Latest / Bucco Territory: A Pittsburgh Pirates Podcast / Could Paul Skenes actually be human?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, everybody?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome back to another episode of Bucco Territory, presented to
- 0:13Speaker 2: you by the Foul Territory Network of Noah Hiles. Joining
- 0:16Speaker 2: me as always are my co hosts Josh Harrison, Akajy
- 0:20Speaker 2: and Platinum Key aka Mark. We were recording this on
- 0:23Speaker 2: Thursday afternoon before the Pirates concluded their three game series
- 0:30Speaker 2: in Houston, so it's fresh off of Wednesday night's ugly defeat.
- 0:36Speaker 1: So who knows what happens Thursday.
- 0:38Speaker 2: The bullpen could come in and you know, they say,
- 0:41Speaker 2: Jared goes two innings. The bullpen could come in and
- 0:42Speaker 2: Thirsty seven shot out. I don't know if I would
- 0:45Speaker 2: expect that because it has been a mess. We're gonna
- 0:48Speaker 2: talk about that. We're gonna talk about Paul Skeins as well,
- 0:50Speaker 2: how he's kind of been human as of late, and
- 0:53Speaker 2: then we will round out our show as we do
- 0:56Speaker 2: on every Friday show, with our weekly segment Jay Hay Noow.
- 1:00Speaker 1: But guys, first, we'll start off with the bullpen.
- 1:04Speaker 2: It's tough to call it their ugliest showing of the
- 1:06Speaker 2: year because it seems like this exact thing has happened
- 1:10Speaker 2: multiple times.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I think they've flown thirteen saves.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Now you would think, yeah, you would think nine runs
- 1:18Speaker 2: would be enough to secure a win against any team,
- 1:21Speaker 2: especially when Paul Skiing starts. And then I mean you
- 1:25Speaker 2: look at it the way they manage the game.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I don't think you could fault the manager here, right.
- 1:32Speaker 2: You went with the long relief guy with Johan Ramirez
- 1:35Speaker 2: because Paul didn't finish the fifth inning. Johann kept them
- 1:39Speaker 2: in it, and then Mason Montgomery got tagged pretty hard,
- 1:43Speaker 2: and then you went to your best option, your best
- 1:46Speaker 2: high leverage arm with Gregory Soto, who got absolutely blasted.
- 1:51Speaker 2: And that was pretty much the game. So, I mean,
- 1:54Speaker 2: we talked about how we think this bullpen could be fixed.
- 1:57Speaker 2: We've talked about what's wrong. I mean, I guess now
- 2:00Speaker 2: we just gotta talk about it more. I mean, what
- 2:04Speaker 2: what can you even say at this point, Josh, when
- 2:06Speaker 2: you're in the clubhouse on a team that's got great
- 2:09Speaker 2: starting pitching, that has been playing better defense as of late,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and that has scored at least nine runs I believe,
- 2:18Speaker 2: four times in the last calendar week. Yeah, I mean,
- 2:21Speaker 2: but the bullpen is killing you guys. What what's the
- 2:24Speaker 2: vibe like?
- 2:27Speaker 3: It's It's one of those things where as an offense
- 2:31Speaker 3: you feel like you gotta score.
- 2:34Speaker 4: A thousand runs and not saying you're going to score
- 2:36Speaker 4: thousand ruins.
- 2:37Speaker 3: But whether it's starting pitching or bullpen, like, there's gonna
- 2:40Speaker 3: be moments throughout the season where you know offense is
- 2:44Speaker 3: gonna feel like, man, we gotta go out here and
- 2:45Speaker 3: we gotta you know, score ten runs and it's and
- 2:48Speaker 3: it's gonna be vice versa where you know Pitcher's gonna
- 2:50Speaker 3: be like man, our offense and scoring we gotta put
- 2:53Speaker 3: up zeros. And I don't think it's anything that you know,
- 2:58Speaker 3: they're like, oh, we gotta do this. I don't think
- 3:01Speaker 3: the guys are offensively saying they have to do this
- 3:04Speaker 3: because they're they're they're playing well as a whole, as
- 3:07Speaker 3: a team, you know, you know, bullpen has been a struggle.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Defense obviously, as you said, has been playing a little
- 3:15Speaker 3: bit better. But it's one of those things where you're
- 3:17Speaker 3: not trying to point fingers, but you know everybody's in there, Hey,
- 3:21Speaker 3: come on, y'all is tighten up, let's focus.
- 3:23Speaker 4: You know.
- 3:23Speaker 3: It's not like you're going up to the bullpen and say, hey, man,
- 3:26Speaker 3: I need you to go through a scoreless inding. But
- 3:27Speaker 3: in the team meeting, you know, behind closed doors, hey man,
- 3:30Speaker 3: we all got a job to do.
- 3:31Speaker 4: We all need to tighten up.
- 3:33Speaker 3: And you know, it's one of those things where the
- 3:35Speaker 3: message is delivered and the ears that need to hear
- 3:38Speaker 3: it are gonna hear it. But I don't think there's
- 3:41Speaker 3: anybody in their point fingers saying, hey man, bullpen, y'all
- 3:44Speaker 3: need to do this.
- 3:46Speaker 4: I mean, we know what it is, and so do they.
- 3:50Speaker 3: I think it's just one of those things where it's
- 3:52Speaker 3: probably more talk amongst the bullpen of those guys trying
- 3:54Speaker 3: to figure things out, you know. But as far as
- 3:57Speaker 3: position players, I mean, yeah, they definitely probably feel like
- 4:02Speaker 3: they have to score a lot of runs. But at
- 4:05Speaker 3: the end of the day, you know, offense is something
- 4:08Speaker 3: that you know, whether pitching is good or bad, you know,
- 4:10Speaker 3: you're trying to put.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Up as many runs as possible.
- 4:13Speaker 3: But I think as a whole, everybody knows where that
- 4:16Speaker 3: sore spot is and it's got to be addressed. And
- 4:20Speaker 3: I don't think it's anything that anybody in that clubhouse
- 4:23Speaker 3: can really do. Somebody's got to do it themselves when
- 4:25Speaker 3: they take the goal, or something's got to be shaken
- 4:28Speaker 3: up from front office. Whether that's bringing up and give
- 4:31Speaker 3: some other guys a try make a trade. Who knows,
- 4:34Speaker 3: but you said thirteen blown saves, that's that's unacceptable.
- 4:38Speaker 5: Yeah, And it's like up there for most of MOB.
- 4:40Speaker 5: I haven't checked recently. It was up there earlier. It's
- 4:44Speaker 5: probably still up there. But what was really frustrated last
- 4:47Speaker 5: night was just how close they came to not having
- 4:50Speaker 5: this mess happen. Mason Montgomery had two strikeouts. I think
- 4:54Speaker 5: that was the first two batters he faced. He struck
- 4:56Speaker 5: them both out, maybe a walk in between, but there's
- 4:59Speaker 5: two outs in the and they proceeded to give up
- 5:03Speaker 5: six runs with one out left in the inning, and
- 5:07Speaker 5: it was just the confidence level is shattered. I feel like,
- 5:11Speaker 5: when you can't trust this bullpen, you're walking in with
- 5:15Speaker 5: a nicely and I feel like that's just games like
- 5:18Speaker 5: this are gonna be in the back of fans head,
- 5:20Speaker 5: in the back of player's head until something gets addressed.
- 5:24Speaker 5: I will note that the Pirates seem to be active.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Ken Rosenthal in The Athletic Today just published that the
- 5:30Speaker 5: Pirates are some of the most aggressive suitors out there.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Obviously a lot of people are looking for bullpen help
- 5:36Speaker 5: this time of year not unique for competitive teams, but
- 5:39Speaker 5: pirates are really active, making enough of a wave within
- 5:45Speaker 5: the community that they stand out. So that's encouraging, But
- 5:51Speaker 5: it's not surprising, like you should be with the way
- 5:53Speaker 5: that this team is going. This is a top five
- 5:56Speaker 5: offense in f ward, this is a top five starting rotation.
- 6:01Speaker 5: And then you get to the bullpen and it's nineteenth,
- 6:04Speaker 5: and it's it's very clear where the issue is and
- 6:07Speaker 5: it's a pretty easy fix if you go out and
- 6:10Speaker 5: find some people, but you got to do it. And
- 6:13Speaker 5: I don't know how they're going to go about it,
- 6:14Speaker 5: but something needs to change.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the fact that their nineteenth is surprising,
- 6:21Speaker 2: honestly because it's just been that. Like you go through
- 6:24Speaker 2: the roster and you wonder, like, how many guys do
- 6:27Speaker 2: you feel comfortable, Like, if you were to pitch them
- 6:30Speaker 2: to say, four times a week, how many guys do
- 6:33Speaker 2: you feel comfortable betting on that they would only allow
- 6:37Speaker 2: one run in those four appearances, because that's kind of
- 6:39Speaker 2: what you need from your bullpen.
- 6:41Speaker 5: And it's like Sodo and right now, right.
- 6:43Speaker 2: And dotel, Yeah, I would say those three And I mean,
- 6:46Speaker 2: I'm sure we're recording this. Like I said on Thursday afternoon,
- 6:49Speaker 2: I'm sure the plan was for Carmen to piggyback with
- 6:51Speaker 2: Jared and we'll see how he does. And but like,
- 6:56Speaker 2: if that's how they're going to use him, then I
- 6:58Speaker 2: mean that helps the bullpen in the sense where it's
- 7:00Speaker 2: gonna cover innings, but they need.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Help finishing games.
- 7:04Speaker 2: And I mean, I think Carmen can eventually get there,
- 7:07Speaker 2: but he's not gonna if they're if they're gonna use
- 7:08Speaker 2: him as a bridge guy, which I think makes a
- 7:11Speaker 2: ton of sense, especially with Jared being where he is
- 7:13Speaker 2: right now.
- 7:14Speaker 1: That doesn't help the late innings and Soto.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Soto's had two really bad outings so and one of
- 7:20Speaker 2: them was Wednesday against the Astros. I'm not super worried
- 7:24Speaker 2: about that. I mean, it's just gonna happen. I mean,
- 7:26Speaker 2: and some of the guys, I mean, some of the
- 7:29Speaker 2: hits he allowed were against like the best hitters in baseball,
- 7:32Speaker 2: and you just you get beat by jord On Alvarez
- 7:35Speaker 2: every now and then that happens, and then like you
- 7:39Speaker 2: look at other instances with him, like some of those
- 7:41Speaker 2: runs he allowed was on like very very very soft
- 7:43Speaker 2: contact and it was just defensive positioning kind of did
- 7:46Speaker 2: them in. But you look, I mean, there's just when
- 7:50Speaker 2: a pitcher only goes five on this team, you're holding
- 7:53Speaker 2: your breath because and more often than not, they're in
- 7:56Speaker 2: a situation where it's like, all right, five innings are covered,
- 8:00Speaker 2: their four innings remaining, if they only just allow one
- 8:03Speaker 2: run per inning most of the time, they're still in
- 8:06Speaker 2: a position to win. And they can't even do that.
- 8:09Speaker 2: That's that's a problem. I just have some stats here
- 8:13Speaker 2: before we round out this topic or this segment.
- 8:16Speaker 1: This is their fifth loss of the year.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Wednesday was their fifth loss of the year when they
- 8:20Speaker 2: were leading after sixth innings. It's their fourth loss of
- 8:24Speaker 2: the year after leading after seven innings. And another stat
- 8:28Speaker 2: that came from dan Zay Grilly. This one comes from
- 8:30Speaker 2: Adam Gertz or regrets excuse me. On April twelfth at
- 8:34Speaker 2: the Cubs, they blew a six to four lead, bottom
- 8:36Speaker 2: of the eighth with two outs.
- 8:37Speaker 1: It was an eighty nine percent win probability.
- 8:40Speaker 2: On April twenty seventh against the Cardinals, they're leaning to nothing,
- 8:44Speaker 2: top of the nine with one out, ninety five percent
- 8:46Speaker 2: win probability. They lost that game May tenth at San Francisco,
- 8:49Speaker 2: two run lead, bottom of the tenth with two outs,
- 8:51Speaker 2: eighty eight percent win probability. May fifteenth against the Phillies
- 8:55Speaker 2: nine to six, top of the ninth with one out,
- 8:58Speaker 2: ninety six percent win problem ability. June third at Houston
- 9:03Speaker 2: nine to five lead, bottom or top of yeah, bottom
- 9:08Speaker 2: of the eighth, two outs, ninety eight percent win probability.
- 9:12Speaker 2: They lost all of these games. So of these five
- 9:15Speaker 2: losses that I just rattled off, eighty nine, ninety five,
- 9:18Speaker 2: eighty eight, ninety six, ninety eight win.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Probability, and they can't close the door.
- 9:22Speaker 2: And right now you look at the standings as again
- 9:25Speaker 2: as the time of we're recording this, the Pirates, if
- 9:28Speaker 2: I can pull it up in an appropriate amount of time,
- 9:32Speaker 2: are five and a half games out of first place.
- 9:35Speaker 2: So those five losses, I mean, does that does that
- 9:37Speaker 2: get you to first? No, it doesn't because the Milwaukee
- 9:39Speaker 2: Brewers would still need to lose five and God does
- 9:42Speaker 2: not allow them to do that. So, but you know,
- 9:46Speaker 2: you're in a better position, You're in a better wildcard position.
- 9:49Speaker 1: You're knocking on the door.
- 9:51Speaker 2: And it feels similar to another team that I cover,
- 9:54Speaker 2: the Pittsburgh Penguins. Throughout all of this last hockey season,
- 9:57Speaker 2: the Penguins blew so many leads, and they lost in
- 10:00Speaker 2: overtime so many games.
- 10:02Speaker 1: They lost in the shootout so many.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Times, and we were saying throughout the whole season, it'd
- 10:06Speaker 2: be a real shame if it comes to the end
- 10:09Speaker 2: and they don't reach the playoffs, and you're gonna look
- 10:11Speaker 2: at all those points they left out there. Thankfully, the
- 10:13Speaker 2: Penguins got to the postseason.
- 10:16Speaker 1: The Pirates. Same thing.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Less teams get to the MLB postseason than the NHL,
- 10:22Speaker 2: and it's a tight race you look at. I think
- 10:25Speaker 2: there's like eleven teams right now fighting for these six
- 10:28Speaker 2: playoffs spots as we're in early June. It's gonna come
- 10:32Speaker 2: down to a game or two. And the Pirates have
- 10:35Speaker 2: already let five very very very winnable games get away
- 10:39Speaker 2: because they can't get the last five to one outs
- 10:44Speaker 2: they needed.
- 10:45Speaker 5: So yeah, and looking at the standings, they are currently
- 10:49Speaker 5: the final wildcard team, yep, right now, with the Diamondbacks
- 10:53Speaker 5: half a game in the Phillies half a game behind them.
- 10:55Speaker 2: So yeah, yep, yeah, So all right, we're going to
- 11:01Speaker 2: take a quick break from our sponsors and when we
- 11:03Speaker 2: come back.
- 11:03Speaker 1: We're going to talk some Paul schemes here on Bucko Territory.

- 12:08Speaker 2: All Right, Paul Skins not as bad as the bullpen,
- 12:12Speaker 2: but not as good as we're used to seeing Paul
- 12:14Speaker 2: skeens be. I believe in his last twenty innings of work,
- 12:17Speaker 2: he's allowed fifteen earned runs.
- 12:20Speaker 1: His ZRA is still over three. He hasn't pitched into
- 12:24Speaker 1: the seventh inning. I believe in his last four outings.
- 12:28Speaker 2: And yeah, I mean this last this last start Wednesday
- 12:32Speaker 2: doesn't even get to the fifth. You look overall, the
- 12:34Speaker 2: body of work is still pretty solid. It's hard to
- 12:38Speaker 2: complain about his you know, total season workload, but just
- 12:45Speaker 2: you know, again, the expectation with Paul Skins is so
- 12:48Speaker 2: much higher than what he's.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Been as of Blake.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And it's at a point now where I don't know
- 12:54Speaker 2: if you're concerned necessarily, but it's a little puzzling because
- 12:59Speaker 2: I don't think we've seen him go through this type
- 13:02Speaker 2: of stretch in his major league career. So I'll start
- 13:05Speaker 2: with you, Mark, I mean, are you worried about the guy?
- 13:07Speaker 2: Or I mean, what are your feelings when you're.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Watching Paul kind of go through this little rough stretch.
- 13:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm not worried in the slightest bit. Paul Skins
- 13:16Speaker 5: is still the best pitcher on the planet. The results
- 13:19Speaker 5: just haven't been the best that we've seen. He's been
- 13:22Speaker 5: really let down by his defense recently. We saw that
- 13:26Speaker 5: a lot on Wednesday night where a couple balls that
- 13:30Speaker 5: Nicking Dallas probably should have gotten to that ended up
- 13:33Speaker 5: costing him, you know, twenty more pitches and he ended
- 13:36Speaker 5: up throwing one hundred and nine pitches and four point
- 13:38Speaker 5: two innings, which not what we're used to seeing with him.
- 13:43Speaker 5: So but if you look at his statcast page, the
- 13:46Speaker 5: metrics beyond like all the underlying data still shows he's
- 13:50Speaker 5: Paul Skins has expected ERA two point twenty nine, ninety
- 13:54Speaker 5: eighth percentile, still has like ninety eight percent title just
- 13:59Speaker 5: pitching run value. He's still really, really, really good. It's
- 14:03Speaker 5: just we see how good the NL pitchers are this year.
- 14:06Speaker 5: I mean, the he's I don't know if he's even
- 14:09Speaker 5: gonna be like in there the top three with the
- 14:12Speaker 5: way everyone else is pitching in the NL for nlsy Young,
- 14:15Speaker 5: he'll get there, but yeah, it's it's a little concerning.
- 14:19Speaker 5: You're not used to seeing a three point oh nine
- 14:21Speaker 5: e r A next to Paul Skin's name. Uh, but
- 14:24Speaker 5: when that's paired with he's got a zero point nine
- 14:26Speaker 5: to one whip right now, He'll be just fine. Uh,
- 14:30Speaker 5: the results will come around. He's still still pitching lights out.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Wait what about you, Josh, Yeah, no, not not concerned
- 14:40Speaker 3: obviously saying that's Kings as human three point oh nine.
- 14:45Speaker 4: I think there are a lot of pitchers that would
- 14:46Speaker 4: still be like, man, sign me up right right now.
- 14:50Speaker 3: And as you said, defense, yesterday wasn't the only time
- 14:54Speaker 3: the defense has somewhat let him down. There's been some
- 14:56Speaker 3: other starts. But at the same time, it's major league baseball. Man,
- 15:00Speaker 3: you're gonna run some you know, moments where you have
- 15:04Speaker 3: a stretch of Man, every ball they hit is finding
- 15:08Speaker 3: you know, with runners on, it's finding some mouthfield grass
- 15:11Speaker 3: or you know, my defense might not have picked me
- 15:14Speaker 3: up here there' that's baseball. But I don't think it's
- 15:18Speaker 3: anything to be, you know, worried about. But at the
- 15:22Speaker 3: same time, you know, it's just one of those things.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Just like a hitter when they're going through a stretch,
- 15:26Speaker 3: all it takes is is one.
- 15:29Speaker 4: So for him, it's going to I was gonna take
- 15:31Speaker 4: that one.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Start where I don't even want to say where something
- 15:34Speaker 3: is clicking, but you know where it's just like a
- 15:36Speaker 3: clean defensive game. Everything's on and it's like, okay, once
- 15:40Speaker 3: you get back into like best seventh th and then
- 15:42Speaker 3: he might be rattling off seven again, seven again, seven again.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Not to change subjects, but I said, you know, Gunzolence
- 15:50Speaker 3: was gonna hit a home run and kind of come
- 15:51Speaker 3: in bunches, kind of the same thing where like, you know,
- 15:54Speaker 3: you just might need that one start, and you know,
- 15:57Speaker 3: as you mentioned, fifteen earned over the last twenty innings
- 16:00Speaker 3: is obviously something that nobody is accustomed to seeing, you know,
- 16:05Speaker 3: next to Paul Skins stat line.
- 16:06Speaker 4: But I think it's one of those things.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Also, not that it's humbling for him, because this game
- 16:11Speaker 3: is humbling, but it's also I think humbling for fans
- 16:14Speaker 3: to know that even the person that you think is
- 16:18Speaker 3: the greatest in the world, trust me, he's gonna have
- 16:20Speaker 3: the time or tour. It's not gonna be as easy
- 16:23Speaker 3: to him. But you know that that's what makes these
- 16:26Speaker 3: guys great is you know, even these moments, let's say
- 16:29Speaker 3: it's just gonna take one start, maybe one at bat one,
- 16:31Speaker 3: one big moment getting out of a jam or something,
- 16:34Speaker 3: and next thing, you know, to be like, oh, that
- 16:37Speaker 3: here he is expected to add it two two, nine,
- 16:39Speaker 3: and next thing you know, he's in the runnings for
- 16:41Speaker 3: you know, top three, top fives. I but I'm not
- 16:45Speaker 3: worried about anything. It's just, you know, it's got to
- 16:47Speaker 3: run his course, just like a sickness, you know, when
- 16:49Speaker 3: you got the floor something letters run his course and
- 16:52Speaker 3: you know, come out stronger on the other side.
- 16:54Speaker 4: What about you know, I.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Mean, I'm not necessarily worried.
- 16:57Speaker 2: I am very curious to see how Paul carrying himself
- 17:02Speaker 2: when we're not around, you know, when no one else
- 17:04Speaker 2: is around, Like, is he working extra hard right now?
- 17:07Speaker 1: Does he feel more pressed?
- 17:09Speaker 2: Because that was something that always really impressed me about
- 17:13Speaker 2: him early in his career. Like I remember in Dodger
- 17:17Speaker 2: Stadium is rookie year, Taoscar Hernandez was the first player
- 17:20Speaker 2: to hit a home run off the splinker, and we
- 17:24Speaker 2: were asking him about after the game. He was like,
- 17:26Speaker 2: I'm still gonna throw that pitch. It's still a really
- 17:28Speaker 2: good pitch. It's like put where I wanted. He's a
- 17:30Speaker 2: big league hitter.
- 17:31Speaker 1: It was a home run. It is what it is.
- 17:33Speaker 2: And in a lot of cases, when you talk to
- 17:35Speaker 2: him after a bad outing, which for the most part
- 17:39Speaker 2: happens like once every two months.
- 17:41Speaker 1: He's not really faced.
- 17:43Speaker 2: He's because most of his bout adding bad outings throughout
- 17:46Speaker 2: his career, I've just kind of been poor luck in
- 17:50Speaker 2: a lot of ways. You look at a lot of
- 17:51Speaker 2: his runs where he's allowed, Like I think back to
- 17:54Speaker 2: there was a start last year in Milwaukee whereas against
- 17:57Speaker 2: him is Eroski.
- 17:59Speaker 1: A lot of runs he allowed in that outing.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Where like the very Yeah, it's just like they hit
- 18:06Speaker 2: him where they weren't. And that's not taking anything away
- 18:08Speaker 2: from the Brewers. That's that's how you win baseball games. Yeah, yeah,
- 18:13Speaker 2: But sometimes, like as a pitcher, you're just like all right,
- 18:15Speaker 2: Like I threw that pitch hoping to get weak contact,
- 18:19Speaker 2: and I did.
- 18:19Speaker 1: It just happened to go where no one else was.
- 18:22Speaker 2: And sometimes a player tries to do that, sometimes a
- 18:24Speaker 2: player gets lucky. But that's been the case for Paul,
- 18:29Speaker 2: and I still think that's probably the synopsis I have
- 18:33Speaker 2: throughout this stretch. You look, I mean, he's allowing a
- 18:36Speaker 2: lot more hits than he typically does, but when you
- 18:39Speaker 2: look at his like season as a whole, he's still
- 18:42Speaker 2: like in the eighty six percentile. I think in average
- 18:45Speaker 2: exit velocity allowed, So it's it's not like teams are
- 18:49Speaker 2: really squaring them up, you know, save a handful of games.
- 18:53Speaker 2: I think really the worst showing he had was against
- 18:55Speaker 2: the Phillies. That was like the only time I remember
- 18:58Speaker 2: watching being like, oh, like they made adjustments and they're
- 19:01Speaker 2: figuring this guy out like the second or third time
- 19:03Speaker 2: through the order, whereas the rest it's like, yeah, you
- 19:06Speaker 2: look at the Mets game on Opening Day?
- 19:08Speaker 1: Was that really his fault? And like Nick Gonzales the
- 19:10Speaker 1: same thing.
- 19:11Speaker 2: On Wednesday, Like, I mean he could. He needs to
- 19:14Speaker 2: be better, but he's not walking a ton of guys.
- 19:16Speaker 2: He's still getting strikeouts. The efficiency needs to be a
- 19:20Speaker 2: little bit better. But I'm just curious to see how
- 19:23Speaker 2: he handles his preparation, if if he tries to do
- 19:27Speaker 2: anything a little bit more, or maybe he simplifies it,
- 19:29Speaker 2: maybe he just kind of relies a little bit more
- 19:31Speaker 2: on the fastball and just lets that do the work.
- 19:35Speaker 5: Speaking of that really quick, I've been seeing a lot
- 19:37Speaker 5: of people have been concerned about his fastball doesn't have
- 19:40Speaker 5: the same velocity that it's like thank you, thank you, yeah,
- 19:44Speaker 5: and it is. I mean, it's so last year. It
- 19:47Speaker 5: averaged ninety eight point two. This year it's averaging ninety
- 19:50Speaker 5: seven point one. But last year batters were hitting two
- 19:54Speaker 5: five against it. This year they're batting one sixty three
- 19:57Speaker 5: against it and sluggings less. I mean, so it's a
- 20:00Speaker 5: better pitch despite it not going as fast, and one,
- 20:05Speaker 5: you know that's not gonna like stretch out his arm
- 20:08Speaker 5: as much. But two also it helps get more contact
- 20:11Speaker 5: and extend him in the Indians, where if he's throwing
- 20:13Speaker 5: it right by everyone and whipping, he's not gonna get
- 20:16Speaker 5: as much contact, not gonna you don't have to throw
- 20:19Speaker 5: more pitches. So I'm not concerned about the fastball. I
- 20:22Speaker 5: don't think you guys are. I don't think it's indicative
- 20:25Speaker 5: of like an injury or anything like that. I think
- 20:27Speaker 5: he's just throwing with more control and it's working out.
- 20:32Speaker 4: Baseball hitters are making adjustments.
- 20:35Speaker 3: He's making adjustments as a pitcher, and in some cases
- 20:38Speaker 3: he may be trying to pitch more to contact based
- 20:40Speaker 3: off of who they're facing.
- 20:41Speaker 4: And sometimes if.
- 20:43Speaker 3: You pitch it more to contact, you might have a
- 20:44Speaker 3: little bit of unlucky things where it's like, you know what,
- 20:47Speaker 3: this is a team I can't play around what I
- 20:48Speaker 3: got to throw up power stuff.
- 20:52Speaker 4: You know, he's a smart guy.
- 20:53Speaker 3: He's he's a pitcher man, so h you know, with
- 20:57Speaker 3: hearing those metrics, those numbers, I'm pretty sure there are
- 21:00Speaker 3: moments where he's like, I don't have to pitch for
- 21:03Speaker 3: a strike out here, I'll take a first pitch ground ball,
- 21:06Speaker 3: you know. And you know sometimes that first pitch ground
- 21:08Speaker 3: ball might be a first pitch dribbler that.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Ends up, you know, and that's just the name of
- 21:14Speaker 4: the game.
- 21:14Speaker 3: But watching him in his preparation, you know, I won't
- 21:17Speaker 3: say it's preparation, but like watching him and how he
- 21:19Speaker 3: goes about his business, I'm not worried about anything.
- 21:21Speaker 4: It's just baseball.
- 21:22Speaker 2: You know.
- 21:23Speaker 3: They're they're making adjustments, and I think he's trying to
- 21:25Speaker 3: make adjustments as well, and also not try to overdo
- 21:30Speaker 3: it because the more simple, as you said, no, something.
- 21:33Speaker 4: Simple, keep it simple.
- 21:35Speaker 3: You know that that that's your best bet, because you know,
- 21:38Speaker 3: you start getting too many things in your head or
- 21:41Speaker 3: you know, trying to do too much, you really lose
- 21:43Speaker 3: what what got you there. And I don't think Paul
- 21:46Speaker 3: is in a situation where he's gonna be trying to
- 21:49Speaker 3: put his left sock on instead of his right one first,
- 21:52Speaker 3: and like you know what I mean.
- 21:55Speaker 2: But that's that's where I'm curious kind of round this off.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Is just like all of his under the hoodwork between starts.
- 22:03Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not there in the meeting with him
- 22:06Speaker 1: or anything, but.
- 22:06Speaker 2: It just seems like it's been so consistent throughout his
- 22:09Speaker 2: career where you're really combing it with a like a
- 22:13Speaker 2: thin comb, you know. But now I'm curious to see
- 22:17Speaker 2: like what he's looking for because like the advanced metrics
- 22:21Speaker 2: don't necessarily show a lot of weakness, but the results
- 22:25Speaker 2: aren't there, and so is is he maybe diving deeper?
- 22:30Speaker 2: Like it's it's just uncharted territory. So how does he
- 22:34Speaker 2: kind of address this? That'll be something I'm just interested
- 22:37Speaker 2: to get.
- 22:38Speaker 3: With the guy that played fifteen years ago that didn't
- 22:41Speaker 3: have metrics when they said you.
- 22:43Speaker 4: Can't worry about results, Yeah you.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Right there, you have the metrics. Nothing's changed. Guess what
- 22:48Speaker 3: you can't worry about unloock, So you answered.
- 22:51Speaker 4: It right there for everybody.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Yeah, hey, there's nothing you need to change other than
- 22:56Speaker 3: you can't control the results if you're thrown it where
- 22:58Speaker 3: if you're making a pitch what you want.
- 23:00Speaker 4: They more times.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Than not, it's gonna go your way just right now.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Baseball has a way of saying, you're gonna go through
- 23:07Speaker 3: a little stretch where everything you throw is gonna frustrate
- 23:10Speaker 3: you because you're making a pitch you want but you're
- 23:12Speaker 3: not getting the results. And hitters deal with that a
- 23:14Speaker 3: lot more than pictures because we hit more pictures.
- 23:19Speaker 4: More times than not. They make a good pitch and
- 23:20Speaker 4: make the pitch they want more times than not. Hitters
- 23:23Speaker 4: are gonna roll over or you know, do whatever. But
- 23:26Speaker 4: you know, you have.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Those starts where it's like, man, this dude stuck his
- 23:29Speaker 3: butt out and through his bat and got an RBI single.
- 23:32Speaker 3: You know, Dan, this dude spoiled the pitch, and you know, dang,
- 23:35Speaker 3: now we you know, there's a lot that goes into it,
- 23:37Speaker 3: but it does make you question because if you haven't
- 23:43Speaker 3: had somebody that can tell you how to go about
- 23:45Speaker 3: your business to state of course, you're gonna look further
- 23:48Speaker 3: into those numbers and probably tweak something. So I hope
- 23:52Speaker 3: he doesn't tweak anything, because as you just pointed out, no,
- 23:56Speaker 3: nothing's changed, state of course, but that is that's one
- 23:59Speaker 3: of the toughest thing though, because you want to change
- 24:01Speaker 3: something because the results matter.
- 24:04Speaker 4: That's the hardest part.
- 24:05Speaker 5: And next projected skiing start Tuesday against the Dodgers at
- 24:09Speaker 5: P and C. So should be a fun game there,
- 24:12Speaker 5: so hopefully you can bounce back against one of the
- 24:14Speaker 5: best teams in baseball.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Absolutely, all right, So Josh just gave us some veteran
- 24:19Speaker 2: wisdom there. Feels like that's a good time to transition
- 24:22Speaker 2: to the way we end our show every Friday with
- 24:24Speaker 2: our weekly segment, Jay Now, what do.
- 24:42Speaker 3: I gotta forget me? I'll be kind of bobbing my
- 24:44Speaker 3: head when the beat drops, but yeah, my segment for
- 24:48Speaker 3: Jay Now. Even throughout this whole you know episode, I
- 24:52Speaker 3: know we've kind of hit on some things that might
- 24:55Speaker 3: be a little uncomfortable to talk about, but I want
- 24:57Speaker 3: to highlight something that's been going, you know, pretty well
- 24:59Speaker 3: for for the Pirates right now as their offense, they've
- 25:02Speaker 3: been pretty red hot, and throughout everything that's going on,
- 25:07Speaker 3: it's at least nice to be able to highlight that
- 25:09Speaker 3: they've been in these games and regardless of what's happened
- 25:12Speaker 3: with starting pitching bullpen, you.
- 25:15Speaker 4: Know, media dramatist or that you know.
- 25:17Speaker 3: One thing that's consistent in the media is that this
- 25:20Speaker 3: is an offense that is going out there putting up
- 25:22Speaker 3: numbers and they are making it very tough on the
- 25:24Speaker 3: posing pitchers every night. And that's the way that you
- 25:28Speaker 3: can obviously keep your head above water in these cases
- 25:31Speaker 3: of you know, being in the division. I think you
- 25:33Speaker 3: said five five and a half games out with the
- 25:37Speaker 3: bullpen struggles, with the defensive struggles. You know, the offense
- 25:41Speaker 3: has been steady, you know, keeping them in these games.
- 25:45Speaker 4: And I know they had the.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Little blip on the radar about a month ago or whatever,
- 25:50Speaker 3: but that's part of baseball. You're gonna go through the
- 25:52Speaker 3: ebbs and flows. But my hating now segment was with
- 25:55Speaker 3: everything going on in the media and you know, now
- 25:59Speaker 3: we have bullpen issues, it's refreshing just to obviously see
- 26:03Speaker 3: the offense continue to you know, stay of course and
- 26:05Speaker 3: put pressure on the other pitchers, because offense is something that,
- 26:10Speaker 3: as I said, can kind of teeter totter, and you know,
- 26:13Speaker 3: especially when things might not be going your way or.
- 26:15Speaker 4: You got the injury bug.
- 26:17Speaker 3: You've had guys pop in, pop up, Oh man O'Hearn
- 26:20Speaker 3: comes back from the you know, injury list.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Homers, and it's.
- 26:23Speaker 3: Like, man, this offense is a serious offense, and I
- 26:26Speaker 3: just wanted to highlight that you guys got anything to
- 26:29Speaker 3: go with that.
- 26:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I got some stats that throw out here, just
- 26:32Speaker 5: to throw into context stuff how ridiculously good this Pirates
- 26:36Speaker 5: offense is, which is crazy to say coming off of
- 26:40Speaker 5: last year where they were the words offense in MLB.
- 26:43Speaker 5: Now they are a legitimate top five offense.
- 26:46Speaker 4: So they are.
- 26:47Speaker 5: They have the third best average in MLB, they have
- 26:50Speaker 5: the second highest on base percentage, the fourth highest ops.
- 26:54Speaker 5: They've scored the fourth most runs, they have the second
- 26:57Speaker 5: most stolen bases and the tenth most home runes. That's crazy.
- 27:02Speaker 5: I like, it's just it's hard to believe. I don't
- 27:07Speaker 5: think if you asked me, are the Pirates gonna have
- 27:09Speaker 5: a top five offense in this offseason? I don't think
- 27:12Speaker 5: even I, someone who's pretty optimistic on the Pirates, would
- 27:16Speaker 5: have said, like, oh, yeah, of course they're gonna have
- 27:18Speaker 5: a top five offense. Yeah, you know, like Ryan O'Hearn,
- 27:21Speaker 5: Brandon Loud, O'eneo Cruz, Brian Reynolds, Spencer Horwitz, all these
- 27:24Speaker 5: guys are gonna have like one hundred and thirty something
- 27:27Speaker 5: WRC plus is you know, of course, yeah, we're gonna
- 27:30Speaker 5: have multiple All Stars on offense probably yeah, No, I
- 27:32Speaker 5: mean this is surpassed all my expectations. So it is
- 27:36Speaker 5: really really nice to finally see something go better than expected.
- 27:42Speaker 5: I can't really say that too often as a Pirates fan,
- 27:44Speaker 5: So definitely a good Jay hey now, because this offense
- 27:48Speaker 5: deserves some credit.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Yeah, And just to kind of round it up, two
- 27:53Speaker 2: things that I really love about this lineup is a
- 27:56Speaker 2: how long it is. I mean, you've got seven of
- 27:59Speaker 2: your starting nine that are above league g average hitters.
- 28:02Speaker 2: When Connor is healthy, I guess when Endy's in there,
- 28:05Speaker 2: it's it's still seven too. So yeah, you've got like
- 28:07Speaker 2: seven guys who are above league gaverage and that's that's
- 28:12Speaker 2: a winning formula for any team in any division, in
- 28:15Speaker 2: any league. And then the other thing is I love
- 28:18Speaker 2: how they don't just lay down. I mean, there there
- 28:20Speaker 2: are a lot in baseball, especially like when you get
- 28:23Speaker 2: up five to nothing in like the second inning, it's
- 28:26Speaker 2: very easy to get complacent, especially with this pitching staff bullpen,
- 28:31Speaker 2: but uh, it's it's easy to kind of, I don't
- 28:37Speaker 2: want to say, like mail it in but not stay
- 28:40Speaker 2: as locked in.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Right when when you put up a five spot.
- 28:45Speaker 2: So yeah, they do that so often where they have
- 28:48Speaker 2: like a crooked number in the beginning and they don't coast,
- 28:52Speaker 2: and you see them putting together at bats just as
- 28:57Speaker 2: aggressive in the eighth and ninth inning as they do
- 28:59Speaker 2: in the second. Even in the case is where it's
- 29:02Speaker 2: not a close game and they're up seven to nothing,
- 29:04Speaker 2: they still want to they run it up.
- 29:06Speaker 1: And I mean, A, they need to do that. I
- 29:09Speaker 1: think they know that.
- 29:11Speaker 2: And B that's just the sign of a good offense
- 29:14Speaker 2: in general, where it's like no, no amount of run
- 29:17Speaker 2: should ever be enough, regardless of you know, if you
- 29:20Speaker 2: have Mario and or Rivera in your back end or
- 29:22Speaker 2: if you have nobody in your back end of your bullpen.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Like this is pedal to the medal. They're they're doing
- 29:28Speaker 2: everything right. Their approach is great. The way they run
- 29:31Speaker 2: the bases has been really really good this year. I
- 29:34Speaker 2: think they pass the baton so so well.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Yes, they just they just compliment each other.
- 29:41Speaker 5: It's a situation at bats, yeah, where they know what
- 29:44Speaker 5: needs to be done for the team, not just.
- 29:46Speaker 2: To the point where when they don't come through in
- 29:49Speaker 2: situations like you can think of it like in Toronto
- 29:52Speaker 2: where they had the runner on third. I believe it
- 29:55Speaker 2: was in the Friday night game and they couldn't get
- 29:58Speaker 2: a guy home.
- 29:58Speaker 1: It was like Zmerlin Valdez in Mangum.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Like it's like a rarity because in most cases, even
- 30:04Speaker 2: if it is like seven eight nine up, they get
- 30:07Speaker 2: that guy over, they get that guy home, and that's
- 30:11Speaker 2: yeah again, that's the credit he got crapped on all
- 30:14Speaker 2: last year when he had nobody to work with.
- 30:16Speaker 1: But Matt Haig deserves a lot of credit.
- 30:18Speaker 2: I mean, and Ben Sherrington does too, because he brought
- 30:21Speaker 2: in half this line up couple.
- 30:25Speaker 1: But it doesn't necessarily always.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I was gonna say, like, just because you
- 30:30Speaker 2: have nine competent hitters doesn't necessarily mean it's gonna lead
- 30:34Speaker 2: to a good collective hole. You have to find a
- 30:36Speaker 2: way to get these guys to gel together. You want
- 30:38Speaker 2: your two hitter to compliment what the guy at the
- 30:41Speaker 2: top of the orders doing.
- 30:42Speaker 1: You want your bottom third to be able to turn
- 30:45Speaker 1: it over.
- 30:45Speaker 2: And like they they've found a very good rhythm based
- 30:48Speaker 2: off of matchups where every game you feel confident that
- 30:51Speaker 2: they're gonna get guys.
- 30:52Speaker 1: On base and have a lot of opportunities to score.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Literally, I'll just say, that's literally what good teams do.
- 31:00Speaker 3: And that's how offenses talk. Is you even mentioned whether
- 31:04Speaker 3: they were up seven to nothing down big. One thing
- 31:08Speaker 3: that we always talk about is not giving away at bats. Granted,
- 31:12Speaker 3: you're gonna give away at bats throughout the season. It's
- 31:14Speaker 3: a long season. There's just gonna be some at bats
- 31:16Speaker 3: that you like, I don't know why I swung at
- 31:18Speaker 3: that pitch. You know, it happens, you know, but the moment,
- 31:22Speaker 3: you know, it's about limiting those, and that's what good
- 31:25Speaker 3: teams do because they're gonna be moments.
- 31:27Speaker 4: Was like, dang man, we shoul had a five pitch inning.
- 31:29Speaker 4: You know, we had two guys.
- 31:30Speaker 3: We get the first pitch, But there's gonna be moments
- 31:33Speaker 3: where those first two dudes we get the first pitch
- 31:35Speaker 3: and bang something. But it's like, you know, when you
- 31:37Speaker 3: do that throughout nine innings and it's no matter who's
- 31:40Speaker 3: up there.
- 31:41Speaker 4: Man.
- 31:41Speaker 3: That's why I said they're making it tough on the
- 31:43Speaker 3: posing pictures because, as you said, up five down five minutes,
- 31:47Speaker 3: dudes aren't giving away at bats. This dude is taking
- 31:49Speaker 3: this at bat as if this at bat is one
- 31:51Speaker 3: that's gonna win him some arbitration money. I mean that's
- 31:54Speaker 3: literally you know that. That's how they're taking over your bat.
- 31:57Speaker 3: Oh no, you're trying to take food off my table.
- 31:59Speaker 3: That's that's how every bat should be approached.
- 32:02Speaker 2: All right, Well, guys, any final thoughts before we wrap
- 32:05Speaker 2: it up.
- 32:06Speaker 5: Yeah, just Andy Rodriguez just gotta give him a shout out.
- 32:10Speaker 5: His bat has been really nice to have ops over
- 32:14Speaker 5: nine hundred right now batting three hundred. I really love
- 32:18Speaker 5: seeing what he's been doing behind the plate, Both at
- 32:22Speaker 5: the plate and behind the plate. He's been looking all right,
- 32:24Speaker 5: so nice to see and you making a bunch of
- 32:26Speaker 5: consistent starts. It seems like the team's really believing in him,
- 32:30Speaker 5: and for good reason. So glad to get Andy back
- 32:33Speaker 5: in to the form that he was before he was injured.
- 32:36Speaker 5: We'll see how if you can stay consistent with that.
- 32:38Speaker 5: But so far, so good.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Gosh, nothing, nothing.
