Speaker 4: Happy Thursday, one step closer to your weekend. We're still
• 1:41
Speaker 4: talking about the special session which wrapped up on Tuesday night.
• 1:45
Speaker 4: Late Tuesday night, a Million Niceley from West Virginia Watch
• 1:48
Speaker 4: was covering it closely and still writing about it, and
• 1:50
Speaker 4: we're going to talk to her in studio a little
• 1:52
Speaker 4: bit later on about some of the issues related to
• 1:55
Speaker 4: childcare that we're addressed and some that were not. Sh'll
• 1:58
Speaker 4: join us a little bit later on in the show.
• 2:00
Speaker 4: Last night was night two of a series of hearings
• 2:02
Speaker 4: having to do with school closures, consolidations, etc. I regret
• 2:06
Speaker 4: I didn't get a chance to talk to to address
• 2:09
Speaker 4: it at all yesterday. I hope to get to but sometimes,
• 2:11
Speaker 4: you know, the show just kind of gets away from you.
• 2:13
Speaker 4: Night one was Tuesday night at Riverside High concerning East
• 2:17
Speaker 4: Bank Middle and the board, of course, after listening to
• 2:20
Speaker 4: comments from the public, voted three to two to move
• 2:22
Speaker 4: toward a closure. Last night at Saint Albans, the topic
• 2:25
Speaker 4: was McKinley Middle School and the board voted five to
• 2:28
Speaker 4: nothing to close McKinley Middle. I'll get into that a
• 2:32
Speaker 4: little bit later on Plus Alexander Gossrudt, he's a young
• 2:35
Speaker 4: management on the show in the past. He's a young
• 2:38
Speaker 4: up and comer in the Republican Party, and he has
• 2:40
Speaker 4: his sights set firmly on taking out another Republican not
• 2:44
Speaker 4: this year because she's not up this year, but in
• 2:46
Speaker 4: twenty twenty six, and that is Senator Shelley Moore Capito.
• 2:49
Speaker 4: So we're gonna talk to him about that all that.
• 2:51

• 2:59

• 3:01
Speaker 4: football a day early because tonight the Herbert Uver Huskies
• 3:05
Speaker 4: will take on the Wayne Pioneer. Should be a good one.
• 3:07
Speaker 4: Tom Bragg and Matt Murphy have all the action tonight
• 3:09
Speaker 4: on her sister station ninety six to one KWS. Tom
• 3:12
Speaker 4: joins us in studio this morning. Tom, Good morning, welcome
• 3:15
  Speaker 4: to the show.
• 3:15
Speaker 5: Not usually here in person in the morning day. Good
• 3:18
Speaker 5: to see your face for once.
• 3:19
Speaker 6: How are you doing.
• 3:20
Speaker 4: It's not necessarily a good face to see.
• 3:23
Speaker 2: I'll take it, Okay, I'll take it.
• 3:25
  Speaker 7: It's new. I'll take it. It's new.
• 3:27
Speaker 4: It's new. It's a new old face. So normally we
• 3:31
Speaker 4: have games on KWS on Friday night, but we found
• 3:34
Speaker 4: out that this game is going to be tonight instead.
• 3:37
Speaker 4: How do you feel about Thursday night games? Well, I
• 3:39
Speaker 4: mean you get Friday off now.
• 3:41
Speaker 5: Yeah, it usually depends if I got a game on
• 3:43
Speaker 5: Friday too or not. This time, fortunately for us at
• 3:47
Speaker 5: home that we do have this Thursday game. It's my
• 3:49
Speaker 5: girlfriend's twin kids eleventh birthday on Friday, so we get
• 3:53
Speaker 5: a little little respite from that. We'll have a little
• 3:55
Speaker 5: kids party instead of a high school football party. But yeah,
• 3:58
  Speaker 5: Thursday night games, I think they're fun. I think it's
• 4:00
Speaker 5: it becomes odd. You see the kids maybe behave a
• 4:02
Speaker 5: little bit different. They don't have that next day off.
• 4:05
Speaker 5: You maybe in the back of your mind, I've still
• 4:06
Speaker 5: got to get up and go to school the next morning.
• 4:08
Speaker 5: So but but yeah, man, the high school football under
• 4:12
Speaker 5: the lights didn't matter if it's Friday night, Thursday night,
• 4:14
Speaker 5: Monday night, Tuesday night.
• 4:15
Speaker 7: I love it. Man, It's a good time.
• 4:16
Speaker 4: And talk about this matchup between Wayne and Herbert Hoover.
• 4:19
Speaker 5: I think it's going to be a pretty good game.
• 4:20
Speaker 5: Hoover's kind of had things rolling so far. Huskies are
• 4:23
Speaker 5: five and over right at about the midpoint of the season.
• 4:26
Speaker 5: They've kind of vanquished some foes that have tripped them
• 4:29
Speaker 5: up in the past. They avenge their state title game
• 4:31
Speaker 5: loss from a couple of years ago, and the opener
• 4:33
Speaker 5: they beat Independence Winfield has been a team that they've
• 4:35
Speaker 5: had a real hard time getting through in the regular season.
• 4:38
Speaker 5: They beat them. They won an overtime on the road
• 4:39
Speaker 5: at Nitro they won on the road at Chapmanville last week.
• 4:43
Speaker 5: Wayne's it's not the Wayne that maybe you and I
• 4:45
Speaker 5: grew up with, but they're a lot closer to that
• 4:48
Speaker 5: than what they have been the last few years. Talking
• 4:51
Speaker 5: with Joey Fields, the head coach at Herbert Hoover last night,
• 4:53
Speaker 5: he said, you know, last year we went down to Wayne,
• 4:55
Speaker 5: they were two and three, not playing real good ball,
• 4:57
Speaker 5: played US real tough, and then didn't lose again until
• 4:59
Speaker 5: the play went on this crazy run and played a
• 5:02
Speaker 5: very very good Fairmont Senior team, very tough up at
• 5:04
Speaker 5: East West Stadium in the playoffs. And they've kind of
• 5:06
Speaker 5: kept that role in this year. Four and one on
• 5:08
Speaker 5: the season, the loan losses to that very good Nitro team.
• 5:11
Speaker 5: So it'll be interesting to see what the Pioneers do
• 5:13
Speaker 5: tonight out at Oak You and it's classic Wayne wing tea.
• 5:17
Speaker 5: They've got four or five kids that they like to
• 5:18
Speaker 5: get the ball to. It'll be fun to watch.
• 5:20
Speaker 4: And I think you said it best. I did a
• 5:21
Speaker 4: little research prior to the interview today, Tom, is that
• 5:24
Speaker 4: this is not the Wayne Pioneer team that we've seen
• 5:26
Speaker 4: in the past one. It's always been that juggernaut by
• 5:28
Speaker 4: that having been said, there are no pushovers either. No,
• 5:32
Speaker 4: there are no pushovers.
• 5:33
Speaker 5: And Wayne is one of those programs that really takes
• 5:38
Speaker 5: that word to heart program. You know, Tommy Harmon's been
• 5:41
Speaker 5: the coach there for a long time. Sam found so
• 5:42
Speaker 5: much success, so many great players, so many great teams
• 5:45
Speaker 5: over the years, that doesn't just go away. A lot
• 5:48
Speaker 5: of these guys on the team now maybe they had
• 5:49
Speaker 5: an older brother, a dad and uncle, somebody who's been
• 5:52
Speaker 5: around this program when they've been at those heights, and
• 5:55
Speaker 5: that trickles down and I think you're starting to see
• 5:57
Speaker 5: some of that pride, some of that fight come back
• 5:59
Speaker 5: down for the Pioneer. So I think if you, if
• 6:02
Speaker 5: you were an odds maker, you'd probably have the Huskies
• 6:04
Speaker 5: as the favorite tonight.
• 6:05
Speaker 7: But I think it's gonna be a fun game. It
• 6:06
Speaker 7: should be a good one.
• 6:07
Speaker 4: Talking to Tom Bragg about tonight's Herbert Hoover game, he
• 6:09
Speaker 4: of course, and Matt Murphy over on her sister station
• 6:12
Speaker 4: ninety six one KWS will have complete coverage to Dave
• 6:14
Speaker 4: Island showing five Vinty Life brought to you in part
• 6:16
Speaker 4: by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. The
• 6:19
Speaker 4: Birds and our sister station, The Beat, invite you to
• 6:21
Speaker 4: go more Ballpark on Thursday, the twenty fourth of this
• 6:23
Speaker 4: month for Trick or Beat, presented by Soelango Law. Two sessions,
• 6:27
Speaker 4: one at six o'clock, the other starting at seven thirty.
• 6:29
Speaker 4: You must must must have a ticket to be admitted,
• 6:32
Speaker 4: and tickets are free. They're available at our studios eleven
• 6:34
Speaker 4: eleven Virginia Street East and Charleston during normal business hours.
• 6:38
Speaker 4: And we'll be talking a whole lot more about Tricker
• 6:39
Speaker 4: Beat as it gets a little bit closer. So you
• 6:42
Speaker 4: mentioned Tom that the Huskies are five and zer now
• 6:44
Speaker 4: midway point of the season pretty much. I think if
• 6:47
Speaker 4: you talked to Joey Fields, he's not going to say, well,
• 6:48
Speaker 4: this is where we thought we would be. But I
• 6:50
Speaker 4: think that a lot of folks, because coaches never want
• 6:53
Speaker 4: to say that, but on the outside looking in, could
• 6:55
Speaker 4: probably agree with that. Yeah.
• 6:56
Speaker 5: I think if you looked at the schedule when it
• 6:58
Speaker 5: came out and look at what Hoover's had coming back
• 7:02
Speaker 5: roster wise, you know, having having a senior quarterback like
• 7:05
Speaker 5: Dane Hatfield, who's a four year starter at this point,
• 7:08
Speaker 5: a guy who's played more high school football than almost
• 7:10
Speaker 5: anybody ever ever will that that really is a nice
• 7:14
Speaker 5: ace to have up your sleeve. And I think you're
• 7:15
Speaker 5: seeing Hoover flex that a little bit. You're starting to
• 7:17
Speaker 5: see more guys get involved. Talking with coach fields, you know,
• 7:21
Speaker 5: Dane Hatfield and Blake Fisher get a lot of the
• 7:24
Speaker 5: the hype around this offense as they score a lot
• 7:27
Speaker 5: of points. But guys like Devin Silvis, kid that came
• 7:29
Speaker 5: in from sat Albans last year. Guy like Talon Harrison
• 7:31
Speaker 5: played that started his career at Systemville a few years
• 7:34
Speaker 5: ago and has really come on to be a playmaker,
• 7:36
Speaker 5: a difference maker in special teams and on the outsideer receiver.
• 7:39
Speaker 5: You're starting to see more guys get involved in and
• 7:42
Speaker 5: things are starting to roll. And like you said, you
• 7:43
Speaker 5: look at that schedule five and zero, probably not that
• 7:46
Speaker 5: big of a stretch if someone told you they were
• 7:48
Speaker 5: going to be undefeated at this point in the season.
• 7:49
Speaker 5: It's going to be interesting down down this back half
• 7:53
Speaker 5: of the schedule. Of course, you got Wayne Tonight. Ripley
• 7:55
Speaker 5: is looming out there. This has been one of the
• 7:57
Speaker 5: best Ripley teams in many years. Same thing could be
• 8:00
Speaker 5: said for Elkins. Elkins is coming to Elk you in
• 8:03
Speaker 5: a few weeks and then to end the season an
• 8:05
Speaker 5: odd odd quirk of the schedule, Herbert Hoover's taking two
• 8:08
Speaker 5: really long road trips the last two weeks of the season.
• 8:11
Speaker 5: They're going to play at Hedgesville one week and then
• 8:13
Speaker 5: at weir So go into the Eastern Panhandle in the
• 8:15
Speaker 5: Northern Painhandle the two weeks prior to the playoffs starting.
• 8:19
Speaker 5: I think the idea is to test these guys before
• 8:21
Speaker 5: they get before they get into the playoffs. They've passed
• 8:23
Speaker 5: all the tests so far, but they're not over. There's
• 8:26
Speaker 5: still plenty plenty to come for this Hoover team. They've
• 8:28
Speaker 5: got some tasks ahead of them down the stretch.
• 8:30
Speaker 4: In high school football, you know, Tom, you've covered it
• 8:33
Speaker 4: for a long time, is huge in West Virginia. But
• 8:34
Speaker 4: I don't know if you had to get down with
• 8:37
Speaker 4: a piece of paper and write down the four or
• 8:38
Speaker 4: five most rabid fan bases and how the community all
• 8:41
Speaker 4: rallies around the school and it was that way. I mean,
• 8:44
Speaker 4: everybody talks about the flood from a couple of years
• 8:46
Speaker 4: ago or twenty sixteen, I guess, but it was that
• 8:49
Speaker 4: way before. I can remember years ago, years and year
• 8:52
Speaker 4: back when you were a kid. I could remember going
• 8:54
Speaker 4: to calling a Herbert Hoover game. It was a Man
• 8:57
Speaker 4: High School Logan County Man played at Herbert Hoover. I mean,
• 9:00
Speaker 4: I'm talking twenty twenty five years ago.
• 9:02
Speaker 5: And probably they were both probably Triple A teams in
• 9:04
Speaker 5: the MSAZ back and I did that game, and I.
• 9:07
Speaker 4: Remember them thinking, I don't think I had ever gone
• 9:09
Speaker 4: to a game that had as much community support. And
• 9:12
Speaker 4: how everybody just rallied around. That's kind of the trademark,
• 9:16
Speaker 4: if you will, of the Herbert Hoover.
• 9:18
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think you said it, just the way that
• 9:21
Speaker 5: that community rallies around, not just the football team, but
• 9:26
Speaker 5: the whole school, whether it's athletics or academics or the
• 9:29
Speaker 5: band or whatever they've got going on. Those folks up
• 9:31
Speaker 5: at Elk River that love their Huskies, and it's really
• 9:34
Speaker 5: cool to see you talk about some of the programs
• 9:37
Speaker 5: around the state like that. It's another Huskies program that comes.
• 9:40
Speaker 7: To mind for me.
• 9:40
Speaker 5: I worked at the paper up in Fairmont for a
• 9:42
Speaker 5: while and the North Marion Huskies. It's a real similar community,
• 9:45
Speaker 5: just a real similar vibe. Some of the other big
• 9:48
Speaker 5: ones come off. I mean, you think about the Parkersburg's,
• 9:50
Speaker 5: the Morgantowns, the Wheeling Parks, the Beckley Woodrow Wilson. There's
• 9:54
Speaker 5: some really great fan bases around the state. Those are
• 9:56
Speaker 5: just big sicles getting in some of these small ones.
• 9:58
Speaker 5: Doddridge County I always thought had fantastic support for that
• 10:01
Speaker 5: football team Independence we talked about earlier with Herbert Hoover.
• 10:04
Speaker 5: I could go on all day about this day. There's
• 10:05
Speaker 5: a so many good fan bases around the state. I've
• 10:08
Speaker 5: been very, very lucky to get to do what I've
• 10:10
Speaker 5: done for as long as I have and had that
• 10:12
Speaker 5: flexibility to not just be pigeonholed in and say, oh,
• 10:16
Speaker 5: you're going to every Saint Albans game this year.
• 10:18
  Speaker 4: Oh you're going.
• 10:19
Speaker 5: I've been able to see games all over the state
• 10:20
Speaker 5: and it's just been so much fun for me. I'm
• 10:22
  Speaker 5: really lucky.
• 10:23
Speaker 4: And you and Matt Murphy will have action beginning what
• 10:25
  Speaker 4: time tonight.
• 10:26
Speaker 5: We usually go on about five minutes before kickoff, so
• 10:28
Speaker 5: fingers crossed about six fifty five to night on ninety
• 10:30
Speaker 5: six to one KWS and.
• 10:31
Speaker 4: Our sister station, As I said, you said, ninety six
• 10:33
Speaker 4: one KWS your home for Herbert Hoover football. All season long,
• 10:36
Speaker 4: ye Matt calling and all the games, and of course
• 10:38
Speaker 4: you can also catch it on the web and on
• 10:40
Speaker 4: the apps and everything. And then tomorrow night we'll have
• 10:42
Speaker 4: Chris Lawrence in here because Chris and Aaron Parker are
• 10:44
Speaker 4: going to have coverage of Hurricane and Capital tomorrow night
• 10:47
Speaker 4: on the WCHS network. That should be a good one
• 10:49
  Speaker 4: as well.
• 10:50
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think so. Capital's kind of on the bounce
• 10:52
Speaker 5: back right now. They've got some really intriguing young, kind
• 10:55
Speaker 5: of inexperienced players Hurricans. The other end of that, they've
• 10:58
Speaker 5: got some veteran guys who are played been playing top
• 11:01
Speaker 5: level ball for a long time. Should be a fun one,
• 11:03
Speaker 5: but gonna be a tough night for Capital. I think
• 11:05
Speaker 5: they've they've got a lot on their plate.
• 11:06
Speaker 4: All right, we'll talk to Chris about that tomorrow. Tom
• 11:08

• 15:13
Speaker 4: Norwegian. It's Norwegian for a guy with shiny shoes. Because
• 15:16
Speaker 4: I told Alex when he came in the city, I said,
• 15:18
Speaker 4: if nothing else, I'm going to give you the award
• 15:21
Speaker 4: for having the shiniest shoes I have ever seen. In mind,
• 15:23
Speaker 4: you're like a state trooper, man, I mean.
• 15:25
Speaker 8: What's up with that?
• 15:25
Speaker 7: Looks like the state trooper shoes. I have to give
• 15:27
Speaker 7: you that. Yeah, the patent leather, you can't beat them.
• 15:29
Speaker 4: Give me some of your your background, yeah, definitely.
• 15:33
Speaker 7: First, I just want to say, Dave, my family's thoughts
• 15:36
Speaker 7: and prayers are with Floridians currently, some that have lost
• 15:40
Speaker 7: their lives, some that have lost their property, but I'm
• 15:42
Speaker 7: sure their spirit will not be deterred. And I just
• 15:45
Speaker 7: want to say that it's been remarkable to see how
• 15:47
Speaker 7: West Virginia stepped up for North Carolinians and their UH
• 15:51
Speaker 7: storm issues as well, and we hope those communities are
• 15:53
Speaker 7: able to be made home heel again. I'm a thirty
• 15:57
Speaker 7: two year old conservative Republican. I'm running to bring generational
• 16:02
Speaker 7: change to West Virginia and to give our people hope
• 16:04
Speaker 7: into the twenty first century. I don't believe that currently
• 16:08
Speaker 7: we are being represented in a way that is going
• 16:11
Speaker 7: to promote the state to be successful in the future.
• 16:15
Speaker 7: And right now we have to find young leaders and
• 16:18
Speaker 7: new leaders to bring West Virginia full circle and get
• 16:21
Speaker 7: the state to where it belongs, which is in the
• 16:23
Speaker 7: top third of states in the country.
• 16:24
Speaker 4: And you've already set your sights on your next venture,
• 16:28
Speaker 4: so to speak, twenty twenty six against Senator Shelley Moore Capital.
• 16:32
Speaker 7: Yes, so we are going to take on Senator Shelley
• 16:34
Speaker 7: Moore Capitol, who's been in federal office for twenty four
• 16:37
Speaker 7: years and she is served the state of West Virginia.
• 16:40
Speaker 7: I thank her for her service, but I believe West
• 16:43
Speaker 7: Virginians deserve a fighter, and deserve a conservative, and deserve
• 16:47
Speaker 7: somebody that can go fight for West Virginians in a
• 16:49
Speaker 7: way that we have not seen Senator Capitol do over
• 16:52
Speaker 7: her time in Congress.
• 16:53
Speaker 4: What do you think that where do you have issue
• 16:55
Speaker 4: with her and what she's not done?
• 16:57
Speaker 7: In your opinion, well, the first thing, she's not the
• 16:59
  Speaker 7: conservative that I am, so I don't believe that she's
• 17:02
  Speaker 7: a conservative. I think, if anything, she's a liberal Republican,
• 17:04
Speaker 7: maybe not even a real conservative at all. I see
• 17:08
Speaker 7: her speeches on the Senate floor, I see her Senate
• 17:12
Speaker 7: leadership press conferences, and she doesn't seem to be somebody
• 17:15
Speaker 7: that is delivering passionate statements. She doesn't seem to really
• 17:20
Speaker 7: have the fire and the energy that we need out
• 17:22
Speaker 7: of our leaders. She's very bland. She I believe, is
• 17:25
Speaker 7: a stale politician at this point, and I think with
• 17:28
Speaker 7: the age she's at now, you know it's time to
• 17:31
Speaker 7: retire and let some new West Virginians serve this state.
• 17:34
Speaker 4: Do you think we should have term limits?
• 17:36
  Speaker 11: I do.
• 17:36
  Speaker 4: I do.
• 17:37
  Speaker 7: I'm a constitutionalist. I follow what's in the constitution, So
• 17:40
Speaker 7: anything that's not in the Constitution I am highly suspect of.
• 17:44
Speaker 7: But I think that we have seen the same politicians
• 17:47
Speaker 7: stay shackled to the same seats in this nation for decades.
• 17:52
Speaker 7: And yes, we will lose some good people, will lose
• 17:55
Speaker 7: some institutional staples at times, but I think to get
• 17:59
Speaker 7: rid of the bad actors, people like Nancy Pelosi, which
• 18:01
Speaker 7: have sat in Congress for forty years. I'll give you
• 18:04
Speaker 7: a quick stat and show you how corrupt our country
• 18:07
Speaker 7: has become. Nancy Pelosi, on her current salary as a
• 18:10
Speaker 7: US House of Representative would have had to serve in
• 18:13
Speaker 7: the US Congress for three thousand years to have a
• 18:15
Speaker 7: mass the amount of wealth that she is amassed as
• 18:17
Speaker 7: a lawmaker. I think our system has big problems and
• 18:21
Speaker 7: bringing pure conservatives to the fold is necessary to bring
• 18:25
Speaker 7: America together and lead us into the twenty first century.
• 18:27
Speaker 4: What is your definition, Alex of a true conservative? Because
• 18:30
Speaker 4: we get this battle a lot that people say. And
• 18:33
Speaker 4: I heard you, with all due respect, I heard you've
• 18:35
Speaker 4: talked about other people and you said, well, we hear
• 18:37
Speaker 4: the term rhino thrown out there a lot, and to
• 18:40
Speaker 4: be fair on the other side, to hear the term
• 18:41
Speaker 4: dianoh thrown out there a lot as well.
• 18:43
  Speaker 12: Well.
• 18:43
Speaker 4: What is a true conservative to Alex gas rhad gas RD.
• 18:46
  Speaker 13: So, a true.
• 18:47
Speaker 7: Conservative is somebody that follows the Constitution, that doesn't believe
• 18:50
Speaker 7: it's a living, breathing document. Somebody that stands up for
• 18:53
Speaker 7: physical responsibility. If you look at a thirty six trillion
• 18:56
Speaker 7: dollars debt that we have now reckless spending packages. One
• 18:58
Speaker 7: of the reasons we have to replace under Capitol is
• 19:01
Speaker 7: she continues to facilitate these continuing resolutions and omnibus packages.
• 19:05
Speaker 7: She won't commit to getting back to a regular order
• 19:07
Speaker 7: in the United States Senate, which continues to balloon our debt.
• 19:10
Speaker 7: So physical conservatism is huge. We need to get back
• 19:13
Speaker 7: to continuing resolutions and single item spending bills. Sovereignty, the
• 19:17
Speaker 7: sovereignty of this nation is critical. If you don't have borders,
• 19:20
Speaker 7: if you don't have sovereignty, you don't have a country.
• 19:22
Speaker 7: You don't have a constitution anymore. So border security is very,
• 19:26
Speaker 7: very important in the new conservative mindset of the twenty
• 19:29
Speaker 7: first century. You must have secure borders. We must deincentivize
• 19:32
Speaker 7: people to come here and get rid of the asylum
• 19:36
Speaker 7: system altogether in US law. But people ultimately that believe
• 19:41
Speaker 7: government should be right sized is conservatism. You know, I
• 19:43
Speaker 7: don't believe that the current federal agencies at their certain
• 19:47
Speaker 7: size and scope now should allow to continue. We need
• 19:50
Speaker 7: to reduce bureaucracy, EPA, Department of Education, IRS, all of
• 19:55
Speaker 7: these three letter agents.
• 19:56
Speaker 4: Are you saying reducing or we're talking about eliminating.
• 19:59
Speaker 7: I'd like to limit. It's the Department of Education. But
• 20:01
Speaker 7: reducing these government agencies is necessary. Every single agency needs
• 20:05
Speaker 7: less people working in We need less people working in
• 20:07
Speaker 7: government today, and we need to get this country back
• 20:10
Speaker 7: on track. It is so far off the rails. We're
• 20:12
Speaker 7: head of the way of the Roman Empire economically.
• 20:14
Speaker 4: But Dave Allen Chillin five Adeline brought to you by
• 20:16
Speaker 4: Morgan and Morgan with more than twenty billion dollars recovered.
• 20:19
Speaker 4: They believe that when you're injured, you deserve more. Morgan
• 20:21
Speaker 4: Morgan is America's largest entry law firm. Is politics something
• 20:25
Speaker 4: that you've always been interested in? Were you like the
• 20:27
Speaker 4: Alex found I don't know if you know who Alex P.
• 20:29
Speaker 4: Keaton is, but on the were you that kind of kid?
• 20:31
Speaker 4: Did you have the shiny shoes and the suit and
• 20:33
Speaker 4: everything in five or six?
• 20:34
  Speaker 14: Yeah?
• 20:35
Speaker 7: I mean so for me, I've always been a student
• 20:37
Speaker 7: of politics. I think, as I said on this program
• 20:39
Speaker 7: when I when I first came on my debut here
• 20:42
Speaker 7: with the Voice of Charleston, you know, I said, I've
• 20:45
Speaker 7: been following politics since I was a small child. The
• 20:47
Speaker 7: two thousand election kind of kicked me off. So's it's
• 20:49
  Speaker 7: a subject that I've studied since I was a kid.
• 20:52
  Speaker 7: It's a subject that I got a degree in, It's
• 20:54
Speaker 7: a discipline I got a degree in in college, and
• 20:56
  Speaker 7: it's something that I since I was a little kid,
• 20:59
Speaker 7: have always known that I would come up at some
• 21:01
Speaker 7: point and lead West Virginia into a better future, into
• 21:04
Speaker 7: a future that we can be proud of a state
• 21:06
Speaker 7: that we know, the state that we can be in,
• 21:09
Speaker 7: a state that can thrive. Ultimately, what do.
• 21:12
Speaker 4: I hear this a lot? And you kind of made
• 21:14
Speaker 4: reference to it about some older politicians people have been
• 21:17
Speaker 4: in service, and again it happens on both sides of
• 21:19
Speaker 4: the isle. Obviously, Well, what do we do need to
• 21:21
Speaker 4: do to get more young people in general, I'm not
• 21:23
Speaker 4: even talking about Republicans, I'm not just in general, to
• 21:25
Speaker 4: get more young people energized to want to be a
• 21:28
Speaker 4: part of a change or part of a system.
• 21:31
Speaker 7: So I think engaging people at a young age is
• 21:34
Speaker 7: very important. You know, I started a young Republican club
• 21:35
Speaker 7: at Elkins High School in the two thousand and eight
• 21:38
Speaker 7: election cycle, and a tremendous amount of those people, while
• 21:41
Speaker 7: not all of them went into politics, that they've gone
• 21:43
Speaker 7: on to successful careers and other disciplines, and we have
• 21:47
Speaker 7: to engage the youth today. We have to stand up.
• 21:49
Speaker 7: As you know, we've continued to hemorrhage our young people.
• 21:52
Speaker 7: We've continued to hemorrhage our population in this state. Two
• 21:55
Speaker 7: generations of West Virginians are gone. We lead the nation
• 21:58
Speaker 7: and drug overdose deaths per cap We have some terrible
• 22:02
Speaker 7: economic and public health outcomes that happen here every year,
• 22:06
Speaker 7: and we need to get to a point to where
• 22:08
Speaker 7: we can bring hope to our people and inspire them
• 22:11
Speaker 7: to stay here, to live here, to work here, to
• 22:13
Speaker 7: play here, to start a business. I'd like to be able.
• 22:16
Speaker 7: And one of the reasons I want to replace Senator
• 22:17
Speaker 7: Capito is just look at the record. At this point,
• 22:20
Speaker 7: twenty four years in federal office, West Virginia leads the
• 22:23
Speaker 7: nation in drug overdose deaths per capita. We have a
• 22:25
Speaker 7: failing economy, We lead the nation in childhood obesity. We
• 22:29
Speaker 7: have the lowest workforce participation rate in the nation. And
• 22:33
Speaker 7: we have to get change and we can't continue with
• 22:36
  Speaker 7: the same people.
• 22:38
Speaker 4: But how does a US senator make this change?
• 22:41
Speaker 7: Is Alex Well, it's about inspiring. So it's not you
• 22:44
Speaker 7: know a lot of people say, well, you're talking about
• 22:45
Speaker 7: state very important whether you're in a federal office, as
• 22:48
Speaker 7: a leader of the state, as a US senator, it's
• 22:50
Speaker 7: very important that I keep an eye on my home
• 22:52
Speaker 7: state and how it's doing in particular, and we can
• 22:55
Speaker 7: address some of these problems at the federal level. When
• 22:57
Speaker 7: it comes to the opioid crisis, the drug abuse, the
• 23:00
Speaker 7: economic problems. We have young people continuing to flee. So
• 23:04
Speaker 7: there are some things that we can do at the
• 23:05
Speaker 7: federal level to address it, but ultimately, we need to
• 23:07
Speaker 7: change the image of the state and we need to
• 23:09
Speaker 7: get new people in positions.
• 23:11
Speaker 4: Talking again to Alex gasrud who is going to be
• 23:14
Speaker 4: a candidate for US sitting in twenty twenty six, why
• 23:19
Speaker 4: the early start, I mean, why so early because we're
• 23:20
Speaker 4: not even through I know you're also very involved in
• 23:23
Speaker 4: some campaigns now or keep an eye on, but why
• 23:26
Speaker 4: do you feel so early to get started now? It's
• 23:28
Speaker 4: so important to get started now.
• 23:29
Speaker 7: Well, you know, we got seventy five hundred votes in
• 23:31
Speaker 7: the second congressional district in twenty four We were the
• 23:34
Speaker 7: second choice for a lot of people in that race
• 23:36
Speaker 7: if they weren't voting for their preferred candidate, and we
• 23:40
Speaker 7: felt that it was important with this election coming up,
• 23:43
Speaker 7: to take our message to all fifty five counties into
• 23:45
Speaker 7: the southern part of the state and to get out early.
• 23:47
Speaker 7: I'm not independently wealthy. My wife didn't put me in business.
• 23:51
Speaker 7: I don't have a bunch of money sitting around, so
• 23:53
  Speaker 7: I can't run a race in a traditional way. I
• 23:56
Speaker 7: have to start early. I have to start fundraising early.
• 23:59
Speaker 7: I have to get the ground roots in the organization.
• 24:01
Speaker 7: The volunteers all set up here very very early. And
• 24:04
Speaker 7: Senator Capito, as we know, is a very powerful person.
• 24:07
Speaker 7: She's fourth soon to be fourth and Senate leadership. She
• 24:10
Speaker 7: will have no problem raising more funds if necessary, and
• 24:14
Speaker 7: she'll be a very formidable opponent. But she is in
• 24:17
Speaker 7: a lot of trouble right now. We're going to be
• 24:18
Speaker 7: in a closed primary in twenty six.
• 24:20
Speaker 4: You think that'll stay. I mean, I know what the
• 24:23
Speaker 4: rules are now, but I've also heard some rumblings that
• 24:25
Speaker 4: it may not be a closed primary.
• 24:26
Speaker 7: In twenty two. Well, I'm sure she's going to work
• 24:28
Speaker 7: extremely hard to open them back up, because it will
• 24:30
Speaker 7: be difficult for any Republican in the state currently, no
• 24:33
Speaker 7: matter what their profile, their name, ID, or their ability
• 24:35
Speaker 7: is to especially for true conservatives like myself, to allow
• 24:40
Speaker 7: independence and non affiliates to come into the Republican Party
• 24:44
Speaker 7: and pick our leaders for the general election. I don't
• 24:47
Speaker 7: think is right, and the Republican Party has decided that
• 24:50
Speaker 7: they don't think it's right, and the party voted that way.
• 24:53
Speaker 7: And I'm calling people daily. You know, I've had a
• 24:56
Speaker 7: lot of calls. People don't even know who I am,
• 24:57
Speaker 7: and they're excited I'm running against her because they know
• 24:59
Speaker 7: they don't want her anymore. And we have to we
• 25:02
Speaker 7: have to continue forward with this fight all the way
• 25:06
Speaker 7: to the end. So getting out early before this cycle
• 25:08
Speaker 7: is even over is paramount to our messaging.

• 25:31
Speaker 4: at some there's been some economic news in West Virginia,
• 25:33
Speaker 4: and I talked to several people on the show about this,
• 25:36
Speaker 4: about some positive economic news. You know, we've got new Core,
• 25:39
Speaker 4: We've got Berkshire Hathaway, We've got the green facility there
• 25:43
Speaker 4: in South Charleston, and it seems like, and I understand
• 25:46
Speaker 4: and talking to some of the folks in economic development front,
• 25:49
Speaker 4: that even more big announcements are coming. That's all well
• 25:51
Speaker 4: and good. And I live in an area that's doing
• 25:54
Speaker 4: pretty well in Tay's Valley, Eastern Panhandle's doing pretty well.
• 25:57
Speaker 4: But you go to some other areas, more rural areas
• 26:00
Speaker 4: down to places like McDowell County, Mingo County, not so much.
• 26:04
Speaker 4: How if elected senator, how do we we got all
• 26:07
Speaker 4: these good things are happening to West Virginia. How do
• 26:09
Speaker 4: we get that to go everywhere in the state?
• 26:11
Speaker 7: Though, Yeah, so there's a lot of people right now.
• 26:13
Speaker 7: I think in West Virginia, some people that you are
• 26:16
Speaker 7: in political positions that think parts of the state are
• 26:18
Speaker 7: not salvageable. So we're going to focus on the parts
• 26:21
Speaker 7: of the state that are doing well and try to
• 26:22
  Speaker 7: promote that. That's not a strategy I take. There's the
• 26:25
Speaker 7: problems we have in the northern part of the state
• 26:27
Speaker 7: are the same problems we have in the southern part
• 26:29
Speaker 7: of the state. Some of the problems in the panhandles
• 26:31
Speaker 7: are a little different than the interior, but overall we're
• 26:33
Speaker 7: dealing with the same problems overall. So we have to
• 26:37
Speaker 7: put together a solution and a strategy at the federal
• 26:41
Speaker 7: level at the state level to continue to try to
• 26:43
Speaker 7: attract business. But I hate to say, all of these
• 26:46
Speaker 7: economic developments that we see, if we don't get our
• 26:49
Speaker 7: workforce to the level that it needs to be, a
• 26:51
Speaker 7: lot of these taxpayer funded opportunities that West Virginia has
• 26:56
Speaker 7: been able to make happen here recently could decline and
• 27:00
Speaker 7: could go away. So it's so important now that we
• 27:02
Speaker 7: fix the education system. It's so important now that we
• 27:05
Speaker 7: fix our education system at the state level to where
• 27:08
Speaker 7: we get more vocational more equipment operators, more electricians, more HVAC.
• 27:12
Speaker 7: We got to get people that have an idea what
• 27:14
Speaker 7: they want to do and have a little bit of
• 27:16
Speaker 7: skill set before we just kick him out at eighteen
• 27:18
Speaker 7: and they don't know anything.
• 27:20
Speaker 4: Let's talk about let's get away from your race for
• 27:22
Speaker 4: a moment and let's take a look at maybe at
• 27:24
Speaker 4: the governor's race or the Senate race. Is there any
• 27:27
Speaker 4: way any way possible that Steve Williams beats Patrick Morrissey
• 27:33
Speaker 4: or the Glenn Elliet beats Jim Justice.
• 27:35
Speaker 7: There is zero percent chance that Glenn Elliott beats Jim Justice.
• 27:40
Speaker 7: Jim Justice is a political Leviathan like I have never
• 27:44
Speaker 7: seen in West Virginia politics. He is definitely probably the
• 27:49
Speaker 7: most successful governor that I've seen in my lifetime and
• 27:52
Speaker 7: will go down as one of the most prolific politicians
• 27:54
Speaker 7: I think in current West Virginia history. Although I don't
• 27:57
  Speaker 7: believe he's a conservative and I disagree with a lot
• 27:59
Speaker 7: of a lot of things that he did, but the
• 28:01
Speaker 7: Democrats have just no chance in this state. And Glenn
• 28:05
Speaker 7: Elliott I was very surprised that he decided to adopt
• 28:07
Speaker 7: a Robert see Bird embracing strategy. I'm not sure how
• 28:11
Speaker 7: Bird helps him in his race. So there's no chance
• 28:14
Speaker 7: there for Elliot. He's run a hard campaign, but he's
• 28:17
Speaker 7: got just question is how big of a margin is
• 28:19
Speaker 7: he going to lose.
• 28:20
Speaker 4: Pot It's just kind of where we are right now.
• 28:22
  Speaker 4: It's a state.
• 28:22
Speaker 7: Has he worked hard enough to get twenty percent of
• 28:25
  Speaker 7: the vote. I don't know.
• 28:26
Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I'll say this about Glenn Elliott. He's out
• 28:28
Speaker 4: there working, but I don't know necessarily that that's going
• 28:31
Speaker 4: to do a whole lot of good because it's just
• 28:33
Speaker 4: where we are right now. That's not a negative a
• 28:35
Speaker 4: jab at Glen Elliott or Steve Williams. I mean, they're
• 28:38
Speaker 4: both good people, but it's just where we are right now.
• 28:41
  Speaker 15: Man.
• 28:41
Speaker 4: And at somebody of your age, you may not. I mean,
• 28:43
Speaker 4: I know you studied politics. I could probably ask you
• 28:45
Speaker 4: a question about, you know, the election in eighteen eighty
• 28:47
Speaker 4: and you'd be able to tell me. But it's just
• 28:50
Speaker 4: where we are right now. And I'm somebody that remembers
• 28:52
Speaker 4: and comes from a highly democratic area. Eighty three years
• 28:55
Speaker 4: the Democrats were in charge of the state and it's
• 28:59
Speaker 4: just been a around and a different mindset on behalf
• 29:02
Speaker 4: of the voters. Like I think it's going to be
• 29:04
Speaker 4: studied years and years and years from now by historians
• 29:08
Speaker 4: outside West Virginia. Why this sudden change.
• 29:10
Speaker 7: Yeah, Steve Williams race, real quick, I'll say what I'm
• 29:14
Speaker 7: looking for in that governor's race is a couple of things.
• 29:16
Speaker 7: I want to see how well Morrissey performs. How well
• 29:19
Speaker 7: does he do? Does Marshall we s Wilson get some
• 29:22
Speaker 7: of the anti Morrissey vote when there's a lot of
• 29:25
Speaker 7: it out there when you talk about Capitol, Miller and
• 29:27
Speaker 7: Miller and Warner people. Also does Erica Kalinitch the Libertarian candidate?
• 29:32
  Speaker 7: Does she outperform?
• 29:33
  Speaker 15: You know?
• 29:33
Speaker 7: Does she get more than one or two percent? How
• 29:36
Speaker 7: strong does Morrissey go in? How clear is his mandate
• 29:39
Speaker 7: ultimately to govern in this five person race. That's what
• 29:42
Speaker 7: I'm looking for is does Morrissey run weaker than expected
• 29:44
Speaker 7: this governor's race? That's the only thing to really watch.
• 29:47
Speaker 7: Nobody else has a chance to be Patrick.
• 29:49
Speaker 4: So from today forward, let's take on today's date October
• 29:54
Speaker 4: tenth through the primary May twenty twenty six. What does
• 29:57
Speaker 4: that look like for you in this race against Shelley
• 29:59
Speaker 4: more Capital. I mean, you do. You're trying to raise
• 30:02
  Speaker 4: some money.
• 30:03
Speaker 7: I know that we're not going to get to the
• 30:05
Speaker 7: United States Center with zero dollars. I need people to
• 30:07
Speaker 7: go to gasserud four WV dot com and donate a
• 30:10
Speaker 7: dollar five dollars. I need people that can volunteer, old, young,
• 30:14
Speaker 7: middle aged. I want to build a coalition of coal miners,
• 30:18
Speaker 7: of contractors, of service workers, state workers, you name it.
• 30:23
Speaker 7: I need everybody to get involved in this race so
• 30:26
Speaker 7: we can change West Virginia for the better. But what
• 30:30
Speaker 7: this race is going to look like for me is
• 30:31
Speaker 7: getting on the phone, making lots of calls, going to DC,
• 30:34
Speaker 7: trying to raise money and taking money from people that
• 30:38
Speaker 7: I'm going to be able to take money from. I'm
• 30:40
Speaker 7: not taking money from people I don't want, you know,
• 30:41
Speaker 7: I don't agree with their philosophy or their politics. And
• 30:45
Speaker 7: it's going to be traveling around. I'm going to Mercer
• 30:47
Speaker 7: County today. We're headed there to speak to a Republican
• 30:49
Speaker 7: Executive Committee. I'm going to see some of the storm
• 30:52
Speaker 7: issues down there as well and connect with people in
• 30:53
Speaker 7: Mercer County, and we're going to do a lot of that.
• 30:55
Speaker 7: We're going to get in our vehicle and we're going
• 30:57
Speaker 7: to travel county by county, all fifty five counties, and
• 30:59
Speaker 7: we're going to meet up everybody. We're gonna flash campaign.
• 31:01
Speaker 7: I learned a lot my first race in that second
• 31:04
Speaker 7: congressional district, and I really have a more comprehensive plan
• 31:08
Speaker 7: now to get elected. My name idea is strong in
• 31:10
Speaker 7: the northern part of the state, not known in the
• 31:12
Speaker 7: southern part of the state. That's why we're starting early.
• 31:14
Speaker 7: That's why we're headed too important counties like Mercer. That's
• 31:17
Speaker 7: why we're on probably one of the most important counties
• 31:19
Speaker 7: in the election in the closed primary of twenty twenty six,
• 31:22
Speaker 7: which is Canawa County. This is a place where I'm
• 31:24
Speaker 7: going to have to do very well to beat Senator Capitol.
• 31:27
Speaker 7: So I hope you can bring me on your show
• 31:28
  Speaker 7: some more.
• 31:29
Speaker 4: Absolutely, wish you the best of luck. Man. Thanks a lot, Hey, Dave,
• 31:32
Speaker 4: thanks for having me.
• 31:32
Speaker 7: You have a great day.
• 31:33
Speaker 4: Thank you as well. Alex gasserot again. He is a

Speaker 7: beat on sometimes by people from Rutgers that stayed up

Speaker 7: all night studying this stuff and arguing things I didn't

• 35:08
Speaker 4: those two, says Ah. Texter, Texas says Alex reference to

Speaker 4: Alex the gas root. Our last guest likes the monotov
• 35:17
Speaker 4: cocktail politics of Trump Conservatism. Shelley is too professional for
• 35:21
Speaker 4: and not enough of bomb throwing semi literates. Okay, I
• 35:24
Speaker 4: can't read the rest of that. Uh sorry, Uh, let's see.
• 35:30
Speaker 4: Is a gas route a MAGA stopped to steal Republican
• 35:34
Speaker 4: like Shelley? If so, why would voters get give up
• 35:36
Speaker 4: Shelley's tenure? Uh for a new senator? If not, I
• 35:40
Speaker 4: wish I could vote for you in the primary, But
• 35:41
Speaker 4: the West Virginia MAGA Republicans don't want outsiders voting in
• 35:45
Speaker 4: their primary. Tex says he sounds like someone who would
• 35:48
Speaker 4: reduce or eliminate FEMA funding, and workers text says he
• 35:52
Speaker 4: sounds unhinged. It would be dumb to get rid of
• 35:55
Speaker 4: Shelley for someone who votes just like her but won't
• 35:57
Speaker 4: have the tenure she does. However, there's a chance, because
• 35:59
Speaker 4: making some decisions is what West Virginia voters do best.
• 36:07
Speaker 4: Tex says this Conservatives, as used by Alex g means
• 36:10

• 36:20

• 36:23
Speaker 4: about the national GOP? Did it grow or decline? And
• 36:26
Speaker 4: how does our GP compared to the Roman Empire? It's
• 36:28
Speaker 4: just silly stuff, Tex, I can't read that, Texas, Dave.

• 36:47
Speaker 4: had a idea that that was going to be the answer,
• 36:50
Speaker 4: But you know, they've been around a while. And the thing,
• 36:53
Speaker 4: the cool thing about the Kentucky head hunters. Is they
• 36:55
Speaker 4: didn't really get discovered untill they were all in their forties.
• 36:57
Speaker 4: Now they're all in their like seventies and eighties, and
• 36:58
  Speaker 4: they're still out.
• 36:59
Speaker 8: There with not a hater.
• 37:00
Speaker 7: Look, not a hater.

  Speaker 4: You're just not a knower.
• 37:02

Speaker 7: That voice you hear is a million.
• 37:14
Speaker 4: Iic Ley from West Virginia. Watch how are you?
• 37:17
Speaker 15: I'm good? How are you this morning?
• 37:18
Speaker 4: I'm doing fine. So the special session ended late Tuesday night,
• 37:22
Speaker 4: and the big takeaway for a lot of people is
• 37:24
Speaker 4: a compromise that was reached in the governor's proposed tax
• 37:27
Speaker 4: plan five percent to two percent. But I know that
• 37:29
Speaker 4: you were looking at a lot of other things other
• 37:31
Speaker 4: than just taxes. How you're focused on that, but some
• 37:33
Speaker 4: other things when they usually do involve children.
• 37:36
Speaker 15: Yes, I was watching a child and dependent care tax
• 37:40
Speaker 15: credit which did pass. This is gonna be for families
• 37:43
Speaker 15: who are already receiving the federal version of Child and
• 37:47
Speaker 15: Dependent Care tax credit, which did pass. This is gonna
• 37:50
Speaker 15: be for families who are already receiving the federal version
• 37:53
Speaker 15: of this tax credit. They're already paying for childcare. Now
• 37:56
Speaker 15: they can get fifty percent of that back through a
• 37:58
Speaker 15: state level program. It's about two hundred dollars on average
• 38:02
Speaker 15: for West Virginia families, maybe three hundred, which many lawmakers
• 38:06
Speaker 15: noted is not even what it costs for a week
• 38:08
Speaker 15: of childcare, but it is something and the governor was
• 38:11
Speaker 15: excited about that. I asked him yesterday why he didn't
• 38:14
Speaker 15: include other childcare bills, and he said, you know, we
• 38:17
Speaker 15: just got to make it a priority. I thought this
• 38:20
Speaker 15: was the time maybe we can make it a priority.
• 38:22
Speaker 15: But that was a thing that got through, and he
• 38:25
Speaker 15: was very excited about it and said it's a good start.
• 38:28
Speaker 4: I had definitely get Kaylee Young on Tuesday show that
• 38:31
Speaker 4: was right after a late night on Monday, and then
• 38:34
Speaker 4: had her on live from the Capitol, and although she
• 38:37
Speaker 4: wasn't totally thrilled with everything the legislature did during the session,
• 38:40
Speaker 4: she did think it was a good start. Would you
• 38:42
Speaker 4: categorize it that way.
• 38:43
Speaker 8: Yeah, I think so.
• 38:44
Speaker 15: I mean, anytime I think lawmakers are going to say
• 38:46
Speaker 15: and him, we can give money back to working families,
• 38:48
  Speaker 15: that's a good thing. So yeah, it's a good start.
• 38:51
Speaker 15: I think the key thing to note though, is that
• 38:53
Speaker 15: that doesn't help the providers who are closing their doors.
• 38:57
Speaker 15: I'm not sure if you talked on your show about
• 38:59
Speaker 15: even By Center Preschool here in Kennaught County. They are
• 39:02
Speaker 15: shutting their hurts, the two room and that you know,
• 39:06
Speaker 15: that's a significant loss for this area.
• 39:08
  Speaker 14: Right.
• 39:08
Speaker 15: So while it's great to see money going back to families,
• 39:12
Speaker 15: it's not solving providers financial situations. And these are families
• 39:16
Speaker 15: already paying for childcare, so it's not going to get
• 39:18
Speaker 15: more families into that market.
• 39:21
Speaker 4: And this is something, as I said, you write about
• 39:23
Speaker 4: a variety of different things, and I'll give you time
• 39:25
Speaker 4: to plug that a little bit later on. You cover
• 39:26
Speaker 4: a lot of different things, but this is something that
• 39:29
Speaker 4: you have kind of focused on a whole lot, and
• 39:31
Speaker 4: it's just child issues in general in West Virginia.
• 39:34
Speaker 15: Yeah, it's really important to me. You know, I'm also
• 39:36
Speaker 15: a mother, so I think it's personal to me now too.
• 39:38
Speaker 15: But I have been able to see throughout my career
• 39:41
Speaker 15: and over the last ten years that decisions that are
• 39:44
Speaker 15: made at the Capitol directly affect children, and they truly
• 39:47
Speaker 15: affect our most vulnerable children. And we have, you know,
• 39:50
Speaker 15: six thousand kids in foster care. We have thousands of
• 39:53
Speaker 15: homeless students in West Virginia, so many kids being raised
• 39:56
Speaker 15: by grandparents. I think all of us know someone who
• 39:58
Speaker 15: is raising their grandchild, right, So this is not a
• 40:01
Speaker 15: small percentage of West Virginia children. So for me, that
• 40:04
Speaker 15: accountability focus on how we are caring for vulnerable children
• 40:08
Speaker 15: is really important to me. And circling back to the
• 40:10
Speaker 15: tax cut, that forty six million dollar price tag for
• 40:14
Speaker 15: that two percent additional tax cut is going to be
• 40:17
Speaker 15: paid for by what we were told is extra money
• 40:20
Speaker 15: from the health departments, the three new health departments budgets.
• 40:24
Speaker 15: Now lawmakers are saying that is extra money. But I asked,
• 40:28
Speaker 15: multiple times, can you tell me exactly where this money
• 40:31
Speaker 15: is coming from? What we see any cuts? And no
• 40:34
Speaker 15: one could give that one hundred percent a surety, And
• 40:36
Speaker 15: the health departments didn't respond to my emails. And so
• 40:39
Speaker 15: those are the departments that oversee child protective services and
• 40:42
Speaker 15: foster Care, and that led several Democrats to vote against
• 40:45
Speaker 15: that tax cut because they said, I don't feel comfortable
• 40:48
Speaker 15: taking money away from the programs that oversee potentially taking
• 40:52
Speaker 15: money from these really important programs for children.
• 40:55
Speaker 4: And again, when you see these stories and these headlines,
• 40:58
Speaker 4: I know you've covered them, and you and I talked
• 41:00
Speaker 4: about on the show in the past, and you see
• 41:01
Speaker 4: these stories about you know, the situation down in Boone County,
• 41:04
Speaker 4: the tragic story with the young girl there, and then
• 41:06
Speaker 4: you see the ones in Cistonville, and there are just
• 41:08
Speaker 4: so many others and that's just what we know about.
• 41:10
Speaker 4: We don't know about the ones that haven't come to
• 41:13
Speaker 4: surface yet, that are happening as we speak right now. Sadly,
• 41:16
Speaker 4: we see all these things and it looks like and
• 41:18
Speaker 4: there's always finger pointing going around, but it looks like
• 41:21
Speaker 4: that a lot of these things could have been discovered
• 41:25
Speaker 4: much easier if we had that. And I'm not this
• 41:27
Speaker 4: is not a knock against the workers. I'm just saying
• 41:29
Speaker 4: if we had enough people in those positions, if we
• 41:31
Speaker 4: paid them more to be able to do this, because
• 41:35
Speaker 4: you can't, in my opinion, and this is just based
• 41:38
Speaker 4: this is totally my opinion, you can't run the things
• 41:41
Speaker 4: in twenty twenty four the way that you did with
• 41:44
Speaker 4: the same number of people, even with less of a
• 41:47
Speaker 4: population as you did in nineteen seventy six. I mean,
• 41:49
Speaker 4: because it's a totally different world about there. And I
• 41:52
Speaker 4: have told the story before. My parents divorced when I
• 41:56
Speaker 4: was five. Okay, Luckily I had had good I had
• 41:58
Speaker 4: good family members on both sides, you know, and I
• 42:01
Speaker 4: didn't get too much out of line. But I was
• 42:03
Speaker 4: like the only kid in my grade school class whose
• 42:04
Speaker 4: parents were even divorced. Okay, now we've kind of flipped that.
• 42:09
Speaker 4: And you mentioned the number of grandparents that are raising
• 42:11
Speaker 4: kids a number of homeless kids, and homeless doesn't necessarily
• 42:15
Speaker 4: have to be I'm living under a bridge. Homeless can be.
• 42:18
Speaker 4: I'm going from couch to couch, I'm saving with you know,
• 42:20
Speaker 4: I'm staying with my friend tonight, and I'm saying my
• 42:23
Speaker 4: grandmother and I that constitutes homeless. My point in all
• 42:25
Speaker 4: this is to say, we just got a whole lot
• 42:27
Speaker 4: more issues now than what we did. In my opinion,
• 42:30
Speaker 4: we can't address them the way we did in years past.
• 42:32
Speaker 15: Yeah, and we're seeing that spill over to our education outcomes, right, Like,
• 42:36
Speaker 15: one of the major education bills this past regular session
• 42:39
Speaker 15: that didn't pass was about student discipline, and lawmakers who
• 42:42
Speaker 15: are also public school teachers were very clear, We're not
• 42:45
Speaker 15: saying that kids are worse or not behaving as well
• 42:49
Speaker 15: as they did twenty years ago. The problem is so
• 42:51
Speaker 15: many kids are coming into our classrooms with extreme trauma.
• 42:55
Speaker 4: Right, trauma that a lot of people can't even imagine
• 42:59
Speaker 4: these kids deal with you.
• 43:00
Speaker 15: Yeah, and our child poverty rate is at twenty five percent.
• 43:03
Speaker 15: We have students who go home that don't have food
• 43:05
Speaker 15: at home, right, So there are a lot of issues
• 43:08
Speaker 15: from our child welfare system that are directly spilling over
• 43:10
Speaker 15: to other parts of our government.
• 43:12
Speaker 4: For sure. What other stories are you looking on beyond
• 43:15
Speaker 4: the special session? I think I'm going to finally put
• 43:17
Speaker 4: the special session to rest. But what's over the next
• 43:19
Speaker 4: couple of months, what are you gonna be looking at?
• 43:21
Speaker 15: Well, I am really looking into I'm continuing to look
• 43:24
Speaker 15: into foster care, of course, and one of the things
• 43:26
Speaker 15: I'm focused on right now is just the number of
• 43:28
Speaker 15: foster kids who are staying in hotels and temporary shelters.
• 43:30
Speaker 15: It has been a struggle to get that information but
• 43:33
Speaker 15: I have been contacted more than usual from people about
• 43:38
Speaker 15: children in hotels. In fact, I got an interesting email
• 43:41
Speaker 15: from someone who was on vacation in West Virginia and
• 43:44
Speaker 15: noticed some teens walking around a hotel and just felt
• 43:48
Speaker 15: like something was off and talked to them, and it
• 43:49
Speaker 15: was a group of foster kids, and so they reached
• 43:52
Speaker 15: out to me and said, you know, I'm kind of
• 43:53
Speaker 15: concerned about what was going on here. And so anyway,
• 43:55
Speaker 15: all that to say, that's something I'm looking into. And
• 43:57
Speaker 15: I think also just watching education this year, you know,
• 44:00
Speaker 15: our schools are taking a financial hit because those COVID
• 44:03
Speaker 15: dollars are waning, They're going away. We've got kids leaving
• 44:07
Speaker 15: public schools for Hope scholarship, and it just seems like
• 44:11
Speaker 15: every time I look at local news headlines, they're talking
• 44:13
Speaker 15: about how their local counties are struggling to have enough
• 44:16
Speaker 15: teachers and pay their bills.
• 44:18
Speaker 4: And speaking of which, I'll after I let you go,
• 44:20
Speaker 4: I'm going to come back from the break and I'm
• 44:21
Speaker 4: going to talk a little bit about the the We
• 44:23
Speaker 4: had a second night of hearings last night on consolidation
• 44:26
Speaker 4: and closing schools. This one was the McKinley Middle School
• 44:29
Speaker 4: in St. Albans and the decision was made by the
• 44:31
Speaker 4: board to shutter that school and consolidate it with Hayes.
• 44:34
Speaker 4: I think it is five to nothing. That was the
• 44:37
Speaker 4: way the board went. And these board members are really,
• 44:40
Speaker 4: really in a bad situation because if you look at it,
• 44:44
Speaker 4: nobody wants their community school closed. However, the buildings are
• 44:49
Speaker 4: in many cases in bad condition. It takes more to
• 44:51
Speaker 4: operate them than their worth, and the kids just aren't there.
• 44:54
Speaker 4: And it's and the problem is is that people It's
• 44:57
Speaker 4: not just population drain, it's that parents are choosing alternative
• 45:02
Speaker 4: ways of educating their kids.
• 45:03
Speaker 15: Yeah, and if we could circle back to special session
• 45:05
Speaker 15: real quick. I don't know if you talked about this yet,
• 45:07
Speaker 15: but one of the I think one of the more
• 45:10
Speaker 15: significant bills from the special session that maybe hasn't gotten
• 45:13
Speaker 15: as must coverage is that lawmakers approved a bill that
• 45:16
Speaker 15: would allow charter schools, which are public schools in West Virginia,
• 45:19
Speaker 15: but it would allow charter schools to access School Building
• 45:22
Speaker 15: Authority funds they can now apply for them to start
• 45:25
Speaker 15: their brick and mortar schools. And then lawmakers put five
• 45:27
Speaker 15: million dollars in that budget for charter schools to access.
• 45:30
Speaker 15: So when you talk about declining schools, schools that need repairs,
• 45:36
Speaker 15: that's part of the reason they are closing these schools.
• 45:38
Speaker 15: And now charter schools are allowed to access that money.
• 45:40
Speaker 15: That definitely was a point of contention for the Teachers'
• 45:43
Speaker 15: Union and other people as that bill passed on Tuesday.
• 45:46
Speaker 4: Million nicely. I appreciate you being there. Remind folks where

Speaker 4: As expected, the Board of Education Knawh County of References
• 50:09
Speaker 4: earlier voted five to nothing to close McKinley Middle School.
• 50:12
Speaker 4: McKinley now will now consolidate with Hayes Middle School. Overall
• 50:15
Speaker 4: plan is to shut down six schools in Kanaw County
• 50:18
Speaker 4: due to declining enrollment and budget concerns. Other four schools
• 50:21
Speaker 4: that the board will vote on are Mary Ingles Elementary,
• 50:23
Speaker 4: Malden Elementary, Bell and also Middland Trail Elementary. Those hearings
• 50:27
Speaker 4: are coming over the next couple of weeks, you know,
• 50:29
Speaker 4: and as I said, it's never easy. These things happen.
• 50:32
Speaker 4: No one wants it to their local schools, but it's
• 50:34
Speaker 4: a fact of life. Declining enrollment, rising cost to keep
• 50:38
Speaker 4: these schools running, it's what's going to happen. It's rough,
• 50:42
Speaker 4: it is what it is. I know there's some very
• 50:44
Speaker 4: impassioned speeches that have been out there on the school closures,
• 50:49
Speaker 4: and that's that's what it's all about, you know, the
• 50:50
Speaker 4: public speaking in their mind. But in the end, I
• 50:52
Speaker 4: don't think anybody's surprised by the decisions that were made.
• 50:59
Speaker 4: Trix says Flat budgets will magically fix the childcare issues,

Speaker 4: seventies infrastructure. Some of these main electric breakers are upwards
• 51:18
Speaker 4: of fifty thousand dollars because they're so old. A financial
• 51:21
