- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to UConn Football Coaches Show. On the radio,
- 0:02Speaker 1: Mike Crispino along with Jason Candle. It's off to Miami
- 0:06Speaker 1: of Ohio. You're going back home, coach. You're going back
- 0:08Speaker 1: in your neck of the woods here to play the
- 0:11Speaker 1: Red Hawks. They're going to be one and two. They
- 0:14Speaker 1: had a tough loss with Cincinnati. They've had a rough
- 0:16Speaker 1: go against Cincinnati over the last several years. And another
- 0:19Speaker 1: heartbreaker for them. I know you don't think about the
- 0:23Speaker 1: emotional state of the opposition, but to me, either they're
- 0:27Speaker 1: going to come out really angry or they're going to
- 0:29Speaker 1: be a little let down as to what happened to
- 0:31Speaker 1: them in that Cincinnati football game this last weekend.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Well, that's a major football game that means a lot
- 0:36Speaker 2: for both institutions and really that area of the state.
- 0:39Speaker 2: You know, Chuck Martin's an exceptional coach. He's done a
- 0:42Speaker 2: really good job there building that program, you know, for
- 0:45Speaker 2: the long haul. You know, he's got great sustainability there
- 0:48Speaker 2: and got a great staff and they're a tough team.
- 0:51Speaker 2: They're a tough out and they really controlled that football
- 0:53Speaker 2: game against Cincinnati Saturday for, you know, 46 and some
- 0:56Speaker 2: odd minutes. So, uh, yeah, I mean a tough way
- 0:59Speaker 2: to lose. And I think if you're in this for,
- 1:01Speaker 2: you know, long enough, you, you never rate your losses
- 1:04Speaker 2: or your, the adversities that come through your program, but
- 1:08Speaker 2: you get yourself in some of those. And, you know,
- 1:10Speaker 2: if I know Chuck, like I think I do, we'll
- 1:12Speaker 2: have this team ready to roll. They'll be in a
- 1:14Speaker 2: great mental state and we're going to have to go
- 1:16Speaker 2: play our very best. And the only way to do
- 1:18Speaker 2: that is have a great week of practice. So we've
- 1:21Speaker 2: got to be on it this week in prep. They don't,
- 1:22Speaker 2: like I said, they don't beat themselves. They're really good
- 1:24Speaker 2: in the kicking game, really sound on defense. They're getting
- 1:27Speaker 2: some good quarterback play, which has allowed them to be
- 1:29Speaker 2: you know, really good throwing the football and playing efficient offense. So, yeah,
- 1:34Speaker 2: a good team and a very, very good opponent on
- 1:36Speaker 2: the road. And, you know, got to go do our
- 1:38Speaker 2: best to win the game.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Yeah, defensively, they've been a top 40 team in the
- 1:42Speaker 1: country five straight years. Special teams last year, top 25.
- 1:45Speaker 1: You know, over the years, there have been some head
- 1:49Speaker 1: coaches who've had that special feeling about special teams. And
- 1:54Speaker 1: when you play against a team like that, There's always
- 1:57Speaker 1: some feeling like, what are they going to pull out
- 1:59Speaker 1: of their back pocket here? You know what I'm saying?
- 2:02Speaker 1: They really put the heat on you with what they
- 2:04Speaker 1: can do with special teams. Well, they're very sound.
- 2:07Speaker 2: We've played them four times in the last three years,
- 2:10Speaker 2: you know, when I was at Toledo and, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 2: each one of those games. And we were fortunate enough
- 2:15Speaker 2: to win three of them. But, you know, even the
- 2:17Speaker 2: one that we lost and the ones, even, you know,
- 2:20Speaker 2: all four of them, really, there was a major special
- 2:22Speaker 2: teams play in each game. You know, and if you
- 2:24Speaker 2: look at their game on Saturday, they returned the opening
- 2:26Speaker 2: kickoff for a touchdown. Good teams and good programs put
- 2:29Speaker 2: time and energy into that phase of the game, and
- 2:31Speaker 2: they do. And they've got a lot of players, young players,
- 2:33Speaker 2: that are very willing and eager to go contribute to
- 2:36Speaker 2: that part of the game, which makes them a good
- 2:39Speaker 2: team and ultimately a great program.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Yeah, the Red Hawks first all-time, and Mack wins 742,
- 2:43Speaker 1: I think it is, in playoffs. in conference wins too
- 2:47Speaker 1: 341 and they've been mac champs 17 times so they've
- 2:52Speaker 1: gone to a lot of bowl games i mean the
- 2:54Speaker 1: history of a program and you you did that at
- 2:56Speaker 1: toledo getting that winning thing going when you have that
- 3:00Speaker 1: and you and you're chuck martin and you're coaching miami
- 3:03Speaker 1: of ohio you get respect don't you wherever you play.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Well it's an expectation on campus that you're successful And
- 3:11Speaker 2: not only is it an expectation from the coaching staff
- 3:13Speaker 2: or the players or the training staff or the equipment staff,
- 3:15Speaker 2: whoever's in your football building, but when you walk down
- 3:18Speaker 2: the street on campus to go get a cup of coffee,
- 3:20Speaker 2: it's an expectation of the student body that you're successful.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And I think that, you know, that snowballs pretty quickly
- 3:26Speaker 2: and that creates an aura and creates a confidence that,
- 3:30Speaker 2: you know, is really hard to defeat. You know, you
- 3:33Speaker 2: see that here at UConn in our basketball programs, right?
- 3:36Speaker 2: I mean, there's, you know, the games that are equally matched.
- 3:40Speaker 2: you know, there's still a, there's still a, you can say, Hey,
- 3:43Speaker 2: you're not playing that particular team, but man, oh man,
- 3:46Speaker 2: you know, there's still the thought of some of these
- 3:48Speaker 2: big moments of, you know, Ray Allen and some of
- 3:51Speaker 2: these other players that have come through these, this, these,
- 3:52Speaker 2: this place that there's tradition rich, you know, history here
- 3:56Speaker 2: and there's a history of success. So when you're able
- 3:59Speaker 2: to create that, like Miami has been able to create, yeah.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I mean, it, it doesn't help win today's game, but
- 4:04Speaker 2: it certainly allows those players there to bounce back off
- 4:06Speaker 2: the mat from a very tough loss that they had Saturday. And,
- 4:10Speaker 2: As I said before, I expect the best foot forward
- 4:12Speaker 2: by this program and this team, and we've got to
- 4:14Speaker 2: be at our best to match that energy and that intensity.
- 4:17Speaker 1: This is a team that's got– we're talking about Miami,
- 4:19Speaker 1: Ohio here, a couple minutes left with Jason Candle, 27 transfers,
- 4:22Speaker 1: 28 freshmen, young team. Their quarterback, David McComb, threw for 334,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and he ran for a touchdown last week. Coach, as
- 4:32Speaker 1: you look at him on tape, what are you thinking?
- 4:34Speaker 1: What do you think his strengths are?
- 4:37Speaker 2: Well, I think that he gets better every start. And
- 4:40Speaker 2: I think that they have a vision and a plan
- 4:43Speaker 2: for what that looks like. And they put him in
- 4:46Speaker 2: position during the games where he can be successful. He's
- 4:49Speaker 2: been able to create, you know, some success through the system.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And then he's been able to create some success because
- 4:54Speaker 2: of his, you know, comfort in that system where maybe
- 4:57Speaker 2: the first option isn't there. He's got to go to
- 4:59Speaker 2: two or three and he's able to make the throws
- 5:01Speaker 2: to where it needs to go. So, um yeah we
- 5:05Speaker 2: got to do a good job of affecting him and
- 5:07Speaker 2: it doesn't matter who he is each and every week
- 5:09Speaker 2: you know you got to be able to move the
- 5:10Speaker 2: quarterback off the spot and do a good job with
- 5:12Speaker 2: that so you can get some of those disruptive plays
- 5:15Speaker 2: those havoc plays that everybody's striving for.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And quick final thought scoop smith is a wide receiver
- 5:20Speaker 1: he ran one back 98 yards for a touchdown last
- 5:24Speaker 1: week i'm just thinking out loud here you're not kicking
- 5:27Speaker 1: it to him are you.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Well Sometimes the elements of the game, there's a win factor.
- 5:37Speaker 2: You don't want to kick it to them, but if
- 5:39Speaker 2: you do and it happens there, you got to go
- 5:40Speaker 2: get them on the ground. You got to tackle them.
- 5:43Speaker 2: It's not about one guy being able to make 11
- 5:45Speaker 2: guys miss. It's about you being able to make sure
- 5:48Speaker 2: that you You know, when you're in the fly zone
- 5:50Speaker 2: on a kickoff that you take the proper angle and
- 5:53Speaker 2: you take the proper leverage. When you're in the strike
- 5:54Speaker 2: zone that you do a great job of two gap
- 5:56Speaker 2: and the guy that's trying to block you and you
- 5:57Speaker 2: disengage and shed blocks and get the guy on the ground.
- 6:00Speaker 2: You have to be better fundamentally. If not, a good
- 6:02Speaker 2: returner becomes a great one in a hurry.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Yeah, Scoop Smith, one of the great nicknames. Billy White
- 6:07Speaker 1: Shoes Johnson and Scoop Smith. Those are my all-timers. Do
- 6:10Speaker 1: you have one? Do you have an all-time nickname? I don't.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I don't. All right. Well, put that under your hat
- 6:17Speaker 1: and maybe next week we can come up with one.
- 6:19Speaker 1: All right. Thanks to Jason Candley. Great, great start, 2-1.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Good luck this week. We'll be with you. And Huskies
- 6:26Speaker 1: take on Miami of Ohio, 2 o'clock, pregame, 3.30 kickoff.
