- 0:05SPEAKER_08: It's the Win At You Panther Podcast brought to you by Les Schwab here on KKRV1047 on our YouTube channel.
- 0:11SPEAKER_08: And we've got two guests joining us right off the bat because this is what it's going to be for the rest of the fall season.
- 0:17SPEAKER_08: And then we get into winter.
- 0:18SPEAKER_08: It's going to continue there too.
- 0:20SPEAKER_08: We have the Panthers of the Week.
- 0:23SPEAKER_08: We have the female and male Panthers of the Week.
- 0:26SPEAKER_08: And uh first of all, we've got Logan Gross Didier.
- 0:28SPEAKER_08: Did I get that right?
- 0:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 0:30SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 0:30SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 0:30SPEAKER_08: I want to make sure.
- 0:31SPEAKER_08: Varsity Soccer.
- 0:33SPEAKER_08: And we also have Jackson Garrett of Varsity Football.
- 0:36SPEAKER_08: Big win on the road last week.
- 0:38SPEAKER_08: First of all, Logan, do I hear this right?
- 0:41SPEAKER_08: Five goals in one game?
- 0:43SPEAKER_04: That is true, yeah.
- 0:45SPEAKER_08: How in the world uh were they that bad?
- 0:48SPEAKER_08: Were you guys that good, or what happened?
- 0:50SPEAKER_04: Um, I would say our team just executed well.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: Like, without my teammates, it was a great they gave me great opportunities with the goal.
- 0:58SPEAKER_04: Like, um, we just really connected the ball well that game, and there was a lot of movement on and off the ball.
- 1:03SPEAKER_04: Um, and we were very driven to execute that game well.
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:07SPEAKER_08: So you get a win on the opener and then you guys stumble the next day, right?
- 1:11SPEAKER_08: Is that what I heard?
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: That team uh we knew that team was gonna be a little harder, just a little faster-paced game that we were trying to prepare for.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: But um I think just the execution wasn't as great that game.
- 1:25SPEAKER_04: I think there was a little I think we were a little nervous, I would say, with an on and off the ball, knowing we're gonna be having to play a faster pace.
- 1:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:33SPEAKER_08: Uh and I hear a 4.0 student as well.
- 1:36SPEAKER_08: And you're a skier too, right?
- 1:38SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 1:38SPEAKER_08: Like extreme, like you're like traveling the world skiing.
- 1:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I am with the U.S.
- 1:43SPEAKER_04: ski team.
- 1:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:45SPEAKER_04: How do you do all that?
- 1:47SPEAKER_04: Um I think a lot of help from my parents, just kind of like organizing, and like without them, I would not be able to do anything that I do.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: Um, but I would just say I'm a very like driven person towards my goals.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 2:01SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 2:01SPEAKER_08: Well, congratulations, female athlete of the week for uh the Winanche Panthers.
- 2:06SPEAKER_08: Hand that over to uh our football player of the week.
- 2:09SPEAKER_08: Uh, we've got Jackson Garrett.
- 2:10SPEAKER_08: Uh Jackson, you guys had a chance to go to California.
- 2:13SPEAKER_08: First of all, how was that trip?
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: It was really fun, actually.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: It was nice to uh be able to compete out of state and see the competition down there.
- 2:20SPEAKER_08: And then have a little fun too while you're there.
- 2:21SPEAKER_08: I mean, getting a 10-0 win is is big, but uh you guys what had some beach time, you went to a college football game, Disneyland, the whole thing, huh?
- 2:30SPEAKER_08: What was your high point for you of the trip?
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: Honestly, the game.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: It was my first snaps as a varsity player and going into it, I was definitely really shaky.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: But after that first play, a run came right in my gap, got a little pop, knocked all off.
- 2:47SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 2:47SPEAKER_08: Uh now I'm I'm still getting myself familiar with the roster.
- 2:50SPEAKER_08: What number are you?
- 2:51SPEAKER_08: I'm 29.
- 2:52SPEAKER_08: 29.
- 2:52SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 2:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you had what, a couple of tackles for a loss?
- 2:55SPEAKER_08: You had a quarterback snap or a sack as well.
- 2:58SPEAKER_08: Uh talk about the defense.
- 3:00SPEAKER_08: I know you guys at team camp were dominant.
- 3:02SPEAKER_08: You go down to California, you kind of don't know what you're gonna face, but uh, you guys shut them out.
- 3:07SPEAKER_08: Feel pretty good about that.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, definitely.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: Um I would say there's definitely a change going on right now.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Uh accredited my defensive coordinator, Foster.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: Um, we're just being built on discipline and showing up like this morning.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: We're changing, uh we're having film basically every day except Thursday in the morning.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: Have time to evaluate our opponent and see what we can do.
- 3:35SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 3:36SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 3:36SPEAKER_08: Uh new routine.
- 3:38SPEAKER_08: And uh I'll tell you what, the defense looks pretty darn good.
- 3:40SPEAKER_08: And you know, usually first game of the of the season, tackling is you know, not the greatest.
- 3:46SPEAKER_08: I thought you guys tackled really well.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 3:49SPEAKER_08: Congratulations.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 3:50SPEAKER_08: Okay, how about school?
- 3:51SPEAKER_08: How are you?
- 3:52SPEAKER_08: Are you are you a four-point as well?
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: Or I'm unfortunately not a four-point.
- 3:56SPEAKER_08: We can't have everybody be a four-point.
- 3:58SPEAKER_08: No.
- 3:59SPEAKER_08: Uh, what do you hope to do after high school?
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm hoping to go into the trades electrical, uh, preferably.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: Um I don't know exactly where I'm gonna go, just kind of where the wind takes me.
- 4:10SPEAKER_08: Okay, okay.
- 4:11SPEAKER_08: Now, Logan, you're probably used to having a metal hanging around your neck.
- 4:15SPEAKER_08: Are you are you used to having a metal around your neck?
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: No, not really.
- 4:19SPEAKER_08: Well, thanks to Hagland's Trophies for providing the medals.
- 4:22SPEAKER_08: Congratulations to the uh week one uh Panthers of the Week.
- 4:25SPEAKER_08: Congratulations, guys.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 4:27SPEAKER_08: All right, we're gonna take a break, come back, and we've got cross country to talk about.
- 4:31SPEAKER_08: We've got the Bond to talk about, we've got a lot to get to here today, including some slow-pitched softball.
- 4:36SPEAKER_08: It's all brought to you by Lex Twab.
- 4:38SPEAKER_08: We'll be back with more of the Wanna Get You Panther podcast right after this.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Let's walk tires has been proudly serving communities for over 70 years, and we've collected thousands of inspiring stories like Kate, who was off on a long road trip with her best friend when the dash lit up like a game show.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: They find the nearest Lexwob.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Turns out they really needed an oil change.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: It was done in a flash road trip.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Lectwob, we're proud to keep you rolling.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Left Schwab tires.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Our greatest story is yours.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Stories for composites inspired by real customer feedback.
- 5:11SPEAKER_08: Well, thanks for joining us here on the One Ant You Panther Podcast.
- 5:14SPEAKER_08: Eric Grandstrom with you and joined by a guy who coaches in the fall and coaches in the spring.
- 5:18SPEAKER_08: He teaches in the building as two as well.
- 5:21SPEAKER_08: We've got uh the cross-country coach, Steve Roach, joining us here.
- 5:25SPEAKER_08: Steve, thanks for taking the time to do this.
- 5:27SPEAKER_07: Yeah, of course.
- 5:27SPEAKER_08: Thank you so much.
- 5:28SPEAKER_08: Have you been on a podcast before?
- 5:30SPEAKER_08: I have not.
- 5:30SPEAKER_08: Oh, really?
- 5:32SPEAKER_08: Okay, all right.
- 5:33SPEAKER_08: I like that.
- 5:34SPEAKER_08: Uh first of all, how long have you been coaching teaching here at the high school?
- 5:38SPEAKER_07: So at Winatchie High, this is my 11th year.
- 5:40SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 5:41SPEAKER_07: Um so I had 26 years, 26 years coaching, 25 overall.
- 5:46SPEAKER_07: But um I started my very first year of coaching here back in 2002 before I moved to the West Side and then came back 10 years ago.
- 5:52SPEAKER_08: Where were you on the West Side?
- 5:52SPEAKER_07: Uh Kentwood High School.
- 5:54SPEAKER_07: Oh, okay.
- 5:54SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 5:54SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 5:55SPEAKER_08: My wife graduated from Kent Ridge.
- 5:57SPEAKER_08: Oh.
- 5:57SPEAKER_08: Which I get the two confused all the time.
- 6:00SPEAKER_07: So it's real confusing facts.
- 6:02SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 6:02SPEAKER_08: Uh so what were you from here originally?
- 6:05SPEAKER_08: Or oh, okay.
- 6:06SPEAKER_07: Grew up in Leavenworth, went to Cascade High School class in 96, so just like Jordan were Kodiaks.
- 6:12SPEAKER_07: So yep, from the Valley.
- 6:13SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 6:14SPEAKER_08: And uh what drew you back?
- 6:15SPEAKER_08: I mean, just kind of being more close to home.
- 6:18SPEAKER_07: Yeah, home, family.
- 6:19SPEAKER_07: Uh my parents still live in Leavenworth, and my wife's family's from Wenatchie, so it was just common sense when the job opened.
- 6:24SPEAKER_08: So were you a trackster in high school?
- 6:26SPEAKER_08: Is that why you just continued to to uh hold that I mean position now with being a track and a cross-country coach?
- 6:33SPEAKER_07: Yeah, no, I I did track since the time I was about five years old.
- 6:36SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 6:36SPEAKER_07: I was a track coach.
- 6:37SPEAKER_07: Uh track all the way through elementary through high school and college, went to Spokane Central, so it's been a part of my life just about as long as I can remember.
- 6:47SPEAKER_08: Uh I was not a track guy.
- 6:49SPEAKER_08: I thought running was, you know, when I had to run in in football practice and basketball when we had to do lines and stuff like that.
- 6:56SPEAKER_08: I was not a fan of that.
- 6:58SPEAKER_08: When you're looking for prospective athletes, especially cross-country, let's talk about what what we're doing right now.
- 7:05SPEAKER_08: Do you have just kids that come up that are a love of running?
- 7:09SPEAKER_08: Or is it you kind of look at a kid and you go, I'll bet he's a runner.
- 7:12SPEAKER_08: I'll bet she's a runner.
- 7:13SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and like anything, it's a spectrum.
- 7:15SPEAKER_07: There's a kids that are like want to get in shape and they want to have a uh community and be part of something positive.
- 7:21SPEAKER_07: There's kids that are really serious and want to, you know, go on and be successful here and maybe run in college.
- 7:26SPEAKER_07: So as far as recruiting, we we take anybody, we don't cut.
- 7:29SPEAKER_07: So um there are there are I if you've ever been in a class of mine or a student, um, I've probably recruited you at some point or another.
- 7:35SPEAKER_07: So I give a lot of sales pitches.
- 7:37SPEAKER_07: Uh-huh.
- 7:37SPEAKER_07: I I give as many of the things that I'm gonna do.
- 7:39SPEAKER_08: Okay, what is the sales pitch to come out for the cross-country team?
- 7:42SPEAKER_07: Well, uh number one, it's uh incredibly positive kids, like people that are some of the highest achieving, hardest working, um, that they're dedicated, I mean, they're usually great students.
- 7:52SPEAKER_07: Our team GPA is usually really high.
- 7:54SPEAKER_07: Um it's really, like I said, positive kids that are doing good things.
- 7:57SPEAKER_07: I mean, when you how many kids are willing to go out and run four, five, six miles or run hills and things like that willingly, you know, the the joke um is our sport is your sport's punishment.
- 8:08SPEAKER_07: And we sort of embrace that.
- 8:09SPEAKER_07: It's not a bad thing to us.
- 8:11SPEAKER_07: We do it because it's hard, and hard things make you better at life.
- 8:13SPEAKER_07: And so I I try to pitch it in regards to um, you know, look, you want something that's gonna make you in great shape, it's gonna help you academically, it stimulates brain function, but also it looks really good on college applications and resumes that it says you're capable of doing hard things, and that appeals to a certain level of kids, and um and that's what makes them so great, is because they're they're willing to put themselves out there and push themselves to the limits all the time.
- 8:37SPEAKER_08: It's a very individual sport, but you're part of a team.
- 8:41SPEAKER_08: How do you how do you balance those two?
- 8:43SPEAKER_07: Yeah, have you seen McFarland?
- 8:45SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 8:45SPEAKER_07: Okay, if you've seen McFarland, you probably know Danny Diaz.
- 8:49SPEAKER_07: Um and even though he wasn't one of the main guys, he ended up being the key character in the end.
- 8:53SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 8:53SPEAKER_07: Uh we've been lucky here to have some really great ones a couple years ago.
- 8:57SPEAKER_07: Kyla Madriaga won a state title, um, but we don't get a team there unless we've got a team of seven kids that are that are backing it up.
- 9:04SPEAKER_07: And you know, your fastest kid's great, but if your fifth kid's way back there, it doesn't matter.
- 9:08SPEAKER_07: So um so really it takes um a full seven to make a team good.
- 9:13SPEAKER_07: And that's one of the things I love about the sport is the the five matters just as much, if not more, than the number one runner at the point.
- 9:20SPEAKER_08: That it's similar for golf too, uh that type of thing.
- 9:23SPEAKER_08: And also, you know, I'm a former wrestler too, and and it's a very individual sport, but it takes the culmination of the team to make things happen.
- 9:31SPEAKER_07: Yeah, exactly.
- 9:32SPEAKER_07: And they, you know, in training and in races, they they're there to push each other, to make each other better, to you know, to to spur each other on.
- 9:39SPEAKER_07: And so yeah, it it is both team and individual.
- 9:41SPEAKER_07: And I love the team part of it.
- 9:43SPEAKER_07: It's such a beautiful thing because I think in any sport, whenever you're doing it, not just for yourself, but for those around you, it becomes a lot more meaningful.
- 9:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I I that's why I love broadcasting high school sports is because it's about the name on the front, not the name on the back.
- 9:58SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 9:58SPEAKER_08: I love that.
- 9:59SPEAKER_08: So you've been at the building for a long time.
- 10:01SPEAKER_08: But but before we start talking about the building and and that type of stuff, I should mention that your first uh uh let's see, your first meet is coming up uh this what Friday, right?
- 10:12SPEAKER_08: Uh in Ellensburg.
- 10:14SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 10:14SPEAKER_08: Tell me a little bit more about that.
- 10:15SPEAKER_08: There's a bunch of teams gonna be there.
- 10:17SPEAKER_07: It's a really unique one, it's a lot of fun.
- 10:19SPEAKER_07: Um it's the Ellensburg Invitational Relays, and it's the only one that I oh I guess there's one other in the state, but the guys and girls together, three guys and two girls make a team, so it's kind of like a relay in track.
- 10:30SPEAKER_07: So um they take turns, they go out and they run.
- 10:32SPEAKER_07: It's only a mile and a half.
- 10:34SPEAKER_07: Normally we run in five Ks.
- 10:35SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 10:36SPEAKER_07: Um so it's a short race, they run partially through water, which makes it kind of interesting.
- 10:39SPEAKER_07: It's truly a cross.
- 10:42SPEAKER_07: It's about 75 meters long.
- 10:44SPEAKER_07: So you're you're salging five.
- 10:46SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 10:46SPEAKER_07: Um but they do that and then they hand off to their teammate, and it's the team time that matters.
- 10:50SPEAKER_07: And so you just whichever team finishes five runners first wins.
- 10:54SPEAKER_07: So it's it's fun.
- 10:54SPEAKER_07: We've done it for several years and it's a highlight.
- 10:56SPEAKER_08: That's a fun way to kick off the season.
- 10:58SPEAKER_08: It really is.
- 10:59SPEAKER_08: Uh you've been a coach here long enough that and and you know being a uh a guy from the valley uh originally that the the track here at the high school it uh it lacks a little something.
- 11:11SPEAKER_08: Actually a lot of something.
- 11:12SPEAKER_08: For for those that don't come out, because there's not a lot of people, unless you're a a parent or something like that, to come out for track meets and such.
- 11:19SPEAKER_08: Kind of describe the track here at Winhatia High School.
- 11:22SPEAKER_08: Well, I'll say for a program that continues to produce state caliber athletes and teams to have that to work on is is tough.
- 11:32SPEAKER_07: It is, it is.
- 11:34SPEAKER_07: Uh normally in a normal life cycle for a track, they get the surface gets replaced every 10 years.
- 11:40SPEAKER_07: Uh it's been almost 30 years since our surface has been replaced.
- 11:43SPEAKER_07: Um there are if you it the track is one of the few parts of our facility here that is open to the public after hours, so you can come and you can walk and you can run and you know you can see it for yourself.
- 11:54SPEAKER_07: You don't have to just take my word for it.
- 11:56SPEAKER_07: Um if you've been out there, you've seen there there are giant like scuff marks and holes.
- 12:00SPEAKER_07: Um we had an incident a couple years ago where a sprinkler took out lane nine.
- 12:05SPEAKER_07: Like we can't use lane nine.
- 12:07SPEAKER_07: Um and uh incident a couple years ago our our hundred meter dash starts and the kids put out their their blocks and you know those big blocks with spikes on them.
- 12:15SPEAKER_07: And anyways, we have a standing rule now because of this that um the blocks will slip because it won't grip well enough.
- 12:20SPEAKER_07: It's just been torn up from too long.
- 12:22SPEAKER_07: And uh several years ago, uh we had a track meet um where uh one of our athletes uh he was supposed to win the race, he was the fastest kid in the district.
- 12:32SPEAKER_07: He goes out and he they didn't call back the starter, didn't see it, and so he ends up third in the race.
- 12:37SPEAKER_07: But had he won that race, we would have won the meet, we would have won the district.
- 12:41SPEAKER_07: Um so and I'm not saying that's you know there's other factors involved, but it's an example, right?
- 12:45SPEAKER_07: That it's just it it's too old.
- 12:47SPEAKER_07: Um we really have to limit the amount of time in in both track and cross that were on it because there's no padding.
- 12:53SPEAKER_07: Uh a normal track, if you walk on it, there's a little bit of a bounce, there's no bounce to it.
- 12:57SPEAKER_07: It's just hard is it's almost like running on concrete all the time.
- 13:00SPEAKER_07: So lots of shin issues, IT band issues, things like that because of it.
- 13:04SPEAKER_08: That's just one of the many things that's under this bond proposal that's being put to voters uh coming up in November.
- 13:11SPEAKER_08: You work in the building too.
- 13:12SPEAKER_08: Uh I've I've talked to people when we've gone out and and uh tried to solicit folks to to help support not only the podcast but our football broadcast that if you go to a volleyball match in September or you go to a basketball game in February, you're either gonna freeze to death or you're gonna sweat to death because there's just no air circulating in this building.
- 13:34SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 13:34SPEAKER_08: Is is I mean, is that everywhere?
- 13:36SPEAKER_07: It is absolutely and I teach you know on the other side of the building and um the the the heat and cold, it's been as I've seen it as high as 89 in my classroom before.
- 13:44SPEAKER_07: Um there's been days where it's a war roomer in my classroom than outside.
- 13:47SPEAKER_07: I don't know how that happens, but um but the other thing that really gets us for across country is the smoke.
- 13:52SPEAKER_07: And you know, they're doing the best they can with the fans and things to make it better.
- 13:56SPEAKER_07: But if we have a smoke day, we don't run here because we're we're required to stay inside if the numbers are above 150.
- 14:02SPEAKER_07: If it's uh over that, we'll go down to town Toyota Center and run around there and run up and down the stadium stairs, and it's a good compromise, but it's because we can't run here.
- 14:12SPEAKER_07: Um it's not safe for our kids to run inside the building.
- 14:14SPEAKER_07: So that's frustrating.
- 14:16SPEAKER_08: But that's yeah, that's that's sad.
- 14:18SPEAKER_08: What else about the building that uh creates challenges for teachers here?
- 14:23SPEAKER_07: Uh well the classroom sizes, uh a lot of people don't realize that the average classroom in Washington State is about 900 square feet, and ours is 700.
- 14:31SPEAKER_07: So the classes are really small, like physically small.
- 14:35SPEAKER_08: So 700 square feet, that's 10 by 7, basically.
- 14:38SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 14:38SPEAKER_08: Now think of that at your house.
- 14:41SPEAKER_08: Some people have bathrooms that are a lot bigger than that.
- 14:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 14:43SPEAKER_08: And that's your classroom.
- 14:45SPEAKER_07: Yep.
- 14:46SPEAKER_07: Yep.
- 14:47SPEAKER_07: And that's what and you know, we uh we one of the things I love about this building and I love about the it is the people here.
- 14:52SPEAKER_07: Um we have so many of us just make the best of it and make the best of it.
- 14:57SPEAKER_07: We have to.
- 14:58SPEAKER_07: And but you know, I think you could really take a pretty sour note, and that's one of the things that's impressed me about the the people here is like, you know, we're gonna do the best with what we have.
- 15:06SPEAKER_07: Um hopefully that can change in the future.
- 15:09SPEAKER_08: As far as the student, you know, and we're gonna talk to students as we go as well about that experience.
- 15:15SPEAKER_08: I this is one of the bigger population bases.
- 15:17SPEAKER_08: This is one of the biggest high schools in the state of Washington, right?
- 15:20SPEAKER_08: I think it was about fifth or sixth, something like that.
- 15:22SPEAKER_08: As far as students in the building, and you've got a building that's pretty tight.
- 15:26SPEAKER_08: And trying to get from class to class, I imagine, it's gotta be heroin.
- 15:31SPEAKER_07: It is.
- 15:31SPEAKER_07: And it's really stressful for especially incoming freshmen or new kids to walk through if you walk through a hallway as a passing period, it it's a zoo.
- 15:39SPEAKER_07: Um you don't move fast, there's just a lot of us, and you know, we've got portables and we've got kids that gotta march all the way across the building, and it's a it's a challenge.
- 15:46SPEAKER_07: Um so yeah, we like I said, we do the best with what we can, but it's um I I just think that our kids deserve better.
- 15:54SPEAKER_07: Um one of the benefits I have of coaching is I get to go to a lot of other schools and see a lot of other schools and and tracks and facilities, and it always amazes me when I go to a place that um you're like wow, this is it it always stands out to me that this is a um the community and how their community is supporting their kids.
- 16:12SPEAKER_07: And it makes me hopeful that because I really believe Wenanchee is a great community because I'm not just here because it's a family, I love this place and I love living here and being part of this building and this community, and I think that we have really good people in this community.
- 16:25SPEAKER_07: And I think that um that they and most of them under understand that that we want to give our kids the best opportunity to to have the the the best that we can, you know, the best that we can give them.
- 16:35SPEAKER_07: So I think they they deserve that.
- 16:37SPEAKER_08: I got into about you teaching.
- 16:39SPEAKER_08: What do you teach?
- 16:40SPEAKER_08: Uh history.
- 16:40SPEAKER_08: History studies.
- 16:41SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 16:41SPEAKER_07: APU's history and psychology.
- 16:43SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 16:44SPEAKER_08: Um for for those that are watching this that that don't have a kid in the district, that don't have a kid at the high school, that maybe never have, because we got a ton of new people that have moved into the Winanchee Valley and the Shillang County that that maybe come from the west side, something like that, and don't know what it is about this place.
- 17:02SPEAKER_08: This school just, I mean, we talked about some of the things with the challenges on the class sizes and the airflow and and things like that.
- 17:08SPEAKER_08: But this physical building is super old, isn't it?
- 17:11SPEAKER_07: Oh, it's crazy.
- 17:12SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 17:12SPEAKER_08: I mean, speaking of history.
- 17:14SPEAKER_07: Yeah, 53 years old, uh, the building.
- 17:16SPEAKER_08: I mean and not a lot has been done to it in 53 years.
- 17:19SPEAKER_07: They've added on a little bit here and there.
- 17:21SPEAKER_07: I mean, I mentioned Cascade, um Cascade since since this building was built, has built three buildings.
- 17:28SPEAKER_07: Um and so it's you know, it's not like it's um it's not unnecessary.
- 17:33SPEAKER_07: In the sense I get from talking to people in the community is that is that they tend to understand that.
- 17:37SPEAKER_07: Uh they understand that that this is a need, not a want, and it's important.
- 17:42SPEAKER_07: Um so yeah, and the other part is I think you know, people that are coming in um from elsewhere and well these children you know that we're educating our future, they're the ones that are gonna be paying taxes, voting, you know, making society go for the next uh many years.
- 17:57SPEAKER_07: And I think we owe it to them to give the best, you know, opportunity to do that.
- 18:01SPEAKER_08: And the same is we would want it for any student anywhere, not just Winnache, but we want to give them the best that we can to I per purposefully did not ask Steve to say yes, no, vote this way, vote that way.
- 18:13SPEAKER_08: I just wanted to give a perspective from inside the building on what it's like as an educator, what it's like as a coach, and what it's like for for these students too.
- 18:22SPEAKER_08: So thank you for doing that.
- 18:23SPEAKER_08: I appreciate it.
- 18:24SPEAKER_08: Uh you can find out more Winanchee School District uh website.
- 18:27SPEAKER_08: Uh you can learn about the the bond issue and what's going on and what the the potential is.
- 18:32SPEAKER_08: And uh I imagine as a teacher in the building, if this passes, I mean it's gonna take obviously several years for it to actually come to fruition, but that's gotta be pretty exciting to look at that and and go, man, that would sure be nice.
- 18:45SPEAKER_07: Yep, oh, it'd be amazing.
- 18:47SPEAKER_07: And um, I mean, yeah, just that what opportunity we give our kids to to have a first class facility and reflect how our community feels about them, which is we love them, we support them, and we want them to have the best that we can.
- 19:00SPEAKER_07: Thanks for taking the time, appreciate it.
- 19:02SPEAKER_08: Steve Roach joining us here, uh track cross country and their first meet coming up against Ellensburg on Friday.
- 19:08SPEAKER_08: We'll take a break, come back, and we'll talk to a Hall of Famer come to be.
- 19:12SPEAKER_08: Dale Blair joins us next here on the Winanchu Panther Podcast brought to you by Leswab.
- 19:29SPEAKER_04: Everything is like tires, brakes, and everything checked out fantastic.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: Thanks so much.
- 19:46SPEAKER_08: Well it's your pants.
- 19:47SPEAKER_08: The podcast continues here on uh KKRV1047 on our YouTube channel, as well as the audio portion of this.
- 19:54SPEAKER_08: And I'm gonna try to remind myself to talk about who I'm talking to a little bit more for you audio folks.
- 20:00SPEAKER_08: Dale Blair, for those that are watching the video, you recognize this guy, the uh former, supposed to be retired athletic trainer here at Winatchia High School.
- 20:08SPEAKER_08: Are you actually retired now, Dale?
- 20:10SPEAKER_08: I'm fully retired now.
- 20:11SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 20:12SPEAKER_08: Okay, because I kept seeing you at events and and I I came up and gave you bad time a few times saying that.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh last year I came back part-time.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: Um they were a little short on on help, and so I I filled in.
- 20:25SPEAKER_08: Dale is going to be inducted into the Panther Hall of Fame coming up here in a few weeks.
- 20:31SPEAKER_08: Uh congratulations, first of all, that's pretty exciting.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: It's very exciting.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: Thank you very much.
- 20:36SPEAKER_08: Talk about what that means to you and your family to be recognized like that.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: Well, I I've been working with Panther Athletics for a lot of years.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: I started here working through the Wenatchee Valley Clinic in 1984.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: So for my first eight years, I was kind of working with everyone in the area.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: And then for 30 years, I was a full-time teacher and and athletic trainer here.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: And so it's a tremendous honor to be recognized for this body of work.
- 21:06SPEAKER_08: Now, uh I I don't know if you have more pride in just being the athletic trainer or in starting the program here at Winatchie High School with with all of the sciences come up and all of the teams, and now it's a competition in the state and everything else.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: I would say it's a little bit of both.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: I really enjoyed being an athletic trainer, uh, but I also enjoyed uh teaching the sports medicine classes and developing the program and and as you mentioned, uh being able to get a team ready for competition and and going and and competing at the state level.
- 21:38SPEAKER_08: Was that something you had a hand in on the state level to to start an actual competition, so to speak?
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, th there was a competition, and in fact it was Mike Perala, who was the athletic trainer at Davis High School.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: And it was at a football game one night and and he said, Well, he took his kids to a competition and but he didn't really like the way it was run and things.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: And I said, well, you know what?
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: We could probably come up with something on our own.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: And we we did that, and that was back in what in '94, and this the the competition is still still running today.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: We we did it for about the first five years, and then we passed it on to some people who took it to another level.
- 22:18SPEAKER_08: So if my math is right from when you first started uh doing that in 84, that's 42 years, because I just have my class reunion, so my 40-year class reunion.
- 22:26SPEAKER_08: That's how old I am, yes.
- 22:28SPEAKER_08: Uh so that's a long time.
- 22:31SPEAKER_08: How many people have been under your wing that have gone on to do what you did as a profession?
- 22:38SPEAKER_08: Do you have a number?
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: I probably couldn't give you uh a precise number.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: Quite a few, I'm sure.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Uh there's several, and they've gone into all kinds of different fields.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: We've had, of course, athletic trainers, uh, but also physical therapists and physicians and a lot of other uh healthcare professionals and a lot of non-healthcare professionals, which I'm proud of those folks too, yeah.
- 23:02SPEAKER_08: Um there's been I basically uh what is it, kinesiology now?
- 23:08SPEAKER_08: Is that what it's called?
- 23:10SPEAKER_08: The study of human motion.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: Well, that's usually one of the the prerequisite programs for getting for getting into say an athletic training school, yeah.
- 23:19SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 23:19SPEAKER_08: I mean it seems that there's been so much that has evolved in your time, I'm sure, on the college front, as far as this preparatory uh uh studies that that you can now enroll in.
- 23:32SPEAKER_08: I I've I can't tell you how many athletes I talked to that are going they say, you know, what do you what are you gonna do when you get to college and what are you gonna do with your I want to get into sports physical you know th all of that stuff.
- 23:43SPEAKER_08: Sure.
- 23:44SPEAKER_08: Um I went to Pacific University, which I understand has a huge PT program basically.
- 23:49SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 23:50SPEAKER_08: Um how many other colleges?
- 23:51SPEAKER_08: I mean, you gotta love the fact that there's so many choices for the kids out there.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, right now in the state of Washington, there are there's three schools uh that have uh athletic training programs.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: Um and so and now the programs are now master's level.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: So they they kind of combine bachelor's, master's uh together.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: They call them a three plus two, so five years you can become a certified athletic trainer.
- 24:18SPEAKER_08: Is there a limit in the program here at the I know you're not you're retired, but you know, this obviously it it was developed under your guise.
- 24:25SPEAKER_08: Um is there a limit on how many students can be involved in that and where you're gonna see them out on the fields and in on the courts and stuff like that?
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: No, not really any limits here at the high at the high school level.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: Uh there's there's two certified athletic trainers that are teaching in the uh sports medicine program here now.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: And they as they'll just keep filling those classes up as much as there's a need.
- 24:49SPEAKER_08: I don't want to talk about bad stuff, but what's the worst situation you remember that you had to you were you were the guy.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Well, I've been very fortunate not to have really bad really bad, really bad things happen.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Um had a couple of times where I had some neck injuries that we th we thought could potentially have been you know very serious.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: Um we treated them as if they were serious, but they turned out not to be.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: You know, dislocated hips and uh you know a few open fractures and things.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: So um you know, bad stuff, but not really bad.
- 25:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we were doing a wrestling match here a few years ago on TV when I was doing the TV stuff with NCW Life, and uh there was a a broken arm that was very apparent.
- 25:36SPEAKER_08: And I was telling the guys on the cameras, okay, don't get in tight, sure.
- 25:39SPEAKER_08: Don't take a tight shot right there because it's it's pretty obvious.
- 25:42SPEAKER_08: Uh I we see uh an ambulance and paramedics at football games and such, because I guess that's the potential for the most you know injurious type of situation.
- 25:54SPEAKER_08: Um how important is that as from your perspective to have that that on site for like a neck injury, that type of thing?
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: Well, it's very helpful just to have that that backup and have and have you know more more people there.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Um the one thing though you notice that's at varsity football games.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: You gotta realize we also have JV and freshman games that don't have that, plus all the other contests that don't.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: So so literally in a year you have five contests, five home contests that have an ambulance and all the rest don't.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: So um it's great to have them there.
- 26:32SPEAKER_08: How big is the development of the aircast in that whole world?
- 26:36SPEAKER_08: I I see it used so much, especially you know, watching football on Saturdays or Sundays and things like that.
- 26:42SPEAKER_08: I don't know if you guys have one that that that they have access to or not, but it just seems that that has been a a key tool in in initial treatment right there on the spot.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Uh the um in fact I first started using the the vacuum splints uh d during the the Olympics in Los Angeles that I worked in in '84.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: It's the first time that I'd seen it then.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: And as soon as I you know started here, I I knew that's something that I that I wanted to have was the you know the the vacuum splints.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Uh you just you just pull the air out and the beads all clump together and it makes a really nice splint that you can mold for whatever uh injury that you need.
- 27:20SPEAKER_08: Uh Dale, the coming up uh the uh Hall of Fame ceremony, by the way, is coming up in uh a couple of weekends on that Saturday, the 19th uh Hall of Fame cele celebration.
- 27:30SPEAKER_08: They're going to you know celebrate former athletes and teams and things like that and contributors, you're under the contributor category.
- 27:36SPEAKER_08: Um what are you expecting on that day?
- 27:39SPEAKER_08: Are you gonna have a whole bunch of family there and things like that?
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: I should I should have some family there.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: Uh it it's just gonna be really really special.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: Uh you're also seeing you know, you know, some of the other you know folks that uh some of the athletes who are you know that are that are being inducted.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: Um and just you know get to you know catch up with some people and uh it's just it's just a tremendous honor.
- 28:03SPEAKER_08: All your years here at Wanatchee High School and and being in this district and being in the area for so long, uh you you gotta feel like that's an extended family for you, isn't it?
- 28:11SPEAKER_08: I mean, you become pretty close with all these athletes that that come under your guise at one point.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: Athletes, coaches, administrators, such.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's uh um, you know, in in well, like I say, the the 30 years of being here full time, plus you know, on both sides of that, too, if there's there's folks as well.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: So uh that'll be great.
- 28:32SPEAKER_08: Well, congratulations.
- 28:33SPEAKER_08: Appreciate all you've done over the years.
- 28:35SPEAKER_08: Every time I see you, I'm like, okay, we're in good hands.
- 28:37SPEAKER_08: Dale's here.
- 28:39SPEAKER_08: Thank you.
- 28:39SPEAKER_08: Thank you.
- 28:40SPEAKER_08: You bet.
- 28:40SPEAKER_08: Dale Blair is going to be inducted into the Wenatchee High School Hall of Fame coming up on September 19th.
- 28:46SPEAKER_08: Uh, they're gonna have some other stuff that goes on the week leading up to that game, which is on a Saturday, by the way, so just keep that in mind.
- 28:53SPEAKER_08: We will take a break and come back, and when we come back, we're gonna talk some uh high school slow-pitched softball with their coach Taylor Files.
- 29:01SPEAKER_08: It's on the way next here on the Wenatchee Panther Podcast, brought to you by Les Schwab.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Leschwab Tires has always believed that taking care of people is the right thing to do.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: Today, that means more than trusted service.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: It means delivering real value too.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: That's why we're lowering prices on hundreds of tires without changing the service and expertise you've always counted on.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: Consumer Reports named Leshwab the best tire retailer for 2026.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: We'll keep working every day to earn your trust.
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: See Letchwab.com for details.
- 29:34SPEAKER_08: Almost said the pregame show.
- 29:35SPEAKER_08: No, not yet.
- 29:36SPEAKER_08: We'll be doing football coming up on Friday to tell you more about the important dates coming up here in just a moment.
- 29:41SPEAKER_08: Right now we've got Taylor Files, who is the girls slow pitch softball coach here at Wodanche High School.
- 29:47SPEAKER_08: How long now?
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: This is my technically second year.
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: Last year was I was an interim for slow pitch.
- 29:53SPEAKER_08: Got it, got it.
- 29:53SPEAKER_08: And the program's only been around for what, four years now, something like that.
- 29:57SPEAKER_08: It's not very old.
- 29:59SPEAKER_03: No.
- 29:59SPEAKER_08: Um there it might surprise people that there is slow pitch here at the high school, not just the fast pitch in the spring.
- 30:05SPEAKER_08: But I'm sure you get a lot of those athletes that are in spring sports that that play in the fall.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: There's a good amount.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Um a lot of them are doing volleyball and soccer.
- 30:15SPEAKER_03: Um so but we do get a good amount of I would say the younger girls.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: We have a lot of um freshmen and sophomore that come out, but um, yeah, we do get a good amount and it kind of is very nice to reflect for the springtime because I get them both seasons.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 30:30SPEAKER_08: What's your connection to when I'm at you high school?
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: Um, well, I actually went to East Mont.
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: So I they won't hold that against you.
- 30:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't I mean, just being in the valley and then just getting there was a job opening.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: And I actually wasn't really didn't know a lot about slow pitch.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, there wasn't slow pitch when I was in high school.
- 30:51SPEAKER_03: And so I actually was l just looking at the fast pitch job, and then BJ called me last year and was like, we need a slow pitch.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: I was like, Yeah, I'll do it.
- 30:59SPEAKER_03: And actually it's really fun.
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: It's a lot more laid back than a fast pitch.
- 31:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's no stealing, there's no leading off, none of that.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, it's fun and it's cool to be around.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: It's a little more laid back, like I said, but yeah, it's fun to be around.
- 31:16SPEAKER_08: So you're not a teacher?
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: Well, I I have my degree.
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: So I'm looking for a job.
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:22SPEAKER_08: So I graduated two years ago from I think that that's probably good to point out that there's probably a lot of folks who just think, well, of course, you're a coach, that means you're you're teaching, there's a job for you for both.
- 31:33SPEAKER_08: Not necessarily the case.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: No, no, and the teaching side of is very competitive and hard to get right now.
- 31:39SPEAKER_08: So what level of teaching?
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: Uh elementary.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: Yep, so K8.
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I'm looking every day, but it's it's hard.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: It's hard.
- 31:48SPEAKER_08: But I'm working on my master's right now, so you're doing that virtually or okay.
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so it makes coaching really easy.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: And I'm able to sub throughout the day.
- 31:58SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 31:59SPEAKER_08: Um there's been a couple of cancellations early on.
- 32:02SPEAKER_08: I know you had kids that were in the fair that were showing animals and things like that.
- 32:06SPEAKER_08: So that kind of got in the way of practice and such.
- 32:08SPEAKER_08: How are you guys doing now as far as getting kids?
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: We have our first game today.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: To go to SageView down towards Pasco.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, we had to cancel our last week game, and then this Saturday we actually have to cancel.
- 32:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah, G Prep was supposed to be here, right?
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was gonna be a really cool weekend.
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: Um, but again, fair.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: So we have a good we have three or four girls in fair.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: So I mean, what can you do about it?
- 32:28SPEAKER_08: So it's life, right?
- 32:30SPEAKER_08: You make other plans.
- 32:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:31SPEAKER_03: So I mean, it's a bummer, but we have this game and then we'll have a week to prepare for next week.
- 32:36SPEAKER_08: So tell me about the the difference you found in in going from coaching fast pitch, which I'm sure you played fast pitch, yep, to slow pitch in that world.
- 32:45SPEAKER_08: I mean, you talked about no leading off and it's more laid back and that type of thing.
- 32:49SPEAKER_08: I I there's probably an education that has to happen for the girls as well, or are they still playing slow pitch in the younger level?
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: No, uh not that I know of.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: Slow pitch, I mean, starts in high school.
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: I don't know of any younger I mean most of the humble enough that there wasn't fast pitch back then.
- 33:05SPEAKER_08: My sister, in fact, when she went to high school, she goes, I would have loved to have played fast pitch instead of slow pitch.
- 33:10SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 33:10SPEAKER_08: It just didn't exist back then.
- 33:11SPEAKER_08: So the whole world has evolved to where it's all fast pitch now.
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I mean, once they like last week we went into the locker room and drew up on a whiteboard.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: Because I mean a lot of these girls, this is their first time even playing fat softball in general.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: And so they don't even know what like we run to first, we run to second, we run to third.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: Um but I mean really the only difference is is n the base running.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: There's no stealing, no leading off.
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: Um I would say that slow pitch is a lot more hitting.
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: Like you gotta be a hitter to succeed in slow pitch.
- 33:45SPEAKER_08: But um well, and some of the scores you see too, I mean it's incredible.
- 33:50SPEAKER_08: It's a is there is there a mercy rule in this in slow pitch?
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: After five innings, I think it's ten runs after five innings, yeah.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so you have to at least play five in high school.
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 34:00SPEAKER_08: Which five can take a long time if you guys are putting them on them.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: Yep, yeah, yeah.
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: Or you're down by a lot.
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: It's always we don't talk about the name of the thing.
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: We know, but but yeah, it can be a long game.
- 34:13SPEAKER_08: Um does every big nine school now have slow pitch, or is it I believe so.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: No, I believe all big nine schools do.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: Mose I just BJ told me that Moses has four slow pitch teams, which is crazy.
- 34:26SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: But they're a highly successful softball program.
- 34:30SPEAKER_03: So but yeah, so it's growing just slowly.
- 34:33SPEAKER_08: From your perspective, being now two year two basically of the softball program, of those that you're able to get that can fold over into the spring for fast pitch, is it helpful?
- 34:43SPEAKER_08: I mean, it's a different game, it's a different way to bat.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: I mean bat on ball and defense is the same defense.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: So I would say that side of it is very beneficial.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're getting an extra two and a half months of reps that other girls aren't.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Which is huge.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean we did lose a couple girls this year to we have a lot of travel ball.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: So they're playing softball on the outside too.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: But um, no, it's very beneficial, I would say.
- 35:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're getting extra reps, and it gives us coaches also two and a half more months with them than to develop that relationship.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and that connection.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: So I I'm really grateful for it.
- 35:22SPEAKER_08: Uh what's your goal for this fall?
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: Um, for this I was talking to my assistant coach, Katie.
- 35:29SPEAKER_08: I mean, get everybody just you know, so they could play.
- 35:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you know, get past fair and all that.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: Um these girls are really I mean, we have a few that have been playing softball since they could walk, but most of these girls, I mean, it's maybe their first or second year of ever even holding a glove.
- 35:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:46SPEAKER_03: And so we're just trying to let them grow and the knowledge of the sport and just I mean, we really just want them to have fun so that they do come out in the spring and then they do come out in the fall next year.
- 35:59SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: Um, so yeah, just that they can understand it.
- 36:02SPEAKER_08: And I imagine for someone who's never played before, the introduction to the sport better to be slow pitched than fast pitch.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: For base running side, you just you run when the ball's hit.
- 36:16SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, it kind of I say it's like a dumbed down version of soft fast pitch.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: Um, so yeah, it is a good way to learn, and then once spring comes, then it's a little quicker and faster paced.
- 36:27SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it is a good way to learn for sure.
- 36:29SPEAKER_08: Okay, I'm gonna show my ignorance here.
- 36:30SPEAKER_08: Is the ball the same size?
- 36:31SPEAKER_08: Yes, it's weighed a little different.
- 36:33SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 36:34SPEAKER_08: There's like Okay.
- 36:35SPEAKER_08: And I imagine that slow pitch, just like fast pitch, it's all about the pitcher.
- 36:40SPEAKER_08: I mean, you need to hit, but it's all about the pitchers, right?
- 36:42SPEAKER_08: And finding the strike zone.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: And we have we have one pitcher.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: Um, Anna Meisner.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: She's great.
- 36:49SPEAKER_03: She pitched every single inning every game last year, and she'll probably do it again this year.
- 36:55SPEAKER_08: Um, you know, in a way, because it's not like fast pitch where you have a count and you can only pitch so many innings and all that kind of stuff.
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, and I mean fat slow pitch, it's a little less technique, I would say, than fast pitch pitching.
- 37:12SPEAKER_03: But I try to get more girls to do it, but they just I mean, I pitched my whole life, and there's a lot of stress in it and a lot of eyes on you.
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: So I mean I get why girls don't want to, but yeah, right now she's our only pitcher, and I hope she stays strong through the season.
- 37:28SPEAKER_08: Now, this is not gonna be on the air until Thursday, so it's after the games that you have today, which is weird.
- 37:34SPEAKER_08: Um, and then G Prep canceled.
- 37:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 37:36SPEAKER_08: So what's next after that?
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: We have, I believe, Eisenhower next Tuesday at Ike.
- 37:41SPEAKER_03: Okay, on the road.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 37:43SPEAKER_08: So you gotta love playing in that new ballpark you have.
- 37:46unknown: Yeah.
- 37:46SPEAKER_03: No, uh, yeah, it's really, really nice.
- 37:49SPEAKER_03: It's it is hard going from a such a nice field to dirt fields.
- 37:54SPEAKER_03: Because like a lot of the I mean, like again, a lot of these girls have never seen a field and now they've practiced for this nice where there's no balances and the ball comes where you think it's gonna come.
- 38:05SPEAKER_03: And so it'll be good to play on dirt and see what happens, but no, it's an amazing field, and you don't yeah.
- 38:11SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 38:12SPEAKER_08: Uh we're gonna talk to one of your players coming up here.
- 38:15SPEAKER_08: Uh tell me a little bit more about uh Hayden as a person that you've gotten to know her.
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:21SPEAKER_03: Um I kind of knew Hayden, so before the high school, I coached at um I coached for the NCW Sun Devils.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: It's a travel ball team here locally.
- 38:30SPEAKER_03: Um and she I knew her a little bit from that, but she as a person is just caring.
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: And like she again, our team isn't super knowledgeable, and she's out there teaching the girls all I don't even have to go to someone and be like, Hey, you need to do this.
- 38:48SPEAKER_03: I look over and she's doing it.
- 38:50SPEAKER_08: She's a coach on the field.
- 38:52SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, for sure.
- 38:53SPEAKER_03: She's stepping up.
- 38:54SPEAKER_03: Um, she actually wasn't at pra one of our other practices and the field it was so quiet.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: She's just a great leader.
- 39:01SPEAKER_03: When she's there, like all the girls light up and they're like, Oh my gosh, I need to follow Hayden.
- 39:05SPEAKER_08: Um so you definitely notice her absence.
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: Oh, oh, for sure, for sure, for sure.
- 39:09SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I'm really grateful to have her, especially as a new coach, having that leadership on the field side is yeah, I'm really grateful for her.
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: And she's just a great coach.
- 39:18SPEAKER_08: How will she describe you as a coach?
- 39:20SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 39:21SPEAKER_03: Um, I hope.
- 39:24SPEAKER_03: I I really try to make connections with the girls.
- 39:27SPEAKER_03: Like if they don't like the sport, that's fine, but I hope that they're like, oh, my coach cares for me, and that's that's what I want out of it.
- 39:36SPEAKER_03: That I'm there for them, and that's more than what I care about for the sport.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: So I hope that's what she thinks about me.
- 39:43SPEAKER_08: What do you talk about when it's time to play East Mont?
- 39:46SPEAKER_08: Being an East Mont grant.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: Um so me and my assistant coach are both from East Mont.
- 39:53SPEAKER_03: So and we both played softball there, and we really want to win.
- 39:58SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's very mental.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: It's very, very mental.
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: And I feel like a lot of people And the rest of the sports will tell you the same thing.
- 40:04SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you know, it's not the physical so much, it's up here.
- 40:07SPEAKER_03: That's kind of last year during fast pitch, that's what happened to us.
- 40:11SPEAKER_03: Our mental side just took us out.
- 40:13SPEAKER_03: We can easily play with them.
- 40:15SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's you just gotta prepare them mentally, and it's not just the day before that we go play them, it's a couple weeks before East Mont comes that we have to prepare for it.
- 40:26SPEAKER_03: But it's getting them mentally prepared and mentally that we have to always compete at this level.
- 40:32SPEAKER_08: And it's unique too because there's a few of the girls that probably play with each other you know outside of high school.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, a large amount, and that's we had to we have to tell them like, yes, they're they might be your best friend, but on the field, you just they're it's like we're playing Moses Lake or like we're playing Ike.
- 40:50SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: You can't be buddy buddy with them.
- 40:53SPEAKER_03: Like I get it, after the game ends, go give them a hug, go give them a high five.
- 40:56SPEAKER_03: But you have to stay in the competitive mindset to at least compete with them.
- 41:01SPEAKER_08: But well, best of luck this season.
- 41:03SPEAKER_08: Thank you.
- 41:03SPEAKER_08: Keep everybody healthy, that's the most important thing.
- 41:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and uh eligible.
- 41:07SPEAKER_08: That that'll be great once we get past the fairs and all that.
- 41:10SPEAKER_08: But I love the fact that you got kids that are showing animals and yeah, and I love the fair, so yeah.
- 41:14SPEAKER_08: Yeah, life happens despite sports.
- 41:16SPEAKER_08: For sure, for sure.
- 41:17SPEAKER_08: Taylor, nice to meet you.
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: You too.
- 41:19SPEAKER_08: Taylor Files joining us here, and we'll talk with uh one of her players coming up.
- 41:23SPEAKER_08: It's Hayden Delaney, who is a senior.
- 41:25SPEAKER_08: What position does she play?
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: She is usually our center fielder, but for Slow Pitch, she's stepped up and she's our shortstop.
- 41:32SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah.
- 41:32SPEAKER_08: Oh, okay.
- 41:33SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 41:34SPEAKER_08: We'll find out about that transition between center and short coming up as we continue with the Winanche Panther podcast right after this.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: Let's walk tires has been proudly serving communities for over 70 years, and we've collected thousands of inspiring stories.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: Like Kate, who is off on a long road trip with her best friend with the deck lit up like a game show.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: They find the nearest Lash Schwab.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: Turns out they really needed an oil change.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: It was done in a flash road trip stay.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: Let's wob, we're proud to keep you rolling.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: Flashwab tires.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: Our greatest story is yours.
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: Stories are composites inspired by real customer feedback.
- 42:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I recently am trying short.
- 42:26SPEAKER_08: How's that been?
- 42:27SPEAKER_05: It's been pretty good.
- 42:28SPEAKER_05: I've been able to adjust pretty easily because watching like other teammates play that position, but it's a little uncomfortable because I'm not used to cutting and like the different situations.
- 42:36SPEAKER_08: Right, right.
- 42:37SPEAKER_08: And you're not having to throw so far.
- 42:38SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 42:40SPEAKER_08: So that's they've got to be but as a center fielder, you gotta have a pretty good arm anyway.
- 42:44SPEAKER_08: So, you know, it kind of transfers that way, right?
- 42:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I can kind of help like adjust myself so that my the outfielders can throw like a little shorter if they need to, depending on their arm strength.
- 42:54SPEAKER_08: Sure.
- 42:54SPEAKER_08: What's uh how long have you been playing softball?
- 42:57SPEAKER_05: Um I've started when I was around five, but I started with when I use baseball because my parents didn't know that there was a softball organization.
- 43:03SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 43:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 43:04SPEAKER_08: So you played baseball for how long?
- 43:05SPEAKER_05: Um till I was about seven, and then I switched over to DWGSA.
- 43:09SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 43:09SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 43:10SPEAKER_08: So it got in your veins, or you got family that were softball players and around it or yeah, my mom played softball, slow pitch in high school, and then my dad played baseball and also slow pitch.
- 43:20SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 43:20SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 43:21SPEAKER_08: So natural are you a Mariner fan?
- 43:24SPEAKER_08: All right, good.
- 43:25SPEAKER_08: Mariners are kind of struggling.
- 43:26SPEAKER_08: I know.
- 43:27SPEAKER_08: It's been kind of depressing on that regard.
- 43:28SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 43:29SPEAKER_08: Do you have a favorite player?
- 43:30SPEAKER_08: Do you have a favorite uh well, you know, the the college level has become such a big thing as far as fast pitch is concerned.
- 43:36SPEAKER_08: Do you follow that?
- 43:37SPEAKER_05: Um, I watch it occasionally, usually the World Series.
- 43:40SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 43:40SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 43:40SPEAKER_08: University of Washington has had a great program for quite a while and got local connections with uh Tar family.
- 43:46SPEAKER_08: I don't know if you know about that or not.
- 43:48SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 43:48SPEAKER_08: I won I won't go into that, but y those of you who know, you know.
- 43:52SPEAKER_08: Um talk about your coach.
- 43:55SPEAKER_08: Taylor Files.
- 43:56SPEAKER_08: She's uh what, two, three years now? 'Cause Do you play in the spring too?
- 44:02SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 44:02SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 44:02SPEAKER_08: So you're you're around her for two of the three sports seasons.
- 44:06SPEAKER_08: So how is it?
- 44:07SPEAKER_05: It's pretty good.
- 44:08SPEAKER_05: I feel like she's really good at like including everyone and making sure everyone can feel inclusive and making sure that we're able to have fun but also um try our best and stuff.
- 44:18SPEAKER_08: Mm-hmm.
- 44:19SPEAKER_08: She described you as being uh a key person to the team as far as like a leader.
- 44:24SPEAKER_08: Do you see yourself as that?
- 44:26SPEAKER_05: I feel like I do.
- 44:27SPEAKER_05: I try to like hype up the team and keep everyone like focused, but also like trying to have fun and like see the fun side of it instead of just like all stressful, you know?
- 44:34SPEAKER_08: Mm-hmm.
- 44:35SPEAKER_08: Is that something that has you've always had, or is it something that's kind of developed now that you're a senior?
- 44:40SPEAKER_05: I would say I'm more of a shyer person until I get to know people and then I kind of warm up to them a little bit.
- 44:45SPEAKER_08: What's it like your coach was talking about that there are girls turning out for soft pitch slow pitch that have never even played ball at all?
- 44:55SPEAKER_08: How how is that?
- 44:56SPEAKER_05: Um, I mean, I feel like it's pretty nice because then you get to like coach them too, like because uh for the girls that are more experienced, like be to help them and stuff, so it's pretty fun to see them grow too throughout the season.
- 45:07SPEAKER_08: Now, do you play club ball aside from doing high school stuff?
- 45:10SPEAKER_05: Yes, I play for the NCW Sendables.
- 45:12SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 45:12SPEAKER_08: And that uh is ongoing what?
- 45:15SPEAKER_08: Are you playing there now?
- 45:16SPEAKER_05: Uh yes.
- 45:17SPEAKER_05: We're we've holding off on practices because of school, but um we usually practice on the weekends or three days.
- 45:23SPEAKER_08: For those that don't know, talk about that because it you're travel ball, right?
- 45:28SPEAKER_08: So like travel how far?
- 45:30SPEAKER_05: Um we did go to Arizona last year um for a game which was pretty fun.
- 45:34SPEAKER_05: It was we did get destroyed a little bit, but like it's for the experience.
- 45:38SPEAKER_05: We usually travel pretty locally around like Yakima, Sila, Tri-Cities.
- 45:42SPEAKER_05: We did go to Montana a couple times.
- 45:44SPEAKER_08: I was uh talking with your coach about you know when you play Eastwont.
- 45:48SPEAKER_08: I mean, you'll have a lot of your club players that are playing for Eastwont.
- 45:51SPEAKER_08: How is that weird?
- 45:52SPEAKER_08: Is it kind of fun?
- 45:53SPEAKER_08: Is it you know you give them a bad time when you're with the with the dusters and you know, that type of thing?
- 45:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's pretty fun.
- 46:00SPEAKER_05: Um we do like to give them a hard time, joke around and stuff, but still stay focused.
- 46:04SPEAKER_08: Sure, sure.
- 46:05SPEAKER_08: Um as you you've had a a few games that have been had to be canceled because of of player situations and people involved in the fair, I guess.
- 46:15SPEAKER_08: Uh so they couldn't come to practice and things.
- 46:17SPEAKER_08: Which w what's your take on that?
- 46:19SPEAKER_08: I I think it's kind of fun that that they're experiencing other things aside from just trying to do sports.
- 46:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's nice to have other hobbies and things too, but I feel like it's kind of frustrating because we have less less games to play and stuff.
- 46:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 46:31SPEAKER_05: And less for them to get used to the sport and stuff.
- 46:33SPEAKER_08: Sure.
- 46:34SPEAKER_08: The the the season for slow pitch is a little different than fast pitch, right?
- 46:39SPEAKER_08: I mean, every every game is a double, every day you face somebody is doubleheader, and that's the only time you're gonna see them for the season when you get into big nine play.
- 46:48SPEAKER_08: Is that how that works?
- 46:49SPEAKER_08: Or I mean do you play them twice around?
- 46:51SPEAKER_08: I was looking at your schedule, and it seemed like, like you say, there's not a lot of game.
- 46:54SPEAKER_08: I mean, a lot of not not a lot of game days because you're playing two games in that day.
- 46:59SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and it's like, oh, season's over.
- 47:01SPEAKER_08: So I can imagine from your perspective of let's get playing some ball.
- 47:07SPEAKER_08: And you get a chance to play now.
- 47:09SPEAKER_08: This won't drop until Thursday, so it already happened two days ago, but as we record this, it's Tuesday.
- 47:15SPEAKER_08: That's a little confusing.
- 47:16SPEAKER_08: But you guys are playing games tonight, right?
- 47:18SPEAKER_08: Uh yes.
- 47:18SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 47:19SPEAKER_08: So, and that's down towards the Tri-Cities?
- 47:21SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 47:21SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 47:22SPEAKER_08: Do you know what you're gonna do?
- 47:24SPEAKER_08: Is uh you got the whole team together?
- 47:26SPEAKER_08: You ready to go?
- 47:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I hope so.
- 47:28SPEAKER_05: I think we've I think we're pretty ready.
- 47:30SPEAKER_05: I think as long as everyone stays in the game and trying their best, I think we're good.
- 47:35SPEAKER_08: Is it more fun to play close games or is it more fun to just blow people out?
- 47:41SPEAKER_08: I mean, because I see some of those scores like 28 to 2.
- 47:44SPEAKER_08: I'm like, holy cow.
- 47:45SPEAKER_05: I feel like I feel like the adrenaline pumping and stuff when you're closer, I feel like it's more fun because you're like like super into it, super zoned in, you know, trying to like well obviously win.
- 47:55SPEAKER_05: I feel like the blowouts could get kind of boring if you're on the winning side, the losing side.
- 47:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 48:00SPEAKER_05: That's kind of frustrating.
- 48:01SPEAKER_08: Have you have you experienced that on the on the short side?
- 48:04SPEAKER_08: That's not a lot of fun.
- 48:06SPEAKER_08: How do you as a leader now you face that situation?
- 48:09SPEAKER_08: How do you keep everybody's spirits up?
- 48:11SPEAKER_05: Well, like I try to make sure everyone's like included.
- 48:13SPEAKER_05: So like if someone's like playing catch by themselves or watch, I guess I guess you can't really do that, but like try to include everyone.
- 48:19SPEAKER_05: And I don't know, just try to make sure everyone's having fun and not just like, oh, you know, practice again.
- 48:24SPEAKER_08: Mm-hmm.
- 48:25SPEAKER_08: Are you a full-time student here?
- 48:27SPEAKER_08: Uh yes.
- 48:28SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 48:28SPEAKER_08: Because I I run into a lot of running start folks and things like that.
- 48:31SPEAKER_08: What's it like for you here at Winanchee High School to just be a student here?
- 48:34SPEAKER_05: I do only come half day for three days.
- 48:37SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 48:37SPEAKER_05: Or three periods, sorry.
- 48:38SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 48:39SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 48:39SPEAKER_08: So are you doing running start or um no, I'm doing college and high school.
- 48:43SPEAKER_08: Oh, okay.
- 48:43SPEAKER_08: Got it.
- 48:44SPEAKER_08: Um what's it like to be here at Winanchee High School?
- 48:48SPEAKER_08: No, I was talking with the cross-country coach Steve Roach, and he as a teacher, he says, you know, we do the best we can with all the people that are here, but it's crazy.
- 48:56SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that is.
- 48:57SPEAKER_08: In the hallways, I guess it's nuts.
- 48:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, people are going every which way.
- 49:01SPEAKER_08: How is that as a freshman coming in here?
- 49:03SPEAKER_05: Um, I feel like it could be pretty intimidating.
- 49:06SPEAKER_05: I feel like my freshman year is pretty intimidating to just walk in and seeing like all these people and trying to figure out where you're supposed to go.
- 49:11SPEAKER_08: And do you have any older siblings that also?
- 49:13SPEAKER_08: Um no.
- 49:13SPEAKER_05: I actually have a younger brother who's a freshman this year.
- 49:16SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 49:16SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 49:16SPEAKER_08: So you're able to kind of school him on.
- 49:18SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 49:18SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 49:18SPEAKER_08: This and it you did you take a look at his class because it'll go, okay, that's easy.
- 49:22SPEAKER_08: You're gonna go from here to here and gotcha, gotcha.
- 49:25SPEAKER_08: What what uh subjects interest you?
- 49:27SPEAKER_05: Um, I like English.
- 49:29SPEAKER_05: I like writing.
- 49:29SPEAKER_05: I feel like it comes naturally to me.
- 49:31SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 49:32SPEAKER_08: And is that something you're gonna go to college or uh yes, I'm gonna go to college.
- 49:35SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 49:36SPEAKER_08: Have you picked one yet?
- 49:37SPEAKER_05: Um, I was thinking central maybe, because I want to be an early education teacher.
- 49:42SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 49:42SPEAKER_05: So and they have a pretty good teaching program.
- 49:44SPEAKER_08: Okay, alright.
- 49:45SPEAKER_08: You're gonna be doing softball in college too?
- 49:47SPEAKER_08: Um, I don't think so.
- 49:48SPEAKER_08: No, no.
- 49:48SPEAKER_08: This is it.
- 49:49SPEAKER_08: So this is it.
- 49:50SPEAKER_08: Yes, you got this slow pitch season, you got the fast pitch season.
- 49:54SPEAKER_08: Well, you'll probably play it as an adult though, right?
- 49:57SPEAKER_08: I mean, rec league, that type of stuff.
- 50:00SPEAKER_08: So is it true?
- 50:02SPEAKER_08: I mean, I had seniors when I was a freshman tell me, man, you know, it goes by really quick.
- 50:08SPEAKER_08: Has that been the case for you?
- 50:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I feel like it was just yesterday I was a freshman just walking in here.
- 50:12SPEAKER_08: So now are you telling that to freshmen too?
- 50:14SPEAKER_08: You're like, oh, just wait.
- 50:16SPEAKER_08: It goes by so fast.
- 50:17SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 50:18SPEAKER_08: Soak it all up while you can.
- 50:19SPEAKER_08: So if you have any spare time, what do you like to do?
- 50:22SPEAKER_05: Um, I like to paint and do crafts, arts and crafts.
- 50:25SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 50:26SPEAKER_08: So you're a right brain person.
- 50:28SPEAKER_08: Is that is that pretty accurate?
- 50:30SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I think so.
- 50:31SPEAKER_08: Okay, what kind of crafts do you do?
- 50:32SPEAKER_05: Um, I like to make birthday presents and cards like I'm scrapbooking right now for my friend's 18th birthday.
- 50:38SPEAKER_08: Oh okay.
- 50:39SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 50:40SPEAKER_08: Um, so junk journaling, have you heard of this thing?
- 50:43SPEAKER_05: Um, no.
- 50:44SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 50:44SPEAKER_08: That was something I was around the Apple Blossom top ten last year, and one of the contestants said that she was into junk journaling.
- 50:52SPEAKER_08: And I was like, okay, I had to I had to look it up.
- 50:55SPEAKER_08: I had to have have Google as my friend, and and that's journaling with junk from the day.
- 51:00SPEAKER_08: So you go out to lunch with somebody and you keep like a bottle cap from what it what you had, and you actually put that in the journal, and so you have a bunch of things that people just toss away, but you keep it as a keepsake for that particular adventure.
- 51:14SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's interesting.
- 51:15SPEAKER_05: I've never heard of that.
- 51:15SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:16SPEAKER_08: So I I'm not being paid by junkjournaling.com or anything like that.
- 51:22SPEAKER_08: I just thought it was interesting.
- 51:24SPEAKER_08: And you know, I run into people that are crafty, and I thought, well, that'd be kind of fun, a little different.
- 51:28SPEAKER_08: I don't know.
- 51:29SPEAKER_08: You gotta be careful about what you keep, I guess.
- 51:31SPEAKER_08: Because you don't want it to, you know, be a junk journal that smells.
- 51:34SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 51:36SPEAKER_08: Do you have any pets?
- 51:38SPEAKER_05: Um, no, my sister's allergic to literally everything.
- 51:41SPEAKER_08: Oh.
- 51:41SPEAKER_08: Oh, okay.
- 51:42SPEAKER_08: Well, that that's that's too bad.
- 51:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 51:44SPEAKER_08: Um, how about a nickname?
- 51:46SPEAKER_08: Do you have a nickname?
- 51:47SPEAKER_05: Um, not really.
- 51:48SPEAKER_05: My aunt calls me muffin, though.
- 51:50SPEAKER_05: Muffin?
- 51:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 51:50SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 51:51SPEAKER_08: Your teammates don't call you muffin.
- 51:54SPEAKER_08: I can't imagine.
- 51:55SPEAKER_08: That's not that would not be the best, you know, sport nickname necessarily.
- 52:00SPEAKER_08: Well, Hayden, best of luck this season.
- 52:02SPEAKER_08: Uh, not only for slow pitch, but for fast pitch.
- 52:06SPEAKER_08: Do you do anything in wintertime or um no most winter workouts with my travel team?
- 52:11SPEAKER_08: Gotcha.
- 52:12SPEAKER_08: Gotcha.
- 52:12SPEAKER_08: That's hidden cages, stuff like that.
- 52:14SPEAKER_08: Where do you go for a hit and cage around here?
- 52:17SPEAKER_05: We go to the Wenatchee baseball cage over there.
- 52:20SPEAKER_08: Oh, okay.
- 52:20SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 52:21SPEAKER_08: Uh at uh Rec Park.
- 52:23SPEAKER_08: Okay, gotcha.
