- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the tech Talk Radio Network.
- 0:03Speaker 1: This is Alice Cooper, the original Technoe Todd, and you're
- 0:06Speaker 1: listening to tech Talk Radio. Welcome to another episode of
- 0:11Speaker 1: tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean de Weird,
- 0:15Speaker 1: and we are the show that you here to talk
- 0:16Speaker 1: about computers, technology and the Internet and games and games.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Which we have something to talk about. We have some
- 0:25Speaker 2: to talk about this week.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Always always some fun, a lot of stuff as a
- 0:27Speaker 1: matter of fact, you know, and it's we were thinking
- 0:30Speaker 1: about maybe doing you know, doing one of our best
- 0:33Speaker 1: stubs and because we were getting on in the week
- 0:35Speaker 1: and everything, and we just realized, no, we can't. There's
- 0:38Speaker 1: just so much stuff.
- 0:38Speaker 2: That has a lot stuff to happen this week.
- 0:41Speaker 1: So first off, and I know we can talk about
- 0:43Speaker 1: it without getting too much flak from Justine.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Justin's not here.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Uh, it would be the Worldwide Developers Conference, which at
- 0:52Speaker 1: record time is actually still happening. They've got a couple
- 0:55Speaker 1: more days, but the you know, they usually the keynote,
- 0:59Speaker 1: the last note that Tim Cook from Apple has been doing.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And it's it's so weird because you know, I follow
- 1:05Speaker 1: some people in social media and They've been posting photos
- 1:09Speaker 1: of themselves with the new CEO out at the event,
- 1:12Speaker 1: like this guy's really cool. He you know, he gets
- 1:14Speaker 1: gets out there with the people and you know, communicate.
- 1:17Speaker 1: It should be interesting to see what he's what direction
- 1:19Speaker 1: he's able to lead Apple in.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Apple spent the last two years telling us that Apple
- 1:24Speaker 2: Intelligence was coming right right, and during WWC twenty twenty six,
- 1:29Speaker 2: they finally are trying to prove it. I guess so it,
- 1:34Speaker 2: you know. The biggest amount also wasn't iOS twenty seven,
- 1:38Speaker 2: wasn't the Mac because I was surprised a little bit.
- 1:42Speaker 2: I was surprised we didn't see another macneo or an
- 1:44Speaker 2: update on what's coming next. Wasn't Vision Pro, which that's
- 1:48Speaker 2: the thing still like.
- 1:49Speaker 1: What okay, but they're still developing right right, They're still
- 1:53Speaker 1: developing it.
- 1:53Speaker 2: And and there's you know, at NAP this year, Black
- 1:57Speaker 2: Magic released they released their dubbed double Lensed Immersion six sixteen.
- 2:02Speaker 2: K uh god, what's the name of that camera? One
- 2:07Speaker 2: of their cinema cameras. I can't even remember the name.
- 2:09Speaker 2: But it's like they're still doing creating a ton of
- 2:11Speaker 2: content for it because it's still there. It's just like
- 2:14Speaker 2: not it's weird because it's like it's there. Yeah, they're
- 2:18Speaker 2: making it, they're spending money on it. Who's buying it?
- 2:21Speaker 2: That's what I want to know. Uh So the big
- 2:25Speaker 2: topic was Siri. Yeah, right, Well.
- 2:28Speaker 1: To think about it when it comes to I mean
- 2:30Speaker 1: the Apple products, the Apple you know, the Macintosh product Max,
- 2:34Speaker 1: you know, the laptops, the Neo, that's that stuff is good.
- 2:38Speaker 1: But let's face it, something that every most everybody has
- 2:41Speaker 1: these days is some kind of you know, a communication device,
- 2:47Speaker 1: you know, a tablet or they have, you know, a smartphone,
- 2:50Speaker 1: and you know, Apple really wants people to and start
- 2:53Speaker 1: using the iPhone. And you know, last week it kind
- 2:56Speaker 1: of reminded me last week when I was having so
- 2:58Speaker 1: many problems with Gemini, which I've only got fixed, and
- 3:01Speaker 1: I didn't end up taking it to the story. I
- 3:03Speaker 1: ended up doing a couple other things in the settings,
- 3:06Speaker 1: you know Android, the way they set up their settings.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Sometimes one setting will affect another, that setting will affect
- 3:12Speaker 1: It's just crazy. But I ended up getting it back
- 3:14Speaker 1: to work. I got my Gemini back, and I had
- 3:17Speaker 1: thought about that, I have an iPhone, I've got the
- 3:20Speaker 1: fourteen promacs, and I thought I could just go back
- 3:23Speaker 1: to the iPhone because honestly, without the Gemini and the
- 3:27Speaker 1: way that I use it, being able to get an
- 3:30Speaker 1: answer to something really quick when I need it, being
- 3:33Speaker 1: able to just see, you know, make my phone call,
- 3:35Speaker 1: the whole bit, I thought, maybe you just go back
- 3:38Speaker 1: to the iPhone if I'm not going to have the use. So,
- 3:42Speaker 1: you know, Apple doesn't want people to move from their
- 3:46Speaker 1: iPhones to move to their to you know, the Android platform,
- 3:50Speaker 1: because they may have a better a better way of
- 3:54Speaker 1: AI being a part of it.
- 3:55Speaker 2: But I mean, Apple's are a hard spot, right because
- 3:56Speaker 2: they tried to do their own AI stuff and it
- 3:59Speaker 2: was garbage. Yeah, and it's it's stunk. Nobody liked it.
- 4:02Speaker 2: It was not integrated very well. It just kind of
- 4:05Speaker 2: it broke the seamless use of your iPhone. It broke
- 4:08Speaker 2: it broke the seamless use of the iOS environment, right,
- 4:12Speaker 2: the the Apple cross platform environment. So it's struggled, right,
- 4:19Speaker 2: So Apple essentially admitted that traditional voice assistants weren't enough anymore,
- 4:24Speaker 2: and they've now completely rebuilt an AI powered serie. They
- 4:27Speaker 2: say it's designed to be more conversational. Remember context, understand
- 4:31Speaker 2: what's on your screen. So again, right, so I understand
- 4:35Speaker 2: what's underscreen. Is this being processed locally? Is this being
- 4:38Speaker 2: processed in the cloud? Where where's the processing happening?
- 4:41Speaker 1: Right? It?
- 4:41Speaker 2: Is it a local language machine? Is a cloud based?
- 4:45Speaker 2: Is it? So they're trying to figure it out.
- 4:48Speaker 1: That that's the answers. We don't know yet, right, I mean,
- 4:51Speaker 1: we just know that apparently it's going to be coming out, uh,
- 4:55Speaker 1: And that's the big question everybody has. They talk about
- 4:57Speaker 1: it at these developer conferences. Microsoft used to do theirs
- 5:01Speaker 1: as well, and they would talk about these things, but
- 5:04Speaker 1: we might not see them for six months, a year sometimes,
- 5:07Speaker 1: you know, maybe even two or three years.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Maybe we'll see it for the next you know, the
- 5:12Speaker 2: late fall iPhone, the new iPhone release or whatever their hardware.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Their hardware event is in September usually.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Well, they're they're saying they're calling it Serie AI, all right,
- 5:22Speaker 1: so that's what it would be called. Uh. And they're
- 5:26Speaker 1: saying that it won't be available broadly until it launches
- 5:30Speaker 1: public for iOS twenty seven, which they say could happen
- 5:35Speaker 1: this fall. And you know, the thing is people in
- 5:39Speaker 1: the meantime, if they're suddenly needing a smartphone, will an
- 5:44Speaker 1: Apple user. Wait, I think they will. And are Apple
- 5:49Speaker 1: users going to ingest this type? Are they really are
- 5:52Speaker 1: they really interested in in AI?
- 5:56Speaker 2: I don't know, right, but it to me, it just
- 5:58Speaker 2: feels like it's going to be the series just going
- 6:02Speaker 2: to be the annoying type. A voice chat, tell me
- 6:06Speaker 2: what my schedule is, write my schedule, dowt, give you
- 6:08Speaker 2: my calendar advice, just remind me of these things. Right,
- 6:10Speaker 2: It's like, you know, last year they announced Apple Intelligence.
- 6:13Speaker 2: This year they spread it throughout the entire ecosystem, Right,
- 6:15Speaker 2: So it's not here's one AI app. There seems like
- 6:20Speaker 2: their theme was every app should quietly get smurder. That's
- 6:24Speaker 2: kind of what their theme was, right, that's I think
- 6:26Speaker 2: that's one of the polls directly from the from the show.
- 6:29Speaker 2: But it's gonna be weird, right.
- 6:32Speaker 1: There was a story Sean and you being an iPhone user,
- 6:37Speaker 1: and it makes me wonder and I kind of believe this.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Nine to five Mac reported not long ago that iPhone
- 6:45Speaker 1: brand loyalty hit a record high, and they say that
- 6:49Speaker 1: Android users were apparently switching at four times a rate
- 6:54Speaker 1: that they have in the past. So somebody who've maybe
- 6:56Speaker 1: been using a Samsung or a Google Pixel for a
- 6:59Speaker 1: long time, we're suddenly going into the Apple interface and
- 7:04Speaker 1: using the iPhones.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Well, I think that they are riding high on the
- 7:10Speaker 2: success of the Neo.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Right, it's been six months, I think almost six months,
- 7:15Speaker 2: maybe even longer since the Neo is announced. Right, It's
- 7:17Speaker 2: sold out, It's been widely popular, and you haven't seen
- 7:22Speaker 2: anybody from the Windows side develop a product that can
- 7:27Speaker 2: compete with the Neo at any level battery power size.
- 7:33Speaker 2: The Neo is the Geo Metro of the car world. Right,
- 7:38Speaker 2: It's the three cylinder little piecea that just goes. Everybody's reliable,
- 7:43Speaker 2: it's fuel efficient, right, and that takes loyalty. Right. It's
- 7:50Speaker 2: if you can, if you can get somebody to go
- 7:51Speaker 2: from Windows steet to Apple. The ecosystem for your PC
- 7:57Speaker 2: is tied into what they did this with Tahoe, with
- 7:59Speaker 2: iOS twenty say, they seamlessly integrated a cross platform experience.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Your experience is almost identical whether you're on iPad, Mac iMac, whatever,
- 8:12Speaker 2: Mac Mini desktop or iOS. Right, and to be able
- 8:16Speaker 2: to seamlessly go between your messages, your music, everything seamlessly
- 8:21Speaker 2: between all your apps, it's fantastic. Great for me I'm
- 8:25Speaker 2: in the Mac ecosystem for the majority of my work.
- 8:28Speaker 2: I have Max at home, but my primary my primary
- 8:32Speaker 2: machine at home is Windows, but my family is iPhone.
- 8:38Speaker 2: So seamlessly moving between the ability to airdrop, the ability
- 8:42Speaker 2: to share stuff, the ability to text, the ability to
- 8:46Speaker 2: have it all stored in the I cloud. It's it's
- 8:47Speaker 2: a great ecosystem to be in. And I'm sure Justin
- 8:51Speaker 2: would say that, you know, Google has all that and
- 8:54Speaker 2: you can tie it all in and Apple just takes
- 8:57Speaker 2: what other companies have and but and I think Justin
- 9:02Speaker 2: Woods would argue with me on this. But the Apple
- 9:05Speaker 2: stuff just works, and it works the same every time.
- 9:08Speaker 2: It doesn't. It doesn't change with updates. They add some
- 9:12Speaker 2: new stuff, but they don't break things at the level
- 9:15Speaker 2: that I think that Android does when they do a
- 9:18Speaker 2: big update. They don't do or u I redesign that's
- 9:21Speaker 2: out of control. I mean, the last big iOS update
- 9:24Speaker 2: had liquid glass and a couple of other features, but
- 9:26Speaker 2: it's not it's not something out of left field that
- 9:29Speaker 2: makes the user go, well, that was a bad choice.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Yeah, So I think the I think the iPhone is
- 9:36Speaker 1: easy to use. The pixel was good, and I mean,
- 9:40Speaker 1: it's it still works for me and doing what I
- 9:43Speaker 1: need to do. But you know, I look back and
- 9:45Speaker 1: I harken back to what I was able to get
- 9:47Speaker 1: get done with the iPhone, especially with video. With video,
- 9:52Speaker 1: I could edit, you know, with the you know, with
- 9:55Speaker 1: the the program that was a part of the iPhone.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I mean it was, it was. I love that it
- 10:01Speaker 1: was all in one, very easy to do. The quality
- 10:03Speaker 1: was always good, it was very Now the quality on
- 10:06Speaker 1: the cameras on the Pixel got much better, and the
- 10:09Speaker 1: Android obviously much better, but for what I was using.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I just recently installed the black Magic Design app on
- 10:16Speaker 1: my iPhone and I'm really pleased with that too. You know,
- 10:21Speaker 1: it just again makes me think about it. You know,
- 10:24Speaker 1: we've heard of full movie shot on an iPhone. I
- 10:27Speaker 1: don't know what. We haven't heard a full movie shot
- 10:30Speaker 1: on an Android.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know what. I don't know
- 10:34Speaker 2: what apps are. Again, I'm not in that platform, not
- 10:38Speaker 2: in that world, so I don't know. But I know
- 10:40Speaker 2: that with iPhone, with the black Magic app that allows
- 10:43Speaker 2: you to unlock black Magic Raw, there are other applications
- 10:46Speaker 2: that allow you to shoot pro Restra. The iPhone seventeen
- 10:50Speaker 2: Pro can do log it's crazy what you can do
- 10:53Speaker 2: on a phone. And there's even some hardware add ons
- 10:57Speaker 2: for phones that can give you professional outputs like sd
- 11:00Speaker 2: HDSDI HDMI, and then you can get those into a
- 11:04Speaker 2: professional working environment, which for me would be a benefit.
- 11:08Speaker 2: To be able to get that into our routing system
- 11:10Speaker 2: and be able to use it for our broadcasts would
- 11:13Speaker 2: be pretty cool because you can you can tuck in
- 11:16Speaker 2: an iPhone in a lot of unique spaces that you
- 11:19Speaker 2: might not be able to fit traditional broadcast camera.
- 11:21Speaker 1: So apparently this In this nine to five Mac article,
- 11:25Speaker 1: they asked users why they remain loyal to the you know,
- 11:30Speaker 1: Apple platform. Sixty point eight percent quoting there said that
- 11:35Speaker 1: they simply preferred iOS, while a number also did so
- 11:41Speaker 1: because they were invested in the ecosystem, about seventeen percent
- 11:44Speaker 1: a little over that. Other reasons for preferring Apple were
- 11:48Speaker 1: product reliability, ease of use, and trust in the company's
- 11:52Speaker 1: privacy and security measures. And you know that's that's the
- 11:56Speaker 1: other thing. Now that they're getting into serie AI, that
- 12:01Speaker 1: question suddenly comes up, Now, how are they protecting a
- 12:04Speaker 1: privacy when it comes to that AI that's doing the
- 12:08Speaker 1: processing right exactly. We've known iPhone as being Yeah, it's
- 12:14Speaker 1: being a probably a little better secure product. Some people
- 12:18Speaker 1: may disagree with me, but I think that is one
- 12:21Speaker 1: of those things that people suddenly are gonna have more questions,
- 12:24Speaker 1: is where is all that info going? Where is that
- 12:26Speaker 1: data going?
- 12:27Speaker 2: Right? And maybe that's why Apple took kind of took
- 12:31Speaker 2: the back burner for a little while with AI because
- 12:33Speaker 2: they saw that if they had to rely on open
- 12:36Speaker 2: Ai or Gemini to do their AI stuff, maybe they
- 12:39Speaker 2: just didn't like the way it had to handle the
- 12:42Speaker 2: security and the data side of it. So we'll see, right,
- 12:45Speaker 2: But again, the keynote wasn't just all about Siri and
- 12:48Speaker 2: the iPhone right now, And we didn't even mention what
- 12:52Speaker 2: iOS three seven is gonna be called.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yeah, what is the name of it again? Golden Gate,
- 12:58Speaker 1: Golden Gate.
- 12:59Speaker 2: So the whole it was very hip hippish, right, hipster ish.
- 13:03Speaker 2: They had an hippie ish, I mean not hipsterish, yeah right.
- 13:06Speaker 2: They had a Volkswagen drive by while he was standing
- 13:09Speaker 2: up there. They did this weird like seventies disco era
- 13:13Speaker 2: warping with the words and the text and stuff. But
- 13:17Speaker 2: the major theme, the major themes for iOS twenty seven
- 13:20Speaker 2: or Mac OS twenty seven. They say it's better searches.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I don't even know what that means. Now they talk
- 13:26Speaker 2: about on your own computer searching, because any computer user
- 13:30Speaker 2: knows that when you try to search something from your
- 13:32Speaker 2: on your own computer using the finder or the search
- 13:34Speaker 2: function on a Windows machine is garbageful. It's awful, like
- 13:40Speaker 2: you never find what you're looking for.
- 13:42Speaker 1: It's it's the file. Oh there goes my whole search.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yeah, so faster launches. So I'm assuming they're just optimizing
- 13:50Speaker 2: the UI experience, and I guess people are thrilled because
- 13:54Speaker 2: you know how they it with with with Tahoe. They
- 13:56Speaker 2: did the route, they rounded, rounded everything, all the corners
- 14:00Speaker 2: of the apps and stuff, but it wasn't consistent across apps.
- 14:04Speaker 2: So people are apparently now across apps it's more refined,
- 14:09Speaker 2: it's more it's streamlined, so you're not seeing weirdness between
- 14:11Speaker 2: apps and window shapes and stuff like that. So people
- 14:14Speaker 2: are not Apple with that continued AI integration within Mac
- 14:18Speaker 2: os and then the refined liquid glass visuals.
- 14:21Speaker 1: But now you're not using the newest iPhone. I know
- 14:26Speaker 1: that you're aren't two on thirteen or you are.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Thirteen pro so little history on my history with Apple, right,
- 14:36Speaker 2: so I bought an original. So if you go all
- 14:40Speaker 2: the way back to two thousand and eight, that's when
- 14:42Speaker 2: I bought my first iPhone. Oh wow, I bought a
- 14:45Speaker 2: used iPhone three G.
- 14:49Speaker 1: I remember those.
- 14:51Speaker 2: But I was just out of I think I was
- 14:53Speaker 2: twenty three and I didn't have a whole whole, huge
- 14:57Speaker 2: line of established credit. And the only vendor you could
- 15:01Speaker 2: get cell phone service was AT A T.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:05Speaker 2: So I took the phone to AT and T and
- 15:08Speaker 2: I was like, Hey, I'm on, I'll tell which is
- 15:10Speaker 2: now Verizon? Yeah, I want to I got I bought
- 15:14Speaker 2: an iPhone and I want to switch. And they're like, okay, great.
- 15:16Speaker 2: So they ran my credit and they're like, it's gonna
- 15:19Speaker 2: cost you five five hundred bucks to open a line
- 15:22Speaker 2: of this wow, because you don't have any credit. I
- 15:26Speaker 2: was like, what do you mean it's gonna cost you
- 15:27Speaker 2: five hundred dollars? Like I have the phone and they're like, yeah,
- 15:32Speaker 2: well you don't have any credit. We can't guarantee you're not.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Just like you're you you can't. I mean I was
- 15:36Speaker 2: twenty three, So like they just looking at me like
- 15:38Speaker 2: I was kid. So I said, all right, deuces. See
- 15:41Speaker 2: I'm out, yeah, yeah, and I walked away. So then
- 15:44Speaker 2: I'd used it as an iPod, took pictures with it,
- 15:47Speaker 2: put my pictures, played music on it, connected to Wi Fi.
- 15:50Speaker 2: It was great. It was a glorified video iPod at
- 15:52Speaker 2: that point. And then I didn't buy an iPhone again
- 15:57Speaker 2: until twenty eleven, when I bought the iPhone four S
- 16:00Speaker 2: yeah right, And then I didn't buy another iPhone. I
- 16:05Speaker 2: think I have grades with the five maybe yeah, in
- 16:08Speaker 2: between then I didn't buy another iPhone until the seven
- 16:11Speaker 2: plus Wow, which would have been twenty sixteen, twenty fifteen,
- 16:18Speaker 2: and then from then I didn't buy one until twenty
- 16:20Speaker 2: twenty three, when I've got the iPhone thirteen Pro. So
- 16:24Speaker 2: I've been doing multiple I've been doing multiple generational jumps
- 16:28Speaker 2: with my iPhones, and I've been fine with it. Yeah, right,
- 16:32Speaker 2: everything I do on the iPhone thirteen Pro, I don't
- 16:34Speaker 2: need the seventeen Pro. I don't need it. Yeah, I
- 16:37Speaker 2: don't need to spend the money on this phone is
- 16:39Speaker 2: until this phone doesn't support the next upgrade. I'm not moving,
- 16:43Speaker 2: I'm not changing.
- 16:45Speaker 1: I heard in a news story and I'm kind of
- 16:46Speaker 1: wondering when they talked about again, back to Siri. They
- 16:50Speaker 1: talked about Serie AI. You know, I heard one of
- 16:53Speaker 1: the reporters say more than likely it won't work on
- 16:56Speaker 1: older devices. I don't thinking. Okay, wait, you've got to
- 16:59Speaker 1: clarify that, because a lot of us hold on to
- 17:01Speaker 1: our iPhones for many generations, many you know, so we don't.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Are they talking seven? Are they talking fourteen?
- 17:09Speaker 2: The eleven? Yeah?
- 17:11Speaker 1: So which which one are they talking about?
- 17:14Speaker 2: So they're saying that this iOS twenty seven will support
- 17:18Speaker 2: all the way back to the iPhone eleven?
- 17:20Speaker 1: Oh good, all right?
- 17:21Speaker 2: So which is cool? I mean, that's pretty that's pretty
- 17:24Speaker 2: far back. So it's crazy to think you've got to
- 17:28Speaker 2: they've got to optimize for that, for that chipset and
- 17:31Speaker 2: the ability to run it.
- 17:32Speaker 1: And another big question for you, Sean, being a thirteen user,
- 17:36Speaker 1: even though iOS twenty seven would more than likely work
- 17:40Speaker 1: on your device, would you at this point thirteen forty
- 17:44Speaker 1: to fifty six, you know, would you look at going
- 17:46Speaker 1: to a seventeen? No?
- 17:48Speaker 2: No, I have no incentive to buy it, right And
- 17:52Speaker 2: with all my iPhones, I've bought them from Apple directly,
- 17:55Speaker 2: I've not bought them from Verizon. I don't want to
- 17:57Speaker 2: be locked into a Verizon two year, three year agreement.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Whatever I buy them driving from Apple, I get Apple Care,
- 18:03Speaker 2: I do everything through Apple, and it's worked glorious to
- 18:06Speaker 2: me for the last I mean, I've had an iPhone
- 18:09Speaker 2: for two decades at this point, almost right, So it's
- 18:14Speaker 2: crazy to think, but I am just that rooted in
- 18:18Speaker 2: the Apple ecosystem that it would be very difficult for
- 18:23Speaker 2: me to move from the Apple ecosystem. But no, I'm not.
- 18:29Speaker 2: I don't. I don't plan on upgrading. I don't unless
- 18:31Speaker 2: there's nothing. There's nothing that is driving me upgrade.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Now, I'm wondering if anybody's sitting on the fence right
- 18:38Speaker 1: now that that is listening. You know, I thought about
- 18:40Speaker 1: going to iPhone. I don't know, is there good cohesion
- 18:46Speaker 1: cohesion when you have a tablet like you know, you
- 18:50Speaker 1: go and you buy yourself. You know, the iPad iPads
- 18:53Speaker 1: are pretty amazing. I mean, you could do a lot
- 18:55Speaker 1: of stuff with the iPads. And then you say, well,
- 18:59Speaker 1: if I get an eye iPhone, does the iPhone work well.
- 19:02Speaker 2: With the iPad? Yes?
- 19:04Speaker 1: Or is it? Or pretty much that's its own, its
- 19:07Speaker 1: own thing.
- 19:08Speaker 2: It's it's the same. It's literally it looks, feels, it
- 19:12Speaker 2: looks the same. Right, you can you can enable them
- 19:16Speaker 2: to receive calling through your Apple ID, so you can
- 19:19Speaker 2: do all your face timing, audio face timing, you can
- 19:22Speaker 2: take phone calls on it, you can mirror your phone
- 19:24Speaker 2: to it. If you have an entire Apple ecosystem. It's
- 19:30Speaker 2: seamless across the applications. It's you can pick up certain
- 19:34Speaker 2: things and certain apps across devices. You can share it.
- 19:37Speaker 2: So like if I'm doing something in Facebook, like if
- 19:40Speaker 2: I was on Facebook or Instagram or something, I can
- 19:42Speaker 2: pick it up right up in the iPad and then
- 19:44Speaker 2: you can enable it to do it on your Mac.
- 19:46Speaker 2: So if you sit down at your Mac, you can
- 19:47Speaker 2: go seamlessly right into if you know, if you're using
- 19:50Speaker 2: Chrome in your bookmarks, you can seamlessly pick up where
- 19:52Speaker 2: you were left off in Chrome on your Mac or
- 19:54Speaker 2: on your iPad or on your iPhone. Sharing between them
- 19:59Speaker 2: is pretty seamless. The air drop and the iCloud and
- 20:02Speaker 2: stuff like that. So it's a great ecosystem, but it's
- 20:07Speaker 2: it's kind of once you're in, it's a little culty.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Well why right, It's like, once you're in, you're in,
- 20:14Speaker 2: and it's not very easy to get out without some
- 20:16Speaker 2: pain and suffering.
- 20:17Speaker 1: So I think that's kind of what justin uh. And
- 20:21Speaker 1: you know, he's not here to defend himself, but I
- 20:23Speaker 1: think that's kind of why he feels that way because
- 20:26Speaker 1: he's been around, you know, those users at work where
- 20:30Speaker 1: he has worked that were strictly iPhone. That was that
- 20:35Speaker 1: was a iPhone iPad, you know, Mac, that's the way
- 20:38Speaker 1: it was. And you know, he came from a Windows environment,
- 20:42Speaker 1: and he may have had been an Apple user for
- 20:44Speaker 1: a little while too, and you know he may have
- 20:47Speaker 1: had to break out of that.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, yeah, my my in laws have Android.
- 20:52Speaker 2: They have the newest Pixel. My my brother and sister
- 20:55Speaker 2: in law have Pixels. I've got other friends that are
- 20:58Speaker 2: adamant that they'll never buy an Apple device for Apple Phone, gotcha.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I really wouldn't mind the Neo. I mean the Neo.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I think that would be a good starting ground for
- 21:11Speaker 1: somebody who decides maybe I want to try try the Mac.
- 21:14Speaker 1: I want to see what how that software could work
- 21:16Speaker 1: for me.
- 21:17Speaker 2: I think I think what you're going to see with
- 21:19Speaker 2: the Neo is I think it's going to be a
- 21:23Speaker 2: education level Chromebook killer. Yeah, I think it's enough of
- 21:27Speaker 2: a jump from a Chromebook that you get a little
- 21:29Speaker 2: bit of a better performance boost. It's price right for education,
- 21:34Speaker 2: it's got the Mac. It's it's a it's a it's
- 21:37Speaker 2: a little bit more beat up. You're gonna use it
- 21:39Speaker 2: a little bit more.
- 21:41Speaker 1: But only the only thing is the difference in price, though,
- 21:44Speaker 1: because you can buy a basic Chromebook, you know, a
- 21:48Speaker 1: basic educational laptop for about three hundred and forty nine dollars,
- 21:54Speaker 1: where you you're going to spend ab what at six
- 21:56Speaker 1: hundred for you're gonna being six hundred dollars for this one.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Yeah, but have you try Have you used chromebook? They're
- 22:08Speaker 2: they're so slow and dog and once you put them
- 22:10Speaker 2: into enrollment and emine management and stuff, they just get
- 22:14Speaker 2: so god awful slow.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Over the speed increase, it's certainly worth it for the Neo, Yeah,
- 22:19Speaker 1: I think so.
- 22:20Speaker 2: And you know I've used Neo and the it's weird
- 22:25Speaker 2: to use it. There's a couple. There's a few different
- 22:28Speaker 2: things that I when I got when I have my
- 22:29Speaker 2: hands on my coworker, my co worker bought a day one. Right,
- 22:34Speaker 2: there's no back let keyboard.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Oh that's right, yeah, right, So.
- 22:39Speaker 2: There's no light coming through the letters on the keyboard.
- 22:42Speaker 2: So in the dark it's really hard to see. Now
- 22:44Speaker 2: he's got the Cobalt version, which is the darker bluish
- 22:47Speaker 2: gray version, and it's impossible to see the keys, Oh
- 22:50Speaker 2: boy at night. And the other the other weird thing
- 22:55Speaker 2: was to they call it the side firing speakers, right,
- 22:59Speaker 2: so the speakers or not, you know, on new other MacBooks,
- 23:02Speaker 2: like the speakers are either up up by the screen
- 23:05Speaker 2: or along the side of the surf like the keyboard surface.
- 23:09Speaker 2: This one there actually there's like grooves along the sides
- 23:13Speaker 2: of the of the chassis that the sound comes out
- 23:16Speaker 2: the sides like the left and the right side right.
- 23:19Speaker 2: So if you're a normal typer, and if you can
- 23:21Speaker 2: see my hands, like your hands are straight out right,
- 23:24Speaker 2: so you're typing, So if you're typing while you're listening
- 23:26Speaker 2: to music or something. I sat down at my coworker's
- 23:30Speaker 2: neo and and was just typing, you know, check, going
- 23:33Speaker 2: to Google, just played around and I was like, man,
- 23:35Speaker 2: why does this sound so weird? Because he was like touting, Oh,
- 23:38Speaker 2: this sounds it's the best sounding MacBook I've ever heard,
- 23:42Speaker 2: and I'm using it, and I don't know if I'm
- 23:45Speaker 2: a chicken winger or what right? But when I type
- 23:49Speaker 2: on a keyboard, well, I armed, my elbows are out
- 23:52Speaker 2: to my sides, right. So as soon as I put
- 23:55Speaker 2: my arms onto the knee yah, if you're following along
- 23:58Speaker 2: eighty and I are book around, so I'm I'm a
- 24:02Speaker 2: I rest like my forearms on the keyboard and then
- 24:05Speaker 2: type right, so I I fat palm the key, the keypad,
- 24:09Speaker 2: all the track pad, all the time. As soon as
- 24:12Speaker 2: I put my arms down over the edge of the computer,
- 24:17Speaker 2: it completely changed the dynamic of the sound because my
- 24:21Speaker 2: arms were over the edges and the sound was now
- 24:23Speaker 2: going either forward or backwards and not out to the
- 24:27Speaker 2: sides anymore because they had to go around my arms. Yep.
- 24:31Speaker 2: And it changed. It changed the dynamic, changed the way
- 24:34Speaker 2: I heard spoken word, It changed the way I heard
- 24:36Speaker 2: the music, and it was driving me nuts. I couldn't
- 24:38Speaker 2: figure out why it sounded like crape. And then I
- 24:41Speaker 2: picked up my arms. I was like, oh, that sounds better. Oh,
- 24:43Speaker 2: and then I put my arms back down, picked my
- 24:45Speaker 2: arms back up, so I don't know it. For me,
- 24:48Speaker 2: that was enough for me to go I don't It
- 24:50Speaker 2: was a it was a weird like audio visual thing
- 24:53Speaker 2: where I was trying to like listening to something on
- 24:55Speaker 2: the screen, I'm going, why does this sound weird? Oh?
- 24:58Speaker 2: Moving my arms changed the the way I was hearing
- 25:01Speaker 2: and perceiving the audio from the neo and it was weird.
- 25:05Speaker 1: So all right, we're gonna take quick break. We come
- 25:08Speaker 1: back listener questions. We've got a couple of great ones
- 25:10Speaker 1: today we'll we'll share with you. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm
- 25:13Speaker 1: Sean de Weird.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Find us on the web at tech talk radio dot
- 25:15Speaker 2: com or your favorite podcasting platform.
- 25:17Speaker 1: We'll bear back now back to tech talk Radio.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Welcome back to tech talk Radio. Uh Hello. This segment
- 25:27Speaker 2: is one I always like, and we always get some
- 25:29Speaker 2: of the best questions from our viewers.
- 25:31Speaker 1: We've been ley.
- 25:32Speaker 2: We've got some great some great people out there, and
- 25:35Speaker 2: they ask really we spend whole segments talking about one
- 25:38Speaker 2: question and like sometimes sometimes they don't even get an answer,
- 25:41Speaker 2: or they get a million answers. It's great, hi, and
- 25:45Speaker 2: we get positives. It's great when you talk to somebody
- 25:49Speaker 2: about one of their questions and then they write back
- 25:51Speaker 2: saying how much they like. They're like, oh, the answer
- 25:53Speaker 2: was great, and like I think I feel like we
- 25:55Speaker 2: should bring somebody on the show that ask the questions
- 25:57Speaker 2: I do.
- 25:57Speaker 1: I also like the questions and feel free to drop
- 25:59Speaker 1: us align anytime. It's tech guys at tech talk radio
- 26:03Speaker 1: dot com. Because we post a lot of the videos
- 26:06Speaker 1: up on socials, whether it be YouTube, TikTok and some
- 26:11Speaker 1: of that. There's some great minds out there. They'll go
- 26:13Speaker 1: on there and they'll actually give us their thoughts. And
- 26:16Speaker 1: you know, we've answered a question before and we've had
- 26:19Speaker 1: a couple of people jump in and I go, oh,
- 26:20Speaker 1: that makes sense too. Yeah, that's actually a good so
- 26:23Speaker 1: and we'll share that on the show too. So you know,
- 26:25Speaker 1: sometimes it's it's you know, combination of mind sometimes come
- 26:28Speaker 1: up with a better way and through experience of actually
- 26:31Speaker 1: doing this stuff.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Yeah. So today's question comes from Laura all Right in Tucson,
- 26:36Speaker 2: and she says, Hi, I have a potential question for
- 26:39Speaker 2: the show. I'm going to be traveling and originally wanted
- 26:41Speaker 2: to get a laptop so I could work well away
- 26:43Speaker 2: for two weeks, but now I was thinking I could
- 26:45Speaker 2: be able to do it on a tablet. I connect
- 26:47Speaker 2: to a PC at work through a VPN. They set
- 26:49Speaker 2: up what would be better at tablet or laptop. The
- 26:53Speaker 2: one I have now is a seventeen inch screen HP
- 26:55Speaker 2: that is super heavy. Your suggestions Laura and Tucson.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Ooh wow, so you're my question.
- 27:04Speaker 2: My question would be the first one is are you
- 27:07Speaker 2: doing the work? Like do you connect to the VPN
- 27:11Speaker 2: and do your work through the VPN or are you
- 27:14Speaker 2: remote desktopping into a computer that you're doing the work on.
- 27:19Speaker 1: I think it's remote desktopping this way, if that would.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Be like that would be see pretty impossible on a tablet, yeah,
- 27:29Speaker 2: because I've done remote desktopping, and sure, if you use
- 27:34Speaker 2: the app, it's great, you can full screen and it
- 27:36Speaker 2: feels like you're running a regular computer. But I just
- 27:39Speaker 2: don't know how natural would unless.
- 27:41Speaker 1: The program that Laura is using is an app. So
- 27:46Speaker 1: like if she connects to her desktop and she has
- 27:51Speaker 1: to open an app and she opens that normally on
- 27:54Speaker 1: her desktop, then she would be doing that there. But
- 27:57Speaker 1: then you have to think about this. Keep you know,
- 28:01Speaker 1: to tablets to tablet you know, yeah, you've got the
- 28:04Speaker 1: on screen keyboard. It's not the same as sitting at
- 28:07Speaker 1: a desk with a keyboard. Yeah, you could have a
- 28:09Speaker 1: bluetooth keyboard a Logitech makes a great keyboard for working
- 28:13Speaker 1: with your tablets, whether it be you know, an iPad
- 28:16Speaker 1: or a Samsung tablet. But I yeah, I don't know
- 28:21Speaker 1: about that.
- 28:22Speaker 2: But a seventeen inch HP that's huge.
- 28:24Speaker 1: That is that's free good, that's a behemoth.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Of a laptop, right, Yeah, So slimming down your laptop
- 28:31Speaker 2: maybe to a thirteen or fourteen inch, right, Because Like,
- 28:34Speaker 2: if I think about the way I work remotely, If
- 28:36Speaker 2: I'm working remotely, it's like I connect to the VPN
- 28:39Speaker 2: and then I can just get to all the web
- 28:42Speaker 2: the web URLs I need to eternally through Chrome, I
- 28:46Speaker 2: can do all my work. That way. I can see
- 28:48Speaker 2: stuff on our internal network at work, the same way
- 28:52Speaker 2: I would if I was sitting at my computer at
- 28:54Speaker 2: works versus remote desktopping to my computer at work, which
- 28:59Speaker 2: just seems like five extra steps to get. Like it's
- 29:03Speaker 2: I don't want to remote connect to remote connect to
- 29:07Speaker 2: a computer, if that makes sense. Right. So if you
- 29:10Speaker 2: can achieve everything you can just by using a web
- 29:13Speaker 2: browser and you're doing that kind of work, but if
- 29:15Speaker 2: you're controlling another PC, I feel like i'd want just
- 29:19Speaker 2: for a visualizer, right, for a little bit more robust hardware.
- 29:23Speaker 2: And also if you're remote, right, the other thing you
- 29:26Speaker 2: have to rely on is are you gonna have stable
- 29:28Speaker 2: internet everywhere you go?
- 29:30Speaker 1: Oh?
- 29:30Speaker 2: Yeah, right, so you're traveling, great, no problem, right, Okay,
- 29:34Speaker 2: you get to a hotel and their WiFi is two
- 29:37Speaker 2: meg up, five meg down or something stupid? Right? Right?
- 29:41Speaker 2: Is that enough to control your remote desktop with the
- 29:45Speaker 2: with the quality that you need to see to be
- 29:46Speaker 2: able to do your work? Right? Okay, maybe you have Starlink,
- 29:50Speaker 2: Maybe you have Starlink Mobile. You can get five six
- 29:53Speaker 2: hundred meg or a little bit less and reliable like fine, great,
- 29:58Speaker 2: But if you're traveling, it's hard, right, you're so up
- 30:04Speaker 2: in the air with Okay, well if you need to work, okay,
- 30:06Speaker 2: well now I'm hot spotting my phone and then I'm
- 30:10Speaker 2: connecting to the VPN through my phone and it's just
- 30:13Speaker 2: you're on. It's harder to be reliable with with traveling.
- 30:16Speaker 2: So you got to keep that in mind too, right.
- 30:18Speaker 2: So unless you're know you're going to have dedicated good
- 30:21Speaker 2: internet everywhere, right, you just got to keep that in
- 30:23Speaker 2: mind too.
- 30:24Speaker 1: So, and lit'sten to it. If she's carrying around a
- 30:27Speaker 1: seventeen inch eh, laspop that is very it's go being heavy.
- 30:33Speaker 1: The the A sixteen that we looked at from a
- 30:36Speaker 1: SEUs that weighs about two and a half pounds. I'm
- 30:41Speaker 1: not kidding, Sean.
- 30:41Speaker 2: I can't.
- 30:42Speaker 1: I can't tell, you know. I picked this laptop up
- 30:45Speaker 1: and I what's in it? I'm like it, it feels
- 30:48Speaker 1: like there's nothing in it. I mean that's the new
- 30:51Speaker 1: you know, kind of the new idea. There's other laptops
- 30:54Speaker 1: on the market that might weigh about three pounds, maybe
- 30:58Speaker 1: three and a half pounds. That as far as a laptop,
- 31:01Speaker 1: I wouldn't go with a twelve inch If I'm doing
- 31:03Speaker 1: remote work, I want to have at least a fifteen
- 31:06Speaker 1: or sixteen inch screen.
- 31:08Speaker 2: So, right in my experience rights as somebody who's worked
- 31:12Speaker 2: as a video professional for the last two decades, I
- 31:16Speaker 2: always felt like I needed a seventeen inch screen. Like
- 31:18Speaker 2: I was like, Oh, I need all the real estate
- 31:20Speaker 2: I can get to do all my video editing and
- 31:21Speaker 2: my photo editing, et cetera. Right, and sure, maybe back
- 31:25Speaker 2: when seventeen inch MacBooks were the rage, and they required
- 31:29Speaker 2: an immense amount of power, and you know, they had
- 31:32Speaker 2: to be that bake, so they could cool. You know,
- 31:34Speaker 2: they used themselves as their own alumin heat think back
- 31:37Speaker 2: in the day, sure, great, But as time has progressed
- 31:41Speaker 2: and the editing software has gotten better and more streamlined
- 31:44Speaker 2: for smaller resolutions, higher bit depth and higher pixel debt density.
- 31:51Speaker 2: But larger resolutions or smaller resolutions, I mean, they've gotten better.
- 31:57Speaker 2: So I don't think I I would tell my past self,
- 32:02Speaker 2: you don't need anything more than fourteen inch right right.
- 32:06Speaker 2: I work on a MacBook Book Pro, but it's a
- 32:11Speaker 2: thirteen inch I think maybe it's fourteen inch. I don't know.
- 32:15Speaker 2: It's what's the smallest MacBook Pro you can get. I
- 32:18Speaker 2: do have a cinema display at work that I connect
- 32:20Speaker 2: too when I sit down. Oh there you go, an
- 32:22Speaker 2: older cinema display. So I a thunderbolt to the cinema
- 32:25Speaker 2: display and I can have two screens at the same time.
- 32:27Speaker 2: But it's the convenience of being able to slide it
- 32:29Speaker 2: into my backpack and carry it and not feel like
- 32:33Speaker 2: I'm being burdened by a behemoth. Yeah. Yeah, and especially
- 32:38Speaker 2: if you're traveling and okay, you want to get some
- 32:40Speaker 2: remote work done. Okay, you're at a coffee shop or
- 32:43Speaker 2: you're you know, sitting at the table in an RV,
- 32:45Speaker 2: which aren't necessarily that big, or you're trying to sit
- 32:48Speaker 2: at the hotel desk, which aren't always that big. It's
- 32:51Speaker 2: the seventeen inches that's huge, Like that's a behemoth. So
- 32:55Speaker 2: maybe considered downscaling your your laptop size to a smaller one. Again,
- 33:02Speaker 2: not out, not ruling out a tablet, just you have
- 33:05Speaker 2: to you have to look at the workflow of how
- 33:08Speaker 2: you're connecting to things, right, what about trying Yeah, what.
- 33:11Speaker 1: About this idea? I was just thinking about the surface,
- 33:14Speaker 1: you know, Microsoft Surface, which is basically you know, Windows
- 33:18Speaker 1: basically on the tablet. You know. I again, I've not
- 33:21Speaker 1: used the surface, so I don't.
- 33:23Speaker 2: I have right, So it depends again it depends. Surfaces
- 33:27Speaker 2: are prohibit they are prohibitively expensive. Surf Microsoft services are expensive,
- 33:33Speaker 2: and they're actually almost phasing them out.
- 33:34Speaker 1: If you if you.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Look got to the surface website, like the surface is
- 33:37Speaker 2: it wasn't a niche product for a long time. In education,
- 33:40Speaker 2: it's served it's served a purpose in education. We have
- 33:43Speaker 2: several that we use, but they're phasing out, Like the
- 33:47Speaker 2: olid ones are kind of just not a thing anymore. Right,
- 33:50Speaker 2: It's like people don't want. Desktops are a thing for
- 33:54Speaker 2: certain avenues, Like there's a niche market for desktop machines now.
- 33:59Speaker 2: So I don't know if a service would be. You
- 34:01Speaker 2: could get a service, but you might not be able
- 34:03Speaker 2: to get one. You might able to find what you
- 34:04Speaker 2: want for the price for the price point you want, right,
- 34:07Speaker 2: But again, workflow it figure out if the tablet's gonna work.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Right if you're working just in data entry and you're
- 34:17Speaker 2: doing web based you know, HTML five based stuff where
- 34:21Speaker 2: you can be in web browsers and do it all
- 34:22Speaker 2: for your web browsers, maybe that's going to be fine
- 34:25Speaker 2: on a tablet. But I just don't know if you're
- 34:28Speaker 2: going to get the experience.
- 34:30Speaker 1: All right, here's something something else. And you know, I
- 34:33Speaker 1: kind of wonder about this before you go and buy
- 34:37Speaker 1: a laptop or a tablet, do you. Obviously it sounds
- 34:42Speaker 1: to me like you have an IT person. If you've
- 34:45Speaker 1: got a VPN and you've been able to connect you
- 34:48Speaker 1: know previously there's somebody that controls like the IT experience
- 34:53Speaker 1: at work. Talk to the IT person if you can
- 34:57Speaker 1: get a chance just to sit down with them and say, listen, yeah,
- 35:00Speaker 1: I get this. This laptop this is a behemoth. I
- 35:02Speaker 1: wanted to downsize. What would you recommend? Maybe even ask
- 35:05Speaker 1: them if a tablet could work in your environment, because
- 35:10Speaker 1: there may be limitations. There may be you know, things
- 35:13Speaker 1: that you're you're not we're not considering here that could
- 35:17Speaker 1: affect how you're gonna be able to work. If you're
- 35:19Speaker 1: you know, working Romote.
- 35:20Speaker 2: The last thing you want to do is get get go,
- 35:22Speaker 2: get go, buy a tablet. And then your IT department says, yeah,
- 35:25Speaker 2: you can't run the VPN on that, yeah, or something
- 35:28Speaker 2: something along those lines. Right, It's like it doesn't run
- 35:30Speaker 2: Windows and you can only have Windows devices or so
- 35:33Speaker 2: forth to on. So you may want to get all
- 35:35Speaker 2: your your own IT department also, Yeah, and as a
- 35:39Speaker 2: fellow IT professional, they love answering these kind.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Of questions, right, so yeah, yeah, even if the IT
- 35:46Speaker 1: people are like those two guys in War Games if
- 35:49Speaker 1: you remember War Games, Yeah, that was that was the
- 35:52Speaker 1: epitome of ice. Although there was that that show Amanda told,
- 35:56Speaker 1: Turn Me Onto that Crowd, the Egg Crowd the It
- 36:00Speaker 1: Out on BBC. Just just a great show. I love
- 36:03Speaker 1: that one. That was good all right, So hopefully that
- 36:06Speaker 1: could that could help Laura out let us know which
- 36:09Speaker 1: route you end up going, and you know. If you
- 36:11Speaker 1: need any advice on specific bottles, feel free to reach
- 36:15Speaker 1: out to us because I know that Lenovo Asus, you
- 36:20Speaker 1: know who's some of the big players.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Don't discount MacBook Air right if you're traveling, a MacBook
- 36:27Speaker 2: Air is such, it's it's small, it's light, it's fast. Well,
- 36:31Speaker 2: an M five, a M five MacBook Air is going
- 36:33Speaker 2: to do. It's going to be incredible for something like this.
- 36:35Speaker 2: All right.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Well here's the thing though, What if she's in a
- 36:37Speaker 1: PC in her face at her desktop at work, could
- 36:41Speaker 1: a mac beear MacBook Air connect and run an app?
- 36:44Speaker 2: You can't. So you can get Microsoft Remote Desktop from
- 36:48Speaker 2: the Apple Store. So yes, I do it all the
- 36:51Speaker 2: time at work. It runs it. You can run remote
- 36:54Speaker 2: Desktop as an app. It works great. I've done it,
- 37:00Speaker 2: so yes, you can't do it on a Mac.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Anytime you have a question, feel free to reach out
- 37:04Speaker 1: to us tech guys at tech talk radio dot com
- 37:08Speaker 1: if we can answer it for you, We certainly will.
- 37:10Speaker 1: We've got another one standing by that we will take
- 37:12Speaker 1: on and brand new product, really cool product, especially if
- 37:16Speaker 1: you like shooting video. I know, Sean, that's right up
- 37:19Speaker 1: your alley.
- 37:20Speaker 2: And we've talked about their competitors. Oh yeaeshow So we'll.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Do that with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Sean to Word. You can find us on Facebook at
- 37:29Speaker 2: tech Talkers Will Grow.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Back and now fact to tech Talk Radio.
- 37:34Speaker 2: We talked a little bit about a new product that
- 37:36Speaker 2: we're going to talk about. Oh yeah, and this is
- 37:39Speaker 2: a good one, and I like, I want to talk
- 37:41Speaker 2: about it because I like to do the video and
- 37:43Speaker 2: the photography stuff because it's like it's it's part of
- 37:45Speaker 2: my world. It's something I've been in for a long
- 37:47Speaker 2: time for years. Right. Dji has kind of strangle held
- 37:53Speaker 2: the market on a few different technology pieces, right, one
- 37:56Speaker 2: of those being the stabilized handheld camera, the gimbal right,
- 38:01Speaker 2: the gimbal, the gimbal, the handheld gimbal right mobile, the
- 38:04Speaker 2: Osmo also the handheld the Osmo mobile, and then the
- 38:09Speaker 2: Osmo pocket, uh, and then the dj I pocket.
- 38:13Speaker 1: They basically Dji the first John or was it GoPro
- 38:18Speaker 1: or do we do we know?
- 38:19Speaker 2: Oh, they've kind of all blended together over the years.
- 38:23Speaker 2: GoPro had their own little one that worked with Gilpro
- 38:28Speaker 2: like their Drone it didn't do very well. So but
- 38:32Speaker 2: Dji has kind of been the one, right and they've
- 38:36Speaker 2: just owned the pocket gimbal camera market. But instad three
- 38:39Speaker 2: sixty has caught up significantly and out of nowhere. Like
- 38:43Speaker 2: it was like Dji everything right, and then all of
- 38:45Speaker 2: a sudden instant three sixty came can just kind of
- 38:49Speaker 2: came in and just exploded because they've been doing a
- 38:52Speaker 2: ton with three sixty cameras, right, like the X four.
- 38:57Speaker 2: They're now doing a direct challenge with the pocket Osmo
- 39:00Speaker 2: world in that pocket handheld gimbal mode with the Luna Ultra.
- 39:04Speaker 2: That's what they're calling this, the lun Ultra. It's a
- 39:08Speaker 2: Leika co engineered pocket camera. Now, for those who don't know,
- 39:12Speaker 2: Laika is a German a German photography company that is
- 39:16Speaker 2: known for its superior glass. It's superior lensing and something
- 39:19Speaker 2: like that. Right, So you have two powerhouse companies in
- 39:24Speaker 2: the camera world, Hostile Blood and Leika. Oh yeah, and
- 39:29Speaker 2: they are on They are now competing for the same market,
- 39:32Speaker 2: right because the DJI pocket osmal stuff is with Hostile
- 39:35Speaker 2: Blood and I think they did some stuff with Seiss,
- 39:38Speaker 2: but the Hostile Blod stuff is incredible right, they're known
- 39:41Speaker 2: for their medium format cameras stuff like that. But so
- 39:45Speaker 2: this looks like it was designed specifically to try and
- 39:47Speaker 2: steal DJI customers. Right. It's so, what exactly is the
- 39:51Speaker 2: Luna Ultra, who's it for and will it actually move
- 39:54Speaker 2: the will it be a competitor? Right? So what from.
- 39:58Speaker 1: Everything we've been seeing so far far with this the
- 40:00Speaker 1: Luna Ultra, it looks like it certainly could be.
- 40:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, it really has.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Some great features until you put it into real world testing.
- 40:10Speaker 1: But into three sixty is kind of you know, they've
- 40:13Speaker 1: they've built a great name for them.
- 40:15Speaker 2: So they've got the they've got the influencer following, right,
- 40:18Speaker 2: They've got they are the Kleenex of the key of
- 40:23Speaker 2: like the influencer world. Right, It's like it's just tissue, right,
- 40:26Speaker 2: But everybody knows it's Kleenex, right, But it's a brand. Right.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Everybody knows that if you're shooting something for as an influencer,
- 40:34Speaker 2: you're using Instant three sixty. Right. It's that's just kind
- 40:37Speaker 2: of the staple. It's become a you're an influencer, you
- 40:40Speaker 2: shoot with an Instant three sixty. It's kind of becoming
- 40:43Speaker 2: the the standard for that's what you're seeing, right. It's
- 40:47Speaker 2: just because they they they latched onto the three sixty
- 40:52Speaker 2: view and they kind of made the workflow work and
- 40:55Speaker 2: made it easy to do to shoot on a three
- 40:58Speaker 2: sixty camera and made it easy to edit, to break down,
- 41:03Speaker 2: to control the content, to put it up. GoPro and
- 41:08Speaker 2: Dji struggled to make it a user experience. So I
- 41:14Speaker 2: feel like, if it's easy and it's fast, that's going
- 41:17Speaker 2: to take a lot of people, right.
- 41:21Speaker 1: You know, here's the thing when you think when social
- 41:24Speaker 1: media just started erupting, and you know, we started to
- 41:28Speaker 1: hear the term influencers, you know, it was people with
- 41:33Speaker 1: great graphics, you know, great image and then we started
- 41:36Speaker 1: getting into the video world and people were basically on
- 41:39Speaker 1: their webcam, you know, just looking it right directly to
- 41:43Speaker 1: the camera. And as that's progressed, we've seen some really
- 41:47Speaker 1: creative creators that are out there that are doing so
- 41:51Speaker 1: much cool stuff with video and whether they're using the
- 41:54Speaker 1: tools of the trade, whether they're using you know, like Adobe,
- 41:57Speaker 1: or they're using Da Vinci or the you know, the
- 42:00Speaker 1: using some of the many other software programs that are
- 42:03Speaker 1: out there. There have been some creators who've done. They're
- 42:05Speaker 1: doing even more with video now, even surpassing I'm just
- 42:09Speaker 1: gonna say it, surpassing what they might see on broadcasts
- 42:13Speaker 1: as far as brad Can television, doing it in social format.
- 42:17Speaker 1: And now they are looking for quality like like a
- 42:20Speaker 1: Houseleblod you know, some of the even Sony. You know,
- 42:24Speaker 1: they're looking for the quality to create these videos because
- 42:28Speaker 1: a bad video, if it looks bad, will cause a scroll.
- 42:34Speaker 2: In.
- 42:34Speaker 1: With so many videos out there, you've got ten seconds
- 42:38Speaker 1: sometimes five to grab somebody. And if your video looks
- 42:41Speaker 1: good and it's compelling and the quality of the video
- 42:45Speaker 1: is good, these these creators that I've seen on here,
- 42:49Speaker 1: I just go, wow, this stuff is great.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Yeah. So what is the lun Ultra right? Yeah, so
- 42:56Speaker 2: it's it's the three sixties first dedicated handheld cable camera. Right,
- 43:00Speaker 2: so they get their their first not three sixty camera.
- 43:05Speaker 2: It's got three access stabilized gimbal, the dual like engineered cameras,
- 43:10Speaker 2: eight K compatible recording, eight K right, AI subject tracking,
- 43:15Speaker 2: which I've never The AI is just it's a buzzword
- 43:18Speaker 2: for this at this point. It says a detachable touchscreen controller.
- 43:22Speaker 2: So I have to look into that a little bit more,
- 43:25Speaker 2: but the Verge said that they kind of quoted it
- 43:27Speaker 2: as like the hybrid between a DJ Pocket Osmo and
- 43:30Speaker 2: a miniature cinema camera, so being able to do some
- 43:33Speaker 2: cool stuff. Right, So the dual camera system, it's it's
- 43:36Speaker 2: a one inch main sensor, one inch main sensor. That's insane. Yeah, right,
- 43:41Speaker 2: So it's it's gonna be bigger than the Pocket Osmo. Right,
- 43:45Speaker 2: So if if you're looking for miniature, like the Pocket
- 43:48Speaker 2: Osmo is still going to be your smallest. The Osmo
- 43:52Speaker 2: is a little bit bigger, but the Pocket DJ Pocket
- 43:56Speaker 2: is a little bit smaller. And it says it has
- 44:00Speaker 2: dedicated telephoto camera with optical zoom, which optical zoom is
- 44:06Speaker 2: clearly a benefit, right because you're not gaining you're not
- 44:09Speaker 2: adding any digital noise or pixels or whatever. But it
- 44:14Speaker 2: says it can do eight k at thirty frames a second. Wow,
- 44:19Speaker 2: this is crazy. And they'll say it'll do ten bit
- 44:22Speaker 2: log which is crazy for an editor to be able
- 44:24Speaker 2: to have that level of color quality. And then it
- 44:28Speaker 2: has a custom like a color profile, so you're getting
- 44:32Speaker 2: a you're getting a tried and true color platform that
- 44:37Speaker 2: Laika is known for.
- 44:38Speaker 1: For somebody who doesn't know, like, all right, so you've
- 44:41Speaker 1: got this gimbal, you've got it's handheld, and you got
- 44:45Speaker 1: the camera that's on it if you were walking behind somebody,
- 44:49Speaker 1: you know, or walking to an event. And the problem
- 44:52Speaker 1: is before, if you did it on a smartphone, you'd
- 44:54Speaker 1: see the camera movie. You know, it's like bouncy bouncy bouncy.
- 44:58Speaker 1: With this with the gimmel, it provides it's a stable
- 45:01Speaker 1: you know, stabilization for the shot, so you don't get
- 45:04Speaker 1: that feeling. And I walked it somewhere. It's just you're
- 45:06Speaker 1: gliding over there. I saw one. I saw a creator
- 45:10Speaker 1: the other day, and you know, normally you would think
- 45:13Speaker 1: they would acquire it through through a through a drone
- 45:17Speaker 1: shot where a drone flies through a restaurant, goes through
- 45:20Speaker 1: a door, goes through. No, instead, it's somebody basically on
- 45:24Speaker 1: roller skates holding it and skating through the different areas
- 45:29Speaker 1: and holding the gimbal, and it just looked amazing. The
- 45:32Speaker 1: footage was great. So this gives you that freedom, that flow,
- 45:35Speaker 1: that that stabilization so you don't have shaky shots. And
- 45:39Speaker 1: it's good quality. I mean that's good.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Yeah. So I'm reading a little bit more about this
- 45:46Speaker 2: detachable OLED screen. Yeah, all right, it's a two inch
- 45:50Speaker 2: oil any touch screen that can detach and become a
- 45:53Speaker 2: wireless remote with live monitoring. How is that?
- 45:59Speaker 1: Like?
- 46:00Speaker 2: What that's insane?
- 46:03Speaker 1: So that means that somebody like if you had a director,
- 46:06Speaker 1: you know, so yeah.
- 46:07Speaker 2: Or if you're trying to do or if you're you
- 46:09Speaker 2: set it up and you want to control it, so
- 46:11Speaker 2: better self solo filming, self recording is easier. Flexible camera placement,
- 46:18Speaker 2: yea right. The only thing, the only thing that they
- 46:20Speaker 2: could knock this out of the park with is they
- 46:22Speaker 2: added the ability to control more than one.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Well, yeah, like a like a switcher almost.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Yeah, So imagine being able to place the camera across
- 46:32Speaker 2: the room and framing it from my hand, right, framing
- 46:37Speaker 2: up for interviews, framing up for But that's something dj
- 46:40Speaker 2: doesn't offer, right, That's not something you can do with
- 46:42Speaker 2: the DJI right now. So I feel like they don't
- 46:44Speaker 2: offer an equivalent.
- 46:46Speaker 1: How about pricing on it? We've seen it. It's gonna
- 46:48Speaker 1: be under eight hundred bucks. Is that kind of incline
- 46:53Speaker 1: that's for a stabilized.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Eight K camera? Yeah, that's right about where it's at.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Seven seventy so it's it's positioned as a premium creator
- 47:02Speaker 2: tool right now, right, but it's not ideal, right, So
- 47:07Speaker 2: obviously there's cons right, it's not ideal for if you
- 47:12Speaker 2: need if you're if you're a rugged if you're doing
- 47:15Speaker 2: anything rugged outdoorsy weather related, or if if you need
- 47:19Speaker 2: waterproof not it. Yeah, and it's not budget friendly. So
- 47:23Speaker 2: at seven hundred and seventy bucks, right zoo.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Well, I also wonder too, you know, we've seen DJI,
- 47:32Speaker 1: We've seen you know, some of the other companies have
- 47:35Speaker 1: been affected by you know, the inability to be able
- 47:39Speaker 1: to import into the country. This does not fall under that,
- 47:43Speaker 1: but this one from Insto three sixty, So that will
- 47:45Speaker 1: be available here in the United States. So for anybody
- 47:48Speaker 1: who listening here, they should be able to buy that, correct,
- 47:51Speaker 1: because I'm not going to have those those limitations, at
- 47:54Speaker 1: least that's what I was seeing that you know, it
- 47:56Speaker 1: would be available, So I'm hoping that will be the case.
- 47:58Speaker 1: But to three sixty is you know, if you're ever
- 48:01Speaker 1: driving down the road and you're wondering, why is that
- 48:04Speaker 1: stick sticking up out of that RV on the end
- 48:07Speaker 1: of that stick as a camera and it's capturing three
- 48:10Speaker 1: hundred and sixty degrees.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Right, which which I was talking about a little bit earlier,
- 48:14Speaker 2: was that instant three sixty has made it so you
- 48:17Speaker 2: can just stick an eight stick a three sixty camera
- 48:20Speaker 2: up right, and then you get into their editing platform
- 48:23Speaker 2: and you could pick and choose what you're seeing out
- 48:25Speaker 2: of that three sixty and use it right. You've anybody
- 48:28Speaker 2: that's watched YouTube has seen it where they show an
- 48:31Speaker 2: angle and then all a sudden you can see a
- 48:32Speaker 2: different angle, and then they pan and swish and move.
- 48:36Speaker 2: It's it's an interesting concept that I've worked with. I've
- 48:40Speaker 2: worked within the three sixty world. I've done time lapses
- 48:43Speaker 2: with it and stuff, and it's it wasn't easy to
- 48:46Speaker 2: break into that, but if you did it well, you
- 48:51Speaker 2: have to edit the content down right, there's no benefit
- 48:54Speaker 2: to try and get somebody to try and watch Live
- 48:56Speaker 2: three or sixty get content right. I tried it. It's
- 49:00Speaker 2: impossible for somebody on their phone, Like everybody's doing it
- 49:03Speaker 2: on their phones, right, So imagine trying to curate Live
- 49:06Speaker 2: three sixty content and all of a sudden you have
- 49:08Speaker 2: people try to watch it, spending their phone around and
- 49:12Speaker 2: doing all this weird stuff. So it's not curated for
- 49:15Speaker 2: live content. So I'm curious to see where they go
- 49:20Speaker 2: with that, and they're clearly they're clearly aiming for a
- 49:25Speaker 2: piece of the market that DGIS has had a firm
- 49:27Speaker 2: grasp on since they announced the Osmo back in twenty fourteen,
- 49:32Speaker 2: twenty thirteen, even maybe even a little bittterer than that. Right, So,
- 49:37Speaker 2: the Osmo has been a fantastic platform. And you know,
- 49:41Speaker 2: the the thing that I so talk about the Osthmo,
- 49:43Speaker 2: the thing that they didn't mention with the Instant three
- 49:46Speaker 2: sixty is any capability of being able to do live
- 49:49Speaker 2: streaming from it. So can you from there do an
- 49:54Speaker 2: RTMP stream or connect to Facebook or connect to from
- 49:58Speaker 2: the pocket. I'm not sure, So I'll have to look
- 50:01Speaker 2: into that to see if there's Because some of the
- 50:04Speaker 2: older Osmo's versions through the app and through the phone,
- 50:07Speaker 2: if you connected it to your phone, you could live
- 50:09Speaker 2: stream a stream from two in RTNP feed or so
- 50:14Speaker 2: I'm just currying out mental with that up because that's
- 50:16Speaker 2: not something it's mentioned in any of the articles I
- 50:18Speaker 2: was reading about it.
- 50:21Speaker 1: Right, Well, if you want to get more info, you
- 50:23Speaker 1: jump on the web, go to insta I n s
- 50:27Speaker 1: t A three sixty dot com. You'll find out about
- 50:31Speaker 1: the app as well as the different programs. I want
- 50:34Speaker 1: to say too, something that I saw this week. I
- 50:37Speaker 1: have a you know, Dji Mini drone. I had no
- 50:40Speaker 1: idea that on the smartphone with the Dji app, you
- 50:44Speaker 1: can actually fly practice drone flights. I don't know if
- 50:48Speaker 1: you've known this, because I know you don't. You have
- 50:50Speaker 1: one too. You have a Dji, don't you? I do, yeah,
- 50:53Speaker 1: And I was flying through rings to practice flying with
- 50:57Speaker 1: my smartphone. Although I have the controllers with my drone,
- 51:01Speaker 1: but it still was kind of cool to be able
- 51:02Speaker 1: to do and it was fun. It was like a
- 51:04Speaker 1: game I was playing flying the drone. So that's something
- 51:07Speaker 1: I want to look into. All right, we'll be back
- 51:09Speaker 1: with more of tech Talk Radio. We'll ask answer Rick's question.
- 51:12Speaker 1: I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean de Weird.

- 51:30Speaker 1: gonna answer Rick's question here, and I will tell you
- 51:33Speaker 1: Rix's question is about AI and AI generating photos and
- 51:37Speaker 1: stuff like that. Rick, We're gonna cover your question next
- 51:40Speaker 1: week on the show because there's something we need to
- 51:43Speaker 1: mention with Father's Day just around the corner. If you
- 51:47Speaker 1: were thinking about getting Dad a Steam gift card, here's
- 51:52Speaker 1: something think about. Sean and I were talking about this
- 51:55Speaker 1: earlier on the show. So if you're explain Sean what
- 51:58Speaker 1: Steam is for.
- 52:00Speaker 2: It's a gaming platform, right, It's a made by a
- 52:02Speaker 2: company called Valve, and it's you can buy games. It's
- 52:08Speaker 2: it's a gaming platform, right, you buy it buy games.
- 52:11Speaker 2: Developers can sell their games on Steam, but you can
- 52:15Speaker 2: get gift cards for them, and the Steam gift cards
- 52:18Speaker 2: specifically have been the target for in person scams ya,
- 52:26Speaker 2: meaning you get called by somebody with a very realistic
- 52:30Speaker 2: American accent and says, oh, my my sister is in
- 52:35Speaker 2: the hospital and I need money. But the only way
- 52:38Speaker 2: I can get it is if you if I send
- 52:40Speaker 2: you money and you buy me a gift card. And
- 52:44Speaker 2: so there's the whole scam about going, you know, go
- 52:46Speaker 2: buy gift cards for Apple or go buy gift cards
- 52:49Speaker 2: for Amazon or Steam, et cetera. And so Valve came
- 52:53Speaker 2: out and said, we've been so inundated with scams on
- 52:56Speaker 2: our physical gift cards. We're gonna be done. We're just
- 52:59Speaker 2: not gonna sell anymore. And I'm I'm sure it's gonna
- 53:02Speaker 2: be a huge cost saving. So it's weird, right, I
- 53:04Speaker 2: don't think gift cards cost any money, right, but to
- 53:06Speaker 2: produce them, to sell them, to ship them to logistics,
- 53:09Speaker 2: et cetera. Like, there's probably a whole department of people
- 53:11Speaker 2: that work on just curating physical gift cards. So it's
- 53:15Speaker 2: probably gonna save them a ton of money. But it
- 53:17Speaker 2: could also save you from being scammed by physical gift cards.
- 53:21Speaker 1: So during the holidays, I was in the store and
- 53:24Speaker 1: the woman in front of me was buying Steam gift cards,
- 53:28Speaker 1: and I remember asking her, saying, oh, for your kids,
- 53:31Speaker 1: She goes, No, my husband, he loves he loves playing games,
- 53:34Speaker 1: so this will this will make him happy. So again,
- 53:38Speaker 1: here's the thing. With Father's Day coming around, you could
- 53:40Speaker 1: still get them, all right, You could still buy them
- 53:44Speaker 1: the physical gift cards. If you go into a retailer,
- 53:46Speaker 1: make sure you know all the precautions are in fact,
- 53:49Speaker 1: whenever you buy a gift card of any any type.
- 53:52Speaker 1: But Valve is saying that if they're already, if they're
- 53:56Speaker 1: still in stores, they could still sell them, but that's it.
- 53:59Speaker 1: They're not producing any more. You could still redeem the
- 54:03Speaker 1: existing physical gift cards that you've bought, but by the
- 54:06Speaker 1: end of this year they will be gone. They're ceasing
- 54:10Speaker 1: production on them, so you won't be able to buy them,
- 54:12Speaker 1: which is kind of a shame. If you were hoping
- 54:14Speaker 1: to get some for Father's Day, you've got a birthday
- 54:17Speaker 1: coming up. What would you like for your birthday?
- 54:18Speaker 2: Oh man, that's a loaded question. Yeah. So this past
- 54:23Speaker 2: week the Nintendo Direct this past Monday that came out.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Oh my god, I'm definitely getting a switch To this summer.
- 54:34Speaker 2: So star Fox they did a Star Fox for the
- 54:38Speaker 2: Switch To. They announced the Operator of Time remake.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Oh boy, Yeah.
- 54:44Speaker 2: I told everybody when it got leaked. I was like,
- 54:46Speaker 2: if they announced an operative Time remake, there is nothing
- 54:50Speaker 2: on this planet, in this world, in this universe that
- 54:53Speaker 2: will stop me from buying a switch To.
- 54:55Speaker 1: So there you go. All right, Well, listen, have a
- 54:58Speaker 1: great birthday. I know you can be out next week. Uh,
- 55:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna do some camping, do some fun stuff.
- 55:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna be forty the next time we recorded
- 55:05Speaker 2: the show, so.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Big for so next time you join us, you'll be forty.
- 55:08Speaker 1: You beating that forty group.
- 55:10Speaker 2: I'm gonna be sliding down the hill. I'm gonna be
- 55:12Speaker 2: on the over the air side, me over the hill.
- 55:15Speaker 1: We'll have a great birthday, and thank you for tuning
- 55:17Speaker 1: to Tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean.
- 55:20Speaker 2: We're gonna have a great week.
