doing this forever. You know,
- 37:09that's you know, it was just great. I thought as
- 37:12I'm watching it, I'm you know, that was one of
- 37:14the first things I noticed. It was just different.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, well that is I'm sorry.
- 37:19Speaker 4: I know what, Greg, just a preview when we talked
- 37:21about Stafford for a pregame show. Stafford look pretty good
- 37:24the first two games.
- 37:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, they do so many cool things. Now that's
- 37:28a challenge. I mean, look, they played him twice last year.
- 37:31You know, it's the same coaching staff, but it's always
- 37:33a challenge. Stafford's just really good and mcveigh's really good.
- 37:36You know. Mcveay is going to have some stuff too. Yeah,
- 37:38that's just it's two really smart guys.
- 37:41Speaker 1: You know, giving him DeVante Adams to go with the
- 37:44crew and like get Yandy to a baby man. That
- 37:46was that's not fair. Yeah, all right, great stuff. That
- 37:50wraps up the offensive tape of the eagles twenty seven
- 37:53to twenty to seventeen win over the Chiefs. In part two,
- 37:56I'm sorry, that's the defensive take tape. Part two are
- 38:00gonna we are contractually obligated have Greg break down the
- 38:05offensive tape, and we'll do that in part two. So,
- 38:07for Greg Cosell and Adam Kaplan, I'm Jeff Mosher. Thanks
- 38:10for watching Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell.
