- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Monday.
- 0:16It is the 1st of January 2024. Welcome to this New Year.
- 0:23It is great that you and I get to share this time together at
- 0:28the start of a new year. And what a year we have planned,
- 0:34friend. We are going to cover some
- 0:36serious headway into the Bible. This year we have got books of
- 0:41Samuel and Kings, but we're also going to read a couple of
- 0:43Gospels and Acts and some of their favorite epistles from the
- 0:47New Testament. It is going to be a glorious
- 0:51year. In February we will release all
- 0:54of the readings for the year, but trust me, it is going to be
- 0:58a glorious year in God's Word where we will engage in some of
- 1:03our favorite stories from the Old Testament, some of our
- 1:06favorite moments from the New Testament, and of course we are
- 1:10also not. Of course we are also.
- 1:13I'm going to be reading some books of poetry and wisdom.
- 1:16Ah, it is going to be glorious. And I'm so glad that you can
- 1:21join me. Or I can join you in whatever is
- 1:25happening in the year ahead. I wish you a wonderful year
- 1:29filled with so many good things. I'm sure life will have its UPS
- 1:33and its downs and its challenges, and it's tears and
- 1:36it's laughter. But let us, you and I, as we
- 1:41make all sorts of New Year's resolutions, let us plan that
- 1:47through it all, each day we will come before our incredible God
- 1:53and we will hear God's Word speaking into our life.
- 1:56And that the Holy Spirit will breathe life into this
- 1:59commitment. And this time and that we will
- 2:02hear the voice of God speaking clearly and boldly into our
- 2:07daily life. Isn't that the greatest way to
- 2:11start the new year? I reckon that's pretty sparky.
- 2:15So let's do it. Let us start this 1st of January
- 2:19by reading the next chapter of the book of First Samuel.
- 2:23And this is a sad one. This is where it all goes very,
- 2:27very wrong. Israel loses the Ark of the
- 2:31Covenant. How could that even happen?
- 2:34And then Eli and his sons meet their end.
- 2:39Yep, it's a big one. So join me, friends, as we put
- 2:42down all that waits for us today and read together First Samuel
- 2:48Chapter 4, and Samuel's words went out to all the people of
- 2:58Israel. At that time, Israel was at war
- 3:01with the Philistines. The Israelite army was camped
- 3:05near Ebenezer and the Philistines were at AFEC.
- 3:10The Philistines attacked and defeated the army of Israel,
- 3:13killing 4000 men. After the battle was over, the
- 3:18troops retreated to their camp and the elders of Israel asked
- 3:23why did the Lord allow us to be defeated by the Philistines.
- 3:28Then they said let's bring the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord
- 3:32from Shiloh. If we carry it into battle with
- 3:35us, it will save us from our enemies.
- 3:40So they sent men to Shiloh to bring the ark of the covenant of
- 3:43the Lord of Heaven's armies, who was enthroned between the
- 3:46cherubim Hofny and Phineas. The sons of Eli were also there
- 3:52with the ark of the covenant of God.
- 3:55When all the Israelites saw the ark of the covenant of the Lord
- 3:58coming into the camp, their shout of joy was so loud it made
- 4:03the ground shake. What's going on?
- 4:06The Philistines asked what's all the shouting about in the Hebrew
- 4:10camp. When they were told it was
- 4:13because the Ark of the Lord had arrived, they panicked.
- 4:17The gods have come into their camp.
- 4:19They cried. This is a disaster.
- 4:22We have never had to face anything like this before.
- 4:25Help. Who can save us from these
- 4:28mighty gods of Israel? They are the same gods who
- 4:31destroyed the Egyptians with plagues when Israel was in the
- 4:34wilderness. Fighters never before
- 4:37Philistines. If you don't, we will become the
- 4:41Hebrew slaves, just as they have been.
- 4:44Ours stand up like men and fight.
- 4:48So the Philistines fought desperately and Israel was
- 4:53defeated again. The slaughter was great. 30,000
- 4:58Israelite soldiers died that day.
- 5:01The survivors turned and fled to their tents.
- 5:05The Ark of God was captured, and Hofny and Phineas, the two sons
- 5:11of Eli, were killed. A man from the tribe of Benjamin
- 5:16ran from the battlefield and arrived at Shiloh later that
- 5:20same day. He had torn his clothes and put
- 5:23dust on his head to show his grief.
- 5:26Eli was waiting beside the road to hear the news of the battle,
- 5:30for his heart trembled for the safety of the Ark of God.
- 5:35When the messenger arrived and told what had happened, an
- 5:39outcry resounded throughout the town.
- 5:42What is all the noise about? Eli asked.
- 5:46The messenger rushed over to Eli, who was 98 years old and
- 5:51blind. He said to Eli, I have just come
- 5:55from the battlefield. I was there this very day.
- 5:59What happened? My son Eli demanded.
- 6:04Israel has been defeated by the Philistines, the messenger
- 6:08replied. The people have been
- 6:10slaughtered, and your two sons, Hofny and Phineas, were also
- 6:14killed. And the Ark of God has been
- 6:17captured. When the Messenger mentioned
- 6:21what had happened to the Ark of God, Eli fell backward from his
- 6:25seat beside the gate. He broke his neck and died for
- 6:31he was old and overweight. He had been Israel's judge for
- 6:3540 years. Eli's daughter-in-law, the wife
- 6:40of Phineas, was pregnant and near her time of delivery.
- 6:45When she heard that the Ark of God had been captured and that
- 6:48her father-in-law and husband were dead, she went into labor
- 6:53and gave birth. She died in childbirth, but
- 6:57before she passed away, the midwives tried to encourage her.
- 7:02Don't be afraid, They said you have a baby boy, but she did not
- 7:07answer or pay attention to them. She named the child Ichabod,
- 7:12which means where is the Glory? For she said Israel's glory is
- 7:18gone. She named him this because the
- 7:22Ark of God had been captured and because her father-in-law and
- 7:25husband were dead. Then she said, the Glory has
- 7:29departed from Israel, for the Ark of God has been captured.
- 7:45Lord, you are bigger than our human minds can comprehend.
- 7:51And when we feel like we're in situations where you and your
- 7:55will have been defeated, Lord, that is never the case.
- 8:01You are bigger than any circumstance that we might face,
- 8:06or we might experience or we might interpret or believe that
- 8:10may have defeated you or your plans.
- 8:12But there is no defeat in your plans, for you are sovereign
- 8:17over all, and your plans always, always win out.
- 8:25Father, thank you that you are so much greater than anything
- 8:30that this world may have to throw at you.
- 8:33Throw at your Kingdom or your followers.
- 8:38Help us always know that you, He who is in US, is greater than He
- 8:44who is in the world. You are our mighty, mighty,
- 8:50loving Savior God, and we rest in that knowledge and in your
- 8:57care. And we can pray all of these
- 9:00things through the saving name of your son Jesus.
- 9:05Amen.
