- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the me Eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear. Listening to podcast,
- 0:18Speaker 1: you can't predict anything. Many people know Joannice as the
- 0:32Speaker 1: Labbyan Hunter, others known as the Labvian Eagle, the Labban
- 0:36Speaker 1: lover um. What people don't know is that Joannice wears
- 0:40Speaker 1: a special Latvian power ring. It's a somewhat lady like
- 0:48Speaker 1: braided silver ring and uh it's called a nams the ring.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Yannest paying absolutely no attention to what we're talking about
- 1:01Speaker 1: right now, just do my job. Here. Where's the special
- 1:06Speaker 1: Lavian decorative power ring on his right hand? Now his
- 1:14Speaker 1: father is here, and I would like his father also
- 1:17Speaker 1: named be honest, All Lavians are named, be honest. I
- 1:20Speaker 1: would like his father to explain to us all once
- 1:25Speaker 1: and for all, why uh why you fellas where Latvian
- 1:31Speaker 1: power rings? Okay, well, first, I'm not sure that where
- 1:37Speaker 1: the power of thing came from, because well because one
- 1:40Speaker 1: day I was making a joke like you know, you
- 1:42Speaker 1: know that genre of jokes that go like your ma, Yeah, okay,
- 1:46Speaker 1: I I got into those for a while and and
- 1:49Speaker 1: and I like to do it to Yanni because he's
- 1:51Speaker 1: the only guy knew that Cared got it. So if
- 1:54Speaker 1: you did a your ma if he's like, hey your ma, um,
- 1:58Speaker 1: he would actually act like you were talking about his mom. Yes,
- 2:01Speaker 1: And he said, the next time you do that, you're
- 2:03Speaker 1: gonna see a blinding flash of silver and as my,
- 2:08Speaker 1: as my namies makes contact with your face. So then
- 2:12Speaker 1: I started we started calling or I did, maybe the
- 2:15Speaker 1: Latvian power ring. So just we'll just call it anomies.
- 2:18Speaker 1: But I feel like if you said to Joe Blow
- 2:20Speaker 1: American that you had anamson, how are you talking about?
- 2:24Speaker 1: What if you said to them you're wearing a Lavian
- 2:26Speaker 1: power ring. I think that they start to get the picture.
- 2:30Speaker 1: It could be depends on where they're from. I don't
- 2:32Speaker 1: have the answer to that. So it's not a Latvian
- 2:35Speaker 1: power ring. It's just a ring. And now Mason, it
- 2:39Speaker 1: has a definite braiding to it. There's actually more than
- 2:42Speaker 1: one type, so you can get variations on them. It's
- 2:45Speaker 1: a it's a I think, a beautiful ring, and it's
- 2:49Speaker 1: something that Latvian men wear with a lot of pride.
- 2:52Speaker 1: But but you pointed out to me this week that
- 2:54Speaker 1: while hunting moose that you owned four, but stopped wearing anomies.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I have three and then and they're broken because I
- 3:02Speaker 1: got my finger caught in the wrong place. And they're better.
- 3:06Speaker 1: You know, some are better than others. So yeah, they
- 3:09Speaker 1: break somewhat easily. So tell us, tell us all the story.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I want to warrant it. This has absolutely nothing to
- 3:16Speaker 1: do with the normal things we talked about on this program.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Which story, the one where I got my finger caught?
- 3:22Speaker 1: Why uh, why Latvians wear as rings? How that? How
- 3:28Speaker 1: that tradition came to be? I have no idea. Well,
- 3:31Speaker 1: I know you telling me something I already know. Yeah,
- 3:36Speaker 1: you tell them. Maybe I don't know more than I
- 3:38Speaker 1: about it. I told you the other day, I told
- 3:42Speaker 1: you the story to check it with you. I don't recall.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I can tell this, I know it. You should, Okay,
- 3:50Speaker 1: you know as well as anybody. Okay. Now, Lab's a
- 3:55Speaker 1: small country in Europe. Once upon a time they had
- 3:58Speaker 1: a king named a mast I remember the story. Okay,
- 4:02Speaker 1: A bad guy, an enemy of the Lavian folk says, uh,
- 4:07Speaker 1: I'm gonna come kill that king. Nas gonna kill him.
- 4:12Speaker 1: And someone must have said to him, well, how are
- 4:14Speaker 1: you gonna know it's him? How are you gonna know
- 4:18Speaker 1: to kill the right Lavian kind? The customer story, Nam says,
- 4:23Speaker 1: or the enemy of Nami says, well, he wears this
- 4:27Speaker 1: special braided ring, so I'm gonna find him and kill him. Now,
- 4:34Speaker 1: the Lavians get winto this, and they can coct a
- 4:38Speaker 1: scheme by which all Lavan men will go out and
- 4:43Speaker 1: get themselves a ring just like king names. Then the
- 4:47Speaker 1: bad guys gonna show up, and he's gonna have to
- 4:49Speaker 1: either kill every single Lavian male or he'll be you know,
- 4:55Speaker 1: you there's a story like this is the Bible. You know,
- 4:57Speaker 1: it has to do with paint stuff on doors. But
- 5:01Speaker 1: uh so, now in case they're still out there looking
- 5:04Speaker 1: for him, it's it's you know, it's become tradition now
- 5:07Speaker 1: to wear the ring as an act of solidarity to
- 5:11Speaker 1: protect king. Though I'm guessing Lavina no longer has a king.
- 5:16Speaker 1: That that is true. Let me never had a king
- 5:20Speaker 1: as a democratic country, but it was a bunch of tribes,
- 5:24Speaker 1: so there were at some point there were king's hundreds
- 5:28Speaker 1: of years ago. So does that how much of that
- 5:30Speaker 1: story drives with the truth. Well, I mean, I think
- 5:34Speaker 1: it's a good story, so that it literally happened with
- 5:40Speaker 1: the legend. Yes, it would follow the legend. So so
- 5:45Speaker 1: why did I ask you to tell me the legendent?
- 5:47Speaker 1: You told me you didn't know that you didn't know
- 5:49Speaker 1: because I recall this story, I don't particularly no, I mean,
- 5:52Speaker 1: I'm sure there may be other legends that deal with
- 5:55Speaker 1: this particular ring, like Latvian's have a bride's ring too,
- 6:00Speaker 1: has seven bells from it and those and you can
- 6:03Speaker 1: get various you can get variations on what every one
- 6:07Speaker 1: of the bells means or how it's to be worn
- 6:09Speaker 1: and how it's to be given. So so it's spend
- 6:12Speaker 1: their own yard sort of similar thing. Um I used
- 6:18Speaker 1: to for a long time. I had a Jewish girlfriend
- 6:22Speaker 1: and we would go to this uh this place. It
- 6:26Speaker 1: was fun to go. And he was placed called the
- 6:27Speaker 1: Habad House, where like super hard hitting ultra Orthodox, and
- 6:33Speaker 1: their mission is to take their their mission. I don't
- 6:36Speaker 1: know if they've stayed it quite this way, but their
- 6:38Speaker 1: mission would be that you take moderate Jews or secular
- 6:41Speaker 1: Jews and and and bring them into the traditional old way,
- 6:45Speaker 1: to bring him into the hard line. Yeah. So but
- 6:47Speaker 1: we would go down because we like talking to these
- 6:49Speaker 1: guys and getting the inside scoop on deep Judaism, and uh,
- 6:54Speaker 1: we're talking about the various prohibitions cause I was asking
- 6:57Speaker 1: the this rabbi. I was like, is it ever possible
- 7:01Speaker 1: whatever you possibly have kosher wild game? Like, could you
- 7:04Speaker 1: have kosher wild game? He said, the only way you
- 7:06Speaker 1: could have kosh your wild game because we just we
- 7:09Speaker 1: always ate wild games. So realized we can't be kosher, right,
- 7:12Speaker 1: So uh, he said, here's what you have to do.
- 7:16Speaker 1: You have to catch it in the net and not
- 7:19Speaker 1: harm it, not injured it at all, captured in the net,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and then bring it in for for kosher slaughter. Right,
- 7:27Speaker 1: That's the only way to do it. Anyways, what I'm
- 7:29Speaker 1: getting at is a similar thing where you would say
- 7:31Speaker 1: to this guy. You know, people say like there's like
- 7:33Speaker 1: this prohibition. There's this Old Testament, Like the Jewish Bible
- 7:36Speaker 1: is the you know, the tour is the Old Testament.
- 7:39Speaker 1: So there's a story in the Old Testament where you
- 7:41Speaker 1: have all the dietary prohibitions and and that originates because
- 7:45Speaker 1: they didn't want people eat bad food. Right, No, nope, nope, nope, no,
- 7:48Speaker 1: that's my assumption. But I'm just saying when I'm when
- 7:51Speaker 1: I put that to that guy, I said, to this
- 7:53Speaker 1: this hobbad house guys like, yeah, but don't you think
- 7:58Speaker 1: that they didn't want you to eat pork because you
- 8:02Speaker 1: could catch parasites from undercooked pork, and so it's sort
- 8:06Speaker 1: of like a prohibition that kind of saves you from yourself, right.
- 8:12Speaker 1: He said, you don't know why God said don't eat pork.
- 8:17Speaker 1: God didn't say don't eat pork because I'm concerned about
- 8:20Speaker 1: tricking nosis. It's not your business to even understand why
- 8:24Speaker 1: God said don't eat pork. God said don't eat pork.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Don't eat pork. Don't rationalize this and guess my motives.
- 8:32Speaker 1: My motives are unknown to you. But that's a little
- 8:35Speaker 1: different than the ring. Just reminds me that, Okay, sure,
- 8:38Speaker 1: that's acceptable. I mean, the ring is basically to protect
- 8:42Speaker 1: one person's life, to make it so is now dead.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Oh for many centuries, so many people still wear the
- 8:53Speaker 1: ring though, Rip a cow, call ladies and gentlemen, Oh ladies, gentes.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Brody Henderson, you don't you don't think I can't figure
- 9:02Speaker 1: out we have so many fly fishing guides on this
- 9:05Speaker 1: damn show. I don't understand why they just trickle your
- 9:09Speaker 1: way in. It's a natural progression from big swing fly
- 9:14Speaker 1: fishing guy rip call. I'll give him my best. Uh god, Rick, Oh,
- 9:30Speaker 1: you don't want me to do it? No, what'll come
- 9:33Speaker 1: to we'll do Rick last. This will be the second
- 9:36Speaker 1: ever cal call of corps ever ripped. Ah. That's pretty good,
- 9:50Speaker 1: like Yannis, but the end of Yannis gets weirdly human.
- 10:05Speaker 1: That's also Ah, Man, mine's too high. I know it.
- 10:11Speaker 1: You want me, I'm gonna try. Okay, I'll point out
- 10:19Speaker 1: that this man called in the bull on the second day,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and I really do think it was. Now that right
- 10:31Speaker 1: there is the sound that right there is the sound
- 10:34Speaker 1: of a winning cow call, proven field tested on a
- 10:40Speaker 1: big bull. Thank you, yes, Rick oh Man, alright, I'll
- 10:44Speaker 1: do it. Oh that's good. Nice nice. I'm gonna rip
- 10:55Speaker 1: one out of my special horn. Uh where is my
- 10:57Speaker 1: special horn? Here's a factor, here's a factory produced rip. Oh,
- 11:07Speaker 1: brod you get my phone over the way, it's plugged in. Oh,
- 11:09Speaker 1: we're gonna do the little time show. Buck Bolding's master
- 11:14Speaker 1: show Buck Bodes master call. This this is here first.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I I gonna do Buck Boding ripping one. Let me
- 11:20Speaker 1: know if you guys can hear this good. This guy's
- 11:22Speaker 1: a guy hit in the lask outfitters. This guy's called
- 11:24Speaker 1: in the bazillion moose, including a seventy eight inch bowl.
- 11:29Speaker 1: One time that you called in twice. First time he
- 11:30Speaker 1: didn't want to shoot, Then he shot the second time. Um,
- 11:34Speaker 1: here's Buck Boding cranking a cow call. You'll hear me
- 11:39Speaker 1: say something. Are you guys getting over your head set?
- 11:56Speaker 1: Here's a factory produced cow call. So now I think
- 12:09Speaker 1: it's the end that does it, that separates it. What mean,
- 12:13Speaker 1: separates the men from the boys. Yeah, bulls from the no.
- 12:16Speaker 1: There's something about the guttural quality that fall off that's
- 12:20Speaker 1: either real or us blowing out our noses. And mine
- 12:25Speaker 1: is real bad, and I can hear it be real bad.
- 12:28Speaker 1: But I think the difference isn't that that last little section.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Everybody can kind of make that tone, but it's that
- 12:34Speaker 1: that like exhale of whatever their exert exertion. Ye. Well,
- 12:39Speaker 1: here's the problem with it is this. Raise your hand.
- 12:44Speaker 1: There's six mugs sitting here. Raise your hand, ye, raise
- 12:47Speaker 1: your hand for radio. If you have heard a cow
- 12:52Speaker 1: or cow moose calling the wild, I've heard him be pestered.
- 12:57Speaker 1: I've heard bulls growing the wild on at least two
- 13:02Speaker 1: occasions that I'm thinking of right now. I've never heard
- 13:04Speaker 1: of Kyle, but Bowden when I told him ripped me
- 13:08Speaker 1: a cow call, he ripped a cower call. I started
- 13:11Speaker 1: talking about this in that place I've learned. He says, well,
- 13:13Speaker 1: that's just what I've heard Coles do. And he's not
- 13:17Speaker 1: a he's not a bragg and Fellow. So yeah, I
- 13:24Speaker 1: don't think it's a very complex sound. I think it's
- 13:27Speaker 1: probably a sound that just really like you know, it's
- 13:32Speaker 1: a sound meant to carry. And my guess is that
- 13:34Speaker 1: a bull isn't sitting there hearing it and be like, yeah,
- 13:38Speaker 1: I'm buy it like educated Elkwood or an educated Turkey
- 13:44Speaker 1: who's seen it. Only because I think that in the
- 13:46Speaker 1: especially in the area we just came out of, I
- 13:48Speaker 1: don't think they hear a lot of calls. So we
- 13:52Speaker 1: just came out of area. We're seventy five miles seventy
- 13:55Speaker 1: five miles from a highway roughly central Alaska in the
- 14:00Speaker 1: Alaska Range, say five miles hond we just flew out
- 14:03Speaker 1: this morning. We've been out there, moosan um your honesty,
- 14:07Speaker 1: and you're tell him, tell explain your big bull and
- 14:10Speaker 1: what happened and all that, particularly the part about how
- 14:13Speaker 1: you conjured it. Oh, well, I just visually. I've been
- 14:18Speaker 1: visualizing this for a year, though it doesn't happen overnight. Oh, conjuring.
- 14:25Speaker 1: You started conjuring it a year ago. Well you can
- 14:28Speaker 1: call it what you like. What you called it, you
- 14:30Speaker 1: use the word manifesting. Manifesting visualizing that I was gonna
- 14:36Speaker 1: be when I knew that I was going on this
- 14:38Speaker 1: trip to hunt with my son and to hunt with you,
- 14:44Speaker 1: I just created this scenario where there would be this nice,
- 14:48Speaker 1: big bull to come in. And it did. But it's
- 14:53Speaker 1: more than that, because you told me where it would
- 14:55Speaker 1: come and how big it would be. Well, be honest
- 14:59Speaker 1: and in that wanted be true. Janice said that the
- 15:04Speaker 1: area where we are that somebody had killed the bull
- 15:08Speaker 1: before and it had literally come up the drainage. And
- 15:11Speaker 1: when I got there and saw the area, and I thought, well,
- 15:13Speaker 1: this is just like what you know I've been conjuring
- 15:17Speaker 1: or thinking as you that story that you created a
- 15:22Speaker 1: mental picture, mental picture. The only difference was that I
- 15:28Speaker 1: was above the bull, and in the picture I had
- 15:32Speaker 1: seen this bull coming in on flat land. But the
- 15:35Speaker 1: bull was actually coming out of the drainage, and he
- 15:38Speaker 1: literally I was not expecting this bull. So we were
- 15:44Speaker 1: walking down and to this second we were on a
- 15:48Speaker 1: higher bench. We had walked down to that first bench
- 15:51Speaker 1: where you could see a little bit more of the
- 15:53Speaker 1: base of the valley, but not entirely. And when we
- 15:58Speaker 1: kept moving around, and I can talk about cameraman right right, so, uh,
- 16:04Speaker 1: you know, Garrett's behind me, and we stop at one
- 16:06Speaker 1: point and start talking about the area and how nice
- 16:09Speaker 1: it looks and wouldn't it be nice? And then literally
- 16:14Speaker 1: as we stepped down to the lowest bench, the third bench,
- 16:18Speaker 1: we're there and Garrett is behind me. So minutes. Yeah,
- 16:22Speaker 1: I've been calling about every ten minutes, just what you heard.
- 16:26Speaker 1: And Garrett all of a sudden gives me one of
- 16:28Speaker 1: these taps on the shoulder and I go, ship man,
- 16:31Speaker 1: there's a ff and bull coming right. I mean, he
- 16:35Speaker 1: was probably well, he was closer when I first saw him,
- 16:39Speaker 1: because then he moved away on the drainage, So he
- 16:41Speaker 1: was probably seventy five when he first saw him and
- 16:44Speaker 1: moved out to about ninety when I shot him. So, uh,
- 16:47Speaker 1: but why were you surprised to see him? Because I
- 16:49Speaker 1: would feel that you would be like, well, here he is. Wait. Yes,
- 16:54Speaker 1: I made him correct, But like when my child was right,
- 17:01Speaker 1: that's right, I wasn't like you know. I mean I was,
- 17:03Speaker 1: but I knew that it was coming right. Well, but
- 17:06Speaker 1: it's just like when you have a good experience and
- 17:10Speaker 1: you go like, yeah, but I didn't think it was
- 17:12Speaker 1: going to be that good. So yes, when I saw
- 17:16Speaker 1: and you know, I'm only seeing the top of him,
- 17:19Speaker 1: barely seeing the hump and the antlers. And when I
- 17:24Speaker 1: dropped down, I mean he was doing the old mot
- 17:29Speaker 1: side to side swaying, and I mean he was hot.
- 17:32Speaker 1: He was looking for that cow that had made that sound.
- 17:37Speaker 1: The sound again, no, no, no, you're your cow call, Oh,
- 17:42Speaker 1: the real one, the one you use in the field.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Now again I may not be able to do it again,
- 17:48Speaker 1: approximation of the actual cow call you RiPP in the field.
- 17:56Speaker 1: You know that you're not trying for real face because
- 18:00Speaker 1: I know you're calling from the field, and I don't
- 18:02Speaker 1: why you won't treat the listen. I can't do it,
- 18:09Speaker 1: you sre my lips apart. Now I've been doing it
- 18:14Speaker 1: for you know, wind chap. Yeah, I said in the
- 18:18Speaker 1: picture too, because a mouse is at his shoulder as
- 18:22Speaker 1: tall as a person, yes, and ways like even if
- 18:25Speaker 1: you're a substantial size dude. He if you're a two
- 18:28Speaker 1: hud pound dude, he's still ways like six of you
- 18:30Speaker 1: laying there. Yes, that's what I'm saying. So the surprise
- 18:34Speaker 1: to see this animal and literally off to my right
- 18:38Speaker 1: below it, and then he disappeared because there's some brush
- 18:43Speaker 1: some of those uh a little dwarf birch or willows
- 18:47Speaker 1: that he's going through. Kind of picked the spot where
- 18:50Speaker 1: I knew he was coming through, dropped down to my knee,
- 18:53Speaker 1: you know, flipped up the scope covers, dropped one in
- 18:58Speaker 1: the chamber, made that defenders covers. Yes, I did defenders Yeah, yeah, right,
- 19:09Speaker 1: shooting that nice savage shooting. Uh some really great Federal
- 19:17Speaker 1: one eighties bear claws, Yeah, the little special tips on
- 19:23Speaker 1: him and bouched. Yeah. First shot, I mean I made
- 19:28Speaker 1: sure that Garrett was, you know, like you on this.
- 19:33Speaker 1: He acknowledged that he was. And the first shot at
- 19:36Speaker 1: just short of ninety yards right in the honeypot, and
- 19:42Speaker 1: you know, the bull kind of stopped. And they don't
- 19:45Speaker 1: do the statue of liberty like elk do or sometimes
- 19:48Speaker 1: there white tails you know what the kind of stand
- 19:51Speaker 1: up on your hind legs. But you could tell this
- 19:53Speaker 1: bull was hit and chambered another one and uh, hey,
- 20:00Speaker 1: he's still moving a little forward. We don't want to
- 20:03Speaker 1: chase this bull. We want to make sure he goes
- 20:06Speaker 1: down exactly where he is, So we put another one
- 20:09Speaker 1: and he was actually dropping down a little bit. So
- 20:11Speaker 1: that bullet came in. I'm sorry, he's going up more.
- 20:15Speaker 1: So it came in a little bit lower than what
- 20:17Speaker 1: I anticipated. But both both were killing shots and we
- 20:21Speaker 1: found the one bullet, so it was a perfect I
- 20:26Speaker 1: believe that was the first bullet. And then he ran
- 20:28Speaker 1: behind some spruce, got woozy and tipped right over. He
- 20:31Speaker 1: didn't run, he didn't go five yards. Yeah for the
- 20:35Speaker 1: second shot. Yeah, And I mean it was just textbook hunting,
- 20:42Speaker 1: kill everything. Yeah. The only thing the missing was Stephen
- 20:48Speaker 1: Ranella coaching me at that point, so I wouldn't have
- 20:50Speaker 1: nothing to say or did mess it up. Well, what
- 20:53Speaker 1: I thought was missing was the suffering, because it was
- 20:58Speaker 1: we had nine hunt days, ten hunt days, m and
- 21:02Speaker 1: the whole point of the whole trip to make me suffer,
- 21:06Speaker 1: to get your honest's day out of bull news. Okay,
- 21:08Speaker 1: So we did that successful. We had eight days left.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I just felt like it should have been like getting
- 21:15Speaker 1: dark on the last day and you're like crying. Who's
- 21:19Speaker 1: who's crying? Crying because like it didn't work out and
- 21:22Speaker 1: Austin's out of the bog man. Yeah, well, yeah, I
- 21:29Speaker 1: don't know about the crying part. That's probably you're never
- 21:32Speaker 1: going to see that. What did what did you think
- 21:34Speaker 1: about all that? Er dad got a bull so easily,
- 21:38Speaker 1: And what were you doing at the time while he
- 21:40Speaker 1: was getting this bull? Making coffee? Were you really at
- 21:44Speaker 1: the top of the hill because we're in a cold,
- 21:47Speaker 1: windy spot a couple of hours, I'm sure not like
- 21:51Speaker 1: the infamous wind tunnel you guys were sitting at. Our
- 21:54Speaker 1: calling station was called the wind tunnel. We didn't have
- 21:58Speaker 1: a tunnel. We're just like in a chamber. So you're
- 22:02Speaker 1: up there making some coffee. What how did you feel
- 22:04Speaker 1: when the old man starts blouching down there? Yeah, that's
- 22:06Speaker 1: what I was gonna say, Like my only I don't
- 22:08Speaker 1: call it a regret, but like, well, what could have
- 22:11Speaker 1: made it better for me? That would have been the
- 22:13Speaker 1: point of the trip if I would have been able
- 22:14Speaker 1: to see it. Yeah, earlier I summed up the whole
- 22:17Speaker 1: point of the trip. I missed a part. The whole
- 22:18Speaker 1: point of the trip was that your father was gonna
- 22:21Speaker 1: get a bull moose with you. Yeah, and then we
- 22:26Speaker 1: still kind of did Yeah, you're making coffee. He was close.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I mean he was hundred yards a hundred fifty yards
- 22:34Speaker 1: up the hill. So when when you heard boat boat,
- 22:37Speaker 1: what do you think? Bull down? Did you really? You
- 22:41Speaker 1: don't think he's getting malled by Chris. I'll tell you
- 22:45Speaker 1: something interesting. So we butchered the ball, which is no
- 22:48Speaker 1: small task, perfect weather for bull butchering. But um, we
- 22:53Speaker 1: butchered the ball. Was it the next day? I think
- 22:57Speaker 1: when the wolverine showed up the next day or two
- 23:01Speaker 1: days later? Maybe next day? Yeah, so we go to Yeah,
- 23:06Speaker 1: there's a glass and tip where you can look down
- 23:07Speaker 1: on where the no two days because we went caribou
- 23:10Speaker 1: hunting the next day and then the next day. Oh yeah,
- 23:14Speaker 1: I decidn't want to go hunt with you. A little
- 23:16Speaker 1: bit before I get to the Wolverene. How you double manifested? Yeah, yeah,
- 23:23Speaker 1: this is where I see. I'm a very skeptical person.
- 23:25Speaker 1: There's a famous quote that I often tell you, honest, Um,
- 23:29Speaker 1: Skepticism is the chastity of the mind. No, the chastity
- 23:35Speaker 1: of the intell intellect. Skepticism is the chastity of the intellect.
- 23:41Speaker 1: So fellow tells me he's gonna conjure up or he's
- 23:43Speaker 1: gonna manifest the bowl. I but my knee jerk reaction
- 23:49Speaker 1: is skepticism. That's interesting. But nevertheless, you're sitting on a chair.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Is somebody conjured? Yeah, then had to make it. Oh,
- 23:59Speaker 1: so what's the difference? What's the difference difference? If I
- 24:05Speaker 1: could tell you, it would take me while to think
- 24:07Speaker 1: of it, and I don't want the listeners to get
- 24:08Speaker 1: bored while I try to articulate, while I try to
- 24:11Speaker 1: conjure and then articulate. Why that's different? I can tell
- 24:16Speaker 1: you the difference is you don't believe that you can
- 24:17Speaker 1: do it, and you haven't worked on that skill set.
- 24:21Speaker 1: But you know what your skill sets are. You know,
- 24:23Speaker 1: conventional college education, a lot of honey education, right, and
- 24:28Speaker 1: you have a great deal of woodsmanship and knowledge. Nobody,
- 24:32Speaker 1: I mean you created all of that, right? How did
- 24:34Speaker 1: all that start? Where did that come from? You can
- 24:37Speaker 1: call it conjuring, you can call whatever you want. Man
- 24:41Speaker 1: of fact. It's the same thing. It's just that people
- 24:43Speaker 1: don't realize what and we do this every day, and
- 24:46Speaker 1: what happens is we get stuck in our environments of
- 24:49Speaker 1: maybe perhaps you have a parents that says it, well,
- 24:51Speaker 1: you can't do this, or hey, if you don't become
- 24:54Speaker 1: a doctor, you're no good. Right, So you decide to
- 24:57Speaker 1: be a woodsman and a writer, Well you're no good,
- 24:59Speaker 1: Steve right, and that we are, you know, kind of
- 25:03Speaker 1: kept in line in that way. I think that if
- 25:06Speaker 1: you understand that anybody has that capacity as a human
- 25:10Speaker 1: being and nothing special, I do see what you're saying
- 25:14Speaker 1: that I'm kind of I'm coming around the way you're thinking.
- 25:16Speaker 1: And I don't mean I don't want you to think
- 25:17Speaker 1: I'm trickeralizing the ships. I'm not. It doesn't matter to
- 25:20Speaker 1: me because I have lived my life this way. It
- 25:22Speaker 1: matters to you some amount, or you wouldn't have just
- 25:23Speaker 1: said you wouldn't have taken the energy to tell me
- 25:25Speaker 1: that energy. You can't take energy to tell me and
- 25:28Speaker 1: then say it doesn't matter. Well, of course it matters.
- 25:30Speaker 1: But because that's the way I lived my life, and
- 25:33Speaker 1: I'm agree, I'm starting to see a point what you're
- 25:35Speaker 1: saying because you said that you had a you had
- 25:37Speaker 1: an image how this would work. You got there, you
- 25:42Speaker 1: you had this thing, and what do you need to
- 25:43Speaker 1: do to make it work. It wasn't gonna work if
- 25:46Speaker 1: you say at your tent, that is correct. But in
- 25:49Speaker 1: order to make this work, I'm gonna call, I'm gonna
- 25:52Speaker 1: go look there, I'm gonna go look there, I'm gonna call.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna look there and look there. I'm gonna call
- 25:56Speaker 1: and gonna look there and look there. And they had
- 25:57Speaker 1: you needed to do it for ten days, for two days.
- 26:00Speaker 1: One day you were gonna Yeah, I understand. And and
- 26:04Speaker 1: I'm and I'm pointing out because it's a little bit
- 26:07Speaker 1: funny and also kind of interesting that that at the moment,
- 26:14Speaker 1: you didn't know that correct. I didn't know that your
- 26:16Speaker 1: bull was in root, but you had a bowling root.
- 26:19Speaker 1: And I was in the drainage. I was point six
- 26:22Speaker 1: miles away. I checked my jeeps, uh, because I took
- 26:27Speaker 1: a way point I found a bull. I have been
- 26:31Speaker 1: calling at a call station the wind tone and I
- 26:35Speaker 1: go there and there's a bull but thrashing brush hunter
- 26:37Speaker 1: yards from where we were calling, and took a gander
- 26:41Speaker 1: at him, kicked it around bull bed down. Couldn't find it,
- 26:45Speaker 1: bro what you found it? Came told me he found it.
- 26:49Speaker 1: We went over the head to look at it, and
- 26:50Speaker 1: I said, well, let's go grab Janice's dad and see
- 26:55Speaker 1: if he wants to put the moves on this bull.
- 26:59Speaker 1: No sooner do we just like I'm packing my bag
- 27:03Speaker 1: and we're even kicking around, like should we leave our
- 27:05Speaker 1: ship or grab our ship? I was taking way point
- 27:08Speaker 1: who right? So you had and it's not like we
- 27:15Speaker 1: had a ton of accounting. We saw some bulls, but
- 27:17Speaker 1: I mean they're close encounters. And you you you had
- 27:21Speaker 1: manifested bulls up two parallel draws or I'll take credit
- 27:27Speaker 1: for the one. But it was mysterious. Do you remember
- 27:31Speaker 1: the way you met you su tell you everything about it.
- 27:35Speaker 1: I'm sure there was a bit of manifesting in that. Okay, No,
- 27:43Speaker 1: I didn't know. I never manifested that I would like
- 27:47Speaker 1: have a different girlfriend and then go to a business
- 27:50Speaker 1: meeting in New York and meet a gal who grew
- 27:55Speaker 1: up like an hour and forty five minutes from where
- 27:57Speaker 1: I grew up. And it wasn't my mind. But you
- 28:00Speaker 1: know what I did say this, I had already known
- 28:03Speaker 1: her but after me and my girlfriend, my last girlfriend
- 28:06Speaker 1: broke up. I said, at the end of that relationship,
- 28:08Speaker 1: I said, from now on, I am only dating Michigan
- 28:11Speaker 1: girls ever. Smart man have a wonderful Yeah, and I'm
- 28:22Speaker 1: sure if you looked at it more in detail you
- 28:24Speaker 1: would find more than just per chance. Corey, what do
- 28:28Speaker 1: you think about all this? No? I love this stuff.
- 28:31Speaker 1: It's right up my alley, you know, visualization and something
- 28:35Speaker 1: occurs that becomes the truth. We weren't we talking just
- 28:40Speaker 1: on the last shoot about like the difference between imagination
- 28:44Speaker 1: and a great idea. No, I think Corey and I
- 28:48Speaker 1: were were Maybe you were not the last year I'm sorry,
- 28:51Speaker 1: two shots ago in Nevada. Maybe it was Joe and
- 28:53Speaker 1: I were talking about this. We're talking about how the
- 28:56Speaker 1: fact is is that like the same thing happens in
- 28:59Speaker 1: your rain. Sometimes it works out like immediately, or something
- 29:04Speaker 1: resolves and people go, damn, that was a great idea.
- 29:10Speaker 1: If if there is no resolve, people could just say, oh,
- 29:13Speaker 1: they're just kind of imagining things, So that's his imagination.
- 29:16Speaker 1: You can kind of write it off in that way.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Does that make sense? It doesn't. I feel like it's
- 29:23Speaker 1: the failures on my part. I just don't understand like
- 29:27Speaker 1: it's one of the same thing. It's just how it's perceived,
- 29:30Speaker 1: like your brain doing the same thing. So if you
- 29:33Speaker 1: see you're having like an an idea or something that
- 29:36Speaker 1: just happens in your brain, you okay, you're sitting there,
- 29:40Speaker 1: you have an idea, yeah, or I imagine something whatever
- 29:44Speaker 1: you want to call you that has like vanilla accents,
- 29:48Speaker 1: for instance, yes, okay, okay, and I go and make
- 29:53Speaker 1: it okay, and it just happens that accents is a
- 29:57Speaker 1: good thing. Doesn't sound good to me, but I come
- 30:00Speaker 1: back and you're like, damn, great idea oka, or you'd
- 30:05Speaker 1: be like, man, that guys just imagining things. When people
- 30:09Speaker 1: say it that way, just say you're imagining things, it
- 30:12Speaker 1: kind of puts it in this negative sort of connotation
- 30:15Speaker 1: where it's just like this wild, kind of like goofy
- 30:18Speaker 1: thing that really didn't make it much of anything. Where
- 30:22Speaker 1: when they say, man, great idea, all of a sudden,
- 30:25Speaker 1: it's like, put up on this pedestal. The same thing
- 30:29Speaker 1: happened I hear you're saying. But it's a difference because
- 30:34Speaker 1: you wouldn't say, like, let's say, I'm like, oh, world
- 30:36Speaker 1: peace right now? People say, imagine world peace. You can't
- 30:42Speaker 1: say I got an idea world peace, okay, because it's
- 30:49Speaker 1: exists at an imaginary level, because it's almost like a
- 30:52Speaker 1: hypothetical notion. That's it's kind of impossible. No one would
- 30:56Speaker 1: say imagine. You could say, like, imagine beer with nilla accents.
- 31:01Speaker 1: You could just be like, I'm gonna make beer with
- 31:03Speaker 1: vanilla accents. But you can't go and make world peace.
- 31:07Speaker 1: You have to imagine world peace, not world not world peas,
- 31:13Speaker 1: but world peace or world peas you can make. So
- 31:20Speaker 1: there is a big difference between an idea of something
- 31:24Speaker 1: and imagining something. Right. Well, this is the funny thing
- 31:29Speaker 1: people that this is introduced. I'm Rick Smith. Dangers like, yeah, okay,
- 31:44Speaker 1: tell you whatever happened last. But people with wildly unorthodox
- 31:50Speaker 1: views are often kind of put in the crackpot until
- 31:56Speaker 1: they actually do something that makes effects. Makes make some visionaries.
- 32:01Speaker 1: So most visionaries, once they have had their idea and
- 32:05Speaker 1: implemented it, you know, in retrospect, it's like, oh, that
- 32:09Speaker 1: guy was just like this budding genius. But at the
- 32:12Speaker 1: time when he was an actual budding genius, everybody thought
- 32:15Speaker 1: that guy is just a weirdo thinking about some idea
- 32:18Speaker 1: that nobody has thought about and imagining things. But some
- 32:23Speaker 1: of them were crackpots, like Hitler was a crack pot,
- 32:26Speaker 1: well or all, I mean crack pot. If you put
- 32:30Speaker 1: your idea into practice, might have some great effects, whether
- 32:34Speaker 1: they'd be negative or positive. If you had one, there'd
- 32:37Speaker 1: be a segment of the population they would talk about
- 32:41Speaker 1: him being like, you know, like true believers would say
- 32:43Speaker 1: that he was a visionary, right, you know. And you
- 32:45Speaker 1: know when Steve Jobs was cruising around, you know, at
- 32:48Speaker 1: Reed College attending classes for free, people were like, that
- 32:53Speaker 1: guy is a weirdo. He's not paying for class, he's
- 32:55Speaker 1: just sitting in. What is he doing with his life?
- 32:59Speaker 1: But once he was running a billion dollar empire, it's like, oh,
- 33:02Speaker 1: Steve Jobs the messiah freaking technology. I just read a
- 33:06Speaker 1: piece about the sculptor Michael Heiser, and he's one of
- 33:10Speaker 1: the earth movers, you know, the guys do like large
- 33:12Speaker 1: formation sculptures out on the earth and also welding steel
- 33:17Speaker 1: and making giant things that you can't put in new
- 33:19Speaker 1: museum now. And this piece is talking about like his
- 33:23Speaker 1: father was an archaeologist and he'd come from a ranch family,
- 33:27Speaker 1: and and it was talking about his father. He was
- 33:32Speaker 1: like a straight f student in a terrible funk up,
- 33:35Speaker 1: and his father later came to him and said, I'm sorry,
- 33:40Speaker 1: we just all thought you were a loser, but he
- 33:44Speaker 1: made it right. Yeah, I don't I don't think there's
- 33:49Speaker 1: any I don't know that the idea that you can
- 33:53Speaker 1: do well in school and that is predictive of your
- 33:55Speaker 1: future success is a correlation. Hardly bush. Yet there's hardly
- 34:04Speaker 1: a correlation between doing well. I guess we were so
- 34:09Speaker 1: we're just so badly. So we've cut this moose up. Now,
- 34:16Speaker 1: we cut this moose up, and the bat came on
- 34:21Speaker 1: a moose. We explained the weight because it's a little
- 34:24Speaker 1: bit complicated. Yeah, well, I think our pilot today, who's
- 34:31Speaker 1: handled many many moose, and we're asking about why they
- 34:34Speaker 1: have to be de bones, and he said he don't
- 34:37Speaker 1: really care about the bones themselves. It's the fact that
- 34:40Speaker 1: you get a rear ham that weighs somewhere between a
- 34:44Speaker 1: d and a hundred fifty pounds, and you have to
- 34:48Speaker 1: wield it in one big chunk. That's why you have
- 34:51Speaker 1: to debone it and then split it into two. They
- 34:53Speaker 1: like fifty pound chunks, So every ham is you know,
- 34:57Speaker 1: hy pounds and that was Yeah, this is cut off
- 35:01Speaker 1: at the ball skinned, cut off at the ball joint,
- 35:04Speaker 1: and cut off at the set at the what what
- 35:07Speaker 1: we consider the knee. And by the way, I want
- 35:10Speaker 1: to point out what a badass you are, Steve, because
- 35:13Speaker 1: you walked one of those suckers all the way back
- 35:17Speaker 1: up to camp damn in a backpack. Do you say
- 35:20Speaker 1: badass or dumbassad bad The dumbass words should go to
- 35:25Speaker 1: Korey and I for doing it without a backpack. We
- 35:28Speaker 1: take team to one of those just because, yeah, they
- 35:30Speaker 1: put it over their shoulder like they're carrying a piece
- 35:32Speaker 1: of log and you're kind of doing like a Chinese
- 35:35Speaker 1: dragon thing, you know, with sticking out of the bottom. Yeah,
- 35:42Speaker 1: you're just not Like, the size of these things is
- 35:44Speaker 1: hard to get across. So if you took the front,
- 35:46Speaker 1: like a moose's highest the highest spot on the moose
- 35:48Speaker 1: is the you know, the shoulders, it's not actually the shoulders,
- 35:51Speaker 1: but it's backbone. Has that thing there. When you cut
- 35:54Speaker 1: the front leg off, then cut it off at the knee,
- 35:56Speaker 1: that's some bitch comes up to your clavicles. You set
- 36:00Speaker 1: it on the ground, It's like, yeah, huge big piece
- 36:04Speaker 1: of meat anyway, yanaka continue the story. No, well, obviously,
- 36:10Speaker 1: because we wait on one tip at our scale, at max,
- 36:12Speaker 1: our hunter pound hunter sex. So cut this mooz all up,
- 36:18Speaker 1: and uh, you can't. You're flying in the places were
- 36:23Speaker 1: flying when you're flying it on something called supercup, and
- 36:25Speaker 1: a super cup has the capacity to carry uh just
- 36:31Speaker 1: hundred four h pounds three fifties what they want on max. Yeah,
- 36:35Speaker 1: but they'll carry four the way some air carriers. The
- 36:38Speaker 1: way some air carriers will do it is they'll just
- 36:40Speaker 1: take your body weight. So they'll say that you can
- 36:42Speaker 1: put a grown person in there. Just has to do
- 36:44Speaker 1: with weight distribution. You put a grown person in there
- 36:47Speaker 1: and his clothes and whatever he's got on him, and
- 36:49Speaker 1: then fifty additional pounds. So if you're going on a
- 36:52Speaker 1: on a sheep hunt in a super cubs on dolls
- 36:55Speaker 1: sheep and land in the mountains, you might have it
- 36:58Speaker 1: dictated you by your bush pilot, your transporter that you
- 37:03Speaker 1: can only have fifty pounds of you can only have
- 37:06Speaker 1: a fifty pound backpack that's gonna want to put into
- 37:08Speaker 1: a super cup now when you're flying. So when you're
- 37:12Speaker 1: flying a moose quarter so the moose quarterways a hundred
- 37:14Speaker 1: thirty pounds. Obviously the plane has the capacity to do it,
- 37:16Speaker 1: but you gotta get it in a little tight spot.
- 37:19Speaker 1: So they don't like the flyout bone meat. They they
- 37:22Speaker 1: stipulate that you, um sorry, they don't like to fly
- 37:26Speaker 1: out bone in meat. And this air carried that we
- 37:29Speaker 1: were flying with makes you bone out your moose meat
- 37:32Speaker 1: and have bags that weighed no more than fifty pounds
- 37:35Speaker 1: per bag, and we had probably about it. No I
- 37:42Speaker 1: think you counted a sixteen or seven Okay, yeah, because
- 37:46Speaker 1: we had to separated more. Okay, the pounds. The pilot said,
- 37:48Speaker 1: five pounds is what they're flying out from. So five
- 37:52Speaker 1: h pounds of bone was meat. We want not taking
- 37:55Speaker 1: some of the marrow bones out on a later flight. Now,
- 37:58Speaker 1: the pilot one of the piles to tell me a
- 38:00Speaker 1: couple of interesting things. He uh, his wife cooks uh
- 38:09Speaker 1: when he killed the moose. He knew his wife His
- 38:11Speaker 1: wife uh was brought up in in in Native Alaskan culture,
- 38:16Speaker 1: and they she uses all the merrow when he kills moose.
- 38:21Speaker 1: He has to bring all the marrow bones home because
- 38:23Speaker 1: she wants the merrow. He brings the nose home and
- 38:27Speaker 1: they take the whole nose of the moose, burn the
- 38:30Speaker 1: hair off with a blowtorch, boil it until it gets soft,
- 38:34Speaker 1: cut it in slices, and just put salt on it
- 38:36Speaker 1: and eat it. And he knew that she liked the stomach,
- 38:40Speaker 1: but they do cut the carsage out of the nose.
- 38:43Speaker 1: That's what he's saying. He knew that she likes the stomach,
- 38:47Speaker 1: so he went and took the stomach and washed it
- 38:51Speaker 1: all out in the creek and brought the stomach home.
- 38:53Speaker 1: And she was pissed because you don't want to wash
- 38:56Speaker 1: it too well because all the stomach you washed away,
- 38:59Speaker 1: all the stomach acids and things in those stomach acids
- 39:03Speaker 1: are what lends it like the right texture and taste. Interesting, Yeah,
- 39:08Speaker 1: I heard. I learned that this morning. So to cut
- 39:14Speaker 1: this moose up, and lo and behold, two days go by,
- 39:18Speaker 1: and uh we go over there, and uh shiploads of
- 39:21Speaker 1: ravens hanging around, and we're looking at the wolverine scavenging
- 39:25Speaker 1: the carcass. The wolverine has a hoof, a hoof from
- 39:34Speaker 1: the knee down, which is a substantial chunk of thing,
- 39:37Speaker 1: and he's dragging it and he's getting dive bombed by
- 39:40Speaker 1: ravens and then Uh would stop what he was doing
- 39:46Speaker 1: now and then to kind of like hiss at and
- 39:48Speaker 1: and kind of challenge the ravens and then drug his
- 39:51Speaker 1: hoof over the hill. We started making plans to uh
- 39:56Speaker 1: get the wolverine and put a tag on him. And
- 40:00Speaker 1: the wolverine never turned up again. But we had hiked
- 40:02Speaker 1: this meat up, bone in meat up to the airstrip
- 40:07Speaker 1: and boned it there. And over the course of the night,
- 40:09Speaker 1: the moose dragged off two hold back boned out legs.
- 40:14Speaker 1: What did I say, No, he didn't do it was
- 40:18Speaker 1: the wolverine and dragged all that stuff off, going to
- 40:21Speaker 1: cash it somewhere. When we were fixing to kill the wolverine,
- 40:25Speaker 1: Rick got sensitive. We realized that Rick has a do
- 40:34Speaker 1: not He has a special animal list in his mind.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Can you speak to this? Yeah, I mean, I mean
- 40:44Speaker 1: are on the list? They're on there on there, especially
- 40:47Speaker 1: they're carrying a baby on their back. I mean, why
- 40:52Speaker 1: is the wolverine? I understand. I was want you to
- 40:55Speaker 1: tell me why. I mean, for me, the idea of
- 40:58Speaker 1: eating wolverine, why, how possible? Does not seem practical? Um?
- 41:04Speaker 1: I mean a lot of death for a little meat. Yeah,
- 41:06Speaker 1: a lot of death for a little meat. And it's
- 41:09Speaker 1: a symbol of wildness in a way that very few
- 41:14Speaker 1: critters are. I mean, they just their ranges are pretty large.
- 41:18Speaker 1: But I understand why you would want to kill a wolverine.
- 41:22Speaker 1: They have the coolest freaking but range is as big
- 41:26Speaker 1: as a cariboo. That's true, Okay, So why was it? Okay?
- 41:31Speaker 1: Why is the density? Well, yeah, I mean it's not ranged.
- 41:35Speaker 1: Don't tell me it's range because it's not range. Yeah,
- 41:38Speaker 1: but he's the only he's the only one in his range.
- 41:41Speaker 1: There might be a couple, but the terms of the
- 41:44Speaker 1: terms of density and abundance where they are in the
- 41:46Speaker 1: trophic scale, there's there's this freaking glacial weasel. I mean,
- 41:53Speaker 1: they evolved to deal with super cool there and just
- 41:56Speaker 1: like the cariboo, I like the caribou too, but I like,
- 41:59Speaker 1: I think I would like eating the caribooe better than
- 42:01Speaker 1: the wolverine. So in a way, it has to do
- 42:05Speaker 1: with and I know because I have things that I
- 42:07Speaker 1: don't like to things that I've eaten that I wouldn't
- 42:11Speaker 1: want to go get myself. Okay, But but when you
- 42:15Speaker 1: look at it at a at a wolverine. Yeah, it's
- 42:20Speaker 1: that um. Is it fair to say that you value
- 42:25Speaker 1: him more alive than dead? Yeah? I mean I see
- 42:28Speaker 1: him kind of like us, Like he's cruising around looking
- 42:32Speaker 1: for his meal in a way that we are, and
- 42:35Speaker 1: I put him on our level in a way that
- 42:38Speaker 1: I don't put the caribou or the moose. That makes sense. Okay,
- 42:41Speaker 1: would you put a pine Martin? I like part of
- 42:45Speaker 1: pine Martins as much as a wolverine. They're pretty badass. Yeah.
- 42:50Speaker 1: A monkey? Yeah, monkey more or less. If we had
- 42:56Speaker 1: a monkey and a wolverine standing there and I said,
- 42:59Speaker 1: rick on one of them, what kind of what kind
- 43:01Speaker 1: of monkey? Ranging? No tailed monkey? Like a capuchin, white
- 43:09Speaker 1: white face capuchin. Yeah, they're they're relatively abundant. Red howler
- 43:14Speaker 1: mean little fucker's capuchins in a red howler. That's the
- 43:22Speaker 1: kind of iet the howler. How was it? Yeah? I
- 43:27Speaker 1: said a thousand tas. It tastes like if you took
- 43:29Speaker 1: a steel cable and put liquid smoke on it. Oh yeah,
- 43:33Speaker 1: that bad. I just like a dry I mean they
- 43:37Speaker 1: smoked the jeeps on thing. What do you think it
- 43:40Speaker 1: tastes like? I don't know, I'm eating blue smoke, turkey,
- 43:46Speaker 1: drop stick. I mean, I'm eating blue guy, which I
- 43:47Speaker 1: think is worse than the in a old ring in
- 43:49Speaker 1: some ways. So if I had a red holler monkey,
- 43:52Speaker 1: a bluega whale, and a wolverine, I said, Rick, I'm
- 43:55Speaker 1: killing one of them and you're eating it. Man, you
- 43:58Speaker 1: would tell me to shoot the ah the I think
- 44:03Speaker 1: that the one I like the lease is the howler. Okay, whale,
- 44:09Speaker 1: but that's the whale. A wolverine and a monkey, Yeah,
- 44:13Speaker 1: you would say shoot the monk. That's a great game.
- 44:16Speaker 1: I feel like I feel like the listeners need to
- 44:18Speaker 1: chime in and send in their their answer. The wolverine, Yeah,
- 44:27Speaker 1: a whale, a monkey, I know, and that's probably that's
- 44:32Speaker 1: a good answer. I think that's a good answer. I mean,
- 44:35Speaker 1: the coolest thing about wolverine is I mean, they're freakingly
- 44:41Speaker 1: he warmed up to the idea. No, no, we definitely
- 44:46Speaker 1: did not. And I understand this is a like a
- 44:48Speaker 1: human like when I the new iPhone comes out, I
- 44:51Speaker 1: want one. That's how I feel about wolverine, hight Like,
- 44:55Speaker 1: I just kind of want it, like in a I
- 44:59Speaker 1: want to take the session of it. And I think
- 45:02Speaker 1: that desire is problematic a little bit. Yeah, it's like
- 45:06Speaker 1: it's part of like consuming culture kind of thing, like
- 45:10Speaker 1: I want to I want to have it. I want
- 45:11Speaker 1: to put it on my jacket because they're cool. It's cool. Yeah, yeah,
- 45:17Speaker 1: you know, but even if you lived, like if you're
- 45:20Speaker 1: the last person alive on Earth. Okay, so your last
- 45:25Speaker 1: person alive on the planet. And when I put this out,
- 45:28Speaker 1: I'm just saying, there is no there's no more checking
- 45:32Speaker 1: things against your peers. There's no more any sort of judgment,
- 45:35Speaker 1: like judgment is gone. There is no judgment left on
- 45:38Speaker 1: the planet. So your own judgment of yourself, right. I
- 45:42Speaker 1: feel in that situation, you would kill the wolverine right
- 45:47Speaker 1: off the bat because I want it. Yeah, because you
- 45:50Speaker 1: didn't want to kill the wolverine. I think because it
- 45:52Speaker 1: had something to do with your perceived the perceived judgment
- 45:58Speaker 1: I'm there is. Yeah, I think that's probably the last
- 46:01Speaker 1: man on Earth would want that thing. He'd be like,
- 46:05Speaker 1: she looks warm. Yeah, there's something desirable about it, for sure,
- 46:09Speaker 1: but I don't need it. I got some oil based
- 46:12Speaker 1: material that does pretty good, and and those porty geese
- 46:16Speaker 1: provide amazing Yeah. I'm not trying to I'm not trying
- 46:19Speaker 1: to put holes with thin because it's my feeling about it.
- 46:21Speaker 1: I don't want to kill the wolverine because I have
- 46:24Speaker 1: said for many years that there's one animal, like outside
- 46:27Speaker 1: of a polar bear, there's one sort of animal in
- 46:30Speaker 1: the you know, the large North American critters, land critters
- 46:35Speaker 1: that I hadn't laid eyes on. And it was him,
- 46:38Speaker 1: and there I wasn't there he was and I got
- 46:40Speaker 1: to see him, and I said, yes, I don't want
- 46:43Speaker 1: to shoot the first wolverine I ever saw. I didn't
- 46:46Speaker 1: want to shoot the first links I ever saw. Yeah,
- 46:49Speaker 1: I think that's a good because it's like, but I'm like,
- 46:51Speaker 1: how about it another one popped over the hill, just
- 46:52Speaker 1: like I would feel different about the second one because
- 46:55Speaker 1: I felt like I didn't have a personal the personal
- 46:58Speaker 1: level of context with where I didn't have that predatory feel.
- 47:04Speaker 1: I was like, wow, and I know that the best
- 47:07Speaker 1: material for trimming out a parka wolverine's wolverine. Damn straight
- 47:11Speaker 1: frost and stuff. It doesn't frost up, doesn't frosty. So
- 47:16Speaker 1: if you saw that wolverine the next day you went
- 47:18Speaker 1: to went after it because it was still would have
- 47:22Speaker 1: been the same one I would have rather someone else
- 47:25Speaker 1: went after it. Yeah, you know, and I'll point out
- 47:29Speaker 1: to listeners, Um, if you're a non resident honey in Alaska,
- 47:34Speaker 1: it depends what unit you're in. The unit we were in. Um,
- 47:39Speaker 1: you're allowed one wolverine per season, so we're not going
- 47:43Speaker 1: out on a limb here without ten. And this unit
- 47:46Speaker 1: we're in your allowed ten wolves, one wolverine, one wolverine proceed,
- 47:52Speaker 1: So we're not talking about something. Yeah, this is like
- 47:55Speaker 1: by the books sort of sort of thing. September September one,
- 47:59Speaker 1: if you want it. If you did want to kill
- 48:01Speaker 1: that wolverine, I would have been like, sweet, yeah, give me,
- 48:04Speaker 1: give me part of it. But yeah, most folks without
- 48:08Speaker 1: a little bit of education would probably think that the wolverines, well,
- 48:13Speaker 1: I guess they are. It's kind of similar situations the
- 48:16Speaker 1: grizzly bear, Like in a lower forty eight, there's not
- 48:18Speaker 1: a lot of them. They're also like you often hear
- 48:24Speaker 1: the term symbol of or icon of, and the wolverine
- 48:28Speaker 1: is one of those iconic wilderness northern animals. Yea, yeah,
- 48:35Speaker 1: university mission. Well, some people say wolver the wolverine may
- 48:38Speaker 1: have never stepped foot in Michigan. Do you know that
- 48:40Speaker 1: they just spotted one a couple of year or two ago.
- 48:42Speaker 1: I think that's the thing about the Lower forty versus Alaska, right,
- 48:49Speaker 1: lower forty eight, we have all these like well, like
- 48:53Speaker 1: preserving wilderness, and Alaska just is and wilderness. It just
- 48:57Speaker 1: is wilderness. You don't have to even think about it.
- 49:00Speaker 1: There's a much susy bears occupy like nine of the range,
- 49:03Speaker 1: wolves occupy nineties percent of the exactly functioning, much different
- 49:07Speaker 1: view of grizzlies in the Lower forty eight than they
- 49:09Speaker 1: do up here, like very differently. And you can kill
- 49:12Speaker 1: a bunch of wolverines, you can kill wolves, you can
- 49:14Speaker 1: kill grizzly bears in Alaska and there's not any global
- 49:18Speaker 1: effect to their populations. And they view the wolf the nuisance.
- 49:24Speaker 1: That's what. Yeah, in some areas to some degree, in
- 49:27Speaker 1: the area we were hunting in, Um, they get after
- 49:32Speaker 1: wolves pretty hard because they're trying to they're trying to
- 49:36Speaker 1: assist a beleaguered herd of caribou in the area, So
- 49:40Speaker 1: they tend to get after wolves pretty hard in that area, right, Um,
- 49:46Speaker 1: And your thoughts on this wolverine thing, that's cool to see. Yeah,
- 49:50Speaker 1: I liked it. I mean it's pretty rare to to
- 49:53Speaker 1: be able to see a wolverine in person. One of
- 49:57Speaker 1: our pilots today, forty four years in a Alaska I'm
- 50:01Speaker 1: guessing probably twenty or more of them flying. Never seen one. No, yeah, yeah,
- 50:11Speaker 1: we all expect grizzlies to show up in camp. There
- 50:14Speaker 1: was grizzly ship everywhere and then boom, a wolverine shows
- 50:17Speaker 1: it up right next to camp. So that was pretty cool.
- 50:20Speaker 1: You know, one thing I want to make a little
- 50:22Speaker 1: remark about which some hunter I've done a lot of
- 50:26Speaker 1: hunting out West are significantly more than most Midwest hunters.
- 50:31Speaker 1: And on occasion out West, you know, you'll be walking
- 50:34Speaker 1: a big field or a meadow and you'll come up
- 50:36Speaker 1: on grizzly bear, well not grizzly bear, but just black
- 50:39Speaker 1: bear ship. Here. When you're walking these meadows, every third
- 50:44Speaker 1: step there's a bear turd and some of them like Brody,
- 50:49Speaker 1: that one big pile, big boy, This is no kidding,
- 50:56Speaker 1: I've got a normal sized fist. This ejection came out
- 51:01Speaker 1: of the bear was bigger than my bigger gauge bigger
- 51:05Speaker 1: gauge friend Bearer Biologist Carl Malcolm said that there is
- 51:09Speaker 1: a correlation and they use it in research as a
- 51:13Speaker 1: correlation between the gauge on a bear ship in the
- 51:17Speaker 1: size of the bear man. I would believe it. I mean,
- 51:20Speaker 1: and but you're seeing a lot of You have to
- 51:22Speaker 1: understand like you're seeing a ton of bearship where you
- 51:24Speaker 1: are because you're in the spot. You're in the barry
- 51:26Speaker 1: zone right and get above the alder and dwarf birds
- 51:30Speaker 1: and they're the alpine. But there's still a lot of
- 51:32Speaker 1: good groundcover before you get into the bear rock and
- 51:35Speaker 1: there's like a there's a band of exceptional barry growth.
- 51:41Speaker 1: You happen to be also, you know when you're honey
- 51:43Speaker 1: has been a lot of time in that band because
- 51:45Speaker 1: it's got a good visibility, easy traveling. So you're in
- 51:48Speaker 1: there where the bears are, and there's just a lot
- 51:51Speaker 1: of bear ship there. So it's like that little boy
- 51:54Speaker 1: digging for that pony on that piloo. I don't know,
- 51:58Speaker 1: but it's an old story, like you know, my dad
- 52:01Speaker 1: always told this story. Yeah no, I haven't heard this.
- 52:04Speaker 1: So my dad said, you said there's two kinds of people. Okay, now,
- 52:11Speaker 1: well no, my dad put like this. He put it
- 52:13Speaker 1: as a he put a socio economic spin on it.
- 52:17Speaker 1: He said, you take a rich kid and put him
- 52:20Speaker 1: in a room full of horse ship, he's just gonna cry.
- 52:24Speaker 1: You take a poor kid and put him from room
- 52:25Speaker 1: full of horse ship, and you're open up. He's gonna
- 52:28Speaker 1: be digging because you'd be like, with all this horse ship,
- 52:30Speaker 1: it's gonna be a pony in here somewhere, right. Yeah,
- 52:34Speaker 1: So that's the same theory that I'm applying to the
- 52:38Speaker 1: bear ship. He's there somewhere. Yeah, it's got to be somewhere.
- 52:43Speaker 1: Do you guys have never heard dad? I was quite
- 52:47Speaker 1: happy to see four bears two miles away. That was
- 52:50Speaker 1: funny that grizzually mama with the three cubs. We saw
- 52:54Speaker 1: a sour two and the sou with three, right, And
- 52:57Speaker 1: that the blonde ship was awesome. She was as almost
- 53:02Speaker 1: white all right, yunhy, just without looking like a polar bear.
- 53:09Speaker 1: Tell us your whole caribou story, I mean, write down
- 53:12Speaker 1: to the everything. How we got there and they were
- 53:16Speaker 1: all over the place, dicking around. We're looking for we're
- 53:21Speaker 1: the monster across the way. Rick, What do you do?
- 53:23Speaker 1: What's important on your phone? There? Nothing? Girl? I figured
- 53:29Speaker 1: he was just researching the string. I'm single. These days.
- 53:33Speaker 1: You know he is there anything we can do to
- 53:35Speaker 1: help you out there? He've asked for it. You want
- 53:40Speaker 1: me to put it a plug for you on this podcast,
- 53:42Speaker 1: like a little website or definitely not people visit you
- 53:46Speaker 1: on maybe maybe maybe, I'll just say this the right
- 53:50Speaker 1: type of girls guy to find because of his last name. Yeah,
- 53:55Speaker 1: you had an Instagram account that we can rix Rick
- 53:58Speaker 1: Smith Media. Yeah, so go they try to find Rick
- 54:01Speaker 1: Smith on Facebook when it was I mean name Rick
- 54:08Speaker 1: Smith and bow. Let me just put it out there.
- 54:10Speaker 1: How old are you? Gain fully employed freelance lifestyle works
- 54:18Speaker 1: on interesting projects. Rick recently has discussed on a previous podcast.
- 54:22Speaker 1: Rick will sometimes go into a will get a shot
- 54:25Speaker 1: list and go out and to subserve wild animals and
- 54:28Speaker 1: film behaviors. That's interesting dinner conversation, right, that's not lacking. Um,
- 54:35Speaker 1: very bright guy, well educated. You doing a house? Rick
- 54:38Speaker 1: does no one house? But he right some day, very
- 54:44Speaker 1: gross survivor show. I was a reality TV, reality TV star,
- 54:49Speaker 1: reality TV made it survived and uh and is not married.
- 54:58Speaker 1: Still major commitments. So there you have it, ladies. Rick
- 55:01Speaker 1: Smith bosmantin. I'll let you know in the next podcast
- 55:04Speaker 1: what comes to fruition out of this. You've got a
- 55:06Speaker 1: lot of female listeners of this podcast. But what I
- 55:10Speaker 1: pictures are some dude listening and is with his wife
- 55:13Speaker 1: and she's like over hearing. Oh yeah, his wife, but
- 55:20Speaker 1: his sister is over hearing. Yea or like his cousin.
- 55:24Speaker 1: That could work though, because his wife could be like, oh,
- 55:28Speaker 1: we should set him up with my friend. We should
- 55:32Speaker 1: call dep and tell her to call this guy. Is
- 55:36Speaker 1: can a gal go like move in with you? Or
- 55:39Speaker 1: do you want a gal who's already in that town
- 55:41Speaker 1: with her own place? Um, my current place would be
- 55:44Speaker 1: a little tight. So what radius are you looking at here?
- 55:49Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't have four corners too far.
- 55:51Speaker 1: I have a lot of restrictions. I mean, I don't know.
- 55:57Speaker 1: I think with right gal, Rick would import from Palm Beach,
- 56:01Speaker 1: New York. If you're from like beaute. What are you
- 56:04Speaker 1: looking for, Rick? Oh wow? Yeah, No, I don't put
- 56:08Speaker 1: a lot of I don't put a lot of stock in.
- 56:11Speaker 1: He told me that I'm not a judgure, he has
- 56:15Speaker 1: no opinion about promiscuity. That was an example of a
- 56:22Speaker 1: profile questions that I had to take reality shows giving
- 56:25Speaker 1: me a lesson and I saw neutral a lesson about
- 56:29Speaker 1: how to pass the psycho logical profile test. Now that's
- 56:32Speaker 1: what you claim neutrality on things. I claimed neutrality on
- 56:36Speaker 1: that one. Uh yeah, so good, guys. I just want
- 56:41Speaker 1: to help you out there. That's good that you got
- 56:43Speaker 1: some you got some followers out there and the podcast.
- 56:46Speaker 1: Oh man, yeah they're dude, they have cousins, sisters. So yeah,
- 56:52Speaker 1: I need tell your care Why don't we start talking
- 56:55Speaker 1: about rix life. I don't know, because I mentioned the
- 56:58Speaker 1: fact that he was on a reality show. It was
- 57:03Speaker 1: we were about to get the play by play of
- 57:04Speaker 1: this freaking yeah. Then somehow concerned about your love life.
- 57:09Speaker 1: Oh I was on my phone. Oh you were messing around.
- 57:11Speaker 1: I thought you're on one of those dating websites. No, no,
- 57:13Speaker 1: I'm just texting because trying to make the most of
- 57:18Speaker 1: my time here in the last time. But it makes
- 57:20Speaker 1: me really uncomfortable. Man, it makes me feel like you're
- 57:22Speaker 1: not engaged. That's that's a good point. Yeah, that's true.
- 57:26Speaker 1: It's really hurting my feelings. All right. Yeah, I need
- 57:28Speaker 1: to tell tell the cab story Rix Rix dying to
- 57:30Speaker 1: hear it, Rix's attentive look at them over here. Now,
- 57:33Speaker 1: I just want to hear. I want to hear. I
- 57:35Speaker 1: want to hear about the camera cameraman's role in this
- 57:37Speaker 1: hunt too. But you gotta start from the beginning. Yeah,
- 57:41Speaker 1: we land day one. We you see three caribs. First thing,
- 57:47Speaker 1: I didn't even off the plane, throw up my knockers
- 57:51Speaker 1: and I see three grizzlies and three caribou. I'm sorry,
- 57:54Speaker 1: explained that throw your what up knockers by no oh binocular. Okay,
- 58:02Speaker 1: I was called boks well when I grew up knockers
- 58:06Speaker 1: for something else that they still are. But I keep
- 58:09Speaker 1: my knockers right there at that part of my body.
- 58:12Speaker 1: And when I see a fella and I like his knockers,
- 58:14Speaker 1: I'd be like, nice knockers, bro, You've never said that.
- 58:22Speaker 1: So that was day one. I didn't I didn't see
- 58:25Speaker 1: those three. I think the next day I lasted up
- 58:29Speaker 1: six bulls. But we were moose hunting and we're like thinking,
- 58:34Speaker 1: there's gonna be more caribou, and they're they're moving. We
- 58:38Speaker 1: later heard we're moving northward. Yeah. The way they what
- 58:43Speaker 1: these bulls did that day is we spotted them fairly
- 58:46Speaker 1: early and actually ended up betting in this big valley
- 58:49Speaker 1: for quite a while and then feeding, and they never
- 58:52Speaker 1: left sight before dark, so they actually could have been bulls.
- 58:56Speaker 1: We could have caught it. Yeah, that day I think
- 58:59Speaker 1: I saw yeah, one bull. It was tricked out. He
- 59:05Speaker 1: was already getting his his He was already getting his
- 59:07Speaker 1: winter pellage, big white main, big white feet, clean antlerd,
- 59:15Speaker 1: big sun a bit, and he had five or six
- 59:16Speaker 1: coles with him. Yeah. Out of the six I saw,
- 59:19Speaker 1: half looked like that, half tricked out like all five
- 59:22Speaker 1: yo out. So we're pretty good. We're pretty confident that
- 59:26Speaker 1: we're gonna see more cariboo. We've been told we're probably
- 59:29Speaker 1: hunting stragglers, but at that point we've been seeing cariboo
- 59:34Speaker 1: every day. So my dad kills a bull moose. The
- 59:37Speaker 1: next day we go cariboo hunting, and can we go
- 59:40Speaker 1: there two days? One day to two days? We go
- 59:44Speaker 1: up on Yeah, sit all day, do not see a
- 59:48Speaker 1: single cariboo any direction? I didn't see any. Then I said,
- 59:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna go bull moose hunting with Steve, just because
- 59:57Speaker 1: we want to hunt together. Dad was getting a little
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: talking about we're missing days and more days go on
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: were because another day up there I spotted to the
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: one night we were in the tunnel, we crossed the valley.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: There got a whole other day up there, and then
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: it got rained out. Yeah, well we might have done
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: three up there, one partial to anyhow, a commanding view,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: a commanding view and see nothing not hiding nothing, void
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: of game. And so we go, Mousan, we're calling, calling,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: chatting it up, and uh we actually get to talking
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: about writing workshops, right, and workshops. You're true dissuading me
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: of spending my money on a writing workshop. I just
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: happened to look over my shoulder and air as someone
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: had manifested a single bowl caribou on the horizon. He's
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: a he's like on a beer commercial. Yeah, yeah, like
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: a bowl skyline on top of the high mountain. It
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: would be it would be a shot that photographers get
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: a little chubby for how many chubbies we have a
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: little list on a little shots the outdoor, the shots
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: the outdoor photographers get a chubby about. But it was
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: a distant shot. He was not close. But still it's
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: like this beautiful mountains seen in a silhouetted caribou, I
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: mean from the hoofs all the way up. Like he
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: went up there and said, see those fellows down here.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna stand here and watch the look on their
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: face when they see my ass. That's what he was
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: positioned like. So we make a quick plan, back up
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: our backpacks and we who oh, we had the whole pile,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: six of us there. Yeah, cameras balancing every which way.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: We just we took the lead. I didn't get to
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: see against any of the action. Everybody was talking about
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: how funny it looked. I guess in the back you
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: were saying how funny Rick looked. Coreys trying to get it.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: We're trying to send a bunch of ladies way, and
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: he talking about how he looks funny running with a
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: forty five pound pack one mile at the tundra. That's
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: a foot thought he looks sexy. He stayed with the
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: honest man, you were right one, yeah, that's right. And
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: at one point Steve commented on how we were kind
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: of out of order for a good production, like we
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: might not be getting the right camera angles and Rick
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: should be closer to me, and it was like, hey, Bud,
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: I got no problem. If I need to be on
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: his heels, I'll be there. And I trust Rick that
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: he could do that because so sexy. Yes, but then
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: you and Steve kind of split off. It was we
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: did yeah, I mean you're no, this is not normal
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: TV production. We had to catch him. Carib was one
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: of the few things you could run after that high elevation. Like,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: let's back up, because it just general carrib hunt. When
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: I spend a little bit of time caribe hunting, uh,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: we would go and get on a big high knob
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: or a big high tit and just wait and and
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: why because they're always moving, like you seldom watched then
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: just like rarely doesn't care. Just stay someplace, to stay
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: there all day long. They just are drifting and we
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: would sit out there and you have to catch them
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: where You're always like calculating, like if we start a
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: hauling asks now we'd be able to intercept him somewhere.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: If you caught one going away from me, you can't
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: catch him. You know, he's like a mile out. You're
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: not gonna overtake a grazing caribou there just like moving. Um,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: we see the most of them when if we're hunt
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: in August early September and if there was a wind
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: it feels breezy, you would not see carribo. You wouldn't
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: see any cariboos. Then the winded die. In the minute
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: the wind died, the hordes of mosquitoes and white socks
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: and black flies would rise up out of the tundra
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: and start mauling you. And you put your mash gloves on,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: and you put your bug net on your head, and
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: then you start seeing shiploads of cariboos because the bugs
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: would bother the carribe was so bad. That would make
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: the carribould get up and start moving, and they would
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: settle into these little draws and stuff to feed. And
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: then when it got buggy, they just start hauling ask
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: because they wanted to get away from the bugs. And
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: you're always like trying to gauge where you could catch them.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: We started off after Yanni's carried, but kind of not really.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: We thought we were being that we were gonna go
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: and way had them off and then actually go toward him. Yeah,
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: but by the time we go out there, we way
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: missed the mark. Way missed him, and we were saved
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: by the gregarious nature of caribou. Yeah, he was on
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: his own, gonna just feed walk do the care. Both
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: caribou thing across the bottom of the valley and up
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: the other side and disappear over the ridge. And as
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: he's cressing the ridge and he's on the horizon again
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: on gone gone, I mean ten more, ten more, ten
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: more steps and yeah, you're not being our bellies. At
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: this point, he happens to look over his shoulder and
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: see six mugs and cameras and dudes throwing their packs
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: down getting ready to shoot. And he's like, oh, what's
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: that my friends? Yeah, he's like and he was a
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: young bull, so he's probably that much more curious. I've
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: seen him all. It's just the thing they do. Man,
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: It's like when you see him the best sea. Here's
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: just get down, let him see it and get down.
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: And they just they just don't want to rule out.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: They don't want to like they have a herd mentality. Yeah,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: and I don't know why I even thought about it,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: because I don't think I've ever heard about it. Isn't
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: like a thing that dudes do. Care ab hunting with
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: the white flag. I know it from antil My. Yeah,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: Antilop punting. It can work. I've seen it work well.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: So we tried that with a game bag. Brody picked
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: up a drop antler, which are littering the ground around there.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: He picked up a drop antler and waved it. Wait,
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: he didn't want to leave. Then he caught our win
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: and then that changed his mind about in a hurry.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: But I like the fact that he was all on.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: He he was missing, he was missing out on the
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: days behind everybody else. Yeah, he was looking for his friends.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: The pilot told me. I told that about. He said,
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: it's a little bit unusual. You know, he he lived
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: his whole life. You're flying here. He says a little
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: bit unusual that you would see a bull traveling with
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: no known other cariboo in the area. But he said
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: that in his experience, Um, it's coming from his set
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: of experiences. It's frustrating for him to watch nature documentaries
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: where they are saying, like, oh, the caribou are migrating
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: to X place this time of year. They go this direction,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: and they all go there, and they all know to
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: go there. He said that. He says that that herd
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: has many places. They wind up. Some years they're up
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: in the White Mountain Range north of Fairbanks, the same
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: herd hundreds of miles away. Some years they go an
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: entirely different directions. Some years for days they're going north.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: They're like, oh, they're going north, and then all of
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: a sudden, for days they're going back south. Or one
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: side of the river, theres a bunch of Cariber going east.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: Side of the river, there's a bunch of Carriber going west.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: And he said it's like he says, he has seen
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: many times where a band of Cariboo will hold up
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: on one of those mountains where we were, get on
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: the wind blown side and spend the whole damn year there.
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: So he was saying, yeah, it's unusually saw and run
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: around by yourself until you consider that there's no like
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: absolute there's sort of like these general things. But within that,
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: he said, there's so much really nearly behavior and and
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: things sort of bucking the trend. He said, it's a
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: little bit like when he said when people speaking absolutes
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: about Cariboo movements, it's a little frustrating, but they do
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: like grate. Yeah, but he was saying that like to
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: be like, oh, they all went north. He said, it
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: just is it's like narrative simplicity, right, You Like you
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: have a documentary that needs to be like, okay, we're
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: talking about Cariboo migration. We can't talk about all these
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: places that are going. We don't have time. We gotta
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: they're going one place. Yeah, So he was saying it
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: could be that off last where every day all winter.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: I think there's one bullet for whatever reason. Side just
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: make a stand. Janna shot dynam label. Yeah, but he
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: was heading out. He was head its owner's head north.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: He was in the same direction as everybody else we
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: had seen. I was hunt one time on the north
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: slope of the Brooks Range, right ahead of the rut,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: and I remember it was we were out there first
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: week in October. I killed one on in October nine,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: and at that time of year, it's it's like the
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: ruts coming on, and everybody says, those carribou there all
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: not Oh there I go. Those caribou that are on
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: the north slope of the Brooks Range tend to winter
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: on the south slope of the Brooks Range, where they
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: go down into the Tiger Forest and winter down there.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: And they have on the coastal plane because it's more
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: wind and you can get away from the bogs and
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: it's good food. Now we were waiting and we're convinced
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: that all the caribou had left the coastal plane and
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: gone over the range because we weren't seeing ship. And
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: then one day here comes from miles off. I can't
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: remember what it was, nine or ten bulls just like
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: a laser headed towards the coastal plane. So going on
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: the wrong direction that quote wrong direction, but they move
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: so much that they could they could correct and be
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: you know, the next day turned around and recover all
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: the ground. But it is I mean, you do get
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: your heavy one to see these these certain things. Also
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: something we discussed. Yeah, they said that, uh, those moose
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: do winner there. He said, they particularly like those draws,
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: those willow choked draws will lead down to the main drainage.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: He said, they'll move once the snow starts piling up,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: they'll move up into those kind of like right blow
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: where we got it out. Yanni's cariboo, butcher down he's
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: cariboo that head high willow. He says, they like that
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: stuff a lot for wintertime. It's great walking through. You know.
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: Try to go back to one thing about these camera guys, Well,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: can I got I got such an epic in uptually
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: going on right now, We're gonna get He's at like
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: probably five hundred as he's about to go over the horizon, right,
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: I think that's what you're yelling numbers. But he sees us,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: he comes back towards us and gets I think all
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: the way maybe even under three hundred, heard something like that.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: But he's facing us the whole time, the winds kind
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: of blowing. I'm just not a huge like frontal guy shot,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: especially when I'm like thinking meat. Yeah, YI was practicing
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: excellent restraint because he was gonna let to carry but
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: get away rather than hit in the front. Yeah. And
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: then and I will not lie. This makes me kind
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: of like the trophy hunter or whatever. Had it been
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: just like the guard gangein like monster Bull with just
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: points coming off every direction, I would have taken that shot. Yea.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: So were you not shooting like on the shot place
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: with an argument? Were you not shooting the front facing
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: you because you're worried about meat wastedge because you're worried
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: about having a greatly diminished kill zone and getting the
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: clean kill in such whipping and it was it was
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: it was brisk wind. Yeah, which one was more? I
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: don't know, I mean it's one of the same. Really
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: wasted meat and crippling the critter. It's not the same thing. Well,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: I mean, it's still like a huge negative both of them.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: You know, So you're practice incredible restraint, bad ethics. He
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: was practicing good ethics. Weird shot, big antlers would have
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: caused me to make a maybe take a little bit
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: more questionable shot, possibly loose some meat, possibly not have
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: quite as you know, the hypercentage for a quality kill.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: I feel like I could have made that shot, sure,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: But on that bowl, I was like not. I was
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: like very able to like just be calm and be
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: like I'm gonna get the right shot, wait for it
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: to happen. You were just gonna let him walk. Well,
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: it was very I'll continue my story. He got down
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: like two or whatever, and he's like coming, he's coming,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: He's coming, And I thought he was almost I was like, man,
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: he's just gonna walk into our laps and it will
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: be a real gimme. And then also his nose picked
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: up and he got our wind and he was again
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: heading out. It looked like he got hit by a
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: car when that wind hit him. Yeah, so you're in
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: the bottom of the valley, yeah, right, and instead of
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: heading right back towards the her ezes, and he kind
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: of just heads back and like a side he's traversed
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: in the side of the hill instead of going, you know,
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: just back right it towards the horizon where he could
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: have quickly, you know, had he gone the same distance
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: towards her eyes, and he would have disappeared. But he
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: went across the hillside and uh, you gave him a
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: couple of hoots and hollers. He didn't stop. I feel
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: like that that that trick didn't he didn't care about
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: that trip. Yeah, I gave him. I gave him my my,
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: you try to bugle beagle Dad. I whistled bugle. He's like, hey,
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: my distant cousins stopped and he turned Bron's side and
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: you said, I don't know what you said, four oh something.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: I remember hearing four oh. And I was like, okay,
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: I got this. I knew that my second hash down
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: was roughly four yards, so I held right on and
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: shot broke clean what was it went through both lungs
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: and he ran down into a little fold in the
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: land and disappeared. Because I thought you missed. Because I
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: saw what I thought I saw. It was a proof
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: of powdered rock, right, But no, I don't know if
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: I might have just seen some hair come up. So
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: I heard the thump like when you get a good
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: hit on an animal. Sounds like a hitting the pumpkin,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: like hitting the watermelon. It's unmistakable. Yeah, I've heard described
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: as like a baseball bat to a wet towel that's hanging.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: That's good. A it is good. Um punch the pumpkin
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: hitting the wet toil the baseball bat just like oh no,
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: not like that, Like is that good? There's like a
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: whap wap deeper. Yeah, there you go. No, it's like
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: I heard that. Uh. And then we went over there
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: and he was you you double along to him. It's
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: the heart. We had to keep the harb very windy
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: and cold, and we uh dug it, drug it down
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: the hill and then and then proceeded to butcher it up.
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: And his liver. We're going a conversation about liver. I
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: had just had some very good deer liver hunting down
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: the southeast, and uh, I was kind of excited to
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: replicate that meal with this liver. And and the liver
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: is full of spots now in kosher slaughter which is
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: called um. Okay, if you're an observe if you're an
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: observant Jew, you would you eat kosher food non kosher food?
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: I think is it glad anyway? One of the things
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: you do during the Kosher slaughter processes you inspect the
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: animals organs because God said in the Old Testament, God says,
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: don't eat carrying okay, um, I mean don't eat dead.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: Don't eat animals you find laying around dead. Now, you
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: don't know why I said that. It's not for you
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: to like, it's not for you to say like, oh,
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: I'm not gonna do it because I don't want to
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: get sick. You don't know why I said it, But
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: don't eat dead animals you see laying around. So to
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: be extra careful because a lot of that, like the interpretation,
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: a lot of the rules is to be like if
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: he says something like God said, don't shave the corners
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: of your face in the Old Testament. Now, ultra observant
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: Jews will will grow out the sideburns because they're like, well,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: I don't know where the corner of your face ends
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: and your hair begins. So to play it ultra safe
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: and to be extra careful to be observant of the law.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: I'll grow out this long thing. So God says don't
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: eat carrying. They would say, well, then you better not
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: eat a wounded animal. Don't eat an animal that's damaged.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: To be extra careful. So when you do kosher slaughter,
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: you inspect the organs to to look and make sure
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: there's no evidence of illness in that animal, because you're
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: being extra careful to follow God's word. Now that's not
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: why I was inspecting his liver, but I haven't. But
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: but I happen to be inspecting his liver and they
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: had large white spots on it. Yeah, this way predates
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: the FDA, but that's actually us. So I happen to
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: be inspecting his liver. Notice some large whites on it.
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: Yanni tries to tell me, it's some land in the creek. Well,
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: it was just funny that we hadn't noticed it when
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: well I had noticed when I cut it out and
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: then went and put it in the creek, and we
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: talked about leaving in the creek. Washed off a little
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: because my mom when I was a kid, I had
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: iron poor blood and I used to eat a lot
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: of liver and my mom would take deer liver and
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: so cut the deer liver up and soaking lemon water
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: to draw the blood out. People soaking milk or water,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: various things that draw the blood out. When you throw
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: you throw a liver in the creek, let me change
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: its color, yeah quickly? Um So Yanni threw in his
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: cold ass creek. And then we pulled it out and
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: I had these things in it. Who wasn't did a
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: biopsy on that liver. We cut it open. I don't
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: senor know about it though. I thought it was some
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: deposits a big ass parasite there. I don't real what
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: it was, but that's what I recalled. The DNR Michigan
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: biologists tell me it was some kind of parasite. He said, Tony,
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: it's real waxy. Yeah, what do you do on your phone? Rick,
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: I'm looking up fatty liver, which that's what I think
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: it is. I don't think it's a parasite. Rick feels
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: as though, and we caught we did a biopsy on it.
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: You pull out a thing the size of a p
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: with an encase. It's got a case and you pulled
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: out and it is just like a waxy fat inside there,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: whether it's a paris that are not so we uh,
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: we discarded the liver. Would animals get I mean, humans
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: do because they eat the wrong diet. Would that animal
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: get that? It wouldn't occur in that way. It occurs
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: just like you have like a lot of abdominal he'd
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: have like a lot of fat in his abdominal cavity,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: like kidney fat. He's not gonna wind up with balls
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: of fat. Rick. Well, yeah, maybe that's that's what I'm
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: looking like. It didn't look like a larvae. That might
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: have been an agger or something. Where the hell was?
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: It was good, eat, not deliver. We did deliver, and
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: then this morning, Yeah se wants talk. Who wants to
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: explained this morning's meal? But yeah, because he well he
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: already got to explain a bunch of stuff. Well, I
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: watched you master chef and hunter prepare a extraordinary meal. Uh.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: The primary uh entree was bone marrow. We took and cut,
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: sawed up the mooses front yeah, shins, and cooked those
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: on a pan. I went and collected some berries, blueberries, huckleberries,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: and cranberries. Right, what was the third one? You picked? Blueberries, crowberries, crowberry,
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: cranberries all right, and then you reduced those down added
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: I'm sorry you took a little bit of the fat
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: out of the bone marrow path the reduced heated that
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: reduced it down, added it to the blueberries to make
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: a blueberry reduction like a fat reduction, like a sauce.
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: And then we also took a mushroom that you had
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: rough stemmed the bleat thank you, which I at first
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: didn't think had any taste to it, but by the
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: third one that not because the flavor just kind of
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: comes through, you know, it grows on you. Ah. So
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: we had that sautet in a pan, and then we
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: also had uh the tender loin, which was grilled on
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: an open flame fire, and you sort of made like
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: a little I'm sure there's a French word for it
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: or derv stacked up with the tenderloin on the bottom.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: I'm sorry, cariboo. Yeah, the tender tenderline and then the
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: bone marrow and then the mushroom on the side, with
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: a little sauce covering it all. And you served it
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: on a a moose dropping not dropping sho shoulder blade. No,
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: I thought we put it on the We did put
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: it on schedule, ok. Yeah, So we put it on
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: the bone of the scapula of the moose and that
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: was very impressive for a field and it all tasted excellent.
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: So for those of you who have never had any
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: bone marrow, you gotta do it. But you had eaten
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: bone marrow, Oh yeah, I've done. It was Dennison, thanks
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: to you and Hank Shaw. So it's not it's not
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: a h and I'm sure I could find a Latman
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: recipe for it. I would think most European NU countries do.
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: That's grand down the bone marrow in a French restaurant
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: in San Francisco and I ordered that bone. I remember
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: sitting there and I saw it. I was like, I
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: can't this is this is many many years ago. I
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: think this is you know, I'll tell you what year
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: it was. It was two thousand three or two thousand four,
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: and sitting there and uh, there's two thousand three and
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: I see bone around like I just didn't understand what
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: they meant. And I order it and its discs of
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: femur cut and they got each one has a sprig
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: of time and a sprig of rosemary stuck in it
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: with sea salt on top. And I spread some of
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: that on some toast. And the first thing, the first
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: and only thing I thought, was do you know how
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: many pounds of that ship I have left land in
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: the woods. Yeah, and most tunners should they don't know
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: about it. Yeah, but it does take some word white
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: tailor is not a lot there. I usually say to people,
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: I just say, like white bigger than a white hell.
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: It's worth your while. I think on tongue, and I
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: think on marrow bones. You know, you get into an elk,
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: like that's a marrow bone, a mule to your white tail.
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: It's just not a lot of think about game processors
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: in the West, how many pounds of that stuff? But
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: I don't think that ship can't be that good for you.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: I think it's really good for you. I don't know.
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: If you're trying to like watch, I don't care. I
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: don't pay attention to it. But if you're in a
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: situation physically where you're trying to watch cholesterol and all, that,
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: better than a Coca cola, I'm pretty sure is actually
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: good for you. It depends on what diet is in fat.
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: In these days, high fat is in so yeah. But
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: here's the thing I didn't change what I I eat,
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: what I'm gonna eat. I know what I feel good eating.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: Now people who are like, are you used to not
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: eat this and now I eat that? When you're involved
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: in a fat diet, no one knows they're doing a
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: fat diet while they're doing it. They only know it's
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: a fat diet later. So now you got the whole
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: damn world. You were just like red, Yeah, it's like, oh,
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: this is what jeans look like. No, it's not what jeans.
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: So it's like it's like now I was like, yeah, fat, fat, fat,
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: Oh of course it's you know, it's healthy. But like
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: a while ago, no one was doing it. They're doing
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: it now. All the people that change what they eat
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: all the time according to what they're hearing on, whatever
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: kind of media they take in, those people will in
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: some amount of time move away from fat. I will
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: still be consuming the same food I always eat, cause
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: I don't shift my food around based on what dudes
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: tell me. But for but most people, not most, many
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: many people do. And and and now they'll be like, oh,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: what you're supposed to do? And then they'll be on
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: to some other ship and I'll be like, you should
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: really be eating a ton of bread and refined sugar.
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: That's actually where the science is and then and that's
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: what I eat now. Yeah, No, I'm just saying, no
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: one engaged in a fat diet and knows they're in
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: a fat diet. Right now, there's a fat diet that
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: happened to be Like Yanni, there were talking about this
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: with shoes. When I used to work for Ronnie Bain
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: Twinlak installations, we wore red wing boots that had a
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: white flat soul on them because we did most of
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: our work on concrete bear concrete floors. I the other
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: day found a pair of these boots and purchased them
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: because I always liked that style of boot. And Yanni
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: was saying, those boots and the ship right now really
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: in fashion. And we're talking about when fashion comes and collides,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: like fashion comes and collides with you, like you're on
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: a path and all of a sudden it's get you
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: get hit by fashion. Yeah, that fashion was just where
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: somebody went home and saw a pair of grandpa's little boots.
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: He said, man, those mothers would look good. Why don't
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: I make some money and we'll just popularize that and
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: make that the new things. So fashion collided with you.
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: And that's easy because stupid follows that all the time. Yeah,
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: I mean look at America. I mean just oh yeah,
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: that's create this and it's another stupid thing we can
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: spend money on exactly. But for the bone, I feel
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: like I feel like my diet has been I feel
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: like the diet I eat has has fashion came and
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: collided into my diet. Now they'll all go off and
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: do other ship, but I'll be eating what I like
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: to eat. For the bone marrow, there's like if you
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: eat a like back and you know, before people agriculture
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: and not quite poor people, but before we could go
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: buy food in the grocery store, there's a legitimate reason
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: to eat bone marrow because lean meat doesn't have what bone. Man,
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: you want to hear an interesting theory that I read
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: one time. I don't know where. I don't know if
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: this theory is fashionable anymore. Ricky might be able to
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: speak to it. You're schooled up on this kind of stuff. Uh,
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: when you look at the African diaspora by which hominis
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: Um left Africa, of course, Neanderthals left Africa, you know,
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: six years ago and had quite a long ten year
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: in Europe before we showed up for Homo sapiens showed up.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: But there's a theory out there that hominids didn't leave Africa.
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: Tell you if you've ever heard this, I read this,
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: and I'm not I'm not weighing in on this. I'm
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: just telling you about a thing I read. I find
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: oftentimes people have a very hard time, Like you'll go
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: and tell someone about something you read and you're just saying, like,
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: I read this thing. I'm telling you what I read,
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: and they'll get mad at you. So you're like, they're
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: like mad at you. I'm like, I can't tell are
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: you mad at me that I read it? Are you
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: mad at me that I'm telling you about it? Because
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: I'm not claiming that it's mine. I'm just telling you
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: as not a one to one right in the reading
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: and the interpretation of the thing you read, well, I
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: mean you might you have a pretty good memory, though
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: you give For example, I'm talking about I once read
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: an article thing I just told you guys about this.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: I read an article where I was saying like, were
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: we to build were we to build an impenetrable wall
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: between the US and Mexico? Here we go, I'm not
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: doing any here's the problem. I'm not doing value judgment
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: right now. But there's no way for people to listen
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: to me without realizing I'm not doing value judgment because
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: people have so much ship in their head that they
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: need to assign value even when someone's not making value judgment.
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: But there was a biologist who said, were we to
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: build this impenetrable wall between the US and Mexico border,
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: it would have it may have the following implications for
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: migratory patterns and movements of jaguars, mountain lions, and black bears.
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: So he's just saying, as we consider this idea, if
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: you're interested in large carnivores and large omnivores when making
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: the decision about the rights and wrongs of this, a
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: set of factors to consider would be the movements of
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: large rare animals. Okay, he's just throwing it out there now.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: I put this article up on social media. I put
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: it up on Facebook and get bombarded with people saying, well,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: if you lost your job to a you know, but
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: it's like but like, no, no, no, I wasn't saying
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: that at all. I didn't write the article I'm sharing
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: with you a collection of thoughts about a thing that's
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: in the national debate, and people were attacking me for
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: having drawn attention to a piece of field work done
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: by someone because they couldn't keep their values out of
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: it or their their world view out of it. But
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: here's what I fail to see. Why did you not
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: support the wall? And do it be like, yes, all
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: factors included, all factors considered, including the implications for jaguars,
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: mountain lions, and black beards. I still support the wall,
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: and I've taken time to consider that because my people
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: don't work that way. They're like, I don't want to
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: hear about that ship because I support the wall. Who
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: cares about those bears? Not even there? They're like, they're like,
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: you can't say, like you can't look at the look
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: at things. Well, so I'm precacing. I'm practicing my story
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: because I'm not making a comment about humans and how
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: our species came. I'm not telling any of that. I
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: read a story where someone was positing someone was making
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: a hypothesis that the human diaspora from Africa had some
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: link in time with the um with the proliferation of
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: saber tooth cats. Now here's why this is important to
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: this theory. Saber tooth cats can't crack open bones, could
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: not just tooth structure. We were talking about how wolverine
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: will get in due. He'll whittle his way in there
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: like a dog. You know, dog will slowly destroy a bone.
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: Wolverine was gonna get in there, eventual's gonna get that
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: marrow out, saying saber tooth cats, uh can make a kill,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: they eat soft tissue. They couldn't. They couldn't get into
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: the bone once you had this guy was positive came
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: here as a man of woman, saying that once we
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: see this great proliferation of sabre tooth cats on the landscape,
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: we start seeing more movements out of humans. He was
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: suggesting that that there was a there was a an
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: abundance of bone marrow on the landscape because people who
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: were didn't have a very sophisticated tool set. Um we're
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: just starting to mess around with stone tools and figuring
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: out how all that ship worked. We're in knew about
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: ads is and hammers and anvils and things, but weren't
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: very effective at going out and killing large, dangerous animals
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: with projectile points yet. And they were making a lot.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: They were making them like pre pre human human, right,
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: making the lifestyle out of out of scavenging carcasses and
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: cracking them open and getting and getting meryl. You know,
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: it was just throwing it out there. That's something I read.
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: I think that's whether's they talked about, this idea that
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: early humans were scavengers. All these like sort of bipedal
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: semi bipedal creatures cruised around and then they could carry
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: away meat. They could like run up to a carcass,
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: grab some ship, and hustle off before the big guys
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: showed up before. Yeah, rain front or right now. You
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: don't want to you can't fight, you don't, I mean
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: you just starn't equipped to fight with other predators. But
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: you can and grabbing stuff, barrows transportable, it comes to
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: its own package. It's sealed, it's her medically sealed. Yeah,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: I think can that last? You know what I'm gonna start.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: I should start messing routh going and cracking open a
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: bone out and then and seeing what it looks like.
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: I have found old bones and fore and cracked and
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: open and had it been like kind of dry it
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: out and whatnot. But it'll be really interesting to take
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: a shin bone and throw all the yard. I have
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: to think it would last a long time, man, I
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: mean a hell a lot longer than the than the
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: bones a week and like seventy degree weather or longer
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: and not even I can't say it would. I wouldn't
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: be I can tell you wouldn't be surprised. Yeah, but
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: I think if it's cool, reasonably cold out for like
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: forty degrees or colder, it's solid a room. It's solid
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: at room. It's a fat it's solid at room temperature.
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: More than a week later, yeah, true, nine days later. Yeah,
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: just laying on an air striping. You know. The best
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: thing is a scapula had you know, bit some meat
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: just kind of on it. But the like, oh gosh, yeah,
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: I was cured. But the color, the white bone, red meat,
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: blueberry bone. Marrow. Yeah, we had a scavenge. From the scavenger.
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: We had to take what the wolverine left us. We
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: went on to get the fevers, and the wolverine fevers.
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: We had to know. It's my favorite marrowbone. I don't
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: know why in the world I had never cut into
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: a shin bone. Yeah, I'd watch those camp robbers climbing
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: all over those things when they were up there on
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: the so you know they were doing another thing on
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: those bones, tooth on those capulus. That's a bright bird man,
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: like the camp robbers after we So we killed a
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: moose and the camp robbers were there within a couple
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: of hours, not even probably an hour, and we were
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: throwing bits of fat to him, and then we realized
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: we were being followed. The rest of the week, we
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: were being followed by camp robbers all the time. They're like,
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: see those dudes, Yeah, follow those guys, man, because there's
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: gonna be something. Because they called whiskey Jack Gray j
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: camp robber. Yeah, Corvette. Corvette's old trappers don't like him
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: because too right is that another word for him? I
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: know that like you read when you read old trapper accounts,
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: they really didn't like them because they would tune into
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: your trap line and in all your Martin sets they
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: would always be they'd harass your bait. So people were
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: always pissed that when they killed the Matt Trap, the
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: mad trap from Rat River, he had a couple of
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: frills and whiskey Jacks in his backpack. He was feeding
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: off him. Wolverines feeding off the trappers hate wolverines too.
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: They do the same thing. Follow the trap line, right,
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: and then they would just eat eat the stuff they
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: got stuck on the trap. Kill your catch, Jhanna Senior.
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: You any concluding thoughts, Oh yeah, quite a few extraordinary week,
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: well two weeks basically. Uh, well, a couple of things.
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: Let me start out. First of all, having just watched
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: the show, having been involved with my son, just you know,
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: seeing what he goes through. What does that mean? Well,
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: I'm sorry, let me back, having talked to my son
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: and you know, hearing what he does to do the show,
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: and having met you in the field before doing a show,
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: but now being in a show. But it's a whole
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: entirely different perspective on it. It's an incredible amount of
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: work that you guys, and I'm talking about everybody. It's
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: not just you, it's not him, it's the camera crew,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: the field, you know, production assistance. Everybody works their asses
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: off to make this show go. And I mean it
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: to me. You know, everybody has kind of like their
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: time and place. They're all like a well oiled wheel
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: in the bigger set of wheels. It all moves together.
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: You never hear anybody bitching at least hardly at all.
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: Did you hear some bitching? Dude? I start feeling bad,
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: Like I felt bad for Corey because I'm reminded myself
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: the course you're working, and it's like we're just sitting
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: in one place for several days. I started to feel
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: self conscious. No, I just go in my own little world.
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: People pray for the job that you just described people
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: when they watch a show. I mean, like, you know,
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: some of these silly reality shows are on TV. I
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: don't think that those camera people have to move around
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: as much. Is what I saw you guys doing this week.
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: I mean it's when they say forty pounds of gear,
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: they're not kidding, and that's probably more than that. And
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: then you've got headsets on, and this stuff that we're
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: walking over is I mean, it's either rock shale sliding
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: or its moss that sinks in. And then you got
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: these tussocks of grasses right very uneven, and you're watching
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: somebody on the lens and you're moving across this while
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: they're moving. That's a tough job. Tough job. And then
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: putting the whole that entire picture together, it's an incredible
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: amount of work. That's the first thing I want to say.
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: So my hat's off to you guys. And then my
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: hat's off to you Steve, because you add an incredible
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: amount of authenticity to that show because you won't take
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: anything but top tier. Man. It's like, there's no fraud
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: to this show. It's like the real deal. And it
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: was tough enough just walking, you know, around, hanging around you,
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: but just to keep up with you. It's it's tough
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: and knowing that you want that better quality show. So
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: when I asked you why are you making why do
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: you do meet either? Your answer was excellent. Was for
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: those guys who hate TV who want to see the
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: real deal. And I may be paraphrasing it, that's what
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: almost you know, you get like in your mind, you're
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: sort of picture who you want. Yeah, yeah, and that's
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: what this show is about. And of course you know,
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: I'm coming in kind of from the outside, you know,
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: considering myself a experienced hunter man. Well not really, not
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: when you put yourself into Alaska, because that's an entirely
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: different environment. So that that, you know, I mean, there's
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: a lot of environmental conditions that I had to get
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: used to, like constantly having your hands cold, you know.
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: I mean you do warm up, but it's you're constantly cold.
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: It's just just one of those things I thought you
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: were kicking ask though, Well, I thought I did. Okay
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: for a guy that's you know, my age and and
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: physical condition, all things considered. Yeah, I thought what I did.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: All right, crew, acknowledge that we talking a little bit
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: about can you hear me? Why are you wearing it
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: like that across your forehead? Because I've got a pointy head,
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: And when we get into this time period of the
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: podcast and it's sitting right on top, it really starts
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: to keep passing with them cold. He's yeah, um, but
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: no about how you really haven't camped in forty plus
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: years and all of a sudden you went on a
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: nine day camping forty years Where are you camping all
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: those how many ever? Forty years ago? That was with
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: my dad, you know, in a tent. And then we
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: know this isn't car camp and this is like this,
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: this is the real deal. This is the real deal. Yeah,
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: I mean you're out there in the f and wilderness
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: and yeah, it's it's it's cold. You were a sleeping
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: about twenty seconds every you know, Hey, there's is no kidding.
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: I would lay down. I could get like a third
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: way through my meditation. You know, I remember my son
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: waking me up, quit snore and dad that was only
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: one night. What's your medic what's your meditation? Uh? That's
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: for me. Well it's not okay, don't tell me yours.
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: What do you mean by that I meditate? What does
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: that mean? Basically? I just released everything. Just I just
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: let it afist in your head. Well I do, We're gonna, yeah,
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: I do. I go through a little checklist, and then
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: at the end of that checklist, I basically just I
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: zone out. I just go to that other place. Nothing.
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: Your checklist consists of specific things that you need to
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: think through, or is it that you're emptying of everything
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: that comes up? Yeah, I'm not going to share that
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: with you. You're gonna have to develop that on your own.
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: Why can't you share with me? Because it's it's a
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: personal thing. It's what I do in the other ways.
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: It's the way I've developed my intuition. My actue Corey
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: will tell you. I mean, I think it's a very
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: personalized thing. But what is the goal? And you ask
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: the goal is nothingness, to be totally nothing, to be
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: totally withdrawn from everything that is around you, so from all,
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: from emotion, from all, want to be just. I don't know,
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: that's like the ultimate spirit that point. Are you able
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: to meditate while hunting or do you meditate you've got
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: to be in the dark and you're sleeping. You can.
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: You can meditate any place point time. That's just darious
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: levels of meditation that you can achieve. Yeah. I don't
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: do anything like that, but I remember I read something
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: that long ago where someone was a practitioner of meditation.
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: Someone said to him, you know, I don't have time
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: to meditate twenty minutes a day. He said, if you
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: don't have time to meditate twenty minutes a day, you
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: ought to be meditating two hours today. I totally agree,
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: And basically in two minutes you can do anything that
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: you need to do at the last Yeah, there's a
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: lot of good stuff online. People want to check it out.
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: I got no experience with it. I don't really to
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: understand what it is. Well, but you're going there. I mean,
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: you're on your own path, you know, and eventually things
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: will come to you that will say, hey, you know
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: what I gotta check this out. What I do do
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: I stumbled into a Eastern practice, if you will, I
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: don't know if it is or not. When I can't sleep,
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: I focus very heavily on inhaling and exhaling breath. I
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: just think about, okay, like air coming in coming, in coming,
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: in air going out, going out going, Well, that's and
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: it makes me falseleep, so goddamn fast. I don't I
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: don't do yoga like my son does, but I think
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: that's the ones common thing with with meditation. That's the
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: simplest of all meditations, just basically concentrating on your breath,
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: a little simple. So the last thing I want to
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: say about you all you want the last item would
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: be that having grown up in the Midwest, hunted in
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: the Midwest and then in the West for big game
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: elk and a lope and uhl, dear hanging out there
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: is still you kind of get the feeling that you're
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: hunting in a box, so yuh kind of like a
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: corn flakes box. But I'm saying Midwest was definitely the
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: corn flakes box. And then you go out west, it's
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: a little bit bigger when you when you get to Alaska,
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: it's like somebody took the top and just ripped it
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: right off of that corn flakes box. And there's just
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: no limit. I mean there is. You look around you
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: and you go like, holy smokes man. No matter what
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: direction I look in, it's this is it? Yea? And
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: that took some I'm getting used to the thing that
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: first struck me when I started hanging around in Alaska.
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: And it was after I started hanging around in Alaska
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: til my one of my older brothers, finished his schooling
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: and went up there to as a biologist the first
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: thing to struck me. And it still strikes me now
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: as you see the size of rivers, they don't have
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: roads on them because you think about like even in
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: the West, there's a certain size of river, the like
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: there's a threshold right where you get like a size
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: of river the invariably has a road on right, right right.
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: And the fact that you can have well the Yukon,
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: for instance, which is a you know, drains significant portion
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: of the conda, it is by all definitions, a mighty river.
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: There's there's no paralleling road. Yeah. And if you imagine,
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: like I used to think, like if I was king
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: of the world, where my call just made. I would
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: take a lot of river courses in the American West,
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: and I would and I would, I would make them
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: not roaded. If I was just able to act with
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: im community, you know what I mean, I would say, like,
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: you know, we're gonna take this river and does that
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: even road on it. We're gonna tear the road up,
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: but um it will last. You have giant, mighty rivers
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: that you can't there's no road to go on them, right,
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: I said to the pilot today flying out, I said,
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: do you think right now, still today, that there are
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: populations of game animals, moose and whatnot that are living
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: and dying unhunted simply because you cannot get to him?
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: He said, oh, yeah, absolutely sure. Because you got a moose,
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: you kill a moose, you have you are bound by
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: law to move five hundred pounds of flesh out of there.
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: So you either are gonna have to get a wheeled vehicle,
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: or you're gonna have to get a boat, or you're
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: gonna have to get fixed wing aircraft because you can't
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: and you can't use the helicopter for any aspect upon it.
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: You can't transport hunters, you can't transport hunting equipment. You
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: can't transport meat has to be fixed wing aircraft, right
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: or a horse? Did you mention a horse? Horse? So
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: you need to get some form of conveyance there, or
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: you're limited by what you can do on your own self.
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: Yanni was just saying that tonight that this hunt that
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: I experienced today probably would not have been possible except
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: for a very few people. What years ago? I was
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: relating to him, how Buck, now we can do these
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: hunts in a week because it's so easy to get
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: in get out. We're even just twenty years ago when
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: you wanted to come up and do this kind of hunt,
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: it was gonna take a month. You know, the old
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: old guys would say that Alaska was ruined by the
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: bush plane. Um Buck bow who we were talking about,
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: being a moose expert, moose caller. Buck Bowden one day
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: was saying to me just a couple months ago, in fact,
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: I was at his place in the southern Alaska Range,
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: and he was saying, you know, the really true hunting,
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: the true hunt ended thirty four years ago, And I said,
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: what was the true hunting? He goes, before we had
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: satellite phones and stuff. He goes because back then that
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: was like the exploration. You could still ride a horse
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: and go in and fly in and ride a horse
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: in and hunt stuff knowing and hunted in modern times,
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: and he said, the sad phone ruined it because as
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: a guide, we used to wave goodbye to that plane
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: and it was gonna be ten days, twenty days, and
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: there was no change in anything. It was when that
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: plane took off, it was gone, and you had a
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: rendezvous to meet that plane at a specified point in
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: ten or twenty days, and then you just hunted. He said,
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: Now a lot of clients get their thing and they
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: can't get out of there quick enough, and they're on
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: the phone. He'll even say let's go get a caribou,
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: let's go look for a bear, and they're like, well,
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: let's get the hell out of here. I got what
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: I'm after, And he said it really started to sour
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: things for him that long ago. So it's always like,
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: you know, wolt from our perspective, like I guess there
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: that we're like, I'll always be that I experienced the
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: good old days, right, And there'll be some as yet
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: undeveloped technology and then in ten years or twenty years
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: I'll be sitting around saying that I had it during
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: the good days and now it's all messed up because
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: of unknown At least we didn't have cell phones out there.
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: I mean, I can imagine one day where for some
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: sort of satellite whatever, I can't send a tax can't
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: make a phone call. So yeah, you can make a
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: phone call on a satellite phone. But yeah, so someday
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: we'll be like, man, it used to be why I
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: couldn't send a you know, text messenger or whatever. You're
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: making up for it tonight though, that's right, But don't
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: feel bad, Rick, I can't tonight yet either. So all right,
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: that's good. I'm making Yeah, I'm bouncing out though. Yeah.
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: A concluding thought, he got his headset back on, right?
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: Was it the wolverine think about taking the two femurs?
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: My closing thought is a question. I have a theory
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: about this. Did he take the two femurs or was
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: it just coincidence and or randomness? I think you could
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: move those front legs because of the shoulder blades just
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: too damn big with that scapula and everything. That's my theory.
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: He's got four legs. I should call my brother who
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: does a lot of statistics work through work for work.
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: What are the chances if you have four objects? Rick
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: Ricker Bill hear this out? What are the chances that
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: he grabbed the two back legs? What are the odds
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: you have four objects? What are the odds that two
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: of them, two specified ones get picked? I don't know.
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: What are your combinations? One you can grab one front,
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: one back, two fronts or two backs? Yes, there's only three.
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: You have two a's and two bees, and someone has
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: two picks and they happen to grab two bees. What
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: are the odds that they're gonna grab two? Aren't bad odd?
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: Is it? But you're not talking about a human being,
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: You're talking about an animal. You know, you trip me
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: up about statistics. That was still the same probability, right,
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: I mean, if it was random, I'm saying, I don't think.
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: In my mind, I haven't thought, oh it was randomness.
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: But here's nothing my brother talks about oftentimes because he's
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: very involved in you probabilities that we find patterns. He
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: thinks fly fishermen are fishermen, not fly fishermen are more
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: guilty of this than most. We see patterns where no
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: pattern exists. Oh, they were coming on Shard Truce and
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: then all of a sudden they were coming on Olive.
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: He's like, I think that it has a lot to
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: do with coincidence and what was going on, and like
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: maybe one of you you were running three different things
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: and some guy cast at Chartreuss and someone caught one
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: on and then everybody put a Chartruss on and later
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: appeared as though Chartruss. But you know, it's the classic
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: correlation causation issue. It's rampant. But with the wolverine, I
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: feel that I just might drive him nuts were he
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: here right now. I feel as though there's something about that.
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: It was easy to drag those back legs off, and
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: the capitoles were hard to manage. I don't know. Maybe
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: they taste yeah, maybe they taste better. And that's what
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: John he was driving at. But oh yeah, he's thinking
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: there's more more. He's handled enough carcasses to know what's
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: got the goods? Were they too closest bones? What was
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: interesting about because BRONI and I went and looked for
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: it for him one last time last night, right at dusk,
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: and I pulled that high over that carcass that hide
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: was still pulled over the rib ken. He so he
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: hadn't gone through the pain to go do that, to
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: dig inside there too. For whatever reason, he's like, no,
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: I'm taking these four lower legs and I'm gonna go
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: stash him. I think, and this again me, I'm not anthropomorphizing,
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: but I'm I think that when when a critic like
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: that shows up, I think that he, through experience, knows
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: that a bigger bed or something's gonna show up the
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: same way like a gray j they're the first of
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: the carcass. They get displaced, no doubt by the ravens.
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: The ravens are gonna get displaced. The ravens we saw
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: get displaced by the wolverine. The wolverine has to know
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: from experience that when you find something, a very good
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: approach is to get that ship out of there before
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: the grizzly shows up. So they're known to every now
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: and then. Yeah, but I'm sure are like like the
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: fact that he was dragging it way across the hillside
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: down into wherever he was dragging it. He was getting
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: it away from something. Sure, and we know that that
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: he was dragging I know that he was dragging it,
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: but we saw him dragging parts off. So I don't know.
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: I'm just like I'm trying as I try to make
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: sense out of other things I observed in a somewhat
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: unscientific fashion, informed maybe by some amount of science. I
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: feel like there's something like that going on. It just
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: happens that when I saw the other wolverine that I
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: saw four years ago, and he was doing the same thing,
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: he was cashing parts off caribou kills. Was there any
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: rhyme for reason why he was hauling away? No. The
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: first thing I saw him hauling away, which just like
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: before I get my spot and scope on him, I
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: could not, for the life of me figure out what
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: animal was looking at because he was hauling away a
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: whole half a neck and a whole head of a
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: cow cariboo that still had you know, her antlers on
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: her head. You see that dragon along the ground. No,
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: I mean, this dude was like just moving and I'm
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: looking at it, and I just could not, like, because
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: you're seeing white, you're seeing antler and just like you're
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: just like running through the species in your head. Yeah,
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: and you know black animal in the snow and it
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: wasn't Yeah, exactly, pretty much like this weird jack little thing.
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: But yeah, finally that spot ands go bind. I'm like,
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: oh Wolverin hearing ahead, Sure, why did I think of that?
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: And we watched him for you know, we're probably watched
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: him make four or five trips. He would go into
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: like this kind of a draw that later we skied
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: by it and you could see kind of had like
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: a crevasse almost, you know, kind of he had like
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: a little stat like just a dark hole that he
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: was going down into, and we watched him make four
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: or five trips putting cariboo parts in there. This is
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: up around the Arctic Circle. Yeah, north Arctic Circle, um,
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: north side of the Brooks Range south and north north. Uh.
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: Is that your concluding thought? Yeah, that's a good addition
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: to the story, Corey. Uh, since we I think it's
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: just just fake. Sorry it's late, but we just finished
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: up a father's son meat either. It's just a good
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: reminder I think that I take for granted your loved
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: ones or your family members, and you know, set aside
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: some time and you're busy schedules, maybe to go do
- 1:57:33Speaker 1: an adventure with them, or you know, just get out
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: there and enjoy each other's company while you can that's
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: I thought about that a lot. I think about a
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: lot of I think about my father a lot all
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: the time. I thought about like how much he would
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: have enjoyed a trip like that. Yeah. No, I heard
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: it once in a hunting camp reaction in Mexico guiden
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: cous deer and there's a father son combo there and
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: they said one of the biggest reasons they like to
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: go hunting together was for the windshield time. Because when
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: they're on the hunt, they're like pretty hard, they're hardcore
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: hunters and their hunt, but they're like, yeah, we always
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: drive everywhere, So there's like this time, this time period
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: with it that they don't have in their lives anymore,
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: without kids and wives and life and work and stuff
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: going on. So they get to get in the truck
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: together and drive six or twelve or two days time
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: and have winshow time and just get to talk. Yeah. Yeah, hunting.
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: I mean for me and my father, it's it created
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: this situation last ten fifteen years where we spent time
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: together where that we wouldn't have otherwise. You know, best
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: hunt I was ever on was when he shot that,
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: and nothing I've ever s like, no hunt I've ever
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: been been on is compared to that. You know, Well,
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: that's true because I now kind of every year we
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: tried to get up to Wisconsin and I have a
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: turkey hunt. I do with both my sons and other people,
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: but primarily with them, and it's yeah, it's enjoyable time.
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: And they're you know, it's not like they're little kids anymore.
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: I'm learning it's valuable, especially that it's different when you're
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: when you're both adults. You know, it's not like dad
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: taking the twelve year old right now. It's right. Yeah,
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: maybe thinks that's that's the problem is I never got
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: with my own with my own dad. I never got
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: beyond that point like I got to be the age,
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: you know, and then we moved like we just moved away.
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: So I never had like, uh, I never took the
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: time really except for like hunting rabbits and small game
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: for five six hours. Never took the time to go
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: out like as adults. Then he died. We'll just hanging
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: out with Joannie Senior. We'll give you some more of
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: this good, right. I mean there's two two things. One
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: I mean, as a non hunter, I've really enjoyed getting
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: to hang out with the like, I don't know, hunting
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: cultured humans like progressive hunters that are getting after it,
- 2:00:05Speaker 1: and I feel like doing it in a way that's, um,
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: I don't know, I can see myself pursuing hunting in
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: a way that I haven't before. And one just mostly
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: wolves and wolverines totally all the Yeah, and omnivorce. Yeah,
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: let's not about the omnivorce. Um No, But I just
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: I do look forward to that point where I'm gonna,
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: i don't know, kill kill something and eat it and
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: cook it up. And it's just it's such a cool process,
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: um to be a part of. So that's that's on
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: the one hand. And then ye, you still talk to him. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: he would. He would have not wanted to hike around.
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: He would have he would have been camp cook. Yeah,
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: he would have been happy to cook up some good stuff,
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: put some butter on some bone marrow. He would have
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: loved that. But he would have but he would have
- 2:01:01Speaker 1: not really wanted to hike around. Yeah, I mean he
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: would have done it maybe, But that being said, the
- 2:01:09Speaker 1: other thing was the Latvian part of this episode, Like
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: I mean we sort of like joke about it when
- 2:01:17Speaker 1: you guys are. I mean, I'm listening to your audio
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: all the time, and so no, well, when they're on camera,
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: the Jans when they're on camera would speak English, but
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: as soon as soon as they walked off almost always
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: just bust right into Latvian. And to listen to that,
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: it's just like, I don't know if there's something fulfilling
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: about um, about a culture that has kind of maintained
- 2:01:46Speaker 1: its language. And I mean Janice Jr. Yanka, I mean,
- 2:01:53Speaker 1: he was born in the States, his dad was born
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: in the States, but still speaks Fian And I think
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: that that seems rare that that would still that would happen, right.
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: A lot of a lot of second generation immigrants sort
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: of uh have a really tough relationship with their um
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: first language. I think just because of trying to assimilate uh.
- 2:02:21Speaker 1: So to see to see Yanka and kind of embrace
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: speaking Latvian, it's just it's I feel like I'm jealous
- 2:02:29Speaker 1: in some ways. It's such a cool thing to be
- 2:02:32Speaker 1: able to have your your guy's own like I don't know,
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: a little incret, secret, freaking coded, ancient, unrelated language. It's
- 2:02:44Speaker 1: weird to listen to because they'll be doing their thing
- 2:02:47Speaker 1: and then like an English word will pop up in
- 2:02:49Speaker 1: the middle of a sentence and it just sounds wrong.
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: Copy and then Latin. Yeah, yeah, so I just enjoyed.
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: I didn't enjoyed the whole The whole deal was good.
- 2:03:05Speaker 1: What was the charm you were given? Steve? Oh? Yeah,
- 2:03:08Speaker 1: can you tell that that secret charm? Well, it's not
- 2:03:11Speaker 1: a secret charm, it's just a well known charm. It's
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: actually or whatever it is. I didn't tell you the
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: full story. I thought. I didn't want to spoil it
- 2:03:19Speaker 1: for just don't tell a story. Just blessed this here
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: beer bottle or not blessed, but whatever it was, And
- 2:03:25Speaker 1: I can't do that with a beer bottle, not the
- 2:03:28Speaker 1: it's it's the mystique. Could you tell people? Would you
- 2:03:31Speaker 1: mind telling listeners what it was? The incant whatever? Yeah?
- 2:03:35Speaker 1: I just the words you uttered when when when giving
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: my when setting things in moment. But I have to
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: do the whole thing. But I have to tell you
- 2:03:43Speaker 1: this what it is that I told? Yeah, I will,
- 2:03:46Speaker 1: I will know. So this incantation is nothing more than
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: a little ditty that you use with small children that
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: when you're deciding which one is it. So it was like,
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: thank good dank coold really do bricks. So now you
- 2:04:12Speaker 1: because I mean believer out of you for that moment,
- 2:04:19Speaker 1: I changed your acceptance of that and you you believed it.
- 2:04:27Speaker 1: You were right there, man, because you have you do
- 2:04:28Speaker 1: it twice. You remember when he said did you crosswater?
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: You're like, He's like, oh God, you crosswater right washed
- 2:04:41Speaker 1: it away. So I don't care. You want to you
- 2:04:45Speaker 1: want to put that. I mean there's a lot of
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: in that context. You get it. So if I make
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: a book and say this is the book of you,
- 2:04:53Speaker 1: honest man, this is the way you gotta do it.
- 2:04:55Speaker 1: If you're a believer, you're gonna do it that way,
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: i'd priority concluding thoughts. Yeah, obviously this whole things about Alaska.
- 2:05:07Speaker 1: And when people talk about Alaska, they talk about it
- 2:05:10Speaker 1: as this like all encompassing, like umbrella kind of word.
- 2:05:17Speaker 1: And my experience with Alaska up until this point was
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: at your cabin in southeast Alaska, which couldn't be more
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: different from where we were in the Alaska Range. And
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: like it's almost a disservice to say I went to
- 2:05:33Speaker 1: Alaska because people just get whatever they're gonna get in
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: their heads. Some some nature documentary about Denali or whatever.
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: And Alaska has like I don't know how many, like
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: Southeast Alaska, Interior Alaska, Arctic Alaska, and it's just big. Yeah.
- 2:05:53Speaker 1: And so it's so different to the Yeah, and it
- 2:05:58Speaker 1: was amazing to see that that different friends experience. It
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: makes you want to see different more different places going Alaska.
- 2:06:06Speaker 1: Do you had a good time? Hell? Yeah, Yeah, it
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: was impressive, even though you know he passed up on
- 2:06:16Speaker 1: all three times. Uh My concluding thought it kind of
- 2:06:23Speaker 1: has to do with fathers and sons. We just talked
- 2:06:25Speaker 1: about this R day and I can't get it out
- 2:06:27Speaker 1: of my head. It's not something that I came up with.
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: But mo Um, who we work with quite a bit
- 2:06:32Speaker 1: over the years, was was talking about having kids and
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: he was saying that how when you have kids, and
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: he has young kids, they're my kids ages. He's like,
- 2:06:45Speaker 1: when you have kids, all you wish upon them is
- 2:06:47Speaker 1: that they'd be happy, you know, and you don't, like
- 2:06:52Speaker 1: he said, he was talking about how you don't spell
- 2:06:54Speaker 1: it out. You don't spell out like oh I wanted to,
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: you know. He's just like, no, just it's just that,
- 2:06:59Speaker 1: like that's all I is one gonna be happy whatever
- 2:07:02Speaker 1: that means for them, you know, and then later in life,
- 2:07:06Speaker 1: you know, later life, when you're when you're looking at
- 2:07:08Speaker 1: your own life, you get into all these specifics, like
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: you want if you don't want this truck, I want
- 2:07:13Speaker 1: this house, all these specific things you want, and you
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: lose started that original idea that you would have upon
- 2:07:20Speaker 1: your own children, be like, oh, I just want them
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: to be happy. It's just you don't talk about you
- 2:07:25Speaker 1: don't use that term anymore. You know, you're something like
- 2:07:28Speaker 1: things that will write. But you're saying that now that
- 2:07:31Speaker 1: he knows, that's just the side note to where he's
- 2:07:32Speaker 1: the point he's making with me that's really stuck with me.
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: You're saying that now that he has kids and he
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: knows how badly he wants his kids to just be happy,
- 2:07:44Speaker 1: He's like, oh, now I understand how my parents must
- 2:07:48Speaker 1: have felt, right. They must have just looked at me
- 2:07:53Speaker 1: and all they ever wanted was for me to be happy.
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: And he was saying, and now I'm at a point
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: in life we're I am. It's like, and I'm gonna
- 2:08:03Speaker 1: make a point to go and say, you know what,
- 2:08:07Speaker 1: I'm happy because now that I'm a parent, I realized
- 2:08:10Speaker 1: how much that probably means to you, you know, got
- 2:08:14Speaker 1: it because it's an interesting observation. He's like, that's the
- 2:08:18Speaker 1: least I could do for my parents is to let
- 2:08:20Speaker 1: them know that the thing they obsessed over all through
- 2:08:23Speaker 1: bringing me up has come true. It's like they did it,
- 2:08:27Speaker 1: you know. So you bring up an interesting questions and
- 2:08:30Speaker 1: that question is very obvious to me. Did your father
- 2:08:33Speaker 1: ever know about your finding your happiness right? And that's
- 2:08:38Speaker 1: probably your biggest regret is that, Yeah, I have a
- 2:08:41Speaker 1: million regrets, man, millions of No, it's probably not a million,
- 2:08:44Speaker 1: but I had a shipload of regrets. Uh No, because
- 2:08:48Speaker 1: I wasn't I was. I was in Um I took
- 2:08:53Speaker 1: at that period, I had in my head something I
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: wanted to do and it and it was it seemed
- 2:09:00Speaker 1: like a moon shot. It seemed impossible. So I think
- 2:09:03Speaker 1: he saw me. Um, he definitely saw me struggling towards
- 2:09:08Speaker 1: something that was that I thought was impossible, and he
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: was very encouraging that I go and do it. Never
- 2:09:14Speaker 1: put anything oh my parents, listen, that's good. My mom,
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: uh my mom. My dad never laid any bullshit on
- 2:09:23Speaker 1: any of us about you need to do this and
- 2:09:26Speaker 1: you need to do that. And that's you're just dreaming
- 2:09:29Speaker 1: and that's not how the real nothing like that. Ever,
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: They're like, you gotta find something you love to do
- 2:09:37Speaker 1: and go do it. My mom was always the encourager
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: and the dad said, now you need to go, Yeah,
- 2:09:42Speaker 1: you need to be a doctor. My mom and dad
- 2:09:44Speaker 1: never laid any of that bullshit on us. Ever. My
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: dad think always said this is that you're gonna spend
- 2:09:49Speaker 1: the third year life working. He was actually off, I
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: feel like I spent a lot more than that. He said,
- 2:09:53Speaker 1: you just spent a third year life working. You better
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: do something you like. Correct. That was the only career
- 2:09:59Speaker 1: advice he ever gave, But he gave it adamantly, and
- 2:10:02Speaker 1: the same thing like, you know, we never heard from
- 2:10:04Speaker 1: our folks, you know, and you know my mom thankfully,
- 2:10:08Speaker 1: I'm still talking to my mom and she's you know, ever,
- 2:10:11Speaker 1: never just like, do stuff you like, find a way
- 2:10:14Speaker 1: to take what you like and make it pay. The
- 2:10:17Speaker 1: advice I give out now when I give out, if
- 2:10:19Speaker 1: I have a chance to give advice out to people,
- 2:10:21Speaker 1: which comes up now, and then I'm always like, man,
