Speaking of which, Matt, how are we doing this week? How are we doing on this fine episode 31? I'm doing swell, man. Doing swell. day. Good round the golf. Good to me. ⁓ not good to some others. Hopefully everyone's having a, I guess this episode's dropping Wednesday, but we're recording this on May the 4th. So may the force be with you. And the be with you. But it's a little bit, it'll be a little bit later, so. Star Wars character? What? Favorite Star Wars character? You seen it? Yes, I've seen Star Wars. I watched it during the pandemic. If I had to choose somebody. It'd be top two. Anakin before he turned to Darth Vader after you know once he turned our fader wasn't really the good guy anymore well She could be a favorite and then Probably Yoda ⁓ Because then also with the Mandalorian the baby Yoda, which I don't believe those are the same I don't know too much of the Star Wars Lord the same lineage Right. He's not like Yoda's grandson basis. He's the same like Species. Animal is Yoda? Yeah. Species animal. Listen, we're a sports podcast. What about you, Matt? Who's your favorite too? I just feel like I have to go to Darth Vader. Just fan favorite. Little bit of dark side. One of the best villains all time. Ooh, all time villain. Definitely. And I will say he did steal my, I love Yoda. Just the way he talks. Yes. And his fight scene against Darth. Darth Palpatine, Darth Sidious, Emperor Palpatine, Darth Sidious. Which one was that? that in the... Let me get technical. Which episode was that? Trying to think of Third one. Third one. I do believe. So it was like the... Mace Window out the window. Was that part of the 70s version of it? 80s? No. So that was episode four. was the 70s. Yeah, the... Yeah, because it came out four or five seconds, and then one, two, three, the third one came out and like... 2000s. Well, whoever's still here after that conversation of our riveting star wars. Welcome to the Brody pod Matt, let's go ahead and get into our birdies the week We have some great sports stories coming up But also there was some game sevens that went on we're in the conference semi finals for the NBA playoffs and Just some other things around the sports world. We'll start off with Brody's the week Matt Maybe I should lead it off. I think you're gonna say even well, you're speeding well to the NBA Not give it away. Yeah. You might be able to to start this one off. Starting off, we're to start off with one of my favorite colleges, Texas Tech. Najari Kennedy pitched her first perfect game for the Texas Tech softball Lady Raiders on Saturday against Baylor. She also did this on senior day and it was the last game of the regular season for the Lady Raiders. It took her only 63 pitches. Did 44 strikes and had nine strikeouts. Texas Tech won on a run rule eight zero in the fifth inning. ⁓ And Texas Tech is currently ranked number four in the country. Texas Tech will now start the postseason journey to the college world series, starting with the big 12 tournament coming up May 7th, actually the day after this podcast comes out. So Thursday, right? Yeah. And they will also play Baylor again, who they, just had the perfect game again. looking really good for the lady Raiders. saw that, ⁓ saw a tweet saying that she needed the perfect game to complete like her accomplishments. This is like the one big accomplishment that she was missing. Right. This was like her last chance to do it. And she did it. was senior night last regular season game of her career. So perfect, know, perfect game to do it, guess. I will say I was watching this game as it was going on. I didn't realize I was watching a perfect game because I did turn it on late, but I just saw, you you want to talk about some of the impacts these athletes have on their college, especially with the NIL era that we're in. I used to work for Texas Tech Softball or just Texas Tech Athletics in general. And I used to go to the softball games. was working them. And then I saw on TV all the upgrades that they've done to the stadium since I've been there. Like they now have like covered seating. have like, they have, they have seats in the outfield now. Like there was a sold out crowd. was like 2,900 people. They were there at the stadium. It's just crazy to see like the impact. Like when I was there, you know, they were good, but they weren't like a, a ⁓ national powerhouse like they are right now. And just to see like all the money that she's been able to bring into that program and be able to lift up like the next generations of Texas tech softball girls that come through there. It's just really cool to see. And honestly, like Texas tech, they're ranked four in the country, possibly be, could be moving up, going to be hosting a regional, probably a super regional. And then go into the college world series, like this, they could even elevate even more. So it's just really cool to see. And once again, with the NIL stuff and everything, everyone's talking about all the bad stuff that it brings. It's also bringing a lot of good things to these programs. So happy to see that for her. And shout out to her for staying at Tech. She probably got a lot of other NIL offers to go to other, know, softball programs, different colleges. Shout out to her for staying there and developing that program. Yeah. mean, she did start off at Stanford and then transferred to but the fact that last year she could have left and stayed with Tech is very cool. Also, I forgot to mention this one with just the little bit of accolades from this game. Texas Tech also won the regular season Big 12 championship. So, you know, best team in the conference. This is their first time, I believe, that they went back to back in the program history. So just all around, they were just, it was a great day in Lubbock on Saturday. Getting into my next Brody of the Week. And this one isn't really a person, it's a horse. Golden Tempo is the Kentucky Derby champion and was all the way in the back to start this race and then came back in a historic fashion and was able to pull off the win. Ended up beating the, one of the horses that was the favorite, Renegade, in the final stretch. But just to be all the way back and then to come back and win. ⁓ Golden Tempo was also a 23 to one odds to win the Kentucky Derby. This was the 152nd Kentucky Derby. Golden Tempo is also a descendant of Secretariat. Like who's Secretariat? One of the best horse racing horses of all time. Yeah, there's five generations back. And actually 17 of the 18 horses that race in the Kentucky Derby this year are all descendants of Secretariat. So the genes run big and the Secretariat. And that's a way saying it. I will say, know, I know zero, probably less than zero about horse racing and stuff, but I know a secretariat. Yeah. Everyone knows. I that he slash she was it, I guess it a dog was a horse was very good. I don't know what, I guess when they, when it's just 17 of 18, like a lot of descendants, like, I mean, was it, it's gotta be a female horse. Yeah. Yeah. To be able to birth the- No, no, no. Became the only horses after they win the Kentucky Derby, they then go to a farm and become studs. I haven't seen them 18s, Chris. I want to the 18th horse. Who's the one horse without the So there's also, I don't know if this is the horse or not, but I know there's like a couple, like horse racing has become very big in Japan and they've been trying to get a winner at the Kentucky Derby. I believe maybe the 18th horse might come from that. Overall Golden Tempo, there's a big storyline that came out of this. Sherri DeVoe, who was the trainer for Golden Tempo, becomes the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby. She spent the decade, the previous decade working ⁓ as a horse racing assistant, learning from some of the top trainers before starting her own barn in 2018. And since then her horses have won her more than $33 million. So absolutely historic day there. What do you guys want to say? Well, I was going to say, how is this the first, how is she the first woman? ⁓ I guess, well you say trainer. She's not the one like riding the horse. No, she's not the jockey. Okay. She's the one that makes sure the horse is like on the right diet, doing the right running. Right. Okay. So that was my confusion because I guess they're all guys that all the jockeys are. Yeah. And, and jockeys are only like descendants of other jockey. Like normally that's like a family business. Like there was a, don't want to get too much into it, but Jose Ortiz, who was the jockey for Golden Tempo. ⁓ also his brother was racing and they were on the final stretch battling back and forth. And he, ⁓ Jose Ortiz is also now the ninth jockey to win the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby in the same year. So shout out to the jockey, shout out to the trainer, shout out to Golden Tempo. Honestly, the 152nd Kentucky Derby I thought was just, I watched it. I didn't realize it was the first weekend of May again. Like it just kind of snuck up on me a little bit, but you know, when it's on, I throw it on and leave it on. The Derby did average 19.6 million viewers, which is the most on a record. And, you know, if you follow any of us, if you follow Brody pod on any of the social media, I may have put out there that commandment was the horse that Brody pod was, you know, riding with who we were choosing. It was also turned out to be the co-favorite. Did not know that, just thought the name was cool and the horse was cool. Finished in seventh. So hopefully no one placed any money on our, on our horse to win. Because that was really just a blind shot in the dark. And honestly, next year, I'm just going to do a will spin and that's going to be our horse that we're riding with. Cause it seems like the last couple of years, it hasn't been the favorite to win. I think we don't keep up with, hand up accountability. Don't keep up with horse racing enough to know who's really going to win it. There was a cool storyline that came out of this or not. It's not a cool storyline, but there was this horse called the great white and It was just like every time it came on the announcers were just like this horse is massive It's the biggest horse we've seen ever in the Kentucky Derby basically like calling the horse fat I Didn't think that was very nice for them to do for the horse But right before the horses go into the gate the horse like freaks out right and it just like goes up on its high legs and flips over and lands on the jockey luckily Everyone was okay. ⁓ but the great white, didn't get to see him run. was really excited to see like that big horse run. ⁓ but they had to like take them away because they have to do like medical evaluations, make sure the horse is, know, okay. They can't do it quick enough. Cause it was literally right as they were trying to load them all up in the gates. ⁓ just crazy to see that happen, especially like they did a replay of it. I was like, of course, like the biggest horse falling on like the smallest jockey. hate to see that. What's he like fat or like. Was he just like, no, think he's just big long legged, long legged. They would like show him compared to the other horses and he's just like double the size of them. But now all these horses are normally like three years old. They're all like around the same age. just like was, he's just a big horse, dude. I don't know about horse racing, but I assume that's not ideal. Yeah. jockeys are small people in what smaller people. Right. You when you carry as much weight. Right. Exactly. So I assume like a, you know, bigger horse might not run as fast, he's more mature. he, you know, I don't know. It's almost like human beings, right? Like the bigger a human is when they're running, they're going to use more oxygen, their muscles get fatigued faster. Like there's a certain like balance, right? Of like speed and power. And I think great white was a lot more power than speed. But I mean, to get to the Kentucky Derby, they, all these horses have to qualify from either around the world or around the, around the nation. So he was fast enough to get to the Kentucky Derby. I wanted to see him run so bad just because, you know, those horses start bumping on it. Anyone that bumped into great white was probably going to get, you know, tossed a little bit. So that is an advantage. Yeah. Yeah. Cause they might've been the Japanese horse. Yeah. So it was supposed to be like 19 or actually it was supposed to be 20 horses racing, but two of them were scratches. So. unfortunate there. I never watched it. it one lap around the... It's one lap. It's about a mile. Actually, I think it's exactly a mile around. It's the longest. do know a little bit about the Kentucky Derby just because I watched every year. Apparently. But it's the longest track that they race on. So like all the qualifying and stuff isn't as long of a track as the Kentucky Derby. ⁓ Also, the weather was a little bit cooler and I found out I was listening to a podcast. ⁓ Pardon my take. had a horse racing expert on his name is Randy Moss. They were talking about the temperature. Yeah. Not, not the football. Randy Moss. guy's strictly horse racing. he was talking about the temperature, like the optimal temperature for a horse to race in is 46 degrees. And that's about what it was. Fahrenheit. Yeah. Fahrenheit. Yes. What is the, is that in Tennessee or? The Kentucky Derby? Yeah. It's in Kentucky. You get that out. Another fun thing that comes out of this and some of the people probably like this more than, than I care to keep up with, but everyone loves all the hats and the fancy suits and all the celebrities that show up to the Kentucky Derby. ⁓ it's just some, you see some crazy stuff on people's heads or some of the crazy suit color aspect of it, but I I'm more there for the horse racing. And they were like such old school. Kind of clothing. Yeah, it's very classy. Like 1900s, like early, late to mid-90s. It's like classy with some flair. Dresses and suits. Yeah. Got to put your spin on it. Yeah. Honestly, Matt, we could go, I saw like the general admission tickets are like $130 and then like you get like a suite or something. I think the suites like on the finish line are like 400 grand. So obviously we wouldn't do that, but, uh, twin spires, Kentucky Derby. We're happy to come out and do a podcast next year. Yeah. I'd have to get paid to go to that, but I do need to say, have set a reminder. We are going to do a will spin next year when the Kentucky devil comes up and we'll tell you what horse we're rocking with. Actually, I did see that you tweeted that you wanted to Mammoth. was your favorite. And I, I respected that because I love the name also. I think a lot of them have, there's a show, all the horses have unique names. Even like golden tempo. that's kind of bad ass. Yeah. We see, I think I had other names that was funny. Status quo. Status quo was one and litmus test. Yeah. Renegade, wonder Dean and credit bolt. thought was a great name. Chief wallaby was another great one. ⁓ and then six speed just cause like, kind of like car. Absolutely. That's sick. Yeah. Great, great job of gold tempo. Unfortunately, our horse didn't win, but you know, that's the fun thing about the Kentucky Debris is pick a horse and then you're riding with them. almost said the ginger, the horse. that matter? I don't think that matters. I think there's really the main thing that matters is that they're around three years old. Like there is a restriction that the horse has, can't be older than three years. Those are my brothers of the week. Matt, let's get into your brothers of week. First bird is Scotty Scheffler. And the reason he is here is a little niche. ⁓ I know he just finished second in the Cadillac championship, but a few days prior, he was out at Preston trail country club in Dallas. ⁓ out there playing with, I assume some other PGA fellas, maybe his friends. ⁓ but regardless, he shot. 60 and set the course record out at Pression Trail, which I find kind of insulting Was not only does he set a course record of 60 He goes and finishes second the Cadillac championship with 13 under It's just it's I understand. It's got a Schaeffler best golfer in the world You know arguably with Rory but It's just kind of shows you this. mean Preston Trail is in obviously on the PGA list of courses that they play. It's just, you know, it's a country club, just a regular old country club. He goes out there, sets the course record and he goes and it's his second in a PGA tournament. Yeah. And we've kind of talked about him the last couple of weeks. He's been finishing second. Yeah. In a couple of tournaments. Like this is like his third tournament in a row finishing second. finished second at the masters and then what was the one RBC, RBC heritage. And then now the Cadillac championship. So I they should just play at Preston trail. They just play at Preston trail. Didn't he, was he playing out there with like Spieth and someone else from Dallas? I thought that, I thought I heard about this on the broadcast. They brought it up. I thought he was playing with some other professional. It might've been Jordan Spieth and someone else. It was, it was also like a Dallas guy. Siwoo Kim. Maybe. Maybe. ⁓ I think that, rings a bell, but he was there with some other BGA pros as well. Just imagine shooting 60 at a golf course. would love to see what a scorecard look like, like all the birdies or Eagles that he had, like if there was any bogeys, like obviously I think 60 might be bogey free, but just imagine, like put yourself in the shoes. Like you just go out there with the boys and then you just go out there and shoot 60. Yeah. I mean, I would act, I would switch up so fast if I shot 60. You wouldn't know me anymore. Yeah. Wouldn't speak to me. I'd be like, well, know, course. mean, I mean, the course isn't like notoriously hard, to be back tees. What do think? I think he played from the back tees. I think he played from the women's. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, setting the course record and then just going on to play a PGA tournament event. That's just unbelievable. Yeah. Speaking to the Cadillac championship, did you see a Cam Young call the penalty on himself? He did win the Cadillac championship and on the second hole he did. now someone brought up a good thing in the comments. were like, would he have called that penalty on himself if he wasn't leading by five strokes? I'd like to believe that he would. Yeah. I don't see why wouldn't. Well, if he was leading by a stroke and I get a penalty, that could easily, you know, go back and, but he did. It's not like he was the only one that saw that. No, but even Scotty was like playing with them and Scott was like, dude, I don't think unless you like, he was like trying to talk them out of it. Like, I think you're fine. I don't think this should count as a penalty. And he's like, no, I touched it. I grounded my club and the ball rolled forward. Now mad respect to Cam Young, who did that, got the penalty stroke and still finished with the par on the hole and an absolute rate, I guess, third shot from where he was and landed it and made the putt and made it for par. So was pretty much no harm done, but. ⁓ you know, good karma coming for Kim, you know, good, good guy award and shout out for Scotty for being like, Hey man, don't take the penalty. Like that's what I would do for my wife. Like, you know, you're fine. He's insisted on it. Who's the, ⁓ the guy that was in the bunker and he was like, his takeaways for moving the sand away from his ball. ⁓ Patrick Reed. Yeah. ⁓ yeah. He has like that famous clip of him. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Complete opposite of that guy, I guess. Tough one. There's different guys in the tour. Different guys. I just wanted to bring that up. I didn't know where I was gonna fit that in. I was glad you were talking about Scottie Shuffler. I think it was his second one on the tour. All right, Matt, and your second Brody. Second Brody is Mr. Cade Cunningham. The reason he is here is a little less niche than last one. Hold on. Are you saying Cade is more known than Scottie Shuffler? No, I'm just saying that The reason he is here is, cause I don't think a lot of people are going to know that he broke the course record at Preston Terrell. ⁓ okay. I was saying like, if you put it like, we did like a vote on Twitter, who's more known, Kate Cunningham or Scottie Scheffler. That actually might be a good, I don't know. That actually might be a very good poll. Yeah. We might get that going on the Twitter. I'm gonna put that out tonight. Go and vote on the Twitter at Brody pod. Shout out Kate Cunningham. Anyways. him and the pistons just won game seven against the Orlando Magic. He dropped 32 points and 12 assists in a closeout game. Scored 10 of 19 from the field, four of six from three. Incredibly efficient, very dominant. He kind of was dominant the entire series. Just, guess the magic kind of just didn't have it that night. ⁓ I guess last night, but I'll tell you who did have it. Palo Bencaro dropped 38 points, nine rebounds and sixth assists in a game seven, which is honestly should be a, you know, winning scoring line. Like he probably shouldn't have won with that, with that line, but unfortunately he was playing the Pistons. ⁓ I'm glad you bring this up because I wanted to talk about the game sevens. I was going to touch on a little bit with the NBA, but, ⁓ you bring it up right now in Kate Cunningham and his performance. So I saw that history repeated itself with this series, like between 2026, between the Pistons and Magic and 2003, the game won through seven. All the winners were the exact same. The Magic had a three, one lead and also blew that crazy stat. I'll put the graphic up, but it's it's crazy. History repeats itself. think the, the home game or the home team won every game in this series. Maybe not the. That's the last three. Cause game five and seven would have been at Detroit. And they won the, they won three in a row. Yeah. It's been a couple of I mean, yeah, it's been, it's been a while. mean, are right. Cade Cunningham absolutely balled out. I believe it was like the last three games that they were like facing elimination. Cade Cunningham showed up in this series and you almost tried to jinx him multiple times. No, I listen, I I had both of them as my brody's. Exactly. The pistons and the magic. So it evens out. First of all, second of all, it shouldn't even gone to three and one. That's because you chose, you just sort of swept them. That's because you chose the pistons as your initial Brody before the season started or before the series started. And then the magic won three and they were about to win it. And then you made the magic your Brody and then the pistons went one three. So if anyone is out there, you know, keeping score at home on who you should bet on. Who do the Pistons play now? They have the Cavs. You should bet the Cavs in this next series. It's going to be a shit show, dude, because both of them should have lost. I'd say that right now. I'm sure Magic fans are happy that Orlando lost because they're not going to go far in the playoffs anyways. They just fired the coach, DeMama-Losley. The Magic fired their coach? As of today, yeah. Breaking news. Breaking news. Didn't know that. They probably knew that, but, news, fire their head coach. ⁓ yeah, the meds, you just gotta, they got to retool. They gotta do something. know they, they, they were on the verge of ⁓ incredible upset against the one seed, but. Especially as a playing team. Yeah, they're not, they weren't going to go far anyways. They got to, they got to do some. It seems like they had some guys maybe. It seems like they have kind of the right pieces and there's just a little bit of retooling. I don't know about firing the coach that is, that seems like they're a complete rebuild almost. But I mean like with Paolo and everyone else they have, know, it's. Franz Fogner, Desmond Bain. Yeah. I mean, it's like they the right pieces. They just need to get like something else to get over the hump. Which would be a good coach. Yeah. So I agree with the firing. Although they did have a lot of injuries. Absolutely. I know they had a lot of injuries during the season, Frans was out for a while, but. I guess he 3-1, you kind of have to. Yeah, before the season even started, like I think I said this last podcast, they had very high hopes and they were supposed to be a very, very good team. And they, they showed that they can compete with the number one seed. So. Oh, I just cut out for a little bit. I don't, I didn't hear what you last said, but I'm, know, good job, man. Thank you. It's great podcasting. Next year. They got it. Speaking of just some other game sevens here that went on, guess we can just kind of lead into this before we get into the NBA round two playoff talk. But Boston blew and also a 3-1 lead to Philadelphia 76ers. They lost 109-100 in the game seven. Jason Tatum was a late scratch in that game. And it is the first time that Philadelphia has beat Boston in a playoff series since 1982. So 76ers are looking up and up. is also the first time in NBA postseason history that there were multiple three, one comebacks in any single playoff round. So kind of delivered, you know, I, know, everyone always talks about NBA versus NHL playoffs. think there was one game seven in the NHL in the first round and in the NBA there was two or three. Yeah. shout out to Jaylen Brown. Had a hell of a game. without his counterpart and Jason Tatum. I mean, he was not the best down the stretch in the fourth quarter, but it's hard to go against a fully healthy sixers team. He did, uh, he did go on Twitch the next day and was talking about, I saw the clips of him saying Joel Embiid is a problem. Jalen Brown, maybe not the best thing to do to stream right after a playoff series loss, but he did say like, You know, I've been streaming after losses and wins all seasons, so I'm not going to change. he wasn't ducking the smoke. So. Respect to him just probably wasn't the best PR optics on it. He did like have his, ⁓ is like back wrapped in one of those like backwarming things. So yeah, he kind of went through some of the game tape as well from the game. So, mean, he could do that. He's a former conference finals MVP and finals MVP. So he can say what he wants. Just probably wasn't the best after a three one. Like it would have been different if they just like lost in like a game six or something, but losing a game seven after blowing a three one lead, probably give it a day. But you know what? Do what you got to do. what you got to team for the, uh, the Sixers play, the Knicks, right? Yeah. Sixers are playing the Knicks now, which we're going to get into that in a little bit. Uh, and then the other game seven from the weekend, Cleveland beat Toronto 114-102. Shout out USA, man. the fans were chanting USA, USA and, ⁓ and Cleveland, Ohio. And, ⁓ at the end of the game, as Cleveland was winning, they did play not like us at the end. And, ⁓ it's kind of a shot at Drake because his team is Toronto. He says he's from Toronto and, ⁓ just thought that was interesting. They made sure they had the game one before they pulled that one out. Did shout out rookie, ⁓ Colin Murray Boyles, the Raptors. What a fantastic season he had. Who? Colin Murray Boyles. Colin Murray Boyles. That is a fully right there. Colin Murray stash Boyles. Colin Murray. Of the Raptors. Off the bench. Fantastic. Fantastic all season, but even more so in the playoffs. He helped them take the Raptors to a game seven against a very coveted, ⁓ Cavaliers team. who a lot of people thought they were going to come out of the East. They still could, but going to game seven, the first round, maybe not the best look. Kind of tough road to having them. And speaking of which, I guess we can get into the round two matchups, Matt, the conference semi-finals. You want to start in the West or the East? Let's do West. Let's do West first. Okay. Starting off, we have the. Lakers taking on the Thunder, basically LeBron versus the new age basketball team in the Thunder with Shea and Chet and, ⁓ JDub, all those guys coming at him. And there is no Luka for this series. So once again, it's all on LeBron shoulders. Matt, have an, what do you feel about this series? Well, the, ⁓ the Oklahoma, Oklahoma city Thunder stopper is not going to be available apparently in Luka Donchich. So it's going to be, you know, LeBron and hopefully a fully healthy Austin Reeves, which he didn't look that great in the last game against the Rockets, but hopefully he turns it up because LeBron will need to help obviously against the, the title favorite and the Thunder. ⁓ I did see game one coming up tomorrow. So by the time this podcast comes out, we'll already know the answer to game one. It's going to be an OKC. ⁓ but you know, LeBron's ready, probably can handle it. The Thunder are a 15 point favorite in the game, so not looking, it's the highest spread of any of the playoff series. So it is kind of David versus Goliath, but at least like LeBron's on the other team, probably has a David Hopefully LeBron has a slingshot, man. Yeah, hopefully has a slingshot. I did see with his win against the Houston Rockets, that series, LeBron is now up to 42 playoff series wins. He has more than 24 other NBA franchises all time. So out of all of them, LeBron is in seventh place at NBA franchises with playoff series wins. Matt, would you like to take a guess at the six that he doesn't have more than? The sixth franchise that he doesn't have more playoff wins than? Yeah, playoff series wins. Playoff series wins. I mean, I don't know. There's two that are very easy. He's on one of them. He does not have more wins than the Lakers. Yeah. Or the Celtics or the 76ers or the Golden State Warriors the Spurs and the Knicks after that is more playoff wins than everyone else. Yeah, or nothing shout out to the Pelicans that have to Maybe I don't know the run. I don't think this would affect his legacy at all if he loses No, but if he wins it Absolutely, it could only you know advances. Yeah and Not to mention in the last series, they almost also blew it. I think it was a 3-0 lead. But luckily they were able to do it in 6 and get the job done. But it was close. I'd be surprised if they don't get swept or 4-1'd. I don't think Lebron's getting swept. I think he least wins one. This has a tough team, dude. They're so good. But this help is Austin Reeves and his son. Oh, yeah. And also... I saw this, this is just, you want to talk about cherry picking stats, man? ⁓ where was it? I saw a ton of tweets about, ⁓ playoff series wins before turning 25. ⁓ Brawny has won. Michael Jordan had zero. You've been talking about just, you know, picking a stat, you know, there's one right there. is why stats need context, man. You can't just throw them out there and expect them to stick. ⁓ speaking of the next playoff series that we got going on here in the West, is the, ⁓ Minnesota timber wolves taking on the San Antonio Spurs. Now there is some good news for the wolves. did beat the nuggets in the last series and they are getting Antman back for this one. ⁓ I saw that was, I believe just announced today that he was going to come back. I think that game is, is it later tonight? It is. It is later tonight. So game one is happening. Game two, believe will be happening when this pot comes out. Spurs are nine and half point favorites. Spurs are nine and a half point favorites. Shout out to the Bulls for closing it out with the Nuggets without Ant-Man, without Steven Chenzo who tore the Achilles and without Ayo Deshimu. No. Who dropped 40 in game, I guess five. It was crazy that they were able to get it done against the Nuggets. It was like a six beat and a three seed. And like an MVP candidate and Yocca and they were still able to get it done with like, like you said, without a lot of their actually three or four, they're starting five or whatever it was. Yeah. They, ⁓ it's like the magic. get a lot of nuggets, got a lot of things you think about in the off season. However, I'm going to say this, Matt, and you know, feel free to stop me. I feel like we're on a collision course for OKC and San Antonio, the Western Conference Finals. And I think either of those two teams are going to be the title. I mean, they are the title favorites right now. Yeah, I think that it's not crazy to say that. NBA finals winner is going to be from the West. That's not crazy to say it's going be Thunder or Spurs. I mean, you got a 50-50 shot every year when you say that. I mean. Realistically, yeah, ⁓ the weakness that we've seen from the East. I mean, three game sevens all from the East in the first round. Yeah. That's very... You could make an argument like the two other teams, the Lakers and the Wolves in the West are not powerhouses. So it's really, there's only two powerhouses in the West. And that's where I think we're going to the clear course, which I would honestly like... I'd love to see that series, see Wemby versus Chet and Shea and all those guys. Like, I that would be, you know, a great matchup, especially as a one and two, but we'll see. I think the Spurs get it done pretty handily. I honestly, I saw something that said like, you know, the last, the Spurs are like the, I don't know, title favorites base if you want to do statistics, like the last, the last seven champions have not gone more than five game or got it done when five games or less in the, in the first round. They're not repeat champions and that is really only the San Antonio Spurs. I would have 50 plus wins in the regular season. Yeah, I guess the Thunder lucked out last year with Tyrese Halbert and his Achilles in game seven. Dude, I keep seeing those clips on my TikTok feeds and all that. I'm like, man, what could have been if he just did not tear his Achilles? And I just started ⁓ starting five on Netflix. ⁓ did they recap it? Yeah, that's like the beginning of the first episode was that finals game. I think I did see the trailer for that. It was like, this looks really good. It's been pretty good so far, but it's so sad seeing how he had to deal with that. All right, moving to the East now. We got the New York Knicks taking on the Philadelphia 76ers. ⁓ I think out of the East, is the series that I'm excited for. The Knicks and Sixers will meet the playoffs for just the third time in 37 years. It is their 10th all-time postseason meeting. And Philly hasn't beaten New York in a postseason series since 1983. Now these teams did play in 2024 in the postseason and Jalen Brunson went absolutely off. He averaged 43.8 minutes a game at 35.5. points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game and nine assists per game in that series. And they ended up winning it and moving on. And I believe they lost to the Celtics. Cause that was the year the Celtics took on the Mavs in the finals. Shout out to the Mavs for losing not only Luca, but Janet Bronson as well. Yeah. Very good management in court office. Way to that one in. But actually that game's going on. currently as we are recording this podcast and the Knicks are up. 14 points almost a half time. I think the 76ers once again, great win against Boston. But I think the Knicks are going to be able to get this done. I just think, you know, this could be the year that the Knicks finally get to the finals again. It's been a while, but also, you know, history could repeat itself. They just beat Boston for the first time since 1982 in a postseason series. This could be, you know, 1983 all over again. Just running through it. Um, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey have been absolutely balling out, especially in the last series. Shout out Tyrese Maxey, who is the hometown Dallas area guy who I'm probably rooting for in this. He went to South Garland High School. So if you ever, if you're in the DFW area and you need a rooting interest, there you go. I'm Sam. I think a sixers, I pull it up. love that this is Philly versus New York though. mean, talk about an absolute just like rock fight between these fans, two fan bases that, you know. Generally despise each other. Yeah. This is going to be a good series. Hopefully it doesn't end in a sweep. I would love to see a game seven in this. It's not going to be a sweep. It better not be a That'd be a bad product. It's like interesting to think about the best play on the series. It's either Brunson or Embiid. I know Embiid has MVP and stuff, he's notoriously injured. He might not even play all the games. And Brunson has just been a playoff riser. See, I'm not gonna lie. I thought Embiid got hurt in the last game against Boston in the game seven. Like he was like limping around. I was like, oh, well he's going to be out for the next series. I think he knocked knees or somebody towards the end of the game, but. Knock knees and then got pushed to the ground. It looks fun. Yeah. The problem is he's just such a big guy. It's hard not for those guys to get hurt because they're just. Dude, apparently I saw on Twitter earlier today that Embiid and Cat have some beef. Ooh. A little bit of beef going on from like five, six years ago. That's good product there. There's something, there's something there. There's something there. They got something to play for if they didn't already. Yep, and then getting into the final series here. I don't have too many notes for it, but it is the Cleveland Cavaliers taking on the Detroit Pistons, who Matt talked about in his Brody of Week, Cade Cunningham, absolutely been balling out in the postseason as of late. Didn't really get a couple games where he was off a little bit, but other than that, he's been kind of showing up when the backs have been against the wall for Detroit. And I do like, I think this series is going to go the distance. I think these teams are pretty evenly matched up. You know, the Cavs have Donovan Mitchell and who's their big man? Who am I thinking of? got the Afro. Jared Allen. Jared Allen. And former DPOI Evan Mobley. Yep. Evan Mobley. And James Harden. And James Harden. I forget about James Harden being on the Cavs. Yeah. But I think this series, if there's going be one that goes seven, I like this one to go seven in all of them. So. Yeah. mean, Jared Allen had a great. uh, game last night, game seven. I might, I did see that James Harden, he's kind of been the, uh, it's kind of a stigma around him, uh, in the playoffs. If I'm not performing that well, and he hasn't really done that well in these playoffs, he's kind of lived up to that infamous title. You know, the deadline they traded, um, Darius Harlan for James Harden To be the guy that puts him over the over the hump in the playoffs. So hopefully you can turn it up a little bit You know Cavs have the players like you said there is or a Donovan Mitchell Fantastic guy who also hasn't been that great. It wasn't that great against ⁓ the Raptors So hopefully in this series, you know, they can turn it up. Also for the Pistons, Cade has been fantastic ⁓ Jen and Dern has not, was probably the second best player. Hopefully he can, you know, turn up as well. It's ⁓ I think I agree with what you said. It's going to go the distance. Yeah. We talked about James Harden a little bit. He's averaging 20.6 per game in the postseason right now. So he's been balling out on Mitchell's averaging 23.1. It just seems like the Cavs do a very good job of spread the ball around. There's not just like one guy that's going to, you know, take over and beat you. It's kind of, they're just going to, you know, death of a thousand cuts. Anyone can do it. And the closeout games, Harden hasn't been that good, but we'll see in this next series, the fresh series. Matt, if you had to pick, you know, who's your champion right now, who would you say? Actually give me your, give me your, your matchup in the championship. Lakers. You're taking Lakers? No, I'm taking, uh, I'm going go Thunder. Who is Thunder playing? They're just there. Give me Thunder and give me Nix, guess. Okay. Give me Thunder, give me Nix or Sixers. I don't think Caps and Pistons are going to go. Yeah. I like the Spurs and Nix. Then I think the Spurs get it done this year. I think they're ahead of schedule and we're going to be living in a Victor women yammy. That'd be my worst nightmare. Yeah. He's about to take over the league. He's arrived early. I mean, yeah. think they got an easy path to the championship other than like the Thunder Spurs series is going to be cinema. Yeah. I mean, with Ant back, it's going to be a tough series for them. I think the Thunder have the easiest outside of the playing the Spurs to get to the finals. But if Licko is healthy, I'm biased. You think the Lakers get it done? I'm biased. mean, it'd be generational stuff on a Luka. If the Lakers can pull off the miracle and beat the thunder in this series, they were saying Luka could come back for the conference finals. Like LeBron would be the undisputed goat if they win the series. Yeah, but then people are going to be like, he's got to win the ring. The ring. Yeah. I mean, just like, if he wins the ring, then yes, undisputed, this would be a crazy just run from the From LeBron at 40. 41 year old beating the Rockets and then beating the Thunder. I the Rockets should have KD. I saw the take going around. Uh, Colin Coward talking about like from like 2018 or 2016. He was talking about Jordan at 40 was still the best player and we won't say it with LeBron. It's like now we've kind of seen LeBron at 40 been able to get a playoff series win and keep moving around. We're not going to get too much on LeBron, but. You want to talk about. season is pretty much over after. playing the thunder. You want to talk about a generational rage baiter on Collingwood has to be up there. Yeah. He had just all all the, all the guys are rage baiters, stuff you saying. He's, remember sometimes we rage bait. I know, but back in the day he was saying Joe burrow is not going to be a day one starter. He's not going to do well in NFL is game. Is it going to translate from college to the pros? And obviously he did. Yeah. ⁓ All right. That's our MBA conference semi-final talk. Next, we will move into just some of the other sports. There's not too much to going on. We did talk about the Kentucky Derby a little bit in the birdie of the week, so we're not going to talk about that. But I did see during the Kentucky Derby, Jim Scherck was named the 2027 USA Ryder Cup captain. And he did his first interview since being named captain for the US team. If remembers, we did it on the podcast. It was, we talked about the 2025 Ryder Cup and the USA lost that one pretty handily to the Euros. So they're bringing in Jim Furick, who led the US to a Ryder Cup victory in 2008. And that was after the US had lost three in a row to the Euros. And it is also, this Ryder Cup next year is going to be in Europe. And it has been 34 years since the US has won on European soil. And like I mentioned, they lost in 2025. They also lost in 2023. So we're coming off back to back losses. Haven't won a Ryder Cup since 2021. So they're thinking Jim Furyk can team together and rally the troops. And it would just be an absolute huge win if we can pull this out. Yeah, it's like about a home field advantage. I mean, he was there whenever we had to break the streak before. We got to break the streak now. And if anyone doesn't know who Jim Furyk is, he kind of had some, Back in the 08s and early 2000s, him and Tiger were kind of going back and forth in a couple of tournaments. He was right there in that era. So very good golfer, unorthodox swing. Might be tougher for USA to win next year. ⁓ it's going to be the, the tough, like the crowd is going to be heavily favored for the Euros. With how well, I guess this is a year from now, but with Rory playing like he is and Matt Fitzpatrick. And they don't change captains. Luke Donald's been their captain for like the last 10 years or something. they're pretty consistent. ⁓ Why would they? So not looking good. We need to, we can't even tie. Like you have to win. If you tie, it stays with the euros. ⁓ speaking of golf, did you see that, ⁓ Liv? It's going to get dissolved. I did hear that. their funding. Yeah. So it's going to be interesting to see. When they come, what, what those players are going to do. Like, did they say when the last, is this the last season to live? I assume so. They, they lost their. They're funding. Yeah, they're funding. Yeah. I mean, that's probably a big part of that organization. I did see the YouTube golf league is coming out with, ⁓ Grant Horvat, Brian Bros and Brad Dahlke. And they announced some of the rosters being played. It's kind of like a, it's very in the new stages of playing everything, but you know. Lev goes away and then another league comes up. It's going to be, I think it's strictly YouTubers. Yeah. They just drop the video today. guess you. I was watching it a little bit. Yeah. It's a, mean, what's the your golf league or I think it's like the U I don't know what the name of it. It's something. I mean, I could just, I just look at it. Oh, okay. I got it. It's the your golf tour. Why GT? A new high stakes YouTube golf league features 16 top content creators competing in four events, concluding with a $1 million championship at the win Las Vegas. So very good for YouTube golf. And, ⁓ you know, like we said, Liv's kind of dissolving. Sounds like there's another league stepping up. The last thing I had here for the other sports, and this isn't really sports related. Well, I guess it's kind of sports related, but Skip Bayless, it was announced, I think Yahoo Sports was who reported this. Skip Bayless will join Stephen A Smith on ESPN's first take this Friday. So this podcast drops on Wednesday. It's going to be this Friday. It'll be the first time that Skip Bayless and Stephen A Smith have appeared on a show together since June of 2016. And the reunion is described as a one-time, one-off show. But if anyone knows any of like the famous clips between Skip Bayless and Stephen A, these are two. We talk about rage baiters. are two guys that are very good at, you know, getting the eyeballs on their takes and saying some, just some great stuff. And there's been some great fights between them from the past. So I'm going to be, uh, I'm going to love to tune into that and just see like the one-off show. It's be a lot of yelling. I think this could also be like, they're calling it a one-off show, but I think if ratings are high enough, they might bring it back. I don't know. mean, Skip Bayless is just generational and how some of the takes that he gives. I mean, yeah, he got Shannon Sharp to leave the, their show because he was so rage baity. Yeah. And I've seen like the one where it's like him versus 20 people. Like there's a YouTube video out there. And once again, he just, it doesn't matter what side you take. He can get you riled up. I'd love to have him on the show. Skip open invite to the Brody pod. Very old school fella. He's also a Cowboys fan. So I feel like we'd just be teaming up on you, Matt. Yeah, I think he used to cover SMU as well back in the day. So I assume he's like from around here or something. It's gotta be. It's how much he loves the Cowboys. All right. With that, we will come back. Matt has a new segment we're going to try out. So if it goes well. New seggy. It's my thing. If it goes bad, it's all Matt. Fair enough. back and do that. We're back for a new segment. We normally do one final question to keep through cut five this week. Matt has brought us a, I think it's called stat pad, right? Matt. Well, stat pad, think we might alternate depending. We might see the keep through cut five to like a stat power, a whetel or whatever. We'll We'll keep you on your toes. We'll see. We'll We're going to see our real ball knowledge here. This is new for the pod. So Matt kind of explain how this works a little bit. So. There's one overarching category, which will be, if you see in the top left FPTS fantasy score, fantasy points. Um, it's PPR and it'll give you a, you know, it's a certain category of the left, whether it's in teams or conference or just NFL in general. This is the AFC, uh, North here. And then it'll give you a second, uh, type of the year range. Yeah. Yeah. It's always, I guess, always a year. Obviously it differs, but I'll give you a position and then you got to pick one player from the certain parameters that scored the most of whatever it is, fantasy points or yards, yards per game, rushing yards, whatever it is. So we've got fantasy points, AFC North, 2018, running back. Yep. So let's get that. Let's see if we get it. Um, obviously not Lamar Jackson. He's quarterback running back wise, highest fantasy points. you also choose the season. guess this one is 2018. Yeah, exactly. But it gets harder when you have more years to choose from. But so 2018. Mark Ingram, I don't think he was there in 2018. Joe Mixon. was Joe Mixon. Nick Chubb for the Browns. Yes, he was also there in 2018. So I think that's who we'd be in between. Obviously, we were not recently biased, you know, so we know that the 2018s Steelers, you got ⁓ 18 that might be Le'Veon Bell. might be Bell. might be ⁓ James Connor. Ravens, I don't really know who the running back was in 2018. that kind of, neither do I really. So that kind of rules them out. So I like, mean, Joe Mixon, it's- I like Joe Mixon. I think I might've had him on my fantasy team that year. Yeah, but Le'Veon Bell was such a dog, but also- Was he off the team by 2018? James Connor was there. He was very good. can... Oh, guess it keeps track of our guesses. Yeah, you got, you kind of get one. You get more than one for each one. get one guess. If they weren't there in 2018, it'll say no. Also, I think it'll tell you. So Nick Chubb, that was his rookie year, so probably not Nick Chubb. Joe Mixon is second year. James Connor second year. don't like on bell like he. He moved around a little bit at the end. Yeah. I don't know about living though. I like Joe Mixon. like Joe Mixon. Also James Connor was the dog as well. Let's go Joe Mixon. Gold 92nd present tile. What's the second best? tile was James Connor Nick Chubb at three. guess Duke Johns. Collins was Baltimore. Steve Johnson was trying to clean with that split back. Not bad. Second best. All right. 2005 to 2015, tight end in the NFC. I'll tell you this. I know this off the bat immediately. Another Gronk. I'm going to say right now it's Jimmy Graham. Do you know what season it was for Jimmy Graham? I believe 2013 was his best year with the Saints. it. He checked it. Let's go Jimmy Graham. 2013. Cause he was so, this is definitely biased. A little bit of bias, but I know he was so good. Okay. That's the best one. And what do I answer? Shotgun one was Jimmy Grant 2011. Bernadus and then your boy. Jason Witten. was thinking Jason Witten a little bit. Jason four and five, but I just know Jimmy Grant with Drew Brees was. All right. Now this gets a little tough. Drafted in the fifth round, anywhere from 2015 to 2025. Any position, any team. I know Dak Prescott was a fourth rounder, so he doesn't count in this. Fifth round. Fifth round's going to get tough. I know Tyree Kill was drafted later in the rounds. don't know if it was fifth. Dude, fifth round, that's... Fifth round's very specific. There's probably a running back in there. Probably a receiver. Was Jackson Smith fifth round? No. No, he's first. There can already wasn't first round. think he was like a second or third second or third ⁓ Rams receiver. Who? Who? Who was my little Cooper cup? Fifth round. Maybe I, maybe I know Pooka was like a late round steal. ⁓ let's try one of those guys. We got a big year. When did he do the triple crown? Was that 2019? It like 20-21 when I really won the Super Bowl. 2021? Not the fifth round. a fifth round pick. Alright, Sharapuka. Sharapuka. And we'll go probably this year, right? Yeah, this year, last year. This year. Oh, what Second, it was Tyreek Hill. Okay. I mean, we only- And it was only one point off. Yeah, I know. That's excellent guess. Stephon Diggs, didn't realize, was also a fifth round pick. I can't believe we got that as fast as we did. thought we were going be sitting here for like 10 minutes going fifth round picks. right. Jaguars 2000 to 2025 and it's tied in. Okay. It wasn't, they didn't have to be drafted by them, right? No. So we know obviously it's like Evan Ingram. Evan Ingram is coming to mind. There's Britton Strange who's on the team right now. Well, Britton Strange had a good year this year, I believe. And they to be... The season that counts has to be, to be tight end for the Jaguars, correct? Correct. From 2000 to 2025, so that's 25 years of Jaguar tight ends, which we all keep up with. Of course. That's always in the front of our minds. Yeah, I'm always like, Jaguar tight end, clock that one in my head. I like Evan Ingram. I like Evan Ingram, because that's one of the ones that's come to my head that I know he was actually like a receiving tight end. The other ones are... was very good also. I don't know any others. Yeah. Now might have to get, take a couple of guesses on what year he was there. So he started off with the Giants, I believe. No, I think he, Oh, Tiddy. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Giants a little bit. No, uh, Waller was at the, uh, Raiders. It was either Jags to Giants or Giants to Jags. I think it was Giants. He was there for three years and then 2021 would have been probably his first year with the Jags. So I'd like a 2021 or 2022. The other choice, pick one. Yeah, okay. Not bad, was Evan Ingram. Marschadise Lewis, of course, I'm just glad to see that we're getting the top five guys. How did I forget about Marschadise Lewis, It goes back to us, keep it up, like Kyle Brady, you didn't know Kyle Brady? Packers legend, Marschadise Lewis. Obviously paid, he played for such a long time. All right, next one, 2016. Bears, Vikings, Packers, Lions, not a quarterback. Fantasy points, NFC North, not a quarterback. 2016? immediately want to go like. Devonte Adams? Running, or yeah. I going to say running back, but Adrian Pearson maybe. Calvin Johnson, was he with the Lions in 2016? I think he was retired by then. Okay. Yeah, he retired in 2015. I do like a Devonte Adams. mean, who else is there? Brandon Marshall. There's. I don't think, I think 2016 might've been a Devonte Adams like crazy year. Golden Tate. Maybe Karen Johnson. Give me, give me Devonte Adams. With Devonte Adams. Give me Devonte Adams. What about his third year? Would have been a very good year for him. Oh. Bang. Jordi Nelson. Motherf- I know we're trying to get through this, but like we gotta get Jordi Nelson. I mean, think, I think we did very good for where it was. What's our final, don't we get like a final percentage or something of what we were in? Oh, the 85. 85.3 % of other grids. Yeah, take that. Also same team, same position. Shout out to Aaron. a crazy year for the Packers. Shout out Aaron Rodgers. Jordan Howard never getting there. Jordan or Golden Tate. Said it. I said, but. Kyle Rudolph wasn't even on the radar. No. Jordan Nelson actually went crazy that season. I forget about him. Shout out Raiders legend, dude. Raiders legend, Jordan Nelson. Sorry, Matt. I it was kind of a fun little switch up. Kind of get her brain juices flowing a little bit. Yeah, we're getting ready for football season. Get the viewers kind of engaged a little bit. Yeah, that was great. Great little segment there might bring it back depending if we, if we know him, there's going be a couple that we just don't know if he starts getting like offensive lineman stuff. Might leave that one out. Yeah, we'll see. Actually, it might be fun. Viewers are going to get engaged a little bit, probably rip us up in comments for not thinking about Jordan Nelson.
