- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to Bill Handle on demand from KFI AM
- 0:04Speaker 1: six forty.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I AM six forty. Bill Handle here Tuesday morning at
- 0:16Speaker 2: Taco Tuesday, August eighteenth, coming up at eight o'clock, top
- 0:21Speaker 2: of the hour.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It's a rich tomorrow.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Okay, some of the big stories that we are covering. Well,
- 0:32Speaker 2: For one thing, that sixty day period of the truce
- 0:35Speaker 2: is over, and so let me deal with that for
- 0:39Speaker 2: a moment. So sixty days ago, and this was at
- 0:45Speaker 2: the Palace of Versailles, sitting next to French President Macron,
- 0:50Speaker 2: the president, our president signed a memorandum understanding with Iran
- 0:55Speaker 2: and declared the beginning of the end of the US
- 0:58Speaker 2: conflict with Iran. It was a historic break, that's the quote,
- 1:02Speaker 2: and would lead to the reopening of the Strait of
- 1:04Speaker 2: Hormuz and make sure that Iran never obtained a nuclear weapon.
- 1:09Speaker 2: That was the White House declaration, and that agreement sixty
- 1:13Speaker 2: days ago set aside sixty days for talks turn to
- 1:17Speaker 2: turn the interim truce into something much broader, a permanent
- 1:22Speaker 2: truce where everybody sort of agrees, well, that sixty day
- 1:26Speaker 2: window is not closed and the war certainly hasn't ended.
- 1:30Speaker 2: The Strait of Hormuz remains closed. For the most part,
- 1:34Speaker 2: negotiations over the nuclear program of Iran never even began.
- 1:39Speaker 2: The United States has resumed its blockade of the Iranian ports.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Tehran is demanding concessions that the Trump administration is not
- 1:47Speaker 2: about to give and is rejected. The administration has now
- 1:52Speaker 2: publicly disavowed several of the key points that it made
- 1:57Speaker 2: in that memorandum. For example, in the memorandum was a
- 2:02Speaker 2: statement that there to be a development development of a
- 2:07Speaker 2: plan with at least three hundred billion dollars for the
- 2:10Speaker 2: reconstruction and development of Iran.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Gone.
- 2:13Speaker 2: A waiver of sanctions to allow Iran to sell oil
- 2:17Speaker 2: that happened for a little bit of time a few
- 2:21Speaker 2: weeks ago, where I think maybe for a week two
- 2:23Speaker 2: weeks Iran was allowed to sell oil. The United States
- 2:27Speaker 2: allowed it to do so. And now that window is closed.
- 2:30Speaker 2: So Iran is back to selling oil on the black market,
- 2:34Speaker 2: which it had for years. And there was to be
- 2:38Speaker 2: a dialogue between Iran and Oman over how to run
- 2:41Speaker 2: the Strait of Hormuz. Well that sort of ended. As
- 2:44Speaker 2: a matter of fact, yesterday the President threatened to bomb
- 2:47Speaker 2: Oman over its talks with Iran over the potential management
- 2:51Speaker 2: of the Strait of Hormuz. In an interview with Fox yesterday,
- 2:56Speaker 2: the President said, if Aman gets in the way, the
- 3:00Speaker 2: US would bomb the s out of them. Now, CNN,
- 3:04Speaker 2: by the way, it says all the fun words. You
- 3:06Speaker 2: know that, because it's not controlled by the FCC, it
- 3:09Speaker 2: can say and does say all the efplatives we can't.
- 3:13Speaker 2: The President demanded that Iran raise the white flag of surrender.
- 3:18Speaker 2: And what's interesting is that the President has basically disavowed
- 3:24Speaker 2: any connection with the midterms, and he has said, neither
- 3:28Speaker 2: the midterms election coming up, nor the passage of time.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Remember there was a timeline here supposed to be sixty days.
- 3:36Speaker 2: We have to get moving on this. All of a
- 3:37Speaker 2: sudden that's gone. He says, I have no time schedule.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I'm not in a hurry. Midterms have nothing to do
- 3:44Speaker 2: with my thinking. Now, that's kind of interesting. How many
- 3:47Speaker 2: times have we heard if they don't come to the
- 3:49Speaker 2: table in three days, we're going to bomb the hell
- 3:51Speaker 2: out of them. If they don't open the streets within
- 3:55Speaker 2: a week, I'm going to bomb the hell out of him.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I don't know how many times he has made pronouncement
- 4:00Speaker 2: and given timelines that have just disappeared. So at least
- 4:04Speaker 2: now we're getting a realistic time schedule from the president.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I have no time schedule, is what he said. I'm
- 4:12Speaker 2: not in a hurry. Midterms have nothing to do with
- 4:17Speaker 2: my thinking. We'll talk to a few Republicans out there
- 4:21Speaker 2: in swing districts and swing states that we have an
- 4:24Speaker 2: issue with that. During the sixty days, as things were
- 4:27Speaker 2: not happening, the President said over and over again, We're
- 4:31Speaker 2: going to bomb or I'm going to bomb Tehran. They've
- 4:33Speaker 2: gotten till Wednesday, they have until tomorrow afternoon. They have
- 4:37Speaker 2: until next week to come to the table, and if
- 4:39Speaker 2: they don't, I'm going to bomb the crap out of them.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I'm going to put him into the Stone Age. I mean,
- 4:45Speaker 2: I don't said that, but he said obliterate their entire civilization.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Of course, none of that happened. So now it's okay.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Now I have no time schedule at all. I'm not
- 4:59Speaker 2: in a hurr And politically, midterms have nothing to do
- 5:03Speaker 2: with my thinking. Now that I don't know about, because
- 5:08Speaker 2: here we are six months after that initial attack on
- 5:11Speaker 2: Iran with Israel, seventy eight days before the elections, and
- 5:17Speaker 2: the control of Congress and the Senate is sort of
- 5:20Speaker 2: up in the air right now, and Trump is looking
- 5:24Speaker 2: at you know, you know, people that are upset about
- 5:28Speaker 2: the possibility of open end conflicts that he said he was.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Not going to I have.
- 5:33Speaker 2: That was one of his platforms, that was one of
- 5:36Speaker 2: his platform conditions, his promises, no ever ending war. Remember
- 5:40Speaker 2: this war was going to go from four to six weeks.
- 5:42Speaker 2: That's done. Also, all of the reasons why we went
- 5:47Speaker 2: to war, other than the nuclear program, the enrichment program
- 5:51Speaker 2: that Iran has, that's all disappeared. I mean, you don't
- 5:55Speaker 2: hear anything about it. Marco Rubio when he said it's
- 5:59Speaker 2: regime change that we're looking for. We are looking to
- 6:03Speaker 2: open the straight of horror moves. That is critical because
- 6:07Speaker 2: immediately the strait of hor moves was closed by Iran.
- 6:11Speaker 2: And so at this point, no obviously military resolution, no
- 6:16Speaker 2: diplomatic breakthrough in sight, and mounting economic and political costs
- 6:21Speaker 2: at home. Well, here is what the United States is
- 6:24Speaker 2: betting on. And this is all now. It's a time issue.
- 6:28Speaker 1: That's it. There's nothing really more or less.
- 6:32Speaker 2: And the US is betting that Iran will collapse before
- 6:38Speaker 2: the political outrage because becomes so overwhelming for Trump and
- 6:43Speaker 2: the Republicans that it becomes untenable and in the midterms
- 6:48Speaker 2: wiped out, the Republicans get wiped out, possibility, and he
- 6:54Speaker 2: is not helping the Republicans, saying midterms have nothing to
- 6:57Speaker 2: do with my thinking. Basically, I don't care about what's
- 7:00Speaker 2: happening with midterms. That's a problem now for voters. For us,
- 7:06Speaker 2: the war in Iran is linked to the economy. That's
- 7:08Speaker 2: really where we're at. This is where Trump won. He said,
- 7:12Speaker 2: look at the inflation under Biden. Biden has ruined the economy.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Look at how much more you're paying. Well, guess what,
- 7:18Speaker 2: look at how much more you're paying. Inflation is back.
- 7:22Speaker 2: The President first of all said that prices on gasoline were.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Lower while they were going up. Huh.
- 7:30Speaker 2: And then he came back and said, well, we're paying
- 7:33Speaker 2: a little bit more.
- 7:34Speaker 1: For gasolene, but it's worth the price.
- 7:38Speaker 2: And so the Republicans are looking at saying that, you know,
- 7:43Speaker 2: a lot of what Trump was elected on seems not
- 7:47Speaker 2: to be fulfilled. Also coming up with the rationale for
- 7:51Speaker 2: why we went in the first place, and no clear
- 7:55Speaker 2: sense of how it's going and no indication of how
- 7:58Speaker 2: we're going to get out to the president.
- 8:01Speaker 1: To many people, certainly.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Israelis, the thought of Iran having a nuclear weapon is
- 8:06Speaker 2: anethna makes sense.
- 8:08Speaker 1: How close were they under Obama? There were international.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Observers that were there making sure Iran didn't go forward.
- 8:19Speaker 2: And remember the President pulled us out and during his
- 8:23Speaker 2: first term saying the Obama deal was the worst deal
- 8:25Speaker 2: in the history of the United States. Well, right now
- 8:28Speaker 2: we have no deal. Iran immediately went to enriching and
- 8:32Speaker 2: now the issue becomes it almost it doesn't matter what
- 8:35Speaker 2: it cost us. We cannot have Iran become a nuclear power.
- 8:39Speaker 2: We're starting to sound like Israel. And so what's going
- 8:44Speaker 2: to happen, Well, it's going to yea, the midterms are
- 8:46Speaker 2: going to happen, and we'll see. And in the meantime,
- 8:49Speaker 2: do you know that the last aircraft carriers being pulled
- 8:52Speaker 2: from the Pacific and over into the Mediterranean, the United
- 8:56Speaker 2: States will have no aircraft carriers in the Pacific theater.
- 9:01Speaker 2: I don't remember when that has happened. And here's the
- 9:06Speaker 2: Chinese with Taiwan. There's a lot of moving pieces here.
- 9:10Speaker 2: The Chinese threatening constantly to take back Taiwan, and we
- 9:15Speaker 2: were one of the defenders of Taiwan.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Now do we go to war? We have a treaty,
- 9:21Speaker 1: but it doesn't matter. Do we go to war.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Well, the Chinese are looking at the big player of
- 9:26Speaker 2: the United States removing its big guns, as in the
- 9:30Speaker 2: aircraft carriers.
- 9:33Speaker 1: So it's a question of time. Who's going to win.
- 9:36Speaker 2: The United States is guessing that Iran is going to
- 9:38Speaker 2: k first because the economy is so bad in Iran,
- 9:43Speaker 2: the currency is falling to nothing, inflation is crazy. But
- 9:49Speaker 2: I think the United States. My thoughts, and of course
- 9:52Speaker 2: I'm the vast expert on this, is that Iranian leadership,
- 9:56Speaker 2: the Revolutionary Guard, is perfectly willing to let people starve
- 10:01Speaker 2: as long as they stay in control and as long
- 10:03Speaker 2: as they don't say yes to the United States.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Perfectly okay with that.
- 10:07Speaker 2: And if there is any kind of an uproar, if
- 10:10Speaker 2: there's any kind of an uprising, everybody gets shot. Revolutionary
- 10:16Speaker 2: Reguard has no problem mowing down fifty thousand people. You know,
- 10:22Speaker 2: the descent has stopped. There is no such thing as dissent. Well,
- 10:26Speaker 2: there's plenty of political outcome when it comes to what
- 10:30Speaker 2: the president does. I mean here there is accountability, and
- 10:35Speaker 2: the accountability is in the courts one. And the real
- 10:39Speaker 2: accountability is during election cycles. And we're going to see
- 10:43Speaker 2: what happens in November seventy eight days. And right now
- 10:47Speaker 2: we are in that quagmire. That's what's being used to
- 10:51Speaker 2: describe where the president is right now, a quagmire.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Does he go full blame, full blown war? My god?
- 10:59Speaker 2: What does he do with that? What does Iran do?
- 11:02Speaker 2: Does it attack the United States?
- 11:03Speaker 1: Of course not?
- 11:04Speaker 2: Does the attack American interests in the Gulf, you bet
- 11:06Speaker 2: it does. Is it attack shipping, you bet it does.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Does it attack what quote are its allies in the
- 11:13Speaker 2: mid East of various countries around Iran? You bet it does.
- 11:17Speaker 2: So Now what does the president do? No easy answer
- 11:21Speaker 2: here at all. All Right, Prediction market platforms those are
- 11:27Speaker 2: fairly new, and you gamble on where you predict and
- 11:32Speaker 2: you bet on stuff that's going to happen, and some stuff, well,
- 11:37Speaker 2: sports betting, I mean gambling forever on the sports. I mean,
- 11:41Speaker 2: how many football pools are there out during the Super Bowl?
- 11:46Speaker 2: You know, for example, it is illegal, you know that
- 11:48Speaker 2: to bet on Super Bowl and the police should be
- 11:51Speaker 2: out and arresting people, but they're too busy betting on
- 11:55Speaker 2: the Super Bowl at the precinct. But that's easy. Also
- 12:04Speaker 2: easy to bet who's going to win during an election. Okay,
- 12:08Speaker 2: that makes fun. But as the letter, but has ever
- 12:10Speaker 2: crossed the line? Yeah, in polymarket, which is considered itself
- 12:17Speaker 2: the largest platform for predicting global events, what it did
- 12:22Speaker 2: is allow betting on the wildfires here in Los Angeles.
- 12:29Speaker 2: How fast would the fire grow, how long would it
- 12:33Speaker 2: take to contain the fires? How much would be destroyed?
- 12:38Speaker 2: Now that had people going big time, And there are
- 12:42Speaker 2: folks that are saying, okay, now we have an ethical line,
- 12:46Speaker 2: and there seems to be a pretty clear line of
- 12:48Speaker 2: which these are prediction markets seem to be bouncing back
- 12:53Speaker 2: and forth on one of them certainly is fires. The
- 12:57Speaker 2: other one is insider trading. You can't predict even if
- 13:02Speaker 2: you have insider trading another way of getting money from
- 13:07Speaker 2: insider training, and not just to trade to get stocks
- 13:10Speaker 2: and traded and trade, because there you've got Securities Exchange
- 13:13Speaker 2: Commission all over the place looking at it.
- 13:16Speaker 1: But this is just prediction markets.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Are they controlled, well, they sort of are controlled. There
- 13:24Speaker 2: is something called the CFTC, which stands.
- 13:28Speaker 1: For let me get this right. I don't want to
- 13:30Speaker 1: get that wrong.
- 13:32Speaker 2: It stands for CFTC, which loosely controls prediction markets.
- 13:39Speaker 1: But it's very loose and so here's what happens.
- 13:43Speaker 2: You can buy shares of one answer or another, yes
- 13:47Speaker 2: or no, and the shares costs moves up and down
- 13:51Speaker 2: as the predictions flow in. Basically is this gambling and
- 13:54Speaker 2: sports gambling. Betters are winning determined by odds, and that
- 14:00Speaker 2: changes minute to minute depending on who bets on one
- 14:03Speaker 2: team or another. Well, the same thing happens here. This
- 14:06Speaker 2: is predicated on the number of people who are betting. Yes,
- 14:09Speaker 2: here's how far the fires are going to go, or no,
- 14:13Speaker 2: they're not going to be that way, And it depends
- 14:15Speaker 2: on who's betting one way or the other and the number.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Of people betting.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Here is the question, though, if you're betting on natural disasters,
- 14:22Speaker 2: that's the big one. Does that incentifize incentifize you to, Oh,
- 14:27Speaker 2: I don't know, commit arson, where's the fire going to start? Well,
- 14:31Speaker 2: I'm betting it's going to start over in that section
- 14:34Speaker 2: of town, in that warehouse. And you'd win the bet,
- 14:39Speaker 2: wouldn't you. Now, it's so far there's been no evidence
- 14:43Speaker 2: that that has happened. But you've got some people upset
- 14:47Speaker 2: You've got a bunch of senators, including the two in California,
- 14:50Speaker 2: Padilla and Schiff, who have written a letter to the government,
- 14:55Speaker 2: to the CFTC to say, we've got to stop this.
- 14:59Speaker 2: We have to stop this because I mean, the thought
- 15:02Speaker 2: of committing crimes bet on the premise that crimes are
- 15:06Speaker 2: going to be committed. Yeah, I have a problem with that.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Betting on sports, I don't care betting on when Taylor
- 15:14Speaker 2: Swift is going to get pregnant. By the way, there
- 15:16Speaker 2: are five hundred questions on Taylor Swift when she's going
- 15:19Speaker 2: to get pregnant, How she's going to get pregnant, stooping. Okay,
- 15:22Speaker 2: but where, what's the name of the kid? Well, okay,
- 15:28Speaker 2: But she can bet on that because she controls it. Right,
- 15:31Speaker 2: you can have insider betting on that, and that's illegal
- 15:34Speaker 2: if you know, and it's not a prediction.
- 15:37Speaker 1: That is a legitimate prediction that you don't control. Okay,
- 15:42Speaker 1: but I don't know. I'm not a big gambler.
- 15:46Speaker 2: When I go to Las Vegas, I will not put
- 15:48Speaker 2: a quarter into a slot machine.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Not a quarter.
- 15:52Speaker 2: And why because when I lose that quarter, I get
- 15:56Speaker 2: so depressed I want to jump off a building. When
- 15:58Speaker 2: I win some money on that quarter, I know I'm
- 16:01Speaker 2: going to lose it next time. So to me, it's
- 16:04Speaker 2: a lose lose proposition. Okay, we're done with that. Well,
- 16:10Speaker 2: no surprise, but the Disney folks have filed a lawsuit
- 16:14Speaker 2: against the federal government and against the FCC Federal Communications Commission,
- 16:20Speaker 2: specifically because the FCC has now asked ABC to well,
- 16:28Speaker 2: it is going against FCC and asking them to renew
- 16:32Speaker 2: their license there well, to redo their license renewal. Every
- 16:36Speaker 2: eight years the government, the FCC grants licenses for broadcast television. Now,
- 16:43Speaker 2: the last time the FCC has actually done it in
- 16:48Speaker 2: the middle of an eight year term was decades and
- 16:51Speaker 2: decades ago. And so the ABC said straight out, the
- 16:57Speaker 2: administration has waged retaliatory campaign against ABC for a single
- 17:03Speaker 2: reason it disapproves of what ABC broadcasts.
- 17:08Speaker 1: And this comes right in line with.
- 17:10Speaker 2: The FCC investigating the ABC talk show The View, and
- 17:16Speaker 2: so therefore it's mounting the challenge to the licenses held
- 17:19Speaker 2: by ABC stations. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, first of all,
- 17:25Speaker 2: he's scrutinized Disney on several fronts, including DEI, saying that
- 17:30Speaker 2: DEI is discriminatory and illegal on his face, and Carr
- 17:35Speaker 2: has said that Disney might be committing illegal DEI discrimination. Now,
- 17:40Speaker 2: Car's critics, and there are lots of them, have said
- 17:43Speaker 2: that the DEI argument is a laughable pretext for what
- 17:47Speaker 2: really is happening. What's happening is political pressure from the president.
- 17:52Speaker 2: The President has gone after ABC big time denounced the
- 17:55Speaker 2: network's reporters last April. If you remember the Jimmy Kimmel
- 18:00Speaker 2: incident where Kimmel made actually not even a joke a statement.
- 18:04Speaker 1: About the killing of Charlie Kirk.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Trump pressured ABC to fire Kimmel straight out and he
- 18:12Speaker 2: was off the air for a week, but ABC brought
- 18:14Speaker 2: him back and after that Car order the network to
- 18:18Speaker 2: file this early renewal paperwork for his station licenses. Now,
- 18:23Speaker 2: he said that the timing was completely coincidental. One have
- 18:28Speaker 2: nothing to do with the other. But come on, do
- 18:33Speaker 2: you even doubt that as government retaliation? As a matter
- 18:35Speaker 2: of fact, even the people that are Trump's supporters know
- 18:39Speaker 2: that is that it's retaliation. And this has to do
- 18:44Speaker 2: and I love this. One of the actions against ABC
- 18:49Speaker 2: is that one of the actions that have been taken
- 18:52Speaker 2: against ABC is that Car arguing that the Trump administration
- 18:58Speaker 2: number one will within its rights. It's not in the
- 19:01Speaker 2: public interest for ABC to operate as an arm of
- 19:04Speaker 2: the DNC, which A car Ally has said, President of
- 19:09Speaker 2: the Center for American Rights, And it is totally coincidental,
- 19:15Speaker 2: and so ABC now the view is basically a bunch
- 19:20Speaker 2: of women sitting around and nailing Trump on a regular basis.
- 19:26Speaker 2: I am thrilled that the president and the FCC is
- 19:30Speaker 2: at least being fair going after the Five, which is
- 19:34Speaker 2: the conservative group of people who are on Fox that
- 19:40Speaker 2: defend the president. Oh oh no, I got that wrong.
- 19:44Speaker 2: They're not going after the Five. They're not They're not
- 19:48Speaker 2: going after any Fox stations. But it's totally coincidental that
- 19:53Speaker 2: they are going after the network that allows and actually
- 19:58Speaker 2: has on it the anti Trump group, but the pro
- 20:01Speaker 2: Trump group. And they're arguing the equal protection or the
- 20:05Speaker 2: equal I'm sorry what I called the equals sticky? Oh god,
- 20:11Speaker 2: I keep on forgetting that one. Well time, that's it
- 20:14Speaker 2: equal time rule.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Thank you?
- 20:16Speaker 2: I get paid for this. Do you know that it's
- 20:18Speaker 2: a scary concept, the equal time rule. It's on the books,
- 20:22Speaker 2: and what it says is that if one political statement
- 20:25Speaker 2: is made or one political view is made, you have
- 20:29Speaker 2: to give equal time to the other side. It has
- 20:31Speaker 2: not been used in decades, well actually many years. That
- 20:36Speaker 2: has disappeared. However, they're bringing it back, but only against
- 20:40Speaker 2: those stations and those networks that are anti Trump. If
- 20:44Speaker 2: you're pro Trump, don't worry about equal time. It is
- 20:49Speaker 2: so hypocritical on its face, and the government, particularly Brendan Carr,
- 20:55Speaker 2: has said, it's completely coincidental that we're going only after
- 21:00Speaker 2: ABC because of THEI rules. Okay, It's just it's breathtaking
- 21:08Speaker 2: how the government could look at you in the face
- 21:11Speaker 2: and say, look out of the sky, sun is out there.
- 21:14Speaker 2: But Trump says it's raining. You know what that means.
- 21:17Speaker 2: It's raining. That means you're going out and you put
- 21:23Speaker 2: on rain gear and you bring out your umbrella and
- 21:25Speaker 2: the sun is out in this eighty seven degrees outside.
- 21:28Speaker 2: The President has said it, Brendan Carr has said it,
- 21:32Speaker 2: the administration has said it. And by the way, it's
