- 0:00If you could build a high school experience around your child's
- 0:05interests, goals, and strengths, what would you build?
- 0:11Welcome back to making Everyday Magic.
- 0:13My name is Shanna.
- 0:14If you are new here we are a homeschooling family of four.
- 0:17We are in our 10th year of homeschooling and our first year of high school.
- 0:22Today I am going to walk you through the high school experience
- 0:28that we are custom tailoring to our learner.
- 0:39Before we go any further, we scroll down and hit the big red subscribe button,
- 0:41turn on that bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 0:44As always, you can find me down in the comments
- 0:46or over on Instagram at Making Everyday Magic.
- 0:50Okay, so first and foremost, let me start with something that I think is relevant
- 0:53to the topic of this video, but also kind of like hilariously.
- 1:00Ironic.
- 1:00I don't know whatever the right word is.
- 1:02Hilariously, something.
- 1:04Lately in the interwebs, there has been a lot of discourse
- 1:08about people discussing homeschool.
- 1:12Not homeschoolers discussing homeschool, not homeschoolers discussing other
- 1:16people's homeschool people who just have an opinion, discussing homeschool.
- 1:21And it comes back to the stereotypes, the people you guys know.
- 1:25We talk about this a lot.
- 1:26Those kind of homeschoolers who are out in the world who are.
- 1:30Well, correction, I stand corrected, who are not out in the world,
- 1:35who are not homeschooling their children
- 1:38for the same reasons that some of us, hopefully most of you,
- 1:42hopefully everyone here who has found this video on this channel
- 1:45for the reasons we are homeschooling our kids,
- 1:47which is to provide the best possible educational experience
- 1:51to enrich their lives as much as possible and to truly, truly, truly
- 1:57devote everything we've got to providing them with an education
- 2:02that will set them up for the world, for the future that they have to live in.
- 2:06To go into rooms we'll never enter.
- 2:09To go change the world in ways that we cannot possibly fathom.
- 2:14We are homeschooling for the reasons that we want to make sure.
- 2:17Ensure that our children get the best possible leg
- 2:23up in the world that they can.
- 2:26Which, as you know, it's not the reason that many people homeschool.
- 2:30Well, like I said recently, there's been a lot of hubbub,
- 2:33a lot of kerfuffle out in the world of people discussing homeschool
- 2:37and homeschoolers, and they're painting everybody
- 2:39with a broad brush, which I think is fair, I honestly do.
- 2:42I think there's actually a lot
- 2:43of criticism happening in the world right now that I do think is fair,
- 2:48even myself.
- 2:49You know, when I grew up in a small town and if you homeschooled, you were weird.
- 2:52You were religiously weird.
- 2:54And that's the only reason anybody homeschooled.
- 2:56There was the high school.
- 2:57There was the problem kids school.
- 3:00There was the Catholic school.
- 3:02And anybody who didn't go to those three was homeschooled.
- 3:04And they did it for weird religious reasons and, and weird
- 3:07religious reasons or weird hippie reasons. And.
- 3:11Yeah, so, I mean, I totally get it, I do.
- 3:13That was my my notion, my conception of this entire,
- 3:17this entire world of homeschooling.
- 3:19And only as I became a parent and recognized
- 3:23our unique needs within our family,
- 3:25did I recognize that there could be other reasons that U.M.
- 3:27school, which I think is really short sighted because go with me
- 3:31on this journey.
- 3:32How often do you hear about an elite gymnast?
- 3:36Right.
- 3:36A light gymnast or elite figure skater who's going to the Olympics?
- 3:39Those kids are doing that at, you know?
- 3:41Ten 1112 1314 right.
- 3:43Prepping for that Olympic experience.
- 3:46They are not school still in full daytime school.
- 3:51What if some of us
- 3:54homeschool with the intent to make our children Elliott in the sense
- 4:00of giving them the best possible resources to pursue whatever it is that they have?
- 4:05And what if we kind of lay that foundation before we know what those strengths are,
- 4:10before we know what those goals are, before we know what those interests are.
- 4:16That is where I think I fall.
- 4:20That is where I think a lot of us fall.
- 4:23We go into this way of life.
- 4:25We pursue this way of life with the intent of making sure that our kids are
- 4:31just given the best that we can provide.
- 4:34And that is what this video today is all about.
- 4:38So I do I have to say, I do agree with some of the kerfuffle,
- 4:43some of the noise that's out there right now about homeschoolers.
- 4:45I think a lot of people are making videos
- 4:47about homeschoolers because it's controversial,
- 4:49and people come into the comments and they argue about it, and I just,
- 4:53you know, you know, and I know we know we're not those kinds of homeschoolers.
- 4:57We know we're doing a great job.
- 4:59We know we're working really hard.
- 5:01We know we have some accountability.
- 5:02We know that we are preparing our children
- 5:05for the world that they're going to enter.
- 5:06So because of that, I don't particularly take a lot of offense
- 5:10to those conversations surrounding homeschool
- 5:13right now, because those those aren't about me.
- 5:15I'm not that person.
- 5:16I know that I do what is required to set my kid up for success,
- 5:20and in doing so, we are tailor making our high school experience.
- 5:24So let's talk about that.
- 5:25Okay, so for not the first time, I'm
- 5:27going to talk to you about our high school experience.
- 5:29But now I have a bit more of a handle on what that's going to be.
- 5:33I have gone through the classes that we're going to need to take.
- 5:35I have gone through the things that we are using.
- 5:37I have gone through the ways that we're going to do it.
- 5:38I have gone through when we intend to transition to something else.
- 5:43But I think it is worth noting that I am building.
- 5:47We are building because, as you know,
- 5:49our homeschool is a collaborative experience, a program that is
- 5:55tailored, designed and intended
- 5:58to set my learner up for maximum success in the pursuit
- 6:03of the field that she already knows she wants to go into.
- 6:07So we're very lucky in that my child does
- 6:10know what she wants to do pursue going forward.
- 6:14So whether that is direct to some sort of
- 6:18of performance based situation, skipping college entirely,
- 6:21or whether that is through college, a path through college that does allow her
- 6:26to increase her skills and work on her performance and things like that.
- 6:30Then we are going to be prepared for that.
- 6:33We are also very fortunate, as you guys know.
- 6:35She considered briefly, very briefly attending a local magnet program.
- 6:42If you don't know what a magnet program is, a magnet program is.
- 6:46I don't know if they can be private, but I know that we have here in history
- 6:51some public school magnet, so we have some for
- 6:55you intend to pursue a career in medicine.
- 6:58You intend to pursue a career in engineering or science and technology.
- 7:02We have immersion programs, you know,
- 7:05Arabic immersion, Spanish immersion, Mandarin immersion.
- 7:08And we have these magnet programs, which is essentially
- 7:12an accelerated path
- 7:15in the pursuit of a specialized interest or goal,
- 7:19which for us would be performing and visual arts.
- 7:22And we have a school here that is exactly that.
- 7:27Now, I don't know that we have ever realized
- 7:32that this has been what we are doing, but now we are intentionally doing this.
- 7:36So if my daughter had chosen to go to the magnet school, half of her day
- 7:40would be academics and half of her day would be in pursuit of the performance.
- 7:45So things that in many schools are considered
- 7:48extras or electives are treated more weighted
- 7:52and more heavily, like core classes when you are in a magnet focused school.
- 7:57So things like dance, things like theater are actually given
- 8:02a greater significance through a magnet program.
- 8:05But they are also given a lot more time, energy and effort in a magnet program.
- 8:11So had she gone to a magnet school,
- 8:12her day would be half academics and then half of this magnet program.
- 8:16Now, just in the exact same way that she would have to audition
- 8:20and qualify and rank in on that performance ability.
- 8:25The academics associated with the magnet program, at least here
- 8:28in our experience, my understanding of the one
- 8:30that we would have chosen to pursue had we chosen to pursue it or at it.
- 8:36And so we are in a very unique position as homeschool parents,
- 8:41working very hard to tailor make this high school experience for her.
- 8:46We are doing the same thing.
- 8:48So we have this amazing blueprint that we are able to follow,
- 8:52this amazing framework that we are able to replicate at home.
- 8:56So we do spend half of our day in academics, and those academics
- 9:01are advanced because the expectation of these magnet programs,
- 9:05the expectation is that you excel in all avenues of what you are doing.
- 9:11And some of that may be theater
- 9:12and some of it may be dance, but some of it may be math.
- 9:15And so we are uniquely set up.
- 9:19I feel like, to mirror some of that framework because
- 9:23as you guys know, my ninth grader is taking algebra two, so she is ahead.
- 9:29She is advanced.
- 9:31So we are pursuing apps and advanced
- 9:35classes in an earlier dual credit path.
- 9:38Those things that would mirror
- 9:41the same kind of situation that she would be in,
- 9:44in that magnet school, at home, in this tailor made education,
- 9:49and then also pursuing advanced performance opportunities.
- 9:54So by setting up our school in this way,
- 9:58by building our high school around something that we can look to, it's
- 10:02a little
- 10:02bit of a guiding star in the sense of it gives us an idea of how to do this.
- 10:06It gives us a framework.
- 10:07And don't get me wrong, my next kid is nowhere near on the same path.
- 10:10But now I have an idea of how to pour in.
- 10:15I have an idea of how to source the things that will serve her.
- 10:20I have an idea of how this will work, even though her pursuits are different,
- 10:25even though her interests are different, even though her goals are different
- 10:29because we will be in the same way if she was an elite swimmer in the same way
- 10:34as if she was on an Olympic path for gymnastics,
- 10:38we will be giving her all of the tools along the way
- 10:42to stay ahead to ensure
- 10:46maximum success, to make sure that she is excelling
- 10:49both in her strength and natural talent, performance
- 10:53based direction, but also in her academic pursuits.
- 10:58Because both are important and both are valuable.
- 11:03So we will be holding her to a very high academic standard
- 11:06while ensuring that we can prove it,
- 11:11while ensuring that we can transcript it, and while ensuring
- 11:14that we are setting her up for the maximum path of success.
- 11:18So we will be making sure that we're checking those boxes,
- 11:21and we will be making sure that she is in the optimum place
- 11:26for whatever direction she chooses to go when it comes to college or not.
- 11:30College, that is fine, but it will not be because we didn't make sure
- 11:36that every single path, every single door was open for her.
- 11:40And I think there's a lot that can be said for this.
- 11:42It almost,
- 11:45almost is
- 11:47reminiscent or aligned with, I think, a lot of the principles
- 11:51of unschooling in that it is interest driven,
- 11:55it is deep dives into, you know, chosen pursuits.
- 12:00So in that way I think it's very similar.
- 12:03But also we are making sure that even the things yes,
- 12:08dance, sing, act elevated math.
- 12:12Okay.
- 12:12So we're going to make sure that these two things are going hand in hand.
- 12:15And this is not something that we have forced her into.
- 12:18This is not a path that she is.
- 12:19You know, we're kicking and screaming and dragging her unwillingly.
- 12:22We have just started early, before we knew
- 12:27this would be the direction we were going.
- 12:28So when we started homeschooling, we knew if we weren't ahead
- 12:33or at where we needed to be.
- 12:34Honestly, if she didn't stay ahead of where
- 12:38her kind of public school counterparts were, we knew we were losing ground.
- 12:42And that was a red flag situation.
- 12:44We have never found ourselves in that situation and so thankfully she is ahead.
- 12:49She is advanced and so we will be able to bank some of those dual credit credits
- 12:55while she's in her high school years and while she is in our home,
- 13:00we will be able to make sure that we are feeding both of the beasts.
- 13:04We are feeding academics well and advanced and expecting
- 13:09honestly a much higher output than you know.
- 13:13It would be equivalent grade level and we are making sure
- 13:16that we are pursuing at a high level those performance opportunities.
- 13:21So for her, this is what makes sense.
- 13:24This is what she wants to do.
- 13:26This is the path that we're going to take.
- 13:29But again, it is not less than it is not keeping her out of the world.
- 13:33It is not holding her back.
- 13:35What we are doing is tailor making an education that will best serve
- 13:42her both now, as she's doing the things she wants to do
- 13:45and later to achieve those goals, to get her where she wants to be.
- 13:49So I just want to
- 13:52share with you, maybe
- 13:54encourage you to think outside of the learning box.
- 13:59So like for us again, we've got this wonderful magnet
- 14:02program situation that we can mimic, that we can mirror,
- 14:06that we do know kids who go to, we know kids who have graduated from.
- 14:09We have a unique opportunity to fine tune our high school experience,
- 14:15to be that of something that is honestly more advanced.
- 14:19Now, the magnet program
- 14:20you have to audition to get in the magnet program is based
- 14:23on very advanced academics, even in the performing arts school.
- 14:27Okay, so you have to be all around a well-rounded kid to get into any of this,
- 14:30which honestly is going to mimic a lot of the things she wants to pursue.
- 14:34So you've got to be all around well-rounded performer.
- 14:36If you're going to make it anywhere on a stage, you've got to be an all around
- 14:40well-rounded student if you're going to make it into college.
- 14:43So what we are doing is mimicking
- 14:47some of the stuff that we see near us,
- 14:50remodeling our lives on that, but then also recognizing
- 14:54that similarities in her future pursuits and her future college paths.
- 14:58So we are going to do our best to continue fine tuning this system.
- 15:03Right now, I feel like we're set up great.
- 15:04We've got to half day of very advanced
- 15:06academics, a big block in the middle of the day, in the afternoon
- 15:10where we are just doing real life stuff, and then she has a lot of performance
- 15:13opportunities that do happen in the evening,
- 15:15because that's when, you know, everybody's out of school.
- 15:17So we are going to keep this up right now.
- 15:22It is.
- 15:22It is so refreshing to one to know that we set ourselves up
- 15:27to be here, uniquely prepared in this moment, to pursue things
- 15:31this way, even if we didn't know that that's what was going to happen.
- 15:35So there was never a performing arts on the table.
- 15:36And, you know, for the first eight years of school, that wasn't a thing.
- 15:41But as we got here, we did a good enough job
- 15:45laying those foundations early and making sure that academic academics
- 15:48were rigorous and making sure that we held ourselves to a standard of consistency.
- 15:53And we knew what kind of litmus point was so that we could be uniquely prepared.
- 16:00For now, I have absolute faith.
- 16:02Had she chosen to pursue an audition for that magnet program, she'd have made it.
- 16:06She'd have been great, but she didn't.
- 16:09She wanted to continue in this way of life.
- 16:12And for that, we will continue doing our part to make sure that she is
- 16:16wildly prepared for whatever comes next,
- 16:19even if that choice changes next year, and even if that choice never changes.
- 16:23And this is what we have to go show up and present to colleges across the nation
- 16:28to to prove what we've done and to explain how we've done it.
- 16:32Like I said, it is so refreshing to know that we do have that guiding light,
- 16:35a little bit of insight into that program so that we can
- 16:40tailor foster this educational path to make it make sense,
- 16:44but also to enforce that we're on the right track,
- 16:48that we're doing it well, that we're doing all right.
- 16:51So in that respect, think about that.
- 16:54Think about that.
- 16:54As your kids are even in for a second grade,
- 16:58what do you want to be able to give them later down the road?
- 17:02And you may, like many of our friends along the way, who's whose kids
- 17:05have chosen to go into brick and mortar schools.
- 17:08I know people personally,
- 17:10tons of people personally whose kids, you know, it was a pursuit of sports.
- 17:14And so it made sense to them to be in a public school setting.
- 17:17And those kids not only are performing very well in their sport,
- 17:22their top ten, they're ranked really well
- 17:25because they were prepared, they were set up.
- 17:30We are not the homeschoolers who are sitting back
- 17:32and letting the world happen to us behind closed doors.
- 17:36We are the homeschoolers who are making sure that we are attacking
- 17:40every opportunity and getting the maximum benefit out of everything that we can.
- 17:45And I know, I know our learners.
- 17:47I know our society is going to be better served for it because we are out here
- 17:52doing the work, we are out here
- 17:53putting in the effort, and we are making sure that our kids are
- 17:58better prepared, more successful, ready to tackle anything that comes their way.
- 18:03And things like magnet programs are in a wonderful situation
- 18:07and not telling you you should homeschool.
- 18:08I'm not telling you you shouldn't have school. Please don't. Don't do that.
- 18:11I just want you to know that it is possible
- 18:14to get ten years into this and then be like,
- 18:17oh wait, this is what I was working for, this is what I was preparing for.
- 18:22And we will be outsourcing as needed.
- 18:24We will be tapping in experts as needed.
- 18:26Absolutely.
- 18:27But what we're going to do
- 18:28is we're going to continue down this path and we're going to keep doing our best,
- 18:32and we're going to keep making sure that we are on track and aligned.
- 18:36And I just wanted to share with you that Taylor
- 18:40making this educational experience is
- 18:43wonderful is such an amount of freedom, because even
- 18:48just when it comes to daytime performances, she's available and can
- 18:53being able to know.
- 18:55And it's so interesting to me that, you know,
- 18:57there's all these arguments about how many hours
- 18:59and focus on reading and all the things, but when I'm
- 19:02looking at these magnet programs, these magnet programs are freedom.
- 19:06These magnet programs are interest based and interest driven and encouraged arts
- 19:12and all of the wonderful things that they tend to take out of every,
- 19:15every, you know, Joe Schmo neighborhood public school.
- 19:20We are able to provide them a path
- 19:24that is truly elite simply
- 19:28by narrowing down on their talents,
- 19:34their goals, their interests, and feeding into them.
- 19:38That you can, you can, you can jump, you can kick, you can dance, you can sing.
- 19:42That's great.
- 19:43But we're also going to set you up with
- 19:46math and science and history.
- 19:50You're going to be well-rounded.
- 19:51You're going to be ready to tackle anything that the world throws at you
- 19:54because you just you never know where they're going.
- 19:56They're going to be sent into a world that we can't even imagine.
- 19:59They're going to be in rooms that we will never enter,
- 20:02and we're going to make sure that they're prepared.
- 20:04We're going to make sure that they are set up, that they are ready,
- 20:06and they are willing to tackle whatever comes next.
- 20:10And one of the ways that we're going to do
- 20:11that is with amazing educational options.
- 20:14And again, I don't care where you get them
- 20:16homeschool, public school, magnet school, I don't care.
- 20:18We're going to be the people who invest in our kids because they deserve it.
- 20:22They are worth it.
- 20:23And we're going to keep working to make sure that
- 20:25whatever they want to do with their lives, we're here to back them up.
- 20:29We're here to make sure they're ready.
- 20:30We're here to make sure that they're prepared.
- 20:33One way that I can do that is through Taylor making this high school experience,
- 20:36and my job is to make sure that we are checking the boxes.
- 20:41My job is to make sure that we're diving deep where we can.
- 20:43My job is to make sure that they have the resources
- 20:45that they need, whether that's dual credit or a tutor or whatever.
- 20:48My job is just to get them there.
- 20:51Their job is to break down the door.
- 20:54Guys, I hope that you find any of this helpful, entertaining, or informative.

- 20:59on that bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 21:02As always, right on down in the comments or over an Instagram.
- 21:04You can find me.
- 21:05We can chat.
- 21:06Feel free to shoot me a DM if you have any questions at all, let me know.
- 21:09Let me know! Did you find this helpful?
- 21:11Do you have things like magnet programs in your area?
- 21:13Because I didn't recognize how rare that was,
- 21:15and how much I was going to have to explain what a magnet program is.
- 21:19Do you have things like language immersion schools?
- 21:21What do you have?
- 21:22We are in HisD, which is one of the biggest school
- 21:25districts in the nation, and I know that because of that and because of money
- 21:28and because Houston is actually the most diverse city in the nation,
- 21:32which I know is probably very shocking to most of you, but it really is.
- 21:35I know because of that, we have so many resources
- 21:38and things available to us based on proximity and location,
- 21:41which I really wish more of you had wonderful museums
- 21:44and performing arts and all of the wonderful things.
- 21:45So I I'm sorry.
- 21:47It's amazing to be here.
- 21:48It really is, you know, blue dot in a red world.
- 21:51But it is truly an amazing city.
- 21:53But let me know, what have you got? Have you heard of it?
- 21:56Have you not heard of it?
- 21:57Give me one unique learning situation to you.
- 22:00Or if you're looking for something, just be like boom!
- 22:03Broken bow, Oklahoma.
- 22:05Looking for performing arts, looking for whatever.
- 22:08Or boom, Miami, Florida.
- 22:11Turns out we have the best magnet program for engineering in the entire country.
- 22:14Let us know those things. Those things are really important.
- 22:16And yeah, let's stay together and let's help each other out
- 22:21and let's keep making everyday magic.
