- 0:07Hey, welcome on in everybody here to the
- 0:08postgame pod at Auburn Undercover.
- 0:10Nathan King here joined by Patrick
- 0:12Bingham here under Bridgestone Arena. A
- 0:15couple hours removed here from the
- 0:17Auburn Tigers opening round win over
- 0:20Mississippi State to 61. This was a game
- 0:23of course Patrick the Tigers absolutely
- 0:25had to have. Um but it was one that got
- 0:28a little shaky. Auburn was down by 10 uh
- 0:30just a few minutes before halftime, but
- 0:32I think the energy, I don't know if you
- 0:34really noticed this, like not getting
- 0:36spooked by that and and everybody
- 0:38staying very engaged at that point. Um
- 0:40and obviously the immediate response
- 0:41Auburn had um is is probably the reason
- 0:44why they're still playing because it
- 0:46opened the door to a a second half where
- 0:48really Auburn just rolled after halftime
- 0:49and was the much better team.
- 0:51>> Yeah, we talk about like the middle
- 0:52eight in football. I don't know how that
- 0:54would math out the basketball, but it
- 0:55really was like that middle right before
- 0:57halftime, right after halftime for
- 0:59Auburn. Um, of course, Mississippi State
- 1:01coming out of the half did bang a few
- 1:03shots in, but then Auburn immediately
- 1:05kind of eliminated everything they just
- 1:06did and then just took off from there. I
- 1:08think that's what Chris Jan said in his
- 1:10postgame. He thought the turning point
- 1:11was was going right into the locker
- 1:13room. Auburn being able to make that run
- 1:15um and not let like Josh Hubard or the
- 1:18um Bulldogs make a shot going into the
- 1:20half.
- 1:21Yeah, it was a 70 run for them right
- 1:23before halftime. 70 run for Auburn. You
- 1:25can extend that out a lot into the
- 1:27second half. It was a 21-2 run for
- 1:29Auburn um after halftime and that sort
- 1:31of gave them the lead and look they they
- 1:33were in a very similar position as
- 1:35compared to the end of the Mississippi
- 1:36State game the first time around.
- 1:37Remember that game they were up by seven
- 1:38with four minutes left. This game they
- 1:40were up by eight with four minutes left,
- 1:41but this time they were able to hang on
- 1:42to it. Uh Kevin Overton was so crucial
- 1:45in this game for it just felt like
- 1:46anytime Mississippi State had any
- 1:48semblance of life to maybe get back into
- 1:50it. He just kept pushing Auburn ahead.
- 1:51He makes six three-pointers in this
- 1:52game. I believe five of them came um in
- 1:54the second half and then Keshan Murphy
- 1:56against his former team. This this had
- 1:58to be sweet um for him. Of course it
- 2:00was. He talked about, you know, how big
- 2:02how big of a game this was. And it was a
- 2:04it was a wide range of emotions for him
- 2:06because he scores first seven points of
- 2:08the game, but then picks up two very
- 2:10silly fouls. only plays 5 minutes there
- 2:12in the first half, but he was extremely
- 2:14impactful for them. In the second half,
- 2:15Mississippi State really didn't have
- 2:16anybody that could hang with him on the
- 2:17inside.
- 2:18>> That's the thing. Walking into the
- 2:19locker room, they were still kind of
- 2:20talking amongst each others and um Ira
- 2:22Bowman had was talking to Keshan Murphy
- 2:24who was like right by the entrance and
- 2:25he was like, "Dude, you were about to go
- 2:27crazy and then you had that technical
- 2:29foul and I think that was kind of the
- 2:31feeling."
- 2:32>> That's right. You know, 83 from Keshan
- 2:34Murphy. But um I I think that's the
- 2:37thing is that you really saw it when he
- 2:39was out in that first half how
- 2:40Mississippi State was able to take
- 2:41advantage. They were dominating the
- 2:43rebounds. They were dominating the
- 2:44points in the paint. He comes in against
- 2:46his former team in the second half and
- 2:48provides just a big difference for
- 2:49Auburn.
- 2:50>> I believe Mississippi State was plus 12
- 2:51on the boards at halftime. Um and that
- 2:53that flipped dramatically. I mean look
- 2:55no further than the fact that the box
- 2:57score is insane. I mean only 21 minutes
- 2:58for Keshan Murphy but he's a plus 28 in
- 3:01the game. And then on the flip side,
- 3:03Philip Yoic is is minus 13 in this game.
- 3:05So that really showed the difference
- 3:06between those guys on the interior. Um
- 3:08and Steve Pearl talked about, you know,
- 3:09Todd Pedford played a good second half.
- 3:11I mean, really, it was it was kind of an
- 3:12all-around effort in this one. Really
- 3:13the only one I don't remember having a
- 3:15lot of impact other than that three down
- 3:17the stretch. I'll take that back cuz
- 3:19Keshan Hall hit a big three there when
- 3:20they had a four-on-one fast break. Uh
- 3:22Blake Mollik had I thought some of his
- 3:23best minutes in the first half of SEC
- 3:25play. It's the most points he scored in
- 3:27in two months. Um really good defensive
- 3:29work against Josh Hubard. a lot of his
- 3:30teammates credit him for that. But, uh,
- 3:32Patrick, in in less than 24 hours from
- 3:34this, um, it kind of all comes down to
- 3:36this one. Now, this was, when you looked
- 3:38at, you know, the runway for Auburn here
- 3:40in Nashville, this was the you cannot
- 3:43lose this or we will stop talking about
- 3:44you entirely. Like, this is like you
- 3:46have to have this one. You have to make
- 3:47amends for the loss earlier and you
- 3:48can't lose another, you know, quad 2
- 3:50game. They did that. now they are on,
- 3:53you know, maybe even playing ground with
- 3:55some other teams in the bubble of you
- 3:57need to go get a big win and they have
- 3:59that opportunity set out in front of
- 4:00them. It's Tennessee tomorrow
- 4:02approximately 2:00 Central time
- 4:03depending on when the first game ends um
- 4:06against the Volunteers. It's a game that
- 4:07they lost in Knoxville. It was actually
- 4:09a pretty close game um throughout that
- 4:11that Auburn was competitive in and I
- 4:13mean it really does just come down to
- 4:15this one and Patrick and and and you
- 4:16know some guys talk in the locker room
- 4:17about you know this is this is a team
- 4:19that already had you know has a good
- 4:21resume has some quality wins um this
- 4:23season but has known they they've taken
- 4:26way too many losses of late and now they
- 4:28have an opportunity to to get one back.
- 4:29>> Yeah. And they said that in words I
- 4:31won't say on here, but um yeah, I think
- 4:33that's the thing is it almost just
- 4:34mirrors for me what we just did this
- 4:36past week of like LSU was the you have
- 4:38to win this or we're done. Alabama is
- 4:41your chance to go put yourself Yeah. to
- 4:44go to the tournament. Same thing again.
- 4:46Um and I I Yeah, it just it kind of all
- 4:48comes down to tomorrow. We've seen a lot
- 4:50of other bubble teams lose in their
- 4:52conference tournaments and lose early or
- 4:53to bad opponents, but this is your this
- 4:56is how you kind of make amends for that
- 4:58quad 3 miss and you can get the quad one
- 5:00here. There's just like so many
- 5:02different levels of like how important
- 5:04>> tomorrow is for the future of Auburn
- 5:06season.
- 5:06>> Yeah, I mean it's it's it's it feels
- 5:07like it's it. I mean maybe there is an
- 5:09opportunity. I personally don't think
- 5:11nobody nobody really thinks that Auburn
- 5:13would be
- 5:13>> and they're certainly not operating that
- 5:15way mentally,
- 5:15>> right? And Auburn definitely is. I mean,
- 5:17they they they can stand up there and
- 5:18talk about like Steam Pearl did after
- 5:19the Alabama game like some players
- 5:20today. They can talk about how hard
- 5:22their schedule has been and how many
- 5:23good wins they have, but they know that
- 5:24they got to go get one tomorrow. Um and
- 5:26and and really, I mean, it it was a good
- 5:28start. It was it was not like this game,
- 5:30you know, they looked rocky. Like they
- 5:32had some things they worked through,
- 5:33ended up getting a double digit margin
- 5:34of victory. I thought that second half
- 5:35was
- 5:36>> one of the best halves of basketball.
- 5:38>> Didn't they win the half by almost 20
- 5:39points or was it Mississippi State? And
- 5:41Steam Pearl said after the game, this
- 5:42was the best defense they've played in a
- 5:43long time. Now Tennessee is a different
- 5:45animal. It's a front court matchup now
- 5:47as opposed to, you know, obviously this
- 5:48game was all about limiting Josh Hubard
- 5:49whose name we have not really even
- 5:50talked about on this and that's really
- 5:52good that we didn't um he gets his
- 5:54points and he scored 22 but goes two of
- 5:56eight from three and it's like and steam
- 5:57pro after the game he's like you know
- 5:58when he doesn't have eight more threes
- 6:00than that it it becomes a lot easier to
- 6:02win a basketball game
- 6:03>> tomorrow against Tennessee's front court
- 6:04you know that's a game that you lost
- 6:05that first match up you lost the
- 6:07rebounding battle by 16 in that one and
- 6:09so guys like Keshan Murphy who had a
- 6:10good game today Elish Freeman had 10
- 6:11rebounds today they've got to go out
- 6:13there and do it and Steve Pearl said
- 6:14after the game you that's going test
- 6:15their manhood. It's going to test their
- 6:16toughness. It's one they've got to have
- 6:17a different level of toughness. And
- 6:19obviously, they've got to have that if
- 6:20they want to go dancing and they want to
- 6:22go to March Madness. So,
- 6:23>> we shall see. We will be here in uh in
- 6:25back in Bridgestone Arena at auburn
- 6:27undercover.com for the Tigers and the
- 6:29number five seed volunteers for Patrick
- 6:31Bingham. I'm Nathan King. Head over to
- 6:32auburnover.com. We're going to continue
- 6:34to have coverage of this one. Um good
- 6:35stuff from from Patrick's videos in the
- 6:37locker room and obviously getting to
- 6:38talk to everybody here today and we'll
- 6:40roll right on into the game against
- 6:42Tennessee tomorrow. So, we'll see you
- 6:43guys over at auburn undercover.com.
