Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Confronting Your Fears With LIZI MCINTOSH From THE BEAUTIFUL MONUMENT
Transcript
- 0:24Speaker 1: Hi. My name is Lizzie. I am the vocalist of
- 0:27Speaker 1: the Beautiful Monument and we just recently released our latest single,
- 0:31Speaker 1: Dweadmere very nice.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Thanks for trying to stay Lizzie.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Thank you for having me well.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Part of the reason I asked to do that intro
- 0:39Speaker 3: was so you could pronounce the song name for me.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I can get it right, but after hearing it roll
- 0:43Speaker 2: off your tongue, I'm not even gonna try.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I've actually started making a compilation video of people trying
- 0:49Speaker 1: to pronounce it because I just think it's heat's funny
- 0:51Speaker 1: because everyone's so Australian and just it's really funny. It's cute.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Well, I'm not going on your video mates, so I'm
- 0:59Speaker 2: just going to call it the D Song.
- 1:02Speaker 3: So the Beautiful Monument recently released the D Song late
- 1:06Speaker 3: last month, so that's the only reception been for it.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Really good, which has been really nice. Like I didn't
- 1:12Speaker 1: really know how it would go, having like bits of
- 1:16Speaker 1: Spanish in a song, but it's been received really well.
- 1:20Speaker 1: So that's that's nice. Less anxiety inducing now that it's
- 1:25Speaker 1: out in the wild. Yeah, I don't have to sit
- 1:28Speaker 1: there and overthink it.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Ha ha. So why where the Spanish angle, like you
- 1:32Speaker 2: don't look Spanish.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I am Spanish. Yeah, like painfully Spanish. Both of my
- 1:37Speaker 1: parents moved here. I'm the only child that was actually
- 1:40Speaker 1: born in Australia, which sucks, but yeah, both my brothers
- 1:43Speaker 1: were born in Spain. My parents moved here. I don't know.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I think Australia was doing like a million years ago,
- 1:50Speaker 1: like trying to get people from overseas into the country
- 1:55Speaker 1: for like work and stuff. So my dad got paid
- 1:57Speaker 1: to come over to Australia to work. And yeah, he
- 2:02Speaker 1: always tells me. He said to mum, like, we're moving
- 2:04Speaker 1: to Australia and she was like, what's that. Yeah, very
- 2:10Speaker 1: Spanish that I.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Rolled off your tongue so well, So tell us a
- 2:16Speaker 3: bit more about the song from a musical point of
- 2:17Speaker 3: view and what you were going for with it.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I think we wanted to do kind of like a
- 2:21Speaker 1: throwback to like I guess, like two thousand and seven
- 2:26Speaker 1: kind of feel. It has very I don't know. It
- 2:30Speaker 1: was kind of inspired a little bit by like Pierce
- 2:32Speaker 1: the Veil and cool shit that we were super into
- 2:35Speaker 1: when we were younger. But the song itself, like meaning wise,
- 2:40Speaker 1: is definitely about my struggles within, like just being a
- 2:45Speaker 1: musician and the self doubt and the people who, like
- 2:49Speaker 1: you know, you think are on your team that end
- 2:52Speaker 1: up kind of letting you down or responding in a
- 2:58Speaker 1: way that you weren't expecting someone someone who's supposed to
- 3:00Speaker 1: be on your side to respond. But yeah, the whole
- 3:03Speaker 1: recording process or writing music is a super, super daunting
- 3:06Speaker 1: thing for me, and it has been for years, and
- 3:09Speaker 1: like I've been doing this shit for like twelve years now,
- 3:12Speaker 1: like this band in particular, I think Timmyum's almost thirteen
- 3:15Speaker 1: years old now. But yeah, it was just I guess
- 3:20Speaker 1: I wasn't used to constructive criticism until I came into
- 3:23Speaker 1: this band. And I understand that constructive criticism is as
- 3:27Speaker 1: super important now, but at the time, I wasn't used
- 3:32Speaker 1: to it because I was very used to everyone being like, oh,
- 3:35Speaker 1: everything you write is great, it's amazing. So when I
- 3:38Speaker 1: was told, you know, something I wrote fucking sucked, it
- 3:42Speaker 1: was definitely a bit of a punch to the ego
- 3:45Speaker 1: and it hurts. So yeah, now, I don't know, I
- 3:50Speaker 1: think that whole experience kind of traumatized me in a
- 3:52Speaker 1: way because yeah, every time I have to go to
- 3:55Speaker 1: record or write anything. I am so anxious about it.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Like even last year, I was like, do I even bother? Like?
- 4:02Speaker 1: Do I keep going with music? Am I even like
- 4:04Speaker 1: good enough to do this? I can't write well. I
- 4:07Speaker 1: feel like I can't write for shit, but I obviously
- 4:11Speaker 1: am quite capable, But in my head, I'm like, I
- 4:13Speaker 1: don't do anything right? Why do I even bother? Typical
- 4:19Speaker 1: self doubt doubt.
- 4:21Speaker 3: I'm only asking this question because I've had people ask
- 4:24Speaker 3: of me, and I'm not a songwriter, so I've got
- 4:26Speaker 3: no idea. But those problems you're going through, like saying
- 4:29Speaker 3: yourself doubt with your writing and things like that, like.
- 4:32Speaker 2: How do you how do you? How are you.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Able to write that into a song where you know
- 4:37Speaker 3: other people are gonna listen to it and judge you,
- 4:39Speaker 3: when that's actually what's wrong with in the first place,
- 4:41Speaker 3: Like it's like it doesn't sort of sound like the
- 4:43Speaker 3: type of thing you do, Like it's it's great that
- 4:45Speaker 3: you do, but it just doesn't sound on the surface
- 4:48Speaker 3: like it would happen.
- 4:49Speaker 1: It's super like contradicting. Hey, like it's weird. I guess
- 4:55Speaker 1: I don't know because I've been doing it for so long.
- 4:57Speaker 1: It's kind of like maybe like an expert kind of
- 5:00Speaker 1: thing of like this is my you know, this is
- 5:04Speaker 1: what I do, This is what I've wanted to do
- 5:06Speaker 1: for such a long time, and like before you know,
- 5:09Speaker 1: all of the negativity and shit like that was what
- 5:11Speaker 1: my heart was set on, was being a fucking musician.
- 5:14Speaker 1: So I felt like I owed it to myself and
- 5:17Speaker 1: you know, the people in my band to like keep
- 5:19Speaker 1: pushing myself to write as best as I could, even though,
- 5:25Speaker 1: like I know how I was feeling internally like it's
- 5:29Speaker 1: just a diary entry and if people want to read
- 5:32Speaker 1: it and judge it, or like listen to it and
- 5:34Speaker 1: judge it, I mean, not everyone's going to like everything
- 5:37Speaker 1: I do or everything we do rather, and that's okay,
- 5:41Speaker 1: like everyone's entitled to their own opinion. But yeah, that's
- 5:44Speaker 1: a that's a real weird one. I don't know, I've
- 5:46Speaker 1: never really thought about it.
- 5:47Speaker 3: I just I know why you're actually opening yourself up
- 5:50Speaker 3: for more criticism in a way, it's sort of hundred percent.
- 5:54Speaker 1: So I'm just digging my own damp of it. But
- 6:00Speaker 1: when we wrote this song, I was honestly like stumped
- 6:03Speaker 1: on what to write about because I had like just
- 6:06Speaker 1: all of my lyrics and shit had pretty much just
- 6:09Speaker 1: been about how I'm a piece of shit and like
- 6:11Speaker 1: I'm not really like good at fucking anything. So when
- 6:16Speaker 1: I wrote this one, I actually did a tarot reading
- 6:21Speaker 1: for myself to like see what I should write about,
- 6:26Speaker 1: like what I shouldn't be writing about. So when I
- 6:28Speaker 1: pulled the cards, it pretty much pushed me to be like, Okay, yep,
- 6:34Speaker 1: it's fine, just write about it. Like obviously something out
- 6:37Speaker 1: in the universe is telling me that I need this
- 6:39Speaker 1: to come out. So I did. I wrote about it,
- 6:42Speaker 1: and it is out in the world, and if people
- 6:44Speaker 1: want to judge it, I don't care. If that's fine,
- 6:46Speaker 1: that's on them.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Well I'm going to record that little snippet and cut
- 6:49Speaker 3: it out. And every time someone asked me, I'm just
- 6:50Speaker 3: going to say, listen to this. Yeah, well this one's
- 6:56Speaker 3: for me.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I can't hide behind anyone else on this question.
- 6:58Speaker 3: But one thing I've always wondered with musicians, like you
- 7:01Speaker 3: write songs about the most painful parts of your life,
- 7:05Speaker 3: you know, like when you're singing a five ten, fifteen
- 7:08Speaker 3: years later and you're over that period of your life,
- 7:10Speaker 3: does it have to take you back to your.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Every single time, every single time, especially with songs like
- 7:16Speaker 1: Staying for example, Like every time I sing that song
- 7:20Speaker 1: like on stage, like when I if you hear like
- 7:23Speaker 1: the slightest crack in my voice or anything like that
- 7:26Speaker 1: or the emotion, I can promise you one hundred percent
- 7:29Speaker 1: it is just me being one hundred percent genuine because
- 7:32Speaker 1: I just go straight back to that time in my
- 7:35Speaker 1: life life with my parents and you know, my family
- 7:39Speaker 1: at that point in time and you know, like really
- 7:42Speaker 1: shitty family circumstances where it was very much the typical
- 7:46Speaker 1: you know, like oh, you're my child, you need to
- 7:48Speaker 1: be a doctor or a lawyer or whatever, and this
- 7:50Speaker 1: that and the other DA correct or Pier sings or anything.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Look at me now, it's not a phase. But yeah,
- 7:59Speaker 1: same with like give Up and that was that is
- 8:02Speaker 1: very deeply about, you know, depression. So every time I
- 8:06Speaker 1: have to sing that song too kind of steers me
- 8:09Speaker 1: back to like not necessarily the negativity of it all,
- 8:15Speaker 1: but like it's kind of a reminder that it's just
- 8:17Speaker 1: a bad day, not a bad life. You can pull
- 8:18Speaker 1: through this this Like I'm not okay, but I'll be
- 8:21Speaker 1: just fine. Like it's it's a nice subtle reminder, but yeah,
- 8:25Speaker 1: they definitely take me back. It doesn't matter how long
- 8:29Speaker 1: you know down the track or how long I've been
- 8:31Speaker 1: singing it. Yeah, it's this one again. And then internally
- 8:36Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm really fucking that.
- 8:42Speaker 2: The big question with.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Had the rolled.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I know I've been practicing that in my head for
- 8:51Speaker 3: the last five minutes. Did you see a standalone single
- 8:56Speaker 3: or a part of a bigger album?
- 8:57Speaker 2: Refe Picture.
- 9:00Speaker 1: It is a standalone single, so full disclosure, we were
- 9:04Speaker 1: supposed to have a bigger body of work, but just
- 9:06Speaker 1: like timing and stuff had just gotten away with us,
- 9:10Speaker 1: like from us, So it will just be a standalone
- 9:15Speaker 1: just due to I guess how long ago we'd sort
- 9:19Speaker 1: of recorded it and stuff. We've actually started writing more
- 9:23Speaker 1: shit this year and we're going back into the studio
- 9:25Speaker 1: in a couple of weeks to continue a bigger body
- 9:28Speaker 1: of work, just something that's like more I guess up
- 9:32Speaker 1: with the times and like to date with like music now.
- 9:37Speaker 1: But we'll most definitely probably be reworking the songs that
- 9:41Speaker 1: we were supposed to have for this the release that
- 9:45Speaker 1: is just not going to happen. Yeah, we'll be looking
- 9:48Speaker 1: at reworking those songs and just spicing them up and
- 9:50Speaker 1: making them more relevant to the time now as opposed
- 9:54Speaker 1: to two years ago when we recorded it.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Yeah, but you actually released your debut album on the
- 10:02Speaker 3: Scene in twenty seventeen, so that's seven years like an
- 10:07Speaker 3: add up. But how how has like the band changed
- 10:10Speaker 3: or grown with the music from then to what you're
- 10:13Speaker 3: actually doing now.
- 10:16Speaker 1: I think Covid really stitched us up because that album
- 10:21Speaker 1: had sort of like just been sort of getting traction
- 10:25Speaker 1: and shit, and then like we've been slowly like releasing
- 10:29Speaker 1: stuff and getting things out, and we were you know,
- 10:31Speaker 1: getting on like festival lineups and stuff, and like then
- 10:34Speaker 1: all of a sudden, Covid hit and it felt like
- 10:37Speaker 1: just a giant lull. And because we all live in
- 10:38Speaker 1: different states, it's so much fucking harder, Like we didn't
- 10:42Speaker 1: see each other for two years. But because of like
- 10:47Speaker 1: how long it's been now, and I guess like the
- 10:50Speaker 1: cohesiveness between record one and two, we're very excited because
- 10:56Speaker 1: the stuff that we're writing now is like brand spank
- 10:58Speaker 1: and new, Like you know, we're working as the four
- 11:02Speaker 1: of us, and it's like a very different and very
- 11:06Speaker 1: cool experience, like bringing in everyone's different influences to create
- 11:10Speaker 1: this new TVM, which I'm very very excited for. But yeah,
- 11:15Speaker 1: it's nice, I guess, like I don't know. It's cool having, like,
- 11:20Speaker 1: you know, Adam, alex Amy and I in a studio
- 11:25Speaker 1: together for the first time as like this four piece
- 11:29Speaker 1: because it's just we gel really well and like, although
- 11:32Speaker 1: our influences are so different, the songs that we've created
- 11:37Speaker 1: so far for this next body of work have just
- 11:40Speaker 1: tied in and come together so nicely. So we're just
- 11:43Speaker 1: fucking over the moon.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Okay, that's awesome.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I only got three shows left on the Breaking Up
- 11:50Speaker 3: with tour with Red Hooks, so you playing Newcastle this Thursday,
- 11:53Speaker 3: September twelve, Sitney on Friday, and finishing Brisbane this Saturday.
- 11:57Speaker 2: So how's the tour been going from Curse?
- 12:00Speaker 1: It's been really fun. Yeah, it's been great. Like we
- 12:05Speaker 1: got to play Ginderbyne. Who the fuck goes to Ginderbyne?
- 12:07Speaker 1: And how random? Two hours out of Canberra we got
- 12:12Speaker 1: to see no snow. We saw like a little bit
- 12:15Speaker 1: of snow like on top of a mountain, but there
- 12:18Speaker 1: was one hundred kilometer winds. It was cold as shit.
- 12:23Speaker 1: That was the weekend that we hit a kangaroo, so well,
- 12:25Speaker 1: I deemed the kangaroo hit us because we locked eyes
- 12:30Speaker 1: and I could just I was like, brother, don't and
- 12:32Speaker 1: he did it anyway?
- 12:34Speaker 2: No, No, I did not.
- 12:37Speaker 1: No. Twelve years of doing this, I had mentally prepared
- 12:40Speaker 1: myself for this day because I knew it was going
- 12:42Speaker 1: to fucking happen one day. And I was very, very
- 12:44Speaker 1: grateful that I was the one behind the wheel because damn,
- 12:48Speaker 1: like I just I was ready for this shit. I
- 12:51Speaker 1: will never Yeah, like my vegan card probably revoked, but
- 12:56Speaker 1: I still maintain that he came at me and it
- 13:00Speaker 1: was either him or my band, and I love my
- 13:03Speaker 1: friends more than this kangaroo that picked a fight with us.
- 13:07Speaker 1: But the shows that weekend were really really good, really
- 13:10Speaker 1: really fine. Melbourne was insane, like very sick show to
- 13:16Speaker 1: play the other bands because we missed out on the
- 13:20Speaker 1: Perth leg. They got stitched up with flights, so some
- 13:25Speaker 1: of the bands, like we had to end up going
- 13:28Speaker 1: on early because heart Out's flight didn't land until like
- 13:33Speaker 1: they started playing, so we took their slot so that
- 13:36Speaker 1: they could actually play that night. It's just fucking chaos.
- 13:42Speaker 1: But Adelaide was really good. Adelaide was sick. I don't think.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Oh no, someone kicked out our our click track. That
- 13:51Speaker 1: was the only like downside of Adelaide. But Adelaide was great.
- 13:54Speaker 1: We hung out in the park, I got to play
- 13:56Speaker 1: my brat's game on Switch, so I was having a
- 13:58Speaker 1: great fucking time. The bartender made me a damn coffee.
- 14:02Speaker 1: It was just great. It was so fun, good times.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Let's see what happens this weekend.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Yes, well, you guys have toured with and played with
- 14:12Speaker 3: heaps bitter national bands like Evanescence, Escape A, Sleep with Sirens,
- 14:16Speaker 3: but toured with.
- 14:17Speaker 2: A fellow a stroll with a few fellow Australian bands.
- 14:20Speaker 3: It's got to be that little bit more satisfying on it.
- 14:23Speaker 1: It is really cool, Like it's so sick because we're
- 14:26Speaker 1: all like on the same page. We all laugh at
- 14:28Speaker 1: the same shit, which is really nice, and everyone's really
- 14:31Speaker 1: like sweet and like instant best friends, which I found
- 14:35Speaker 1: is like Evanescence aside, because those guys were a fucking enigma,
- 14:40Speaker 1: Like it was so insane that they actually wanted to
- 14:42Speaker 1: spend time with us, because that shit's like unheard of.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Like everyone that I've spoken to who's like played with
- 14:48Speaker 1: international bands they say, they're quite quiet and they take
- 14:50Speaker 1: a bit to like warm up to you. The Ena
- 14:52Speaker 1: fuck that Evanescence would just like, hey, what's up. This
- 14:55Speaker 1: is our security guard. Big Tea and Big T would
- 14:58Speaker 1: come in and be like, cool, the guys want to
- 14:59Speaker 1: hang out with you. Now, come on Lee your green room,
- 15:03Speaker 1: It's time to spend time with us. So we were like,
- 15:04Speaker 1: what is going on here? Like it was so fucking humbling.
- 15:07Speaker 1: It was amazing. But yeah, it's really nice touring with
- 15:11Speaker 1: Australian bands just because Yeah, like I said, it's like
- 15:13Speaker 1: instant best friends. Everyone's talking to each other and shit
- 15:16Speaker 1: straight away, and we all understand each other's humor, which
- 15:20Speaker 1: is dumb.
- 15:21Speaker 3: That's especially the Americans don't understand our humor at all.
- 15:27Speaker 2: I don't even understand our language after time half the time.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and they just smile and nod politely, and you're like,
- 15:34Speaker 1: you have no idea. I'm so sorry that.
- 15:36Speaker 2: We're like, we had fun.
- 15:41Speaker 3: That tour that Ron shows does finish his Saturday in
- 15:43Speaker 3: Brince with so what's next for the beautiful mone even
- 15:46Speaker 3: after that?
- 15:46Speaker 2: You got anything else planned?
- 15:48Speaker 1: Ah, we're just recording this year, like we're keeping it quiet.
- 15:52Speaker 1: We have an all ages show coming up in Melbourne.
- 15:56Speaker 1: I don't quite remember the date of it. I think
- 15:58Speaker 1: it's for a Freezer show, which is awesome. And then
- 16:01Speaker 1: we finally get to play to a younger crowd, which
- 16:04Speaker 1: is nice. But yeah, just recording working on, like just
- 16:08Speaker 1: focusing on getting this new music like finished so that
- 16:12Speaker 1: we can have a bigger body of workout for everyone
- 16:14Speaker 1: next year. So yeah, all exciting.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Before we let you go, start up at the little
- 16:20Speaker 3: thing where I dig into people's facebooks or bands facebooks
- 16:24Speaker 3: accounts before flash up on the screen and tell me
- 16:29Speaker 3: what's going on here? Okay, it's nothing too bad. There
- 16:32Speaker 3: wasn't actually that much to find on you guys, to
- 16:34Speaker 3: be honest, but I found this fun.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Is like a what's going on?
- 16:40Speaker 1: Before every show, we always stretch and we have like
- 16:45Speaker 1: a little group stretch session. I don't know if you
- 16:47Speaker 1: can see, I'm actually holding Amy's boob, she's my wife.
- 16:52Speaker 1: It's okay, but yeah, we always do group stretches. And
- 16:55Speaker 1: then Alex every time before a show she will like
- 16:59Speaker 1: they'll always give us a pep talk and.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Be like you're the best, You're the best, Like.
- 17:03Speaker 1: We're gonna fucking smash this and it's just great. Alex
- 17:06Speaker 1: is the best fucking hype man ever. Like it's so good.
- 17:10Speaker 1: But yeah, that's just stretching, stretching before a show, you know.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Bang, you can keep the leg up the longest.
- 17:17Speaker 1: No, but I might might start get some free money
- 17:24Speaker 1: that we don't.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Well, that sort of leads into the next one because
- 17:28Speaker 3: it explains why he's our stretching.
- 17:31Speaker 2: How the hell face and kick your leg that high
- 17:36Speaker 2: at the same.
- 17:38Speaker 1: I don't know. I am perpetually just so impressed by
- 17:41Speaker 1: Amy's high kicks.
- 17:44Speaker 3: There's so many photos with someone in your band kicking
- 17:47Speaker 3: it's yeah, we got the.
- 17:48Speaker 1: High kicks happening. Well, we have Look, we have fun
- 17:51Speaker 1: with it. It's fun.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Looks like he could do some damage pretty quick.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Correct. Correct, I don't think I can kick my leg
- 18:00Speaker 1: that high though, like I do kikiS, but like not
- 18:02Speaker 1: that high of a Kiki.
- 18:04Speaker 2: I could kick the shit out of assumes.
- 18:05Speaker 1: But I ain't going any mind that correct anything higher
- 18:09Speaker 1: as sports as far as I'm concerned, and I am not.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I am not that guy. I'm not a sports guy.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Hell No, listen, what takes very much for your time today?
